Guayama District senators demand impartial investigation in Arroyo

By THE STAR STAFF
Sens. Wilmer Reyes Berríos and Rafael Santos Ortiz, both representing Guayama District VI, urged Thursday that the allegations of workplace harassment and sexual harassment filed in the Municipality of Arroyo be addressed through a truly independent investigation, with zero interference and a clear commitment to publicize its results once the process is complete.
The allegations have been reported in some detail by numerous media outlets, generating concern among citizens about the seriousness with which the process will be handled.
“The allegations published by various media outlets are serious and affect public trust in municipal administration,” Reyes Berríos said. “Internal actions are not enough; an impartial investigation is required to guarantee security, transparency, and justice for all parties.”
Both senators, whose district covers 14 towns, including Arroyo, and parts of a 15th, insisted on the need for the municipality to request or allow the intervention of external entities with expertise in the matters in question, such as the Office of the Women’s Advocate, to ensure the correct application of the protocols and avoid any appearance of conflicts of interest.
“The residents of our district deserve to know that this process will be handled with the utmost seriousness,” Santos Ortiz stated. “Once the investigation is complete, a

report detailing the findings must be made public, while, of course, adhering to confidentiality regulations. Transparency is not optional; it is an obligation of public service. This is especially true when dealing with allegations that impact the peace of mind and confidence of Arroyo residents, who expect a serious, independent, and pressure-free process.”
The senators, both of whom were elected under the New Progressive Party banner, reiterated that their position does not respond to partisan considerations, but rather to the duty to ensure fair, correct and reliable processes in each municipality of the district and the island.
Arroyo Mayor Eric Bachier Román, who has been in office since 2013, is affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party (PDP). Earlier this week the PDP suspended Bachier Román from his positions within the party after the two aforementioned complaints were filed against him in the municipality, according to local reports.
Preliminary hearing against teenager accused in fatal stabbing suspended due to jurisdictional dispute
he preliminary hearing against Anthonieska Avilés Cabrera, who is charged with murder and weapons violations, was suspended Thursday at the Aibonito Judicial Center after her defense, led by attorneys Rocío Revelles and Athelyn Jiménez of the Legal Aid Society, filed a motion to dismiss alleging lack of jurisdiction.
The defense presented the motion during the start of the necessity hearing, which was to assess whether a minor witness should testify via closed-circuit television or in person.
Avilés is accused in the stabbing death of 16-year-old Gabriela Nicole Pratts Rosario following an end-of-the-summer public street festival in Aibonito in August. Avilés was 17 at the time of the incident.
The attorneys argued that the adult court lacks jurisdiction
because, at the time of the events, Avilés was a minor and had a cognitive level equivalent to that of a child of approximately 10 years old, according to psychometric evaluations from the Department of Education. That argument led to the immediate interruption of the proceedings to allow the prosecution to respond in writing.
Judge Cristina Córdova Ponce granted the Public Prosecutor’s Office until next Monday at noon to present its position, while the court scheduled an argumentative hearing for next Tuesday at 2 p.m. As a result, the preliminary hearing originally scheduled for Thursday was postponed and rescheduled for Dec. 11, 15 and 17 at 10 a.m. in Courtroom 004 in Aibonito.
The hearing on the need for a hearing, which also began Thursday morning, was likewise suspended and moved to next Thursday at 9 a.m., pending the court’s resolution of the jurisdictional issue.

Vector Control Unit, UPR Medical Sciences Campus to create graduate program in public health entomology
By THE STAR STAFF
The Puerto Rico Vector Control Unit and the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus signed an agreement Thursday to develop a graduate program in public health entomology at the Graduate School of Public Health, with the goal of strengthening local preparedness for vector-borne diseases.
“This Memorandum of Understanding positions the [Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research] Trust and the Unit as catalysts in the development of local talent in public health entomology, aligned with our mission to promote science and research in Puerto Rico,” said Lucy Crespo, CEO of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, in a written statement.
The Vector Control Unit noted that the curriculum will be aligned with professional certifications recognized by specialized entities and that it will serve as an academic collaborator for graduate students at the campus. Grayson Brown, executive

director of the Unit, said the approach will strengthen professionalization linked to vector surveillance and control.
He said the agreement includes the development of a professional certification and graduate courses in public health entomology, as well as internships, mentoring and hands-on experiences for students. Brown added that the collaboration seeks to promote joint research and scientific publications.
Medical Sciences Campus Chancellor Myrna Quiñones Feliciano stressed that the project “lays the foundations for the establishment of a graduate program in public health entomology” and strengthens the training of professionals capable of responding to emerging challenges in mosquito-borne diseases.
According to the Unit, the effort will allow the development of specialized talent and expand the island’s institutional capacity in the face of diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya, in addition to positioning Puerto Rico as a regional benchmark in graduate training in the discipline.
Trump administration appeals court ruling on fiscal board dismissals
By THE STAR STAFF
The Trump administration has escalated its fight over control of the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico, filing an appeal with the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. The appeal seeks to overturn a ruling by a federal judge in Puerto Rico that temporarily reinstated several former board members, finding that their removal violated due process under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA), the 2016 law that created the board.
The appeal targets a decision by U.S. District Judge María Antongiorgi Jordán, who concluded that the White House failed to demonstrate “just cause” for the dismissals carried out in August and did not give the affected members a chance to respond before being removed. Her ruling allowed the former members to return on an interim basis while the underlying lawsuit moves forward -- a situation the administration now hopes to reverse.
Among those ousted was former board chair Arthur J. González, along with others who claim they were abruptly dismissed without the documentation required by PROMESA. Their reinstatement has broadened the dispute beyond membership
status to a larger question: how far does the federal executive branch’s authority extend over the board’s composition and its oversight role in Puerto Rico?
For the Trump administration, regaining control of the board would open the door to appointing new members aligned with its fiscal priorities. For Puerto Rico, the stakes are high. The oversight board wields sweeping power over government budgets, fiscal plans and debt restructuring -- including the contentious adjustment plan for the bankrupt Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. Any shift in the board’s makeup could significantly reshape the island’s economic future.
Fiscal board approves new LNF supply deal with New Fortress
By THE STAR STAFF
The Financial Oversight and Control Board approved the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement between the Puerto Rico government and New Fortress Energy (NFE) on Thursday, following a review of the terms of the LNG Toll Agreement requested last week.
“This new agreement that we reached with NFE and that the Board is approving today is part of the energy transformation we are promoting, which includes diversifying energy sources and ensuring continuity of supply, among other things, to stabilize the system and with the goal of providing residents and businesses with cost reductions on their electricity bills,” Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said in a written statement.
The oversight board had granted conditional approval on
Nov. 28, subject to technical clarifications regarding the terms of the contract. The Public-Private Partnerships Authority addressed those requirements on Nov. 29, allowing for the final validation of the agreement on Thursday.
According to information released by the government, the approved contract represents a substantial reduction in costs and duration compared to the preliminary proposal submitted by NFE in 2025. The new agreement establishes:
* A base term of seven years, with an option for three additional years, instead of the 15 years originally proposed.
* An estimated cost of $4 billion, representing a reduction of some $16 billion compared to the initial proposal.
* Reductions in supply charges, including a 22% decrease for temporary units (from $10.29 to $7.95) and maintaining the price at $6.50 for the San Juan 5 and 6 units.
According to official data, the new rates would allow for savings of more than $54 million annually and more than $375 million accumulated over the term of the contract, which would directly impact the cost of generation.
The agreement also eliminates the exclusivity clause that prevented the island government from diversifying its natural gas suppliers. The modification will allow the government to purchase fuel from other suppliers in the event of interruptions or defaults by NFE.
The new contractual structure incorporates operational protections in bankruptcy or receivership scenarios, guaranteeing the government’s right to use the dock, the regasification infrastructure, and the gas distribution system.
Likewise, if NFE is unable to supply fuel, the government may use the San Juan terminal through a tolling agreement of $0.50/MMBtu to ensure continuity of service.

