THE SANDY KEYS Winter 2012 Issue In this issue! Letter From The Editors Dear MAST Key Clubbers, Because of the break from the hurricane, we weren’t able to make copies of our September/October issue, which was also our “Welcome to Key Club” issue, but we will be publishing it on our Key Club website. Even though our school was affected by the hurricane, Key Club wasn’t. Now, there are more opportunities for those weren’t affected by Sandy to help others who were. We have families in our school that were majorly affected, and as the closeknit community that MAST is, now is the time to help out our fellow classmates. Even if it is just a gift card to Shop Rite or Lowes, something is better than nothing. In addition, we have the holidays coming up, and upperclassmen will tell you that this is the time that Key Club is

at its busiest. We do many annual projects and activities and we urge you to try to do as much as you can this holiday season especially. Our Key Club participates in ringing bells for the Salvation Army at Stop and Shop, gift wrapping at Barnes and Noble, Project NOEL, and more. We hope that you will join us this season!

What is Key Leader? It is a weekend where attendees learn the qualities of a good leader and to meet new friends. Where is Key Leader held? Cross Roads camp in Port Murray New Jersey from December 14th 16th. What does one do there? One learns leader ship techniques through lectures and fun activities. Who attends? Students from all over NJ, mostly Key Club members attend though non Key Club members are encouraged to attend as well. Is it the same as D-CON? Not really, it is a much more casual weekend focused on leadership. What does one bring? Casual clothing, sneakers, flashlight, linens and anything else one would need for a weekend away from home. For a full list of what to bring, please visit http://www.keyleader.org/.

service CSH Recreational Therapy By Alex Gordon

character building

CSH stands for Children’s Specialized Hospital and is located in Toms River, NJ. CSH offers children from toddlers to teenagers both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation treatment. Key Club has a distinct privilege to be allowed to send volunteers there monthly. When MAST Key Club volunteers attend (every 3rd Thursday of the month), we participate in something called Recreational Therapy. We have the special opportunity to interact with the children and use different methods to stimulate their senses. We do activities from arts and crafts to watering the plants outside. Recreational Therapy at Children’s Specialized is a great volunteering opportunity that you will most definitely feel good about!

Salvation Army Bell Ringing By Leor Golan The Salvation Army is a large organization in which customers purchase very lowpriced necessities. People that are in need of these items and cannot afford to buy them at high-priced retail stores come here. To maintain the organization, donations of clothes and money are needed. This is where the MAST Key Club comes in. Every year in December, we receive buckets from The Salvation Army for people to put donations in. Then, we make our way to the AC Moore and ACME shopping center to sing Christmas Carols and ring bells to coerce shoppers to donate money. At the end of the day we present The Salvation Army with the collected money. Come out and join the cause on December 15th!

Eliminate Week By Ali Pham Last week, our school participated in spreading awareness and fundraising for The Eliminate Project. Maternal Neonatal Tetanus affects about 800 babies every five days. By working together, members our school can fight to end tetanus. A number of Key Club members volunteered to sell Eliminate hands last week during lunch. The hands can be seen hanging in the cafeteria. TGIFs around the state also participated to help the Eliminate Project. 20% of each bill, with a fundraising flyer, was donated to the event. This Eliminate event was a fun way to help our community and raise money simultaneously. A division wide Minute-to-Win-it contest will be run by LTG Tracy Vollbrecht on January 5th, 2013 and will be held at Brookdale Community College. The proceeds will go towards the Elimate Project.

Winter 2012 Issue Sandy Relief Efforts By Cory Ott On Monday afternoon, October 29th 2012, some of the worst effects of hurricane Sandy were felt in areas of New Jersey and New York. The storm itself was over 1000 miles in diameter and managed to combine with two other storm systems to create a massive super storm. This was the worst storm the north east has had in generations. The quantity of destruction was only matched by the quantity of help given to assist all of those that had been affected by the storm. Katie Henry and I assisted the UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) to help out with the damage caused by Sandy. We assisted in delivering cleaning supplies in buckets to a church in Lincroft, NJ. About 300 buckets were unloaded from the truck and put in the church. The rest of the truck (about 400-500 more buckets) were given to another church to assist in their

surrounding area. The MAST Community Affairs department collected toiletries and cleaning supplies for those in need. In this state of destruction, even toothpaste is a rare commodity to some. Keyport Kiwanis also assisted in the Thanksgiving Dinner which was run by The Keyport Elks Lodge and sponsored by Jersey Shore Subs. They had five different locations and many volunteers. Mashed potatoes, yams, turkey, ham, vegetables, biscuits and desert were served as Thanksgiving dinner. It is thanks to these volunteers along with countless others from all different states that people received the help they needed. The love and compassion was definitely noticed by the people receiving help. This demonstration of empathy truly lit up a dark time in many people’s lives on the Jersey Shore.
