a Fortaleza Deputy Chief of Staff Itza García Rodríguez announced Sunday that flights to and from the island resumed at 1 a.m., in accordance with airline schedules, and that all island airports are operating normally.

García confirmed that multiple flights had already begun landing at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in Carolina.

According to data provided by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, some 420 flight operations were affected by the extraordinary measures implemented in recent days, resulting in itinerary changes for nearly 48,000 passengers, as reported by the president of SJU operator Aerostar. García urged travelers who experienced changes to contact their airlines directly to confirm schedules and services. Additionally, the Tourism Company has activated the assistance line 1-800-981-7575 to support visitors and travelers in Puerto Rico. A total of 214 calls were received and processed prior to the announcement of the resumption of flights, with an average handling time of 5.26 minutes per case.

Authorities also coordinated with the hotel sector to provide shelter for visitors impacted by flight disruptions. The Department of Housing maintained an overnight shift at hotels to assist any arriving passengers in need of accommodations.

The Puerto Rico Ports Authority reported that airports across the island were operating according to airline schedules, including those in Vieques and Culebra. At Mercedita International Airport in Ponce, three departures and two arrivals were in operation early Sunday. Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla was running flights as scheduled. Airport in Isla Grande, Vieques Air Link was operating normally, along with private commercial flights. José Aponte de la Torre Airport in Ceiba had 14 scheduled departures and 14 arrivals.

Benjamín Rivera Airport in Culebra had resumed operations, with Air Margarita charter flights already departing and other flights following itineraries. Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport in Vieques had Cape Air flights running between Vieques and San Juan, with operations on schedule. Eugenio María de Hostos Airport in Mayagüez was also operating normally, with Cape Air managing four arrivals and four departures.

Regarding cancellations, a total of 420 flights were canceled on Saturday: 401 in San Juan, 13 in Aguadilla and six in Ponce.

Cruise operations remained unaffected. Four homeporting cruise ships were disembarking Sunday without incident: Grand Princess, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Ilma, Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas, and Norwegian Epic. As an additional measure to accommodate passengers, two vessels were to remain overnight in San Juan: the Grand Princess until 6 p.m. on Monday, and the Ritz-Carlton Ilma, which also was to stay overnight.

García reiterated the Puerto Rico government’s commitment to keeping residents and visitors informed and continuing interagency coordination to ensure safe and efficient operations at all points of entry to the island.

U.S. airlines had canceled flights, and air travel was disrupted Saturday after federal aviation authorities shut down U.S.controlled airspace over the Caribbean in response to a U.S. military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, according to a New York Times report.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a notice to airmen early Saturday, known as a NOTAM, banning U.S. civil aircraft from operating, as the United States took action against the South American country.

The FAA cited “safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing military activity” as the reason for the closure. The agency did not specify the nature of the military operations in its notice but said that the action was taken in response to the developments involving Venezuela, the Times report said.

Those developments became clearer later Saturday, when President Donald Trump announced the U.S. military operation.

Maduro’s capture followed months of U.S. military pressure, including deadly strikes on vessels, described by U.S. officials as drug-carrying boats; the seizure of a tanker transporting Venezuelan oil; and a growing U.S. military presence in the Caribbean.

Airlines adjusted schedules and canceled flights into and out of Caribbean destinations including Puerto Rico, St. Lucia and Barbados as the order took effect. Passengers were advised to check with carriers for updated travel information.

In a post on social media Saturday afternoon, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the FAA had ordered the closures to “ensure the SAFETY of the flying public.”

PIP rejects military intervention in Venezuela, while governor praises it

he former gubernatorial candidate for the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP), Juan Dalmau Ramírez, strongly condemned the U.S. intervention inVenezuela and capture of President Nicolás Maduro in what he described as a “unilateral military aggression” by the United States government.

Dalmau, whose party has had close ties with the Maduro government, was the only island political official who objected to the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, describing the action as a “flagrant violation of international law and a move made behind the back of the United Nations.”

Dalmau emphasized in a statement Sunday that “the right to peace, self-determination, and the dignity of peoples are irreplaceable pillars of the global order.”

“It is urgent to restore peace and international order through diplomatic dialogue,” he said. “As Pope Leo XIV has expressed regarding the conflict between the U.S. and Venezuela, dialogue must be pursued in a fair manner.”

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also expressed “deep alarm over the escalation in Venezuela, which culminated today in a U.S. military action.” He added, “I am concerned that international law has not been respected. I call on all actors in Venezuela to engage in inclusive dialogue, with respect for human rights and the rule of law.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday said that the Trump administration is “running”

“the direction” of Venezuela until leadership could be transitioned.

“What we are running is the direction that this is going to move moving forward,” Rubio said on ABC’s “Meet The Press.“ “And that is we have leverage.”

The intervention, in the works since late summer, followed months of threats and dozens of boat strikes on suspected “narco-terrorists.” American personnel transported Maduro and his wife to New York to face drug trafficking, terrorism and firearms charges. He is in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

The Venezuelan government issued an official response over the weekend following an airstrike against Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, labeling it a “grave military aggression.”

In a statement, Caracas asserted that the attack constitutes a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter, particularly the principles safeguarding sovereignty, equality among states, and the prohibition of the use of force.

“The attack threatens peace and international stability, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, and places millions of lives at serious risk,” the statement warned.

Residents of Caracas reported hearing loud explosions in several parts of the city during the early hours, along with helicopter overflights, according to testimonies shared on social media. The Venezuelan government rejected the United States intentions to seize the country’s strategic resources, particularly

“They will not succeed,” the statement declared, stressing that after more than two centuries of independence, the Venezuelan people and their government remain steadfast in defending national sovereignty.

The administration further denounced what it described as an attempt to impose a “colonial war” to force regime change, asserting that such efforts will fail as previous ones have. Maduro had ordered the implementation of a state of external commotion across the national territory to “protect citizens’ rights, ensure the full functioning of republican institutions, and immediately move to armed

resistance.”

“The entire country must mobilize to defeat this imperialist aggression,” the statement urged.

Venezuela announced plans to bring the matter before the United Nations Security Council, the secretary-general, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to demand international condemnation and accountability for the U.S. government.

Caracas also warned that it reserves the right to exercise legitimate defense to protect its population, territory, and independence, while calling for global solidarity against what it termed foreign aggression.

Puerto Rico Gov. Jenniffer González Colón reaffirmed support for the U.S. action on Sunday, calling it “a new day for Venezuela.”

“The decisive action by the United States, led by President Trump, reaffirms the commitment to end narcoterrorism in our hemisphere and to defend the rule of law, democracy, and human rights,” she said in a written statement.

“For years I have denounced the socialism that has kept Venezuela in chains,” the governor added. “I reiterate my solidarity with this brave people and my hope that this process opens the door to an orderly, peaceful, and democratic transition that allows Venezuela to regain the freedom and prosperity it longs for. As Governor of Puerto Rico and a U.S. citizen, I am happy because Venezuela will have peace without Nicolás Maduro’s narco-dictatorship and his gang.”

Western PR inns prepare for stranded tourists amid fears of 2nd US intervention in Venezuela

ospitality businesses along Puerto Rico’s western coast say they are ready to accommodate tourists who could be stranded on the island if a second U.S. military intervention occurs in Venezuela. Ángel Rodríguez, owner of the Boquemar inn in Cabo Rojo, said the events early Saturday caught local innkeepers by surprise. “The most concerning issue was the situation of several tourists staying at our parador whose flights were canceled,” Rodríguez said. “In our case, the affected tourists were from Florida and had to stay an extra day at Boquemar. Finally, early this morning they were notified that flights were available and

were able to return home.”

