CHEF’S CORNER: NIK SHARMA

Nik Sharma is a culinary powerhouse—multi-award-winning, James Beard finalist, and bestselling author of Season, The Flavor Equation, and Veg-table. Known for his irresistible fusion of food science and soul, Nik transforms every recipe into an unforgettable story.

We took some time out of Nik’s super busy schedule to chat with this amazing chef, award-winning author of Season, The Flavor Equation, and Veg-table, and a James Beard finalist whose work bridges food science and emotion like few others can. Here’s what he had to share with the readers of The Standard Magazine.

From molecular biologist to award winning chef, what sparked the transition from the lab to the kitchen? And what was the most challenging part of that career shift?

Curiosity. I’ve always been fascinated by transformation — how one thing becomes another. In the lab, I studied how molecules interact and change under specific conditions. In the kitchen, that transformation happens too, but you can taste it. Cooking became a way to apply the same curiosity to something deeply human and sensory. The most challenging part of the transition was giving myself permission to start over. Leaving a scientific career for a creative one meant redefining success and learning a new language — of flavor, texture, and emotion that I could build through my own lens bringing in that curiosity.

How has your scientific training influenced the way you approach recipe development and flavor creation?

Science trained me to observe carefully and test ideas systematically. I think in terms of variables — the behavior of individual ingredients, temperature, time, concentration, pH — and how they influence texture, aroma, and taste. That mindset helps me understand why a recipe works, not just how. When developing recipes, I look for the chemical logic behind every technique: how salt affects protein structure, how acids brighten vegetables, how sugar caramelizes and builds aroma. Once I understand that framework, I can experiment freely without losing balance.

COVER

You often describe taste as both a sense and a science. Can you share an example of how you balance these two aspects in your cooking.

For me, taste begins with data but ends with feeling. When I develop a dish like my tomato and tamarind stew, I start by thinking about the chemical components — acids, sugars, glutamates — and how they’ll interact. But once the cooking begins, it shifts to instinct and memory. But it’s still guided by science.

The scientific part explains the structure of flavor; the sensory part gives it soul. Balancing those two is like playing both composer and musician — understanding the notes but allowing emotion to lead the melody.

From Season to The Flavor Equation and Veg-table, your books explore food through both storytelling and experimentation. What inspires the themes behind your work?

Each book reflects a moment in my life and what I was trying to

understand about food at that time. Season was about identity — finding my voice as an immigrant and a cook. The Flavor Equation explored the science of why food tastes good, bridging my two worlds. Veg-table grew out of a desire to look closer at vegetables, to understand their biology and potential beyond side dishes.

The common thread is curiosity. I write about questions I’m still asking, and the themes emerge naturally from that exploration.

Your cookbooks don’t just teach recipes; they tell stories. How do you weave emotion and memory into something as technical as a recipe?

Recipes are emotional because food is emotional. A dish might start with a formula, but it becomes alive when memory enters the equation — the smell of my mother’s kitchen, a market in Bombay, or the first time I tried lemon myrtle in Australia. When I write, I treat each recipe as a story of transformation: ingredients coming together under heat and time, just as people and experiences do. The science explains the process, but the story explains why it matters.

You’ve been described as a “flavor architect.” What’s one experiment or ingredient that’s recently reignited your curiosity.

Recently, I’ve been fascinated by lactic acid fermentation of fruit, especially plums and tomatoes. It’s remarkable how lactic acid bacteria can transform their flavor and structure. With plums, fermentation softens their sharp acidity and brings out floral and honeyed notes. With tomatoes, the process rounds out their natural tang and deepens their umami character in a way that heat alone can’t achieve.

What intrigues me most is the versatility of what you get from the process. The fermented juices and pulp become separate ingredients in themselves — the liquid adds complexity to dressings, vinaigrettes, and marinades, while the pulp brings tang and body to sauces, chutneys, and even cocktails. It’s a reminder that fermentation isn’t just about preservation; it’s about expanding a fruit’s potential and discovering new ways to build layers of flavor.

You’re known for your innovative use of spices. What’s one

spice or flavor combination that continues to surprise or inspire you?

Coriander seed and saffron. They come from completely different flavor families — one citrusy and fresh, the other floral and metallic — but together they create a quiet tension that I find irresistible. I used that pairing recently in a chicken fricassée, where the coriander grounds the saffron’s intensity without dulling it.

Spices are like musical chords: the most interesting combinations are often the ones that shouldn’t work on paper but do in practice.

Your food blends cultures and influences. Is there a particular dish that feels like your personal “flavor equation”?

It would be something like my tamarind-glazed ribs with jaggery and chili — a dish that connects my Indian roots with the American barbecue traditions I fell in love with after moving here. It captures the intersection of sweet, sour, salt, and smoke, but also the intersection of memory and discovery.

COVER

For me, that’s the real flavor equation: the place where science, culture, and emotion meet on the same plate.

