No.473

HOUSING NEEDS SURVEY 2021 STRADBROKE COMMUNITY LAND TRUST The time has come again for every household in Stradbroke to complete a Housing Needs Survey.

WHY? The last survey was 7 years ago and we want to make sure that as the Neighbourhood Plan begins to deliver housing benefit to Stradbroke, that the village gets the right sized and style of homes for those who need and want them and in particular, those who already live here or have family who want to live in Stradbroke.

WHEN? The Survey will take place in June 2021.

HOW? An envelope will be put through your letter box which will contain one questionnaire per household. Each will have a code. You can either complete the paper survey and return to the address given or alternatively you can use the code and complete the survey online. If you wish to complete the survey separately from your household you are very welcome to request an additional survey/code. Details on how to do this will be included in the pack you receive.

WHO? The Survey is being conducted by Community Action Suffolk at our request. They are an independent company who do this for Land Trusts and other organisations as a totally confidential venture. You will not be asked for your name, address or any other private information and all questions are optional. Nobody from Community Action Suffolk (CAS) OR Stradbroke Community Land Trust (SCLT) will be able to identify you from this survey. All surveys are submitted directly to CAS who will produce a report for SCLT detailing the needs that YOU identify in your survey responses. This is why it is so important for the whole village to read and complete the survey pack when it arrives through your door! Please complete the survey when it arrives, whether you have a housing need or not, so that we can try to ensure Stradbroke has the homes wanted and needed in the future.

Stradbroke Community Land Trust: SCLT is a village group set up following the completion of the Neighbourhood Plan to ensure Stradbroke housing meets the needs of Stradbroke residents in to the future! You are very welcome to join us and find out more. www.stradbrokeclt.org.uk

Laxfield Road, Stradbroke, Suffolk, 01379 388 744 Come and join us at the Chapel – you would be made most welcome. Sundays 10:15am Worship Service Thursdays 1:30pm Prayer Meeting Fellowship We are compliant with the latest Government laws/safety guidance for COVID-19. Currently, face-coverings should be worn whilst in the Chapel. Something to ponder upon… Jim was aged 75, while out shopping one day he suddenly collapsed on the street. He was quickly rushed to hospital where he was immediately given oxygen while the medical teams observed his condition. Following 24 hours on oxygen support, Jim had fully recovered & bounced back on his feet – fit as a fiddle. As he was about to leave the hospital a doctor gave him a bill for $500. As Jim read bill he began to cry, tears flowing down both cheeks. “Don’t cry because of the bill Jim,” the doctor said, “the oxygen has saved your life!” Jim replied, “I’m not crying because of the money, I have plenty to pay the bill. I am crying because for only 24 hours of using oxygen I have to pay $500, but I have been breathing the free air of God for 75 years, and I never paid anything. Do you know how much I owe God? The doctor lowered his head as tears filled his eyes too. The air we breathe is free… but how often do we thank God for the breath of life…? Often we look at our lives and see what we do not like… what we have not got… or what may not be working out well for us… However, if we just take time to stop and reflect we will quickly come to realise as Jim did at 75, we are blessed in so many ways every day which we tend to overlook, take for granted or offer little thanks for. (To name a few: peace… freedom… abilities… food… shoes… wealth… fresh air…) As lockdown restrictions are now easing and we look forward to the new normal, take time to reflect on what has occurred in the past year or so and ask yourself how much do I owe God? You may wish to centre your reflections on your health, family, workplace, community, church, and yourself. 1Thessalonians 5:18, urges us to ‘give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you…’ The truth is we do not owe God anything because His love and grace has already paid the cost but our responsibility is to be thankful for everything He does for us… As the old gospel favourite goes: As the world looks upon me, as I struggle along They say I have nothing, but they are so wrong In my heart I'm rejoicing, how I wish they could see Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me. There's a roof up above me, I've a good place to sleep There's food on my table and shoes on my feet You gave me your love Lord and a fine family Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me. Now I know I'm not wealthy, and these clothes , they're not new I don't have much money, but Lord I have you And to me that's all that matters, though the world cannot see Thank you Lord, for your blessings on me The church and I continue to pray for you all and welcome any specific prayer requests for yourself or loved ones. May God bless us all, Bruce Francis – Pastor 01379 388 744 or 07484 219 265 or psalm34.8@yahoo.com