Humacao hospital closes, leaving 150 people jobless
By THE STAR STAFF
Health Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero has confirmed the closure of Hope Medical Center in Humacao due to non-compliance with legal and regulatory provisions, leaving 150 people without a job.
The closing is part of a broader hospital crisis on the island stemming from persistent financial losses, delayed payments from insurance companies and staff shortages, leading to a precarious financial situation in 17 institutions.
Ramos stated that he had previously requested information from the hospital, but they had not responded. It was discovered Wednesday that the hospital failed to process payroll and admit patients.
A hospital employee told Walo Radio: “The Medical Center released our payroll checks at 6:40 p.m., but they bounced. We were unable to cash them until Wednesday, November 19. On Monday, November 17, the administrator
resigned, and the hospital is now operating with an interim administrator who is also the operations director, while the medical director is responsible for clinical operations.”
“During the week of November 17-21, they instructed us to empty the intensive care unit and partially close the operating room,” she added.
The employee added that the hospital currently does not have a patient census, and only the emergency room is operational, with the payroll for Nov. 28 still unpaid.
She stated that upper management has not provided any answers, creating a state of uncertainty among the staff.
“All they say is that the board isn’t responding and that they’ll work on the payroll tomorrow, yet nothing has happened,” the employee said. “Nobody dares to speak out for fear of reprisals, but we’re desperate.”
In response to the complaints, Ramos noted that regulations do not apply to a temporary closure letter and assured that he would not allow anyone to violate the law.

“The people of Humacao have nothing to worry about; there are two other hospitals in the area, so services will still be available,” the official emphasized. “Our inspectors will visit the hospital today to prepare a report for my decision. Let it be clear that we will not hesitate to ensure compliance with the law.”
Fiscal board extends debt maturity of Bayamón hospital
By THE STAR STAFF
The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico has approved a request to extend the maturity date of a $35 million bond issuance tied to the purchase and rehabilitation of HIMA San Pablo Bayamón Hospital.
The extension, granted under Section 207 of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA), moves the current maturity date from Dec. 1 of this year to June 1, 2026.
The approval occurs amid a hospital crisis impacting some 17 health care facilities. This week, a hospital in Humacao shut down leaving 150 people out of work.
The request was submitted by the Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority (AAFAF by its initials in Spanish) on Nov. 19,, on behalf of the Puerto Rico Industrial, Tourist, Educational, Medical, and Environmental Control Facilities Financing Authority (AFICA). The bonds, origi-

Orlando C. Rivera Berríos announced earlier this week an interagency transfer of $882,169 from the fiscal year 2024 Emergency Reserve Fund to the Municipality of Aguas Buenas to address damages caused by flooding from torrential rains between April and May of this year. Although the municipality had received previous funds, an assessment of additional damages not included in the municipality’s original request was still pending. Those funds were identified by the OMB starting in June of this year. The additional transfer was made possible after the completion of a validation process of damage estimates and final,
reviewed documentation submitted by the municipality to comply with the legal and fiscal requirements governing the use of emergency funds and the requirements of the Financial Oversight and Management Board.
“This action reflects our ongoing commitment to the recovery and stability of municipalities following significant weather events,” Rivera Berríos said. “Aguas Buenas was one of the municipalities most affected by the floods, and this financial support will allow us to address its needs. We have emphasized that municipalities must comply with all requirements so that we can complete the disbursement of funds with the urgency it deserves and ensure the proper use of resources to guarantee that the affected communities receive the attention they need.”
-- Sociedad Española de Auxilio Mutuo y Beneficiencia de Puerto Rico and Hospital Español Auxilio Mutuo de Puerto Rico Inc. -- and to fund urgent repairs and maintenance.
According to the oversight board, the only change to the Series 2023 Bonds is the extension of the maturity date; all other terms and conditions remain unchanged. The additional time will allow the Obligated Group to finalize a comprehensive capital expenditure and long-term financing plan for the hospital, which must be submitted to AFICA, AAFAF and the oversight board by June 1, 2026.
The board reiterated that repayment of the bonds is not guaranteed by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or any of its agencies, and that collateral and repayment obligations rest solely with the Obligated Group.
“We look forward to continuing our work with AAFAF to accomplish the requirements and goals of PROMESA for the benefit of Puerto Rico and its people,” the oversight board said in its statement.

From welcome to worry: Afghans in the US face uncertainty and backlash
By MIRIAM JORDAN
In the frenzied American exit from Afghanistan, Obaidullah Durani, a fighter pilot who had been trained by U.S. forces, was scrambling to get his family out, too. His daughter, Hela, was hoisted over the fence by a Marine at the Kabul airport as the family rushed to make a departing plane. But Durani’s wife, Shafaro, was separated from him and their two children and never made it onto an evacuation flight.
Allowed to enter the United States through a special program for people who worked with American forces, Durani settled in Arizona, with his infant daughter and toddler son. He had never changed a diaper in his life, he said, but he was now a single father juggling parenting with delivery jobs. Yet he felt safe in the United States and hopeful that the family would eventually be reunited.
That all changed with the deadly attack on National Guard members last week in Washington, D.C., which authorities say was carried out by a 29-year-old Afghan man.
Following the attack, President Donald Trump directed his administration to suspend all Afghan immigration cases and immigration agents have been ordered to track down nearly 2,000 Afghans who have what are known as final deportation orders but are not in detention.
That threatens the lives built by the Duranis and thousands of other Afghan families in the United States.
Trump has seized on the shooting to intensify his broader anti-immigration campaign, and he has sought to depict the attack and the man charged, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, as evidence of a dangerously broken system he inherited from President Joe Biden.
“We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country,” the president said on Truth Social. “If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them.”
All told, about 200,000 Afghans who were considered wartime allies of the United States have been admitted to the United States since the chaotic pullout that concluded the 20-year occupation. Many had worked alongside U.S. troops in combat or on bases; others were employed by organizations — including The New York Times and other media outlets — as well as institutions that supported U.S. operations or interests.

