COVER MODERNISM WEEK TO HOST 2026 WORLD MONUMENTS FUND / KNOLL MODERNISM PRIZE CEREMONY

Modernism Week is honored to host the prestigious 2026 World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize Ceremony on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Annenberg Theater in the Palm Springs Art Museum. World Monuments Fund (WMF) is the leading independent organization dedicated to safeguarding the world’s most significant cultural heritage sites through conservation, advocacy, and community-based preservation efforts worldwide. The ceremony will be a significant highlight of Modernism Week’s February festival, taking place February 12 - 22, 2026. The biennial World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize honors the individuals and organizations that preserve modern-built heritage through pioneering architectural and design solutions. This is the first time that this prestigious award ceremony will be held outside of New York City, and the first time Modernism Week has been selected to host an internationally acclaimed award ceremony. The ceremony will include a panel discussion with the award recipient and acclaimed architectural experts. Tickets for the award ceremony and all other Modernism Week events are on sale at modernismweek. com. The World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize is made possible, in part, by support from Knoll. Knoll brings order and beauty to workplace, hospitality, and residential environments.

Founded in New York City in 1938, the furniture and interiors brand is known for design collaborations with the architects, artists, and designers who shape our cultural zeitgeist. With a relational approach that considers color, material, finish, and form, Knoll allows architects and designers to deliver a complete experience of space. Knoll is a globally recognized leader in modern design and the founding sponsor of the World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize.

This year’s World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize has been awarded to Architectus for its conservation of the United

Nations’ Historic Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a landmark of African modernism and a site of profound cultural and diplomatic significance. Designed by Italian architect Arturo Mezzedimi and completed in 1961, Africa Hall has long served as a center for Pan African dialogue, including the founding of the Organization of African Unity. Architectus’s decade-long restoration reinstated the building’s architectural clarity, artistic elements, and civic role, balancing rigorous research into the original design with the needs of a contemporary international institution. In addition, the jury introduced a new Stewardship Award for Modernist Homes, recognizing exemplary long-term care of modern residential architecture. The inaugural Stewardship Award recognizes Anne and Robert Essner for their restoration of the Umbrella House in Sarasota, Florida.

“We are deeply honored that World Monuments Fund and Knoll chose to hold this internationally revered prize ceremony during Modernism Week,” said William Kopelk, Modernism Week Board Chairman. “Honoring and preserving endangered architecture is one of Modernism Week’s core missions, so we are thrilled to offer the opportunity to hold this important ceremony during our festival.”

“Modern architecture captures some of the most ambitious ideas of the twentieth century, but its innovations also render these buildings vulnerable to the passage of time,” said Bénédicte de Montlaur, President and CEO of World Monuments Fund. “Our Modernism Program and the World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize were created to bring attention to these challenges and highlight exemplary preservation efforts around the world. The renewal of Africa Hall by Architectus embodies this mission, honoring the original architect’s vision while ensuring the building can continue to serve as a vital place for cultural exchange and African unity.”

The prestigious World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize recognizes contemporary architects and preservationists whose work demonstrates innovative, replicable approaches to conserving modernist architecture around the world. Established in 2008 through a partnership between World Monuments Fund and Knoll, this biennial prize champions the idea that modern buildings are vital touchstones of our shared twentieth-century legacy by recognizing outstanding conservation projects at Modernist buildings undertaken within the previous decade. Prize-winning projects honor the vision of the original structure while improving the site’s environmental and economic sustainability as well as community benefit.

This year, World Monuments Fund received a record 73 submissions for the award, spanning residential and private homes to religious and cultural centers. The geographic spread of nominations was also the largest it has ever been, with submissions from 30 countries.

Once considered the vanguard of architecture, many modernist buildings of the twentieth century now face deterioration, neglect, and public apathy. Too often, these structures are “too young” to qualify for landmark protection, and their experimental materials and designs require bold and inventive approaches to preservation.

BOOK REVIEW

ALWAYS OVERBOOKED

Not too bright.