From the Rectory…

Dear friends and neighbours, On 10th May we were told by the Prime Minister that some of us are able to leave our homes if we have work we can get to and do safely or if we would like to exercise more frequently. Just like everyone else, the Church is trying to get to grips with how to operate at a time when safety has to be balanced with service. The central order to ‘Stay at Home’ has been changed to ‘Stay Alert’. I have been thinking about what we have been alerted to over the past weeks and what we might do well to stay alert to in the future. distance, staying at home if we have symptoms and seeking help if they get worse; -19 – both directly, by the virus itself, and indirectly but the impact of the lockdown; loved ones around them; around the world who will be affected the worst for years to come;

As the lockdown lifts, one of my biggest fears is that, in spite all we have learned, we will go back to ‘normal’ and resume our pre-lockdown habits. It’s up to all of us to make sure we stay alert to what’s important and carry on being good neighbours to all in our villages and beyond. ‘…be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.’ Ephesians 4:32 Love and blessings, Rev’d Gini, Curate, 01379 586414

Our May meeting was held earlier than usual this year on 4th May to enable it to be held online as the legislation allowing this was about to expire and the Government has chosen not to renew it. We co-opted Russell Ayling to the Council at this meeting and look forward to welcoming him at our next meeting. As we are no longer allowed to meet online we have decided to cancel our June meeting to allow us to get ready to meet safely in person. We must be able to accommodate both councillors and members of the public who wish to attend. We are planning to hold our next meeting in person on Monday 12th July in the Church which has plenty of space and ventilation to meet safely (a big thank you to Rev Susan Loxton). We are planning to continue to broadcast our meetings on Facebook Live and also to allow members of the public who wish to speak to do so remotely by video link from home. Please see our website https://stradbrokepc.org for more details. In the May County Council elections Peter Gould was elected as our new County Councillor and we are looking forward to welcoming him to our next meeting. Peter is also a Town councillor in Eye and a Mid Suffolk District councillor. We have already spoken to him about the situation with traffic in Stradbroke and we are looking forward to working with him to see if a 20mph speed limit (similar to the one implemented in Eye) or other measures could be possible for Stradbroke. We have sent the Council’s best wishes and thanks to our outgoing County Councillor Guy McGregor for the help and support he has given to Stradbroke over many years as our councillor. Speaking of traffic, it should soon be possible for us to start the community speed watch (which had to be put on hold during lockdown) however we do not have enough volunteers. Suffolk Police need us to have a minimum team of six people. If you are able to volunteer to help with this please contact our Clerk, Odile at stradbrokepc@outlook.com. LED INFORMATION: Save Energy and Costs Save money and help the planet by changing to LED bulbs, as the Parish Council is doing. LEDs fit nearly all lamps and lights, large and small bayonet or screw-on at 240 voltage. They are more robust and can last 20 times longer than ordinary bulbs. They use less wattage for the same amount of light (approx 1/10th as in 50W halogen v 5W LED). You will reduce your electric lighting bill as soon as you fit them. LEDs are now cheaper than ever (100W equivalent 12W bulb 4 pack = £13, Amazon, but saving you money straight away). Colours include warm white. Can be recycled. We found www.thegreenage.co.uk informative, with videos. Stradbroke Swifts update THANK YOU to all Monthly readers who have talked to me about our Stradbroke swifts. We have seen and heard them in the air seeking places to nest and some lucky people have them nesting near. What a lovely heritage for Stradbroke children if we can increase them. Send us your photos! They are clean birds in the nest and every home should have some! Your Parish Council now recommends that all new builds in Stradbroke have at least two swift bricks installed (also called universal bricks as they are used by many other birds). This is a planning condition of many authorities. Make the most of our summer swifts, as they all fly home to Africa in July/August. www.swift-conservation.org http://actionforswifts.blogspot.com Google search “Save Our Suffolk Swifts” and “Action for Swifts.” Join SPC Climate Change Group: antoinettewisbey@gmail.com Toni Wisbey

