“I am optimistic that ASEAN and India will be the backbone of IndoPacific cooperation” President Joko Widodo

ASEAN-India Partnership Creates Stability in Indo-Pacific Region A peaceful, stable, and prosperous ecosystem must be created in the Indo-Pacific region, said President Joko Widodo when speaking at the ASEAN - India Summit, Session of India Prime Minister Retreat with Heads ASEAN member countries at the Rasthrapati Bhawan on Thursday (1/25). “I believe through the ASEAN-India partnership, a peaceful, stable and prosperous IndoPacific region will be achieved,” said the president. He further said the Indo-Pacific concept can be developed based on the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation of ASEAN where all the key countries have become parties to the treaty. “The development of the Indo-Pacific concept should also be carried out openly, transpa rently, inclusively based on the dialogue, the desire to cooperate and uphold international law,” said the president, adding that

with a such concept, unhealthy rivalry that may lead to ‘power projection’ can be avoided. The concept would be good if carried out through building block approach, among others through strengthening bilate ral and plural-lateral cooperation such as ASEAN-India; strengthening regional mechanisms such as IORA in the Indian Ocean and ASEAN-led mechanism, especially East Asia Summit (EAS) Pacific Ocean; linkage and integration of the mechanisms of cooperation among countries in Indian and Pacific Oceans. “By building a block, it will

create an Indo-Pacific region that can become one of the main sources of economic growth, or trade and industry center of the world,” said the president. He underlined the maritime cooperation as a key in the development of Indo-Pacific region and Indonesia has a strong commitment in enhancing maritime cooperation through IORA and EAS. “I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for India’s support for ASEAN’s centrality. I am optimistic that ASEAN and India will be the backbone of Indo-Pacific cooperation,” said the president.

Last year ASEAN celebrated its 50th anniversary, while the ASEAN-India partnership reached 25 years. “If for the past 50 years, ASEAN has succeeded in creating a peace and welfare ecosystem in Southeast Asia, then the ASEAN-India partnership should also be able to contribute equally to the wider region,” the president added. Prior to joining the retreat, President and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo attended a luncheon for the heads of ASEAN member countries with Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and

Ms. Savita Kovind, ended with group photos. After the retreat, President Jokowi along with other heads of ASEAN member countries and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked to the Mughal Gardens for group pictures again, where President Jokowi stood bet ween Cambodian Prime Minister and Laos PM. In the afternoon, the president attended the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit and the launch of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Stamps at the Taj Diplomatic Enclave Hotel, New Delhi. (KEMLU/TPP)

President Jokowi Targets Indonesia to Become Largest Digital Economic Power in ASEAN The demand for manpower in the data technology sector is expected to increase significantly in the future. The data from LinkedIn as of January 2018, there were 251 vacancies for data scientists and 4,281 job openings related to the data technology, including data engineer, data analyst and business intelligence in Indonesia. Deputy II of the Presidential Chief of Staff, Yanuar Nugroho, said that the administration of President Joko Widodo has a great vision in the digital economy sector. President Jokowi has targeted Indonesia to become the

largest digital economic power in ASEAN in 2020 with a projected value of e-commerce transactions to reach US$130 million. To achieve the target, the government is processing every online transaction into informative data. “Therefore, the country will need many experts in data technology,” said Yanuar in a written statement on Thursday (1/18). According to Yanuar, the demand for workforce in the digital economy sector is still difficult to meet completely, because the data science needs

other sciences. The candidates who want to work in the data technology have to understand the business and also its technological approach. The teaching methods are more realistic for practical learning and are divided into 4 scientific areas, namely data science, data engineering, business intelligence and business analytics. “So, the combination of the 4 scientific areas will form a more effective team in running data technology applications in the business world,” Yanuar said. Primarily the works that related to solving any problem in investment and export matters, said President Jokowi. “Everything must be in one line, one direction so that the problems faced in the field can be handled properly,” said the president at the Presidential Palace on Friday (1/5). The president also reminded his staff to utilize and safeguard the international trust on the Indonesian management in economy which is considered improving by upgrading the rating.

The ranking on ease of doing business jumped to the 72nd position in 2017, the investment rating has also been upgraded by the international rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S & P), while the grade of Indonesia’s long-term debt rating in foreign and local currency rose to BBB with outlook stable according to Fitch Ratings. “All of that is a giant leap,” said the president. Meeting with President Jokowi, Japan Promises to Speed Up Six Major Infrastructure Projects

Vice President JK: Almost All National Economic Indicators Improve Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) has said that we should be grateful because almost all the indicators of national economy have improved, although the inflation rate is still considered too high by some parties. “Our debt is under control, our national politics is good, stable, the commodity prices once were blamed for causing economy downturn now are good, so we cannot blame on them again,” he said while opening of the trade of Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) at BEI Building, Jakarta on Tuesday (1/2). “Our economy grew 5 percent due to the falling prices of coal, rubber and palm oil previously. Now Alhamdulillah (thank God)

they rise,” he added. In politics, JK continued, everything was fine although many people still worried some chaos would happen in the election year of 2019. “Such a thought is in the past. In the last three election years, it was always peaceful because the campaign is now different. We use the internet more than rally on the streets, so there is less physical clash.” The good conditions have stimulated the economy to grow further, amid the uncertainty of the world situations. “The Middle East, especially Iran and Iraq, is now getting edgy. However, it does not affect our economy because we have a big market. Besides usually if there is a prob-

lem in the oil-rich countries, the oil price will increase and will be followed by the rise in prices of other commodities such as coal and rubber,” JK said. He called on the investors and public companies to invest more in the real sector instead of in the capital market. “They should build more factories or distribution networks to grow the retail sector.” JK added that one way to encourage the investments is by lowering the interest rates and gradually Bank Indonesia has been doing it. “It’s meant to push investments in the real sector, instead of saving the money in time deposits. The lower interest rate has also in-

creased the index of the capital market.” Previously during the ce remony of closing trade on year end 2017 in the same place led by the president, Financial Services Authority (OJK) Chairman Wimboh Santoso said, “We thank all parties; the listed companies, the authority and the market players for their contribution to make the market bullish.” Attending the opening trade ceremony were Wimboh Santoso, Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardoyo, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati. Japan said it will speed up the completion of six major infrastructure projects in Indonesia as agreed by President Joko Widodo and Ja panese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The Japanese intention was revealed when President Joko Widodo received a delegation led by Japanese Prime Minister’s special envoy Toshihiro Nikai who attended the 60th anniversary of di plomatic relations between the two countries at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Friday (1/19). President Jokowi said at a meeting with Shinzo Abe in Manila, Philippines, in November 2017, the two countries agreed on several issues. “We agreed to accelerate the completion of some infrastructure projects. At that time, I said let us finish soon the cooperation projects we have agreed on,” said Jokowi. Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, who attended meeting in the Jakarta, said there are six infrastructure projects in Indonesia carried out in cooperation with Japan. The first project, according to Basuki, is the construction of Patimban Port. This pro ject is scheduled for groundbreaking in May 2018 so that in March 2019 there will be a soft opening. Budi said his

ministry was assigned to build the access road from the national road to the Patimban Port. The second project is the Phase 1 of MRT project which has to be completed by the end of 2018 and immediately on trial so that in 2019 can be operated. The third project, continued Budi, “Is the West and East corridor of MRT which is in the preparation stage to select the consultant.” The fourth project is Jakarta-Surabaya express train which will be re-evaluated on the tariff so that it will be cheaper than the projection and preliminary calculation, while the feasibility study is being prepared. The fifth project is Trans-Sumatra Toll Road Project from Padang to Pekanbaru. “We have a new route with a tunnel and connecting road. The tunnel will be financed by Japan under the transfer of technology agreement. The connecting road will be financed by to Hutama Karya as a contractor assigned by the government,” said Budi. Such a financing concept will not burden the state budget. According to the plan, the groundbreaking will be held in the end of 2018. The sixth project is Marsela Block. “Japan will start it soon. They are also preparing the fishery development projects in outer islands such as Natuna and Morotai,” said Budi. (ANT/TPP)

