I think it’s agreed we’re all big fans of simple plan and four years strong, we like all time low, boys like girls. But there are some differences with each member - I like Brand New, Silverstein, Linkin Park, Budgie, metallica ETC whilst the other guys enjoys similar but they like Parkway Drive, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullett For My Valentine and other heavier acts too.

Wha t a g e d i d y o u s t a r t your b a n d ?

The Q ui cki e Ro und : I f y o u c ould be a superhero what w o u l d your name be? And des c r i b e t he costume? L o r d O f The Rings, because it’s t o t a l l y like an epic journey. F a v o u r i te pizza topping? Or f o od ? A n y t h i ng other than Mince and P o t a t o e s... F a v o u r i te song ever? R o b b i e William, No Regrets F u n n i e st on stage moment? N/A

D e s c r i b e the style of your band? We just play music how we want to play it, we have fun and we’re basically just like a wee family of rockers and men with knockers...LOL!

W h o w ould your music ap peal to?

I think, our music is for everyone, whether or not you like rock, because the music is catchy and the lyrics just totally deal with what happens in peoples liv es. We’ve got anger sadness

We’re all at different ages, but the ages of us are:......

Why d i d y o u d e c i d e t o star t a b a n d ?

We all love music, it’s just something that we all grew up with. The twins and I had Music and Sound Production at college and we just jammed with music and so the course was about to finish so we all decide stuff it, we’ll start a band. I guess for me it was the sheer fun of it, the lads are brilliant guys, couldn’t ask for better mates to be in a band with. It’s a total funfest with us like, there’s ups and downs but at the end of the day we’re doing what we love to do.

Was it a s u b j e c t y o u e n j o y e d at schoo l ? N/A for me

How did y o u a l l m e e t ?

Me and the twins were in the same course at college, I met the other two guys through the twins.

Have yo u c h a n g e d t h e b a n d ’s name be f o r e , I f s o w h a t w a s the idea b e h i n d t h e o n e y o u chose?

It’s was talked about and talked about, w e eventually went with

Stand For All, (for me) because it can mean many things, standing for what you beleive in, standing for better music, we’re standing up for everyone who doesn’t have a voice, standing because we’re sick of sitting down. I hope, that people hear our music and think, that’s my angry song or that’s the song I’m playing in my head when I’m sad.

Which songs do you perform most frequently? We all love playing Change because it’s just a good catchy tune, !Attack! is a more thrashy one, we play that one a lot because we can just go totally mental with it, last band practice I ended up screaming a wee bit of it to get some anger out the system...it’s a great tune.

Do you have any that are big hits with the crowd?

A lot of people hav e said they love Change, so we’ll be playing a lot more of that song soon.

W h a t ’s y o u r u l t i m a t e d i r e ct i o n f o r y o u r b a n d, f a m e a n d fortune?

For me, it’s neither. There’s some epic music in the band, there’s RAW talent which you won’t ever see on TV and i personally just want people to enjoy our music, whether it be 1 person or 6 billion people.

When you write music, which member comes up with the lyrics? All of us make the music and the lyrics, I guess it’s all just being part of the family! =)

H o w c a n m y r e a d e r s g a i n a ccess to your music? Is it free? Just view have more

New b a n d o n the scene! Meet Bio : Last Minute Exit Plan was originally started by primar y composer Liam Docherty and a close friend of his Connor Muirhead. on a night out in livingston they met their future bass guitarist Mark Musil. They originally started as a three piece band with Liam on guitar and vocals, Connor on drums and Mark on bass, after several practises they recrui ted lead guitarist Jason who was at school with Liam and Connor. The band spent their early months writing and rewriting songs to get they ’re sound down to a tee. The band played several gigs in and around Edinburgh to get their name out and their sound known. Unfortunately due to personal circumstances Jason left the band. The band decided to continue as a three piece. After some saving and putting together some cash made at the previous Edinburgh gigs they decided to concentrate more on the business and professionalism of the band and recruited their manager and booking agent Nathan Brown. The band will be tr ying to gig as often as possible to get their name known and their music heard by all. Chris: Every time I play guitar or sing it sounds like there is someone else doing the same, but higher. How do you promote yo ur band and shows? Chris: Word of Mouth, Facebook. 1 of us should try what Paris Hilton did to promote herself although I’m not sure we’d have the same success... Describe your show, visual and musically? Chris: Visually I don’t know, I always seem to have my eyes shut when singing. Musically amazing... Does the crowds input help? Chris: Yes. What has been your biggest obstacle so far? And how did you get past it? Chris: Getting gigs as an unknown band. Went for a drive around pubs/clubs with demo CD’s of ourselves and harassed landlords/ landladies. It’s a shame it works. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there? Chris: Next shows are unconfirmed at the moment but if you check out ‘The Ferns’ on facebook we keep it up to date with any gigs coming up. Reason to be there is you’re likely to see quite a few songs you’ve never seen done by two guys with acoustic guitars. Describe your bedroom (colour/ bed cover/posters ect)? Chris: Similar to Josef Fritzl’s. Stu: It’s where the magic happens Any last words? Chris: I was joking bedroom. Stu: I wasn’t

