01 — MANUCURIST GREEN FLASH ROSE MOUNTBATTEN

15 ML, $26

“I call this ‘the new greige.’ It’s a greyed-out rose colour that is super complementary to my skin tone.”

02 — WONDERBLUSH LA LUMIERE LIQUID EYESHADOW IN RAYON

5.5 ML, $32

“There’s this outdated idea that you shouldn’t use shimmer if you’re over a certain age. This one doesn’t settle into lines and adds a nice pop. One little dab on the eyelid and you just blend it out for a soft sparkle that looks great on any age.”

Pro tip: Get the perfect, complete eye look using just three shades of La Lumiere. First, apply a mid-range colour all over your eyelids before adding a darker hue to the crease and a lighter shade just below your brow line. Or, dip an eyeliner brush into the liquid eyeshadow and apply a thin line along your top lash line in place of eyeliner for an easy-to-wear finish.

03 — MARGARET DABBS FOOT HYGIENE CREAM

100 ML, $44

“Amazing for cracked heels. I apply it in the mornings before I put on my socks.”

MARIAM’S PICKS

Mariam shares her current faves for a spring beauty refresh. Uplift your routine with these delightful essentials, from the nail polish colour of the season to the everyday products she can’t be without.

04 — WONDERBLUSH LE FARD BLUSH IN PIVOINE

4.8 G, $36

“This is a great blush. It’s a complementary matte colour that’s not too much, not too little.”

Pro tip: For a sunkissed look, apply blush to your cheeks then sweep what’s leftover on the brush over the tip of your nose.

05 — BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE SERUM COMPLEXE ROYAL

30 ML, $222

“Forget whatever was used backstage at the Margiela show. This is the ultimate glowy finish for the skin.”

06 — CODEX LABS BIA GENTLE CLEANSING OIL

30 ML, $33

“I like this because you can use it on your eyes to remove makeup and it doesn’t feel like you’re looking through a veil of Vaseline afterwards.”

07 — OLVERUM THE DRY BODY OIL 10 ML, $18

“I take the travel size with me everywhere. It absorbs instantly, it works in multiple climates and it has this uplifting herbaceous smell I’m obsessed with.”

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Barbara Paldus, the Canadian founder and CEO of California-based Codex Labs, is revolutionizing how we care for our skin. Here, she shares how her background in engineering and her career in Silicon Valley startups led her to launch a biotech company that produces science-backed skincare.

I was born in KitchenerWaterloo. We spent a few years in Holland, France and Germany while I was growing up. When I came back from Germany, I decided I wanted to become a scientist. And my guidance counsellor at the time thought that since I had a lot of extra class credits, I could take some firstyear math classes at the University of Waterloo.

I accidentally ended up at the engineering admissions office where they said that if I completed Grade 13 English and algebra in summer school, I could get my high school degree after Grade 11 and start university that fall, which I thought was cool. That's how I ended up in electrical engineering at 17, and I loved it.

From there, I did my master’s and Ph.D. at Stanford University. My first business was a spin-off from my PhD research: Making analytical equipment where we could examine trace elements in human breath (to detect everything from cancer or diabetes to gastric ulcers), carbon cycle and climate-change gases. We were also looking

at different problems, mostly in industrial and environmental applications.

I did that from 1998 to 2005 when I left because I wanted to run a company. It was a different time in Silicon Valley and there were very few female CEOs. Because I had a non-compete, I started a company in biotech, called Finesse Solutions. We ended up making automation systems for bio-processing and became a very large global supplier of this automation for biological therapeutics.

Most of the Covid-19 vaccines are made with my equipment.

When my son was diagnosed with ADHD, I decided I wanted to spend more time with him. I sold the company and had a five-year non-compete.

That’s when I started thinking about how he had a lot of allergies to some of the compounds that were in baby skin-care products, and wouldn’t it be fun to look at skincare not from a beauty perspective, but from a health perspective — what biologically keeps you healthy. Healthy skin always looks beautiful, right?

