Exclusive interview with Martine McCutcheon Martine McCutcheon first found fame as Tiffany Mitchell in Eastenders in the 1990s, before releasing her platinum-selling debut solo album ‘You, Me & Us’ in 1999 containing the No. 1 single ‘Perfect Moment’. West End and TV roles followed and along the way she became the nation’s sweetheart. In 2003, Martine memorably played Natalie opposite Hugh Grant in ‘Love Actually.’

Now 41, happily married, mother of a 2 year old, the time felt right to return to the studio.

Martine has co-written most of the songs on the new album ‘Lost and Found’ with her husband, the multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jack McManus, and she has never sounded better!

Martine is back not only musically; she also reprised her role in the Comic Relief reunion of ‘Love Actually’ earlier this year and has just wrapped a film with Alan Davies called ‘The Bromley Boys.’

However it’s music that’s her main focus. First single ‘Say I’m Not Alone’, is a song like nothing Martine has ever recorded before; big, bold, brash, merging clanging guitars, thumping drums and a hard hitting lyric. Other album highlights include the rocky ‘Any Sign Of Life’, the beautiful ‘Stay With Me’ (which is a duet with Jack) and album closer ‘Rebellion’.

The album is a deeply personal record that deals with everything from relationships to Martine's debilitating illness that saw her unable to work. “Life brought this album about very gradually,” explains Martine. “It was a really unconscious thing; I started writing the songs at a time in my life when I’d lost everything.”

Terry Sullivan from The Sticks spoke to Martine recently about her career and the new album A lot of people remember you from your days on Eastenders and it was so sad when you left. I know, luckily everyone recovered and we were all alright in the end Then you went on to do “Love Actually”, that must have been an amazing experience? Both were absolutely brilliant because the team and the cast around you are just amazing and you don’t often get to work with your dream team and that was the case with me on both things. I had always been a massive fan of Barbara Windsor and I got to meet and work with her on Eastenders and then I got to work with Hugh Grant, Richard Curtis and that amazing team. I pinched myself.

It was the best thing ever.

What is Hugh Grant like, is he as nice as he seems? He is lovely but he is a nightmare till he has had his cup of tea, he can be really grumpy in the mornings!

We had great fun though, we are so different and from different backgrounds and in a way that made us spark off each other. It was great. On screen we had amazing chemistry; you want to make it believable and tap in to that movie magic.

How did you get in to the acting business, were you like me, a bit of a show off at school? Yes, I was always a very confident, bubbly, happy, bouncy little thing. I just had this energy so my mum started sending me to dance lessons locally in Hackney in east London. There was this lady there with skin like leather and she was about 80 years old and she had a beehive and constantly had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, how things have changed. She would teach me the dances and she said to my mum “you know what, Martine is actually quite good”.

My mum had no idea; no one in my family was in the industry at all. She suggested another teacher who trained me for a year and managed to get me to Italia Conti, the stage school in London and I was trained from there. They had an agency, I worked doing shows and adverts. It just seemed mapped out for me, that was the path I was going to go down.

Would you like to do Strictly or have you been asked? I have been asked to do Strictly but the thing is I have a thing called M.E and Lymes disease which is something you have to manage as your muscles can fatigue quite easily or you can get run down and tired. It is fine till it flares up; I can go for ages without having any issues at all. I have spoken to Greg Rutherford and some of the other top athletes who have taken part and they have told me the schedule is a killer, an absolute killer. They don’t stop for 17 hours a day and I don’t know if I could cope with that.

You do acting, singing, musical theatre and lots more besides, if I pinned you down and said you could only do one thing, what would it be? If I was to do one thing my clever answer would be to do musical theatre because you still get to act and sing and because I was trained at school to do different things, mostly to stay employed, so it is hard to pick one. The first thing I fell in love with was the music because you can tell stories in your own way and use your own words as opposed to someone else’s. I think there is something a bit more honest about that. I like acting as well because I do not feel I am playing a part, I feel I have all the different characters in me and I just sort of tap in to those. I really love what I do.

Is there a role you would like to play? There are loads of different things I would love to do I would love to have been in Moulin Rouge, I have never done a musical film, I have done musicals and movies but never done the two things together, so would love to do something like that.

You had a big number one single called ‘Perfect Moment’ in 1999. I had grown up loving strong women singers like Barbra Streisand, Stevie Nicks, I like thing with a great melody and a great vocal. I was like a little old lady, at the time when you had all this grunge music; I thought no, I am going to release a ballad. I think it is the number one wedding song.

The new album “Lost and Found” has a very different sound to it. It is a sound that evolved over a period of time. I had a lot of growing up to do, I became very well known at 18 and grew up in the public eye and I had my up and downs. I took some time out as I just need to rest and lick my wounds about a few things and also trying to be a mum. There were some really dark times but then I had my aha moment where I decided it was time to get out there and kick butt again. This album was never meant to be for public consumption, it was always meant to be just for me to get me through a difficult time that lasted longer than I wanted it to but by the end of it my husband Jack McManu,s who did it with me, played it to somebody and they said it would be signed by a big label and it is time to get Martine out there again. It was scary to get back on that horse again. But I need not have worried as the response it has had has been amazing.