Rodríguez added that if the United States decides to launch another attack on the South American nation, his inn will remain open to host travelers for as long as necessary until airspace reopens. He noted that past emergencies, such as Hurricane Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic, have helped local businesses develop protocols to safeguard guests during crises.

Despite the uncertainty, Rodríguez said rooms are still available for the upcoming Three Kings Day celebrations. Festivities in Cabo Rojo will include family-friendly events, highlighted by the traditional Three Kings Caravan departing Monday from the local Yacht Club.

The most notable recent intervention occurred in 2019, when Washington recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president, imposing sanctions and supporting efforts to oust President Nicolás Maduro. While that episode did not involve direct military action, it heightened tensions and led to fears of armed conflict.

Earlier interventions date back to the early 20th century, when U.S. forces occasionally deployed to protect American interests during political upheavals in Latin America. Today, any renewed military action would likely stem from ongoing disputes over Venezuela’s governance, economic collapse, and its alliances with countries such as Russia and Iran.

Oversight board warns gov’t over municipal tax implementation

he Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico has raised concerns that two recently enacted laws -- Act 141-2024 and Act 215-2024 -- may be implemented by municipalities despite failing to meet federal requirements under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA).

In a letter dated Dec. 30, 2025, addressed to Vicky González Vega, deputy executive director of the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority (AAFAF by its initials in Spanish), the oversight board said it has not received critical information about the laws’ compliance with the Fiscal Plan and PROMESA, nor confirmation that they are not being enforced locally. The board noted indications that portions of Act 215 are already in effect.

Act 215 amends the Puerto Rico Municipal Code to allow municipalities to impose

construction excise taxes on projects carried out for legal entities -- even if those entities are exempt from such taxes. Such impositions could include projects funded by commonwealth or federal dollars, with municipalities potentially applying higher tax rates than usual.

The oversight board warned that taxing federally funded projects could jeopardize more than $4 billion in obligated federal funds, including disaster recovery and infrastructure initiatives.

“Taxing these projects could be viewed as a misuse of federal funds and discourage future allocations to Puerto Rico,” the letter stated.

The board also argued in the letter that such taxes could undermine energy infrastructure reconstruction efforts, increase project costs, and deter competitive bidding -- contradicting the Fiscal Plan’s economic growth goals.

“Such taxes obviously make the projects more expensive,” the oversight board said. “In doing so, they can render projects less profitable or even unprofitable, thereby discouraging

necessary construction projects from proceeding or causing planned construction projects to be abandoned. Similarly, the increased costs imposed by excise taxes can dissuade the best developers from bidding on projects, potentially depriving the commonwealth of the best vendors and/or limiting bidders such that the commonwealth does not obtain the most competitive pricing.”

The oversight board emphasized that the island government has repeatedly missed deadlines to provide required certifications and assurances. Despite extensions granted through October 2025, the board said it still lacks confirmation that municipalities are adhering to pre-Act 215 and pre-Act 141 procurement requirements.

The board directed the government to submit all outstanding materials by this Friday, warning that it reserves the right to take actions under PROMESA to nullify or prevent enforcement of the laws if compliance is not achieved.

Trump long wanted to ‘take the oil.’ He says he’ll do it in Venezuela.

hile he was out of office, President Donald Trump mused about what would have happened if the United States had taken control of Venezuela.

“We would have gotten all that oil,” he said in a speech at the North Carolina Republican Convention in 2023.

“It would have been right next door.”

On Saturday, Trump made it clear that he now intends to follow through.

In the past year, as the Trump administration built up pressure against Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan leader, the president and his top aides said that the aggressive U.S. actions were necessary to curb drugs and migration from that country. But on Saturday, as Trump discussed the predawn attack on Venezuela that led to the capture of its leader, it was evident that the president’s longtime fixation on oil was a driving factor in his decision to green-light the mission.

“We’re going to be taking out a tremendous amount of wealth out of the ground,” Trump told reporters as he celebrated the seizure of Maduro, promising that U.S. companies would be able to tap more of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.

The money made, he said, would go not only to the people of Venezuela, but also to U.S. oil companies and “to the United States of America in the form of reimbursement for the damages caused us by that country.”

There was little immediate clarity as to how the White House envisions the United States profiting from Venezuela’s oil. Analysts warn that large increases in the country’s oil production could take years and tens of billions of dollars in spending. But Trump indicated that the country’s oil wealth was a key factor not only in his decision to attack, but also in pledging that the United States would “run” Venezuela for the foreseeable future.

“It won’t cost us anything because the money coming out of the ground is very substantial,” Trump said, adding that “we’re going to get reimbursed for everything that we spend.”

Venezuela has about 17% of the world’s known oil reserves, or more than 300 billion barrels, more than any other country. But its production is only about 1% of the world total.

Before Venezuela nationalized its oil industry in 1976, U.S. companies including Exxon, Mobil and Gulf Oil were major players. The country reopened its oil industry to foreign drillers in the 1990s, but Hugo Chávez, Maduro’s predecessor, began another phase of nationalization in 2007. U.S. oil giants including Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips claimed they were owed billions of dollars in compensation because their operations were seized.

That history feeds the Trump administration’s contention that Venezuela stole oil from the United States — an argument that the White House increasingly made in

Stephen Miller, the senior Trump adviser central to the president’s immigration crackdown, posted on social media last month that “American sweat, ingenuity and toil created the oil industry in Venezuela.”

“If you remember, they took all of our energy rights; they took all of our oil from not that long ago,” Trump said last month. “And we want it back.”

Laying claim to other countries’ oil has long been a fixture in Trump’s rhetoric.

“I’ve been saying it for years. Take the oil,” he told The New York Times in 2016, when asked how his strategy to fight the Islamic State group in the Middle East would differ from President Barack Obama’s approach.

As the Trump administration increased its pressure on Maduro during the past year, oil was not initially central to its public ratio-

nale. Instead, the White House focused on claims that Maduro had directed drug trafficking and gang members who migrated to the United States — some of which have been disputed by Trump’s own intelligence agencies.

When Trump said in March that he would impose tariffs on countries that buy Venezuelan oil, he said he was doing it because, he claimed, Venezuela had “purposefully and deceitfully” sent “murderers and people of a very violent nature” to the United States.

But behind the scenes, as the Times reported last month, the future of Venezuela’s oil was central to Trump’s deliberations as early as last spring. The White House saw the pressure campaign against Venezuela as a way to combine three separate policy goals: crippling Maduro, using military force against drug cartels and securing access to Venezuela’s oil reserves for U.S. companies.

Chevron has in recent years been the only U.S. oil company operating in Venezuela, thanks to permission from the governments of both countries to produce and export oil there. Chevron’s activities played into the White House deliberations, as the company lobbied the White House for an extension of the Biden-era license that allowed it to expand its operations in Venezuela, as the Times previously reported.

However, on Saturday, Chevron was circumspect, even after Trump said U.S. companies would soon spend “billions of dollars” on Venezuela’s oil infrastructure.

The company initially sent reporters a statement saying it was “prepared to work constructively with the U.S. government during this period, leveraging our experience and presence to strengthen U.S. energy security.” It later said the statement was incorrect and issued a new one that removed mention of the U.S. government.

“Chevron remains focused on the safety and well-being of our employees, as well as the integrity of our assets,” the company said. “We continue to operate in full compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.”

