BOOK REVIEW
ALWAYS OVERBOOKED
BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Your Head Was Always Meant For a Tiara.
Or a crown, maybe both. Elegant clothing was supposed to fill your ample closets and you were meant to have a maid or valet to help you dress. And yeah, glass slippers should be on your feet right now. Then again, being royalty can have its drawbacks: as you’ll see in “Dianaworld: An Obsession” by Edward White, it can be a royal pain.
Even as a child, young Diana Spencer was proud of her heritage. By the time she was born, White says, “her family [was] a mighty social presence” in Great Britain, with many ties to the Royal Family. Little Diana often played with the Princes Edward and Andrew, and she supposedly met Prince Charles when she was just five years old and he was seventeen.
That age difference meant much less when the Prince was searching for a bride and Diana flirted with him at a “shooting weekend” event. Soon, they were engaged, though they only “spent time together... a handful of times” and the marriage was broken before it scarcely began. You probably know how it ended, and how her life ended, too. And yet, nearly twenty-eight years after her death, Diana continues to fascinate people.
Says White, the frenzy over royal-watching compounded when it appeared that the “world’s most eligible bachelor” had found his princess, and the paparazzi were relentless. Every outfit Diana wore was scrutinized, condemned, and mimicked; she was criticized for being candid, and for being overly-drama. She seemed to think that “part of her solemn duty was to appear as the Princess of Wales as often as possible” but she also apparently disliked what happened when she did. She shook up the Royal Family’s status quo by refusing to participate in stiff-upper-lip-ness or emotional distance, and that touched the hearts of many.
Here we are, a generation removed from August 31, 1997, and there is still only one Diana for a lot of people. Those are the readers for whom “Dianaworld: An Obsession” seems to have been written, and you can think about this book in two basic parts.
Author Edward White takes a deeper-than-usual look at Princess Diana’s life, mostly as a Royal, but you’ll also read about her before and her after. Alas, those who arose in the dark to watch her wedding in 1981, or who cried when she died won’t find much new. Heavy sigh.
What you will find, however, is a subtle new attitude about Diana, as seen through a backward lens. Gone is the gushing, in favor of facts. There’s snark here, and some degree of gossip but it feels fresh, maybe because the blast of Diana books has been a trickle in the last decade. We’re not inundated with Diana, so this book feels right, right now.
Despite that, forever fans of the Princess will get the most out of it. And if that’s you, well, you know the assignment. “Dianaworld: An Obsession” is a book to wrap your fingers and your head around.

PROFILE DEVON MICHAEL SEDRICK BREAKS FREE IN DEBUT ALBUM FIFTY ONE FIFTY
BY BRIAN HUG
This month, out singer-songwriter Devon Michael Sedrick unveils his highly anticipated debut album, Fifty One Fifty, a raw and fearless journey written and produced entirely by Sedrick himself. Blending rock, R&B, and global percussive influences, the record takes its name from California’s “5150” code, the statute that authorizes a 72-hour psychiatric hold for individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others. True to its title, Fifty One Fifty dives unflinchingly into the darker corners of the human psyche (rage, shame, dishonesty, and self-hate) before emerging into a place of self-acceptance, empowerment, and love. The out singer confronts his
rage and finds redemption through music
Speaking from his sailboat home in Marina del Rey, Sedrick shares the personal revelations that shaped the album.
The album title, Fifty One Fifty, is such a powerful metaphor. Can you talk more about what it meant for you to “fifty-one-fifty” yourself and how that turning point shaped the music?
Devon Michael Sedrick: “Fifty One Fiftying” myself was pretty much putting myself in time out. We’re all human, but I had been
engaging in some behavior that was hurting others and myself emotionally, and I was finally ready to put an end to it, and really face myself. The entire album is me giving myself the ability to speak and tell the truth. It was an opportunity to let all of the sides of myself speak, the angry parts, the sad parts, the crazy parts. They all needed a chance to be heard.