That’s what people once thought about you. Your language didn’t conform, you had your own sense of style, and you were ignorant about modern things and places and foods. But you were no dummy. You were different, and you had a secret: as in the new biography, “Ain’t Nobody’s Fool: The Life and Times of Dolly Parton” by Martha Ackmann, you knew exactly where you were going.

When Avie Lee Owens and Lee Parton first married, they had the very basics: “two knives, two forks, two spoons, a skillet, a butcher knife, and an old iron kettle.” He was seventeen; she was fifteen. Babies came quick. The fourth one was named Dolly, after two great-aunts.

Almost from the time she could walk, Dolly sang. Before she was old enough to attend school, she wrote poetry, and she’d begun to notice rhythms and beats she could make with her fingers. As a schoolchild, she created her own musical instruments out of scraps, and she was eager to perform whenever anyone asked her – and they asked often, because Dolly Parton was a nice girl, and her sense of humor conveyed a warmth that drew people in.

Growing up in the Tennessee mountains, Parton was independent, shunning marriage and child-raising, instead focusing on a dream of being a star. By the time she was in high school, she’d had a regular gig on local television, but she recognized that there were few opportunities for fame in the mountains, so she left for Nashville the day after high school graduation, with the snickers of naysayers ringing in her ears.

She stayed with an aunt and uncle there, and she beat the streets, dined on grocery store samples to get by, and missed her family and friends. And they worried about her, but they knew nothing would derail her plans. They knew Dolly would be fine.

As a friend said, “’She had her head on pretty good.’”

Chances are that if you’ve listened to music any time in the last sixty years, you’ve heard Dolly Parton through her words or her music or both. Now you need to learn more about her, and

“Ain’t Nobody’s Fool” is where to do it. Here’s a biography that grabs you on the first page with the tiniest bit of family tree, but not so much that you get bored with it. Author Martha Ackmann writes

about Dolly Parton’s early life, putting hardships and experiences in context, both personally and historically. There are name-drops, but not overly so, as Ackmann takes you through Parton’s career, her heartbreaks, her marriage, and her years with Porter Wagoner, in detail but not dramatically embellished or outrageously told. It’s a biography that’s just right, sourced well and written with a fresh take that, like its subject, tells a good story.

Fans, of course, will want this highly researched book but music lovers of any age or type will eat it up. “Ain’t Nobody’s Fool” just shines.

“Ain’t Nobody’s Fool: The Life and Times of Dolly Parton” by Martha Ackmann c.2026, St. Martin’s Press / $30.00/ 304 pages

FEATURE A VERY QUEER HISTORY OF VALENTINE’S DAY: CHAOS, CONFUSION, AND CHOSEN LOVE

Valentine’s Day today is a glittery mix of romance, awkward expectations, and marketing emails begging you to buy something red. But before it became a holiday that assumes everyone has a straight partner, a joint bank account, and opinions about rose bouquets, Valentine’s Day was already deeply chaotic, confusing, and unintentionally queer-coded. In other words: it fits right in.

Let’s rewind to the origins of Valentine’s Day, when love was messy, rules were arbitrary, and nobody could quite agree what the holiday was actually about. Honestly? Iconic.

Ancient Rome: No Labels, Just Vibes (and Goats)

The earliest ancestor of Valentine’s Day is Lupercalia; an ancient Roman festival held in mid-February. It was meant to promote fertility, purification, and general good luck but in practice, it looked like something halfway between a pagan rave and a very questionable wellness retreat.

Priests sacrificed goats (and sometimes dogs), smeared the blood around, and ran through the streets lightly whipping people with strips

of animal hide. This was supposed to bless women with fertility.

Yes, this holiday started with public nudity, animal sacrifice, and ritualized touching by strangers. If you’re thinking, this would absolutely be banned on modern dating apps, you’re correct.

Ancient Rome, however, had a far more flexible understanding of love, sex, and relationships than many societies that followed. Same-sex relationships weren’t categorized by identity labels the way we use them now. Desire was desire. Power dynamics were complicated. But the idea that love had to fit into one rigid box? Not really a thing yet.

In short, Valentine’s Day started in a world that was already queerer than most greeting cards.

Christianity Enters, Brings Rules (But Make It Romantic)

As Christianity spread, Church leaders took one look at Lupercalia and said, “We cannot let the gays, or anyone have this much fun.” The festival was officially outlawed in the late 5th century.