Maduro and his wife face a fresh indictment in Manhattan

N

icolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela captured in a military raid on Caracas, faces charges in the Southern District of New York, where prosecutors have targeted him for years.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi posted the new indictment on social media Saturday.

It charges Maduro with narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine, among other charges. His wife, Cilia Flores, is also charged in the cocaine conspiracy.

Maduro, the indictment said, “allows cocaine-fueled corruption to flourish for his own benefit, for the benefit of members of his ruling regime and for the benefit of his family members.”

“The defendant now sits atop a corrupt, illegitimate government that, for decades, has leveraged government power to protect and promote illegal activity, including drug trafficking,” it continued. “That drug trafficking has enriched and entrenched Venezuela’s political and military elite.”

In an earlier post, Bondi said that Maduro and his wife would “soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.” President Donald Trump said that the couple was being brought to New York.

Though the charges against Flores are new, Maduro was previously indicted in Manhattan in 2020 on similar allegations. With those charges pending, Secretary of State Marco Rubio referred to Maduro last year as a “fugitive of American justice.”

The 2020 indictment said that Maduro had come to lead a drug trafficking organization, the Cartel de los Soles, or Cartel of the Suns, as he gained power in Venezuela.

Cartel de los Soles has been an ironic nickname for the Maduro administration’s military officers, who wear suns on their epaulets.

The earlier indictment named six defendants. The one unsealed Saturday also names

six, but they are almost entirely different, including only two men from the earlier charges. They are Maduro and Diosdado Cabello Rondón, who is the minister of interior, justice and peace, a member of the armed forces and vice president of the ruling party.

The others charged include Maduro’s son, Nicolas Maduro, known as Nicolasito; a former minister of the interior and justice, Ramón Rodriguez Chacín; and Héctor Guerrero Flores, who prosecutors said was the leader of Tren de Aragua, a gang that the Trump administration designated last year as a foreign terrorist organization.

The inclusion of Guerrero Flores, who was indicted in a separate case last month, would appear to reflect the White House’s repeated assertion that Maduro worked with narco-terrorists, including Tren de Aragua.

U.S. intelligence agencies have disputed that conclusion.

The charges against Guerrero Flores do not tie him directly to Maduro, but rather to “members of the Venezuelan regime” and “an individual he understood to be working with” it.

Southern District prosecutors had long targeted Maduro, and the investigation that led to his 2020 indictment was overseen by Emil Bove, a prosecutor who years later became one of Trump’s criminal defense lawyers and whom the president this year appointed to the federal bench. One of the other prosecutors was Amanda Houle, who now leads the office’s criminal division.

The indictment says Maduro’s wife, along with her husband and other defendants, “partnered with narcotics traffickers and narco-terrorist groups” that were sending cocaine from Venezuela to the United States through countries like Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.

It also says Flores attended a meeting in 2007 where she “accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to broker a meeting between a large-scale drug trafficker and the director of Venezuela’s national antidrug offi-

Though the circumstances of Maduro’s capture in a military raid were extraordinary, the American legal system has experience in arresting South American leaders and putting them on trial. own country in connection with a U.S. extradition request. He, too, was brought to the United States, where he was tried, convicted and sentenced.

Late last year, Trump abruptly pardoned Hernández, saying that the case against him — which had also been overseen by Bove and had been built over several presidential administrations — “was a Biden administration setup.”

The case against Hernández and the 2020 charges against Maduro bear a significant resemblance. Both leaders were accused of using their governments as vehicles for the exporting of cocaine into the United States. And both were charged with conspiring to possess machine guns, which, combined with drug trafficking charges, carries potentially lengthy prison sentences.

Maduro’s 2020 indictment has been pending in the Manhattan federal court before Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, a veteran of nearly three decades on the Southern District bench.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998, the judge is best known for overseeing the many lawsuits filed after the 9/11 terror attacks, by families of the dead and workers at ground zero.

More recently, Hellerstein, 92, has presided over Trump’s attempts to move his Manhattan criminal conviction into federal court, a matter that is pending.

To Trump, on Venezuela: You break it, you own it

I

t is far too early to have clear answers as to what will happen next in Venezuela in the wake of the Trump administration’s removal of President Nicolás Maduro to stand trial in the United States. But I have a lot of questions based on such interventions by the United States in other regions.

On March 19, 2011, a NATO-led coalition launched a military intervention — exclusively using air power — into the Libyan civil war that eventually led to the toppling of Moammar Gadhafi’s government, followed in October of that year by his killing by opposition forces. On March 29, 2011, I wrote a column that concluded, “Dear Lord, please make President Obama lucky.” The theme of the essay was that Barack Obama had just facilitated the ouster of the leader of Libya, but we had no forces on the ground to shape events after that.

“I don’t know Libya,” I wrote at the time, “but my gut tells me that any kind of decent outcome there will require boots on the ground — either as military help for the rebels to oust Gadhafi as we want, or as post-Gadhafi peacekeepers and referees between tribes and factions to help with any transition to democracy. Those boots cannot be ours. We absolutely cannot afford it.”

So, who would referee the next phase?

to the local competing forces, tribes and militias, which were divided then and remain divided to this day. Nearly 15 years later, Libya is still a mess, with two governments vying for control, and it’s still a dangerous jumping-off point for refugees and migrants from Africa across the Mediterranean into Europe.

I am certainly not arguing for a U.S. military takeover in Venezuela, but I am certainly wondering how we can shape events and trends there to support our interests and the interests of the Venezuelan people without a military presence on the ground.

Grab-and-go is great if you are doing lunch, but as a geopolitical strategy it has its limits.

In his news conference Saturday, President Donald Trump seemed to recognize that — and did not shy away from it. He said, “We are going to run the country until such time that we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” going on to say that “we can’t take a chance that somebody else takes over.”

He added that the U.S. was “ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so.”

Trump even added, “We are not afraid of boots on the ground if we have to.”

Wow! Trump did not shrink from suggesting that we are undertaking the biggest nation-building project America has engaged in since Iraq and Afghanistan. Does he have any idea what a daunting and open-ended project that could be?

How the Trump administration is going to run Venezuela is simply not clear. Does it have an arrangement with the remnant of the Maduro regime to step aside? Does Trump plan to pose to Maduro’s rump team an ultimatum to leave and then the U.S. will organize elections? What is clear is that America running Venezuela would be a huge job, and there will be a significant portion of Trump’s isolationist MAGA base that is not likely to embrace that task.

I would also add that listening to Trump vastly exaggerate the threat posed by Venezuela and Maduro to the United States had very disturbing echoes of the way the George W. Bush team exaggerated the threat of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify its invasion. When you don’t call things by their real and honest name, you get in trouble.

Many Venezuelans will celebrate Maduro’s removal, but he has significant armed allies — a band of thugs and narcotraffickers would be the best way to describe them — who have been controlling Venezuela through violent repression and the stealing of elections. What will be the balance of power of the pro- and anti-Maduro camps, and what level of disorder will it produce?

Another question: What are the leaders of other key nations — Xi Jinping in China, Vladimir Putin in Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine and Lai Ching-te in Taiwan — thinking now?

first. China could well see this U.S. action as just one more precedent that would justify its toppling of the government of Taiwan at the time of its choosing. China will also most likely celebrate the fact that the U.S. will be more preoccupied than ever with its own hemisphere and have much less time and energy for curbing China’s regional power plays.

Another factor to keep in mind: Most of Venezuela’s oil is exported to China.

