We’re getting ready for quite possibly our most jampacked autumn season yet here at The Spring! We’ll be visited by some famous faces including Wet Wet Wet star Graeme Clark and historian David Starkey, as well as an autobiography of Jane Eyre and a fantastic drag king personification of Joan of Arc! As well as lots of live events, films and workshops for you to enjoy, our autumn programme includes some more unusual acts, with mind-reading from Luke Jermay, a murder in our museum for the next Beyond the Stage event, and an evening of entertainment that is all about alcohol (and includes free drinks)! Lastly but definitely not least, is our very exciting programme of Christmas events. We’re really excited for you to see everything that we’ve got planned, with three fantastic family shows throughout the festive season – a bite-size ballet adaptation of The Nutcracker, musical extravaganza Santa in Love, and a stand-off between winter and spring with interactive show The Snow Play. Not forgetting the adults, there is the hilarious office Christmas party Tis the Season and a brilliant Michael Bublé tribute on 30 December to get you ready for the New Year’s celebrations in style! Looking forward to seeing you soon, The Spring Team

TIS THE SEASON Tis the season to be jolly…unless you’re sat at table 9 of the WTF Supplies Christmas party…! A year has passed trying to avoid these people and yet Gail from HR has sat them all together again. Will Sarah be sneaking in her flask of who knows what!? Will Gary insist on showing his card tricks? Will Craig manage not to say all the wrong things to Claire? Tonight we follow several employees at their annual Christmas party and although at first it seems the staff lead very separate lives, it would appear they share the same intentions. Could it be the office manager job that hasn’t been filled? Could it be the person they’ve been dying to ask out? Could it be the mystery of the missing bagel?! Combine this with a free bar, and what could possibly go wrong.... Tis the Season is a hilarious play that shines the light on the awkward and embarrassing moments mixed in with the politics that we all experience as employees at the one and only dreaded office Christmas party! Plus, we’ll have the chance to get to know the characters for ourselves (and maybe find out some of the office gossip) with a special pre-show experience in the foyer! STEPHEN K AMOS BREAD AND CIRCUSES

Brexit. Trump. No more Mary Berry on the Great British Bake Off. Things are looking bleak, so wouldn’t it be better to just forget all about it? Comic maestro Stephen K Amos might not be able to provide bread to the hungry masses, but no one else is going to put on a better circus. Leave your problems behind for the evening – and who knows – maybe the world will seem just a little bit brighter! When Ancient Rome needed to distract itself from politics, a few solutions were suggested, but none hit the spot quite like the simple idea of giving the people cheap food and plentiful entertainment – ‘panem et circenses’ or ‘bread and circuses’. Our circuses might no longer involve gladiator fights to the death, but the same principle applies. Modern politics is a confusing mess, so no one can blame you for giving it a miss in favour of a night of laughs this festive season. Recommended for ages 16+ Tickets: £17, £16 concessions

A JAZZ CHRISTMAS CAROL The Alan Barnes Octet

A Jazz Christmas Carol will take you through the characters and scenes of the Dickensian classic, with scenes from the original Dickens story read aloud and then brought to life by eight virtuoso musicians – a switch from hilarity to pathos that would have done credit to Dickens himself! A different musician, from Scrooge as a gruff baritone sax to Marley’s Ghost personified in a swinging trombone, portrays each character in this festive celebration of literature and jazz. Like the classic story itself, this night has something for everyone, whether you love Dickens, music, literature, or just Christmas! Tickets: £14, £12.60 concessions

LOST IN TIME

THE WORK OF LAWRENCE GLEADLE Upper Mezzanine Gallery

Lost in Time is an exhibition of 1930’s billboard advertisements by lithographic artist Lawrence Gleadle, which have been remastered with the help of local artist Kendal James. Lawrence Gleadle worked at Stafford and Co. printers in Nottingham. He started a five year apprenticeship as an artist in 1923 at the age of 15, and went on to become the ‘Big Head Man’. He would draw the portraits of the film stars or advertising characters and the background design for film and advertising posters. By the 1930s Stafford was the largest poster printers in England. Lawrence kept samples of his work, including complete posters. When he left the company during the second world war, his work was bagged up and lost for nearly 80 years, until his son Goff discovered them and brought them back into the light. A companion exhibition is being held at Art Space Portsmouth from 11 – 22 October