Instead of erasing it entirely, the Church replaced it with St. Valentine’s Day, which is where things get deliciously confusing.

There were multiple St. Valentines. Like, several. Historians are still arguing about which one this holiday honors, or if it’s a mash-up of all of them. Very queer of history to be vague about identity, honestly.

One popular legend claims Valentine was a priest who secretly married couples against the orders of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor believed single men made better soldiers, so Valentine said, “Actually, love matters,” and performed weddings anyway. That’s not just romantic that’s resistance.

Another legend says Valentine fell in love with or at least deeply cared for the jailer’s daughter while imprisoned and sent her a letter signed “From your Valentine” before his execution. Forbidden love. Secret relationships. Emotional letters. Tragic ending.

If this were a queer indie film, it would win awards.

Medieval Era: Love Becomes Dramatic (and Exhausting)

For a while, Valentine’s Day stayed relatively low-key. Then medieval poets showed up and said, “What if love… but painfully?”

Writers like Geoffrey Chaucer popularized the idea that February 14 was when birds chose their mates, which led humans to decide they should also declare undying devotion at this exact moment or spiral emotionally.

This era gave us courtly love: longing glances, unrequited feelings, and dramatic poems written by people who desperately needed therapy. Love became less about practicality and more about yearning. Queer readers may recognize this vibe immediately.

Because for many LGBTQ people throughout history, love was longing. It was coded language, secret notes, and feelings that couldn’t always be openly expressed. Valentine’s Day, even then, was about desire that existed despite social rules.

Capitalism: The Real Villain

Fast-forward to the 18th and 19th centuries, when massproduced Valentine’s cards hit the scene. Suddenly, love could be purchased in bulk.

This is where Valentine’s Day took a hard turn toward heteronormativity. Cards assumed a man and a woman. Ads pushed marriage, babies, and lifelong monogamy. Cupid went from mischievous god to unsettling baby with a weapon. Queer people were largely erased from the narrative, even though the holiday itself was built on rebellion, secrecy, and emotional defiance.

Rude.

Modern Valentine’s Day: Reclaimed, Rewritten, Reimagined

Today, LGBTQ people have been joyfully reclaiming Valentine’s Day in ways that make way more sense. Galentine’s. Palentine’s. Self-Valentine’s. Polyamorous Valentine’s. “I love my friends, my cat, and my community” Valentine’s.

Because queer love has always expanded the definition of what counts.

The truth is, Valentine’s Day has never been about one narrow version of romance. It’s been reinvented over and over by pagans, saints, poets, rebels, and corporations. Each generation reshaped it to reflect their idea of love.

So why shouldn’t queer people do the same?

This holiday was born from chaos, survived through resistance, and thrived because humans refuse to stop loving in ways that scare authority. That’s not just Valentine’s Day history that’s queer history.

So, whether you’re celebrating with a partner, a situationship, a group chat, or a box of chocolate you fully intend not to share, remember: Valentine’s Day has always belonged to the misfits.

TRENDS PERFECT 10

MOUNDERWEAR, the boundary-pushing men’s underwear and lifestyle brand founded by designer and creative force On Mekahel, is officially celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2026. Marking a decade of redefining confidence, comfort, and modern masculinity, the brand is rolling out a year-long slate of new collections, campaigns, and cultural moments beginning with the launch of its newest initiative, the “Why You So Hot” campaign.

Since its inception, MOUNDERWEAR has stood for more than just underwear. Under the creative direction of On Mekahel - an artist, performer, and fashion entrepreneur known for blending style, selfexpression, and inclusivity - the brand has carved out a distinctive voice in the menswear space. MOUNDERWEAR has consistently championed the idea that sexiness starts with authenticity, not perfection, and that confidence comes from feeling comfortable in your own skin.

TRENDS

To kick off its milestone year, MOUNDERWEAR has launched The Standard Issue Collection, a refined take on everyday essentials. Designed as the ultimate daily uniform, the collection features traditional cotton boxer briefs in both short and long lengths. Thoughtfully constructed for comfort, structure, and ease, The Standard Issue Collection delivers a reliable, flattering fit in a range of classic neutrals and bold colorways, making it the foundation of the modern MOUNDERWEAR wardrobe.

