To Drop or Not Drop?
Trying to make the tough decision this semester By Cristian Garcia OPINIONS EDITOR
On April 15, SMCCCD sent a mass email concerning the changing of the grading and the withdrawal systems. This email raised the question to many students: With everything that is happening in the world with COVID-19, is continuing even as an option? Students have now been given three options for how they can deal with the rest of the semester’s classes. SMCCCD gave the following options: Firstly, the “incomplete� grading option, for which students can have a class marked “incomplete� and work with the professor at a future time during which the student can complete the class and eventually receive a grade; and the “pass/no pass� grading option; the final option is “excused withdrawal�, usually not given at this time in the semester. These are options available for every class now, and this could have an effect on students planning to transfer in the future. It could prove to be a big help with students who are currently struggling. It has been over a month now since Skyline’s operations have moved away from campus, and we can all agree that classes do not feel the same. Being inside a classroom — being in-person with some of these subjects — is, for many, the only way to really comprehend the knowledge. At home, it can be really hard to not procrastinate, with television, phones, and computers all within arm’s reach, being focused can be a struggle. Families are spending more time than ever at home, and many students must be going crazy, since

What about those students who were right at the edge of barely passing with a very difficult class, and then this happened, and the adjustment made that student take ten steps back?! ‌That is when it becomes okay to drop your class. Many students had jobs, and due to the

People in this situation are probably thinking primarily about their income, and what they’re going to do next — Do they file unemployment or go on the job hunt? We could not control or predict the pandemic that is taking place, but the spring 2020 semester truly has not been the ideal semester for any student. Students find themselves in many different situa-
tions, and when it comes down to choosing an option, SMCCCD has offered several potential courses of action. Whatever decision you end up making, there should be no judgement or regret that you experience if you drop your class. At the end of this, students will still be able to come back for a future semester, and make up for whatever progress the pandemic stopped them from making.

Earth Day Under Quarantine Lives On By Milla Tivadar

Last week on the 22nd of April, the globe celebrated 50 years of Earth Day, a movement first created to encourage awareness of air and water pollution after Santa Barabara experienced an oil spill nightmare. Birds soaked in tar and cooked other marine life off of their rock habitats, the spill uncovered a massive cleanup and a call to action. Led by Nelson Gaylord in 1970, a Winsconson senator at the time, mobilized 20 million citizens to lead an environmental movement. Now, more than 1 billion people participate in activities for change and appreciation on Earth Day each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. With the COVID-19 pandemic running its course, Earth Day is still in effect. This had halted plans to volunteer, plant trees and do clean ups, sign petitions for action and more, but it did not discourage the masses to participate. In fact, millions came together online to witness and engage in various live events and challenges, registered to vote, shared plant-based recipes and switched to green power. Everyone played their part, including artists, musicians, even Pope Francis made a powerful statement, “this should make us all more aware that we stand on holy ground.” For being cooped up indoors, the gratifying feeling of stepping outdoors, has fueled appreciation for it even more. Peaceful solitude, fresh plants and the Earth’s natural perfume are valuable to both the planet and humanity. The resources we take from it are valuable, and if they are not properly taken care of and protected, we risk losing the harmony of planetary and human health. The uproar of climate action has been fueled by the disruption of peace and threatening awarenesses in our natural and personal world.

The Earth is millions of years old, but the last 50 have been dedicatied to conserving it. Michael Pompeo made a statement on Earth Day to raise awareness about wildlife “wet markets.” “Where live species are sold for human consumption and are hotspots for wildlife trafficking, creating risks for the generation and spread of diseases and may have played a critical role in the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.” said Pompeo. To call on all governments to close wildlife wet markets permanently could reduce risk to human health and discourage the consumption of trafficked wildlife and wildlife products. If not only this, but thinking of other ways to slow down the way we consume foods and goods to reduce waste and environmental losses that are inextricably linked to our health. More than ever, it is said that
switching to a plant-based diet is taking “the single most impactful step that you can take as an individual to fight climate change,” according to Dotsie Bausch, executive director of the nonprofit Switch4Good. The United Nations estimates that animal agriculture accounts for at least 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Learning to live more plant-based does not require a full-stop to eating meat, dairy and eggs, but it can teach the benefits of consuming less for a well-rounded lifestyle, and more veggies of course. The result of staying indoors during this quarantine can have a real affect on our state of body and mind. Some are dealing with it better than others, but with lockdown pending further and further, and patience growing thinner, finding new ways to help keep your cool when staying in the great indoors, might be just what you need. On the Mental & Physical: Since there it is no longer an option to spend an hour or two at the gym, a lot of us are looking for ways to keep fit. It doesn’t require a set of weights, a treadmill, or even a fancy yoga mat. Just getting your heart rate up with a few sets of burpees or lifting a heavy jug of milk up and down, even dancing in your room to a good playlist does just the trick. YouTube and Instagram have a world of inspiration

out what is buzzing in the stock market. The balance we are looking for here, is between achieving something through mental strain and creativity, and achieving a Netflix series in under a week. Building confidence through exercises that both express yourself and feel comfortable with by making it achievable can be fun as well! Watching Netflix can actually make us feel more exhausted and less inclined to work hard, but can stimulate us through laughter and other forms of art through film. It is nice to take a break when you’re having “those days” nonetheless. It’s recommended you have at least 20 minutes of physical exercise a day to keep you fit, but that’s a recommendation that is seen as an “at least” and not a limit. Also keeping your mind engaged is as important as your physical wellbeing, so finding some fun activities that require a bit of persistence in the mind really helps keep everything functioning at its best. On Lowering Tense Feelings: Being stuck inside with family or roommates, can really infringe on personal space and test your patience with each other, and let’s face it; arguments happen. So let’s talk about some mental exercises to help calm you down if ever one

And if you run out of things to say, move to another part of your body. So from your feet to your lower legs or from your hands to your forearm. This makes you more aware of yourself and less on attacking the other person. Once you feel centered in your own skin, it’s easier to breathe and form stronger insight on situations. Environmental Scan: Literally start naming things you find in the room. Very much like the body scan, recruit the col-
ors of the objects, maybe walk up to something and feel the texture. Recognize it for what it is, and how it makes you feel or what it’s used for. Color Finding: Think of a specific color and look around the room for it. It really helps if it’s a lesser used color like a bright purple or a deep orange. Keep looking for colors that make you feel happy or envoke something inside you. When in Doubt, Walk it Out: Going out for a walk can also help. Of course take the necessary safety precautions and stay safe in general, but just going for a short walk through your neighborhood can help a lot in a tense situation. Removing yourself from a rougher situation really helps clear your head, the fresh air never hurts and seeing new scenery from the walls and doors you see all the time is really calming. So when in doubt, walk it out. This is a stressful time. We have a million and one things to worry about and that was before the whole COVID-19 situation blew up.
