help you. All you can contribute to society is P70 billion in taxes. We can live without it. “Better if I just listen to Gina. Let’s just look for the P70 billion from somewhere else and preserve our environment,” he added, scoring mining companies for failing to repair the damage that their operations have done to the environment. “How many years have you been there. Up to now, I cannot seen any greenery. What I want is that you put wood there and not just leave it like this. You just cannot say, let’s go to court, that’s legal. No, we are here. RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday rejected the advocacy of Environment Secretary Regina Lopez to rid the country of all mining but he also scored mining companies for not doing enough to repair the damage they have done to the environment. “Sabi ni ma’am, mine-free. Paano yan, ma’am [Ma’am said, mine-free. How can that be, ma’am], when there is a law? If there is a law about mining, then mining is allowed,” Duterte said during the launching
of a government television station in Baguio City. “The problem is, I saw the denuded mountains and there are still large holes because of open pit mining. If that is the case, I cannot
term in the altar of public interest,” Duterte said. Duterte made the remarks after the Commission on Appointments bypassed Lopez’s appointment ahead of a meeting on Tuesday when they can decide to reject her appointment amid the objections of 20 groups who claim Lopez lacks competence, imposes her personal biases and insists on rules that are not in the law. If Lopez is rejected by the CA on Tuesday, Duterte has said he is ready to make a new appointment but if they just bypass her, Duterte can again reappoint Lopez ad interim. Turn to A2

REDS ADMIT AMBUSH OF CRIME SCENE PROBERS THE communist New People’s Army admitted on Saturday they attacked a group of crime scene investigators who were responding to a shooting incident in Bansalan, Davao del Sur on March 8 but skirted President Rodrigo Duterte’s remark that it is pointless to talk peace with the insurgents. The NPA Southern Mindanao Operations Command said in a
statement the ambush was carried out “to exact revolutionary justice” against a certain Marlon Lomantas whom they claimed was a military informer in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, their spokesman Rigoberto Sanchez said. But Philippine National Police spokesperson said there was no Marlon Lomantas among the slain policemen, who were actually non-
combatant crime scene investigators who were out to investigate a shooting incident in Bansalan. “The trademark of ruthless treachery, patented by the [Communist Party of the Philippines]NPA, has reared its ugly head again in this latest attack against a nontactical police team of laboratory technicians and technical specialists,” Carlos said.
Carlos identified The fatalities as PO1 Rolly Benelayo, PO1 Joey Narvaza, PO1 Saro Mangotara, and PO3 Jayden May Rabor. He said Benelayo, Narvaza and Mangotara belonged to the Bansalan Municipal Police Station while Rabor was from the Scene of the Crime Operations of Digos City. and they are coordinating with the victim’s family “to gather more information about Potong.” With Potong’s abduction, the number of hostages in the hands of the Abu Sayyaf has increased to 32, including 26 foreigners. Meanwhile, the Defense department underscored the need to put up a permanent jungle base in the hinterlands of Jolo and Basilan to decimate the Abu Sayyaf and deny space for its future operations. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana conceived of deploying a full division of troops in Jolo to respond to civilian concerns over the threat of the ASG. Turn to A2