The first thing we wanted to attack was eliminating the use of petrochemicalderived ingredients, and that led us to fermented ingredients such as PreservX for preservation, which was our first patent. And that became a cornerstone of everything we do. That's how all our products ended up being microbiome-friendly, too. With every product, we show the clinical data, not just consumer feedback. We test everything and we have partnered with a large clinical-testing facility in France. They use analytical instruments that measure what your product does. And we've put all those numbers in our efficacy panel, which is similar to the nutrition panels on our food. We say, “This will be the average change in your trans-epidermal water loss, your hydration or the amount of oil you have on the surface of your skin.” It’s all measured. We also take consumer feedback to make sure that the product feels good and doesn’t smell bad. As none of us have water sensors in our skin we can’t measure our own hydration, so our opinions

of how well a product works are not really quantitative. For example, in a study where we had an oil-control cream, it physically dried out the skin by removing the extra oil, but the user feedback from the study was that people felt “more hydrated.” It goes back to

have to stress about good crop yield or bad crop yield because the weather changes that year. Bringing biotech into skincare both from a sustainability and performance perspective has been really important over the last four years.

“And wouldn’t it be fun to look at skin

being an engineer. I want to quantify everything.

We also try to be sustainable in everything we do. That's another reason why we manufacture with biotech — because you can control the quality of the ingredient but, more importantly, because of the reduced water usage, electricity usage and transportation. You grow the cells, you extract the cells, you don't have to pick plants, you don't have to use agricultural land, you don't have to worry about heavy metals in the soil and you don’t

I don't like to think of us as a beauty company because we're more about healthy skin. We get feedback like, “I don't have to wear makeup anymore. I do when I want to, but I don't have to.” That, to me, is another happy

skin always looks beautiful, right?” Agent Nateur Holi (Sun) (30 ML), $73 “This took me seven years to perfect. It is a makeup-skin care hybrid, formulated with ingredients you would find in your skin care products, with the protection of non-nano zinc oxide, and the added benefit of a flexible, dewy tint.” “One of my favourite beauty hacks is applying Holi (Bright), our resurfacing mask, overnight. It gently exfoliates, nourishes and firms your skin — you seriously wake up with glass skin! Sometimes I will mix it with Biologique Recherche Masque Visolastine or Creme Biofixine, depending on what my skin needs.” “Our best-selling supplement, it truly is beauty from the inside out. It combines two daily powerhouse superfoods, marine collagen and pearl powder, and is abundant in over 30 trace minerals, including silica, magnesium, calcium and potassium that support the appearance of optimal hair, skin and nail health. Thousands of our customers swear by it. I love to mix it into my signature matcha latte recipe with almond milk, maple syrup, cinnamon and a pinch of Himalayan sea salt.” We caught up with Jena to discover a few of her personal wellness and beauty essentials, from her daily rituals to her favourite author, plus her must-have skin care products. He trained Madonna for five or six years and has helped me eradicate much of my chronic pain from endometriosis through resistance and strength training. I also always take the stairs and walk about 40 flights daily. This is the best thing you can do for toned legs and reducing cellulite!” Deepak Chopra “If you’ve never read Deepak Chopra, author and alternative medicine advocate, I’d recommend dipping into his meditations and affirmations to inspire new ways of looking at what you want from your life.” Bath Time “A daily bath is a treasured ritual for me. LIP SERVICE

KISSING UP TO OUR FAVOURITE LIPSTICK MOMENTS.

Lipstick is one of the most mythologized beauty products and with good reason. These magic bullets are inherently powerful in transforming not just how we look but how we feel. And its history is as fascinating and varied as the number of shades available.

Here are some of the most impactful lipstick moments throughout time.

ANCIENT ORIGINS

The idea of enhancing our lips goes way, way back to 3500 B.C. when the first known lipstick was worn by Queen Shub-Ad of ancient Ur. In Egypt, all genders would have used makeup as part of a daily routine.

WITCHY WOMEN

During the Middle Ages, there was a shift away from makeup toward a plainer look, with the belief that women who wore lipstick had entered into a pact with the devil. In the 1700s, the English parliament passed legislation that outlawed women from altering their appearance as grounds for being tried for witchcraft or an annulment of their marriage. Yikes!