D a m n , i t ’s b e e n h e c t i c until Chris came along; he really pulled through for us. K y o : T h e E P w o r k i s g o i n g s o ea s y ! C h r i s has really turned this band around. Since the last time we were featured in this magazine, we’ve created a full song and started work on another original track, as well as re-covering Much Like Falling ( F l y l e a f ) a n d s t a r t i n g w o r k o n S o F a r Aw a y

( A 7 X ) ! Hopefully we can have the EP o u t t h i s y e ar, or maybe more with the way w e ’ r e g o i n g ! Who knows? C h r i s : Working on the EP has been r e a l l y g o o d , and actually quite easy so far. We ’ r e a l l j u s t chucking ideas around and se e i n g w h a t f i ts the sound we’re going for, a n d b r i n g i n g a load of different things toge t h e r. H o p e f u lly we’ll end up with some p r e t t y g o o d s ounds at the end of it all! D o u g i e : Have we done an EP yet…? H o w w ould you describe your music? R i k u : H mm…. Gra b a bottle of vodka, s o m e p o s t - h ardcore riffs, some Japanese ly r i c s , a nd a bunch of nutters, stir them toge t h e r, a nd t h e re’s your answer. K y o : I f you know what the Japanese l y r i c s a r e a l l about, I’d say our music is r e a l l y e m o t i o nal. I pull all my lyrics from pers o n a l e x p e r i e nce, and everything I write a b o u t i s s o m ehow a reflection of my life. Ev e n i f s om e t h ing doesn’t affect me personall y, i f I h av e s een something happen then I will w r i t e a bo u t i t. Music is in the heart of every t h i n g a nd e v eryone; yo u just have to searc h f o r i t . T h a t ’s what my lyrics are like, you h a v e t o s e a r ch for the hidden meanings! D o u g i e : Rock, me tal, funk… Soul. W h o would you say are your gre a t e s t i n f l u e n ces and who do you particu l a r l y a dm i r e right now in the industry? K y o : F amous people? Isshi. Enough s a i d . B u t r e a listically, I would have to say th a t m y

b i g g e s t i n f l u e n c e i s s o c i e t y. T h e a m o u n t o f emotion every person displays in one day is truly an inspiration. I’ve seen people start t h e d a y h a p p y, g e t r e a l l y p i s s e d o f f , t h e n go get legless at the pub to make up for it (thus become stupidly happy) and then feeling crap the next day from a hangover! J u s t g o e s t o s h o w, y o u o b s e r v e a h u m a n long enough and you can draw inspiration even from the dullest of them! Chris: My influences are largely punk rock, bands like Rise Against, Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX. Right now I’d probably s a y Ti m M c I l r a t h ( R i s e A g a i n s t s i n g e r ) i s someone I really admire, because all his music has a real meaning and message behind it. It isn’t just singing about a girl he knew when he was 16, its about raising awareness of various issues and wrongs in the world, and using his position to try and make a difference rather than just for self promotion. Dougie: Flea! To u r i n g – l o v e i t o r h a t e i t ? K y o : We h a v e n ’ t s t a r t e d t o u r i n g y e t , b u t w h e n w e d o I ’ m s u r e i t ’s g o i n g t o b e m i x e d emotions. I’m going to hate being away from my Mom and my pets, but it’ll be an awesome experience at the same time! Chris: Haven’t done it yet, but really looking forward to it! What was the best gig you’ve ever played, and what was the worst? K y o : We s t i l l h a v e n ’ t s t a r t e d t o g e t g i g s ,

