Dear Friends,
Thank you for gracing us with your presence this afternoon. While Philadelphia may not be without its imperfections, it remains our cherished city—a place where growth, inspiration, and goodwill intertwine. We know that you share our unwavering belief in its potential.
Today, as we gather for the Celebrate Hope Annual Luncheon, we celebrate more than just an event. We honor community leaders who exemplify the very essence of compassion and dedication. These remarkable individuals not only champion The Salvation Army’s mission but also tirelessly work to provide hope for the most vulnerable among us. We encourage you to take a moment to learn about their remarkable achievements and extend your heartfelt congratulations to them.
Your boundless kindness and unwavering support ensure that our neighbors in need receive the assistance they rightfully deserve. Whether through sponsorship, ticket purchases, volunteering, or advocacy, you have made this event a reality.
As Co-Chairs of this year’s gathering, we are profoundly moved by the overwhelming support you have shown us. Our challenge to you is simple: continue standing alongside The Salvation Army throughout the year, in whatever capacity you can. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our community.
May today’s event bring joy, inspiration, and renewed hope to all.
Warm regards,

About Our Awards

"Others" Award
On Christmas, many years ago, the co-founder of The Salvation Army, General William Booth, wanted to send a message to his officers throughout the world. Legend has it that this message was sent in the form of a telegram that contained only one word: “Others.” It was his deepest desire for his officers to love, care for, and connect with others. To recognize those who best embody this unselfish devotion to others, The Salvation Army created the “Others” award.
Doing the Most Good Community Leadership Award
Evangeline Booth, daughter of the founders of The Salvation Army, was quoted as saying, “There is no reward equal to that of doing the most good for the most people in the most need.” During her 30-year tenure as National Commander of The Salvation Army in the United States, the organization experienced phenomenal growth. To recognize exceptional leadership, commitment, and spirit of serving those most in need, The Salvation Army presents the Doing the Most Good Community Leadership Award.
Eliza Shirley Women in Leadership Award In 1879, Eliza Shirley and her parents immigrated to Philadelphia, PA from England. Passion for her faith and service led 16-year-old Eliza to contact General William Booth, requesting that The Salvation Army’s mission be brought to the United States. Within a month of their arrival, Eliza and her family rented a building on the west side of Philadelphia and were preaching the gospel with a specific focus on helping the poor. Because of Eliza’s leadership and the women in leadership throughout our community today, The Salvation Army can continue to serve. To recognize those women in leadership who exemplify dedication to service, community, and faith, The Salvation Army created the Eliza Shirley Women in Leadership Award.
Greater Philadelphia
Housing Services
Emergency Housing Services
The Red Shield Family Residence is a therapeutic community, where the power of the group creates healthy norms, healthy interactions, and subsequently, a positive sense of well-being for all. The community allows members to focus on movement towards the achievement of goals, emotional stability, and the ultimate aspiration of self-sufficiency.
The Eliza Shirley House (ESH), centrally located at 1320 Arch Street, has been providing housing for families and children experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia for over 30 years. The facility has security cameras throughout the building, both inside and out, to enhance resident safety. ESH is a casemanaged emergency housing facility with 35 semi-private resident rooms for a capacity of 90 individuals.
Permanent Housing
Reed House provides housing and supportive services to single adults with histories of drug and/or alcohol abuse, serious & persistent mental health issues, and physical disabilities. Our services are available to single adults who have lived in Philadelphia's emergency housing programs, transitional housing programs for homeless persons, those who come from institutions such as substance abuse treatment facilities, and inpatient mental health programs. The program serves both men and women.
Our residential community is an environment dedicated to supporting individuals in achieving self-sufficiency. Our staff are compassionate and have a heart for helping the vulnerable population live independently.
Senior Housing
The Salvation Army operates two residence apartment complexes for senior citizens in Philadelphia, exclusively for individuals age 62 years or older and who qualify under U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines as being low income: Booth Manor and Ivy Residence.

Both residences are independent living facilities which provide individual apartments to seniors (individuals or couples), as well as comprehensive supportive services. Tenants at The Salvation Army senior housing units pay 30 percent of their adjusted gross income for rent, and HUD pays the balance.
Currently, The Salvation Army senior citizen houses serve more than 200 residents each year using a long-term supportive housing model for older adults. On-site social services programming provides an array of activities and case management interventions, which support older adults to remain self-sufficient.
Housing for Victims of Human trafficking
New Day New Home (NDNH) is a long-term transitional living program that prepares women who have been forced into human trafficking for a new life of independence and self-sufficiency. By being trauma-informed and following the Sanctuary Model, the New Day New Home promotes emotional, mental, spiritual, and social well-being and aims to provide individuals the tools they will need to make safe and positive choices.
New Day New Home believes that women are the experts of their story and aims to create a space where they can work toward reclaiming control over their lives. It provides a safe space and home to support the transition of young women from a life of commercial sexual exploitation to self-sufficiency and freedom.

Friends of The Salvation Army:
On behalf of the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia, thank you. Thank you for showing up today and every other day that you have given your time, resources, and donations to The Salvation Army. We are so honored that you see value in what we do.
While this year may have felt more normal than the last, The Salvation Army’s housing programs are experiencing a significant strain on their resources. The affordable housing crisis has flooded shelters with individuals and families who have nowhere else to go. In 2023 alone, The Salvation Army provided almost 1 million meals and over 190,000 nights of shelter to Philadelphia’s most vulnerable citizens. But it was still not enough. This is why we have called on so many of you across the last few months—we cannot “Do the Most Good” without your support. We thank you for helping The Salvation Army remain for as long as there is a need, despite the challenges our city is facing.
In addition to meals and housing, The Salvation Army does more than you may realize. It provides emergency disaster services, assistance to human trafficking victims, personal comfort and clothing items to those in need and grocery items, toys and gifts to families during the holiday season. We invite and encourage you to learn more about our programs and services by speaking to an officer today, signing up to volunteer, or engaging with our back-to-school and holiday collection drives.
I am grateful for the opportunity to lead our board and I’m excited to see what The Salvation Army can do with your help.
Sincerely,

The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia

Creating Our Third Century
Two centuries ago, we set out to transform medicine. We did that, and so much more – by seeing things others can’t, and reimagining things others don’t. For two hundred years we’ve been redefining possible in higher education and health care by pushing beyond conventions and always asking, why not? As we write our story for our third century, one thing’s for sure ... you ain’t seen nothing yet!

The Army Behind the Army The Army Behind Army
The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia works with some of the most disadvantaged people in our communities, including the homeless, the elderly, the unemployed, those suffering from drug & alcohol addiction, and victims of human trafficking. But this would not be possible without our network of volunteers, ‘the army behind the Army’, almost 3.3 million strong nationwide.

But this would not be possible without our network of volunteers, ‘the army behind the Army’, almost 3.3 million strong nationwide.
Whatever your individual skill level or area of interest, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved: from serving meals to people who would otherwise go without, running activities and classes in one of our many Corps Community Centers, or even providing practical and technical support to aid unemployed individuals to get back into the workforce. Your skills are in much demand, but the rewards of serving others are far greater—whether it’s seasonal, once a week, or anything in between, you would be joining a network of millions from across the world committed to “Doing the Most Good” in partnership with The Salvation Army.