Recycling

Babergh & Mid Suffolk's contractor unexpectedly stopped paper bank collections in the districts on 1 May, as the councils understand it is no longer viable for the contractor to continue with the service. As such, the contractor will shortly begin removing the banks from site. Babergh & Mid Suffolk are exploring if possible alternative schemes could provide a cost effective solution, and will, of course, keep our towns and parishes updated on developments. However, in the meantime, we continue to recycle paper and cardboard widely across Suffolk, through residents’ kerbside recycling collections – where we will also collect additional dry, flattened, cardboard left beside recycling bins, and at local recycling centres. W.I.

June 2021 Catchup On Stradbroke W.I. Hello to all the ladies of Stradbroke W.I. and all other ladies who might be reading this and have not yet tried and tested all that the Stradbroke W.I, have to offer you. Well it looks like we are back in business for our July meeting which will be at the community Centre for 7.30 to enjoy the delights of a cookery demonstration by Gill Denny who will be tantalising our taste buds with tempting dishes of the Mediterranean persuasion to help us into the mood for sunny travels and to ease us back into happier times. In fact we have a pretty varied and interesting collection of speakers this year from Life of a bee to how to do a home makeover, which of course some of you may have being doing over these last lockdown months ,our summer extravaganza not to mention clog dancing at Christmas time, so come on ladies there should be something in there to tickle your fancy. It could be that the title W.I. makes the blood of younger ladies feel a little cool as it may conjure up pictures of a bunch of grey haired old ladies sucking through their teeth as they moan about young people or just sitting around drinking tea and knitting squares for blankets .Umm yes we do all that, not the teeth sucking bit, but so much more. For a start we are pretty modern with it old ladies with various hair colours, tan levels , dancing skills ,crafting skills reading and going out to lunch skills and we all enjoy a party and a good laugh when we can. There is a community spirit which has kept us going through the last year plus of troubles and now we are ready to go again and would love to have you come and try us for size, no strings, and have you add your own special something to our group, we will make you most welcome, I promise. I look forward to meeting faces old and new, wrinkled or smooth, at our next meeting, 8th July 7.30pm at the community centre. Just to demonstrate my age I will close with, be there or be square. Um all good wishes, Prue

Stradbroke Village Archive

Ivan J F Mower 21st February 1924 - 27th April 2021 Last November SARA wrote about the WW2 Auxiliary Units, otherwise known as Churchill’s secret army, and remarked on the bravery of those that served, knowing that if they were called upon, they would have a life expectancy of just 10 days. Sadly, Ivan, who was the last remaining Stradbroke recruit, has passed away. Ivan made a recording a few years ago for the Archive recalling those war days. We learnt how Ivan was recruited, what his task was, the absolute secrecy needed and the names of all the other Stradbroke recruits, which until the last ten years or so, he was forbidden to divulge. So secret was the information that Ivan didn’t know at the time, and for a long time afterwards, that his father was also a member. We will miss seeing Ivan round the village and the reminder of courage that his presence gave. https://www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk/exhibits/show/audioandvisual/item/93 Photo - Jon Wilson Photography Vaccinations In 1840 Smallpox was rife and with an effective vaccine since 1796 the UK Government wanted all children to be vaccinated. By 1853 that became compulsory. Around this time the hypodermic syringe was invented by a physician, Alexander Wood, although how widely it was used is unsure. Prior to this, vaccine was given through a cut. Each village/town had a Medical Officer who administered the jab and a Vaccination Officer who did all the legal paperwork. In Stradbroke Mr Stanton and Mr Thirkettle were responsible for making sure every parent in the area had notice to get this done, to check the vaccination had happened or exemption agreed and if not to make the courts aware. During 1880s and 1890s there were several fines handed out by the court for this. The resulting income received was handed to the administrator of poor relief within the village. It’s also worth noting that there was a local representative of the Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League who would talk on the defendant’s behalf if requested. Letters to the Editors The late IVAN MOWER