C o u l d you briefly describe the music-m a k i n g p r o c e s s? And how you come up with y o u r lyrics? R i k u : We all just play and the lyrics co m e t o K y o n a turally. K y o : … yeah, what he said! *laughs* I d o n ’ t k no w r eally, I draw from what people s a y. R i k u q uoted some random song at me, a n d I s t a r t e d writing lyrics completely unrel a t e d ! T h i n g s just trigger my mind, and out f l y t h e words! Its all just playing ar o u n d w i t h d i fferent things until you come up w i t h s om e t h ing you all like the sound of. Ly r i c s I l e a v e to Kyo. D o u g i e : Play with my bass until some t h i n g c om e s out… But it sounds wrong when I p u t i t t h a t way! I f y o u could do a cover of any song, w h a t s on g w ould you choose and why? R i k u : S o Far Away as a tribute to The R e v K y o : S omething by Kagrra or LM.C! C h r i s : At the moment I’d choose “ A l l S i g n s Point to Lauderdale” by A Da y To R e m e m ber...I just love the band and t h e s on g , a nd its a pretty fun one to play. D o u g i e : Not sure there’s just one, b u t I g u e s s my favourite right now is Tortu r e M e b y R H CP. W h a t s ong do you get requests for the m o s t ? W h a t w ould be your ideal date? R i k u : April 24th because it’s not too c o l d a nd n o t too warm *laughs* K y o : U hm… Anything with Riku! I don’t w a n t t o e v e r date again, unless it’s a cute d a t e t o Wa g a m ama with my fiancé. C h r i s : A lot of drinking and an epic g i g . . . I t w o u l d really tell me if I could be w i t h s om e o ne - if they don’t like good musi c a n d p u t u p with me when we’re drunk, it pro b a b l y i s n ’ t g oing to work! D o u g i e : My girlfriend… So a Mexican h o t t i e ! W h a t s ong reminds you of the first tim e y o u f e l l i n l ove? ( I t ’s u p to you if you want this to be s w e e t o r n a u ghty) R i k u : E arly Mourning by Alesana

K y o : E a r l y M o u r n i n g . O r Wa i t F o r Yo u b y Atreyu. The two songs I listened to over and over after I came back from becoming engaged! Chris: Punk Rock Princess” by Something Corporate...it was a song that, at the time, s e e m e d l i k e i t w a s a l l a b o u t h e r. Dougie: Hysteria by Muse. Do you have posters up on your room walls? R i k u : To n n e s o f M a t t Tu c k p o s t e r s ( n o t m y choice) K y o : Ye a h … I u s e d t o b e o b s e s s e d w i t h M a t t Tu c k . My girlfriend tries to sneak a few of her posters up, but its pretty much just Bad Religion, NOFX, Less Than Jake, Distillers and bands like that. Dougie: Um, blue, posters everywhere, massively cluttered. What is the weirdest gift you have received from a fan? Riku: Umm, nothing really K y o : We ’ v e o n l y r e a l l y r e c e i v e d s i g n s o n vampirefreaks… The best one had to have been from our friend Sarah, who made Riku and I a “Happy Anniversary” sign, it was epic! W h a t ’s b e e n t h e h i g h l i g h t f o r y o u s o f a r, a n d do you have any regrets? Riku: The highlight has been, having the chance to work with the greatest guys in the world…the band. Kyo: If you can honestly tell me the point in having regrets, I’ll tell you what mine would be. Everything in life is worth something, so w h y r e g r e t i t ? I ’ v e h a d s o m e q ue s t i o n a b l e relationships in the past, but if I hadn’t been so messed about… I wouldn’t have been

In term s o f h i g h l i g hts… I’d have to say finding a b e t t e r l i n e - u p . Since Chris has joined, the ban d h a s b e e n t a ken to a much higher level. D o u g i e : our original line-up is a bit o f a r e g r e t , I don’t think we’ve had enough g i g s a n d s t uff for any highlights to stick ou t . W h a t c an we expect in the future from y o u ? R i k u : A lot more stuff, tours, gigs… i c e c r e a m s ? Parties… lots of parties. K y o : E pic winning. So what if som e o n e p u t s y o u down? Do you think Einstein w o u l d h a v e g iven up if someone challenge d h i s t h e o r y ? Would The Rev have quit Ave n g e d i f s o m e one said they thought his drum m i n g s u c k e d ? No, because they believe d i n t h e m s e lves. Just imagine what you c o u l d d o i f y ou believe in yourself, or even j u s t t o p r o ve that you can do something . I ’ m s t i c k i n g to what I believe, and I’m g i v i n g t h i s b a nd everyth ing I have got. At th e e n d o f t h e day, it’s your opinion that count s . How did you choose the name of your band Have you changed the band’s name before? The band name comes from a film called “Commando” - Val Verde is a fictional South American country (it’s actually used in several movies) and we really liked the sound of it. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences? It’s really difficult for any band to try to put themselves into a category we don’t really think that we fit into any of the typical genres. However, if you twisted my arm I would say we are somewhere between rock and indie.

