Stradbroke gets ‘Back to Nature’ SAS have been thinking for some time how great it would be if Stradbroke could have its very own Nature Reserve, a place where children (and Mums and Dads of course) could get hands-on experience and learn about the natural world around us in their very own nature park. Well, this could now become a reality. We have been in discussion with a local farmer about the use of one of the small pieces of woodland near the village. The farmer has agreed that we can pursue this area, a 2 acre site situated close to the permissive footpath towards the south end of Neaves Lane. The site is in easy walking distance of the schools and would provide a wonderful educational facility for everyone in Stradbroke. The picture illustrates what the area might look like when completed. It includes a pathway through the area, a bridge to give people access, a small wetland area, a bird hide and feeding area and a deer hide. We will also aim to install bat and bird boxes, habitat piles and create an area where people can look for beetles and other mini-beasts We have already approached the heads of our two schools and both have received the idea enthusiastically. They are keen to work with us and will definitely make use of the Reserve when it is finished. However, to get the scheme off the ground we will need some additional help. We are looking for willing volunteers from within the village to help design, create and eventually manage the Reserve. So, if you are interested, we would really like to hear from you. Our aim is to start construction work in the Spring and have the Reserve open to visitors in time for the Summer, with all construction complete by the following year. The next step is to hold a public meeting for all interested parties – parents, children, farmers and anyone else who is interested in the project. If you think that you can help us make a success of this project – come to the meeting which will be held in the Community Centre at 7.00pm on Friday, 11th of March. If you can’t make the meeting, please get in touch, we guarantee that no offer of help will be turned down!
