Friends of All Saints Church

Delighted that our clock is back to its old self. The work on the outside of the Church, water disposal, gutters and a 100 patches to the side aisle roof, was completed with a £10000 grant from Historic England, Taylor Review, and £4,000 from The Friends of the Church. There is considerably more work required; the last major overhaul/repair was in 1872 and those Victorian repairs need restoration. We thank everyone for their continuing support. From the Rectory…

Dear friends and neighbours, February, a month when some of our thoughts turn to love… There are different types of love; between parents and children, siblings, friends and of course the love that is shared between couples. Different types of love all share one important ingredient; relationships take time and work if they are to flourish. As a church we are here to recognise and celebrate love in various forms such as marriage, thanksgiving services for children, baptisms and funeral services. This month we want to focus on the love that is shared by married couples and so we are inviting couples who got married in any one of our local churches, whether that is recent or years ago, to join us as we celebrate marriage by coming together, maybe reminiscing about your wedding day, and, if you would like to, share some of the highs and lows of your married life together. However, nothing is expected of you; we won’t be asking you to say anything publicly, we just want to recognise your married life together and celebrate it. So, if you are able come along for a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake, in Sancroft Hall in Fressingfield on Sunday 9th February at 4pm, we would love to see you. There won’t be a service or anything you need to do, but if you intend to come please let me know, for catering purposes, via email or phone For those of us on our own, well, we don’t have to miss out on love; singleness can be a gift too. There is the love we share with family and friends and of course the great love God has for each one of us… I have heard it said many times that to have a good friend, you need to be a good friend, but with God, even if we don’t love him, he loves us because he does so unconditionally. God bless, Susan

January 2020 Meeting Of Stradbroke W.I. The meeting opened with a welcome from our new President Linda Webb who wished us all well for the new year and in turn we say thank you to her for taking on the role of President and good fortune to her and her new committee. We sang Jerusalem and thanked our hostesses Viv and Jane J for the flowers and the upcoming refreshments then to business. It has been mooted that it would be a good idea if we changed the time of our January and February meetings from evening to afternoons , this was put to the meeting and agreed that we will try it in 2021 so watch this space. Sadly we heard that Jean Morgan lost her husband David before Christmas and our thoughts and sympathies were expressed for her and her family, also Sue Gray is unwell and we send her our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Next the meeting was introduced to Andy Malcolm our speaker from the charity the Fishermans Mission. Andy introduced himself telling us how his mother in law had seen an advert for someone to work at the mission as a fundraiser and coordinator and like all sensible men he listened to this wise lady went for the interview and was offered the job. Raising money to help fishermen and their families during difficult times is the main object of his job but also raising the profile of the charity and their work is part of his remit .This he achieves by dressing up in full yellow oilskins and standing outside big supermarkets with banners and posters, brave fellow. Andy told us funny stories and stories tinged with sadness but also those which tell how with the help of the charity injured fishermen and their families have been supported through very hard dark times and come out into the sunshine and for some even back to sea. With a pretty fine baritone voice he sang some sea shanties and had us joining in with the chorus and with some gusto when it came to cockles and mussels alive alive o. We were also treated to a funny poem about fishfingers and learned that an average of 1800.00 of these fishy delights are eaten world wide every second, perhaps the mission could turn its attention to all these fingerless fish poor things! A quick quiz told us that salmon is our favourite fish and cod a close second plus the fact that we eat 38 million portions of fish and chips a year the first portion being served in about the 1860 era. Fish and chips was the only food not rationed in the war on the instruction of Winston Churchill who decreed that we needed this old companion by our side, thanks Winnie. The presentation concluded and we visited his stall of goodies happy to support this useful charity and Annie gave a vote of thanks. Refreshments, birthday posies and the raffle concluded the evening and we all left thinking perhaps our lives were not as hard as some and grateful for people like Andy. Our next meeting is on 13th Feb, when Magdelaine Snowden will speak to us about Hats and Crafts and Flowermaking, so come and join us try us out for size all welcome. Prue Rush

The next Friday Friends Café is Friday 7th February 2020. These café sessions are dementia friendly and there is always someone on hand to talk to, for those that need advice and support. We also welcome people that are lonely and just want to come along for a friendly chat. I would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Sue Childs and her committee for the money we received from the Christmas Lights Switch-On Celebrations in the church. The money will go towards providing a 2-course lunch in the café for our Friday Friends group during March. Come and put your name down if you would like to be included, at our next Friday Friends meeting, booking is essential so that we know how many people we are catering for. A new stock of greeting cards has arrived in the library, so pop in and have a look. Postage stamps generally go up at the end of March-last year they went up 3p per stamp, so it might be a good idea to stock up before the expected price rise Afternoon Tea at The Courthouse Café on Sunday 29th March 2020 at 3pm Tickets £7. Wingfield and District Gardening Club