When did you form your band? Ryan, Kenny and I (Robbie) have been playing together since we were about 14. Kyle joined the band about six years ago and Maggie arrived just

before Christmas last year. It’s taken a while to get the line up right but we feel that we have a really good mix in the band now.

What inspired you to make music together? I think that any band is inspired by the music that they hear. Music has been such a big part of our lives and we still try to surprise each other with new bands. We have been influenced and inspired by so many bands and it’s hard to pick out any particular inspiration but I suppose we would look to bands such as Radiohead, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, R.E.M. and Gomez. They were a huge part of our lives when we were forming the band. Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

We have played at so many venues but our favourites would have to be P.J. Molloys in Dunfermline (our home venue), King Tut’s in Glasgow and playing at Murrayfield Stadium was very special. Our next gig was at Electric Circus in Edinburgh on Friday 9 September.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together? When we first started out we were very experimental but there was a lack of direction. As we have matured as a band, our music has become more accessible and a lot tighter. Are you seeking fame and fortune? No. We are seeking success. Fame and fortune are bi-products of success. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Name: Robbie Guitar and Synth Age: 27 My favourite thing in the whole world is reading I really hate arrogance I have a pet tarantula But I would like a pet snake My favourite colour is blue I love eating steak Name: Kyle Drums Age: 26 My favourite thing in the whole world is Spotify. I really hate liars. I have a pet dog. But I would like a pet tortoise. My favourite colour is brown. I love eating egg and bacon sandwiches.

e d r e Do it and keep at it as long as you are enjoying it. If it becomes a chore it’s time to pack it in.

How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Our music is available on iTunes and you can also listen to it on our MySpace page www.myspace.com/ thevalverde. Do you guys have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music? Playing football, watching films, reading and motocross. What’s your most embarrassing experience? A few years ago we were playing a gig in the Clyde Bar and it ended up like a scene from Spinal Tap: The stage was really small and I turned around and bashed Ryan’s microphone stand with my guitar. The guitar went out of tune, the mic stand fell

over and then one member of the band (who will remain nameless) leaned against what they thought was a wall, but was actually a door, and went crashing through into a store room. That was pretty embarrassing, but these things happen and you have to laugh about them. What’s your dream holiday? Going to Ibiza to play Ibiza Rocks. What is your music background: We have quite a varied taste in music and listen to anything from Daft Punk to Metallica to The Beatles. We don’t really care about genres - if the music is good we’ll give it a listen.

Name: Ryan Vocals & guitar Age: 26 My favourite thing in the whole world is comedy. I really hate laziness. I have a pet (no pet) But I would like a pet dog My favourite colour is gun metal grey I love eating star bars Name: Kenny Bass Age: 27 My favourite thing in the whole world is beer and lime cordial. My favourite colour is beige. I love eating half pizza suppers.

What are your songs about? We’d rather leave it up to the listener to decide what they think the songs are about. If you could play on your dream tour, what bands would be on it supporting you? Radiohead and Arcade Fire Any last words? We would urge people to check us out on MySpace and if they like what they hear they should try to get along to a live show

Val Verde Supporting Folks Re v i e w a t t h e E l e c t r i c Circus in E d i n b urgh 9th September 2011

Our ticket confirmation had the start time of 7.00pm and we arrived bang on time. However, when we entered the venue, there was no-one else there and the bands were still doing sound checks and setting up. So I just got a drink from the bar and watched the sound checks until the venue started to fill up

The Merrylees

At around 8.15, The Merrylees, from Edinburgh were first on stage. They have a very unique sound, a kinda blend of Hill-billy meets rock n roll. To top of their unique sound, they have a quirky 60’s look to them. Even a few parka boys turned up to watch them. A real guitar based sound bouncing from lead to bass to acoustic and encompassing all three, while simultaneously speeding up and slowing down the tempo. There was even the distinct sound of Spanish guitar springing up every now and then. They played five tracks, each one as good as the next. I can’t think of anyone else out there that I could compare them to, they are so unique!!