On behalf of his family, I would very much like to thank the people of Stradbroke and around his home on Westhall for your cards and kind words following his sudden death on 27th April, and to thank you for keeping an eye on him over the years in particular this year when he still had his daily walk down the Diss Road, however slowly. Thank you also to those who gave him such a moving send off around Westhall and those who came to stand at the Chapel. Dad moved to Stradbroke at 10 years of age and it was his home for 87 years. He was trained in WW2 as part of Winston Churchill’s Secret Army (202’s) from 1940-44, to protect Stradbroke and Suffolk should the Germans have invaded which was a high possibility at that time. He worked at Etheridge’s Nursery from the time he left school aged 14 until his retirement aged 71. Finally, but not least, so many thanks to Pastor Bruce at Stradbroke Baptist Chapel for such a lovely funeral service and his input beforehand, and to those who helped him. Dad will be sadly missed, Irene Bicker (Photo Stradbroke Archive - SLHG, “Ralph Clarke and Ivan Mower - Secret Army,” Stradbroke Village Archive, accessed May 24, 2021, https://www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk/items/show/97. )

Stradbroke Cinema

Our film on June 17th will be A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood. Tom Hanks plays Mister Rogers, the beloved children’s television host who comes to the aid of a suffering magazine writer, Lloyd Vogel. Vogel is assigned to profile Rogers but is deeply sceptical about him refusing to believe anyone could be so good-natured. However, Rogers’s empathy and decency soon help Vogel become reconciled with his own painful past. An uplifting film full of hope. Subtle and sincere this film could have been a melodramatic tear-jerker but is, in fact, a deeply moving and powerful film about friendship and forgiveness. Our film on July 15th will be 23 Walks, where we hope we will be able to welcome more Cinemagoers if restrictions allow Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. We ask you to wear a mask during the performance if you are not drinking or eating a snack from the bar. There will be no interval but the bar will be open from 7pm to 7.30pm Tickets will be on sale from June 1st via the online booking system - £5.50 for adults, £3 for 16s and under. Book early to avoid disappointment! Full details can be found on the Village website that is at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt

Stradbroke resembles a flower in Spring, slowly but clearly returning to its Summer glory, bit by bit, hopefully with your local internet radio station as its companion. We continue to broadcast daily, just as Marty continues to improve daily. Sitting (or standing) for a three hour show is still beyond him, but he is still the power behind the throne. If you are a business or organisation in Stradbroke, or surrounding area and you want to tell us about any changes to opening times, services etc, feel free to email studio@radiostradbroke.co.uk We would love to know you are out there. www.radiostradbroke.co.uk Michael Hugman

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club

To quote Green Day, 'Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road', as restrictions were further eased last week, although it does seem that we may be approaching a cul-de-sac rather than a road out of Covid. Restrictions on changing, showering, eating tea, have been eased a little but not enough to safely allow any of the above for a while yet. The ban on car sharing is lifted, which considering we have a trip to Earls Colne in June, comes as a relief. Also, spectators are welcome, but as I said last month, we could not stop you anyway. Hopefully the weather will improve and you can enjoy some cricket. We have home games on Saturdays 29th May & 5th June, plus a T20 game on Sunday 20th June. We have managed two matches so far, a win at home to Stowupland where James Gilbee took 6 for 22 including his first ever hat-trick, following Richard Pierce-Saunderson signing off as a village resident with 36. We then lost at Elveden, where Gilbee was again the star with four wickets & 37 not out. Despite the cold/damp, it is good to be back. Coaching in Stradbroke, Laxfield, Fressingfield, Mendham, & Hoxne Primary Schools starts after half term, plus 'Dynamos Cricket and All Stars Cricket' at the field on Sunday mornings. There are still places available. Go to the respective websites to book. Also we start Friday Night coaching for 11 - 15 age group from June 11th. You can email fergusmorgan@hotmail.co.uk for more details. Thank you for your support. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke and District Bowls Club

