BADKE QUARTET SLIM CHANCE When Ronnie Lane left The Faces and formed Slim Chance he created a band which was hugely enjoyable as well as being a platform for his great songwriting skills. Original members Steve Simpson, Charlie Hart, Steve Bingham, Alun Davies and Colin Davey have established a reputation around the country as a top quality band playing Ronnie’s songs with passion and commitment.

Winners of the 1st prize at the 5th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 2007, the Badke Quartet has received widespread acclaim for its energetic and vibrant performances. Lecturer and writer Terry Barfoot will introduce Britten String Quartet No. 3 with musical examples played by the quartet.

DAMIEN O’KANE

O’Kane is primarily a banjo player who has recently been winning accolades as a singer. Probably best known for his work with Shona Kipling (the duo were nominated at the 2007 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards), Flook and as a fulltime member of Kate Rusby’s band. BBC Music said of his debut solo album ‘Summer Hill’: “…what hits you immediately is the richness of O'Kane’s voice. THE HISTORY OF JAZZ PIANO WITH

RICHARD MICHAEL Edinburgh Fringe sell out show 2011. One of Scotland’s most versatile musicians and Radio Scotland’s ‘Jazz Jargonbuster’. Richard is the author of ‘Jazz Beginnings’, was voted Jazz Educator of the year in the 2009 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and has just released his first solo piano CD. He is currently Visiting Professor of Jazz Piano at St Andrews University and his 2010 Edinburgh Fringe show, ‘The History of Jazz Piano’, won a Glasgow Herald ‘Angel’ award for outstanding performance, and sold out in 2011 and 2012. Rona Munro’s precisely worded, emotionally loaded drama was premiered in Edinburgh at the Traverse Theatre in 2002 and performed at the Royal Court Theatre, London in 2003. The drama starts with the first visit by Josie to her mother, Fay, who has served 15 years of a life sentence for killing Josie’s father. Josie has no memory of the first eleven years of her life. Fay longs to live vicariously through her daughter without confronting the moment of her crime. ‘Iron’ gradually but relentlessly draws its audience into a psychologically gripping mother-daughter relationship set within the claustrophobic world of prison life. Like all of the best drama, ‘Iron’ resonates and will stay with the audience long after they have left the theatre.

By Alan Ayckbourn It’s always good to see old friends – isn’t it? All Diana wants to do is to console the recently bereaved Colin with a gathering of old friends and a nice cup of tea. But the reunion succeeds only in pouring salt into wounds, and what a shame Gordon couldn't come, being so poorly. Ayckbourn treats this roadcrash of a party with a typical sureness of touch – it is at times sad and touching, but always bitingly funny. At least Colin seems to be enjoying his bereavement. Bench are an award-winning amateur theatre group.

This inventive comedy features just three actors playing over 20 roles in 80 minutes of fastpaced fun. Brimming with unfeasibly quick costume changes, stupidly surreal characters and wonderfully daft jokes, it is the most absurd contribution to the Dickens bicentenary you could hope to see.

Life drawing is the traditional cornerstone of art training. The human body offers every challenge in line and tone, perspective and composition. All abilities are welcome.

AN EXPEDITION TO THE GREAT EXHIBITION Victorian sisters Alexandra and Margaret have got their wires crossed! Alexandra, the loud and adventurous explorer, believes she will be preparing young volunteers for a ‘Great Expedition’ to foreign lands. Margaret however, a collector of weird and wonderful artefacts, knows their young audience will be presented with some of the worldly wonders on display at the 1851 ‘Great Exhibition’. Upon realising their misunderstanding they decide to present a magic lantern show, demonstrating survival tips for a trip to the London extravaganza.

LOUIS PEARL IS THE AMAZING BUBBLEMAN A show with lots of fun activities with Bubbles: people inside bubbles, square bubbles, Spaceship, Universe, & Centipede Bubbles, Edible Bubbles, Bubble Brains, Trampoline Bubbles, Trumpet Bubbles, William Tell Bubbles, and how to invent your own bubble toys. And then Louis covers science themes such as the colours of bubbles and why are bubbles round? He makes all of the science as fun as the fun!

Jenny Graham has worked as an artist and printmaker for 15 years. In this exhibition she explores the graphic intricacies of line, light, pattern and mystery to be found within our native trees and woodlands through a series of large monochrome photo-etchings and digital installation.

TIDEMARK TIME By Group 31 In the Sadler Gallery 16 January – 22 April Private View: Tues 22 Jan, 7pm This exhibition, inspired by the sea, presents unusual ways to experience and connect with the sea via striking visual impressions using found objects, paintings, collage, photography and sculpture. Group 31 are affiliated through friendship and a shared passion for art and are Rachel Stockholm, Jenny Grant, Eve Maple, Liz Osbourne, Lance Yeomans, Clare Redgrove, Jules and Tim Simmons.

Private View: Tues 30 April, 7pm Alison’s textile maps explore visual systems of communication; investigating signs as a means of removing textual barriers. She personalises her maps by mixing the modern with the historical, including inaccuracies and personal impressions that represent the cultural diversity of modern society.

CAPTURING THE EPHEMERAL WILLIAM GRANT’S HAVANT In the Mezzanine Gallery 12 January – 27 March

AARON BENNETT In the Mezzanine Gallery 1 April – 15 May Based on the local history trail around Havant and referencing the beginning of photography with the use of daguerreotype wet plate images, Aaron wants to try to replicate a moment in time. The images are photographed using up to date digital cameras, but the post production photo manipulation creates a texture which harks back to the wet plate image which was very fashionable at the turn of the 20th century.

Meet the Artist: Sat 8 June, 2pm – 4pm (incl. refreshments and poetry reading) Bobbie’s paintings express the feeling in a fragment of space and time. She is inspired by moments in a garden, mist, stillness, grass, cobwebs, fading light, mud and brambles. Through her paintings she makes pathways in memory to hold and preserve a transient sensation.

EXHIBITIONS

Born in 1893, William Grant began painting in earnest in his late teens and carried on for over half a century, during which time he captured images of Havant and the surrounding area and its people. His favourite medium was watercolour but this didn’t prevent him from capturing strength of character in his sitters, nor indeed the vivid colours of the summer gardens and landscape surrounding the town he loved.

Quite extraordinary pottery leaves exquisitely made – why not treat yourself to an original and beautiful gift.

Like many children, John was introduced to stamps at about the age of seven. After many years of collecting stamps from all over the world, he eventually discovered First Day Covers. He collects British Limited Edition Covers, preferably with fewer than 100 being produced but up to 500 are acceptable. His ‘speciality’ is the collection of Autographed First Day Covers, featuring actors and actresses. Some have been bought from stamp fairs, dealers and online, but he prefers to send the covers to the theatres and hope they will be returned duly signed by the celebrities concerned.

3 April – 29 May Hand selected local wood is turned and shaped in exploration of the positive and negative. The wood that is taken away to create the negative shape is as important as the final piece.

Serena makes accessories and garments inspired by a passion for European costume dating back over 600 years. Her work is not constrained by historical accuracy but is distorted to create a curiosity that mocks frivolity and the futility of life à la mode.

BEADWORK BEAUTIES SIAN NOLAN 4 April – 31 July This eclectic collection of beadwork has been created over a number of years and is a mix of Sian’s own designs and other Bead Artists she admires. Many of the 3D pieces have been made following Japanese instructions, a style and culture Sian has an interest in. Sian does not sell her work as she can’t bear to part with it! Some items can take weeks or even months to complete and each piece feels very ‘personal’.