Val Verde

Around 9.00pm Val Verde, a five piece indie/rock band from Dunfermline were up. Last time I saw the band was at Knockhill at the BMW motorrad weekend. It was freezing that day and blowing a gale. The weather that day kind of spoiled what should have been a very enjoyable event. Regular Rockette readers will remember I missed them at Murrayfield when they supported Bon Jovi. They have a very cool sound, with an up-beat sound a little like “U2”. They also have a bit of electro pop occasionally thrown in from the keyboard which gives their overall sound a bit of a twist.

They opened their set with “Because all Your Friends Where Idiots”. This track was amazing and was totally appreciated by the crowd. I was pleased for the band that there was a better crowd than at Mottorad, because they deserve to play to bigger crowds than the freezing weather had allowed previously. Next up was “Home” this had an early Snow patrol feel to the music and was from one of the bands older EP’s. “A Little More Colour now” was their third song of the evening, taken from their new EP. That was followed by a new song “Stardust”. I’m a big fan of this track and I was singing along, so it must be easy to pick up!! It’s easy to see why they were picked to support Bon Jovi. The band was getting pretty sweaty by this point, “Good Morning UK” was a good track and it was the only track of theirs I hadn’t heard before. Closing their set tonight was “Glass Girl in a Cage” this is my favourite song by the band. The song

30

has a very “Kings of Leon” sound, with a hint of “Goo Goo Dolls” thrown in.

Overall the band had a very good performance; in fact every single track was brill!! Can’t wait to go to their next show! After they packed up their stuff, they came over for a chat before taking off. I also asked Ryan for his set list, he said he was sorry it’s a bit sweaty, but I kept it anyway, Yuk!!

Folks

It was 9.45pm when the last band of the night and headline act “Folks” came on. A much faster paced band who are making a name for themselves. They are a six piece band from Manchester and have a lot more of a “middle of the road feel”. There is also a slight hint of “The Monkees” about them. Maybe that was just the tambourine their lead vocalist was playing, just like Davy Jones used to. The vocals were good throughout and unlike the Monkees who repeatedly didn’t play their own instruments, Folks can certainly knock out a tune. All their tracks were fast upbeat numbers but somehow, they even managed to up the pace even more during their fifth track. It was high octane stuff. They returned to their previous high-speed tempo for the sixth track. Their final track though opened sounding like “the clash – London’s burning” it kept up the theme throughout, with the band really bouncing. A thoroughly enjoyable set!

M e e t...

Josh E lki n g t o n , 1 9 . D o e s t h e f r o n t m a n thing, singing, playing guitar. I also manage the band. Phil Craw f o r d, 2 0 . L e a d g u i t a r a n d a b i t of singing. David Bic h e n o - S a m w ay s, 1 8 . D r u m s. Jamie Wa r e, 1 8 . B a s s.

How did you come up with the name for your band? Was it your First choice? Josh’s mum came up with it! Which probably isn’t cool to say, but we had no bloody idea what to call ourselves, everything else is taken. But it fits, we’re a fast rock band.

someone else would be in so they can relate to it, but of course they are all linked in some way to things that have happened to me. Josh: Yeah, there’s no fun in writing about a really specific situation that no one can relate to.

Did you have any other band names in mind? Dave wanted The Sunshine Conspiracy, which is a pretty cool name.

What’s your favourite song to perform? Josh: My favourite to sing is a song of ours called ‘Can’t Start’, because it’s a bit of a belter, a head turner. It has the best, rocking riff we’ve got and a hell of a powerful chorus, it’s a bitch to sing live because it’s a lot of loud, constant singing but it’s fun as hell to pull off. Phil: ‘Maybe It’s You’, because I don’t really have anything hard to play so I can go a bit mental with it! Dave: ‘Can’t Start’, because I can go all out on it Jamie: ‘Can’t Start’.

