THE SANDY KEYS May 2012 Issue The Par Garden By Becky D’Albero Every third Thursday of the month (this started back in April) a number of MAST Key Clubbers have come together at the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Tindall Road to help plant a garden. Within this garden, students are currently removing weeds and planting vegetables. Working on this garden is a fun experience plus it benefits many people. Students have the opportunity to volunteer outdoors while hanging out with their friend; the vegetables grown will go to feeding the hungry. All the food that is being grown in the garden will go the Lunch Break, in Red Bank. Lunch Break is a clothing and food donation center that provides aid to needy families in Monmouth County. Along with a donation center, the Lunch Break houses a soup kitchen that is always eager for volunteers! If any of you Key Clubbers out there are looking for some service hours or volunteer work over the summer, Lunch Break could always use some extra help! If anyone has any questions or would like more information, contact sophomore Marianna Fleming and she will be

Children’s Specialized Hospital Prom By Danielle Ciaurro

On Saturday, April 28th, the prom to be at was located at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Toms River. The Prom was organized by Division 8’s LTG Tracy Vollbrecht and Alex Gordon, along with the help of committees made up of Masties, they provided the event with dazzling decorations, decadent desserts, snacks, and entertaining activities. This year’s theme was Disney, so the decorations included pictures of Cinderella, Lilo and Stitch, Buzz Lightyear, and other beloved movie characters. A large background of the Cinderella Castle was hung up so pictures of the children could be taken for their families. Arts and crafts were set up, as well as a Tip-A-Troll game, Pin the Crown on Cinderella, and of course, there was dancing to Disney songs and…LIMBO! Many Masties came to help out and have a lot of fun! Each one was paired up with a child from the hospital. They spent the day with the

child and family members that chose to attend. All of the children at the hospital came; the boys in their fancy clothes and the girls in their beautiful dresses. They all had a blast. Needless to say, the CSH Prom was a huge success!

Kiwanis One Day By Alyssa van Doorn On Saturday May 5th a handful of MAST Key Club members and Keyport Kiwanis members came together to paint a house for The Kiwanis One Day. An elderly couple, located in Hazlet, NJ, needed help fixing up their house because they did not have the means to do it themselves. It was a fun day despite the occasional drizzle. Unfortunately, we were unable to finish painting the house. In the near future we will be returning to the house to finish. If there are any of you Key Clubbers out there in need of service hours, come help out! The Kiwanis One Day is a fun event with friends plus it helps the community.
Join In For JoAnn By Ali Pham Recently, our club has been involved in Join In for JoAnn. This organization is dedicated to help a special member of our community, JoAnn Fillipo, raise money for a liver transplant. At 42 years old, she is a mother of two boys named Dominic and Kevin. She is without health insurance; the cost of the medication for her life saving liver is $30,000. With the support of friends, families, and caring strangers, a committee of

about twenty people set out to save JoAnn’s life. One of our general members, Jon Tolen, was responsible for organizing MAST’s first ever Four Square Tournament. It was held outside Building 77 after school on Monday, May 7th. The first place winners, Charlie Mills and Adrian D’Averso, became the first team to have their names put on the four square trophy, which will be displayed in 77 forever. The tournament was a success and over $2,000 was raised for JoAnn. While volunteering one weekend, I met the Minervini family, close friends of Joann’s who were the founders of the Join In for JoAnn organization. They created fundraisers such as bagging at Shop Rite (which MASTies helped out with) and holding a dinner and gift auction at St. Clement’s Church. Within three months, Join in for Joann’s goal was met. This heartwarming story goes to show how our time and dedication to helping others can truly make a difference. May 2012 Issue Eliminate Project Progress By Leor Golan The ELIMINATE Project was created as a joint effort by Unicef and Kiwanis in order to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus from the world. The New Jersey District’s goal is $100,602.23. This money will be put toward the worldwide goal of 100 million dollars. In Key Club, every number of a goal has a meaning. The 100 stands for the 100 million mothers that have needed vaccines, the 60 stands for the 60 thousand infants that die each year as a result of this illness. The 2 for the outstanding organizations that have teamed up for the project, and the 23 represents the 23 divisions across the district working together for this purpose. So far, the global ELIMINATE project has raised 11.5 million dollars. Global organizations, along with many Key Club districts worldwide (including ours), are raising millions of dollars for the cause. The worldwide effort is continuting. To show how far we have come, the world has raised 11.5 million dollars in only a single month! At this rate, millions of people will be saved from neonatal tetanus within the year. It is up to us to keep the ELIMINATE project flame running. As a club we must raise as much money as we can in order to contribute to the worldwide project.
Key Clubber of the Month By Leor Golan During the month of May, one Key Clubber stood out from the rest of the club. Her name is Elizabeth McCormack. She was the president of the 2011-2012 service year. Elizabeth has attended every single event during the year and is arguably one of the most devoted and caring member of the club. To quote Mr. Ellithorpe, “She is the best president the M.A.S.T. Key Club has ever had.” This remark proves everything. During her service year, Elizabeth did everything she possible could for the club. Whether it is running and planning many events, or teaching the incoming president everything she needs to know, Elizabeth did it all. She truly deserves being the Key Clubber of the month.

Your Lieutenant Governor here! I hope all of you are enjoying the great kickoff to the service year that MAST has made! In just the past two months of the service year alone, MAST has continued to stand out in its dedication to service, completing 870 hours of service. As a MASTie myself, I know the impact that the MAST Key Club makes on both the community and its members. As for myself, I have definitely enjoyed the first fun, yet busy two months of the service year. After being inducted as Lieutenant Governor at District Convention at the end of March, I attended my first unofficial board meeting. I walked into the room and saw all 23 Lieutenant Governors and the Executive Board sitting around a table. Each Lieutenant Governor is in charge of a certain number of Key Clubs, just like I am. I’ll admit, I was overwhelmed. How was I supposed to keep a division of 7 Key Clubs, each with a large number of members, running smoothly while holding divisional events, keeping in correspondence with my other LTGs and the Exec Board, and publish newsletters every month? Yet somehow, here I am. I’ve already visited one club, published two newsletters, presented three workshops at Regional Training Conferences, and held four Officer Training Conferences. With planning and dedication, being Lieutenant Governor has become just as normal as counting one, two, three. As this service year continues, I hope that all of you keep up your dedication to service and try to attend my beach party, which will benefit the ELIMINATE project!