PT Ratu Prabu Energi Tbk plans to build the mass transportation mode of Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) and prepares an investment of US$30 billion. Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan expressed his appreciation for the company’s business plan. He reminded Ratu Prabu about the three requirements to meet for building LRT. “Investors must fulfill the three requirements,” Luhut said in his office on Friday (1/12). First, Ratu Prabu must prioritize the local contents in the cons truction of the LRT, since many companies in Indonesia are already capable to produce various products used in the LRT project. Luhut said the current Jabodebek and Palembang LRT project uses the local contents about 50 percent. If some contents have

to be imported, the technology transfer system must adhere to them. Second, the LRT must be environmentally friendly. The third is using Indonesian human resources as many as possible. “This must be prioritized, even if they need to be trained first,” Luhut said. Not only Luhut, previously, SOEs Minister Rini Soemarno also responded positively to the plan of PT Ratu Prabu Energi Tbk to build the LRT in Jabodetabek. This shows the transportation projects in Indonesia is getting preferred by the private companies. According to her, some big cities are indeed in desperate need of efficient and cheap mass transportation, since the grow of the roads cannot follow the grow of the number of motor vehicles. With many private companies

participating in the infrastructure projects, Rini added, it will assist the government in building this nation. “Mass transportation mode is a must for Jakarta and its surroundings. If private companies want to build one, they are welcomed,” said Rini in Indramayu. The construction of the current Jabodetabek and Palembang LRT project was assigned by the government to the state-owned enterprise (SOE) to work on to support the Asian Games 2018. The section in Palembang is targeted to finish in 2018, while the one in Jabodebek will be fully completed in 2019. Rini said she will leave the door wide open if Ratu Prabu wanted to cooperate with the SOEs in building its LRT. “If we can work together, private and state-owned companies, why not,” she added. Agriculture Minister Boasts Indonesia for Stopping Corn and Red Onion Imports The Ministry of Agriculture held a National Working Meeting on Agricultural Development 2018 on Monday (1/15) with a theme of “Lifting the Farmers’ Welfare” at Hotel Bidakara, Jakarta, attended by about 1,500 participants. During the occasion, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman presented a number of achievements in his 3 years term of office. The first achievement is that Indonesia does not import medium rice anymore in 2016-2017. “I want to show some achievements of the Agriculture Ministry up to this day,” he said. Amran’s moves to prevent Indonesia from importing the medium rice is by maximizing unused land like the one in the swamp areas and increasing the planting frequency from 2 times to 3 times a year. “As example is the Rawa Lebak. The swam area used to be flooded and became a playground in the rainy season while in the dry season it was on fire. Now it has been transformed into 1,000 hectares of paddy fields. We have 10 million hectares of swam areas like that, potentially to be developed into paddy fields. If we can harvest 3 times, 30 million tons of rice will be produced

per year. This is what we should pursue,” Amran said. The other achievement, according to Amran, is that Indonesia has been exporting the red onion to 6 countries. “We (formerly) imported 12,000 tons of red onion, today we export it to 6 countries. We become exporter from previously importer country.” On the corn production, Indonesia has also been experiencing surplus lately, so it does not need to import the commodity anymore, said the minister. “We used to spend Rp12 trillion for importing the corn. Other countries asked how could you stop importing in such a short time? I answered, just three ways, work, work, work,” he said. The national meeting was also attended by Heads of Regional Work Unit (SKPD) of the ministry, Director Gene ral of Domestic Trade of the Trade Ministry, Director General of Water Resources of the PUPR Ministry, Director Ge neral of Development and Community Empowerment of the Village Ministry, Director General of Taking Care the Poor of the Social Affairs Ministry, KPK officials, top brasses of the Police, Army Commander Assistant and other officers. Other sectors to be deve-

loped in the cooperation are digital economy and finance technology (finatech). Fintech is considered the most potential business to develop in Indonesia, while in Australia, fintech is currently growing significantly and becomes the attention of government, including in South Australia. Many Indonesian startups are growing into unicorns. Citing World Economic Forum (WEF) data, Traveloka is one of 57 startups who have become unicorns. Gojek and Tokopedia have also become phenomenal startups that attract the attention of many countries, including Australia. “The success stories of Indonesian startups need to be shared with the digital economy ecosystem in Australia. On ideas and creativity, Indonesia is not inferior. However, Indonesia still can learn from Australia on the aspect of regulation, incentives, infrastructure development and business plan,” said Hermanus. Director Narelle Slivak welcomed Indonesia’s intention to deepen cooperation in the creative sector with South Australia. “We believe that the people-to-people relationship, the synergies between the creative ecosystems of both parties will further strengthen the cooperation between West Java and South Australia,” said Slivak. To Build 200 Km LRT in Jakarta, Ratu Prabu Prepares Rp320 Trillion

Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission V Fary Djemi Francis has inspected the construction of the Petuk I Bridge in Kolhua Village, Maulafa District, Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The bridge was claimed to be the first in Indonesia to use prestressed concrete girder technology. In his working visit, Fary was accompanied by a number of officials of the National Road Implementation Center (BPJN) X Kupang NTT. Fary was inspecting the prog-

ress of the bridge construction to make sure the works were done timely and will be functioned in 2018. Currently, Fary said, he is trying to get the fund from the state budget 2018 for installing supporting ornaments at the top of the bridge. “When I accompanied the Minister of PUPR to the Petuk Bridge recently, the minister asked me to put ornaments with NTT characteristics. SOEs Minister Rini Soemarno appreciated the physical progress of Makassar New Port (MNP) development which has now reached 58.26%. She expressed her appreciation after inspecting the MNP site on Monday (1/15). “I see the progress of MNP development and I believe the project can be completed in October 2018 instead of by the end of 2018 as scheduled,” said the minister in a press release. She said the SOEs Ministry deeply appreciated Pelindo IV for its efforts to speed up the completion the national strategic project amid various obstacles

on the way, including problems in land acquisition and weather factors. “Not to mention the discovery of 9 active old landmines which certainly took time to deactivate them before the works could be continued. I applaud the current MNP progress and I believe Pelindo IV can complete it as soon as possible,” Rini said. She added that she hoped the road to access the port would be completed by the end of February. President Director of PT Pelindo IV, Doso Agung, said the construction of MNP Phase I is tar-

(11/2/2017). Fary said the construction of the bridge had been planned since 1980 and can only be realized now. He said he expected the bridge to break down the congestions in Kupang City. The bridge as part of outer ring road of Kupang City will connect the road from Tenau Kupang Port, leading to the southern part of Kupang City, to several districts on the mainland of South Timor, South Central Timor, North Central Timor, Belu and Malaka. “We want to make the Petuk

Bridge become an icon of Kupang City,” said Fary. In the meantime, Head of BPJN X Kupang NTT, Hadrianus Bambang Nurhadi Widihartono said that the bridge uses construction technology of prestressed concrete girder with the length of 320 meters. “The bridge has been built since 2015 and once I become the Head of BPJN X, within eight months the construction has been completed,” said Bambang. The fund spent on the construction of the bridge is about Rp235.5 billion. (PU/TPP)

PT Ratu Prabu Energi (Tbk) has intended to build a transportation mode of 200 kilometers Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Jakarta and its surroundings by preparing fund amounting to Rp320 trillion. The intention was revealed by the management of PT Ratu Prabu Energi while meeting with Vice Governor of DKI Jakarta Sandiaga Uno at the Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (1/4). Sandiaga said the fund to be prepared was around US$25 billion or equivalent to Rp320 trillion. The construction will take place for 5 years and begin in 2020. “The total fund needed is around Rp320 trillion,” said Sandi.