As for Putin, he is surely thinking that if the Trump administration gets bogged down trying to manage a postMaduro Venezuela, it will have even less time, energy and resources to devote to Ukraine. Zelenskyy surely has to worry about the same thing today.

The Trump national security team is already a strange hybrid of freelancers — like Steve Witkoff, whose background is in real estate — and inexperienced hands like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio, who is now serving as both secretary of state and national security adviser. With the peace processes in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip still very much unfinished, how many balls can this crew juggle effectively, with its seat-of-the-pants “wait to see what President Trump tweets first” way of doing business?

Finally, on Feb. 12, 2003, roughly a month before the Bush administration invaded Iraq, I wrote a column in which I said: “The first rule of any Iraq invasion is the pottery store rule: You break it, you own it. We break Iraq, we own Iraq — and we own the primary responsibility for rebuilding a country of 23 million people that has more in common with Yugoslavia than with any other Arab nation.” Secretary of State Colin Powell told CNN’s Larry King and later Bob Woodward that he adopted my formulation in presenting the Iraq War options to President George W. Bush.

It is hard not to ask that same question today. The Trump administration just broke the leadership of Venezuela; Trump now owns responsibility for what comes next there. If it leads to a new and better government for the people of Venezuela, great. Trump will be remembered for setting that process in motion.

Desde tempranas horas de la mañana, cientos de familias se dieron cita a los predios del Centro de Usos Múltiples del municipio de Ceiba para, además de recoger los obsequios navideños, compartir en un ambiente de camaradería y alegría.

También se entregaron unas 1,000 cajas para la recogida de la grama, símbolo de esta tradición milenaria.

Día de los Reyes Magos el próximo 6 de enero. Alrededor de unos 1,300 niños recibieron juguetes en una actividad familiar y llena de alegría”, comentó el Presidente Cameral.

Esta ley ordena el despliegue de la bandera de prisioneros de guerra y perdidos en acción (POW/MIA, por sus siglas en inglés) en ciertos edificios públicos del Gobierno de Puerto Rico; busca concientizar sobre el significado de este día en las comunidades escolares del Departamento de Educación; declara el tercer viernes de septiembre como el “Día de Reconocimiento de los Militares POW/MIA” que es el mismo día que se celebra a nivel nacional, entre otros.

Durante toda su trayectoria, la hoy gobernadora ha promovido política pública para honrar el sacrificio de los veteranos y promover para ellos una mejor calidad de vida; mientras fue legisladora estatal fue la autora de la Carta de Derechos del Veterano Puertorriqueño del Siglo XXI y como congresista, fue la primera representante de la isla en ser parte del Comité de Veteranos, con amplio

historial de acciones en beneficios para esta población.

Esta nueva ley crea una política pública que le permite a todo el pueblo de Puerto Rico conocer y valorar la gesta del veterano y además, rendir tributo a aquellos que nunca regresaron.

“Es deber de todos recordar y honrar a esos que todavía están sirviendo por cuanto no se sabe de su paradero y precisamente eso es lo que busca esta medida; crear una cultura de respeto a las fuerzas armadas, así como de los sacrificios personales de quienes sirven en ellas.”, expresó la gobernadora.

She spent a night in the Anne Frank House. And met ghosts.

W

hen a book editor invited renowned French novelist Lola Lafon to contribute a volume to Edition Stock’s popular “Night at the Museum” series — in which authors camp out in a museum overnight and write about the experience — Lafon was hesitant.

“I couldn’t see myself being in an art museum and able to legitimately write about it,” she said over herbal tea recently in a favorite Parisian cafe, cozy with fireplaces and soft armchairs.

Then she had an idea.

“She said, ‘There’s only one place where I would want to spend the night,’” said Alina Gurdiel, the editor who asked Lafon to join a list of series contributors that already included Leïla Slimani and Enki Bilal. “‘And that’s in the Anne Frank House.’”

The resulting book, a slim essay released in French in 2021 and published in the United States in late November as “When You Listen to This Song,” saw Lafon spend an August night, alone, in the Amsterdam attic annex where Anne Frank and seven other people hid from the Nazis for 25 months. A reckoning not just with the idea of Anne Frank and her “Diary of a Young Girl” but with Lafon’s own past, it has been a sensation in its native France.

“What can be done with one single night?”

Lafon asks in the book. “It would take years to reply.”

Lauren Elkin, the book’s English translator, was initially skeptical: “When I first heard about it I thought, just what we need, another book about Anne Frank — but actually we do need this book. It’s the most beautiful meditation on memory and absence and winds up in the most unexpected places.”

The complexities of girlhood are a subject that Lafon, an outspoken feminist, has addressed throughout her career, in novels such as “The Little Communist Who Never Smiled” (2014), about Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, and “Reeling” (2022), set in the world of ballet and jazz dance (Lafon, 51, is a former classical dancer). So in a sense, Anne Frank was a natural subject — the object of obsession, fetishization and, at times, a flattening idealization.

“I really love the idea of writing about something that is very well known, the opposite of writing about discovery,” Lafon said. “I feel the novel where you discover something is very male. I don’t discover lands. I know the lands I’m writing about.”

(Maxime La/The New York Times) Lafon, who had not read “The Diary of a Young Girl” since her own school days, had no illusions that one night would render her an authority. But asking questions felt increasingly important. Anne Frank (as Lafon calls her throughout, shunning the first-name chumminess so many adopt) has become “a symbol, but of what? Why do we love her so much?

What do we love, and how do we love her?”

There was a more personal angle, too. “A French writer referred to it as my Jewish coming-out,” Lafon said. It started with a conversation with her sister. “You write about a lot of things, you talk about sexual violence, you talk about people personally, but you never seem Jewish,” Lafon paraphrased. “And I felt offended because it was true; I hadn’t confronted it at all.”

Lafon grew up in a family in which her mother, hidden throughout World War II, never acknowledged being Jewish. Because of her French name and blond coloring, Lafon herself was able to “pass” — and gladly did.

But it was more than this; as a student, she avoided any lessons that dealt with the Holocaust, sneered at “Schindler’s List” and “Life Is Beautiful,” veered away from the darkness of her family’s past. As she writes: “I didn’t want to hear about it, didn’t want to know about it.

Their nightmares would not be my own. All I wanted was to be part of a normal family, who didn’t have history books written about them, who inspired neither pity nor hatred.”

She said: “As a writer, when you realize

there’s something you don’t talk about, that you don’t have the words for, you write. I believe in writing that costs you something.”

She found a way into the project through the text of the diary itself. But she rejected the conventional view that the book represents the naive and relatable record of a young Everygirl.

“Anne Frank was, in fact, a writer,” said Lafon — and one who wrote explicitly for publication: Having heard the exiled Dutch minister of education on the annex’s radio, asking his countrymen to keep their journals as testimony, she set about revising her work for public consumption.

But in fact the diarist, 16 at the time of her death, was a disciplined worker and intuitive stylist, who deliberately added structural devices like the interlocutor “Kitty,” contributed a momentum to the story and fleshed out characters for the reader. “She had an ear for dialogue and for scene far beyond her years,” Lafon said. “The way she alternates between the general and particular, it’s a masterpiece.”

Jessie Kindig, the Yale University Press editor who published the book in English, admired Lafon’s analysis: “Lola’s not afraid of the fierce ambition and kind of ruthlessness — and I mean that in a really good sense — the writerly ruthlessness of Anne Frank.”

Lafon also realized she had never really confronted Anne Frank’s death — of typhus, in Bergen-Belsen, shortly before the camp’s liberation. “You want her to live and not have read the diary. We want her innocence preserved.

