ABOUT THE COLLECTOR

The word “Golden” conjures up many meanings. It can be a color, an anniversary, an era, or the indication of success. These meanings all come into play when describing Bill Greening’s collection which has spanned most of his life. Bill Greening discovered the Barbie doll at a very young age. As a California native, Bill grew up in the 1970s, a time of Malibu suntans, Newport sun sailing, beaches and golden sunshine. These were all constant in California, but also a constant inspiration in the world of the Barbie Doll. He went from playing with the doll, to being a serious collector in his teens. No one could have predicted his childhood love would lead to a career as Principal Designer for the Barbie doll, but it was a dream come true. At the beginning of his career, at a doll show, he met the then-retired founders of Mattel, Ruth and Elliott Handler who autographed his first design produced for Mattel. It was a beautiful start to an ongoing illustrious 25 years with Mattel.

As a collector for over 35 years, Bill has curated some of the most interesting and perfect examples of fashion doll history. His passion as a historian helped document his collection when he discovered that the designer of many of his childhood favorites, like Golden Dream Barbie Doll, were created by his work mentor at Mattel, Kitty Black Perkins. Connecting a history to his dolls became important as he sought out dolls from 1959, understanding these early dolls were connected to Barbie doll’s first designer, Charlotte Johnson. Another passion is unusual and rare licensed products. The collection is highlighted with his love and quest for international examples of his favorite dolls including those from Europe and Japan. Bill’s

passion was the Barbie doll, but it led him to discover other fashion dolls. These brands and makers, including Tammy, Tressy and countless clones, were available both in the US and foreign markets and added variety and distraction to his otherwise very focused doll collection.

Bill continues to be passionate about the Barbie doll and remains very active in the doll community. Collector can rightfully consider this a rare opportunity to add some of his treasures to their own collection.