As the anniversary year unfolds, the brand is also introducing Valentine’s Day–focused campaigns and editorial shoots, spotlighting select red and white styles across multiple collections. Designed with gifting in mind, these pieces are positioned as standout options for Valentine’s Day gift guides and seasonal fashion features, reinforcing MOUNDERWEAR’s ability to balance everyday wearability with elevated, sensual appeal.

Beyond product, MOUNDERWEAR continues to expand its cultural footprint through its growing “Why You So Hot” movement. What started as a playful phrase On Mekahel would casually say to guys at parties quickly took on a life of its own. After printing the phrase on a baseball hat, the reaction was immediate. People began

repeating it, sharing it online, and adopting it as a personal mantra.

At its core, “Why You So Hot” is about redefining what it truly means to be “hot.” “It’s not about body type, age, looks, or chasing unrealistic ideals,” says On Mekahel. “It’s about confidence, authenticity, and owning who you are. Anyone can be hot when they feel comfortable being themselves.” It is that philosophy that sits at the heart of everything MOUNDERWEAR creates.

“As we celebrate 10 years, we’re honoring the journey while pushing forward,” Mekahel continues. “Why You So Hot” isn’t just a slogan. It’s a feeling, a mindset, and a movement.”

Looking ahead, MOUNDERWEAR promises more collaborations, campaigns, and surprises throughout 2026 as it continues to blur the lines between fashion, culture, and self-expression. After a decade of growth, the message is clear: MOUNDERWEAR isn’t just celebrating where it’s been. It’s setting the standard for what’s next.

DAPHEALTH

THE ANNUAL SILENT AUCTION AT THE CHASE IS ALWAYS WIN-WIN-WIN

Those who donate auction items get invaluable exposure, winning bidders get great deals, and DAP Health gets additional funds to fuel its mission.

I’m addicted to silent auctions. Over the last 25 years, I’ve attended dozens of glamorous benefit soirées in New York City, Los Angeles, and Palm Springs, where I’ve placed winning bids on my fair share of amazing items — from a 15-night Hawaiian cruise and high-end designer duds to original works by celebrity artist Rosie O’Donnell and the late French painter Jean Dewasne — all for little more than a song.

What’s not to love about silent auctions? They’re win-win-win. Those who gift items can do charitable work while receiving massive exposure, lucky victors score treasures at a fraction of their worth (while enjoying the added perk of engaging in a little good-natured competition), and the hosting nonprofit adds dollar signs to its bottom line. With such categories as art, travel, food and drink, theatrical and musical experiences, fashion and jewelry, and furniture and home décor represented, there’s enough to whet every appetite.

One of the best silent auctions in the desert is arguably the one that precedes the official program at DAP Health’s annual fundraising gala The Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, where attendees can browse and bid during the cocktail hour, then pick up their winnings at the end of the night.

For the last three years, The Chase’s silent auction has been cochaired by Palm Springs resident and DAP Health volunteer Grant Elder, who for 2026 shares the honors with 2025 Chase honoree and fellow volunteer Lynn Hammond. Their work begins as early as the previous summer to get everything ready for the February affair. They solicit new and returning donors; collect, catalog, and photograph each gift; and set opening bids according to actual value.

“It’s a profound honor to co-chair The Chase auction, a cornerstone of our community’s generosity,” says Hammond. “While we spend months cataloging these incredible items, the true leadership belongs to the donors and local businesses who step up year after year. For me, the ‘win-win-win’ isn’t just about the auction floor — it’s about the humbling realization that every bid placed directly translates into health care, housing, and hope for the thousands of neighbors DAP Health serves.”

“People love DAP Health, they love The Chase, and they love to participate,” adds Elder, who also serves as co-chair (with Read Brown) of DAP Health’s major donor program Partners for Life, of which he is a member. “Pricing items is such an important component in the success of silent auctions. The goal is to get as many bidders interested in each item, so pricing things too high can either result in just one bid — or in the item not selling at all. There’s a bit of a science to it.”

