We have a jam-packed autumn season – in fact, it’s so busy that we had to add some extra pages to the brochure! This season sees the introduction of The Tasting Gallery, a series of events run by our café bar, and the launch of our evening menu; see the next page for the delicious options that you will be able to enjoy before the start of our evening events. We’re also excited to introduce Event Cinema this season, allowing you to experience spectacular London productions right in front of you on the big screen. We’re kicking off with The Royal Ballet’s Christmas classic, The Nutcracker, direct from the Royal Opera House. Our Beyond the Walls libraries tour is heading out across the Borough with a pirate-themed family show this year. We’re also celebrating the Havant-based manufacturer Kenwood with a unique 1960’s themed day in September, and in October we will be holding a symposium of performances, films and discussion about life for women and girls in the twenty-first century. For the festive season, the hilarious Living Spit will be returning with another cracker of a show – this time they will be presenting their unique take on the nativity! We’ve also got the incredible Showaddywaddy here to get the party started, and we are rounding off the season with a magical adaptation of Hansel and Gretel that will be perfect for the whole family to enjoy. A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad) is a hilarious cabaret musical about depression that explains, sings and throws glitter about how it’s OK not to be OK. It’s joyful, buoyant, gleeful, slightly silly, sugar-coated, unrelenting and completely super happy! (Except for all the bits about depression). NOT ABOUT HEROES by Stephen MacDonald Followed by a post-show chat

Not About Heroes is the extraordinary story of two First World War poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. Based on their real-life relationship, this moving play tells the story of the poets’ meeting in Craiglockhart Hospital in 1917 and their ensuing friendship based on their love of poetry and hatred of the conflict that brought them together. This award-winning story is coming to The Spring as part of a world tour that began in 2017 to commemorate the centenary of both the meeting depicted in the play and of the armistice.

“Recreates the Great War as tangibly as if the theatre had filled with the smoke and stench of the battlefield. Compelling and superbly performed.”

YOUNG HERBERT’S HORRORS LIBRARY TOUR Presented by Half Moon

We’re setting sail to travel across the seas (well…across Havant Borough at least…) this autumn to bring you another fantastic family show. This year’s tale is about wannabe pirate Young Herbert. So, get your swashbuckling boots on and head down to a library near you to hear about his antics. Young Herbert is a little horror. Living on a boat should be the ideal life for a wannabe pirate, but the boat’s grounded until Herbert can learn to tidy his cabin, eat his greens and be more polite. A big storm brews up when Herbert is sent home from school and Mum calls on Great Uncle Albatross to warn him of the dangers of rebellion. But who is Great Uncle Albatross and do his cautionary tales really have the power to make Young Herbert behave? Or will they just give Young Herbert the horrors? Featuring swashbuckling verse, jaunty music, gallows humour and the obligatory parrot, Young Herbert’s Horrors is Justin Coe’s brand new spoken word show for children. Recommended for ages 4 – 9 Pay what you decide: Book your tickets in advance, for no up-front cost, and then decide what you think the show is worth after you’ve seen it. Young Herbert’s Horrors is part of The Spring’s Beyond the Walls programme, that sees us take arts events and activities to audiences across the borough.

A rare and compelling story. The discussion will be led by Caroline Hammond.

THE BLACK CAT

Followed by a post-show chat

Thursday 11 October, 7.30pm Tickets £12.50, £11.50 concessions

A renegade retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s twisted tale. Two performers dismember the process of adaptation by reimagining a macabre classic with the cheekiest of glints in their eyes. An enigmatic writer has adapted Poe’s original story and handed scripts over to two performers who are now taking merciless liberties with the words – like a madman taking out a furious rage on a helpless pet. Balanced between the hilarious and the horrific, this show revels in the darkness that hides just under the surface. The Black Cat is gravely good fun, but be warned: it will get catty. Meow.

PAUL FOOT

IMAGE CONSCIOUS

That animal is absolutely ridiculous. What about the many, MANY problems that occur when organising a suburban orgy? The catering, for example. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, which incidentally is a terrible type of lettuce.” Paul Foot With his quirky comedy and cult following, we are delighted that Paul Foot is returning to The Spring. He is a BBC New Comedy Award and Daily Telegraph Open Mic winner and his recent television and radio appearances include The Infinite Monkey Cage (BBC Radio 4), Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC2) and Would I Lie To You (BBC1).

Blues, Ragtime, Hot Jazz, songs and dances from long ago

Saturday 3 November, 8pm Tickets £12.50, £11.50 concessions

Working backwards from the 1930s, the FB Pocket Orchestra explores repertoire that formed the embryo of what is now known as popular music. The members originally began playing together to explore heritage music and became an official project in 2012, with a debut album released in October of that year. Since then they have performed regularly across the region. They come to The Spring with their ever popular contemporary slant on popular acoustic music from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, transporting you to a time when life was much simpler! The FB Pocket Orchestra will be holding free open rehearsals in The Spring’s café on Monday 8, 15, 22 and 29 October from 12noon – 1pm. Everyone is welcome to come along to listen.

“Atmospheric, yet vibrant, this charming collection of songs will make you wish you had been born some 100 years ago. The style, glamour and ‘fabulousness’ of this era is captured beautifully on the album” Claire Anderson Jazz FM

The naval timber scarcity in the reign of George III Talk by Gale Gould In the Langstone Room

Thursday 8 November, 7.45pm Tickets £6.50

During the eighteenth century there was a belief that Britain was suffering `a great Scarcity of Timber’ and more particularly `that Sort of which our ships are constructed’. This led to proposals for parts of the New Forest to be enclosed and the remainder to be ‘disposed of by public sale’. But was this modern history’s first instance of `fake news’? This illustrated talk by Gale Gould from the University of Southampton reveals how close the New Forest came to being lost to future generations.

Never fully satisfied, many of Degas’ drawings and sculptures were kept in private during his lifetime but now, through close examination, they can be seen as some of the most beautifully detailed and expressive works in the modern era. Using written accounts by friends and commentators, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late nineteenth century and serves as an exploration of the complex workings of Degas’ artistic mind. “Art is not a matter of what you see, but what you make other people see.” Edgar Degas Directed by David Bickerstaff 85 MINUTES

HAVANT’S NURSERY RHYME TILES This autumn Havant’s unique nursery rhyme tiles, originally designed for the children’s ward at the local War Memorial Hospital, are reunited for a special exhibition. The hand painted tiles date from 1935 when Royal Doulton artist William Rowe created the panels, each made from 24 individual ceramic tiles, to cheer up the walls of the children’s ward. In 2011 the Havant War Memorial Hospital closed and tiles were removed. Thanks to the support of the local community the panels were restored and are now saved for future generations to enjoy. The Spring is usually home to three of the ten original tiles, but this autumn we’re delighted to welcome the whole collection back for a special exhibition five years after they were last exhibited together.