Authorities work near an area where two members of the National Guard were shot in Washington, Nov. 26, 2025. The Trump administration is prioritizing the detention of Afghan nationals who have previously been ordered to leave the United States, part of a broader crackdown on refugees from Afghanistan after last week’s shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington, according to internal documents reviewed by The New York Times. (Eric Lee/The New York Times)
The rhetoric and the threats from Trump have stirred panic in communities that are home to many Afghan arrivals, including the Phoenix area where about 4,000 have settled since 2021.
On Monday, after school pickup, Durani was among dozens of Afghans who crowded the Arizona Refugee Center, a nonprofit in Mesa, outside Phoenix, seeking answers.
He and his children have a green card interview scheduled for Dec. 17. He had many questions: Would the interview still take place. And, if it did, could his family end up being detained? Deported? What about his wife, whose process to enter the United States was now at a standstill?
“Every Afghan is worried,” said Durani, who delivers Amazon packages. “They shouldn’t punish all of us because of one person.”
“I’m here contributing, working, paying my taxes,” he said. “This is a country of laws and democracy; the man has been arrested.”
The center’s co-founders, Julianna Larsen and Robin Peterson, fielded a barrage of calls even as they coped with the people walking in for help.
“Right now, if you leave the country, you might not be allowed back,” Peterson told one caller, who had plans to visit family members in Pakistan. “It’s too risky, even if you have a green card.”
Mirwais Daudzai, who also visited the center, works at the Phoenix airport assisting passengers who require wheelchairs. He greets
them with a smile, asks about their journeys and eases them into the chairs. When travelers learn that he fled to the United States from his native Afghanistan, he said many tell him they are glad he is safe in America. Some slip him a generous tip.
That kindness seemed to vanish last week, Daudzai said, after the deadly attack in Washington and the anti-immigrant measures announced by the government.
On Thanksgiving, the day after the shooting, a traveler was about to hand Daudzai a $20 bill but shoved it into her pocket instead after hearing he was from Afghanistan.
It happened again over the long holiday weekend, Daudzai said. It was a hostility he had not previously encountered since arriving in the United States.
“Before this problem, I’m so happy and relaxed in this country,” said Daudzai, 31. “I have a job, I’m safe, I have no enemies.”
Now, “people are looking at all Afghans as terrorists,” said Daudzai, who was a police officer in his homeland and is in the United States with his wife. Both have active green card applications.
After the fall of Kabul in 2021, Americans across the political spectrum mobilized to welcome Afghans in one of the largest volunteer efforts since the end of the Vietnam War. Churches and synagogues in communities from Arizona to Virginia collected donations, furnished homes and taught newcomers how
to navigate bus lines.
“They have worked for the last four years to achieve stability and integrate into American life,’’ said Larsen, co-founder of the refugee center in Mesa.
But the future of many Afghans, both those already in the United States and those hoping to immigrate, has been clouded by the Nov. 26 shooting, which killed one guard member, Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and wounded another, Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24.
Trump has announced additional measures that could jeopardize the ability of Afghans in the United States to remain permanently. Among them is a plan to conduct new security checks of people already granted green cards, or lawful permanent residency.
As of Tuesday, the Trump administration has suspended the processing of all immigration applications filed by nationals of 19 countries, including Afghanistan, who had been barred from entering the United States under an executive order Trump issued in June. It is unclear when, or if, the suspension might be lifted.
Hekmatullah, 38, who said he was a former spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport in Afghanistan, visited the center to seek camaraderie with fellow Afghans. His immigration status is especially precarious.
He, his wife and their three young daughters fled first to Iran, then to South America, where they joined the wave of humanity trudging through the perilous Darién Gap to make their way to North America.
They crossed the U.S. border with Mexico early last year and headed to Phoenix, where a brother-in-law, a former cargo plane pilot, had been resettled in 2021.
Hekmatullah, who spoke on condition that he be identified only by his first name to protect relatives in Afghanistan, applied for asylum, got a work permit and found a job at the airport.
His daughters, 11, 9 and 7, are thriving in school and already speak flawless English. In Afghanistan, they would be deprived of educational opportunities because they are girls.
“My kids are the most precious thing I have,” he said, as his daughters played on computers.
“If there was no Taliban and the country had stability,” he said, “I would not have left my country.”
Now, Hekmatullah fears their asylum case, and their future in the United States, could be in jeopardy.
“We left because of fear,” he said. “Now fear is following us.”

Brooklyn borough president will run for Velázquez’s House seat as socialists circle
By NICHOLAS FANDOS and BENJAMIN ORESKES
Antonio Reynoso, the Brooklyn borough president, said Thursday that he would run for a New York City House seat being vacated by Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez, setting the stage for a potential clash with a growing democratic socialist movement.
Reynoso, 42, is the first major candidate to declare a campaign for the left-leaning district. While not a socialist himself, he has a long progressive record, a high-profile role in the city’s most populous borough and a close relationship with Velázquez.
In an interview, Reynoso said he was motivated to run to check President Donald Trump’s attempts to curb immigration and federal safety net programs, and that he would seek to “decorporatize the Democratic Party.”
“I want to be a voice to push the party to the left,” he said.
Yet in a sign of the party’s rapidly shifting mores, Reynoso appears to be headed for a showdown with the Democratic Socialists of America, a farther-left faction that has been emboldened by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s victory in November. Now, the group and Mamdani himself are eager to test their political muscle — and have privately signaled that Reynoso is not their choice.
The Brooklyn and Queens district, New York’s 7th, may provide one of the best opportunities to grow the DSA’s ranks in Congress. It contains neighborhoods including Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick and Ridgewood, where young voters have regularly elected
socialists to state and local office in recent years. The district, which is more than onethird Latino, also voted overwhelmingly for Mamdani, a DSA member.
Several democratic socialist lawmakers are actively exploring runs, including council member Tiffany Cabán, state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez and Assembly member Claire Valdez. (State Sen. Julia Salazar, one of the New York City DSA chapter’s first officeholders, also contemplated running for the seat but said she had ruled it out.)
The local chapter, which counts 3,000 members in the district, is expected to vote in January to endorse one of them and put its formidable field operation behind the pick.
Velázquez, 72, stunned New York’s political class last month when she announced she would retire after 16 terms in the House. The first Puerto Rican woman elected to Congress, she had spent decades cultivating a younger generation of political leaders on the left, including several of her potential successors, and said it was time to let them take over.
The fight for her seat is far from the only one roiling Democrats in New York, as voters in the city and nationally grapple over the party’s direction amid Trump’s aggressive maneuvering.
In the heart of Manhattan, roughly 10 candidates are vying to succeed Rep. Jerrold Nadler, including a Kennedy scion. In a neighboring district that also includes parts of Brooklyn, Brad Lander, another progressive ally of Mamdani, is preparing to launch a primary campaign against Rep. Dan Goldman, a more traditional liberal. And challengers from the left have also picked primary fights with Reps.
Ritchie Torres in the Bronx and Adriano Espaillat in upper Manhattan.
More than the other contests, the race to replace Velázquez pits different factions of the left against one another.
The son of working-class Dominican immigrants, Reynoso began his career organizing child care providers to join the teachers’ union. He helped found New Kings Democrats, an organization dedicated to uprooting the more moderate Brooklyn political machine. And as a City Council member, he served as a co-chair of the body’s Progressive Caucus.
He was elected borough president in 2021, succeeding Eric Adams, the current mayor. The role comes with a visible platform but limited power. In 2023, he announced he would invest his office’s entire capital budget for a year, about $45 million, in maternal

health programs.
interview, Reynoso said he had dreamed of becoming a member of Congress since he was a college student, and that he was particularly motivated to try to protect programs such as food stamps and Section 8 housing vouchers that his family had relied on.
He stressed that though he was not a socialist, he was not antagonistic toward the DSA and had backed Mamdani as one of three preferred primary candidates in April.
“I have been doing this work as a reformer, as a progressive, for a long time before the DSA had a single candidate they were supporting,” he said, adding that he hoped to build a broader coalition in the diverse district.
He rolled out his campaign Thursday with the support of four progressive City Council members whose districts overlap with the congressional district: Lincoln Restler, Shekar Krishnan, Jennifer Gutiérrez and Sandy Nurse.
Reynoso met with DSA leaders in recent weeks to gauge if they might support his candidacy, but he said it was clear the group wanted to run one of its own members.
Cabán, 38, is perhaps the best known potential entrant. A former public defender, she narrowly lost a race for Queens district attorney in 2019.
Gonzalez, 30, is in her second term in the state Senate, representing parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
Valdez, 36, is a former labor organizer with the United Auto Workers who took office only this year.
Gonzalez declined to comment, as did representatives of the other two officials.