How long have you known each other? We all met in college in Portsmouth about two and a half years ago in a Music Technology course. How did your band start? Well yeah, all met in college doing music. We all jammed together and had to do covers for the course, had a laugh, it sounded good so it went from there really! Josh and Phil have been writing songs for a long while though so it took off pretty quickly, they’ve been biding their time. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Getting equipment to gigs, always a pain in the arse. As a new band how much of a challenge has it been in the industry? It’s generally quite hard to play rock to a scene who have expected indie music as the standard, but a lot of people have loved it so it’s not too bad. When you write your lyrics, what inspires you? Josh: Whatever the hells going on in my head/life at that moment, or sometimes concepts. Depends on the music, I get a feeling what the song should be about when I hear the song without the lyrics. Phil: I put myself in a position that

What where your musical influences growing up? Josh: Rock and Robbie Williams. My cool older sister gave me ‘The Colour and the Shape’ (Foo Fighters), All Killer No Filler (Sum 41), a Limp Bizkit CD and a skater rock compilation CD to set me on the right path. I got into a lot of Sabbath when I was about 13, they were my first love. Phil: American Pop Punk, like Blink 182 and All Time Low because I love their energy. Dave: My cousin... she was always better than me at everything, so I thought there must be one thing I can beat her at. Jamie: Old rock! Who is your favourite band at the moment? Josh: Foo Fighters, don’t see that changing any time soon. Phil: All Time Low Dave: Old Biffy

Jamie: Queens of the Stone Age How long have you been playing (any) instruments? Josh: About 5 or 6 years? I only really play guitar as a means to write and play songs though, i’ve got no real ambition of being Jimmy Page, as fun as that would be. Phil: This and that for 6 years. Dave: Only about 4 years actually! But I don’t do much else Jamie: About the same with bass, four years. But i’ve been playing guitar for about 6 If you could add any other band member from anywhere in the world, who would it be and why? Josh: David Eric Grohl. The best icing for any cake. Phil: Alex Gaskarth, ‘cause he’s an amazing singer. Dave: Travis Barker, just because he’s an absolute tank. Jamie: Hayley Williams, to add a bit of sex appeal to the band! Dave: What are you on about mate, i’m the sex appeal! What lyric, either your own or someone else’s has a specific meaning to you? Josh: Our song ‘Everything’ has a lot of personal meaning to me. Every line is based on a stage of my life a few years back, it’s a few years old now though, I used to be quite uncomfortable singing it. There’s a lot of Foo Fighters, Sublime and Blackalicious lines that mean a lot to me aswell. Dave: ‘With a heart attack on your plate, you were looking back on your days, how you spent them all in a blur, and they asked if you were for sure’. (Favourite Food by Tokyo Police Club) Because it references to bad experiences to your past and you have to think about things you’re gonna

If you were a TV/cartoon character who would you be and why? Josh: Del Boy, he can talk his way out or into anything. Dave: Rodney.. cause i’m just as simple as he is. Jamie: Charlie Sheen, get all the bitches! You remind me of the girl from the Big Bang Theory Dave. Phil: I’m gonna say... Quagmire. He gets away with everything. If you were a superhero, which ONE special power would you have? Josh: Time manipulation. Could get a lot of shit done. Phil: To be able to fly, because I can’t be arsed to walk everywhere. Dave: Gotta be the Hulk... can’t get anything passed that man, you hurt him, he just gets stronger! Jamie: Dunno... whatever the Human Torch has. Fire and flying, sounds pretty good!

have to change to grow individually as a person. Yeah, i’m deep as fuck! Jamie: ‘Slow down everyone, you’re moving too fast’ by Jack Johnson. ‘Cause everyone needs to chill out most of the time! What type of music do you really not like? Shit music. We like good music of all types. Lots of people are quick to hassle Rap, Indie, Hip Hop or whatever because of the stuff they hear on the radio, but every genre has some stinkers, just as every genre has great music. X-factor, love or loathe and why? Josh: I kinda hate it. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of talent on the show, some of those people have increeeeedible voices, but the show itself hassles you with their sob stories, it’s like a soap really. Crying to a promoter won’t get you a gig in the real world. Phil: Hate it. It brings out people who can actually sing but puts them in a position that loses any credibility by covering other peoples songs. Doesn’t give them much room to do anything really creative until they win and everyone is already sick of them. Josh: Yeah, that T-Mobile Unsigned thing was alright where bands and solo artists had to play songs they’d actually written. Plus, Alex James from Blur was on it, which always helps. Jamie: Loathe. It’s all too overproduced and fake-sounding. What do you do to relax? Josh: Stay in bed all day. Jamie: Go out and drink! Have a laugh with my mates. Phil: Spend time with the missus. Dave: Have a sit down at home with a fag and beer, that’ll sort me out for the day.