He added the government will not provide any support financially for the project. “This is purely business to business,” he said. According to Sandi, PT Ratu Prabu Energi has also coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation and Jabodetabek Transportation Management Agency (BPTJ) regarding the project. “They have coordinated with BPTJ and Transportation Ministry. The plan is being firm up. About the jobs will be created, we still study it. The sure thing is that this project will make Jakarta to have proper rail-based transportation mode like major cities abroad,” he said. (DTK/ TPP)

AP I Ensures Operation of New Yogyakarta Airport Will Not Miss Deadline Despite some rejections, PT Angkasa Pura I ensures the construction of New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) will not be postponed from the schedule. The airport is targeted to start operating partly in 2019. President Director of PT Angkasa Pura I, Faik Fahmi, said that despite the protests from residents and a group of activists, the process of land clearing and infrastructure development has started early this

year. “We target the runway to be completed by the end of 2018, so in April 2019 it will be operational,” Faik said at Bangsal Kepatihan on Monday (1/15). He added the construction of NYIA is divided into two parts namely the airside or the construction of runway and land side which includes the supporting facilities such as terminal and waiting room. “For terminal, it is targeted to finish in 2019,” he said.

“The completion of Pandaan-Malang toll road will accelerate the distribution flow of goods and services, as well as improve the economy in East Java,” Dwimawan added. In addition to accelerating the construction of the Pandaan-Malang toll road, the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry is also finishing the NgawiKertosono and Solo-Ngawi sections which are planned to start operating in the near future. Atmawidjaja said the inauguration of the Ngawi-Kertosono highway operation will be adjusted to the schedule of the president’s activities. (JPN/TPP)

To make the airport able to be operated immediately, he called on the community to support the airport development that is located not far from the southern coast of Kulonprogo. To those who still reject the project, Angkasa Pura I said it will keep trying to find a way to settle down through friendly discussions. “We keep trying to find a solution,” Faik Fahmi said. Meanwhile, Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan HB X left the rejection problem to AP I and Kulonprogo Regency administration to solve. The king of Yog yakarta Sultanate said he believed both parties will be able to solve the problem. “I can’t do all, let Angkasa Pura and Kulonprogo government to settle it this time,” said Sri Sultan HB X. Kendal Regent Mirna Annisa at the end of the year presented the Bupati Award, witnessed by thousands of residents in the Kendal square on Sunday (12/31) night. With a big smile on her face, Imamatul Kutsiah received the award. She and her aunt won one of the eight categories for the Bupati Award. Both were rewarded for their efforts to spread the love to the environment. “We teach the community, especially the women in the community groups of PKK, how to manage the waste better. West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan held a courtesy call with Shizouka Prefecture Vice Governor Takashi Namba at Pakuan State Building, Bandung, on Monday (1/15). “We discussed some issues, especially the cooperation between Shizuoka Airport Mt. Fuji and West Java International Airport (BIJB) Kertajati,” said Aher, the nickname of Ahmad Heryawan. The visit of Vice Governor Shizuoka to West Java returned the visit of Governor of West Java to Shizuoka in November 2017 for signing a joint agreement between West Java Province and Shizouka Prefecture in economy and human resource development. The cooperation, according to Aher, is related to the opening of Kertajati-Shizuoka direct flight and cargo shipments. One of the activities realized under the cooperation was the participation of Shizuoka Prefectural Government at the West Java Eco Marathon in Pangalengan, Bandung Regency in October 2017. Other activities were sending internship participants from West Java to the Shizuoka Prefectural Government Office and participating in the Food Expo held in Shizuoka Prefecture. “Next, we will initiate the cooperation between the Faculty of Nursing UNPAD and the Faculty of Nursing University of Shizuoka,” he said, adding both parties also explored the potentials in tourism, trade, and investment. Aher said Takashi told him Shizuoka has nature tourist destinations like the ones in West Java. During his visit, Takashi paid a great attention to the Gedong Gincu mango. According to him, being in the Pacific Ocean with warm climate, Shizuoka City’s residents are very fond of the mango originat-

who asks to be served, I will punish firmly,” he said. He further said that as long as he leads the region, the obstacles and challenges may always come up but will not hinder his intention to build Soppeng Regency and realize a better government that is serving well. “It has proven, given during our administration the economy has increased significantly from 5.1% to 8.2% or up 3%,” said Kaswadi. He also said the banks are now willing to provide cre dit for small business without difficult conditions. “We as the government will facilitate to get such a credit,” he said. According to Kaswadi, this year Soppeng government has been building a ring road (pioneer road) and in 2018 it will be paved. ed from Indramayu-Majalengka. Regarding human resource development in West Java, the governor said he sought the opportunity of knowledge transfer by preparing high quality human resources in West Java for hire by the companies in Shizuoka. In the meeting, Governor Aher also served the Waringin Pangalengan coffee to Takashi. This West Java origin coffee has been marketed worldwide. “The coffee is very rich in taste,” Takashi said with amazement. According to Aher, the coffee is very special with a strong aroma. “When touching the tongue, it will feel a little fruity with medium acidity that spreads to all the mouths. In fact, at the end, there is a sweet sensation,” he said. The serving of the best coffee of West Java aimed to honor the guests, he added. “West Java and Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan have committed to cooperate in various fields. The Sister Provinces MoU was signed in Hamamatsu in November 2017. So, all the hospitality is to venerate the guests and warm up the relationship between West Java and Shizuoka.” (TMP/TPP)

companies considered having contributed to the social progress in Kendal. Muryono, Head of Bupati Award Section, said this award aims to reward their services in promoting and developing Kendal. “The award presentation is deliberately done in the Kendal square so that the people can watch it. The hope is that it will motivate them to do the same,” said Muryono. Kendal government also celebrated the anniversary of Persik Kendal which coincidentally falls on January 1st. Mirna congratulated the soccer club, the pride of Kendal people, for its anniversary. (TPP)

