The production team would like to welcome you to the “new look” Stradbroke Monthly and hope that you are as happy with the up-date as we are.

In deciding the look of the magazine we have attempted to retain all that was good about the old one whilst introducing new features, and it is on these new features that I would like to focus.

Along with the web site (www.stradbroke.org.uk) the magazine is the face of the village and both will benefit from the ideas, information and involvement of the whole community.

Flying the Flag for your We would like the magazine to contain more local interest new look magazine! and content so would welcome input from anyone who has the time and interest to submit it.

You might be thinking what you can offer? Just about anything that is legal is the answer!

Some ideas to start you off...

Local news, memories of the past (50’s, 60’s, 70’s etc), anniversaries, and amusing village facts.

Is there a keen gardener in the village who would like to write a monthly article?

Daily we hear about global warming and, with this winter being the warmest since records began, how is this affecting the village and the farming community around the village?

Tell us what you want and what don’t want in your magazine!

Now we all know it's a good excuse to spend four days in the Queens Head but of course there's also the serious side of the fundraising. This year we are splitting the funds with the East Anglian Air Ambulance, a charity that the Queens Head and the Cricket Club have raised funds for on a regular basis.

As the title suggests this event is taking place from Good Friday through to Easter Monday, that's the 6th April to 9th April if you need to put this in your diaries. Marty (and his band of helpers) will have the decks of the Mighty Go Go Roadshow spinning from noon until midnight so if you have any requests you can select 2 tracks from his 4,000 vinyl singles for just £1.00. If you can't get along and still want to donate just see any of the committee or leave money behind the bar.

The fundraising for 2007 gets underway this Easter with the 4th "Easter Music Marathon". Historically the Music Marathon was used in 1980 to raise funds for the resurrection of Stradbroke Cricket Club and this was brought back as part of our Silver Jubilee celebrations in 2005.

This event will be broadcast live on the internet, so if you or friends and family have internet access and don't want to miss out make sure you go to www.stradbroke.org.uk and listen in. There Marty Norris and Michael Hugman at the will be an interactive quiz, email requests and the facility to make Queens Head in 2006, broadcasting to a donation via PayPal!

Happy Easter!

A missionary in Brazil discovered a tribe of Indians living in a remote jungle area. Disease was ravaging their population and they urgently needed medical help. However, the only clinic was on the other side of a raging river the Indians believed was inhabited by evil spirits. In their minds, crossing meant certain death. Although the missionary assured them he’d crossed it safely many times, they hesitated. When he led them to the bank and placed his hand in the water, they were sceptical. He even waded in and splashed water on his face. No go! Finally he turned and dived into the water and swam under the surface, emerging safely on the other side. Having discredited the river’s powers the missionary raised a triumphant fist. The tribe broke into cheers and followed him across.

Great news! Jesus went through the river of death. He defeated it by submerging, crossing over and rising again on the other side!

Dr Erwin Lutzer said, “we don’t need a Saviour who can just ‘help’ us; we need one who can resurrect us. We don’t need a saviour who just helps us when life gets tough; we need one who can help us when life end.” ‘Easter proves Jesus is the resurrection, and the life’. As a well known writer said, ‘He made death look like a 90 pound weakling dressed up like a Charles Atlas suit!’

He literally kicked the ends out of the grave, transforming it from a dead end street into a glorious highway from here to heaven’! And Paul the apostle says… “He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit” Hence we say “Happy Easter!”

Happenings at the Baptist Church In April the Cameo Lunch will be on Wednesday 11th at 12:30 pm in the Church Hall. Do let Jackie know if you are coming, by giving her a ring on 384112. We would love to see you there, just after we have celebrated Easter Sunday and, may be, getting an Easter Egg! Connect will be on Wednesday 25th April, 10:30 am in the Church Hall. This is a short service followed by tea or coffee and biscuits and time for a chat. Do come along.

Our Youth Club is growing from strength to strength and, on Shrove Tuesday, we cooked pancakes for everyone – they went down a treat!

Our former members, young people who have left us, come back to visit us quite frequently, which is great, so we must be doing something right!