At the end of November Matt Tatton Brown told us about the poison garden. I had no idea that so many of our usual garden plants were toxic. One does equate things like snowdrops and daffodils as poisonous whereas plants such as ivy box, yew are well known, foxglove, helebores, aconites, daphne, delphinium and camelias less so. It seems that one must take more care if one has skin that is easily prone to reaction and if in doubt, wear gloves where necessary. Several times he mentioned the poison garden at Alnwick in Northumberland as a good source of information and worth a visit if you are in the area. Our first meeting this year us on 30th January with a talk by Ian Limmer from Beales on pruning all types of roses, followed on 22nd February by our visits to Gardens in Winter at Church Farm, Wilbby, and Old Hall Cottage Gardens, at Pixie Green. Salute the Soldier Week 1944 In the summer of 1944, during WW2 the country held ‘Salute the Soldier’ week in order to raise funds to help Britain make its final assault on Nazi Germany. On the Saturday evening Stradbroke did its part by holding a Pageant mainly at The Priory where most of the villagers took part. The Pageant was produced by Canon K. E. Shaw with Mrs. H. J Neave as Mistress of the Robes. It depicted scenes from the life of Bishop Robert Grosseteste, a boy who was born c1175 in Stradbroke and in time, became The Bishop of Lincoln. The first scene of the Pageant was of Grosseteste as a small boy (played by Gordon Nunn) absorbed in reading, while his playmates are dancing round the maypole to the strains of the fiddle. The story goes on to tell how the Lord of the Manor, gave his consent to the young Grosseteste to go and study with the Holy Fathers. A further scene was that of the villagers coming to pay their taxes or tithe to the Lord of the Manor – “one old fellow provided a bit of amusement when, as he had no money, he brought a live goose. When tithing money had been paid the villagers brought their complaints - one man was punished by being placed in the stocks.” In the final scene, Lord Le Roux attended by his page and squire, and followed by men-at-arms (all mounted on horseback and dressed in shining armour, ready to go on crusade) processed to the church followed by the villagers and the monks. All were singing the National Anthem. Once there, they received the blessing of “Stradbroke’s greatest man.” A United Open-Air Service was held on the Rectory lawn on the Sunday evening. when various organisations were present including U.S. troops. There was a large congregation and the service conducted by Canon K. E. Shaw and Mr. W. T. Oliver (Baptist), the address was given by Capt. Spencer. U.S.A.A.F. who gave a very interesting straight gospel talk. That week the village came together in a common cause and raised £8,668/17s/8d. Amazing, amazing, AMAZING! Council Notes From the Chair...

It was great to see so many people again at the Christmas lights switch on event. A big thank you to Sue Childs and her team for the work they did organising the event this year. Christmas now seems like a long time ago and the Council has already started its new year work. A big focus of our work this year is to try and improve the road situation and make a difference to traffic issues which is something we received a lot of feedback about last year. With this in mind, we are holding a highways information event on Tuesday 18th February (details below) and we really need as many people as possible to come along as we will need to show strong public support if we push to have, for example, a 20mph speed limit through the centre of the village. The next parish council meeting is on Monday 10th February 7.30pm at the Court House. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is a public forum at the start of every meeting to enable residents to speak on issues relevant to the agenda. See more on the parish council website at http://stradbrokepc.org James Hargrave, Chair Stradbroke Parish Council

Highways Information Event for Stradbroke

18th February 2020: 1-4pm and 7-9pm – Courthouse, Queen Street The Parish Council are holding a public information event on proposals for improvements to the roads in Stradbroke. These include: ¥ 20mph zone ¥ Double yellow lines at the junction of Queen St and Church St ¥ Village gateways at the entrances to the 30mph zones ¥ 30mph repeater signs on the roads ¥ Build-outs To enable a 20mph zone to be considered it is very important to demonstrate that there is local support for it. Therefore, residents will have the opportunity to review all the information available, including the cost to the village, and comment on the options presented. These comments will be used as evidence of village support for the council to pursue the options with Suffolk County Council. The recently completed Parish Infrastructure Investment Plan (PIIP) will also be available to view. Odile Wladon, Clerk

Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. The bar is open before the start and during the interval when ice creams will also be on sale. Learn: Classic Cinema Matinees

Our final film of our Winter season of classic films is “Akenfield”. This beautiful 1974 film of Ronald Blythe’s book captures a picture of rural Suffolk in 1969. The book is a close documentary of a supposedly fictional village although, in fact, the details are from Charsfield and Parham and featuring many local people talking about their lives. 50 years on, it is a fascinating glimpse into how Suffolk village life has changed but also stayed the same in many ways. The performance will be on Wednesday, February 12th at 2.00pm at Stradbroke Community Centre with a short introduction to the film and finishing with refreshments. The cost will be £6.50 including tea and cakes. For further details or enquiries please contact me at gillianrenniedunkerley@hotmail.com or 01379 384248 or 07730011951. We look forward to seeing you there. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley

Everyone is welcome to attend, the bar will be open and a variety of exhibits will be put on display to illustrate what the future may hold for Stradbroke. News and Views Publishers of new book delighted with response

The publishers of a new book aimed at helping people who are bereaved say they are thrilled with the response following a public appeal for stories and recipes. Cooking for One will be published in the summer and will contain valuable advice on the importance of self-help following the bereavement of a loved one, particularly in situations where one partner has been r Alongside the submissions received so far, a number of professional chefs and well-known personalities have also pledged their support by offering tips and recipes of their own. Simon Beckett-Allen, director of Rosedale Funeral Home, who was inspired to write the book following the death of sister in 2015, said: “The response has been really heart-warming with some lovely stories and great recipes, but also real-life experiences of how people cope in a really difficult situation. “In many cases, on top of the grieving process, we have heard how partners have had to take on additional responsibilities”, Simon added. “Whether it’s cooking for themselves, dealing with family finances for the first time or suddenly realising that many odd jobs around the home were done by their partner. Everybody’s grief is unique to them, but we hope that there will be some valuable insight in the book from others that can provide help and support along with some great recipes.” There is still time to submit a story and recipe for publication in Cooking for One. All profits from the sale of the book will be donated to Cruse Bereavement Care. Online submissions are open until the end of April. More information can be found at rosedalefuneralhome.co.uk/cookingforone. There is also a printed form available for download on the website for anyone who would rather submit their story and recipe by post. Mark Matthews

Help for those most in need to remain at home

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have approved a new Housing Assistance Policy to help residents suffering with a long-term illness adapt their homes. The councils approved the introduction of a local grant scheme, called the Minor Adaptations Grant, to offer financial support to enable residents to carry out minor adaptations to their home up to £7,500, enabling them to remain live independently and safely in their homes for longer. Works covered within the new scheme include ramps, bathing/washing facilities, additional heating, stairlifts, key safes and wash/dry toilets. The Housing Assistance Policy, forms part of the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), and is specifically designed to meet specialist needs not covered by mandatory DFG without the need for applicants to be means tested. Through the scheme the councils will be able to target those most in need, who may currently not be able to live independently at home and allocate resources in a shorter time scale, allowing disabled residents to live in suitable accommodation, enabling them to live as independently as possible. The Minor Adaptations Grant supports anyone with an identified need for adaptations including those ‘Living with Dementia’, those suffering with or caring for someone with a ‘Terminal Illness’ or needing ‘End of Life’ support, or those needing quick adaptations to their home after a stay in hospital ‘Home from Hospital’. Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Jan Osborne, said: “What seem like relatively small improvements can have a major impact on someone’s quality of life. Often illness is unplanned and doesn’t give residents much time to make the necessary arrangements at home. We’ve made the process for the Minor Adaptions Grant more straightforward, which should help to enable residents to leave hospital and return to the comfort of their own home quicker than they might have been able to previously.” Mid Suffolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Julie Flatman, said: “Making sure our residents across the districts are able to live safely and comfortably in their own homes for as long as possible is really important. This grant will allow people with a variation of long-term illnesses or who require more support in their home, to carry out minor improvements that will make a real difference to their quality of life.” The councils are encouraging residents in both districts to come forward to apply for the grants which will cover a range of adaptions including; • Installing bathroom fittings • Removing door thresholds • Widening doors • Level access shower

Dan Poulter, MP

Page 31

I was honoured to be returned as Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich on December 13th and especially delighted to be re-elected for a fourth term, with the added bonus of securing an increased majority. It is a huge privilege and I would like to thank everyone for the confidence that they have shown in me and for the tremendous support I have received, for which I am enormously appreciative. During the election campaign, my team and I visited every part of the constituency on at least one occasion – from Hoxne and Eye in the North, Kesgrave and North Ipswich in the South, Wickham Market in the East, Mendlesham in the West, Debenham, Framlingham and many more in between. I spent a considerable amount of time in North Ipswich and was especially pleased that the election period allowed me to give my undivided attention to residents, whilst also giving me the opportunity to listen to people’s views and have numerous conversations which will help me to better represent you over the next five years. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during the last Parliament as well as during the weeks of the General Election campaign, and I have been humbled by the hundreds of messages of support and encouragement that I have received. In the months and years ahead, my priority will always be to represent the people of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich to the very best of my ability. Living in a predominantly rural county like Suffolk, our road infrastructure is simply vital in connecting our rural communities and enabling those who live and work here to travel easily to and from school, our place of work, to visit friends and family and to access local services, such as hospital appointments or local facilities. With the announcement of the next Budget on March 11th, I will continue to do all that I can to support our County Council colleagues and my fellow MPs in lobbying Government for much needed cash to improve and maintain our road network. It is an enormous honour and privilege to be elected to represent the residents of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich again in Parliament and I shall do my utmost to fulfil the trust that has been placed in me and continue to work hard and do my best for all my constituents.