What have been your experiences of “celebrity life”. What are the perks/ negative sides of fame? Josh: We’ve had people come up to us individually in the local pubs and that and complement us on the band, which is always awesome, shows you’re doing something right. A girl asked me and Phil to sign her hand after a show not long ago which was a bit surreal. Jamie: I played strip table football with a barmaid. Dave: Random guy said he liked the band i’m in and bought me drinks all night! Josh: Then he gave you his phone number, right? Do you have any exciting shows coming up: We’ve actually just finished a mental summer gigging spree of the South, around Portsmouth and in Guildford and Fareham and places like that, but we do have a few shows coming up that are on our facebook page to check out. We’re now focusing on finishing off our debut album which should be available for a few quid physically or

digitally in a month or two, there’ll be a big album launch gig for that actually in our home town, Portsmouth. We’ve just finished mastering the headline track from it, ‘Can’t Start’, which will be up alongside a music video soon on our facebook page. Who would you like to tour with? Josh: Dinosaur Pile-Up and/or Nine Black Alps. They’re more heroes to me for what we’re doing at the moment because they’re proving that you can still tour rock as a new band. Jamie: Queens of the Stone Age. They’re shows are amazing and they seem like a lot of fun, I reckon you could have a good laugh with ‘em. Phil: You Me At Six, because they’re my favourite British based band. Dave: Kings of Leon, because not only are they an excellent band, they all seem like sound people. They put on an amazing show. Finally, where do you HOPE to be in a year’s time? And where do you think you will ACTUALLY be? Josh: I’d hope and pray to all the gods that we’d be on an indie label, touring in any way, making records and playing shows, a small appearance at a festival would be sick, making enough money to eat and get drunk. Where will we actually be? I’ve honestly no idea. Could go either way like everything does, but i’m enjoying myself right now. We’re getting a lot of international listens at the moment so if we’re offered to play out of the country we definitely will. Jamie: Well, I hope in a years time we’ll be playing some kind of festival, in little tents, that’d be nice. Actually? Just getting bigger gigs I guess. Dave: Hopefully touring around Europe, possibly America. But, probably stay here and cain the South, play a load of gigs here. Phil: I’d like us to be on a UK tour. Actually? Probably in the cellar practising (laughs) Nah, just playing bigger shows more often, who knows, might be able to coattail a band on tour, we’re up for it!

Bio: Komodo was an accidental band formed out of three inebriated friends by the river side. We were all having an in-depth discussion about Komodo dragons and their use in today ’s civillised society when we realised the name Komodo would f it perfectly if we were to start a band. Taking our own advice we started a band with a mission to play half decent music as unique and best as possible. We like play a memorable show full of random antics and hag banter, with each show different to previous ones. “Rockstars with slight stardom” we are aiming to keep music real, in the moment and banterous! Many great friends and memories are made on the road! As a band what do you most love about being on stage? Mookie: I love getting to give to fans what you can’t fit in a CD, like atmosphere and presence. Moo moo: - Personally I love being the furthest away from all t he fans! Peaches: - Dude that ’s not ver y nice! I don’t actually like playing live ver y much but y ’know ... We want to know how you prepare for a show. And do you have any exciting shows coming up: If we are keeping it truthful, we usually prepare for a show with a couple of beers and some shots, to tr y and get in the merr y zone needed to play music for a band that was created out of substance abuse! We leave the heav y seshing till after the show, but before h and if we can get a little drunk it always ends well! We are hoping to tour Europe next year with dates in Holland, Germany, France, Spain and Italy! Any other news you would like to share? Our Debut Album is to be recorded this December after a week in seclusion, so keep an eye out for that! Presently we have a 4 track E.P. recorded in just 3 hours available on facebook and MySpace, however if you email one of us through the band page on facebook we could send out a hard copy Have a hag day gringo’s! Peace, Love and Empathy! Komodo.

mix I suppose. We’re one of those bands who all have ver y different tastes in music. Why did you decide to start a band, and was it a long process? We’ve all loved listening and playing music for a whi le, so it seemed like a good idea. It actually took us about 3 years or something to finalise the lineup and get gig ging though, so yeah you could say it was a ver y long process. However, once Adam and Louie joined we only had a month until our first gig , so we had to get our act together fast.