We like an ending that does that.”

But the 10 hours Lafon spent alone in the annex proved a revelation. “You feel like you’re in a place that is a shelter and a trap,” said Lafon. “And a tomb. But it’s empty.”

Lafon found herself thinking of Otto Frank, the lone survivor of the family, who made the decision to publish his daughter’s diaries. In the Netherlands, Lafon says, she learned that many people questioned his actions. “They thought he could have hidden them better, done something different, left Holland — but how?”

At some point during the night she started thinking about her grandparents, refugees from Poland who moved to France very young. “For them, France was Camus, and it was culture,” she said. Committed communists, they were drawn to the country’s history of philosophy and humanism. “My grandfather worshipped France. And two years after arriving, he was ordered to wear a yellow star.”

People, she said, “idealize things with a tragic hope. And I see the parallel with Otto, hoping that the Netherlands would remain

neutral — and staying.”

Lafon had always found her grandparents’ neuroses, their grim intensity, alienating. “But now I understand, they were crazy with anxiety. All their family was killed at Auschwitz.”

Perpetual outsiders in the country they idealized, her grandparents had no photos and few personal possessions — they had lost it all during the war. “Now I understand that I have seen refugees with no one left,” she said.

Lafon’s book ends with a confrontation even more deeply buried, but one that casts light on questions of loss, of youth, of identity.

Although she’s known success before, the book’s reception — it’s sold more than 150,000 copies and won multiple prizes — has surprised Lafon. “What I feared the most when it was published was that the book would only speak to people of my background,” she said.

“And what’s overwhelming me is that I see people who say, ‘This is my grandmother’ — and they came from Algeria.”

Still, she thinks she understands why the book resonates: “It was about absence, and it was about loss. How do you grow up and live with a void? With people that you will never be able to mourn because you don’t know where they are? It’s like a never-ending sentence. The sentence has no full stop.”

Venezuela events, jobs data set to jolt stocks as 2026 kicks off T

he first full trading week of the new year could shake ‌the ​U.S. stock market out of its winter holiday slumber ‌as investors parse the rapid developments in Venezuela while monthly jobs data looms.

Stocks slid in the final session of 2025, with the benchmark S&P 5 ​ 00 falling into a monthly loss for December.

But the index still climbed more than 16% in 2025, its third straight year of double-digit percentage gains, while the Cboe Volatility index was just above its ‍lows for the year.

Trading volumes were thin at the ​end of 2025, but the new year could get off to an eventful start.

In dramatic weekend events, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was putting Venezuela under temporary American control after t​he United States captured ⁠President Nicolas Maduro.

Investors said such developments in the oil-rich country raised the concerns around geopolitical risks, and that any oil price volatility would ripple through assets.

Investors also await more drama with a U.S. Supreme Court decision looming on Trump’s tariffs, along with his choice of a new Federal Reserve chair, and U.S. corporate earnings season is around the corner.

In the first session of 2026 on Friday, the S&P 500 posted a slim gain as semiconductor shares rallied.

Though the benchmark is near record highs, it is hovering around its late October level, said ‌Matthew Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak.

“The market is looking for direction,” Maley said. “We break out of these ranges and that’s going to give people either a lot of ​confidence ‌or a lot of concern, depending on ‍which way it breaks.”

The employment data due on January 9 could provide a jolt either way. Concerns over weakness in the labor market prompted the Fed to lower interest rates at each of its last three meetings of 2025, as the U.S. central bank juggles its goals of full employment and contained inflation.

Lower rates have supported equities, but the extent of further cuts in 2026 is unclear. Fed officials were divided over the path for monetary policy at the most recent meeting in December. Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% annual target.

With the benchmark rate at 3.5% to 3.75%, Fed funds futures suggest little chance of a cut at the next meeting in

“Softening in the labor market has really given the Fed good cover to change their ​outlook about reducing rates,” said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at North Star Investment Management in Chicago.

At the same time, investors are wary that an overly weak report could signal more economic concern than markets now anticipate.

Employment for December is expected to have climbed by 55,000 jobs, a Reuters poll showed. Pay-

rolls rose by 64,000 in November, but unemployment of 4.6% was at a more than four-year high.

“If (employment) starts turning down in any kind of meaningful way, that’s going to signal that the recession is a lot closer than people think,” Maley said.

Other data next week includes manufacturing and services sector activity, along with job openings and other labor market data. Economic releases are returning to more normal schedules after a 43-day government shutdown that delayed or canceled many key reports.

A closely watched report on inflation trends, the monthly U.S. consumer price index, is due out on January 13.

Trump plunges the US into a new era of risk in Venezuela

resident Donald Trump’s declaration Saturday that the United States planned to “run” Venezuela for an unspecified period, issuing orders to its government and exploiting its vast oil reserves, plunged the United States into a risky new era in which it will seek economic and political dominance over a nation of roughly 30 million people.

Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago private club just hours after Nicolás Maduro, the leader of Venezuela, and his wife were seized from their bedroom by U.S. forces, Trump told reporters that Delcy Rodríguez, who served as Maduro’s vice president, would hold power in Venezuela as long as she “does what we want.”

Rodríguez, however, showed little public interest in doing the Americans’ bidding. In a national address, she accused Washington of invading her country under false pretenses and asserted that Maduro was still Venezuela’s head of state. “What is being done to Venezuela is a barbarity,” she said.

Trump and his top national security advisers carefully avoided describing their plans for Venezuela as an occupation, akin to what the United States did after defeating Japan, or toppling Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Instead, they vaguely sketched out an arrangement that sounded like a mix of economic coercion and a guardianship over the country: The United States will provide a vision for how Venezuela should be run and will expect the interim government to carry that out in a transition period, under the threat of further military intervention.

By Sunday morning, with Trump’s repeated declaration that the administration would “run” Venezuela ricocheting around foreign capitals, Marco Rubio, the secretary of state and national security adviser, complained that people were “fixating” on the president’s declaration.

“It’s not ‘running,’” he said, clearly distancing himself from Trump’s words. “It’s running policy, the policy with regards to this.”

He maintained that rather than administer the country’s operations, it would be enough to keep a quarantine on oil shipments until the post-Maduro government acted the way Washington demanded. “That’s a tremendous amount of leverage that will continue to be in place until we see changes, not just to further the national interest of the United States, which is No. 1, but also that lead to a better future for the people of Venezuela,” he said in an interview with “Face the Nation” on CBS

On Saturday, even after Rodríguez contradicted Trump, Rubio said he was withholding judgment.

“We’re going to make decisions based on their actions and their deeds in the days and weeks to come,” he said in an interview with The New York Times. “We think they’re going to have some unique and historic opportunities to do a great service for the country, and we hope that they’ll accept that opportunity.”

Rubio is usually careful to avoid showing any daylight between his positions and the president’s. But he had little choice Sunday because Trump, asked directly Saturday who, exactly, would be running the country, named Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine. He said the “people that are standing right behind me, we’re going to be running it,” he said, pointing to all three men.

Trump also suggested Saturday that while there were no American troops on the ground now, there would be a “second wave” of military action if the United States ran into resistance, either on the ground or from Venezuelan government officials.

“We’re not afraid of boots on the ground,” Trump said, a comment Rubio echoed Sunday, while insisting there is no plan for a physical occupation of the country.

Trump paired that with a declaration that a key American goal was to regain access

to oil rights that he has repeatedly said had been “stolen” from the United States. With those statements, the president opened a new chapter in American nation building.

