But when it comes to the beauty products we use every day, there’s no denying our love of pretty packaging. On page 8, we examine why we prefer to surround ourselves with things we find alluring in “The Rules of Attraction” and I share some very pretty products to give this season in my gift guide on page 4. One of my favourite ways to enrich my perspective with new forms of beauty is by travelling. Fortunately, that no longer means leaving my trusted products behind. In “Packing Light” (page 5), we share the top products you need never be without, all in carry-on approved sizes. Find a spa at biologique-recherche.com

In reaching our personal goals, the road can get a little bumpy. Things often seem worse before they get better, with moments that can feel discouraging and times that test your patience. Take decluttering your closet, a task that inevitably results in creating a great big mess, with piles on the floor that need to be dealt with before you get your wardrobe to that Marie Kondo-approved state of Zen. When it comes to beauty, creating makeup looks or achieving hairstyles can often appear weird before they are completed. Take the cosmetic art of contouring, a technique with origins in the theatre: It looks positively frightening before it’s buffed and refined with foundation. Or growing out your bangs, which comes with countless bad hair days before that awkward phase is over. (We’ve all been there.) With skincare, treating specific conditions can sometimes leave skin looking or feeling a little worse before it improves. Biologique Recherche Lotion P50T, for example, is notorious for bringing blemishes to the surface of the skin as it purges. Laser treatments and chemical peels can leave skin red and irritated before revealing the fresher layer beneath. And sometimes, finding the right combination of active ingredients requires trial and error, a process that’s best guided by a skincare professional. “You will not find two people with the same skin. What works for you may not work for someone else. That is why it is always important to trust your skincare professional,” says Kassie Whitteker, Assistant Spa Director at the Miraj Hammam Spa in Toronto, adding that patience and consistency are key when it comes to achieving your goals.

“On average, it takes 28 days for your skin cells to fully turn over and it will generally take that long, or longer, to see results when starting a specific routine. We recommend a period of four to eight weeks before you can really tell if your skincare routine is effective.” Ultimately, beauty is about enjoying the journey. It’s a message that’s at odds with ondemand culture, but a good reminder that life isn’t always about achieving results. And after an eventful journey, arriving at the destination feels even sweeter. 