This year, every one of the more than 200 items on the auction block will be revealed online on February 13, with the majority having a “buy it now” option for anyone who needs to take something they just must have off the table. On February 19, online bidding will close, unsold items will be brought to the Palm Springs Convention Center to be elegantly displayed in the lobby (with their highest bid as of the close of the online auction placed at the top of their bid sheet), and — once attendees arrive at the event on February 21 — the frenzy will resume until the silent auction closes midway through the evening, when winners will be revealed.

“My philosophy is to try to get the most unique donation and finding the right audience for it,” continues Elder, adding that while it’s always exciting to land items from new donors, he has a special fondness for those who choose to contribute each year. Some of the returning benefactors for 2026 include restaurateur Willie Rhine of both Willie’s Modern Fare in Rancho Mirage and Eight4Nine

Restaurant & Lounge in Palm Springs, Shonda Chase and her Palm Springs medical spa Revive Wellness Centers, and Palm Springs fashion retailer and designer Wil Stiles.

Having donated in 2025, Southern California-based queer figurative and landscape painter Kory Alexander — whose deep affection for the Coachella Valley is often reflected in his oil or acrylic tableaux depicting the pools, palms, and men of the desert — is also back for 2026.

“I respect and admire DAP Health and the work it does so much,” says Alexander, 33, who’s currently represented by Wallspace Gallery in Los Angeles. “It’s very important to me to support our community any way I can, so it’s more than my pleasure to do my small part and contribute to the party. My donation this year — ‘The Last Two at the Party’ — was inspired by trips I’ve taken to Palm Springs, which is a city I adore. It’s exciting that someone who is as passionate about the painting as I was in creating it will get to take it home with them and enjoy it for years to come.”

KORY ALEXANDER’S 2026 DONATION, “THE LAST TWO AT THE PARTY,” A 30 X 40 IN. OIL ON CANVAS CREATED IN 2025 WHOSE STATED VALUE IS $2,500.

DAPHEALTH

Just a few other 2026 highlights include two separate sets of VIP tickets to see Barry Manilow in Las Vegas (including postshow meet-and-greets), five nights in a luxurious oceanfront suite at Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth, and an original piece by legendary Hollywood celebrity photographer (and longtime Palm Springs resident) Michael Childers.

Elder prides himself on the prestige of the offerings. “We try not to have any item whose starting bid is lower than $200,” he says, adding that more than $200,000 was raised during 2025’s silent auction. To ensure the assortment is as perfect as possible, he solicits donations year-round. “Whether I’m on vacation or just around town in my everyday life, I’m always on the lookout. Most of the time I strike out, but now and then I manage to get something amazing. I’d love to get a donated car one of these days. I think it would look so cool among all the other great items.”

To purchase tickets to The Chase, or to visit the online silent auction between February 13 and 19, please visit daphealth.org/ thechase.

OUR VOICES OUR STORIES: CELEBRATING BLACK AUTHORS

The Palm Springs Public Library, Brothers of the Desert and Mizell Center have teamed up once again to present the second annual “Our Voices Our Stories: Celebrating Black Authors” a FREE community event in celebration of Black History Month on Sunday, February 8th from 10 AM – 1:00 PM.

This event will begin with a welcome reception featuring a variety of bagels and spreads, coffee, and mimosas from 1010:30 AM. The Best Bookstore in Palm Springs will be on hand with select books from our featured authors, available for purchase. At 10:30 AM the event will begin with our first featured author former NFL Player RK Russell in conversation with Lorenzo Taylor. They will be discussing Russell’s Memoir “The Yards Between Us”, an exploration of his journey as he shattered barriers and made history by becoming the first out active NFL player to identify as bisexual. On a day that is dedicated to the ultimate face-off in football, the Superbowl, Russell will talk about his career as a formidable defensive end when he played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he faced off against Hall of Famers and the fiercest competitors with unmatched skill and determination. With the mainstream popularity of the HBOMax series “Heated Rivalry” that has seemed to have resonated with audiences who aren’t part of the LGBTQ community, transcending the stereotypes about pro athletes and the gay community, Russell will share his own story and let you decide.