It is one in which he hopes to influence every major political decision in Venezuela by the presence of an armada just offshore, and perhaps to intimidate others in the region. He repeated a warning to the president of Colombia, another country targeted by the administration for its role in drug trafficking, to “watch his ass.”

Trump’s actions Saturday cast America back to a past era of gunboat diplomacy, when the United States used its military to grab territory and resources for its own benefit.

A year ago this week, he openly mused, also at Mar-a-Lago, about making Canada, Greenland and Panama parts of the United States. Now, after hanging in the White House a portrait of William McKinley, the tariff-loving president who presided over the military seizure of the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico, Trump said it was well within the rights of the United States to wrest from Venezuela resources that he believes had been wrongly taken from the hands of American corporations.

The U.S. operation, in seeking to assert control over a vast Latin American nation, has little precedent in recent decades, recalling the imperial U.S. military efforts of the 19th

and early 20th centuries in Mexico, Nicaragua and other countries.

Trump and his aides claimed they had a legal basis for the immediate action he ordered Friday, the extraterritorial rendition of Maduro. An indictment that dates to 2020 charged the Venezuelan leader with a series of acts related to drug trafficking. A refreshed indictment was published Saturday, one that included Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores.

But that indictment only deals with Maduro’s alleged crimes. It did not provide a legal basis for taking control of the country, as the U.S. president declared he was doing.

Trump was unapologetic about taking that step, and in his justification, he showed he had given much thought to the oil industry.

“Venezuela unilaterally seized and sold American oil, American assets and American platforms, costing us billions and billions of dollars,” he said of resources that were being pumped out of Venezuelan bedrock. “They did this a while ago, but we never had a president that did anything about it. They took all of our property.” He added: “The socialist regime stole it from us during those previous administrations, and they stole it through force.”

Now, he made clear, he was taking it back, and Americans would be compensated before Venezuelans became, he predicted, “rich.”

But that left many open questions. Will the United States need an occupying military force to protect the oil sector while the Americans and others rebuild it? Will the United States run the courts, and determine who pumps the oil?

Will it install a pliant government for some number of years, and what happens if a legitimate, democratic election is won by Venezuelans with a different vision for their country?

All of these questions, of course, could enmesh the United States into exactly the kind of “forever wars” which Trump’s MAGA base has warned against.

When pressed on that point, Trump dismissed it. He noted that he had been successful in killing the leader of Iran’s Quds Force, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, in January 2020. He cited the success for his attack on Iran’s major nuclear sites, burying its uranium stockpile.

But those were largely one-and-done attacks. They did not involve running a foreign nation, or dealing with the resistance that almost always accompanies an effort like that.

For much of the 20th century, the United States intervened militarily in smaller countries in the Caribbean and Central America. But Venezuela is twice the size of Iraq, with challenges that may prove just as complex.

‘What will happen tomorrow?’ Venezuelans fear chaos after US attack

ike many Venezuelans, José, an entrepreneur based in Mexico City, voted against Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela’s election in 2024. He was dismayed when Maduro clung to power, amid accusations of widespread fraud and nationwide opposition protests. But when he awoke Saturday to the news that Maduro had been ousted in a U.S. military operation, he felt only dread.

“It is bittersweet,” said José, 35, who withheld his last name fearing reprisal against his family in Venezuela from the government.

He was worried the majority of his family, who has always voted against Maduro, will experience further political and economic instability, upending his own plans to return to Venezuela.

“The first thing on my mind isn’t, ‘We are free and I’m so happy,’” he said. “It is, ‘What will happen tomorrow?’ Maduro is just one part of a much bigger machine.”

Maduro was a deeply unpopular leader and was accused of stealing the election in 2024. An independent exit poll and a tally of votes by the opposition appeared to show that he lost decisively, 66% to 31%.

“Nobody wants an invasion,” said Beatrice Rangel, who was the chief of staff for Venezuela’s former president Carlos Andrés Pérez. “No one wants a foreign power in their country. I have always been against such interventions.”

Rangel said that in that posting she had tried to convince Panama’s president, Manuel Noriega, to resign. Her government was opposed to the U.S. coup that overthrew him.

But with Venezuela today, she said, “There was no other way to remove Maduro without the U.S.” But the Trump administration’s incursion into Venezuela recalled the many U.S.backed coups that have destabilized Latin America in recent decades.

“This has been my fear from Day 1, that Trump thought this was going to be easy, that once Maduro goes there will be pixie dust, rainbows and everyone is happy,” said Brian Naranjo, who served as the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas from 2014 to 2018.

José and many other Venezuelans have wanted Maduro out, but they worry that the United States has no plan for a peaceful transition of power and that the South American nation could descend into chaos — with a

collection of regional guerrilla groups biting off territory and rival government factions fighting for power.

Many Venezuelans who oppose Maduro are also wary of Delcy Rodríguez, the vice president who Trump said had been sworn in as interim president Saturday, but who appeared loyal to Maduro in her remarks the same day.

And the fact that the U.S. intervention left Maduro’s inner circle in office fueled concern that his government would not go without a fight.

One teacher in the city of Maracaibo, whose brother was killed by pro-government paramilitary forces, said she had cried with joy when she heard Maduro had been ousted. But her delight was short-lived, ending when she learned that Rodríguez would remain at the helm.

Indeed, Trump has barely spoken about democracy since U.S. forces captured Maduro in an early morning raid Saturday, nor has he laid out a detailed transition plan. He was, however, adamant that the administration will receive a more lucrative deal on Venezuelan oil.

That added to the fury among supporters of Maduro’s government.

“Anyone who celebrates an invasion of the gringos is a traitor,” said Alberto González, 42, a government worker in Sucre, a state on the northeast coast of Venezuela.

“They’re going to steal everything from us and humiliate us,” he said. “The country is independent, and we cannot accept Donald Trump coming here to tell us what to do and kidnapping the president.”

To many Venezuelans and analysts, Trump’s focus on oil reserves draws similarities to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

President George W. Bush declared “mission accomplished” just six weeks after the invasion — only for Iraq to descend into a brutal civil war that killed thousands of Iraqis and U.S. troops.

On Saturday while addressing reporters, Trump said that the United States will “run” Venezuela, but the country is roughly twice as large as California and is filled with mountains and dense forests. Analysts say that the United States does not have sufficient forces in the Caribbean to prop up a Venezuelan government of Washington’s choosing, despite Trump’s threats to do so.

And compared to the jubilation that greeted U.S. troops on the streets of Baghdad after Saddam Hussein’s fall in 2003, the roads of

José Villalobos, a security guard who was a strong supporter of Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez, who had led the country’s socialist-inspired “Bolivarian revolution,” said that he had cried when he heard of Maduro’s arrest.

“I’m afraid the revolution will end and that the rich won’t want to help the poor anymore,” he said of the movement spearheaded by Chávez.

Villalobos has been receiving financial support from the Venezuelan government and from a community council, he said, and he is worried about rising food prices.

“I know food is expensive and that we’re struggling,” he said, “but I’m a rev-

olutionary, and as Commander Chávez said, nobody here surrenders.”

Many Venezuelans inside the country may be too afraid to publicly cheer Maduro’s capture given the uncertainty of what happens next. On Saturday, Rodríguez gave a speech defiant of the Trump administration, saying that Maduro remained the “only president” of Venezuela.

Regional threats also loom. A prominent Colombian rebel group is active in the border region of Venezuela and could destabilize the country if there is a power vacuum in Caracas, according to former U.S. diplomats and analysts.