What are you looking forward most about attending the Palm Springs Food & Wine Fest and what can the attendees expect?

I’m really looking forward to connecting with people who are as passionate about flavor as I am. Food festivals are a chance to step out of the kitchen and have real conversations — to share ideas, taste together, and exchange experiences. Palm Springs has such an incredible creative energy. There’s something about the desert light and the pace there that makes food feel both luxurious and grounded at the same time. Attendees can expect a mix of science and story from me — a peek into how I think about building flavor, and why certain pairings work the way they do. I’ll be cooking, but I’ll also be explaining the “why” behind it, because understanding makes the experience more memorable. My hope is that everyone leaves not just with a good meal, but with a spark of curiosity they can take back to their own kitchens.

Thank you, Nik, for your time it certainly has been enlightening — a reminder that food is so much more than taste; it’s science, memory, and art all rolled together.

FEATURE THE ART OF WINE PAIRING: A BEGINNERS GUIDE

Wine pairing is often described as both a science and an art as well as a balance between flavor, aroma, and texture. The right pairing doesn’t just complement food; it enhances it, allowing both wine and food to express their fullest potential. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a curious beginner, understanding the fundamentals of wine pairing can open a new dimension of taste and enjoyment.

At its core, wine pairing is about balance. Wines can be light or full-bodied, acidic or sweet, fruity or tannic. Foods have their own range of flavors; salty, spicy, rich, or delicate. The goal is to ensure that neither the food nor the wine overwhelms the other. The classic guideline “white wine with fish, red wine with meat” still holds, but today’s culinary diversity encourages more creative combinations.

UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

Weight and Intensity

A wine’s body should match the weight of the food. Light dishes like grilled fish or salads pair beautifully with crisp whites such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Heavier meals like steak or lamb benefit from bold reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, or Malbec.

Acidity

Acidity in wine acts as a palate cleanser, cutting through richness and fat. That’s why acidic wines like Champagne or Chablis pair great with creamy dishes or fried foods. On the other hand, low-acid wines may taste dull alongside tangy or citrus-heavy meals.

Sweetness and Spice

Sweet wines balance spicy or salty foods. A Riesling or Gewürztraminer can calm the heat of Thai curry or Szechuan stir-fry while increasing the dish’s complex flavors. The key is to ensure the wine is slightly sweeter than the dish; otherwise, the wine may taste flat or bitter.

Tannins and Protein

Tannins, found in red wines, bind with proteins and fats, softening their perceived bitterness. This makes a well marbled steak and a

Modern Pairing Trends

Contemporary pairing moves beyond rigid rules. For example, rosé has become a versatile companion for a wide range of foods from seafood to charcuterie thanks to its balance of acidity, fruit, and subtle structure. Orange wines, made from white grapes fermented with their skins, offer intriguing pairings with earthy or umami-rich dishes like mushrooms or aged cheeses.

Vegetarian and vegan cuisine has also expanded the world of wine pairing. A lentil stew might sing alongside a rustic Côtes du Rhône, while a citrusy Sauvignon Blanc can elevate a spring vegetable risotto. Texture, spice, and preparation methods matter just as much as the ingredients themselves.

The Final Touch: Personal Preference

Ultimately, the best pairing is the one you enjoy most. Wine pairing should be a journey of exploration, not intimidation. Taste, experiment, and trust your palate. What matters most is discovering combinations that you enjoy. Whether that’s a crisp rosé on a summer evening with grilled vegetables or a rich Merlot with chocolate dessert. When done thoughtfully, wine pairing transforms dining into an experience, one where every sip and every bite tell a great story.

bold Cabernet Sauvignon an iconic match. The protein smooths the wine’s edges, while the tannins refresh the palate after each bite.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED

Consider: lost and found.

The first one is miserable – whatever you need or want is gone, maybe for good. The second one can be joyful, a celebration of great relief and a reminder to look in the same spot next time you need that which you first lost. Loss hurts. But as in the new novel, “Bog Queen” by Anna North, discovery isn’t always without pain.

He’d always stuck to the story.

In 1961, or so he claimed, Isabel Navarro argued with her husband, as they had many times. At one point, she stalked out. Done. Gone, but there was always doubt – and now it seemed he’d been lying for decades: when peat cutters discovered the body of a young woman near his home in northwest England, Navarro finally admitted that he’d killed Isabel and dumped her corpse into a bog. Officials prepared to charge him.But again, that doubt. The body, as forensic anthropologist Agnes Lundstrom discovered rather quickly, was not that of Isabel. This bog woman had nearly healed wounds, and her head showed old skull fractures. Her skin glowed yellow from decaying moss that her body had steeped in. No, the corpse in the bog was not from a half-century ago. She was roughly twothousand years old.