Can you remember the first record you ever brought? Yes, it was Ant Music by Adam and the Ants, I was absolutely in love with him at the time. He was more beautiful than most of the women.

Poor Investigation Results in Pay-out of £20k at Employment Tribunal.

A Poundland store manager was unfairly and wrongfully dismissed when she was fired for allegedly stealing a drink, Norwich Employment Tribunal has ruled.

Miss Stokes was awarded £20,930.48 plus costs after employment judge Postle found that the discount chain had no reasonable basis for its belief of her supposed misconduct and followed a flawed investigation process.

Stokes worked at Poundland from 2009 as an assistant manager and later store manager. She was successful in her role until a new area sales manager joined in 2015.

In June 2017, area sales manager, Ian Jones, and the acting store manager entered Stokes’ office without warning to investigate an allegation that she had taken drinks from the damaged stock area. She was told that CCTV footage showed her consuming the drinks, although she was only shown a few seconds of her walking with a drink in her hand.

Matthew Pinto-Chilcott from Consensus HR comments “This case, held at the Employment Tribunal (ET) – Norwich - Case Number: 3327953/2017 in April this year, demonstrates how companies still get it wrong when dealing with discipline in the workplace. Too many times management fail to act in a reasonable manner and take the correct / necessary steps. The ACAS Code of Practice clearly details how these should be done professionally, fairly and reasonably and can be obtained easily on the internet.

An investigation is a key, vital step that needs to be taken at all times prior to any action being taken and needs to be thorough taking into account the allegation.

Managers / Business owners need to make clear what the allegation is and what area of a fair reason this constitutes. Is it Conduct, Capability, Performance, Some Other Substantial Reason, Compulsory Bar, Redundancy and list this in all correspondence. This helps to ensure everybody is aware of the allegation whilst allowing a full / comprehensive investigation to take place.”

YOUR LOCAL SOLICITORS Who do you trust ?

If you were suddenly incapacitated – whether physically or mentally, who would you choose to look after your personal and financial affairs ? Because if you haven’t yet set them up formally as your Attorney, you could find someone else takes charge.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 introduced the principles that all adults should be assumed to be able to make decisions for themselves unless it is proved otherwise; and just because someone is making an unwise decision they shouldn’t be treated as being unable to make that decision.

you appoint someone (your Attorney) to make decisions on your behalf in relation to your property and financial matters, and even your health and welfare matters.

your Attorney can be given the power to accept or refuse life-sustaining treatment on your behalf.

you can appoint more than one Attorney, and be very specific about what power(s) you want them to have

•

they allow you to choose your Attorney now, rather than leaving it to someone else to apply to the Court of Protection to become your Deputy once you have lost capacity.

•

it does not mean that from the moment you complete the forms your Attorney takes over making decisions for you as they must be registered to be effective

Advance decision to refuse treatment:– •

a legally binding document that allows you to specify particular kinds of treatment that you don’t want (in case you lack the capacity to make this decision for yourself at some point).

Statement of your preferences and wishes:– •

this is not a legally binding document, but it enables the people looking after you to understand what your care preferences are and they would usually be required to take your stated views into account as part of any decisions they make for you.

Once it has been decided you have lost the capacity to make decisions for yourself, to include giving instructions to a solicitor, it is too late to plan for your future – so do it NOW. Remember, it is not just the elderly who lose capacity – it could happen to anyone of any age as a result of a major accident or trauma.

Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes July

ARIES (March21st-April20th) CANCER (June22nd-July23rd)

Feature on Artist and Gallery Owner - Joanne Bowes Following careers in PR and Education, Joanne graduated as a mature student in 2011 with Contemporary Applied Arts BA (Hons) from the University of Hertfordshire. Since then she has shown work locally with Artists’ Network Bedfordshire and Herts Visual Arts in addition to helping to organise and curate exhibitions with the Discover - Original Artists collective.

In October 2017 she realised her long-term dream of opening an Art Gallery - The Workhouse in Dunstable. With a not-for-profit ethos Joanne’s aim is to offer exhibition space to local makers, at affordable prices and develop a creative hub where artists and art lovers can mingle in a relaxed environment.

She is strongly influenced by the natural environment and combines this with a deep interest in traditional skills especially weaving, stitching and natural dyeing.

She admires William Morris’s work and ideals; landscape artists including Monet, Turner and Van Gogh and is inspired by architects from Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Corbusier to Norman Foster At University she studied the Isle of Harris weavers and was fascinated by their tradition of dyeing yarns using local lichens and plants, thus creating a weave which directly reflected their own environment. This led to her specialism in natural dyeing and direct contact printing, using leaves and plant material, which she incorporates into cotton scarves and handmade sketch books.

More recently Joanne has developed her own pigments from natural dyes and uses these to create

abstracted watercolour paintings of local fields and hills, which in turn reference the original plants from which they were created.