“What is the plan? Key regime people are still in place,” Naranjo said, adding, “this lack of certainty favors the regime that has been opposed to democracy, not the opposition that has embraced democracy.”

The Venezuelan oil industry Trump is planning to revive

enezuela’s oil industry would “make a lot of money” with the United States behind it, President Donald Trump said Saturday in a news conference to confirm the capture of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, who is facing federal drugs and weapons charges.

“We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country,” Trump said.

He said the Venezuelan oil industry had been “a total bust,” for a long time, adding, “They were pumping almost nothing by comparison to what they could have been pumping.”

Trump appears to be counting heavily on U.S. intervention in the oil industry to help transform Venezuela, a proposition that could prove to be complicated and expensive.

How much oil does Venezuela produce?

Venezuela claims to have more than 300 billion barrels in the ground, the largest reserves of oil of any country. But it struggles to produce about 1 million barrels a day, or around 1% of global production.

In addition, much of Venezuela’s oil is extra heavy, making it polluting and expensive to process.

What is the state of the oil industry in Venezuela?

The industry has seen some recovery in recent years, but output is well below the more than 2 million barrels a day that Venezuela was producing in the early 2010s.

Are any Western oil companies involved there?

Chevron is the main Western oil company still operating in the country and produces about a quarter of Venezuela’s oil. Early in this century, when other companies were forced out, Chevron stayed, figuring that conditions might eventually improve.

Roughly half of Chevron’s production is exported to the United States.

On Saturday, Chevron said it was trying to ensure the safety of its employees and its operations in the country after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested and removed

in the U.S. military action.

The oil giant, based in Houston, has conducted operations in Venezuela since 1923 and has maintained five onshore and offshore production projects there.

“With more than a century in Venezuela, we support a peaceful, lawful transition that promotes stability and economic recovery,” said Kevin Slagle, a Chevron spokesperson.

“We’re prepared to work constructively with the U.S. government during this period, leveraging our experience and presence to strengthen U.S. energy security.”

Later Saturday, Chevron said it had given an incorrect statement and issued a new one that removed mention of the U.S. government, saying: “We continue to operate in full compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.”

What would U.S. control of the country’s oil production mean?

In theory, if U.S. oil companies were given greater access in Venezuela, they could help gradually turn the industry around. “But it’s

not going to be a straightforward proposition,” said Richard Bronze, head of geopolitics at Energy Aspects.

Analysts say increasing Venezuelan production will not be cheap. Energy Aspects estimated that adding another half a million barrels a day of production would cost $10 billion and take about two years.

Major increases might require “tens of billions of dollars over multiple years,” the firm said.

The overthrow of the Venezuelan government may offer opportunities for American oil companies, but they could also find themselves dragged into a messy situation, industry analysts say.

Pressure from Trump could “force them to play a quasi-governmental role on the capacity building and development front,” Helima Croft, head of commodities at the investment bank RBC Capital Markets, wrote Saturday in an investment note.

She added that reducing military influence over the oil industry and the broader economy “could prove challenging.”

How will this affect oil prices?

Trump’s intervention in Venezuela is bound to send jitters through the oil markets, but analysts say that a major price jump is unlikely.

Venezuela is a relatively small producer and many analysts calculate that the oil market is currently oversupplied. Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded at $60.80 a barrel on Friday, near its lows for the year.

After Washington conducted its operation to remove Maduro, Third Bridge, a research firm, said in a note that it “did not see these events immediately impacting the price of crude oil or the cost of gasoline drivers see at the pump.”

In one study, people who walked through an arboretum performed better on cognitive tests than those who walked through an urban medical campus.

The arboretum group also had less brain activity immediately after the walk, followed by bigger spikes while they were performing an attention task. People who have hearing loss also tend to withdraw from social activities that could keep their minds engaged.

To protect your brain’s ability to process sensory signals, use earplugs or noise-protection earmuffs when you’re around loud sounds, said Dr. Elizabeth Bevins, a neurologist at UC San Diego Health. In addition, people older than 50, and anyone frequently exposed to loud noises, should get a hearing test every one to three years, she said.

If falling asleep is an issue, you may want to try a simple activity called “cognitive shuffling.”

Start by taking a random word — “Pluto,” for example. Then think of as many words as you can that begin with the same first letter, so: “Plane, poodle, play, peaches.” Take a second or so to visualize each word.

When you run out of “P” words, move on to the next letter of your original word (in this case, “L”) and do the same thing.

The task is meant to distract you from the thoughts that may be impeding sleep — without activating your brain too much.

This crocodile relative was one of dinosaurs’ most fearsome predators

A

n apex predator prowled the forests of Patagonia a few million years before the age of dinosaurs came to an end. As large as a Siberian tiger, it padded on four legs, with powerful jaws and teeth the shape of steak knives.

But this hunter was no dinosaur. In a paper published recently in the journal PLOS One, researchers announced the discovery of Kostensuchus, a large, land-dwelling crocodile. The find shows that predatory dinosaurs in South America faced stiff competition from their crocodilian cousins well into the last days of their reign.

“They were not only abundant,” said Fernando Novas, a paleontologist at the Bernardino Rivadavia Natural Sciences Argentine Museum and an author of the paper; they were also large enough to fight dinosaurs like megaraptors and dromaeosaurs over prey.

The remains of the ferocious crocodile were discovered in March 2020 in Santa Cruz, a province in Argentina. The cold, windswept rocks there formed 6 million years before the end of the Cretaceous period, Novas said. He and colleagues had already found traces of a long-necked dinosaur and long-armed, hookclawed predatory dinosaurs there. While walking the plains, members of the expedition noticed a heavy block of rock containing hints of a crocodilian skull.

The remains belonged to a lineage of terrestrial crocodiles known as pierosaurids, which tend to have extraordinarily incomplete remains, said Cecily Nicholl, a specialist on land crocodiles at University College London who was not involved in the study. But when

Based on comparisons with living crocodilians, the complete animal would have been around 11 1/2 feet long and weighed 551 pounds, the team estimated. While the animal was smaller than the largest contemporary crocodiles, its wide, powerful jaws and long, flat, serrated teeth were comparable to those of a big predatory dinosaur or a modern Komodo dragon. They would have been adept hunters, including of medium-size dinosaurs.

ly from families that had evolved a semiaquatic lifestyle. But crocodiles took a different trajectory in South America and Africa, where several families walked with their limbs held under their bodies — like mammals and dinosaurs — rather than with the sprawling stance of their waterloving cousins.

The team’s analysis of Kostensuchus’ hips suggested that it held its legs in slightly more of a sprawl than some related land crocs, suggesting that, while it was a capable land predator, it and other pierosaurids might have been relatively comfortable in water.

That points to the possibility that different families of crocodilians might have independently evolved toward more aquatic lifestyles

Skeletal anatomy alone makes it difficult to tell whether an animal like Kostensuchus spent much time in the water, or whether it was a land-dwelling member of an increasingly aquatically inclined family, said Jeremy Martin, a paleontologist at the University of Lyon in France who was not involved with the study.

Martin suggested that a study of the stable isotopes within the bones, which have been used to help pinpoint diet and climatic conditions in fossil animals, could reveal more about the newly discovered crocodilian’s lifestyle and environment.

Martin also said that the team might have overestimated the animal’s body length, noting that the researchers’ suggested proportions might not match other — admittedly more fragmentary — specimens.

Either way, Kostensuchus was larger than many other pierosaurids, and, as the southernmost and latest-known member of the group, it fills an important gap in their family tree, Novas said.