DIY

DRAMA

The stigma of wearing lipstick meant that English women would find covert ways to enhance the colour of their lips, sharing techniques like rubbing red ribbons onto their mouths.

THESE LIPS DON'T LIE.

"Lipstick is the most valuable weapon in a woman's makeup kit. It has the power to transform the appearance and mood of the person wearing it, and, at the same time, arouses the admiration of everybody else."

—Monica Bellucci

FRENCH DISPATCH

When Queen Victoria declared that makeup was “impolite,” lipstick went underground. Women of means who could travel to Paris might buy a pot of Guerlain’s lip pomade.

THE SAFETY DANCE

In 1938, the U.S. passed its Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act and safety standards for lipstick were introduced, meaning there were no longer dubious, or even deadly, ingredients.

"If I walk outside without lipstick, I feel naked."

—Sofia Vergara

"I can't see myself without pink lipstick. I can go without it for a couple days, but if there was no more pink lipstick in the world, I'd be useless. Seriously."

—Nicki Minaj

"If I'm feeling down in the dumps, or like I need a pop of colour, I'll put on M.A.C's Lipstick in Lady Danger. I discovered red lipstick when I did the Oscar season: Chanel sent me one and I realized how classic and glamorous it can be."

—Chloe Sevigny

"If you don’t wear lipstick, I can’t talk to you."

—Isabella Blow

WORLD WAR

When women were called up to work in industry during World War II, wearing lipstick was a way to maintain a familiar feeling of femininity while performing traditionally masculine duties.

EQUAL RIGHTS

Lipstick went on the move when the first tube of lipstick was introduced in 1915. When the New York suffragettes took to fight for the vote, a set of red lips was their beauty calling card.

THE LIPSTICK INDEX

Coined by Estée Lauder former CEO Leonard A. Lauder during the early 2000s recession, “The Lipstick Index” describes the consumer phenomenon of cosmetics sales remaining strong during tough economic times as people reach for small treats instead of splurging on big-ticket items. Your favourite beauty product is recession-proof!

REBELLIOUS RED

Because of its historical association with sex workers and a more mature aesthetic, red lipstick in particular has been notoriously polarizing. Consider Hugh Heffner, who disliked red lipstick so much he forbade Holly Madison and other models from wearing it.

CELLULOID KISS

Lipstick has played a role in defining some of the most influential film characters, from Pam Grier in Foxy Brown to Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction and even Ursula in The Little Mermaid.

STYLISH MUST HAVE

In her 2008 book, The One Hundred, fashion editor Nina Garcia pronounces red lipstick one of the pieces every stylish woman must own. “Red lipstick is much like the little black dress or your favourite pair of jeans. One size does not fit all.”

CONFIDENCE

WOMAN

In 2011, a survey by L’Oréal found that 75 percent of women believe that lipstick makes them more confident. We’ll drink to that — with a lipstick-proof straw, of course.

MASKS OFF

During the Covid-19 stayat-home orders, many of us took delight in wearing lipstick at home as an uplifting ritual or simply a reminder of normalcy.

Meet LoveSeen, an extensive collection of false lashes anyone can wear any day of the week, now available in Canada.

When it comes to eyelashes, the bigger the better. Or so conventional wisdom would have you believe. But what about those times when you don’t necessarily want the vava-voom, but just a little extra oomph? Enter LoveSeen, a collection of false lashes with a style for every occasion and one of the latest additions to the Living Beauty family.

LoveSeen has a very stylish pedigree. It’s the brainchild of Jenna Lyons, the fashion icon who changed the way we dress during her tenure as executive creative director and president at J.Crew before joining the cast of The Real Housewives of New York in 2023. Lyons lives with a genetic disorder called incontinentia pigmenti, which has impacted her skin, hair, teeth and eyelashes. Unable to find fake lashes that gave an authentic look she wanted to present day-to-day, Lyons decided to take matters into her own very capable hands.

To rethink how synthetic lashes were traditionally offered, Lyons teamed up with Troi Ollivierre, a celebrity makeup artist who had extensive experience with falsies from his work on set for publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair Together, they gathered a group of people with different backgrounds, ages, eye shapes and beauty aspirations to develop fun, realistic lashes for all.

