FILIPINO-CHINESE gaming lord Charlie Ang earns more than P2.37 billion a month using his Meridien Vista Gaming Corp. as a legal front to continue his illegal jueteng operations in 13 provinces, the head of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office said Friday. Contrary to Ang’s claims that he was operating a jai alai game using his Meridien Vista Gaming Corp., PCSO general manager Alexander Balutan said the recent raids in the provinces showed that

he was bankrolling the illegal jueteng operations there. “For him that is legal, but if you go to the provinces where he is operating it’s not jai alai but jueteng, which is estimated to be earning around P2.37 billion a month. Yearly it’s its P28 billion,” Balutan told dwFM radio. He called on the Bureau of Internal Revenue to collect Ang’s back taxes amounting to more than P25 billion. “While he gains much from his illegal gambling operations, he has failed to do pay the government for more than nine years,” Balutan said. Terror threat won’t hurt economy—DTI By John Paolo Bencito TRADE Secretary Ramon Lopez said Friday that the threat of terrorist attacks on top tourist destinations will have no negative effect on tourism and the economic growth experienced in recent years. In a media b riefing in Hong Kong, Lopez said the government remains in control of the country’s security situation even as the British government warned its citizens against traveling to areas around the Sulu archipelago, including some towns in Cebu due to “credible information” that the Abu Sayyaf group is planning to stage kidnappings there. Earlier, the US, British and Canadian governments also warned their nationals against visiting Palawan, a top tourist destination. “In our country, as you know, that’s being contained... The President likewise stressed his approach to use all resources of the government, military, and police to really run after the terrorist groups to address the security problem, most especially in the Mindanao area,” Lopez said. Lopez emphasized that the country’s economic potentials remain bright, citing the 31

percent increase in investments from January to April alone, compared to negative figures recorded in the last year. Lopez said Filipinos should not let the terrorist threat endanger economic growth and potential. “Let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot again, that when there are already good opportunities coming ahead of us, there are many who would negate it,” he said. The President had earlier ordered sustained operations against the Abu Sayyaf, ordering security forces to finish off terrorists by shooting them on sight. Following earlier travel warnings, the UK issued a new alert to its nationals to stay away from the Sulu archipelago, including the southern Cebu towns of Dalaguete and Badian amid talk of more kidnappings in those areas. “The Philippine authorities reported that they had received unsubstantiated but credible information that the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf may be about to conduct kidnaps in the Sulu Sea, including around the islands of the Sulu archipelago and the seas/islands off the east coast of Sabah [Malaysia],” the UK Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Palace to review proposals on EJK PH war on illegal drugs gets failing grade—UN By John Paolo Bencito and Sara Susanne Fabunan

M

ALACAÑANG on Thursday vowed to review recommendations made by 45 out of 47 countries before the United Nations Universal Periodic Review urging the government to investigate all cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

Despite the administration’s attempt to change the perception toward President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs, the Philippine government still received a “failing grade” in the recently concluded UN Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights held in Geneva, Switzerland, a watchdog group said. Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra, who co-chaired the Philippine team with Senator Alan Cayetano, thanked the UN for identifying areas for human rights improvement.

“To the best of our ability we tried to explain the underlying reasons for this campaign. That is to protect the human rights of the majority of our people who stand to potentially suffer the dark consequences of unmitigated abuse of illegal drugs and to set an environment conducive to further social economic development,” Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra said. The Presidential Human Rights Committee would “review and determine what actions to take on your numerous recommendations,” he added. Next page

Pork scam revisit OK, says Abella

Duterte’s net worth up P3m in 6 months

By John Paolo Bencito THE Palace said Friday it was high time that officials involved in the massive looting of Priority Development Assistance Funds are held accountable and welcomed a Senate plan to conduct a new investigation into the revelations of alleged pork barrel queen Janet Lim Napoles, who has offered herself as a state witness. “The Filipino people deserve to know the truth in this case, not the slanted truth nor the doctored truth,” Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said,. “The President wants the truth to finally come out and to hold those involved, regardless of political color or party line, accountable,” he said. Before leaving for official visits abroad, Duterte said he believes that Napoles was a “minimal player” in the PDAF cases, and suggested in the past that there might have been higher officials involved in the scam. On Thursday, Senator Francis Escudero said he could seek a new inquiry into the PDAF scandal that erupted during the Aquino administration. Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II earlier said Napoles, who was recently acquitted by the Court of Appeals of serious illegal detention charges filed by her second cousin, Benhur Luy, was a key witness. Mindanao veteran new AFP chief By Florante S. Solmerin PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed the head of the Eastern Mindanao Command to replace outgoing Armed Forces Chief Eduardo Año, who had to retire early after Duterte tapped him to head the Interior department, reliable military sources told the Manila Standard on Friday. “Yes, Eastmincom chief Lieutenant General Rey Leonardo Guerrero is our next chief of staff,” said an Army lieutenant general who requested not to be named because he is not autho-

rized to speak on the matter. Guerrero is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1984, while Año is a member of the PMA Class of 1983. Another high-ranking military officer said Guerrero will assume his new post not later than the first week of June.