She is also excited by projects based on local social history, creating textile-based art in response to her research. She was part of the Herts Textiles Arts’ Ebb & Flow Exhibition at Parndon Mill where her work reflected her weekly walks along the River Lea from Leagrave to Hertford and currently has work at Mill Green Museum as part of the Threads of Time II Exhibition which drew inspiration from the Delme Radcliffe papers in the Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies Centre Despite her busy day to day running of “The Workhouse Gallery” she is continuing to walk sections of the River Lea, creating hand-dyed books using leaves gathered during her travels. As part of this she will also be producing work to support the restoration of the mediaeval sunken road at Broxbourne.

Finally, Joanne’s Dunstable Heritage Textile Project, based at The Workhouse, is inspiring a group of the town’s residents to produce artwork drawn from different aspects of local history which will be shown in the gallery in the Autumn.

Beer and Cheese Pairing Beer and cheese pairing is becoming more and more popular these days, and men especially couldn’t be more thrilled. They’re a natural pairing, and how can you be upset when you’re munching cheese and sipping a great beer?

The three aspects to think about when pairing beer with cheese are Comparative, Contrasting, and Regional. Comparative, hit acid with acid. Contrasting, enjoying that big chocolate stout with a fat, creamy cheese. Regional, it goes back to the phrase “If it grows together it goes together,” and that’s quite often true, especially with cheese and beer. The closer a cheesemaker and brewer are, the more their matches seem to work.

When you're preparing a cheese plate, your first instinct may be to crack open some bottles of wine, but beer and cheese have been paired together for centuries. Monasteries and farms frequently produced both, and so cheese and beer played a major role in those monks' and farmers' diets. But what should you pour if you're trying to pair beer and cheese at home?

Beer's better - and there's a couple of reasons. First is the effervescence. Beer is constantly scrubbing your palate clean with carbonation, whereas with wine your palate becomes more and more dead with every sip. Also, beer and cheese are parallel in terroir, because the animals that produce cheese eat grains, and beer is a grain-based beverage. There's very little connection between grapes and cheese, but there is a very direct connection between grains and cheese. When you taste beer and cheese together, the cheese will draw out the grain qualities in the beer and tie it all together.

How do you go about choosing cheese to pair with beer? Is there a step-by-step process or questions you ask yourself?

Begin with the beer and start with the lightest, brightest beer, and then work your way up the scale in colour and alcohol from there. Alcohol is hard, hops are hard, so the bigger the flavour of your beer, the more you have to think about a bigger flavour to go with it.

On the lighter end, you want something with more acidity, and on the heavier end, you're thinking about weight. Quite often you can serve a light beer like a Belgian table beer or a weisse and pair them with a higher-acid cheese like a fresh

Ladysmith cow's milk cheese from Samish Bay that's only a couple days old. It has a bright acidity and a nice lactic tang that works great with light, bright beers.

As you go up the scale, you'll want to pair bigger flavours with bigger flavours, without overwhelming either. For example, with an imperial stout, instead of trying to trump the massive flavour in the beer, you'll want to pair it something like a triple creme that helps envelope the beer with fat.

Acidity is key. Fruit has an innate brightness, so you have to bring acid with your cheese pairing. A lot of cheeses can be very salty, and fruit beer has a tendency to magnify that saltiness, so we quickly realised that high-acid cheeses were the way to go. We tried some flabbier, less acidic cheeses, but the fruit beer quickly overwhelmed them.

What kinds of cheese just don't work with beer?

Sheep's milk cheeses are hard to pair with beer. The sweeter-like lanolin notes you get from sheep's milk cheeses really become prominent alongside the esters in beer. It's funny, because with wine it's not really the case, but with beer, it's the one kind of cheese that's always tough.

What kinds of beer just don't work with cheese?

Really hoppy beers are the hardest to pair with cheese. If you really want to pair a cheese with a super-hoppy beer, you need to go with a sharp, 10-year aged cheddar or something similar. Something that has a lot of sharp acidity. Rogue Creamery Smokey Blue is another one that has enough guts and a little bit of smoke to handle the hops. It doesn't quite make sense why it works, but it's one that consistently I lean on in those situations.

Herbs Herbs can make any meal and can be very healthy when added to food or used to make tea with - mint, camomile. Even if you don’t have much space your garden you can still enjoy summer basil on your windowsill or fresh rosemary at your back door all year round.

Here’s a selection of wines to look out for in 2018 Cremant (sparkling wine) The powerhouses of champagne and prosecco had better watch over their shoulders as there is a new kid on the block, and what a star this is.

This wine style can be found in the Loire Valley, Alsace and Burgundy, the latter being harder to find, and it helps being able to go direct to smaller producers and vineyards. Cremant uses the Champagne Method often called Traditional Method, but costs half the price, and giving the same quality with a lovely brioche and buttery structure.

Negroamaro This red wine grape can be found in the heal of Italy’s far south in Puglia, unlike most areas of Italy which have been well established and recognized by the world, this area and grape has to try so much harder to get noticed, it has an incredible structure for a wine at this lower price point and fantastic long-lasting flavour with savoury tones and black cherry noticeable, making this a crowd-pleasing variety.
