FOUNDER'S LETTER

“Our mission is simple: to help you navigate beauty with confidence.” A Message from Mariam

W

e’ve devoted this issue to meangirl-free beauty, an approach where inclusivity is a given, judgment doesn’t exist, and you feel like the best version of yourself. Living Beauty is a place where what makes you you is the top priority, the advice you receive is genuinely right for you, and there’s no pressure to buy into products or services you don’t need. We’re also taking stock of how meangirl attitudes can impact expertise. In an age when we’re inundated with voices — some knowledgeable, some performative — it can be hard to know who to trust. Our mission is simple: to help you navigate beauty with confidence. “Expert Advice” on page 4 puts the advice of three bona fide experts into your hands. In “The Beauty of Objects” on page 6, writer Renée Tse explores the physical beauty of what we choose to surround ourselves with. She suggests our tools and products should be just as beautiful as everything else around us, whether it’s the rooms we inhabit or the clothing we wear. That includes the gifts we give, so turn to page 5 for Pinterest-approved tips on how to choose a present anyone will want. This issue is also about remembering that nice girls, like our favourite sidekicks from pop-culture history seen here on the right, don’t always finish last. Like the beautiful and inspiring members of our community Daniel Neuhaus photographed for our Benettoninspired cover, they live with grace, edge and individuality, and serve as a beautiful reminder that there’s space for everyone to grow and evolve without judgment, pressure or pretense.

NICE OUR FAVOURITE

GIRLS We’ve always been inspired by the sidekicks of life, the people you can count on to be trustworthy, consistent and loyal. We believe the best kind of radiance comes from heart, humour and authenticity, which are also the key attributes of these underrated supporting players from our favourite films. At Living Beauty, you are the main character, so let us be your dependable sidekick. Penny Pingleton Hairspray The goofy, big-hearted best friend to Tracy Turnblad, Penny displays an unexpected boldness that steals the show, including breaking some major 1960s taboos.

Jesse Jackson She’s All That Funny, kind and protective, Laney’s loyal BFF remains by her side throughout her iconic transformation — glasses off, red dress on.

Dory Finding Nemo This blue beauty is loyal, uplifting, forgiving and deeply encouraging — making her an indispensable friend on the underwater journey.

Mariam White Founder and CEO, Living Beauty Inc.

Paulette Bonafonté Legally Blonde In addition to gifting us with her mastery of the iconic bend-and-snap technique, Elle Woods’s sweet, supportive nail tech-turned-confidante shows us that anything’s possible when women work together.

Dionne Davenport Clueless With her unforgettable hat collection, Cher’s equally stylish BFF is loyal but grounded, balancing her pal’s outlandish schemes with wit and confidence.

MANUCURIST KERATIN BOOSTER (15 ML), $20 A miracle treatment for soft, damaged tips, this genius revitalizing serum is like Olaplex for your nails.

FLAMINGO ESTATE ROMA HEIRLOOM TOMATO ROOM SPRAY (118 ML), $80 I’m loving everything from Flamingo Estate, especially this aromatic standout.

AIR APPARENT Meet the VIPs: The Full Oxygenating Lineup With the redevelopment of its oxygen-focused VIP O2 line, Biologique Recherche demonstrates its expertise in the quiet art of evolving BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE LAIT VIP O2

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE MASQUE VIP O2

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE CREME VIP O2

(250 ML), $99

(100 ML), $220

(50 ML), $215

Start fresh by effectively removing everything that leads to environmental skin damage in the first place, including impurities, waterproof makeup and the pollution particles that hinder oxygenation.

Delivering a high concentration of active ingredients through its thick, creamy texture, consider this mask a skin SOS treatment. After 15 minutes, it visibly improves skin quality and restores its elasticity, leaving a radiant, luminous look.

This daily essential continuously supports the skin, providing hydration and comfort without a greasy finish for refined, nourished, soothed and toned skin texture — because the cellular respiration process doesn’t sleep.

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE CONTOUR YEUX VIP O2

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE FLUIDE VIP O2

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE EMULSION CORPS VIP O2

(15 ML), $125

(30 ML), $316

(100 ML), $88

The fragile eye contour requires its own unique care, and this light cream initiates oxygenation in the area with a selection of targeted active ingredients that reduce the intensity of dark circles for soft, supple skin.