So what makes LoveSeen lashes different? First, they’re made of nylon or synthetic PET, meaning that the brand is cruelty-free. The brand is also 98 percent plastic-free, with a goal to get that up to 100, and its packaging is recyclable. Then there’s the aesthetic of the lashes themselves. Rather than going for a level of impact suitable for 4K television or a stage performance, LoveSeen is playing in an IRL space, offering lashes that lend a flattering pop without overpowering. They’re easily worn in everyday situations like brunch out with friends or meetings. They also boast technical features like soft colours, varying lengths and transparent bands to make them further customizable to your desired look. It’s all about that your-lashes-butbetter vibe. But with a founder like Lyons who is known for her red-carpet appearances, of course, there are also several styles that pack a punch.

There’s a lash for everybody, but here are some of our favourite LoveSeen offerings.

1. LoveSeen Cate, $24.50 For an eye-opening curl, believable volume and subtle length, look no further than Cate, one of LoveSeen’s lightest styles available in black and light brown.

2. LoveSeen Luca, $24.50 Available in brown/black and light brown, the fairly minimal Luca has lashes of staggered length for a look that mimics the way natural lashes grow.

3. LoveSeen Levi, $24.50 This demi-lash brings an elongating, cat-eye shape to the outer corner of the eye. Available in black, The Levi is ideal for those with full lashes who want to add some length.

4. LoveSeen Jack, $24.50 For the perfect cat-eye shape, Jack adds fluttery length and oomph at the outside of the eye with tapered fibres that give a natural look.

LoveSeen Little Brass Box, $40 Keep your lashes safe in the Little Brass Box to get the most out of them — with proper care, they can last up to 10 wears. Its unlacquered brass finish has a

Skin Science MANI MASTERCLASS

Nails should never be left in the hands of an amateur, and cared for properly a beautiful set can be enjoyed any time of year. To give you the skills to be an at-home expert, industry pro, awardwinning nail technician and educator Jessica Ellison shares the 411 on nail care, answering some burning questions like why waterless pedicures win and cuticle cutting is a dealbreaker.

WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING WE SHOULD

ALL BE

DOING TO CARE FOR OUR NAILS?

“A nail conditioner in an oil format will make your nails more resilient by keeping the keratin cells flexible and tough. It also offers the immediate look of healthy hydration and supple skin. Look for conditioners that contain jojoba oil, which has a molecular size that is so macro it is touted as the most effective carrier oil. The ideal ingredients for conditioning the nail plates, along with the surrounding protective skin folds, are fruit-extracted oils like mango seed and coconut, along with nut oils such as walnut and sweet almond oil.”

WHAT

DO YOU WISH EVERYONE KNEW ABOUT NAIL CARE?

“That nail care should be simple and painless. The nail plate is composed of non-living hard keratin. Condition that keratin daily and have professional care in the form of a manicure and pedicure every three weeks at minimum. Golden rule: Don’t let anyone give your eponychium, or cuticles, a haircut! The eponychium acts like the seal around your refrigerator door, keeping pathogens out. When you cut this seal off, it can be extremely painful and you’re giving harmful bacteria a direct portal to your bloodstream.”

HOW SHOULD WE CARE FOR OUR NAILS AT HOME?

“Like your facial skincare routine, serums should ideally be applied before creams to allow them to be pushed deeper into the skin and to prevent transepidermal water loss. With nail care, using a cream alone just won’t cut it. The thinnest to thickest rule works wonders! Cuticle oil first, followed by hand cream.” WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON NAIL-CARE FAUX PAS?

“The worst faux pas is thinking your nails need to breathe. There isn’t a tiny set of lungs in your nails! Quite often, we think our nails need this breather to recover from damage inflicted by unscrupulous or miseducated nail

professionals. Products don’t damage nails, but people do! Nails damaged from abusive filing, electric nail drills or improper removal of gel enamel or enhancement products need a protective them while the damaged cells grow out toward the free edge. Always seek out an ethical professional who offers integritybased treatments.”

WHY SHOULD YOU OPT FOR A WATERLESS PEDICURE?