Soppeng Regent: We Serves the Community, not to be Served Instead Soppeng Regent Andi Kaswadi Razak said he would crack down on any official who want to be served by the community. The reason is because officials are the people’s servants. Kaswadi said that during the declaration of Mappadeceng Movement (Gema) of Soppeng while celebrating the turn of the year from 2017 to 2018. According to Kaswadi, Gema is a strategic program with activities motivated to help the needy people. “We will move them to achieve a decent and better life,” he was quoted by makassar.sindonews.com as saying. Kaswadi added he hoped no single Soppeng person would feel to be left behind by the local government. Governor Offers Japan to Build Car Factory in East Java East Java Governor Dr. H. Soekarwo has offered Japan to build a car factory in East Java, considering the bright prospect of its economy. Besides, having a factory in East Java will cut the distribution cost. The offer was presented by Pakde Karwo, the nickname of the governor, while receiving the visit of Japanese Consul General in Surabaya, Masaki Tani in Surabaya on Tuesday (6/6/2017). Pakde Karwo said the bright prospect of East Java economy is evidenced by the relatively stable economic growth from 6.08% in 2013, 5.86% in 2014, 5.44% in 2015, and 5.55% in 2016

while until the first quarter of 2017, the economic growth in East Java reached 5.37% (YoY). The income per capita in East Java also continues to increase to US$3,600 in 2016 from US$2,100 in 2009. In 2017 it is expected to reach US$3.900 and in 2020 is targeted to reach US$5000. “When the income per ca pita rises, the middle class also grows. So, the purchasing power is stronger, including in buying a car. That’s the potential that can be utilized,” said Pakde Karwo. Currently Japan puts its car manufacturers in Thailand for the distribution in Southeast Asia. “If they build a factory here, the car price will be cheap-

Andi Tenrisessu in his report said Gema is a movement born from the anxiety and optimism towards poverty alleviation in Soppeng Regency. “Although poverty in the regency is not that severe compared to other regions, but we want to accelerate the equation and better prosperity for the society in Soppeng Regency,” Tenrisessu said on Sunday (12/31) night at Watansoppeng. The secretary added based on the data from the Soppeng Central Bureau of Statistics, the number of poverty in 2016 reached 8.45% of the total po pulation in the regency familiarly called Latemmamala Land. Gema Soppeng 2018 was signed by Soppeng Regent Andi Kaswadi Razak, Soppeng Vice Regent Supriansah, together with the leaders of Forkopimda and all Heads of Local Government Work Units (SKPD) in Soppeng Regency. er and there will be more people who can afford to buy it. Moreover, East Java is the economic center of Eastern Indonesia with 120 million population,” Pakde Karwo added. He also discussed about 40 Japanese companies who have the principle permit but have not realized their investment plan yet, reaching Rp2.5 trillion. “We told Masaki that we are ready to help if there is any obstacle.” Pakde Karwo proposed to have a meeting with the 40 companies, accompanied by the Consul General, whether in Japan or in East Java. Such a meeting was ever done with the result eight big Japanese companies expanded their business in East Java, one of which is PT Ajinomoto. “Investing in East Java is guaranteed to be profitable. We guarantee the availability of land, sufficient electricity supply, ease of licensing, and qualified workers,” he said. Responding Pakde Karwo, Masaki said he would invite the leaders of major automotive companies to discuss further the possibility to set up a factory in East Java. “We will also talk to the 40 companies whether they face any difficulty,” he added. According to Masaki, Japan and East Java have established long-term cooperation, in culture, education, social and humanity. Therefore, he said he is optimistic the cooperation in the economy will further strengthen the relationship. (DLK/TPP)

OPINION

APPRECIATING ONE’S COUNTRY: BUT EDUCATION FIRST

Prof Scott Younger OBE DEng(Hon) PhD International Chancellor, President University

The lack of appreciation that many people have over how their country came about before their life times is common in most countries but particularly so in Indonesia. This is why the early chapters of S.D. Darmono’s book, Building a Ship While Sailing, when he talks about the Founding Fathers, is important to today’s younger generation. I was sharply reminded of this again when I picked up a book about The Foundations of Scotland – from the earliest times to 1286, which was written 80 years by Dr Agnes Mure Mackenie. In the preface she writes “History is more than a study of things past. It is a study of the roots of the present, of the seeds of the future. No man can guide present or future who forgets it, and one major cause of Scotland’s unhappy present (1930s) is that, though her sense of the past is still keen and vivid, she recalls it confusedly and in part. If she is to shape her future worthily, that past must be recalled and understood, not as a series of highly cultured stories but as a consecutive process of event.” This remains valid today and tomorrow, and can be applied to many emerging new nations. In the case of Indonesia, there is a huge rich cultural history across the archipelago, much of it still needing enlightened scholarship. However, it is safe to say that History as a subject will barely feature in today’s national school curriculum. Nevertheless, a proper understanding of a nation’s history provides the necessary glue for its foundation and how it perceives itself as it interacts with other nations and how it can help maintain peace among the commonwealth of nations, many still in a fractious state. Nearly every, if not every, nation that is deemed to be mature and developed did not

achieve that condition without a lot of strife and soul searching over hundreds of years, With modern systems of communication accelerating at a frightening speed for older generations, it is very easy for younger people to spend time thinking about their immediate needs and forget the social graces from interacting with fellow human beings. Taking ‘selfies’ is not a deep, serious form of social interaction! (Subject for a debate? Where does analog fit in the future digital world?) But the future is going to be even more challenging than the past, and how are we going to appreciate our history if our education is lacking, and falls short of what we need to play our part in making the story of the future. It is generally understood that infant brain development needs to be nurtured, with most responsibility falling on the parents, but the difficulty then lies in the abi l ity of parents to recognise this and provide the necessary encouragement, if they ae not adequately educated themselves. It is said that the foundation of each of our beings is set in the first 5-7 years of our lives – the Jesuit mantra was “give me the boy until he is 7, and I will give you the man”; by then, we should have learned 50% of our life skills and what we need for the rest. The very young brain, perhaps unwittingly, is like a sponge as it grows, absorbing what it sees and senses. Just watch today’s child with a smart phone or tablet! However, there is a long tail across the Indonesian po pulation. There are too many adults and children, who are deprived and do not have the opportunity to be able to develop their personalities to their full potential. Just surviving is enough and understanding history for natio n al development – well that has

to be someone else’s problem! And where is education? While infrastructure looms high, and correctly so, on the list of imperatives for government attention, the paucity in the quality of education in too many locations is arguably even more important. The World Bank and several large monitoring institutions have assessed Indonesian education, especially at elementary and junior high levels, as one of the poorest in the world. Evidence of this can be seen across the archipelago, particularly when moving away from administrative centres. The budget applied directly to the Education Ministry, IDR 419 trilllion in 2016, and some double that of 6 years earlier, was not inconsiderable, but there is little sign of expenditure converting into an overall improvement in quality. Some would even say that, while the number of children requiring good edcuation is increasing, the quality is declining and this raises another challenge in terms of the Indonesian workforce competing with ASEAN counterparts in the years ahead. There are still thousands of locations where little or no teaching is provided, and then of variable quality. The matter is often exacerbated by the lack of access to electricity a problem which could be solved quickly in thousand of locations by the installation of solar panels with small battery storage capability in school buildings. This would allow connection for more than half a day and the ability to allow computer hook up. Further, because there is also a dire shortage of qualified teachers, prepared lessons covering the national curriculum and more, because the curriculum is far from challenging for young eager minds, can be brought onto large monitoring screens and thus the quality of content assured. The class

minder/ teacher can also learn. We know this can be done from more than 19 years experience on the East Bali Po verty project where, for a mostly illiterate community of 17,000 people across 19 villages, the project yayasan had 6 schools built by the communities themselves, with each powered through solar. In the beginning, most children were not at school and did not have proper access to one. Over the past ten years the project has taught an average of 300 children a year, and produced its first university graduates. Every effort is made to expand the teaching beyond the national curriculum and encourage the natural talents of young minds They are also taught about their immediate natural environment and how to use it and appreciate it and, in this way they have learned to use the land to wi den the cultivation of crops and improve diets, teacning their parents in the process. The solutions offered to quickly widen the access to school education of the huge mass of children currently deprived are not ‘rocket’ science and not expensive to carry out. What a difference this could make to the future of the country! Just a change in mindset and determination to win. Then the future leaders of the country can really appreciate the foundation of the nation that their forefathers fought for. There are probably over 4 million thildren with IQs of 130 and above – gifted to genius – and only a small fraction of those is having access to proper schooling.