Trump has made the Epstein saga a case study in manipulation
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD
Given all of the conspiratorial noise about the Jeffrey Epstein story, we understand why some Americans are tempted to look away at this point. Still, it deserves attention because it has become a case study in the ways that President Donald Trump and his aides manipulate the public and abuse power. Even if the Epstein files that the Justice Department must release by Dec. 19 contain no significant revelations about Trump, the president is already guilty of acting with contempt for the public at nearly every turn in this saga.
If Trump were any other American president, his personal relationship with Epstein would be a major scandal on its own. The two were once friends and enjoyed joking about their reputations for chasing women. “He’s a lot of fun to be with,” Trump said about Epstein in a 2002 magazine profile. “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
In a crude birthday note to Epstein in 2003, Trump apparently signed his name in the place of pubic hair inside a sketch of a naked woman’s body. The note includes the line “may every day be another wonderful secret.” The two men had a falling out, for unclear reasons, before Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to charges that involved sexual behavior with a 16-year-old girl. In 2019, as Epstein’s world was collapsing, he wrote in an email about Trump, “Of course he knew about the girls.”
By Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign the Epstein case had become a MAGA obsession, related to Epstein’s associations with powerful people, some of them Democrats. And Trump’s campaign was happy to use the speculation for political advantage. He indicated in interviews that he would release the files, and his allies went further, encouraging conspiracy theories.
JD Vance, Trump’s vice presidential nominee, said that releasing the files was “important.” Donald Trump Jr. speculated that his father’s opponents were “trying to protect those pedophiles.” Elon Musk declared: “Part of why Kamala is getting so much support is that, if Trump wins, that Epstein client list is going to become public. And some of those billionaires behind Kamala are terrified of that outcome.”
Once Trump returned to the presidency, he had the power to do as he had indicated he would and order a broad release of the files. He did not. Instead, his subordinates tried to make it seem as if they were champions of transparency while avoiding the release of new information.
The timeline is damning. In late February, administration officials invited right-wing influencers to the White House and gave them binders of Epstein documents, although some attendees were disappointed that they contained little new information. Two days later, Attorney General Pam Bondi proclaimed that Americans would “get the full Epstein files” with redactions to “protect grand jury information and confidential witnesses.” In March, she spoke publicly about a “truckload” of new evidence that her department had recently received. “Everything’s going to come out to the public,” Bondi said. But then the administration’s approach changed — after
Bondi briefed Trump that his name appeared in the files. “Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein?” the president snapped at reporters in July. “This guy’s been talked about for years.” That month, the Justice Department said it had no client list and would stop revealing Epstein material to the public.
During the 2024 campaign, the Trump team had profited from indulging speculation; once in power, and apparently worried about Trump’s vulnerability, their opportunism was exposed.
At this point, Trump undertook an aggressive effort to prevent the release of additional information. After two House members — Ro Khanna, D-Calif., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky. — started a petition to order its release, Trump blasted Massie as disloyal and tried to intimidate other Republicans from signing on. He appears to have pressured Mike Johnson, the speaker of the House, to use procedural maneuvers to prevent the matter from receiving a vote. He lashed out on social media at “PAST supporters” for pressing “the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax.” In July, he became the first sitting president to file a personal defamation lawsuit against a media organization when he sued The Wall Street Journal’s parent company and two of its journalists for reporting on the Epstein birthday note. The Journal has stood by the story.
As it became clear this fall that the Khanna-Massie petition would succeed and the House would pass a bill mandating more disclosure, Trump reversed himself again. First, he weaponized the Justice Department for partisan advantage and directed it to investigate Epstein’s ties with Democrats — not with Republicans. Finally, Trump flipped his position on the House bill two nights before the scheduled vote, urged Republicans to vote for it and then ridiculously claimed credit for its passage.
He signed the bill on Nov. 19, compelling the Justice Department to release the files within 30 days. The law allows for the redaction of victims’ information, as well as the withholding of materials related to national defense or an active federal investigation.
We want to emphasize that we are conflicted about the release of the files. Investigative materials are not normally part of the public record for a reason. They typically include a mixture of facts, speculation and false leads, and can unfairly damage reputations. The material can sometimes hurt victims. We also recognize that Epstein’s case is not typical. It suggested a moral rot in America’s elite circles because Epstein remained a part of some of those circles long after he had to register as a sex offender. Many of his victims, feeling betrayed by the justice system, understandably want the files to become public. Many other Americans want the chance to assess the conduct of investigators and prosecutors, as well as Epstein’s influential friends.
Even if the wisdom of releasing the files is a nuanced issue, Trump’s behavior has been indefensible. His campaign took advantage of monstrous crimes for his political benefit. He misled the American public about his dealings with Epstein and his attitude toward the files’ release. He politicized the Justice Department on this matter, as on so many others.
Now that the same department will be in charge of redacting

the documents to protect innocent people, national security and ongoing investigations, Americans should view the product of this review with skepticism. There is every reason to believe that the Trump administration will exploit the process to protect any of its allies named in the files (starting with the president himself) and to embarrass Democrats and other perceived Trump enemies. Congress should be ready to defy Trump on this subject again and investigate the Justice Department’s handling of the release.

Five science fiction movies to stream now
By ELISABETH VINCENTELLI
In this month’s picks, there is cloud busting in Peru, a shadowy astronaut drama, doomsday preppers in New Zealand and more.
‘The Astronaut’
The first two-thirds of Jess Varley’s “The Astronaut” are relatively standard paranoid science-fiction fare. The title character, Capt. Sam Walker (Kate Mara), crashes back from space physically and mentally banged up. Her caring adoptive father, Gen. William Harris (Laurence Fishburne), arranges for her to stay at an isolated safe house where she can be evaluated and recover, with occasional visits from her husband (Gabriel Luna) and young daughter (Scarlett Holmes). It’s not long before things go bump in the night. Weird shadowy presences and noises manifest themselves. Sam notices new bruises on her body, which also begins to change in increasingly horrific ways. The film makes you wonder what the heck she brought back from space, though a better question might be what she left with. The movie should come with a warning: Abandon all hope for plausibility, ye who press the “rent” button. But there is something admirable about the way the director goes for a bold plot twist — bold and bonkers. The pivot creates more questions than it answers, but there’s something to be said for throwing caution (and sense) to the wind. (Rent or buy it on most major platforms.)
apart — a novel perspective on an ages-old issue that has fed generations of domestic strife. (Rent or buy it on most major platforms.)

to finally break. But rather than get into the details of that effort, director V. Checa focuses on the daily life of Teo, a quiet and withdrawn boy, but also a resourceful one. He supports himself and his dad by doing odd jobs at a club, then falls into something more lucrative when he begins surreptitiously installing surveillance devices on behalf of a group of petty criminals.
‘Tiempos Futuros’ (‘The Shape of Things to Come’)
“No one in the city has seen it rain,” Luis (Fernando Bacilio) tells his young son, Teo (Lorenzo Molina), referring to their hometown, Lima, Peru. To help improve the situation, the pair are building an elaborate machine in their apartment, a large engine connected to a rooftop contraption that looks like an oversize satellite dish. Luis’s plan is to cause the clouds that perpetually hang over Lima

To be clear, this isn’t another adaptation of the H.G. Wells sci-fi novel (you’re better off entering the original title, “Tiempos Futuros,” when searching for the film on Tubi). Rather, this is a somber, haunting art house tale of daily existence in a world where rain always threatens but doesn’t fall — this is not far-off from the parched Peruvian capital’s reality. Checa paints a matter-of-fact picture of a future that has arrived early. (Stream it on Tubi.)
‘ReEntry’
On the surface, Brendan Choisnet’s film looks a bit like a gender-reversed version of “The Astronaut,” this time with a man who returns changed from a trip. It’s not so much in the travelers’ destinations that the films differ (though there’s that, too) but in their tones: “ReEntry” is a psychological marital drama in which a couple feel as if they’ve become strangers. As part of an experiment devised by the genius scientist Alicia (the ever-reliable Noma Dumezweni), Lucas (Sam Trammell) steps into a gateway to unknown dimensions. Unfortunately instead of instantly reappearing, he remains missing for over a year — and when he finally returns, he thinks he was gone for just a flash.