But who was the woman from the bog? Knowing more about her would’ve been a nice distraction for Agnes; she’d left America to move to England, left her father and a man she might’ve loved once, with the hope that her life could be different. She disliked solitude but she felt awkward around people, including the environmental activists, politicians, and others surrounding the discovery of the Iron Age corpse.

Was the woman beloved? Agnes could tell that she’d obviously been well cared-for, and relatively healthy despite the injuries she’d sustained. If there were any artifacts left in the bog, Agnes would have the answers she wanted. If only Isabel’s family, the activists, and authorities could come together and grant her more time…

Fortunately, that’s what you get inside “Bog Queen”: time, spanning from the Iron Age and the story of a young, inexperienced druid who’s hoping to forge ties with a southern kingdom; to 2018, the year in which the modern portion of this book is set.

Yes, you get both. Yes, you’ll devour them.

Taking parts of a true story, author Anna North spins a wonderful tale of druids, vengeful warriors, scheming kings, and a scientist who’s as much of a genius as she is a nerd. The tale of the two women swings back and forth between chapters and eras, mixed

with female strength and twenty-first century concerns. Even better, these perfectly mixed parts are occasionally joined by a third entity that adds a delicious note of darkness, as if whatever happens can be erased in a moment.

Nah, don’t even think about resisting.

If you’re a fan of feminist fiction, science, or novels featuring kings, druids, and Celtic history, don’t wait. “Bog Queen” is your book. Look. You’ll be glad you found it.

“Bog Queen” by Anna North c.2025, Bloomsbury $28.99. 288 pages

PROFILE MATHIAS BROE DIRECTS ‘SAUNA’ TRANS MAN AND A GAY MAN FIND LOVE IN STEAMY NEW FILM

Sauna is a bold and intimate reimagining of Romeo and Juliet that delves into themes of love, belonging, and identity within Copenhagen’s queer community. At its heart is the story of Johan, a gay man yearning for connection, and William, a trans man navigating the early stages of his transition. What begins as a Grindr hookup evolves into a profound bond that both heals and challenges them, set against the charged, transformative backdrop of a gay sauna.

“I had never seen a love story between a trans gay man and a cis gay man before,” says director Mathias Broe, who was eager to bring fresh perspectives to queer cinema. The film grapples with the universal questions faced by LGBTQ+ people, while also reflecting Broe’s own life—his real-life partner began transitioning during the making of the film.

We sat down with Mathias Broe in his Denmark home to learn more about the journey behind Sauna.

Sauna is your debut feature film, and it’s already groundbreaking as the first Danish film to cast a transgender actor in a leading trans role. What did it mean to you personally to be able to bring this kind of authentic representation to the screen?

MB: It means a lot to make space for the life of people that are close to my heart. It’s always surprised me how little representation queer people have in cinema history. It’s my ambition to present my friends and characters from my community to the big screen.

The film is adapted from Mads Ananda Lodahl’s book. What drew you to his story?

MB: I fell completely in love with the characters in the book as well as the portrait of underground Copenhagen that Lodahl depicts. As a queer man in Denmark, I related to it.

It tells the story of a gay cis man and a trans man who fall in love

SAUNA STILL 1 CREDIT CHRISTIAN
SAUNA STILL 4 CREDIT NICOLAI LOK

MB: At its heart, the film is about Johan and William’s plea to understand one another. In relationships, people often project their own ideas onto the person they love and it becomes about them and not the partner. Many of us lose ourselves in trying to please rather than actually seeing what’s needed. We need to learn to listen to the true needs and boundaries of our loved one. I’ve made that mistake.

You’ve shared that your own partner began transitioning while you were making Sauna. How did that experience influence your understanding of William and Johan’s love story?

MB: My partner and I used to do everything together. When she began her transition, suddenly there were spaces she didn’t feel comfortable coming to. There were also new ones that opened up to her, where I couldn’t join. It was a big change in our lives that seemed to blend in with the portrait of William and Johan.

What was it about Nina Rask that made you confident they were the right choice for the role of William?

MB: Nina really brought an undeniable charm and handsomeness that we needed for the role of William. William has his guard up to protect himself in the process of self- discovery, so

we needed an actor who could soften the character. Because Nina is a comedian as well, it contributed to a more accessible character.

Magnus Juhl Andersen stands out as Johan, and the chemistry between him and Nina is undeniable.

MB: When casting for Johan and William, first and foremost, we needed to believe their chemistry. When we paired Nina with Magnus, they felt like lovers and not brothers. Magnus has a vulnerability that makes the audience want to explore his intentions.

The gay sauna serves as both a place of intimacy and rejection in the film.

MB: The book’s writer, Mads Ananda Lodahl, used to work in a gay sauna, so the sauna comes from his life. As an arena, I felt like it was a very cinematic location, because it also works as a separatist and space that is hard to enter. It becomes a place of desire and a home for Johan. For William it’s an opportunity to explore his identity and sexuality, but it’s also a risky place where he’s put in a very vulnerable situation and this becomes a catalyst for understanding the core of the film.