It also shows that terrestrial crocodiles of different lineages regularly became large enough to challenge big predatory dinosaurs across South America, an ecological dynamic that would linger even after each group lost a majority of its species in the Cretaceous extinction. As recently as 20 million years ago, enormous land crocodiles still competed with large terror birds across the South American plains.

In a world of running crocodiles of every size, Novas said, Kostensuchus and its later cousins were equivalent to lions.

In Norway, skiing through a winter wonderland

perched at 3,300 feet overlooking snowcapped mountains. We quickly learned that Norwegians value the gastronomic experience almost as much as the skiing. We were greeted by a long central buffet featuring salmon in just about every form: baked, poached, smoked, grilled, herb encrusted, rolled, lox and gravlax.

But first, waffles We headed out the next morning on the trail, which conveniently started at our hotel. The snowcovered Rondane Mountains rose up around us, resembling a landscape of soft vanilla ice cream.

My body fell into the familiar cadence of crosscountry skiing, arms and legs moving in rhythm to propel me forward. I was in a snowy reverie — until waffles snapped me out of it.

An hour into our ski tour, we stopped at Smuksjoseter, a snowbound mountain lodge alongside the trail. Inside, I was greeted by the smell of coffee and fresh vafler, the traditional heart-shaped Norwegian waffles served with a dollop of cream and lingonberry jam. Waffles here are more than food: They are an expression of kos, the Norwegian notion of simple pleasure. The collective will of our die-hard crew of nine skiers melted like butter on a warm waffle as we all indulged.

We headed back out on the Troll Trail to our next destination, a hotel about 12 miles away. We skied across a windswept plateau following poles planted every 100 feet or so to mark the way.

Blowing snow had obscured the groomed ski track, slowing our progress, so we were relieved to see a large grooming machine approach to restore fresh grooves for us to ski in.

We glided about 6 miles downhill and soon found ourselves on the thoroughfare of the small mountain town of Mysuseter. We skied past people out walking or skiing with their dogs, whose paws were clad in protective bootees.

That night we stayed in a former dairy barn that had been converted into comfortable guest rooms. We turned in early to rest up for the most dramatic day of the Troll Trail, skiing 20 miles across the high plateau of Rondane National Park, Norway’s oldest national park.

A gentleman from France told me, “We come each year because it is the best cross-country skiing on the continent, and the most reliable,” noting the 3,000-foot elevation.

There was another draw: the food stations brimming with venison steak, five varieties of salmon, salads and a dessert table featuring lingonberry tart and pecan pie. Waffles with cloudberry jam, a delicacy of northern Norway, were available at all meals.

Luxury in the mountains The next morning, we traded the drama of the high mountains for the easy flow of crosscountry skiing on sun-soaked rolling trails. The towering peaks gave way to softly rounded hills.

In the morning, the snow had a sparkling glaze, as if mischievous trolls had spent the night strewing diamonds across the ground.

Our day ended at the warm wood-paneled Vetabua cabin stocked with freeze-dried and canned food where we cooked and played card games. This bit of roughing it provided motivation for our longest day, skiing 23 miles to Pellestova, one of Norway’s premier cross-country ski resorts.

The Pellestova Hotel and its 185-mile trail network are the crown jewel of the Troll Trail. Perched imperiously on a hill with six groomed ski tracks radiating outward, the sleek black building constructed of wood, stone and glass is the hub of an interconnected network of world-class ski trails that extends for hundreds of miles through the countryside. The general manager, Per Christian Nilseng, said that the elegant hotel, which opened in 1946, has been renovated in a style known as nedpa jorda luksus, or down-to-earth luxury.

We finished our day at the hotel bar overlooking a glowing vista. I sipped a Nuet spritz, a refreshing drink made with aquavit, lemonade and sparkling wine, followed by a delicious dinner of delicate flaky arctic char. I could not conjure a more alluring Nordic dreamland.

Ponce & Santurce win to even LBPRC semifinals at 1-1

T

he Ponce Lions and the Santurce Crabbers both notched victories Saturday night to even their respective Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC) postseason semifinal series at a game apiece.

Third baseman Emmanuel Rivera homered to help the Lions (Leones) to a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Giants (Gigantes) at Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium in Carolina.

Semifinal Series B is now tied at one win apiece.

The Lions’ victory was anchored in part in the team’s excellent selection of reinforcements for the postseason. Rivera went 3-for-3 with the home run, a double, three RBIs, and one run scored. On the mound, left-hander Brady Tedesco held the Giants’ lineup in check to earn the win, allowing no runs and four hits in his five and two-thirds innings of work.

The Lions took the lead in the first inning with Rivera’s long ball over the center field fence. According to “Trackman” -- the system that measures every pitch and every hit at Roberto Clemente Walker Stadium -- Rivera’s solo shot traveled a distance of 411 feet.

Two innings later, the Lions used small ball to manufacture a cluster of three runs. Import player Matt Batten led off the third inning with a single. Then, Aldemar Burgos laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance him to second base, and the Giants’ starter, Jonathan Bermúdez, walked Dalton Guthrie. Next, in a left-handed pitcher versus left-handed batter matchup, Jesmuel Valentín hit a triple to right field to clear the bases and increase Ponce’s lead to 3-0. In the next at-bat, Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to center field to send Valentín home with the

Lions’ fourth run.

In the bottom of the third, Giants leadoff hitter Gabriel Cancel hit a solo home run to left field, making the score 4-1.

The fifth run for the Lions again came off the bat of Rivera, who singled to make the score 5-1 in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Johnathan Rodríguez drove in the second run for Carolina.

The Giants had runners in scoring position in the ninth inning, but the Lions’ closer, Andrew Marrero, bore down to earn his first save of the postseason. The loss went to Bermúdez (0-1) after four runs were charged to him in his two and one-third innings of work.

Meanwhile, a five-run outburst in the eighth inning gave the Crabbers (Cangrejeros) a 6-2 victory over the Caguas Criollos in Caguas.

Semifinal Series A also is now tied at one win apiece.

What the fans at Yldefonso Solá Morales Stadium witnessed was a pitching duel between left-handed starters, Criollos veteran Héctor Santiago and the young Eduardo Rivera for the Crabbers. Santiago allowed one hit and struck out two batters in four and two-thirds innings. Rivera, meanwhile, gave up two hits and struck out eight batters in five innings.

Both teams had to wait until their starting pitchers left the mound to score their first runs of the game.

The Crabbers were the first to score, and they did so in a big way, on a home run to right field by Rubén Castro off righthander Anthony Maldonado at the start of the seventh inning.

Santurce went back to work in the eighth, loading the bases with one out before scoring a flurry of five runs. The first two runs came on a single by Shed Long Jr., while the other

Both semifinals were to continue Sunday night, at Francisco “Paquito” Montaner Stadium in Ponce and Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey.

Three Kings Day racing program at Camarero to include Best Jockeys Event

he Camarero Racetrack (Hipódromo Camarero) in Canóvanas will hold its traditional Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes) racing program on Tuesday, featuring 10 official races and cultural activities.

This year’s schedule includes the Puerto Rican Best Jockeys Event, which will bring together local riders and several internationally recognized figures.

For the first time, the program will include a Jockey Challenge among participating riders. Admission and parking will be free, and early arrivals -- 200 children and 200 adults -- will receive gifts and a commemorative poster signed by the jockThe Camarero Racetrack’s traditional Three Kings Day racing program on Tuesday will fea- eys.