“Waterless treatments allow a nail professional to see the condition of the skin on hands or feet without water clarifying the skin tissue. Water is a universal solvent and soaking in it may cause further dehydration to the skin. Furthermore, nail plates are like tiny hard sponges that soak up water and expand. It can take over five hours for that water to evaporate, meaning that the nail enamel applied during the expansion stage is now large for the nail plate that has contracted. This causes premature chipping and delamination of enamel applied to the nail. Waterless is the way to go.”

WHY DON’T BARE NAILS ALWAYS LOOK AS GOOD AS WE IMAGINE?

“Bare nails can be truly gorgeous. However, naked nail plates do act up from time to time. When we keep the nails naked, we are prone to staining, breakage and misshapen nails. To enjoy the look of bare nails that are protected, opt for a clear enamel manicure that consists of a base coat along with two coats of your favourite long-wear matte or shiny topcoat to give the illusion of a beautiful, bare, minimalistic mani.”

HOW DO THE GENETICS OF OUR NAILS PLAY INTO THEIR OVERALL APPEARANCE?

“If you find yourself at the shallow end of the nail gene pool, it’s due to the shape of your phalanges, the bones in the finger. These shape your nail beds and genetics play a big role in their size. If either of your parents has long, slender, piano-playing fingers and perfectly curved nail beds, you likely will too — you got them from your mama (or papa).”

Jessica’s Product Recommendations

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE EMULSION RENOVATRICE MAINS (75 ML), $82

NO STUPID QUESTIONS

When

Q: The NOTION that acne ends when you’re through
teen years is a STRAIGHT-UP MYTH. I’m well into my 30s and still dealing with blemishes and it’s
—YOUR

A: Hello Acneic Elder,

You are not alone. Adult acne is more common than we think: 50 percent of women aged 20 to 29 get acne and even 25 percent of women aged 40 to 49 still suffer from acne. Hormonal acne, with breakouts on the chin, along the jawline or even on the neck, can feel like a monthly hell-loop.

Let me digress for a moment on pimple patches. Most pimple patches have a high concentration of benzoyl peroxide (2.5 percent to 5 percent) so they oxidize your skin barrier (break it down) and dry out your skin, a no-no if you have sensitive skin. They also can’t treat surrounding pores clogged with dirt, blackheads or whiteheads that can then get inflamed from the glue and turn into future pimples. And forget it for cystic acne. On top of that, the patch kills the local skin microbiome, so when you remove it, bad bacteria can recolonize that area.

You first must remove makeup before you go to bed with a non-comedogenic, pH-balanced micellar water, one that preferably also removes excess oiliness without leading to inflammation, which puts your skin back into overproducing the sebum you just removed. Next, you want to use a microbiome-supporting, pH-balanced cleanser with salicylic acid to deeply cleanse your pores, wash away dirt, and loosen up comedones and not dehydrate your skin. You then need to follow that with a soothing, very gently exfoliating and hydrating toner that will also help shrink your pores. Smaller, cleaner pores won’t form pimples. And finally, you need a non-comedogenic moisturizer that will keep your pores as closed as possible yet protect and fortify your skin barrier, because a damaged barrier leaks, leading to inflammation, which goes back to the acne.

If you have too much stress or hormonal imbalance, then you should have your hormones measured. High cortisol means a supplement with l-theanine. An imbalance in testosterone, progesterone or estrogen means myo-inositol is needed to help balance them out. And anti-oxidants are always a solid bet, as you want to minimize general inflammation.

Sleep more, drink lots of water and stress less!

Warm wishes,

The Danish capital is renowned for its inventive design scene, world-class dining and stylish citizens — Copenhagen Fashion Week is quickly becoming an essential stop on the runway calendar. We love soaking in the city’s Scandi-cool atmosphere while munching on a smørrebrød or two. The largest city in North America is a hub of creativity, with the Zona Maco art fair putting Mexico City on the map as an international contemporary art destination There’s no shortage of cool neighbourhoods to explore, tasty restaurants to try and stunning design and architecture to take in. This Asian capital is a city of contrasts, balancing chaotic energy with a well-honed expertise in relaxation. It also has a burgeoning contemporary art scene, with endless contemporary galleries to explore.