The film doesn’t shy away from addressing transphobia and prejudice within the LGBTQ+ community itself.

MB: Isn’t it interesting how much transphobia and prejudice there is within the LGBTQ+ community? It’s very counter intuitive in

FEATURE SHOW UP FOR YOUTH IN RIVERSIDE COUNTY’S FOSTER CARE SYSTEM

Voices for Children, the nonprofit organization that provides youth in foster care with volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), is celebrating 10 years of service to Riverside County this year. The organization recruits, trains, and supports Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers who speak up for the needs and well-being of children in foster care in court, at school and in their community.

Since 2015, Voices for Children has served more than 1,700 Riverside County children in foster care by pairing them with more than 1,100 CASA volunteers. The organization has been nationally recognized for its inclusive practices and commitment to equity, including recognition from the HRC Foundation as an Innovative Tier Leader in Supporting LGBTQ+ youth and families. Perhaps you spotted them marching in the Palm Springs Pride Parade!

But the need is growing, and right now the organization is in urgent need of CASA volunteers to speak up for youth in foster care–and the need is particularly great for male volunteers. This year, more than 6,000 children in Riverside County are expected to spend time in the foster care system. Many of these youth have endured significant trauma in their lives. Studies have shown that LGBTQ+ youth are most often overrepresented in foster care and face additional challenges during a time filled with uncertainty and change. These young people need someone in their corner, and that someone can be you.

According to the HRC Foundation:

• At least 30% of youth in foster care identify as LGBTQ+.

• LGBTQ+ youth report more frequent placement disruptions.

• LGBTQ+ youth report a higher likelihood of being placed in group homes.

“If you’ve been wondering how to make a real difference in a young person’s life, becoming a CASA is one of the most impactful

ways to do it,” says Voices for Children’s President & CEO Jessica Muñoz, ESQ., MFS. “Our CASA volunteers are often the most consistent adults in a child’s life. They build trust, advocate for their needs, and help change the course of a child’s future.”

Once a child enters the foster care system, their world suddenly includes court hearings, social workers, attorneys, and often new homes and schools. Many feel very much alone, until they meet their CASA. A CASA often becomes the most consistent adult in a child’s life, providing stability when it is needed the most.

CASAs are vital sources of support for these children, who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. While social workers, attorneys, and judges strive to make the best decisions for children’s well-being while they are in foster care, they are tasked with meeting the needs of many families at once. CASAs meet an important need, offering oneon-one advocacy, monitoring the child’s circumstances, and making recommendations that help shape their future. CASA volunteers devote their attention to one child or sibling group at a time, advocating for them in court reports to ensure that any legal decisions meet the child’s needs.

Here are two stories of Riverside County volunteers who have become trusted mentors and advocates for local youth in foster care.

CASA Dana and Nick*

CASA Dana, who identifies as LGBTQ+, has advocated for his current case youth for the past two years. Nick* is a teen boy whose traumatic experiences have led to behavioral issues that impeded his ability to be placed in a foster home. However, Dana is a calm, consistent, caring presence in the boy’s life. Even though Nick has had challenging interactions with many other adults around him, he treats “Mr. Dana” with sincere respect when they are together at events, indicating that he trusts Dana more than other adults.

Dana is also Nick’s educational rights holder, which means he serves as a point person for all his educational needs. He attends every meeting with Nick’s school and teachers, either in person or virtually, to make sure that he has access to the resources and support necessary for academic success.

CASA Ron and Ryan*

At age 14, Riverside County teen Ryan experienced the passing of his adoptive father, leaving him without a stable home or guardian. He was moved around between relatives for some time, but experienced abuse and neglect in these homes on top of grieving his father. However, his life changed when he met his CASA Ron.

Ron visits Ryan twice a month, providing a steady listening ear, and advocating for him in court and at his school. Importantly, Ron led the charge for Ryan to live with a longtime family friend of his

father who was interested in adopting him, securing court orders to enable him to travel to spend time with them.

CASA Ron has also encouraged Ryan’s interests in advocacybased activities. One remarkable example is how CASA Ron helped Ryan prepare to deliver a formal speech advocating for the equitable treatment of LGBTQ students and other minority groups at his high school. This experience was a huge boost to Ryan’s self-confidence and enabled him to use his voice for change. Additionally, CASA Ron supported Ryan’s interest in joining Future Farmers of America (FFA), a program that has since empowered Ryan to become a sectional leader for the local FFA chapter—a major accomplishment that showcases Ryan’s potential.

*Names and identifying details have been changed to protect confidentiality

Want to get involved? Anyone can be a CASA, provided they are over the age of 21, have a valid driver’s license, meet the volunteer requirements and have a heart to serve youth in foster care.