How did you all meet? School. Louie and Amber have known each other since P1 and Euan and Andy met in nurser y. Louie and Adam met in S1 and then it all came together in fifth year!

Has this ever changed? Louie: Probably “Going to Pasalacqua” by Green Day or “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen. Something like that

but I feel bad for not choosing something by Queen or Bob Dylan. Amber: Any thing by Panic! at the Disco. Andy: My favourite song ever is ‘A Modern Way of Letting Go’ by Idlewild. It ’s 2 and a half minutes long , and it ’s just a good rock out, but I absolutely love it. Euan: ‘Letterbomb’ by Green Day. Adam: ‘ You Don’t Understand Me’ by the Raconteurs. Funniest on stage moment you have had? During the third song of our first concert, Euan broke a guitar string and had to borrow a guitar from another one of the bands. This incident occurred due to the fact that he’s a numpty. Big thanks to Xavier and Patrick for helping us out! Finally, when and where will you be playing next? Our nex t gig lined up is on the 30th of October, at Electric

Circus in Ed i n b u rg h . It ’s a Hallowee n fa n c y dress gig , a n d t i c ket s are £4. It s h o u l d b e a great night !

Have you changed the band’s nam e b efo re , if so what was the idea behind th e o n e you chose? The name of the band wasn’t a ve r y l o n g process for us, it involved us sittin g i n D ave ’s bedroom bouncing ideas off each o t h e r u nt i l Steve said; ‘ White Light Theor y ’ a n d BO O M ! Here we are!

Wh o a re you r m a j or influences in the indus tr y at t h e m o m e nt? We a re a l l i nf l u enced by different things bu t b a n d s l i ke A l kaline Trio, Blink-182 and Su m 4 1 b r i n g u s together. We don’t believe in g u i l t y p l e a s u re s and we’ll dance to Rick Ast l ey i f we wa nt to!

Do you have any song that wasn’t a h i t w i t h the crowd? We had a gig in Glasgow that we b o o ke d l a st minute to help out a friend, we b ro u g ht 4 people and 2 of them left before we sta r te d to play. There’s something abou t h e a r i n g two people clap that ’s really unsett l i n g . T h e bar staff must have had a right la u g h at u s jumping around in front of no-one .

Why d i d yo u d e c i de to start a band? We a l l j u st l i ve a nd breath music so i t was a p rett y e a sy d e c i sion for us to be in bands. We ’re a l l g re at friends too so choosing me m b e rs wa s n ’ t hard. How d i d yo u a l l m eet? We a l l m et at a Neil Diamond concert back in ‘ 7 8 .

If you could be a superhero what wo u l d yo u r name be? And describe the costum e ? We’d be the fantastic four, Condy i s b i g a n d tough, Steve is tall and skinny like S t retc h , Stevie lights fires for fun and Dave i s a we e blonde girl! What ’s your ultimate direction fo r yo u r band, is it fame and fortune? We just like to have fun and play gigs whenever we can. I suppose fame and fortu n e wo u l d be nice, Stevie gets recognised eve r y w h e re he goes because he used to mode l j u m p e rs for Happit.

The doors were finally flung open at 8.30pm and the masses made their way into the large hall which was set out in a cabaret style with tables and chairs and a large dance floor in front of the stage area. Subtle lig hting and masses of twinkling wall lights gave the venue a ver y pleasant atmosphere. I was fortunate enough to be seated at the VIP tables, so I didn’t have to mix with the regular riff-raff (ha ha). Perks of being an editor I guess!!! I was also treated to an impromptu magic show from the owner of the venue prior to the first act.

“Give a Little Love”, before they slowed it down a bit by playing a track that only sold in America but the band likes the track s o decided to play it. Next they played “ The Bump” which was a hit for “Kenny ”, but was originally a ‘B’ side for the “Rollers”. I became a little concerned for many of the crowd at this point, as they all started to do the dance. They are not as flexible as they used to be and I thought there would be a need for a few hip replacements before the night was out. Then a track originally written by ‘ Woody ’, “Love Me Like I love You” was played. That was followed by the “Monkees” track “Daydream Believer ”. The vocals from the crowd were as loud as the vocals over the PA system.