Lucas’s wife, Elenore (Emily Deschanel), is thrilled to have her husband back, until she starts noticing details that don’t compute, like they are remembering moments from their shared past completely differently: The Lucas who came back is identical to the one who left, yet not quite the same. At times “ReEntry” feels like a multiverse variation on gaslighting, or maybe an allegory for couples drifting
‘Forgive Us All’ Some wealthy doomsday preppers buy property in New Zealand, convinced that this isolated nation would be a refuge from civilizational collapse. Maybe they should watch Jordana Stott’s movie, which makes clear that remoteness does not ensure safety. Sure, Rory (Lily Sullivan) is able to survive a zombie epidemic while holed up on a farm with her father-in-law, Otto (the great Australian actor Richard Roxburgh), and a battery of surveillance cameras. But eventually their routine is shattered by the arrival of Noah (Lance Giles), who stole a vial that could contain the cure to the infection and is on the run from the baddies who want it back.
“Forgive Us All” is a good, if sometimes slow moving, example of its genre, with welcome Western touches like transportation by horseback. The attention to production values also rewards close attention — the squeaking, grunting, squelching, croaking, screeching Howlers, as the infected are called, have especially good sound design. But where the movie really hits home is when Rory asks Otto the question that haunts all such tales: “What are we surviving for?” (Stream it on Amazon Prime Video or Tubi.)
‘Watch the Skies’
The latest effort from the Swedish filmmaking collective Crazy Pictures (“The Unthinkable”) comes with a quirk: The movie was dubbed into English by its original cast, their efforts adjusted with a program called TrueSync so the characters’ lips match the new language. The result is visually acceptable but sounds rather weird since everybody now speaks a Swedish-accented English. Fortunately, Prime Video carries both versions, so head straight to the one with subtitles. Still, we are likely to see more similar attempts.
Set in 1996, “Watch the Skies” revolves around UFO Sweden, a motley group of nerdy amateurs who keep a close eye on phenomena that could be linked to intergalactic visitors. Their eccentric routines are disrupted by the arrival of Denise (Inez Dahl Torhaug), a headstrong teenager and a rare case of a female hacker in a movie. She is convinced her father, who used to be a member of the group, was abducted a decade earlier by the very aliens he was obsessed with. Some of “Watch the Skies” is taken up by tensions triggered by Denise within UFO Sweden, but for the most part this is a caper about obsessive geeks trying to solve a puzzle, with a strong Spielberg influence. Many movies about this particular subset of people often end up being about their troubled psyches rather than anything really sci-fi, but rest assured that something is definitely afoot here. (Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.)

Spain sees itself as a beacon for immigrants. So do many Latin Americans.
By JASON HOROWITZ
In the Roots of My Town restaurant on Spain’s eastern coast, Luz Fanny Arce Campiño, 53, stirred a rich stew and described how her adopted European home had eclipsed the United States as the most desired destination for friends and family back in her Colombian hometown.
After having arrived in Madrid by plane and becoming “another illegal immigrant” by overstaying a visa, Campiño said, she established residency in the small town of Paiporta, got work in her brother’s restaurant and was saved by “guardian angels” who rescued her during disastrous floods last year. Now the government has granted her legal status and a pathway to Spanish citizenship.
“I’m happy,” she said.
Unlike the United States and some European neighbors defined by tough immigration stances, Spain’s left-wing government has projected an image of itself as the West’s new melting pot. It has embraced immigrants, especially Latin Americans who speak Spain’s language, share its religion and understand its culture. Even activists who say that warm welcome doesn’t extend to many Africans acknowledge that Spain is an outlier on a continent closing its doors.
The government says it has been motivated in part by progressive values and a memory of Spanish emigration to Latin America, especially during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. But its embrace of migrants, the government says, also reflects the reality of shrinking birthrates and a dearth of homegrown workers to support vast welfare benefits.
Spain’s more than 3 million foreign-born workers — with more than 1 million arriving since Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took power in 2018 — have helped make the country, by some measures, the fastest growing major economy in the eurozone.