Voices for Children is here to ensure all children in the foster care system are heard, supported, and seen for who they are. Whether you’re motivated by a desire to give back, a passion for advocacy, or a personal connection to the foster care experience, now is the time to step up. Visit www.speakupnow.org to learn more about Voices for Children, sign up for an information session about becoming a CASA volunteer and discover other ways to support.

This Year’s Spotlight: Lisa Middleton

In 2026, DAP Health will proudly honor Lisa Middleton, whose leadership has left an indelible mark on Palm Springs and beyond. From expanding affordable housing to advocating for seniors, veterans, and working families, she has led with both heart and resolve. Her recognition with the Community Service Award shines a light not just on her remarkable achievements, but on the values, she embodies: integrity, inclusivity, and the courage to lead authentically.

“Lisa Middleton has given so much of herself to this community, with heart, integrity, and a deep commitment to making Palm Springs a place where everyone belongs,” says DAP Health Board Vice Chair and Gala Chair Kevin Bass. “Honoring her is our way of expressing gratitude for the countless ways she’s lifted us all.”

A Legendary Soundtrack: The Temptations

Adding to the magic, The Temptations will headline this year’s gala. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winners of multiple Grammys, and the voices behind timeless hits like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” The Temptations are more than a musical act, they are living history. Their songs have defined generations, bridging divides and inspiring joy. For gala guests, the chance to sway to their soulful harmonies will be both a celebration of music and a reminder of the power of legacy, a perfect echo of The Chase’s enduring mission.

A Tradition of Compassion

Named in honor of Steve Chase, the world-renowned interior designer and philanthropist whose generosity helped DAP flourish in its earliest days, the gala has become one of the Coachella Valley’s signature events. It carries his legacy forward, inviting each new generation to join the cause and invest in a future where everyone can access high-quality, affirming care.

COCONUT GROVE CHRONICLES

One thousand, two hundred pounds and four legs.

Put that between your knees and you’ll find out what real horsepower is. You’re five feet off the ground, moving as fast as a car on a downtown street, hooves pounding as hard as your heart. Dangerous? Maybe. But as you’ll see in “Mounted” by Bitter Kalli, your ancestors did it and so can you.

When they were a young child, “around the age of six or seven,” someone gave Bitter Kalli a set of “pony books,” the kind that appeal to young girls, mostly white ones. Kalli wasn’t entirely comfortable identifying as a girl then but they adored the books, in part because the stories featured the kinds of friendships and acceptance Kalli wanted. After devouring those stories, they begged their parents for riding lessons from a nearby Brooklyn stable.

Fast forward to 2014, when Kalli was seventeen years old, an experienced equestrian, a trans individual, and a protester at college. During that protest, they watched the horses that carried the police, and wondered what those animals saw in the crowd.

For that matter, what did horses see throughout Black history?

In times of slavery, it was not uncommon for fleeing slaves to steal a horse or two to get away faster. Kalli shares heart-pounding tales of escape, sharing examples of how human chattel was often compared to that of equines in newspaper ads, as slaveholders mourned the latter loss much deeper than the former.

Many Americans are unaware of the rich contributions that African Americans made to the settling of the West. Kalli examines a popular movie, deconstructing it and adding real history to the Hollywood tale.

“What we know as the Wild West would not exist without the 182,000 enslaved people living in Texas in 1860…” they say.

Horses are featured in many of the world’s religions. Horsey language lends itself to the erotic. Even, says Kalli, “Black and brown youth in Brooklyn” understood the appeal of a good-looking Polo pony…

Take a good study of the cover of “Mounted.” Appreciate the artwork, notice the design. Then add this book to your “Things I

Horses have been hiding in plain sight in Black history for centuries, but author Bitter Kalli pulls them to the forefront, turning each facet of the subject over for deeper examination and additional thought. Happily, you won’t feel forced to do that; their writing comes across like an invitation to a warm, intimate conversation, the kind you get while casually hanging out with a new group of friends on the patio. What you learn is highly intriguing, and you won’t ever see horses in the same way again.

Beware that this book has one explicit chapter inside, but it fits the narrative and you won’t mind. You’ll be too busy enjoying what you read and wanting more. For horse lovers and history lovers alike, “Mounted” is the perfect ride.

“Mounted: On Horses, Blackness, and Liberation” by Bitter Kalli c.2025, Amistad $22.00 192 pages

DEZART PERFORMS ANNOUNCES ITS GRAND OPENING

Dezart Performs is proud to announce the grand opening of the new Dezart Playhouse at 605 South Riverside Drive, Palm Springs with West Side Story In Concert: A Gala Celebration featuring a live orchestra and vocal ensemble

November 13-15, 2025. Based on a conception of Jerome Robbins with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This special presentation will be directed by Dennis Courtney with musical direction by Stephen Hulsey, the team behind last season’s acclaimed Falsettos.