The Club has begun a tentative restart, much to members’ relief and enjoyment. We have tried out our rusty skills and enjoyed each other’s company once again. The Saxmundham League has begun competitive games, with the Waveney League looking to resume from 22nd June. The Club also continues friendly games known as roll-ups to which we would welcome all ages, whether new to the sport or taking it up again. Contact David Cattermole on 01379 384779 Jennifer Chetwynd on 01379 384069 or Roy Lee on 01379 384729 for more details. On behalf of Roy Lee, who we wish well in his recovery from hip surgery.

Tennis Club

The Club has welcomed a number of new members since we were able to re-open the Courts and has decided to add a further social play slot for members. In addition to Monday and Thursday afternoons between 1.30pm and 4.00pm there is a further opportunity for social play on Tuesday evenings between 6.00pm and 7.00pm on two courts. The third court will still be available to non-members for hire. The Club is continuing to welcome new members of all standards and remains at very good value as subscriptions for this year have not been increased. For further details please contact me on 01379 384557. Non members can hire a court through Everyone Active at £8.00 an hour per court for adults and £4.00 an hour for under 16. To hire a court contact Everyone Active on 01379 384376. Petanque

The Eye Petanque Club is now expecting to play on a regular basis with the relaxation of the Covid regulations. As we make a fresh start, we are hoping to recruit new members from the Waveney Valley area and further afield. Young and old, beginners and newcomers, as well as experienced players are all welcome to join us at out club terrain at Eye Community Centre, Magdalen Street, Eye. We play (weather permitting) on Wednesdays and most Sunday mornings. Petanque is an easy outdoor game to play, with health benefits and great fun for very little financial outlay. Even for those who do not want to commit to regular weekly play, we would encourage you to join us to experience the pleasures of the game. RoughCast – The Tempest – Touring June 21st – July 11th Following their recent popular summer tours of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night, RoughCast return to Shakespeare with a typically fast-moving and energetic production of the most magical of his comedies. Not only that, he has to cope with rebellious spirits and drunken servants as well as arrange the marriage of his beloved daughter Miranda. With a production rehearsed and performed in covid-secure conditions RoughCast invites you back to live theatre on a balmy summer evening once more: "Oh brave new world!" Stradbroke Allotment news and up coming events

After all the rain that we have had over the winter months, the plots were very water logged. My leeks thought they were in a swimming pool at one point and when we went up just before Christmas to pull up the parsnips, my husband’s feet got stuck in the mud. I went to help him and the same thing happened to me. We both ended up having to pull each other’s feet out of the wellies first. It reminded me of the good life when Margo and Jerry went to help the Goods after the storm and they all ended up stuck in the mud. What a contrast with the spring weather. It changed to being very dry. As we are on clay, it dry’s and then cracks, so a good mulch with a mushroom or organic compost really helps the soil. Recently we opened the black barn and offered some lovely cream teas. It was a great success, so we will be having another afternoon cream tea and a produce sale. This will be held on Sunday the 30th May on the allotment from 2 pm until 4 pm. We are also very lucky to have Martin Tickler who is going to be giving a talk on Wednesday 23rd June at 7 pm in the Court House Stradbroke, about House Martins. This has been provisionally booked and may change due to the Government guidelines. If you would like to attend A Night with the Martins, then tickets will be on sale in the library for £3 each and we will be selling cakes and teas with a raffle. Please bring along your own drinking vessel, unless anything changes. On Sunday July 18th 10 am until 2 pm. A work shop printing with Nature will be held in the Black Barn. You will be able to print on a bag, or cushion cover, with your own design taken from the natural surroundings. The cost for the workshop (with lunch included) will be £15 per person. If you are interested in attending this work shop, then ring 07742 495249 to book your place. On Sunday 1st August, we will be holding a craft and produce sale offering tables to craft persons. More information about this will be in next month’s Stradbroke Monthly. During the pandemic, the allotments have been a special place to be able to go and get exercise. It has been a tranquil and safe place to be, so not surprisingly all the plots have been taken, once again we do have a waiting list. You can contact M Thompson on 01379 384737 if you would like your name put onto the list. M Thompson

Want to be part of the chicken co-operative?