months ago to Bantaeng Regency, South Sulawesi. We are ready to support the tourism development in the region.” Meanwhile, Regent Nurdin Abdullah expressed his gratitude to Jababeka and PATA for the cooperation in developing Bantaeng Regency, especially on the tourism and in attracting foreign investors to invest. “Hopefully this cooperation will be realized and of course we are grateful to Jababeka Group for its support,” he said. According to Nurdin, Bantaeng Regency used to be unprivileged region, but with a better governance in managing the abundant natural resources, in 10 years the regency has been improving significantly.

“Bantaeng is indeed one of the smallest regencies in South Sulawesi, but we are grateful for having beautiful area from the beach to this plain. We manage all to the fullest. In 2008 Bantaeng ranked 199 or a disadvantaged area but 10 years later Bantaeng is no longer a lagging region,” he added. Meanwhile CEO PATA Poernomo said he hoped the cooperation between Bantaeng and PATA would generate the best results in tourism and investment. “We have been working together with several regions that have tourism potentials. Hopefully it will give the best results,” he said. To Attract More Visitors, KIJA Will Add Hotel Rooms to 10,000 in Tanjung Lesung The management company of Special Economic Zone Tanjung Lesung, PT Kawasan Industri Jababeka Tbk (KIJA), will increase the number of hotel rooms there to 10,000 in the next three years. “We believe the target of 10,000 rooms in three years will be achieved. We need the technology from China since it can build 1 tower of 100 floors in 15 days. We have to cooperate with Japan, China, Europe and Indonesian parties as well. Jababeka cannot do it all alone, must be together,” said Chairman of Jababeka Group S.D. Darmono in a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (1/4/1). The additional rooms are expected to attract more tourists, either local and

overseas, to visit Tanjung Lesung. KIJA still opens the opportunity for other parties to invest in and support the development of Tanjung Lesung which has become one of the 10 National Tourism Strategic Areas (KSPN). According to S.D. Darmono, to develop Tanjung Lesung to its optimal potentials, it would need a huge investment of more than Rp10 trillion. He said that his company will add the public facilities and entertainment spots in the tourism area. “We have to build and build, add hotel rooms, build more hotels, add public facilities, build a golf course, Marina, shopping mall, a zoo, as well as painting gallery and cultural center. All should continue to be added up,” he concluded. (IND/TPP)

Triponyu: Solo Tour Marketplace Offers Local Solutions The Indonesian tourism industry has welcomed a new digital startup from Solo that offers local solutions for travelers, named Triponyu. Founded by Agustinus Adhitya Pramono (CEO), Onny Sumantri (COO), Samuel Joshep (CTO), and Alfonsus Aditya Prabowo (CFO & CBDO), the company was launched in July 2016. According to Alfonsus Aditya Prabowo (Adit), Triponyu is basically a business platform that gives travelers and local guides access to connect to each other. The local guides can offer their tour packages through Triponyu. Adit said it would create unique and customized tour for every traveler. “In Triponyu, the local guides can be travelers and travelers can be local guides. These local guides are hosts located in a tourist destination able to provide attractive tour packages. They will arrange tour packages with their own prices. To become a host, there will be a process of data verification and tour package checking to provide certainty, security, and comfort for the travelers,” Adit said. Triponyu’s vision of connecting people and happiness is expected to provide an opportunity for everyone to have friendships and experience an unforgettable tour. Meanwhile its mission is to utilize the potentials of

the region, to help the small business community, to create self-employment, and to increase awareness of the diversity of culture and natural beauty of Indonesia. “What makes us different is because we are the first startup that carries the concept of feel the experience with locals. So far, the tour packages offered are very conventional that we don’t think interesting, exciting, and fun enough,” said Adit. “Local people know better the area, so as tour guides they can make the tour more interesting while helping the economy of local community. In Triponyu, everyone can become local guides and their reputation will be determined by their creativity in creating unique tour package,” he added. Triponyu, Adit further said, is open for investment and cooperation with other parties and targets to grow significantly year to year. “We need investment to build infrastructure and carry out our next plan. Capex will be mostly focused on the infrastructure development. We will also seek cooperation with third parties to improve our services.” He also said that the company targets to increase the number of tourist visits through Triponyu by 5% in the first year and will grow further by 17% in the fifth year. “In the meantime, our target for gross profit is between 27% to 30% per year.” (DAILY/TPP)

The government gave 5 years contract of distribution to provide certainty in investment for the investors who have to build gas stations in the remote areas. (DTK/TPP)

Infrastructure Complete, Jababeka Prepares New Lot for Investors Kota Jababeka has been developed since 1989 on 5,600 hectares of land area, making it the largest township in Southeast Asia. Jababeka builds and operates its own power plant, dry port, water treatment plant, wastewater treatment facility, roads, high speed connectivity for communication, and also provides gas supply. As a pioneer of private industrial estates in Indonesia, Jababeka (KIJA) is supported with complete infrastructures. There are currently more than 1,650 multinational companies from 30 countries as the tenants of Jababeka Industrial Estate in Cikarang, Bekasi, with 730,000 workers and 10,000 expatriates. “For the investors, the Jababeka Industrial Estate is now offering a new phase of stage 8 where 20 ha of land plots are ready to use at the beginning of this year,” said Rudy Subrata, General Manager of Industrial Sales & Marketing Dept of

First Stage Sold Out, Jababeka Residence Markets Kawana Golf Residence Apartment Phase Two After successfully Sold Out in the first stage of marketing sales in the end of 2017 with a record of property selling price at Rp28 million/m2 in East Jakarta, PT Grahabuana Cikarang as the developer of Jababeka Residence has re-launched the topclass apartment of Kawana Golf Residence phase two. “Seeing the extraordinary response from the buyers, we reopen the opportunity for potential investors to buy Kawana Golf Residence phase two,” said President Director of PT Graha Buana Cikarang, Sutedja S. Darmono, in a Media Gathering & Press Conference on Jababeka Re sidence Outlook 2018 & Grand Product Knowledge of Kawana Golf Residence Phase Two in Jakarta on Tuesday (1/16). Sutedja said, in the first phase

in December 2017, 130 units of the premium product were sold out; from the initial target of 6 floors, it turned out 10 floors were sold. “This is very extraordinary, we create a new breakthrough, a new property market in Indonesia. Amid the slow market condition, it was sold well. Hopefully the phase two will be sold out too,” he said. The high interest of buyers, according to him, cannot be separated from the consumer confidence in Jababeka Residence property products. Besides any project always completed on time, the capital gain offered with the yield of 12% per year is also a factor for the success of the sales of Kawana Golf Residence Apartment. Additionally, the extensive

buildings are also offered, like the Premium Standard Factory Building (SFB) with the size of 1,035 m2 on 1,426 m2 of land plot and the prices starting from Rp13 billion. The SFB is suitable for manufacturing, electronics and automotive industries. There is also a building with 3 in 1 concept called the Three in One Building (TOB) which can function as office, warehouse, and workshop at once. The size of building is 453 m2 on a land plot starting from 540 m2. The TOB is offered at Rp4.5 billion. “For home industry, the Supporting Industrial Building