West Side Story In Concert: A Gala Celebration will spotlight the emotional depth and musical brilliance of Leonard Bernstein’s 1957 legendary score, celebrating both the production and the 1957 Chambers & Frey-designed church, now transformed into the new Dezart Playhouse. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set in the mid-1950s on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, then a multiracial, blue-collar neighborhood. The dark theme, sophisticated music, tragic love story and focus on social problems marked a turning point in musical theatre.

“The new Dezart Playhouse was envisioned as a home where artists and audiences gather to celebrate the power of live theatre. Launching this beautiful space with West Side Story In Concert, a work that pulses with music, passion, and community, feels like the perfect beginning to a bold new chapter.”

- Michael Shaw, Producing Artistic Director

TRIANGLE CARE MANAGEMENT (TCM)

The aging LGBTQ+ community seeking options for health care management now has a new free resource available – Triangle Care Management (TCM). This Coachella Valley-based nonprofit serves as a hub for culturally sensitive service referrals, connecting LGBTQ+ older adults and LGBTQ+ people with disabilities to affirming providers, services, and resources, helping them age with safety, dignity, and community. The organization is now taking new clients and offering free Care Management Navigation, which pairs a dedicated, oneon-one Care Manager Navigator to assess a client’s needs in a welcoming, affirming environment and educates clients on the full range of assistance available as aging or health needs change.

TCM addresses the isolation and unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ seniors. National and local studies have shown that elder LGBTQ+ community members are more likely to delay or not seek medical care as compared with their heterosexual, cisgender counterparts. They often experience higher rates of isolation, loneliness and depression because they fear discrimination from healthcare providers based on past negative experiences. As a result, these individuals often do not seek out help or care when it is needed.

Triangle Care Management was founded to give LGBTQ+ community members a safe place to call and help them learn about healthcare and resource options available. By not delaying care outcomes will improve ensuring that they may age with comfort, safety, and dignity. It provides a gateway of compassionate care and connects LGBTQ+ older adults and LGBTQ+ people with disabilities with affirming providers, services, and agencies, ensuring that its clients receive personalized guidance through care systems which may be overwhelming, and disconnecting them from one another.

“The rapidly growing LGBTQ+ community in the Coachella Valley requires life management services that often seem unaffordable or difficult to locate,” said Kelly Watson, President of Triangle Care Management. “We understand the complexities of trying to find care options that our aging community members require. That’s why we provide a personalized path for each client that includes detailed information and referrals to available LGBTQ+ affirming services.”

TCM’s Care Management Navigation is offered free of charge. The agencies to which clients are referred have their own fee structures. While it does not provide direct financial, legal or medical advice, clients are referred to local attorneys and Senior Advocates of the Desert which helps them qualify for state and federal programs. Its Embracing Aging Program forms networks for socialization, information and resources.

The first such community, Lesbians Embracing Aging, is already active and holding monthly meetings. TCM is a member of the MidValley Wellness Coalition at Cathedral City Senior Center.

“I was comfortably retired when my wife was diagnosed with ALS and was rapidly becoming paralyzed,” continued Watson. “I had no idea what I needed to do beyond her medical appointments, no idea who to call, or even what questions to ask. I really needed someone who I could trust to treat us equitably as a lesbian couple and direct me to available services.”

TCM plans to develop LGBTQ+ shared housing options, including clients sharing their existing homes and receiving donations of homes that will be developed into LGBTQ+ Shared Living spaces. Named in honor of founder Richard Bass, who recently passed away, TCM organized the Richard Bass Legacy Circle to raise funds and assets through legacy giving and develop LGBTQ+ housing as funds or property becomes available, hopefully in the next two to five years.

“Triangle Care Management would not be a reality without the incredible vision and support of our founder Richard Bass,” continued Watson. “Richard’s devotion to helping the aging LGBTQ+ community find culturally sensitive care and housing is core of our vision. We were devastated by his recent passing, and even more dedicated than ever to this vision shared by our entire Board.”

PERSPECTIVE ADVENTURES OF A DANCING QUEEN (CHAPTER TWO)

Last month I was sharing with you my Atlantis cruise adventure and was just about to tell you what happened to us in Istanbul. The first part of my story ended with my travel mate, Rick telling the very straight hotel proprietor, Pasha that we did not want to go to his friend’s straight club because Rick was gay! Here’s what went down next………

I will never forget the look on Pasha’s face. You could see his brain struggling with all the things he’d either heard or been taught about gay people over his lifetime competing with the reality of how much he liked and enjoyed his experience with Rick. Pasha quietly walked us back to hotel and left us to decide what to do.

We sat in our room for about 10 minutes contemplating our dilemma when Rick said, “Not one of the gay sites mentioned anything about dangerous neighborhoods or being treated badly, so I think we should go check it out for ourselves.” I agreed.