The Rectory Dear Friends, I am most grateful to all those who contributed to the amount being sent to “Biblelands”, in celebration of my 25 years here, to help those in most need in the countries that feature in The Bible. It is a favourite charity of mine because I visited Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon over forty years ago when I travelled round the world, and very much appreciated the hospitality that I received there. It is the political and religious conflicts in that region that causes much suffering , and is sometimes a threat to world security. The confrontation that Jesus had with the Jewish and the Roman authorities that led to his arrest, trial and crucifixion is a unique event because he is our Saviour, “who died on The Cross, once and for-all”, but the arguments about power and authority, about who should live in The Holy Land, and how freedom, independence and justice can be achieved are as real now, as there were in biblical times. Do come and hear and think more about this subject at our church services in April.

Our Annual Church Meeting is at All Saints at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, April 17th.

We will be going to Laxfield Church for the Confirmation Service at 10.15 a.m. on Sunday, 22nd April, to support the candidates from our parishes.

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump!

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 16th April 2007 at 7.30 pm at The Community Centre

Council Meeting March 07 At the March meeting of the Parish Council the planning application for a 49 site touring caravan park in Horham was discussed. Although this site is in Horham it is very close to the border with Stradbroke and therefore likely to have an impact on the village. The council’s view was that we should recommend that Mid Suffolk District Council refuse the application. It was felt that traffic entering and leaving the site could be hazardous and that it would be visually intrusive in a rural area. Please note that if you wish to view planning applications they can be viewed on the Mid Suffolk District Council web site or on the village web site (stradbroke.org.uk). If you are unsure about using a computer the local librarian will be very happy to help you. Please just call into the library.

The flooding in the rear car park at the Community Centre was also discussed and the council is endeavouring to solve the problem once the plans of the drains for the site can be located.

Parish Magazine This is the first issue with the new team and the Parish Council wish them well and thank them for taking on all that is involved. Please let the new editor, Tony Ambler, know if there is anything new you would like to see in the magazine or if you would like to make a contribution of your own.

Annual Parish Meeting This will be held on the 26th April 2007 at 7.30pm in the Community Centre.

Everyone is very welcome and we hope to have a good turn out. Any village organisation or club is invited to come along and report on their activities if they wish to do so. It is also an opportunity for anyone to raise any matters or ask questions that are relevant to the work of the Parish Council so please come along. Coffee and tea will be served after the meeting.

Parish Council Election The election is due in May so if you think you would like to stand for the council please give Carol Smy (Parish Clerk) a ring and ask for nomination form.

The closing date for nominations to be received at Mid Suffolk District Council Office is 12 noon on 4th April 2007 so there is not too much time left.

Life in the Legion To start this month’s Legion Report I must on behalf of The Branch thank The outgoing Editor our Chaplain David Streeter for all his help and cooperation since The ‘Monthly was started, and we welcome the new editor, Tony Ambler, to this important Office. Having been connected with reporting since 1950 I know the job of editor can be difficult but also rewarding.

Seventeen members attended our March Mid-Day monthly meeting when the speaker was member Tom Moore, who had again stepped in at short notice, and gave us a very interesting talk on ‘Steam’. He brought along a small steam engine which he had made plus accessories, and also read out an account of his life written by his wife Barbara. I gave the usual vote of thanks.

In the RBL tribute at the start of the meeting we remembered Marshall Revell from the Hoxne Branch who had recently died. He had been a very active member of The Legion, and had attended many of The Stradbroke Branch Events over many years. The Branch was well represented at his funeral at Wingfield Church. A full Legion service was held with a Guard of Honour at the Church Entrance before the service.

Assistant Secretary Graham Neale stood in for Secretary Jeremy Higgins who was absent, and Roger Gwyn our Branch Treasurer gave his usual report.

In addition Roger Gwyn summarized the CVs of The Candidates for The New National Chairman, and Vice Chairman, and a vote was taken and the result forwarded.

The Branch is to hold a Legion in The Community Event on the 26th October this year.

