Hello and welcome to The Spring in our 10th anniversary year! Throughout 2019 we will be celebrating with a range of special events to mark our 10th birthday as The Spring. In the ten years since we opened as an integrated arts and heritage centre we have witnessed some incredible performances, enjoyed some beautiful films and uncovered some remarkable heritage stories. Since 2009 we have been extremely lucky to have been supported by some wonderful friends, funders, partner groups, staff and volunteers and we send them all a huge thank you. But most importantly it’s our audiences and participants who make us who we are and give us the impetus to keep growing and developing and we hope you’re happy with the way we are looking after your venue.

OPENING HOURS Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm and into the evening on event nights Saturdays, 10am – 4pm On Saturday evenings we open one hour before the start of an event, with the bar opening 45 minutes beforehand (or one hour before when food has been booked in advance). Please note, we re-open to the public after New Year on Wednesday 9 January 2019.

Our Spring 2019 season is busier than ever. Thanks to all of you who donated to last year’s Piano Appeal we’ve been able to programme some fantastic music of all varieties and can’t wait to hear artists put the new instrument through its paces. We are delighted to be launching a busy Event Cinema season with screenings of live events from the Royal Opera House and the National Theatre. I am excited about our theatre programme and especially delighted to have Wot? No Fish!! returning to our stage, and our biggest ever Family Festival with a space and astronaut training theme. We hope we are living up to our mission of being “a small place where big things happen” and I hope you like the season ahead. With very best wishes

MORE THAN A MEMORY

Wednesday 13 February

We have all read the scary facts about dementia and many of us don’t like to think too much about what a future with the condition might be like. The facts are just too frightening, but many people we know live with this every day and we want to address the taboo. Today we are exploring the experience of living with dementia with a unique sensory theatre and celebrating love in a heart-warming and intimate depiction though theatre, which celebrates the transformative power of music. This event is part of our Beyond the Stage programme, unique activities and events where you don’t just watch a show – you experience it.

SENSORY THEATRE 11am, 2pm, 4pm & 6pm In the Saltings Room In addition to the well-known symptoms of dementia, the memory loss, disorientation and mood swings, people with dementia often experience changes to their senses. These can affect the way the world looks, smells, feels and tastes. Dr Kim Brown of Nature Therapy CIC has created a pop-up sensory theatre which tries to show the type of sensory deprivation experienced by some people with dementia. The pop up theatre is usually used to help train clinicians and carers but today we’re opening it up the public. Free but please book in advance

GIANTS OF SCIENCE Followed by a post-show chat

Howard Coggins knows nothing about Science. Stu McLoughlin knows even less. Nevertheless, they have agreed to give a lecture on the subject, and after enlisting the help of the smartest scientific sages of the ages, that’s just what they aim to do. But even with the likes of Albert Einstein, Galileo, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and… um… Kriss Akabusi along for the ride, the chances of the dim-witted duo making it through the evening with any sense of dignity remaining intact seems less than likely. Still, they’re determined, like a pair of atoms missing a couple of electrons, to stay positive. With jarring jokes, pitiful puppetry, and the silliest of scientific songs, you can expect this raucous romp through the hilarious history of scientific stupidity to be… well, if nothing else, thoroughly entertaining. Returning to The Spring after previous hilarious sell-out shows, Living Spit are back with something that might just be… scien-triffic!

PEOPLE By Alan Bennett. Presented by Humdrum Amateur performance rights by kind permission of Samuel French Limited What do you do when the decrepit stately home you’re living in is beyond repair and beyond a joke, your finances won’t run to having the repairs done and the decent, worthy but excruciatingly dull National Trust have their collective beady eye on your property? Dorothy Stacpoole and her faithful live-in companion, Iris, have ideas - including leasing the place to a film company, while Dorothy’s treacherous sister, June, is more in favour of the National Trust option. To add to the bedlam, the film company are just a little more… adult … than expected. Alan Bennett’s 2012 play is HumDrum’s fourth venture into this most English of playwright’s work (The Madness of King George, Talking Heads, Habeas Corpus) and People is just as quirky, biting, insightful and laugh-out-loud funny as you’d expect.

EXHIBITIONS The Mezzanine Gallery is located upstairs in the museum and is open during standard opening hours Wednesday 9 January – Saturday 23 March

Monday 1 April – Friday 29 June

HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE FOOTBALL CLUB: 20 YEARS

KENWOOD IN HAVANT

In the Mezzanine Gallery To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the formation of Havant and Waterlooville FC, we are holding a special exhibition tracing the history of the Hawks. We have interviewed key players, staff and fans from the past two decades who have recalled the inevitable ups and downs of a non-league football club. This includes highlights such as the FA Cup run of 2007/08 and last year’s dramatic promotion to the National League, a feat that means the Hawks are now playing at their highest ever level. The exhibition will include the documentary film featuring Hawks’ heroes which will also be screened on 27 January. Please see page 7 for details.

In the Mezzanine Gallery The kitchen appliance manufacturer Kenwood moved its entire operation from Woking to Havant in 1962 and has been a major employer in the town ever since. Our exhibition will tell the story of Kenwood and the iconic products that helped spark a domestic revolution in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition will include a documentary film including interviews with former and current employees, who will tell stories about their working and social lives at Kenwood and track the way the company has developed since it first arrived in New Lane more than half a century ago.