You grew up in a loud, mixed-race Mormon household as the eldest of six. How did that environment of chaos, music, and faith shape both your struggles and your artistry?
DMS: I think the context of the music is so much about my struggle with myself. It’s about me finding a way to accept and value all the parts of myself. There is a very strict way of being in the Mormon church that didn’t really fit with my human experience. I am thankful for my upbringing and having to fight for my identity, because it really helped me know myself on a deep and unshakeable level,
and it also ended up giving me a fun, dark, spicy edge that I think comes out in all of my art.
How do those pivotal experiences echo throughout the songs on Fifty One Fifty?
DMS: The single, ‘Excited,’ is about my coming out as gay. When I was a kid I used to stay up all night praying and praying that I wouldn’t be gay anymore, and every day I would wake up still gay. I thought I was doing it wrong, and part of me actually thought that I might just be inherently evil or bad. The song ‘Excited’ is kind of a naughty wink at that. Maybe other people do perceive me as “evil”, but maybe you should come along and see how fun, inspiring, sensational and lovely this “evil” life can be. There’s definitely easter eggs of this theme throughout the entire album especially in ‘Fifty One Fifty’, ‘Skin n’ Bones’, ‘Mean’ and ‘Delicious’.
PROFILE
Your breakout single “You Suck” is cathartic but also playful. Was it important to you to balance the heavy themes of rage, shame, and self-hate with humor and lightness?
DMS: Life can feel so heavy sometimes, and it is heavy, but the more humor that we can insert into our lives, the easier it is to deal with. We’re all just human and we need to cut each other and ourselves some slack. We have to laugh about everything and not take things too seriously. Plus, humor can be such an antidote to shame. There’s an acceptance of reality in humor, and I think acceptance is really what we need in order to grow and evolve.
Which track feels most personal to you?
DMS: That’s such a hard question! I think all of the songs are really personal, because they are all different aspects of myself. If I had to pick right now, I would say ‘Skin n Bones’, because that song is really about accepting myself no matter what anyone else thinks. It’s about taking ownership of my body and my choices and living fully with the limited time that we have. It’s our throne, our skin n’ bones, so sit inside of yourself and start acting like the ruler of your life that you are.
You’ve said that water is your creative sanctuary, that you sing your best ideas while surfing. How does living on a sailboat in Marina del Rey influence your songwriting and sound?
DMS: I have a tendency to be a little anxious sometimes, so anywhere that I can slow down and feel safe really helps amp up my creativity. I feel like I usually write from a place of discomfort, but the actual music making takes place when I feel comfortable and centered. Plus making music while the sunsets in my boat is such a vibe, there’s no place I’d rather be, except for being on tour and playing for a bunch of people.
You’re preparing to take Fifty One Fifty on your first solo tour. What do you hope audiences take away from experiencing these songs live?
DMS: I want people to have fun. I want people to witness my acceptance of myself, and I hope that it gives someone permission to accept themselves. I absolutely love performing and I am so excited about the musicians that I’m bringing along with me. I can’t wait to feel connected, expressive and totally out of my mind.

DAPHEALTH DAP HEALTH PARTNERS WITH INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
BY DANIEL VAILLANCOURT
In an innovative step forward for health care education and community medicine, DAP Health has joined forces with Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC) in Palm Springs to support and participate in a new internal medicine residency program that began July 1. The collaboration with Desert Regional Medical Center will hopefully help retain these newly minted providers in the desert, putting an end to the long-term shortage.
This academic collaboration takes shape at DAP Health’s Centro Medico Cathedral City (CMCC) and is designed to train and inspire the next generation of primary care physicians — many of whom will hopefully choose to stay and establish practices in the desert.
“Part of the mission of our new internal medicine residency program is to help address the primary care physician shortage in the Coachella Valley,” says DRMC Internal Medicine Residency Program Director Dr. Joel Trambley. “We wanted our residents to have a positive primary care experience, see a wide variety of patients, and start engaging with the community. I felt that DAP Health was an ideal partner to meet those goals.”