Following RK Russell our second featured author will be Toni Ann Johnson in conversation with Marilyn F. Solomon. They will discuss her soon to be released book “But Where’s Home?” (to be released February 10, 2026) which is a Novella and linked short story collection that lays bare the realities of Black life in America, challenging readers to confront issues of racism, classism, colonized

thinking, narcissism, abuse, and parent-child relationships. Johnson’s complex and interwoven characters create a kaleidoscope of truths about human nature and the complicated relationship the United States has with race. They will touch on her career as a screenwriter, playwright and author of other books including “Light Skin Gone to Waste”, “Homecoming”, and “Remedy for a Broken Angel”.

Attendees will have their final opportunity to purchase books and have them autographed by our authors. The event will conclude at 1:00 PM.

The event is FREE to attend, but we’re asking you to please register online as seating is limited to 100 attendees. Reserved seats will be released five minutes before the events starts to allow for standby attendees to attend. Register at: http://bit.ly/4sDg3Ft

PERSPECTIVE POSITIVE OUTLOOK?

As you know, Valentines Day, President’s Day weekend, Modernism Week and International Bear Convergence are upon us this month, so get ready to be enchanted. Or should I say that is my hope for you.

I mentioned in last months article that I was entering this New Year feeling hopeful and excited and as crazy as this might sound, I still feel that way, in lieu of everything that is going on around us. I am well aware of the craziness that is surrounding us and have chosen to continue to let my light shine through the darkness and continue to believe that we need to stick close together.

It has been quite awhile that we the citizens of this nation have come together to let a leader know exactly how we feel about the way the administration is doing its job. Late 1960s–early 1970s (Vietnam + Nixon) is the closest parallel to what’s happening today.

There were massive protests and a loss of trust in the government and Nixon, who was thought to be by many as authoritarian where others believed he was the only thing holding the country together. People genuinely felt the country might come apart. Sound familiar? We are split again, and it is wreaking havoc on our daily lives. I’m sure that many people back then, genuinely felt the country might come apart. Sound familiar? I certainly wonder!

On a personal level, it has made me so much more grateful to be living in both California and Palm Springs. I happened to listen to Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos and was blown away by his solid, rational spot-on words that held no anger, attitude, defensiveness, vitriol or swearing. I am sorry to say that I wish we were so lucky to have someone that solid to lead us.

But we do not.

I am attempting to be as strong as possible right now and like many others am using the New Year to better myself. I am back on a strict eating plan, have cut out alcohol, have upped my cardio and workouts and am boycotting as many of the companies who will only appreciate us when their bottom line goes upside down.

For those of you who might have made New Year’s resolution, I’m wondering how well you are sticking to your guns? We live in a resort town where parties and night live are prominent, and all involve eating and drinking lots of high calorie foods, making it much harder to tow the line.

One trick I have learned is to make sure that I eat a wellbalanced meal before I go out, especially when it comes to barhopping. It is much harder to get inebriated with food in one’s stomach and unbelievably still allows one to feel happy! These days, as an old pot smoker, who now has mild emphysema and has chosen to no longer smoke anything, I use dark chocolate edibles. They are the most reliable and the 5mg of cannabis keeps my mood happy, and my feet moving, ticking all the boxes. They are also very low

calorie in comparison to a calorie-dense cocktail.

And as soon as the weather decides that it is truly late winter/ early spring, I will be walking much more than driving, allowing me to be outside rather than in the gym, where I work 5 days a week, 7:30AM to 5PM, typically back and forth 3 times a day. It’s time for me to get this winter white off my body and getting some good Vitamin D naturally from the sun, sounds delicious right now!

As a quick footnote, our local walker, often referred to as Tan Jesus or Walking Jesus, Ricardo Marano, was killed while walking early in the morning a few weeks ago. He classically wore very little clothing, and it was not reflective, and I fear was invisible to the Hit and Run driver who struck him down, so please be careful and smart.

I mention all these ideas as ways for you to disengage from the madness/sadness while making you the Best Version of yourself. We must stay strong and healthy because we don’t know what is in store for us. However, with health on our side and our hearts aligned, we can and will forge ahead, together.

XOXO,

Jill, your back in the saddle, DQ!