(SIB) will be suitable with the size of building at 155 m2 and the land plot at 411 m2, while the prices starting from Rp3 billion,” said Rudy. The big companies such as Mattel, Unilever, Samsung, LOreal, Kao, AkzoNobel, Kawan Lama, and many others have contributed to convince the investors to invest in Indonesia. “The development in the Jababeka Industrial Estate shows

a very good progress. This can be seen on the complete commercial facilities and a wide variety of property products for both residential and investment in KIJA. This is certainly according to the long-term plan of the company to make Kota Jababeka Cikarang as an integrated environmentally friendly township,” said Director of PT Jababeka Tbk, Sutedja S. Darmono. Therefore, he added, the Jababeka Industrial Estate which has turned into a self-sufficient township will continue to be developed to keep it growing to attract more investors. (TPP)

Standard Chartered Bank: Indonesia Achieves Momentum Amidst Moderate Economic Growth Standard Chartered Bank launched the Global Focus Economic Outlook 2018 report on Monday (1/22) during the annual Global Research Briefing, attended by the government re presentatives and company leaders at the Mandarin Hotel, Jakarta. Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo, Executive Director of Indonesian Political Indicator Burhanudin Muhtadi, Head of ASEAN Economic Research Standard Chartered Bank Edward Lee, Standard Chartered Bank’s Head of Thematic Research Madhur Jha, Standard Chartered Bank Indonesia Chief Economist Aldian Taloputra, Asia FX Strategist of Standard Chartered Divya Devesh, and Head of Rates and Credit Research of Standard Chartered Bank Kaushik Rudra became speakers in the event. With the theme of Beware of The Dog, based on the global research the report highlights the global, regional and national economic growth as well as geopolitical events. Edward Lee said the global economic growth this year is expected to rise by 3.9 percent year-on-year compared to

2017, while infrastructure development and government-run structural economic policies will continue to support the growth in ASEAN. Regarding the Indonesian economy, the bank predicts it will continue to grow driven by the government infrastructure projects, recovery in private investments due to improved investment climate and exports. “The policies in safeguarding the inflation and boosting the purchasing power through increased social spending, subsidies, and village funds will curb the weakening consumption of the private sector,” Aldian said, adding the investment in the private sector is expected to play a more active role this year, given the infrastructure spending would only increase by 6 percent in 2018. Global Research Briefing is a platform where stakeholders governments, industry leaders and business people can interact and gain the latest insights that can be an important consideration in taking strategic steps in business and collaboration. The key points about Indonesia’s economy in Global Research Report - Beware of the Dog:

1. GDP growth is expected to increase 5.2% y/y in 2018 from 5.1% y/y in 2017 due to stronger investment and exports and stable private consumption. 2. The government tends to refine policies to support household purchasing power, while keeping infrastructure spending a top priority. The fiscal deficit target of 2.2% of GDP will face risks due to the potential shortage of revenues. 3. Inflation is expected to be slightly higher at 4% y/y in 2018 due to normalizing food inflation and higher fuel prices. 4. A manageable inflation, C/A deficit, and a weak USD environment leave room for BI to keep interest rates unchanged this year. 5. Rupiah is reviewed as Neutral; sustained inflows may compensate for the widening current account deficit. 6. Political factors tend to be a more prominent consideration in policy-making during the electoral years. But historically, there is lack of political risks to economic performance. (TPP)

ENERGY PLTB Sidrap I Ready to Operate

katasulsel.com

After 50 Years Managed by Foreign Company, Mahakam Block Finally Taken Over by Pertamina The Wind Power Plant (PLTB) of Sidrap I will be operational soon after an interconnection trial with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) network showed a good result. A total of 20 out of planned 30 wind turbines and a substation have been ready to be connected with the PLN network. Each turbine has a capacity of 2.5 Megawatt (MW) or 50 MW in total for the 20 ready turbines. This wind farm is expected to support the national supply of electricity. Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Ignatius Jonan said he supported the operation of the Sidrap wind power plant. Jonan said

the electricity tariff from PLTB Sidrap is affordable. The tariff of the first stage is 11 cents US dollar per kWh flat. Then for the second stage, he will negotiate again. “The tariff of PLTB stage one is 11 cents US dollar per kWh flat; how about the second stage? We will negotiate again, I will ask the price to be lower,” said Jonan in Jakarta on the official website of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Monday (12/8). Sidrap I is the first commercial wind power plant (PLTB) in Indonesia. Once the project with an investment of US$150 million or approximately Rp2 trillion starts operating by PT

UPC Sidrap Bayu Energi, it is estimated to be able to supply about 70,000 households in South Sulawesi. As it is known, Sidrap PLTB is located in the hilly area of Mattirosari Village and Lainungan, Watangpulu Subdistrict, Sidenreng Rappang Regency (Sidrap), South Sulawesi, whose wind has the speed of 7 meters per second at a height of 80 meters. The total number of turbines to be installed is 30, each has a capacity of 2.5 MW with the height of 80 meters. The turbine is Class IIA with the propeller 57 meters long, bringing the total height of the turbine pole to 137 meters. (MTR/TPP)

After a long time controlled by Total, the Mahakam Block has finally been taken over by Pertamina. According to Secretary General of Central Executive Board (DPP) PDI P Hasto Kristiyanto, the move will strengthen the so vereignty of domestic energy. Hasto said his party believed Jokowi’s government will not need to make a decision to raise the fuel prices due to the thorough revamping of the energy sector. “The steps to make the ener-gy sector more efficient and competitive, especially on oil and gas, have shown an encouraging result. To avoid unnecessary political pressure, the fuel prices do not need to be increased, especially with the Pertamina’s

growing potential profits,” Hasto said recently. The belief was based on the success of President Jokowi’s government in strengthening the national energy sovereignty. The national energy policy is now increasingly prioritizing the national interests, through more just business agreements in the oil and gas sector. The various policy revisions made by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan have also increased the investment attractiveness in that sector which affects the livelihood of the people greatly. “The operation of the oil-rich Mahakam Block by Pertamina since January 1, 2018 not only reinforces the national capability in managing the upstream oil and gas sector, but also shows a

significant progress towards national energy sovereignty,” Hasto added. He appreciated the government through all levels of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas) and Pertamina for the breakthrough and their hard works. By controlling the oil block, Pertamina’s assets increase to Rp122 Trillion, Pertamina’s revenue certainly will increase as well as its profit. The increase in Pertamina’s assets and profit will support the SOE financially in running the country’s political economy. PDI Perjuangan, Hasto said, is proud that now the Mahakam Block is managed by Indonesian people. (AKR/ TPP)

Pelni Logistics Targets Profit of Rp49 Billion in 2018 mediaindonesia.com

Pelni Logistics, a subsidiary of PT Pelni (Persero), targets to earn profit at Rp49 billion in 2018 or an increase from Rp45 billion in 2017, considering the national logistics is predicted to grow well in the upcoming years. “Yes, that is our target,” said Pelni Logistics President Director Suharyanto in Jakarta on Sunday (1/7). That target, according to him, will be achieved by increasing the dry bulk loading and unloading as well as cooperating with other state-owned enterprises. “The dry bulk loading and unloading will grow positively, thanking to the “maritime highway” (short-sea shipping) program launched in November 2015 which has improved the distribution in the eastern Indonesia,” Suharyanto said. He added the company’s business development is still wide open with the occupancy rate of Pelni’s cargo ships is still about 70 percent today. Suharyanto also said he will increase the loading and unloading activities from non-captive sector of coal and other general cargoes as much as 5.3 million tons this year.