I gave a report on the recent H Group Meeting at Eye, and The Stradbroke Branch is to host The H Group Meeting in the summer on the 23rd August at our HQ the Queens Head PH. The Annual Branch Dinner was held at The Community Centre and attended by a record number of 89 members and guests with the meal served by Anne Fiddy and her team from Scole.

This year’s theme was sponsorship and the Legions Toast was proposed by Jeremy Burton Area Manager of The Norwich and Peterborough Building Society. He is also The Mayor of Attleborough, and The branch Chairman’s son. The response was given by Peter Gipson from Bacton, The Suffolk County RBL Chairman. A Toast to all the guests was given by Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins, and The reply by Sir Edmund Lacon Bt. who is Chairman of the Halesworth Branch. President Richard Shepherd presided and also presented The Ken Richardson Memorial Shield to Graham Neale, who is the Assistant Branch Secretary. Branch Chairman Michael Burton was the Toast Master, and The Rev’d David Streeter said The Grace.

All the Ladies present received gift-wrapped Pot Plants from The Dinner Stewards.

A draw for Branch Funds run by John and Jill Graham raised £200.

The next Branch Meeting is on Thursday April 5th at 11.30am at The QHPH when the speaker will be the well-known coachman, John Parker, from Wingfield.

Organisations Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College

The visit to Kenya over half-term was an overwhelming experience for the staff and governors from SBEC and Wilby Primary School.

Many exciting trips and visits have taken place this term, and last week, beginning 12th March, was dedicated to our Kenyan connection and African Culture with the Flexi Day on 14th March centred on Kenyan curriculum links. Teddy Akori, from the Ghana Arts Group, worked with our students, and pupils in Y3 and 4 from all the schools in our primary pyramid on story telling, drama and dance.

The visit to Kenya over half-term was an over-whelming experience for the staff and governors from SBEC and Wilby Primary School. We were made extremely welcome by the staff and students of Senior Chief Mwangeka Secondary School and Mbauro Primary, and spent a fascinating week observing lessons and working with colleagues. The pupils of their schools were very excited at our visit, and were delighted to watch the DVD prepared by the Jazz Video Diary Team, Hannah Penn, Craig Slade, Zak Walters & William Brundle They were keen to hear how we organise schools and teach lessons, and they would love to visit England to experience our culture. The next step comes the first week in June, when the staff and governors from Kenya visit us here to move our links closer. It was one of those experiences that changes your life, and we know it will make a really positive addition to our ethos at SBEC and at Wilby School.

Women’s Institute Wow, our March meeting went with a swing. We have 40 members in our Women’s Institute and 38 of them were present at this meeting! It was a wonderful turn out, and we all enjoyed an excellent evening in good spirits with lots of laughter and chat.

Chris Miller came and spoke to us on Suffolk Punch Horses, it was very humorous and enlightening and I, for one, learnt a lot about `heavy horses’ and the horsemen who looked after them and worked them, Tractors did eventually takeover form the horses but not until the end of the 1940’s. We saw some wonderful slides and Chris Miller held our attention throughout.

A vote of thanks was given to Chris Miller by Carol Darling who expressed just how we were all feeling – enthralled!

Women’s World Day of Prayer The Service at Horham Baptist Church on Friday, 2nd March, prepared this year by the Christian Women of Paraguay, was a delightful occasion. The collection amounted to £82.50 and has gone towards the work of the Women’s World Day of Prayer, and for Christian Literature Societies and Educational Projects. Thank you to all who attended, and particularly to those who read, arranged the flowers, made the tea and, of course, to our pianist.

Stradbroke Local History Group If you have anything you would like included in the Village Archive please let us know. It could be memories of life in the village, events for example. It could be Stradbroke Local photographs or newspaper cuttings or old letter heading or invoices or bills from History Group long gone Stradbroke businesses. In fact anything that relates to Stradbroke’s past has an important place in the Archive! Original documents, photographs, letters etc can be scanned and copied into the Archive… and the Archive also provides a back up in case you ever lost those precious items. email

Do You Know Where This Was Taken?