Lock it in with this aqueous gel that reinforces the oxygenating activity of Creme VIP O2, forming a protective film and a unique finish that instantly enhances radiance for moisturized, luminous and even skin.

For skin below the bustline, this fluid emulsion boosts cellular oxygenation and reduces oxidative stress by blocking particle pollution and increasing cellular energy to improve hydration, softness and radiance all over.

Knowledge isn’t static — it shifts, grows and renews itself, much like the skin. That philosophy of constant evolution is at the heart of Biologique Recherche, a brand long recognized as a pioneer in global skin care. The latest innovation? A reimagining of its iconic VIP O2 range, now reformulated to work on a cellular level. First introduced in 1998, VIP O2 was born when Biologique Recherche founder Yvan Allouche, inspired by the concept of liquid respiration, pioneered formulas designed to help skin breathe freely. VIP O2 was an especially vital innovation for those navigating the challenges of urban living, where pollution and oxidative stress can disrupt the skin’s natural oxygen flow. While the former VIP O2 technology worked by boosting oxygen at the skin’s surface, this new version penetrates deeper, reaching the mitochondria of skin cells. It uses a melatonin-powered complex, reinforced with two co-bioactives, to energize the cells. Once inside, it’s converted into ATP — the fuel that drives all cellular functions — enhancing the skin’s natural ability to renew, repair and glow. “This mechanism goes far beyond simple oxygenation — it reactivates the skin’s energy function by harnessing an already-existing physiological process,” explains Dr. Hélène Huguet, Vice President of Global Research and Development at Biologique Recherche. The reimagined VIP O2 range is the perfect example of why, by continuing to evolve its formulas with scientific precision and forward-thinking innovation, Biologique Recherche remains the choice of top skin-care professionals worldwide. Fifty years on, the French brand hasn’t lost sight of its mission to deliver treatments that are both visionary and effective. Like the skin’s constant renewal, Biologique Recherche’s innovation is what keeps it fresh, as well as at the forefront of global beauty.

The Credentials: Editorial lead at Pinterest The Subject Matter: Choosing gifts people actually want What questions should you ask yourself before buying someone a gift? “It’s great to consider their hobbies, as well as their likes and dislikes. If someone is a beauty lover, consider getting them a gift set or a limited edition item from their favourite brand. Something else to consider is their current circumstances — are they celebrating a milestone or going through a tough time in their life? If your best friend has been really stressed out lately, maybe your gift brings some TLC into their life. A new pet parent? There are so many cute gift ideas for furry friends.” How can someone’s Pinterest board provide clues as to the gifts they really want to receive? “People use Pinterest boards to curate their wish lists, so peeking at what they’re pinning takes the guesswork out of gift giving. If you’re shopping for the cool young person on your list, for example, Pinterest can be the perfect pulse check on what’s trending.”

What are some up-and-coming beauty-related gifts that are trending on Pinterest right now? “Pinterest’s Fall Trend Report spotlights a few big beauty themes. Grunge glam makeup (think moody palettes and edgy lipstick shades), cozy fall scents and sea-science skin care (innovative ingredients like salmon DNA) are all sure to be favourites.”

How do you elevate a gift with an element of surprise when you’re giving something someone has asked for? “Personalization, like getting something monogrammed, engraved or embroidered, is such a special way to add a thoughtful touch.”

Sam McKnight

@hairbysammcknight

The Credentials: Hairstylist to the stars and brand founder The Subject Matter: Hair health What are some underrated ways to care for our hair’s health? “Being gentle. Simple, easy steps such as heat protection and treating your hair gently, especially when wet, as it’s at its most fragile, make a huge difference over time. Another often overlooked step is regular hydration — both with lightweight, leave-in conditioners and masks suited to your hair type.” What role does brushing play in hair health? “It helps distribute the natural oils from your scalp through the lengths of your hair, which can add shine and softness. Choosing the right brush will detangle without causing stress or hair breakage and can make styling easier and faster.”

Don’t underestimate the experience and knowledge of your hairdresser and don’t be afraid to experiment a little — your perfect product combination is often found through experience.” With so many dry shampoos on the market, what makes yours different? “It refreshes the hair without leaving a powdery residue or dulling the colour, giving hair a bit of volume and texture as well. Plus, the scent — fresh, modern, not overpowering — makes it feel like a proper luxury product.”

