WAYS YOU CAN HIRE & UTILIZE VETERANS IN YOUR COMPANY

Written by: India K Easley

Have you ever stopped and wondered how many of us know someone who is a veteran? Sometimes it s hard to differentiate between those who are still serving and those who are veterans if you do not see them in uniform What we fail to realize is that once an active-duty soldier retires from the military, they must return to civilian life, where everything is different Their usual daily routine has completely changed, and now they must readjust This means they must find new ways to cope, find new ways to survive, and find new employment opportunities to take care of their families. It has always been said that veterans do not know how to adjust to society once retired, but this is not the case

Many veterans are not allowed to adjust, let alone seek employment, and this causes them to spiral out It is up to us as a society and community to make a difference We must give veterans the opportunities needed to seek employment and utilize the skills that they ve obtained Thinking about the multiple jobs they may have had while serving this country - they may be able to use a great deal of them as a civilian

Thinking of ways to hire and utilize veterans in your company is easier than most think. It’s similar to hiring anyone else for the positions you have available Hiring a veteran means finding a position that they are interested and comfortable doing Ways to make the hiring process easier result in understanding the person and not the title

Yes, they may have served in the military, but this does not define them The potential employee may be a veteran, but they are still a normal person looking for sound employment. Matching a veteran with a veteran-friendly job is the first step Some tasks are ones that veterans may not be able to handle, and that’s okay Making sure that the positions available are suitable for them will decrease the number of veterans without jobs

However, veterans still have many challenges and obstacles that they have had to overcome while trying to re-enter the work environment After serving in the military, life may seem like it’s against them Making these suitable choices available to them is an amazing way to show how appreciative we are that they severed and also assist them with utilizing their skill set

A few ways we can utilize veterans in our companies are based on their;

Work ethic

Veterans often have an impressive work ethic Learning to work hard and use determination to accomplish a goal is one of the primary skills everyone learns when they first enter the armed forces. They are highly focused on the tasks they need to accomplish and work well as a team, ensuring that everyone contributes their part to a successful project Veterans may be used to working in uncomfortable, stressful situations, making them well-prepared for the challenges of a civilian job.

Organization

Because of the regimented structure of the military, veterans can bring impressive organizational skills to your business They are used to setting a schedule and maintaining habits in the military, which they can apply to their work schedule. The high-pressure environment of the military means that veterans learned how to keep track of all their priorities so that everything they need to accomplish gets done

Accountability

Veterans have a high level of personal accountability and can also encourage others on their team to be more efficient and dedicated to their work In the military, making mistakes can have deadly consequences, so veterans are committed to taking responsibility for their behavior. They take their assignments seriously and strive for excellence, just like they did when they were working as a precise part of a team

Leadership

The hierarchical structure of the military means that veterans are used to taking on extra responsibility and assuming leadership roles They observed different leadership styles from their commanding officers and likely had leadership responsibilities themselves throughout their military careers As a result, veteran employees have a high aptitude to grow in your company, mentor others and make strategic decisions (Indeed, 2023)