Ana Mostazo, left, wearing a shirt of the “Christian Warriors of El Cid” association, in Valencia, Spain, Oct. 9, 2025. Spain’s government presents its migrant policy as an alternative to the Trump administration’s crackdowns, welcoming many people from former colonies — but migrant activists say that open-arm policy does not extend to those arriving on boats from Africa. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The New York Times)
“Either you open up and grow,” Sánchez said in a recent interview with The New York Times. “Or you close off and shrink.”
Migration activists argue there is still plenty of distance between Sánchez’s soaring rhetoric and the reality on the ground.
Many Latin Americans complain of a lingering and snobby colonial gaze. And though the government recognizes it has a rare ability, envied by some of Europe’s hard-right leaders, to attract a population that can more easily assimilate, activists say the government is slowwalking a petition in parliament to declare an amnesty and grant legal status to an estimated 500,000 immigrants, mostly Latin Americans.
Critics also accuse the government of a glaring double standard. Many Latin Americans arrive by plane on tourist visas, overstay and expect to find a path toward legalization. They often do. Many Africans, by contrast, arrive by boat and without papers, and find border controls, closed doors or a purgatory of bureaucracy.
Sánchez rejects the critique, saying in the Times interview that the government is not incentivizing one group over another.
His government has separately pointed out that a large percentage of the country’s legal immigrants come from Morocco and says that it is the anti-migrant, anti-Muslim and growing Vox party that prefers Latin Americans to Africans.
Elma Saiz, Spain’s minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, added in a recent interview that all the anti-immigrant noise on the right amounted to a desperate distraction from what was a clear success story.
“Spain is a beacon,” she said.
For Spain, letting in immigrants has myriad advantages.
Although the country still has an unemployment rate of more than 10%, the worst in the European Union, joblessness is half of what it was a decade ago, and supporters of immigration say new arrivals are filling low-paying or physically demanding jobs that Spaniards are reluctant to take in restaurants, as nannies or as farm and construction workers.
Without immigrants, Saiz said, Spain “would come to a standstill.”
There is also a political motivation to treat new immigrants well. Many constitute a potential voter base in a deeply polarized country, and the conservative opposition that includes Vox has vigorously courted Latin Americans, especially those from Venezuela skeptical of their country’s socialist policies.
Carlos Flores, a Vox member of parliament from Valencia, said he would have no problem with leaders prioritizing certain groups of immigrants because, in his view, a Norwegian retiree, American expat or wealthy Venezuelan pose “zero problems.” He said the same is true of “hardworking immigrants” from Latin America whom he trusted to care for his elderly parents.
He argued, however, that the government’s progressive ideology blinded it to what he considered the cultural incompatibility of migrants from African countries and the security risks he said they could bring.
The government counters that stance, pointing out that crime is down compared with 20 years ago, before the latest wave of immigration. And while immigrants constitute an outsize percentage of people convicted in Spanish courts, experts say poverty is the main driver, and that the crimes are often nonviolent. Last year, the head of the national police said it was “disinformation” that foreigners were driving up crime.
Still polls suggest Vox’s message has in-
creasing reach.
On Valencia’s annual Moors and Christians festival day — reflecting the centuries-long Arab caliphate in much of Spain and then the centuries-long Christian effort to reconquer the peninsula — Ana Mostazo, 40, wore the shirt of the “Christian Warriors of El Cid” association. She watched an AI video on her phone of Christian knights reconquering Spanish towns through the Middle Ages and spoke proudly of her immigrant friends from Latin America. They were keeping the economy afloat, she said, but added, “Moroccans are a problem.”
Spain’s government calls such statements misleading. The Interior Ministry says illegal immigration from North Africa to the Canary Islands and other parts of the Spanish coast was down 40% this year. Despite that, the country’s conservatives wanted to adopt a fortresslike mentality common in southern European neighbors with right-wing governments, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Spain’s interior minister, said in an interview.
“They’re saying we should follow policies like Italy and Greece,” he said. “And we’re being more effective than they are.”
He said the government is seeking a balance in promoting the benefits of legal immigration with efforts to combat illegal immigration. He said that the problem with the amnesty petition, supported by the Catholic Church, was that it could act as “a pull factor” for smugglers to bring more migrants.
He also spoke about how Spain had been “advancing border security” into African nations and said Spanish officials were now working in Senegal, Niger and Gambia. He dismissed concerns about Spain’s working with undemocratic African governments to catch illegal migrants — furnishing some with drones and biometric devices — as Eurocentric and patronizing.
Those who do make it in, migrant advocates say, often live in miserable conditions far from the Spanish dream.
After arriving in Spain from Ghana illegally in 2018, Ali Maiga, 31, has lived with other African migrants in a ruined and rat-infested building next to a cemetery. He took courses in driving a forklift but couldn’t get a work contract to obtain a residence permit to allow him to work legally. He has taken off-the-books jobs in a scrapyard to get by. He has seen his friends back home posting about their success there, he said, but “I don’t want to tell them the story here.”
Trump’s former campaign manager assisted Honduran presidential candidate
By KENNETH P. VOGEL, DAVID C. ADAMS and JACK NICAS
President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager assisted the campaign of a right-wing Honduran presidential candidate who was endorsed by the American president and is now in a razor-thin contest to win the election.
Brad Parscale, who ran Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign until he was replaced less than four months before the election, worked with consultants who helped run Nasry Asfura’s presidential campaign before last Sunday’s election.
In the days before the election, Trump endorsed Asfura, then announced the pardon of Juan Orlando Hernández, a former Honduran president who hails from the same conservative party as Asfura and had been convicted last year of working with cartels to flood the United States with cocaine.
Trump’s moves injected chaos into the campaign’s last stretch. Election results were still being tallied as of press time Thursday, with a very narrow margin separating Asfura, 67, and Salvador Nasralla, 72, a sportscaster from another right-wing party.
Parscale acknowledged that he advised the campaign, but said that he had nothing to do with the endorsement or the pardon.
“I had no contact at all with the administration, including the president, about the election in Honduras or the pardon,” he told The New York Times.
Parscale’s involvement in the campaign offers a glimpse into the ways that right-wing political interests around the world have sought to affiliate with the American president.
It underscores Trump’s emergence as the leader of a populist wave sweeping the globe,
as well as his increasing willingness to meddle in foreign politics on behalf of politicians who reflect his nationalist rhetoric.
The trend has also created lucrative opportunities for his associates and former advisers, who have advised politicians seeking to cast themselves as Trump-like figures in Albania, Republika Srpska and elsewhere.
There is long tradition of American political consultants heading overseas for big paydays after their candidates occupy presidential office. For foreign politicians, hiring operatives with ties to Washington’s ruling party can create the impression that they are in the good graces of the U.S president and have the influence to secure increased aid or trade with the United States.
There is an added incentive with Trump, who has used the levers of government to punish perceived foes at home and abroad.
Parscale is well positioned to capitalize. He runs companies called Campaign Nucleus and EyesOver that process and analyze data for political groups and other clients.
He has pitched his services to President Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia, but nothing has come of it yet. He has had more success in South America, where he joined with Fernando Cerimedo, an influential political operative in the region.
The two men have been partners in a Buenos Aires, Argentina-based political consultancy called Numen for a couple of years.
The firm advised the campaigns of Trump allies, including President Javier Milei of Argentina, for whom Numen worked in 2023, according to a Justice Department filing, as well as the successful campaign this year of President Rodrigo Paz of Bolivia.
Parscale assisted during the Bolivian election, traveling to the region during the cam-
paign. He helped Numen’s team on the ground use data tools developed by his companies.
Parscale did not travel to the region during the Honduran election, but he advised Numen’s team on how to use data to target voters, according to Cerimedo, who became a prominent figure in Asfura’s campaign.
“Brad set up all the infrastructure that I work with,” Cerimedo said in a text message.
Parscale argued that the tools from Campaign Nucleus and EyesOver helped his clients in Bolivia and Honduras.
In a social media post last week, Trump called Asfura “the only real friend of Freedom in Honduras” and pledging to work with him to fight narco-trafficking “and bring needed aid to the people of Honduras.”
The endorsement was widely seen as boosting Asfura’s campaign by signaling the prospect that he could usher in better relations between the two countries after four years of hostility.
But the pardon of Hernández — which was aggressively pushed by another Trump ally, Roger Stone — was viewed as a liability for Asfura, associating the candidate with an unpopular former president of the same party who is widely seen as corrupt.
Stone has told the Times he was not compensated for his pardon advocacy, which began months ago and culminated in his sending Trump a letter that Hernández wrote in late October pleading for clemency.
Asked about Stone’s role in the pardon, the White House pointed to comments by Trump in which he called Hernández’s conviction “a Biden administration setup,” though the investigation that led to his imprisonment began years earlier, before Trump was elected the first time.
The pardon also seems at odds with the Trump administration’s efforts to stanch the
drug trade through the potentially illegal bombing of boats in the waters around Venezuela suspected of trying to smuggle drugs into the United States. The administration has provided little evidence of its accusations.
By Monday evening, election officials said that Asfura trailed Nasralla by 0.6 percentage points, or 14,400 votes, with nearly 80% of ballots counted.
Asfura’s party, the National Party, said its data showed that Asfura led by 2 percentage points, or 77,000 votes, with 92% of ballots counted. The reason for the discrepancy was unclear.
The National Party posted a video Tuesday night of Cerimedo analyzing partial results to predict that Asfura would ultimately win.
Like Trump and his allies, Cerimedo has a history of claiming election fraud to explain results that he disfavors.
In Brazil in 2022, Cerimedo posted a video that went viral explaining why he thought the election had been rigged against the rightwing former president, Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump’s. Brazil’s federal police later recommended criminal charges against Cerimedo, accusing him of pushing a false narrative about a stolen election that was part of a broader plot for Bolsonaro to hold on to power. Cerimedo was never charged.
The following year, before the Argentine election, Cerimedo warned of potential voter fraud, but dropped the suggestion after his candidate, Milei, easily won.
In Honduras, Trump has echoed unsubstantiated suggestions that a potential loss by Asfura would be tainted by fraud.
“Looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential Election,” he wrote on social media on Monday night. “If

Move over, computer science. Students are flocking to new AI majors.
By NATASHA SINGER
Artificial intelligence is the hot new college major.
This semester, more than 3,000 students enrolled in a new college of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
At the University of California, San Diego, 150 first-year students signed up for a new AI major. And the State University of New York at Buffalo created a stand-alone “department of A.I. and society,” which is offering new interdisciplinary degrees in fields like “A.I. and policy analysis.”
The fast popularization of products such as ChatGPT, along with skyrocketing valuations of tech giants such as chipmaker Nvidia, is helping to drive the campus AI boom.
Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have poured billions of dollars into the technology. And this year, Google and
Microsoft announced company efforts to train millions of students and adult workers on AI.
Now interest in understanding, using and learning how to build AI technologies is soaring, and schools are racing to meet rising student and industry demand.
Over the past two years, dozens of U.S. universities and colleges have announced new AI departments, majors, minors, courses, interdisciplinary concentrations and other programs.
In 2022, for instance, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created a major called “A.I. and decision-making.” Students in the program learn to develop AI systems and study how technologies such as robots interact with humans and the environment. This year, nearly 330 students are enrolled in the program — making AI the secondlargest major at MIT after computer science.