So off we went. As it turned out, our credit cards didn’t work for some unknown reason and the bouncer ended up letting us both in for free! Later that night when Sam ordered a bottle of champagne, we were served a small feast of food, nuts and chocolates usually reserved for VIP. In other words, we were treated like royalty making our decision to carry on, the right one.

We headed home about 5:00AM and found Pasha and his cousins, all who worked for him sitting outside eating, drinking, and smoking cigarettes and certainly talking about what had happened. I say that because as soon as I called out to him, the whole group turned around to stare, much like the cat who ate the canary!

I excitedly shared our tale of fun with Pasha, who interpreted the story to the others. I should also mention that as soon as Rick told Pasha that he was gay, Pasha turned all his attention towards me,

asking when I could come back to Istanbul!

The cousins asked if they could take pictures with us and did so. All in all, it was not only a great night, but I believe that some prejudices were challenged, and some learning took place. We all hugged each other goodbye and went up to our room for a few hours of sleep before we would have a quick breakfast and head to the Grand Bazaar before heading back to the ship.

We were up and out close to noon where we had our breakfast at Pasha’s coffee shop before grabbing an Uber to the Bazaar. About halfway there I started having a sinking feeling in my stomach but didn’t know why. Something was telling me to check the itinerary which I did only to find out that we were supposed to be back onboard at 1PM, not 2PM that we all believed we had seen.

It was now 1:17PM! I yelled to Sam to ask the driver to quickly turn the car around and drive us as fast as possible to the Port. He obliged and thought he was taking us to a short cut because from his perspective, the ship was parallel to the Uber. We dashed into and cleared the first port post but was told that we had to go to back to the main entrance of the port to get to our ship.

I hadn’t mentioned earlier that Rick was using a cane due to an ankle injury and was awaiting surgery after our return. For every one of my steps, Rick took 3 steps. With the new news, Sam suggested

that I run ahead to let the staff know that two more people were on their way. Combined with fear and uncertainty of making it on time, I was sporting a backpack with clothes, boots and cosmetics from the night before and most likely looked like a bunny rabbit hopping down the maze of paths I would need to take to get to the ship. By some stroke of luck, I finally rounded the corner and could at least see the staff at the far end of the port anxiously awaiting our arrival. I began shouting, “Please wait, the other two are on their way!” It was now 1:43PM and thank goodness, Rich Campbell, the owner of Atlantis who knows me well, shouted, “It’s ok Jill, we will wait for you!” I caught my breath and slowed down. I kept glancing over my shoulder to see if Sam and Rick were on their way. Close to 10 minutes later, they rounded the corner and made their way to the entrance and came aboard. At 1:56PM the three of us made our way to our rooms only to find out that two other sailors had never made it back! Rich waited until 2:30PM for them but to no avail. Kind of sad and scary if you ask me!

I was grateful to be onboard and did not make that mistake again!

XOXO,

Jill, your smarter and wiser, DQ

TIED IN A LEATHER BOE BOE JACK RYAN DOMINATES THE KINK SCENE

There were early signs that Boe Jack Ryan was destined for an adult career. “I’ve known I wanted to do porn since the fourth grade,” the Texas native admits. By his senior year of high school, he boldly stood up on the first day of class and declared his intention to become an adult film actor. After graduation, he waited a few years before making the move to New York City to chase his dream. Thirteen years later, Boe Jack has become a highly sought-after star. When he’s not in front of the camera, he can be found in the gym or jetting off to his next go-go dancing gig. More recently, he’s expanded into the kink world, appearing in films such as his latest, opposite fellow rising talent Logan Aarons. We sat down with Boe Jack to learn more.

What drew you to work with KinkMen.com?

Boe Jack Ryan: I’ve always loved the different explorations of sexuality on KinkMen.com. What drew me to film with them was being able to explore my own sexual desires in a safe and controlled environment.

Of the scenes you have shot with KinkMen.com, which have been your favorite?

BJR: I thoroughly enjoyed my first scene. Everybody on set made sure that I was comfortable and everything was done within my boundaries as well as my scene partner’s boundaries. As far as shooting, it went very smoothly. I often look back at that first scene and smile because it was such a great experience.

How much of the on-screen leather identity that you portray on KinkMen.com mirrors your real-life relationship with kink?

BJR: I try not to do anything on camera that I don’t do in my personal life. Anything and everything you see me in is authentically me. I feel like it is kind of hard to fake some of the stuff that we get into once we cross the kink threshold. Authentic screams of joyous pain sound much different than when you’re putting on an act. It’s the same with what I wear. Anything I’ve worn on screen, leather wise, I have also worn in my personal life.

What do you like about leather?

BJR: Leather, for me, triggers a different persona. It incites this bad ass inside of me. The feeling of leather across my skin builds me up to the point where I know I’m the baddest mother*cker in the room.

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about leather culture and its role in porn?