It looks a little different today from when it was taken in the 1930s The photographer is standing on the left hand side of New Street, just past Woodfields at the top of Meadow Way, looking west towards Horham. The little girl is Nora Edlard and she has just taken the cows out of the yard of New Street Farm to walk them to the fields.

The original farmhouse, now a private house, is all that remains today.

Our Next Meeting The April meeting of the History Group will be on Wednesday 4th April 2007 at 7.00pm in the Community Centre, Wilby Road. Non members are always welcome.

The cost for non members is £1-50 which includes coffee and biscuits Stuart Bowell whom many of you will know, is our guest speaker and Stuart will be telling us about the History of Advertising. On display from the Village Archive, will be some examples of advertising from past Stradbroke businesses and events .

Babies and toddlers (with their parents/carers) are very welcome at the Stradbroke Baby and Toddler Group which is held every Wednesday, during term time, between 10am and 12 noon at the Community Centre in Stradbroke.

A large selection of toys are available all morning and a craft activity is organised each week for the toddlers to enjoy. This is followed by a healthy snack for the children, and tea or coffee for the adults.

Patient and Public Involvement In Health (PPI) Forums • PPI Forums are statutory organisations, who have the powers to improve health services of the local community. They are established by the government, via the Commission of Patient and Public Involvement in Health to represent patients and the public within the NHS.

Roof Fund The Friends of All Saints Church are pleased to announce that they are running a Race Night on Saturday 21st April at 7:30 pm in the Community Centre in aid of the roof fund. If you have never been to a Race Night then you are in for an enjoyable evening that won’t break the bank. Filmed horse races are shown and you are invited to bet on the horses just as you would if they were running for the first time.

Stradbroke Festival Committee: Country Fair The Stradbroke Festival Committee is planning to hold a Country Fair on the 21st July 2007 in Street Farm’s Meadow, Laxfield Road.

Stradbroke Primary School The Easter Service will be held on Thursday 27th March at 2pm in All Saints Church.

As in previous years the children will be encouraged to make and wear Easter Bonnets.

There will be a competition for the best bonnet for each class. Children will then wear their bonnets to the Easter Service. The last day of term is Friday 30th March and the school re-opens on Tuesday 17th April after the Easter holiday.

PEDESTRIANS There are a good many people out walking - not all as safely as they could be. I have taken a few rules from the Highway Code. Parents, please include your teenage children in this advice.

Pavements or footpath should be used if possible; avoid walking next to the kerb with your back to the traffic. If you have to step into the road, look both ways first.

If there is no pavement or footpath, walk on the right-hand side of the road so that you can see oncoming traffic.

You should take extra care, and be prepared to walk in single file, especially on narrow roads or in poor light.

Keep close to the side of the road.

It may be safer to cross the road well before a sharp right-hand bend, so that oncoming traffic has a better chance of seeing you. Cross back after the bend.

Help other road users to see you. Wear or carry something light-coloured, bright or fluorescent in poor daylight conditions. When it is dark, use reflective materials (e.g. armbands, sashes, waistcoat or jackets), which can be seen by drivers using headlights up to three times as far away as-non-reflective materials.

YOUNG CHILDREN should not be out alone on the pavement or the road. When taking children out, walk between them and the traffic, and hold their hands firmly. Strap very young children into pushchairs, or use reins.

GREEN CROSS CODE The advice given below is for all pedestrians. Children should be taught the code, and should not be allowed out alone until they can understand and use it properly. The age when they can do this is different for each child. Many children cannot judge how fast vehicles are going, or how far away they are. Children learn by example, so parents and carers should always use the code in full when out with their children. They are responsible for deciding at what age children can use it safely by themselves.

ORGANISED WALKS Groups of people should use a path if available; if one is not, they should keep to the left. Lookouts should be positioned at the front and back of the group, and they should wear fluorescent clothes in daylight and reflective clothes in the dark. At night, the lookout in front should carry lights and wear reflective clothing.

ALONGSIDE A ROAD WITH NO PAVEMENT - IF WALKING A DOG - Please keep it on a short lead, and preferably on your inside - away from traffic.