“That’s a significant rise from only 1.8 million tons in 2016,” he said. Pelni Logistics, established on March 31, 1986 under the name of PT Sarana Bandar Nasional, started to provide shipment services using the ships owned by its holding company and others. The services include the loading and unloading of goods from and to the ships (stevedoring), removing and transporting the goods from the pier to the warehouse and vice versa (cargodoring), as well as receiving and delivering the goods from the warehouse to the addressed recipient (receiving delivery). The cargoes shipped by the company include containers, general cargo, bulk fertilizer, cement, vehicles and heavy equipment. The company also serves loading/unloading bagged cargo such as rice, fertilizer and flour, as well as palletized cargo like plywood and ceramics. Loading and unloading of dry bulk such as coal and nickel, as well as liquid bulk such as palm oil (CPO) are also served by the company. It even serves door-todoor transportation services to support the main business.

In fact, since 2013 the company has established two subsidiaries running multimodal and port transportation business, and currently is developing its distribution channels under the brand of Pelni Mart. Pelni Logistics also plans to increase the number of containers to 1,200 from 980 right now. The company has intensified its cooperation with Haka Aston, Pos Logistics, Pupuk Indonesia, and Semen Indonesia. “Since August 2017 we cooperate with Semen Indonesia by shipping its cement from Makassar Port to Pomako Port in Timika,” Suharyanto said, adding that together with PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia, Pelni Logistics shipped tens of tones of staple goods to Wamena Regency in Papua to be sold at 25 percent below the market price as targeted by the government. Pelni Logistics booked Rp270 billion revenue in 2017. It has provided online services to facilitate the customers. “The application is also expected to increase the contribution of subsidiaries to the parent company by 15-20 percent in 2018,” said Suharyanto. (ANT/TPP)

PNBP Tariffs for Logistics Down Early this Year The Ministry of Transportation plans to reduce the Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) tariffs for the logistics sector early this year. At first the government will conduct a pilot project in Tanjung Priok Port as it accommodates 50% of the total of national logistics. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said the tariff reduction aimed to accelerate the improvement in the ease of doing business (EoDB) in Indonesia to be more competitive. The Transportation Ministry has been focusing on the three matters to support it, namely the use of online applications, the reduction of tariffs and time. “We must reduce the

tariffs, but it should be done cautiously. We have agreed to lower the tariffs, both corporate and non-tax revenues, so that the figure will be more competitive. If there is a difference it’s not that big,” he said at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs on Monday (1/15). Unfortunately, Budi refused to say the exact reduction will be, given he has to wait for approval from the Ministry of Finance. Hopefully the tariff reduction will increase the volume of transactions, he said. Regarding the EoDB rank, Budi said he did not set an exact target. The most important thing to him is to improve the quality of service so that the rank will certainly increase. To reduce time, according

to Budi, online applications should be used more to make the delivery of goods more effective and easy. The government has provided the facilities but are not utilized maximally, he said, adding that they will be improved to attract more users. In the meantime, about the three-day dwelling time at the port Budi said 30%-40% of goods still stay longer due to various reasons. Most of the cases are because the inspection is unfinished yet, while some others are because the owners have yet to find any warehouse to store or buyers. To deal with the problems, Budi has asked the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs to synergize the collaboration among the related parties. (BSN/TPP)

One of my favorite maestros is Affandi with his famous works of Potret Diri (Self Portrait) and Topeng Topeng Kehidupan (Masks

Unfortunately, amid the rapid development of information technology, their phenomenal works have never been promoted through the social media. Indonesia has many good and powerful painters recognized by the international community but in their own country they seem to be forgotten and not even come up in people’s conversation. According to Shinta, the event can be a momentum to see and appreciate their works. Shinta has asked the Chair-

man Jababeka and the Indonesian Arts Exhibition to also set up E-Gallery which publishes works of the maestros, so that their paintings can be enjoyed by wider communities worldwide. “With the current sophisticated digital platform and the ease of social media, we all can more easily share the works of Indonesian maestros to be enjoyed by anyone and anywhere,” she added. Jack Ma’s phenomenal figure has made KOWAS to choose him as the topic of this year’s anniversary. Founded on January 18, 2009, the community of senior entrepreneurs

In 2030 Indonesia to Become 5th Largest Economy in the World Communications and Informatics Minister Rudiantara has called on the industry players to anticipate the disruptive innovation in industrial development. “It is not the technology but the power of thinking that utilizes the technology. The technology itself is only an enabler, what changes is the way of thinking. So, tell people and talents to always find new ways that can make their business resi lience against the competition,” the minister said in the Event of CEO Gathering 2018: 15 Years of PFI Building CompetitivenessAnticipating Disruptive Innovation in Industrial Development at Balai Kartini Jakarta on Thursday (1/11). According to Rudiantara, there are several technologies that can be used as an enabler such as advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things,

cloud computing, big data analytics, 3D printing, and digital payment systems. “The year 2030 will become the benchmark, because we will get a demographic bonus. Our economy will 2.5 times the current economy and Indonesia will be the 5th largest economy in the world. The most important thing is how to change our mindset while looking for new processes. All the companies with monopolistic and oligopolistic styles will be disrupted by the way of thinking,” he added. Minister Rudiantara also said that currently there is a shift in the Indonesian economy. “Our economy shifted to services, while the behaviors of our young people are changing too. Now the young people rarely buy new clothes, they prefer leisure like watching movies and traveling.” (TPP)

KOWAS 2018 Anniversary, Panel Discussion and Jack Ma’s Wisdoms dra Gunawan, Commissioner of Gramedia Group. In his speech, Chairman of KOWAS Mr. Indra Gunawan explained about the uniqueness of Jack Ma who has not been widely known yet. He likes to practice meditation/yoga with the position of inversion/sirsasana. Maybe because Jack Ma gets used to look the world from different angle than most people. That’s why his thinking is often out of the box. Dr. Boenjamin Setiawan, in his presentation said in principle he agreed with what became Jack Ma’s inspirational values. He did not agree only in one thing that when getting old, people must stop working and start to have fun. For Dr. Boen, working is a pleasure. Dr. AB Soesanto highlighted the complexities of manag-

ing a company/organization today. With the development of health technology, the human age becomes longer. Therefore, in a company sometimes there are 4 - 5 gene rations with different traits and thoughts. There are older generation (born before Independence Day), baby boomer generation (1946-1964), gene ration x (1965-1976), generation y (1977-1997) and generation z (1998-2010). Surely, it’s challenging to manage such a company to run fast, efficient and effective in the current era of competition. Closing the panel discussion, Erik Tapan was asked to share his experiences in running his online store. As we all know, one of the starting points of Jack Ma’s company comes from e-commerce or market-

place. His advice to the participants (mostly young people and students) was to act immediately. Without action they will go nowhere. Quoting Jack Ma, he said young age should not be easily to give up, when falling just get up. After the discussion, the participants were welcomed to taste the dishes that can be cooked according to the genes. It’s true, the food ingredients can be adjusted to the genetic condition of each person, so that the body will be healthier and not easy to get sick. During the event, various health checks were given for free, including the examination on body age, skin health, cholesterol and stress level. A big number of participants were going home with a door prize. (TPP)

The university is cooperating with a technology-based education service provider, Ruangguru, for online selection of the scholarship receiver students. The MoU on the cooperation was signed at the President Lounge, Batavia Tower, Jakarta, on Wednesday (1/10) by President University Rector Jony Haryanto and CEO of Ruangguru Adamas Belva, attended by Founder of President University S.D. Darmono, Chairman of the Presidential Foundation Prof.