At MIT, a new program called “artificial intelligence and decision-making” is now the second-most-popular undergraduate major. (Rune Fisker/The New York Times)
“Students who prefer to work with data to address problems find themselves more drawn to an AI major,” said Asu Ozdaglar, the deputy dean of academics at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. Students interested in applying AI in fields such as biology and health care are also flocking to the new major, she added.
Some college students said the new major seemed timely, and that they hoped the AI branding would open up more job opportunities.
Leena Banga, a first-year student from Fremont, California, said she had become interested in AI after trying out chatbots and wanted to understand more about how the underlying technology worked. After participating in an AI summer program for high school students at the University of Pennsylvania, she decided to pursue the new major at UC San Diego.
“This is so cool to me to have the opportunity to be at the forefront of this,” said Banga, 18.
Had universities not yet offered new AI degrees, Banga said, she would have chosen computer science — a popular major that teaches computer programming and fundamental computing concepts, such as the algorithmic building blocks of AI.
Over the past 15 years, the boom in smartphones and social media, along with industry promises of high-paying tech jobs, helped fuel college enrollments in computing. Nearly 173,000 undergraduates majored in computer science in the spring of 2024, compared with about 65,000
students a decade earlier, according to the Computing Research Association, a nonprofit that gathers data annually from about 200 universities.
But this fall, 62% of computing programs reported undergraduate enrollment declines, according to a report in October from the Computing Research Association.
One reason for the dip: student employment concerns.
Some large tech companies are laying off thousands of workers, and recent computing graduates say they have faced increased challenges in landing tech jobs this year. Companies such as Amazon have also begun asking their software engineers to use AI tools that can write code, potentially reducing the need for junior programmers.
Among 133 computing programs participating in the Computing Research Association report, 66% somewhat or strongly agreed that computing majors who graduated this year were having difficulty getting jobs.
“It’s a noticeable difference,” said Andy Meneely, the undergraduate program director for software engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology, “especially when I see really good students struggling to get a job.”
While computer science enrollment generally declined this year, many schools reported increased enrollment in subfields such as AI. Tracy Camp, the executive director of the Computing Research Association, called the shift “a new era for computing degrees becoming more specialized.”
That’s true of the AI major at UC San Diego, which is based in the department of computer science and engineering. As part of the program, the university developed two new courses in the foundations of AI and machine learning. Students must also take advanced math and grapple with the social impacts of emerging technologies, said Mia Minnes, the university’s vice chair for undergraduate computer science education.
Banga, the first-year student there, said her siblings were initially skeptical of her chosen degree program.
“They were like: ‘What? There’s a major called AI? No way!’” she said. “But my dad is in the tech business, and he was really happy.”

Wines, spirits and more to bring to any holiday gathering

Selecting the right bottle to bring to a party is never easy. (Gwen Keraval/The New York Times)
By ERIC ASIMOV
Every year around now, we test the proposition that it’s better to give than to receive. The challenge is what to give.
For those who enjoy wine or other alcoholic beverages, the answer is often a bottle. But not always, and choosing a bottle is not simple. Cost is important, as is the nature of the event, your relationship to the recipient and their interests. Sometimes, as with host gifts, these bottles are not intended to be opened and shared, unless specified in advance. Recipients may choose to do so, but it should never be expected. In other cases, bottles are your contribution to a gathering, where they are meant to be opened and enjoyed. Here are a few recommendations of wine and more, for gifts, holiday parties and gatherings of all sorts.
The best bottle for the host
Champagne is the all-purpose host gift, never inappropriate and universally welcomed. But prices have skyrocketed in the past few years. Here are a few options.
$50 to $60
Lanson Champagne Brut Black Label NV
Deutz Champagne Brut Classic NV
Pierre Moncuit Champagne Moncuit-Delos Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs NV
$65 to $85
Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Collection 245 NV
Pierre Péters Champagne Brut Cuvée de Réserve Blanc de Blancs NV
Dhondt-Grellet Champagne Extra Brut Dans un Premier Temps NV Blowout
Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée NV Budget
Raventos i Blanc Conca del Riu de Arnoia Rosado 2023 (It’s not Champagne, but it’s delicious bubbly.)
The best bottle for a boss
A gift for a boss is tricky. A thoughtless or insignificant choice conveys a lack of respect, while an exorbitant gift might seem obsequious. If the boss in question likes wine, Champagne is always good (though not the blowout or budget choices). But spirits seem to me to be weightier — more, well, boss. Here is a solid selection of bottles that are satisfying but not too extravagant.
Scotch
Highland Park Orkney Islands Single Malt 12-Year
Ardbeg Islay Single Malt 10-Year (If your boss like smoky, peaty malts.)
Bourbon
Michter’s US-1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Rye
Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey
Heaven’s Door Refuge Straight Rye Whiskey (If your boss is a Bob Dylan fan, Dylan was a founder of Heaven’s Door.)
Rum
Neisson Organic Blanc Rhum Agricole Mezcal
Del Maguey Chichicapa
The best bottle for the office party
Some office parties are more like potlucks than dinner parties, so you would expect your offering to be opened and poured. These gatherings can be large and informal, and a good but modest bottle, or all three, would make a lovely contribution. All are around $20 for a liter bottle.
White
Brand Pfalz Riesling Dry 2023
Orange
Gulp Hablo Spain Orange 2024
Red
La Boutanche California Red Blend 2024
The best bottle for friends
At a gathering of friends, you would expect your contributions to be opened and poured. Here, you need to evaluate the size and nature of the group. For four friends, say, a bottle or two will do. For larger groups, two or three bottles. Magnums would be especially festive but are not always easy to find. If thirst-quenching bottles are called for, the bottles I suggested for the office party would do. But here are a few other ideas, all under $30 a bottle.

The best bottle for the holiday party
How do holiday parties diverge from other gatherings? By explicitly marking the holidays, they inspire a different, more celebratory spirit. Guests may not know each other but are united in their desire to revel. Any of the beverages above, especially the Champagnes, would be welcomed, but if they seem too dear, here are some less expensive sparkling wine alternatives, all under $35 a bottle.

The best gift for the wine geek
What do you give to the person who knows far more about wine than you do? Not wine. People with expertise tend to have firm opinions and pronounced likes and dislikes. It’s too easy to miscalculate and innocently displease. Give these people a good book, some touch-screen gloves or some other cool gift, anything but wine.