Is there anyone who would like to help the chicken co-operative, (based at the Stradbroke Allotments)? We are a small group of 3 people, but it would be lovely to be able to have someone to join our team. You would look after them on set days and perhaps more over the holidays, letting them out and putting them to bed, in return you would get free range eggs! Also you would be asked to contribute financially to their food and help to clean them out etc. It’s a great hobby, especially being out in the sun! Anyone interested please give us a call Kay 01379 388393 or Karen on 07943964264 or Sue 01379 384502. Sue Childs

We are rightly proud of the contribution that Suffolk is making to deliver clean and green energy as we have become a magnet for renewable energy production. Suffolk offers one of driest climates in England with longer hours of daily sunshine and miles of coastline, so it is seen as the perfect location for solar energy and of course, offshore wind. Most of us will recognise and celebrate the benefits that renewable energy can bring, including much needed jobs for local people, as well as helping us to achieve our net zero carbon emission targets. However, these large scale energy projects cannot continue to be brought about in a piecemeal fashion without proper consideration for the potential consequences to some of our local communities. With increasing numbers of planning applications for solar parks in our area, the time has come for our councils to plan more strategically for larger local energy projects. Rather than viewing each planning application for solar energy individually, we need a more joined up approach. Our local councils must work together to develop a strategic plan for the future development of solar power in Suffolk. Whilst we should support appropriately sited solar parks (preferably on brownfield sites), there is also an imperative for our council planners to balance green energy production against the need to protect the countryside which makes Suffolk such an attractive place to live and work. Undoubtedly Suffolk will continue to grow as an energy hub, so it is essential that future energy development is sited in the right locations, so as not to blight our communities or damage our natural environment. Since becoming the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, I have worked hard to support local communities fight against inappropriate planning developments. In the energy sector, I helped to see off the mid-Suffolk straw burning power station plans and I worked successfully alongside Tim Yeo (the former MP for South Suffolk) to ensure that new power lines were installed underground (rather than overhead) throughout the beautiful Fynn Valley. Recently, we have seen proposals coming forward for a number of new solar parks near Bramford and concerning plans to install new overhead power pylons between Bramford and Twinstead, which would be a blight to our beautiful Suffolk landscape. My view is that new power lines should, wherever possible, always be underground, and ideally, put offshore in the sea bed. So I am currently working with other MPs to make the case to the National Grid and I shall continue to do all that I can to protect the Suffolk countryside from the threat of additional overhead electricity pylons. However, solar parks are a local planning matter and as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is both an opportunity and a need for our local councils to work together to deliver a strategic local energy plan for Suffolk. If we get it right, there is a tremendous opportunity to grow more green jobs, support our local economy, protect the countryside, and to move swiftly towards a zero-carbon society. www.drdanielpoulter.com

COVID19 - LIFE IN STRADBROKE PROJECT Send us your #vaccineselfies

The Stradbroke Archive and Record Association (SARA) has set up a new online archive to capture what life is like in lockdown for the residents of Stradbroke. It is hoped that by collecting our social history of this global event in real time, that generations to come will have a real window into our village experience in 2020/21 This new archive is slightly different to the other two online archives, it is designed to allow really easy upload by villagers of their contributions - anyone can add photographs, short videos, memories (as text) and audio recordings from computers, tablets and mobile phones! SARA want to capture the every day types of experiences as well as the special events such as VE Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day etc... SARA want the village of now and in the future to see how the global pandemic has changed and affected our day to day life, so join in and add your experiences.