BJR: I think many people believe that leather culture is something that only our dad’s and granddad’s took part in. Leather is for everyone! The first time you put on your full leather gear, stretch your stuff outside, feeling all sexy; at that moment, you will understand that leather is timeless.

Are you noticing leather as a growing trend in the gay community?

BJR: Yes, we’re seeing a lot more leather lately. Several clubs that I gogo dance at have started to have leather nights. There are more leather parties popping up here and there, and there’s definitely a lot more leather being done in the amateur film scene. I feel like there’s a new generation of younger people getting into leather, which means there is soon to be a big revival.

Looking ahead, how do you see the future of leather and kink in the adult industry, and where do you hope to take your career within that space?

BJR: I definitely see leather growing in the industry. I hope to see more conventions, meet ups, and leather nights at local bars, and clubs, all across the country.

Some say kink content is becoming too “mainstream”. Do you see that as a positive expansion of visibility or as a risk of losing authenticity?

BJR: I think it could be a positive thing. There’s nothing saying that you can’t keep your authenticity while still appealing to the masses. In my opinion, going mainstream just means that there’s more visibility and more people learning about the different kinks that they didn’t know they were into.

MUSTSEE QUEER SUPERNATURAL ROMANCE WITCHY WAYS CASTS A SPELL ON AUDIENCES THIS FALL

FilmMcQueen and writer/director Jane Clark (Crazy Bitches, Meth Head) unveil Witchy Ways, a supernatural romance that blends humor, love, and magic. Redefining the witch genre through a queer, contemporary lens, the film celebrates the belief that real magic lives in authenticity and love.

Distributed by Wolfe Video, Witchy Ways is now available to buy or rent on Apple TV (US), Fandango at Home (US), and Amazon Prime Video (US, UK, Australia). The film is also available on Apple TV in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, and Switzerland.

Written and directed by Jane Clark, Witchy Ways continues her tradition of bold, emotionally resonant storytelling that bridges genre and identity. Her previous works—including the cult favorite Crazy Bitches and the acclaimed Elena Undone—have established her as a distinctive voice in queer and independent cinema.

Synopsis:

Eve (Diora Baird) is a high-powered brand manager who retreats to her late mother’s cottage, a place long rumored to be magical. There, she meets Danni (Marem Hassler), an enchanting neighbor who comes from a long line of witches. What begins as a reluctant friendship deepens into a romantic connection that challenges Eve’s sense of logic and control. When Danni’s home and legacy are threatened by a vengeful neighbor, Eve must decide whether to remain grounded in the world she knows—or step fully into one of magic, love, and possibility.

The film features an acclaimed ensemble cast including Diora Baird (Wedding Crashers, Cobra Kai, You’re Not Supposed to Be Here), Marem Hassler (Riley Parra, Bone Tomahawk), Candis Cayne (Dirty Sexy Money, The Magicians), Guinevere Turner (American Psycho), David Fumero (One Life to Live, Starz’s P.O.W.E.R.), Marc Price (Family Ties, Trick or Treat), and Paul Fox (Ford v Ferrari). Cayne, the first transgender actress to secure a recurring role on primetime television, adds depth and distinction to a cast that seamlessly combines star power with authenticity.

The idea for Witchy Ways emerged from Jane Clark’s longstanding friendship with Marem Hassler. The two had been eager to collaborate, and when the opportunity arose, Clark began shaping a story that would intertwine witchcraft, humor, and queer romance. Influenced by A Discovery of Witches and the tone and sisterhood of Practical Magic, Clark set out to create a film that honors both

supernatural storytelling and emotional truth.

While researching modern witchcraft, Clark discovered a real and vibrant community that has often been misunderstood or marginalized. This realization became central to the film’s emotional core, aligning the experiences of modern witches with those of queer people seeking acceptance and belonging.

MUSTSEE

Interestingly, the film’s casting evolved organically. Hassler was initially set to play Eve, but after a change in the cast, Clark recognized that the role of Danni had been written with Hassler in mind all along. Diora Baird then stepped into the role of Eve, bringing charm, depth, and humor to the character and completing the film’s magnetic on-screen pairing.

With renewed interest in stories of sisterhood, empowerment, and self-discovery, Witchy Ways offers a modern interpretation of witchcraft—portraying witches not as fantasy figures, but as symbols of strength, identity, and spiritual freedom.

The film draws powerful parallels between modern witchcraft and the LGBTQ+ experience, reflecting shared journeys toward visibility, acceptance, and authenticity. Blending supernatural romance with a deeply human story of self-discovery, Witchy Ways

celebrates the courage to live one’s truth and the magic that comes from being fully seen.

FilmMcQueen is dedicated to spotlighting queer characters through bold, genre-driven storytelling. In that spirit, Witchy Ways is more than a supernatural tale—it’s both a love story and a reclamation. The film stands as an affirmation of queer resilience, connection, and the transformative power of believing in oneself and in love.

Now available through Wolfe Video on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Fandango at Home.