A guide to a World Cup that will have more hosts and teams than ever
By JACK LANG / THE ATHLETIC
The 2026 World Cup, once a dot on the horizon, starts to come into full view this week. With qualification now mostly wrapped up, the draw for the tournament is Friday at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington.
The World Cup, held once every four years, pits the best men’s national soccer teams against one another in a tournament that is more than a month long. In the lead-up to the draw for the event, we answer some of the big questions you may have.
How big is the World Cup?
FIFA, the sport’s global governing body, puts the number of people who watched the previous edition in 2022 on television at 2.7 billion — and the number who engaged with the tournament across all media at almost double that.
Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, likes to compare the World Cup to 104 Super Bowls. That line exaggerates the appeal of some of the low-wattage early contests among the 104 matches, but you can see what he’s getting at. This is the very definition of a big-ticket event.
Where is the 2026 World Cup being held?
It’s a joint enterprise among the United States, Canada and Mexico. The United States has the most games (78) and host cities (11), as well as sole responsibility for the quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place playoff and final. Canada and Mexico will each put on 13 matches, including three in the knockout rounds.
When does it start?
The tournament begins June 11, when Mexico plays … well, we’ll find that part out in Friday’s draw. The group stage runs until June 27, after which it is the guaranteed drama of win-or-go-home soccer.
How long does it last?
The final is July 19. So that’s 39 days, with matches on all but five of them. A marathon and a sprint, in other words.
How many teams compete?
From 1998 through 2022, 32 teams competed. But for 2026, FIFA has expanded the tournament to 48 nations. Didn’t the U.S. host the men’s World Cup before?
Yes, in 1994. It was pitched as a coming-out party for soccer in the U.S., which at that point did not have a professional domestic league. The tournament was widely regarded as a success, with strong attendance throughout. The United States made it out of a tricky group in dramatic circumstances before succumbing to the eventual winner, Brazil. Doesn’t it usually take place in one country?
Historically, yes. Only one of the first 22 editions had more than one host. That was the 2002 World Cup, which took place in Japan and South Korea.
Now, though? We appear to be entering a new era. Next summer’s North American three-way will be followed by an even more splintered edition in 2030: Spain, Portugal and Morocco are the official joint hosts, but there will also be three matches in South America to kick off the tournament. That is a way to commemorate the World Cup’s centenary, with the first tournament in 1930 having been staged in Uruguay. It also means that there will be games on three continents. Carbon footprint? Never heard of it.
Which countries will be there next summer?
Forty-two teams have qualified. The list includes a lot of soccer’s usual suspects but also some newcomers, including Uzbekistan, Jordan, Cape Verde and Curaçao.
Any notable countries missing?
In short: no. There are no absolute soccer giants that will definitely not be at the tournament. India and China are the most significant by population size, but they are not traditional soccer powerhouses. Indeed, eight of the 10 most populous nations have not qualified.
Still, the picture remains blurry at this stage, because six qualifying spots remain up for grabs. Two of them will go to the winners of an intercontinental playoff tournament that takes place in Mexico in March.
Four more European teams will also qualify, with 16 teams still scrapping to progress. The biggest name in there is Italy, which has won the World Cup four times but risks missing out for the third edition in a row.
How does the draw work?
The 48 competing countries will be split into 12 groups of four for the group stages.
Before the draw, teams will be seeded and divided into four pots based on their FIFA rankings. The three host countries will join the highest-ranked FIFA teams in Pot 1.
Teams will be randomly drawn from each pot and assigned to one of the 12 groups. However, teams from the same confederation cannot meet — except for those in UEFA. There can be up to two European teams per group.
With the first game of the 2026 World Cup taking place at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11, Mexico has automatically been assigned to Group A.
Canada will play the second match, in Toronto on June 12, so it is in Group B. The United States, which is playing the third match, in Los Angeles, also on June 12, will be in Group D.
So they do the draw, but we won’t know all of the matches?
This started in 2022; previously, FIFA waited until qualifying was wrapped up before cracking on. It means that Friday’s big revelations will not have quite the air of finality that they might; the list of groups is going to have more blank spaces and question marks than an exam paper.

Fans cheer for Spain at Circulo Espanol during the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands in New York, July 11, 2010. Spain that year became the eighth country to win the World Cup (by beating the Netherlands 1-0 at Soccer City in Johannesburg), and is one of the favorites to win next year’s World Cup, which starts in June. (Marcus Yam/ The New York Times)
Once the tournament starts, how does it work?
There will be 12 groups of four teams, as decided (albeit not conclusively) by the draw. Each group is its own little single round-robin league, with every team playing the other three once.
At the end of it all, the top two sides in each section qualify for the second round. Since 1998 in the World Cup, 16 teams advanced. Now, with the expansion, FIFA has added a whole extra set of games in the knockout phase, the round of 32.
That means two things. One is that the two teams that eventually make the final will play eight World Cup games, where previously they would have had seven. The consequences of that inflation remain to be determined. The second is that eight teams that finish third in their groups will progress to the knockout stages, too.
There will be a ranking of the 12 third-placed sides, based on points won in their three matches and then on a hierarchy of tiebreakers. And then, depending on which groups they are from, the top eight of the 12 will be inserted into the round-of-32 fixtures. There are, apparently, 495 possible combinations.
So what’s the issue here?
For one thing, the ambiguity — not knowing whether a given result will be enough to secure progress until all matches are complete — favors the groups that play their third and final matches last. Two teams that know they would both go through if their match ended in a draw might play differently if that question was still open.
Then there is the question of arbitrariness. In the old system, the reward for winning a group was a knockout match against a team that had not won its group. In the 48-team
The San Juan Daily Star
tournament, some group winners will play runners-up, like before, but others will face third-place finishers.
What teams are the favorites?
The consensus is that it’s quite an open field. Spain is certainly a front-runner. It was crowned champion of Europe in 2024 and has maintained momentum over the 18 months since, playing a technical, measured brand of soccer that suits the rhythms of a big tournament. Plus, in teenage winger Lamine Yamal, Spain has a player who can settle big matches single-handedly.
Few teams can match the firepower and depth of France, the World Cup winner in 2018 and runner-up four years later. Its campaign will have a valedictory tone to it — coach Didier Deschamps, in place since 2012, will stand down when it is complete.
With doubts about the reigning champion, Argentina (a questionable defense, a star player in Lionel Messi who will
turn 39 during the tournament), and the World Cup perennial Brazil (no fullbacks, a new coach in Carlo Ancelotti with little preparation time), the third favorite might be England. Perfect in qualifying and led by coach Thomas Tuchel, the English will not be anyone’s idea of a pushover.
You said this World Cup is bigger than any before. Is there anything else new for 2026?
The whole rhythm of the tournament is going to be different this time. Adding 16 teams to the mix increases the number of games from 64 in 2022 to 104. The usual pattern of three group matches a day to start the group stage is no more; we’re looking at four a day from June 13 to 23.
That will take some getting used to, as will the relative scarcity of rest days. There is no pause between the group stage and the round of 32, which then flows directly into the round of 16, again with no respite. Players, of course, can still rest between games.
PR submits preliminary roster to MLB for 2026 World Baseball Classic
By THE STAR STAFF
The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation earlier this week submitted its 35-player preliminary roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a requirement of Major League Baseball as part of the national team selection process.
The roster will not be made public until authorized by MLB, the Federation stated.
“Putting together a team for a tournament of the magnitude of the World Baseball Classic requires planning, analysis, and absolute commitment,” Federation President José Daniel Quiles said in a written statement on Wednesday. “Our general manager, Carlos Beltrán, along with operations manager Joey Solá and executive director Efraín Williams,

have done a serious, responsible, and meticulous job. We are satisfied with the process and trust their recommendations to field a team that will represent Puerto Rico with dignity.”
Beltrán said the evaluation focused on reducing the initial group of 50 players to 35, a task he described as complex due to the quality of the talent considered.
“The process of reducing the roster from 50 to 35 players is never easy, because we know that each player who is left out has put in effort, commitment, and heart,” he said. “That’s why we took the time to evaluate each player with the utmost respect, always looking for the best combinations that give us the strongest chance to compete.”
The general manager added that the next stage will consist of reducing the roster to the 30 players allowed for the tournament.
“... [W]e will complete that stage in February,” Beltrán said. “Both myself and the Federation are working with dedication and transparency to ensure that this experience of representing Puerto Rico is meaningful and positive.”
Beltrán added that they have already received permission from MLB to call up several players who have confirmed their availability, while efforts continue to obtain the remaining authorizations.
“It’s a process that takes time, as has happened in previous tournaments, but we continue forward with patience, humility, and enthusiasm,” he said. “God willing, our goal remains the same: to represent Puerto Rico with dignity and make our name proud.”
The final roster must be submitted to MLB by Feb. 3, 2026.