Very popular at this time of year - THEFTS FROM SHEDS/GARAGES etc. Please keep tools/machinery and garden equipment secure when not in use, even when you go in for a cup of tea. Don’t leave them unattended in the garden - a couple of ticks and they could be gone.

Stradbroke Cricket Club Suddenly, Spring has sprung. There is a feeling that the cricket season is just around the corner, with the first batch of fixtures as follows: • 1st XI v Elvedon (Away) Saturday 28th April, v Eye (away) 5th May • A team v Rumburgh (Away) Sunday 22nd April, v Felixstowe Corinthians II (Home) Sunday 29th April • B team v Melton St.Audrys B (Away) Sunday 22nd April, v Saxmundham B (Away) Sunday 29th April • Friendly XI v Oslo Aliens (Home) Monday 30th April • Academy XI v Kesgrave (Home) Saturday 12th May So there is plenty of cricket for everyone. The laying of the artificial pitch has been delayed due to the desperate state of the Playing Field, but we are confident it will be in place for the start of the season.

There has been a full programme of winter practice, and this has culminated in selections for the Suffolk squads for the following members: Alan Barker (Under 17), Joe Pearson (Under 16), Alex Fitchett (Under 16), Liam Smith (Under 11).

Five of Stradbroke’s girls have been for Suffolk Under 13 trials, and we are waiting to hear whether any of them made it.

All these initiatives cost money, so the next fund raising event is the Easter Music Marathon, to be held at the Queens Head Inn over the Easter weekend. Select your favourite songs from the 4000 vinyl singles (2 for £1). Proceeds will be split 50/50 between the cricket Club and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. You can also choose a song on line at www.stradbroke.org.uk It should be great fun.

Stradbroke & District Bowls Club Our first fund raising venture of the Season went very well. 54 people attended the ‘Pudding Party’ held in the Community Centre and were met with a table laden with puddings of all kinds, sweet and savoury, all made by members or their wives.

Mary and Mike had worked hard to get the room ready so we all tucked into the food, and Mary kept a Blind Auction going for most of the evening with lots of hilarity and people bidding against each other. The Club made £439.90 towards the upkeep of the Green etc. Thank you to everybody who came along and supported the Club.

Dates for your Diary: Opening of the Green – Saturday 21st April. There will be a roll up at 3 pm and the Presidents Cup will be played at 5 pm. Any prospective members, who want to find out what Bowls is about, are welcome to turn up at 3 pm.

There will be Friendly Club/Social afternoon roll ups on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, commencing Tuesday 1st May between 2 and 4 pm. Anyone welcome. Members 25p. Visitors £1.

Football There have been no 1st Team games since our last report because of the dreadful state of our Pitch. The Reserves lost to Woolverstone 7 - 4 and won v. Sproughton 2 - 1.

The March Cash Bingo was well supported raising £134.90. The next Bingo is on Friday 13th April at the Community Centre at 7.30 pm. See you there.

The Tennis Club At the recent AGM, the Tennis Club appointed their committee for 2007: Mary Ellis, President, John Bedwell, Chairman and Secretary, Kevin Johnson, Vice-Chairman, Julie Cooper, Treasurer, Rachael Spurling, Minutes Secretary and Colin Revell, Colin Haddock, Sally Havers and Kevin Ellis.

Club Nights will begin on Friday 30th March, and the Club welcomes all existing members to come along, and would also make most welcome any new members who may wish to join.

This year the Club has entered two teams in the Lowestoft League and two in the South Norfolk League.

Forthcoming events are the Annual Tennis Club Dinner, being held this year at the Rushall Half Moon Restaurant on Friday 13th April, A Cheese and Wine Evening on Friday 26th May, A Fish & Chip Evening on Friday 22nd June, and A Cream Tea and BBQ on Friday 27th July, at Pump Cottage, Queen Street, by kind invitation of Mike and Mary Ellis.

The Club has Qualified LTA Tennis Coaches and, if you are a beginner or wish to improve your game, then lessons are available; please ring John Bedwell on 384796 for further details.