DRMC, part of Tenet Health, is no newcomer to graduate medical education. Since launching its residency training programs in 2014, it has offered instruction in family medicine, general surgery, transitional year, emergency medicine, surgical critical care, and ultrasound.
DRMC has collaborated with other medical establishments, but this new internal medicine program is unique in that DAP Health is the first community health center to fully host a continuity clinic experience with DRMC.
A boon for DAP Health
For DAP Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Aquilina, the collaboration is a natural evolution of the organization’s longstanding
commitment to medical education and holistic care. “We’ve had nurse practitioner students and infectious disease fellows rotate through before,” he says, “but we haven’t done residency training since absorbing the Borrego Health system in August of 2023. This was the right time and opportunity.”
The collaboration brings many rewards. For residents, DAP Health offers the kind of patient diversity and integrated care model that deepens learning. For DAP Health, it enhances clinician satisfaction, promotes evidence-based teaching, and allows physicians to model and pass on the organization’s values of inclusive, culturally competent, team-based care.
“It helps with retention because lot of physicians are happier at work when academic training is included in their job description,” offers Aquilina. “Teaching residents also keeps us sharper in our own clinical skills. And residents get to see what makes DAP Health special. It becomes a two-way interview process — by the time they graduate, we know who’s a good fit, and they know if they want to stay with us.”
“The benefits of this residency program are mutually advantageous,” says CMCC board-certified internal medicine physician Dr. Victoria Malkhasyan, the program’s chief preceptor. “The residents benefit from gaining real-world experience, and DAP Health benefits from shaping the next generation of great physicians. I enjoy teaching tremendously, and I hope that by working alongside us at Centro Medico Cathedral City, some of our residents will choose to remain with us in the Coachella Valley.”
The program at a glance
The internal medicine residency program will grow to include 18 residents across three years of training, with six new first-year residents (PGY-1s) and two second-year residents (PGY-2s) already onboard. Each resident will maintain their own patient panel,
ensuring the kind of longitudinal care that is a hallmark of excellent training and patient continuity.
Two to three residents will rotate at Centro Medico Cathedral City on any given day in this first year, with shifts changing every two weeks. By year three, up to six residents will be working steadily. Every patient encounter will be initially supervised by Malkhasyan. DAP Health is actively recruiting a second internal medicine physician to join the team.
“Preceptors are involved in all the care, they’re aware of everything, they sign all the notes,” says Aquilina. “The goal is to have the residents work increasingly independently over the three years so that by the time they graduate, they are truly ready to fully function as attendings and independent clinicians elsewhere.”
What it means for patients
For patients receiving care at CMCC, this exciting new alliance may mean being seen by a resident physician. “They are not students — they are doctors,” maintains Aquilina. “They’ve graduated medical school. Their badges may say ‘internal medicine resident,’ but they’re completing their training, not beginning it.”
Patients will always be informed when they’re scheduled with a resident and will have the opportunity to ask questions or request clarification.

physicians who may one day work right here in our community, or elsewhere in the country or throughout the world.”
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to grow alongside a team that’s committed to delivering thoughtful, patient-centered care,” adds PGY-2 resident Dr. Rayan Harb. “Every day brings new opportunities to collaborate, improve, and make a lasting impact on the diverse communities we serve.”
Why Centro Medico Cathedral City?
“There are a lot of space and resource requirements for hosting residents,” reveals Trambley. “The Cathedral City location met those needs and provides the patient variety we were hoping for.”
The collaboration is designed to be long-term and may expand in the future. “We hope it lasts for many, many years,” says Aquilina. “If it goes well, we would love to extend it to subspecialty rotations in infectious disease, HIV specialty, sports medicine, women’s health, and primary care.”
“We look forward to accessing the learning experiences at other DAP Health sites and clinics as the collaboration grows,” echoes Trambley.
“For both institutions, the message is clear,” concludes Aquilina. “Training tomorrow’s primary care providers starts now — and it’s happening in the heart of Cathedral City at DAP Health thanks to our invaluable relationship with Desert Regional.”