How important is scalp care to the overall health of our hair? “I always say: beautiful hair starts at the scalp. Your scalp and its microbiome are essential — they need to be healthy to produce strong, vibrant hair. Scalp treatments can be just what you need to soothe, balance and clarify, making a huge difference.”

HAIR BY SAM MCKNIGHT LAZY GIRL DRY SHAMPOO (250 ML), $42.50

What’s the best way to find the right styling products for our unique hair type? “Determine what your hair goals are and what your hair needs to get there.

@theecowell

Jen Novakovich The Credentials: Cosmetic scientist, panel discussion host and founder of The Eco Well The Subject Matter: Beauty experts

How do you spot a dodgy beauty expert? “I’ll refer to an acronym that [doctor, beauty science writer] Michelle Wong and I put together: MUDCAPS. M is for misleading credentials, U is for undisclosed everything, D is for defensive, C is for credit — do they credit their sources? A is for authority, P is for peers — who do they associate with? And S is for a spotty track record.” When everyone’s an “expert,” how do you know which ones you can trust? “Be critical of every information source because, even if they’ve been credible in the past, that may change. Use the MUDCAPS framework to monitor behaviour and pay attention to what’s being said.” What's your take on sorting through the noise of online beauty advice? “Being aware of some of the basics can help you spot misinformation. If somebody is saying something that conflicts with these basic facts, then you can spot it and ask what else they’re saying that doesn’t make sense. Of course, to find these basic facts, you have to first find a good information source.”

Is there a way to banish misinformation from our social media feeds? “You’re training your algorithm by what you pay attention to and engage with. Try to speed past things that are questionable at first glance. And pause before you share, comment or like. The more you engage with content, the more visibility it'll have to you and to other people.” What is the most prevalent beauty-related myth that you’re currently seeing online? “I’ve been really interested in environmental-related misinformation, like the idea that plastic-free equals better or solid equals more environmentally friendly. I’m very interested in how these subtle inaccuracies — that are often spread by good intentions from the general public — lead to poor environmental outcomes.”

The Beauty of Objects

Renée Tse on why design matters in beauty and beyond

Your Guide to La Bonne Brosse

In a time when joy often comes from life’s smaller moments, surrounding ourselves with beauty has never felt more essential. Aesthetically-pleasing design — whether in our homes, our wardrobes or the products we reach for every day — has become a quiet form of happiness, and the reason the packaging and presentation of beauty products is just as impactful as formulas and ingredients. For me, beauty objects are not just functional — they’re part of the landscape of my life. I treat fragrance bottles like sculptures, dotting them around my home and displaying them next to my coffee table books like art. I invest in beautiful soap bottles for my bathroom and even keep a chic hand sanitizer in my car. These everyday objects punctuate otherwise ordinary routines, transforming simple acts — washing hands, spritzing perfume — into something that feels elevated. What’s more, well-made, considered objects are anything but disposable, becoming lifelong companions or even family heirlooms that speak to the sustainable qualities of expert craftsmanship. Design isn’t just decoration — it’s a way of uplifting the day-to-day moments that make up a life. Of course, what’s inside the package matters most. But in today’s busy landscape, standout design is what captures attention first. It makes us pause, pick something up, purchase it and possibly even share it on social media. While the prevailing design trend of late has focused on a pared-down, streamlined look, keeping in step with what we typically think of as modern, we’re heading in a direction where products have

a more covetable, indispensable quality. Take the hairbrush: Most of us own a utilitarian version tucked away in a drawer. It does the job, but does it spark joy? Likely not. Enter La Bonne Brosse, the French brush with its candy-coloured palette and whimsically sculpted handle. It’s as much of an objet d'art as it is a tool for healthy hair — something you actually want on display. “We like the idea of putting beauty in something you touch every day,” says co-founder Flore des Robert. “We wanted something that would be very soft to touch and in a colour that would never be out of fashion — a colour that, twenty years down the road, you’ll still be super happy to have in your purse.” That intentionality is what makes design resonate: It’s not clutter, it’s care. This pursuit of beauty extends far beyond the products themselves. Leading French retailers like La Samaritaine, Le Bon Marché and Printemps have shown the power of brick-and-mortar boutiques that are as thoughtfully designed as the items on their shelves. These spaces function as more than stores — they’re aspirational environments that invite you to imagine your own bathroom, vanity or living room elevated with the same sense of aesthetic harmony. It’s a legacy that stretches back to Helena Rubinstein’s beauty salons of the early 1900s, where interiors were curated with her collections of art and antiquities, offering women not only beauty treatments but also an education on

