Introduction
The nearly forgotten and charming word “Nonesuch”, meaning unparalleled, a paragon, a thing without equal, seems a perfect one-word description of the rare and historically important antique dolls which are presented at Theriault’s late Autumn Marquis auction of antique dolls and playthings. The auction features the private collection of Laurie Baker of Colorado, offering the French poupées, fashion accessories, and maitrise furniture which she explored in her many well-researched articles written for Antique Doll Collector, a truly exemplary collection. Too, there are nonesuch dolls from the private collection of noted connoisseur Sandra Ottiger ranging from an extraordinary English wooden with original costume to fine early paper maches, some from notable previous collections to porcelain dolls by KPM and further very fine French poupées. A delightful contrast is also offered by the collection of John Oxley of Michigan whose fascination with googly dolls led him to assemble a grand assortment of these wide-eyed wonders, and in the private dollhouse collection with remarkable miniature furnishings highlighted by an important dollhouse, originally featured in the Washington Doll House Museum of Flora Gill Jacobs.
And one more thing about the nostalgic word “nonesuch”. In the late 1800s, an American company bestowed this name on their famous mincemeat, a traditional filling for Thanksgiving pies. Mincemeat was made with a judicious mixture of raisins, dried apples, currents, other dried fruits, sugar and spices. Rather like a delightful doll auction. Nonesuch, indeed! x

The comic strip was created in 1897 by German immigrant Rudolph Dirks for the Hearst newspaper syndicate. In 1912 Dirks and Hearst became involved in a legal wrangle, resulting
84.

in Dirks leaving Hearst and creating a rival comic strip “Hans and Fritz” (basically the same characters), while Hearst continued “The Katzenjammer Kids” although drawn by another artist. The actual doll models were registered by Kammer and Reinhardt in the German courts in 1913, and it seems logical that their production may have been inspired by this legal battle, as a means of Hearst continuing to
promote the Max and Moritz names, although this fact is not currently documented. The Story of Carrie Hall

One of the many skilled and talented women of the American pioneer was Carrie (Hackett) Hall, born in Wisconsin in 1866, who learned seamstress skills early on from her mother, and a love of books and history from her father. It was two decades later, having moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, founded in 1854, but thriving as the jumping-off spot for westward bound pioneers, that Carrie put her seamstress skills and sense of fashion to work. She soon built a respected reputation as the area’s finest dress-maker, some saying her work rivaled that of couturieres in New York and Paris. Business thrived, until the early 1900s when readily available ready-made clothing dampened the market for custom work. Carrie then turned her skills to quilt making, authoring the classic book, Romance of the Patchwork Quilt, and earning her the sobriquet of leading authority of quilting in America.
Yet, finally, it was costume design to which she returned. In the late 1930s. In 1938 her second book, From Hoopskirts to Nudity, she wrote about the fashions that flourished between 1866 to 1936. Her writing style was brilliant, informative yet saucy, opinionated yet with reason. It can be said that she set new guidelines for American women’s distinctive fashion style.
To provide visual detail to her book, she determined to recreate in miniature form, a series of the actual costumes she had made for her women clients during the late 1800s. Each of the miniature costumes was designed to fit a 26”-27” lady-bodied doll. It is not known exactly how many costumes she created or how many still survive. For that the search continues. One small surviving group is presented here from the private collection of Laurie Baker.