PALM SPRINGS PRIDE MOVES FORWARD WITH 2025 FESTIVAL DESPITE SPONSORSHIP SHORTFALL
The Greater Palm Springs Pride organization announced today that, despite a significant shortfall of $325,000 in expected funding, the annual Palm Springs Pride celebration will proceed as scheduled. Organizers are committed to delivering the vibrant and impactful event the community has come to expect, despite the funding challenges.
The organization believes the shortfall is a direct result of the current political climate, which has led to a decrease in sponsorships. However, Palm Springs Pride remains driven by its mission of honoring the LGBTQ+ community’s struggle for equality and celebrating its rich history, diversity, and future. Organizers are honoring the struggle and creating a path forward just as members of the LGBTQ+ community have done since the 1969 Stonewall Uprising.
The four-day celebration will remain free to attend and is expected to attract over 200,000 people to the Palm Springs area, generating an estimated $35 million in economic impact. With the funding shortfall, attendees can expect adjustments to the festival format. However, planning is underway to ensure the festival and parade remain as meaningful as ever. The commitment to a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees remains a top priority.
“The long struggle for LGBTQ+ rights is knocking at our door
again,” said Ron deHarte, President of Palm Springs Pride. “It is vital that we stand together and show the world that our community is strong and our fight for equality continues. This is our moment to create our path forward and fight for equality.”
The community’s support is now more crucial than ever to help ensure this year’s event is as meaningful as ever. Contributions will directly support our efforts and send a powerful message that our community will not be deterred. Tax-deductible donations can be made online at Pspride.org or by participating in the Equality Walk, presented by Silvercrest, at www.pspride.org/walk.
The Pride Landmark Flagpole and the LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Sculpture are long-planned projects that are not affected by the recent political climate.
“We’re doubling down on what makes Palm Springs Pride so special. We’re a friendly, welcoming, and diverse city. Our Pride is celebratory and political, and we will not be quiet,” deHarte added. “The community will not shy away from addressing today’s social justice challenges.”
Those who want to support the festival can make a contribution online or participate in events like the Equality Walk, though attendance remains free to all. www.pspride.org

PERSPECTIVE TIME TO RE-ENERGIZE
BY JILL LANGHAM
Can’t believe it’s that time of year already! I have been away from Palm Springs quite a few times this summer and look forward to a great season. At the beginning of last month, I returned to Fire Island for my 3rd Pines Party called Dreamscape, which didn’t disappoint on any level. Seriously, the degree to which the geniuses who put these shows on is nothing but first rate. I thought I was in 2050!
I found myself feeling very challenged by the theme and came up with 7 possible outfits which I allowed to drive me crazy up til the very last moment when I combined 3
of the 7 choices and put them all together, which I was told turned quite a few heads ( I know, such big problems! ) It was great fun and seeing the sun come up with my closet chosen family members made it even more special! As if that wasn’t enough, I left 10 days later for Greece and my 16th Atlantis cruise, this time heading for the Greek Isles, Turkey and Egypt, if you can believe. This was my 70th birthday gift to myself. My travel buddy and longtime bestie, Sameer along with bestie Rick, joined me on this 10-day Mediterranean Holiday.
For years, I’d been watching tons of Turkish and Egyptian series about the
people and lifestyles of these two ancient countries which helped me be prepared for my travels. It was a trip of a lifetime.
I met so many wonderful, new friends and got re-acquainted with many long-time buds. It always makes me laugh when upon boarding the ship, the guys are very suspicious of me and aren’t very forth-coming but after they figure out my energy and intent, become so loving, welcoming and inclusive! It’s a real thrill for me to say the least!
Along the way, I noticed that my energy levels dropped significantly and suddenly
my natural joy was wavering, too. I couldn’t make heads or tails out of it until it dawned on me that I was experiencing a delayed, grief response to Glenn’s death.
Over the last 90 days since his untimely passing, I’d been flitting about much like a dragonfly going from trip to trip, celebrating a milestone birthday and participating in his huge celebration of life but hadn’t really allowed myself to feel his loss and grieve.