elevating their standards of taste, design and refinement. Today, Living Beauty’s Toronto flagship continues this outlook in a thoroughly modern way. A reimagining of the traditional apothecary, the space features layers of clay-toned millwork, softened architectural curves and fluted windows that flood the interior with natural light. Mixed in are some quintessentially personal touches, including the fireengine red, lip-shaped coffee table shown above once belonging to André Leon Talley, which Living Beauty Founder and CEO Mariam White picked up at auction. The combination flagship and spa is both luxurious and approachable, a place where design inspires curiosity and care while also offering respite from the noise of everyday life. It’s not just a place to shop — it’s an immersive experience that embodies the same philosophy as a beautifully designed bottle or brush: that beauty should touch the senses, spark joy and feel enduring. Whether it’s a sculptural hairbrush, a glass soap bottle or a flagship that feels like a sanctuary, surrounding ourselves with beauty has an undeniable impact. These objects and spaces ground us, soothe us and remind us that even in moments when life feels overwhelming, we can reclaim a sense of control and delight. It’s the smallest joys — those daily touchpoints of design — that add up to something deeply meaningful.

LIVING BEAUTY

With so many clinics and spas available, why should I choose Living Beauty? “We believe in creating a healthy and confident relationship with beauty that feels personal and authentic — you are never just another appointment. Every treatment and product we choose is selected for its effectiveness and ability to support natural results rather than trends. Aesthetics should never be about changing who you are.” How do I know which treatments are suitable for me? “The best place to start is with a consultation. Together, we look at things like skin quality, tone, texture, volume changes and muscle activity before discussing your goals. Your timeline, preferences and lifestyle are all part of the conversation.”

Beauty in Motion:

What’s the difference between Botox and filler? “Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes muscles. It targets dynamic wrinkles, the lines that appear with repeated facial expressions. Filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a molecule naturally found in the skin that helps with hydration and structure. It can restore volume or enhance features such as lips, cheeks or the jawline.”

Looking natural with Botox, filler and medical aesthetics Your skin is constantly evolving, and your treatments should evolve with it. Our approach is all about beauty in motion — a method that has become a Living Beauty trademark. At Living Beauty, we specialize in the “untouched” look, using precise techniques to enhance your features without overdoing it. Here, Adela Medrano, Living Beauty’s Nurse Practitioner & Medical Director, explains the approach and shares the answers to her eight most frequently asked questions.

New Brands We Love

What new technology are you most excited about? “The Clear + Brilliant laser is a gentle, non-invasive resurfacing treatment that helps improve skin tone, texture and overall radiance. It’s perfect for patients who want to refresh their skin, minimize early signs of aging or maintain a healthy glow with little to no downtime.” What treatments can improve skin texture? “SkinVive is designed to improve hydration and overall skin quality, giving a smoother and more refreshed appearance. PRP, especially when paired with microneedling, uses your own platelets to stimulate healing and collagen production, which can help improve tone, texture and elasticity.” What can I do to give my results longevity? “SPF is essential, since sun exposure is one of the biggest accelerators of skin aging. A skin care routine designed for your specific needs, along with hydration, balanced nutrition and healthy habits, will help support and extend your results, as will regular maintenance at the recommended intervals.”

What advice do you give to someone trying a neuromodulator for the first time? “These treatments have been used safely in medicine for decades, not only for aesthetics but also for things like migraines and muscle spasms. At Living Beauty, the goal is balance. We’re not aiming for a frozen look, but instead softening movement to enhance your natural features while keeping your expression unmistakably yours.” What are some alternatives to filler? “Filler is still a great option, but it’s not the only choice. An exciting alternative is Naturagel, a treatment made from your own blood. It works with your body to support tissue healing, collagen stimulation and subtle volume restoration. Where filler provides instant structure, Naturagel takes a regenerative approach.”