I felt detached and empty and had little to no desire to mix and mingle with my friends and community. After a few weeks
of not comprehending what was happening, I connected with my feelings just in time for my big trip to Greece, which allowed me to once again shine.
As always, I’m grateful to all of you who might have noticed my lack of warmth during those times and ask for your understanding.
Be well and hope you are still enjoying Labor Day festivities.
XOXO,
Jill, your Up, Up and Away, DQ
HEALTHWATCH AFTER PRIDE: MPOX STILL DESERVES ATTENTION
BY SCOTT BERTANI
Mpox hasn’t gone away — and neither has our need to care. Pride Month may be behind us, but summer events aren’t slowing down quite yet. With Labor Day right around the corner — signaling the unofficial end of summer — it ushers in another last-minute round of travel, connection, and reasons to stay tuned-in to our bodies and our health. And this moment, nestled between big gatherings and late-summer plans, is as good a time as any to talk about mpox, not just as statistics or case counts, but as something real and lived.
Mpox still matters to the wellness of the LGBTQ+ community. Talking about it — even when headlines aren’t — with friends, partners, or providers helps us stay safer and more connected to what matters in our health; just like we are in other parts of LGBTQ+ care and prevention. Because real care doesn’t start with a prescription or a shot. And mpox isn’t just a medical concern. Health starts with how we talk and how we listen. Open, judgment-free conversations make it easier for people to speak up,
share what they’re feeling, and work through it with their partners. That kind of care builds trust and keeps us better connected.
That’s important because mpox is still here. Mpox, or what was formerly known as monkeypox, is a contagious virus that spreads through close personal contact, including sex. Though it’s not classified as a sexually transmitted infection, the patterns are clear:
When bodies collide — especially in ways that involve prolonged skin-to-skin exposure and mpox is present — transmission can happen. Many people report their first symptoms showing up at sites of sexual contact.
Mpox cases have primarily been seen among sexual and social networks of Gay, Bisexual, and Same-Gender-Loving men, as well as Transgender and Nonbinary individuals — especially those with uncontrolled HIV. It has also affected caregivers and women. Nearly all cases involve Clade II, the less severe strain still circulating in the U.S.. A very few cases of Clade I — a more serious strain — were identified in late 2024 and early 2025 in people who had recently traveled outside the U.S. No signs of wider spread have followed.
Because early framing of the virus relied on language and imagery that fueled stigma — particularly toward African nations and then LGBTQ+ people — the name change to “mpox” was a deliberate step to correct potential and unnecessary associations. Mpox doesn’t respect borders or identities, but our response can. And it should be rooted in truth, not stigma.
Here in the Coachella Valley, the absence of local case reporting doesn’t mean mpox is behind us. The virus still moves along the same circuits of celebration, travel, and touch that flow through the nightlife and queer community spaces that draw visitors yearround — including in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, and Desert Hot Springs. And as visitors continue flowing in from other cities and surrounding communities — including Los Angeles, where 69 mpox cases have been reported since February — the risk here remains real. But local providers like DAP Health remain a presence, continuing to offer vaccines, testing, and care.
Vaccination remains one of the most effective tools we have. It not only helps lower the chance of infection but may also help reduce symptoms if someone does get mpox. The JYNNEOS vaccine is a two-dose series — and that second dose matters. It’s ideally given at least 28 days after the first, but even if more time has passed, you can always go back and get it.
There are many other ways we can all unite our health this late summer and early fall by looking out for ourselves and each other. If you or a partner notices a new or unexplained rash, or just aren’t feeling quite right, it’s okay to skip a beat and reach out to a provider or someone you trust. And make sure to pay attention to symptoms like painful sores, flu-like symptoms, or pain or discomfort when going to the bathroom. If something feels off, don’t wait; reach out. As summer
winds down, keep celebrating — and stay connected to your body and your people. With lots more gatherings and holidays up ahead, it’s a great time to continue leading with care and community.