Budi Susilo Soe pandji and his staff. In this partnership, Ruangguru as a provider of educational services already used by 6 million students in Indonesia will be the exclusive organizer to conduct online test to select the prospective receivers of President University scholarship. The online exam will be used by XII graders to compete for over 150 full scholarships and thousands of partial scholarships. S.D. Darmono in his speech said, “The most important education is practice education, you can study how to swim for 10 years to get Phd degree, but if you never swim then you cannot swim.”

According to him, the development of industrial estates is an answer to make school graduates able to work in industry. “I am very proud Belva studied at SMA (High School) Presiden, the first batch graduate. They (Belva and Isman) are young Indonesian leaders who will change the educational landscape in Indonesia,” S.D. Darmono added. Responding to S.D. Darmono, Belva said, “My 3 years in SMA Presiden and lived in the dormitory had shaped me into like this. I got a full scholarship to stay, eat and uniform for free. After graduating from the school, I got a scholarship to study in Singapore, then worked at Mckinzey and Presidential Work Unit. I just got another dual degree scholarship at Harvard and Stanford and I’m the first Indonesian to get the dual degree. It all only possible thanks to your services, Mr. S.D. Darmono and others.” Belva added, “Now we have 400 employees with offices in Jakarta, Jogja, Medan, Semarang and others. We are partnering with local governments in 32 provinces and 300 cities and regencies. We will coordinate with them how the selection for receivers of scholarship worth Rp66 billion from the President University can be held in every province.” According to him, the online selection opens the opportunity to all students in Indonesia, both in big cities and remote areas to

get into the good and quality university. The online selection provides major studies that can be selected such as accounting, business administration, management, information technology, information systems, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, development techniques, international relations, communication, law and education of primary school aged children. Unair Student Wins Competition of Asean + Unet Logo Design Adi Wisnu Nugroho, a student of Economics and Business (FEB) Faculty, Airlangga University (Unair) Surabaya, must make his campus proud. He has successfully won the competition on designing the logo of ASEAN + 3 University Network (ASEAN + 3 UNet). According to Wisnu, when he was acknowledged that he won the competition, he could not believe it. The competition was held relatively long time ago and Wisnu almost forgot that he parti cipated in the prestigious competition. “At first, I thought I did not win, especially because the time from the opening of the competition to the announcement is too long, from June 2017 to January 2018. I almost forgot it, then suddenly I got the acknowledgement that I won,” said Wisnu on Thursday (1/11). The student, majoring in management, said he participated in the ASEAN + 3 UNet Logo Design Competition was just to fill

the spare time. Wisnu got the info about the competition from Unair account at the social media of Line. “With the help of several friends, I finally sent ten logos to the competition,” said Wisnu. To get ideas for his designs, Wisnu was studying logos that became trendy and widely used by educational institutions. The student of class 2014 then combined the flag colors of three ASEAN + 3 Unet countries, namely China, Japan, and Korea. “I took the colors of country flags, yellow for China, blue for Korea, and red for Japan,” said Wisnu. He added that he never participated in such a competition before. However, he does have design skills he usually uses in the campus activities as an organizer of a member of committee. “I won the prize of US$800 (eight hundred dollars) in cash and a certificate of recognition from ASEAN + 3 Unet,” he said. Entrepreneur University, What is The Measurement? Many higher education institutions in Indonesia claims their institutions as Entrepreneur University. However, if being asked what are the indicators towards the claims, the answer is still vague. One of the most popular indicator used is using the total amount of university graduates that becomes an enterpreneur. But, how many? Referring to some abroad universities, the total amount is quite high. According to Financial Times (2015), there are 46% MBA alumni from Babson College in the United States open their business right after they graduate. The number is increasing three times since 2012 which was only 17%. The same situation is also occur in other higher education institutions. For instance, in Ipade Business School in Mexico City, Mexico, 46% of its graduate build start-up business. It has been increased by 70% compared to 2012 which was only 6%. Or in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business right after graduate, 34% of the alumni (14% in 2012) open their business. Same thing goes with Harvard Business School (28% in 2015 increased by 6% from 2012), Oxford (27% – 5%), and some other universities. In conclusion, average number of alumni who set up their own business since 2012 until 2015 grow more than three times. Is this the indicator of an Entrepreneur University? Or is there any other parame-

ter that can be used to measure how far a university develop its potency to innovate the entrepreneurship? To answer some of the questions, University of Gloucestershire (UoG), England, collaborated with Pre-sident University (PresUniv) to hold a workshop which discuss this matter. The topic is “Growing Indonesia – A Tri a ngular Approach (GITA)”. A Workshop which was held in Celecton Hotel, Cikarang, West Java, on 7 – 12 December 2017, involved by seven higher education institutions from Indonesia and three from Europe. They are; Universitas Padjajaran, Ban dung; Universitas Brawijaya and STIE Malangkucecwara

from Malang, East Java; Universitas Negeri Semarang, Semarang, Central Java; Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Islam Indonesia from Yogyakarta; Dublin Institute of Technology, (Ireland); Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (Germany); The University of Innsbruck (Austria). According to Adhi Setyo Santoso, Director of Setsail Biz Accel, a business incubator under PresUniv, “GITA can be used to maintain the capacity of students, alumni, lecturera, and civitas academica of the university in developing Entrepreneurial University. This is important for higher education institutions and other organizations in order to face the rapid and dis-

ruptive changes.” Meanwhile, Nadine Sulkowski from UoG stated, “In Indonesia with more than 260 million population, as a country with the highest economy growth in Southeast Asia, the support for start-up business is still fragmented. It need a more coordinated approach by involving education sector, government, and Industry to build the capacity of entrepreneurship.” How GITA can accommodate higher education institutions’ effort to be the real Entrepreneur University, not only a baseless claim? SENIOR LIVING D’Khayangan Invites Bonsai Maestro to Teach Bonsai Design Techniques Bonsai is a tree grown in a pot to make it an artistic miniature plant. The Senior Living D’Khayangan held “Sharing Bonsai” event on Thursday (1/18) at the Activity Room D’Khayangan, Jababeka, Cikarang. The event was attended by Rosylawati Dewi, the wife of Chairman of Jababeka S.D. Darmono, along with her friends, while the speaker was Indonesian bonsai maestro Budi Sulistyo. The event began with a presentation about the species of plants can be made as bonsai, such as Ficus virens, Ficus glauca, Pemphis acidula, Casuarina equisetifolia, Triphasia trifolia, Eugenia uniflora, Bucida spinosa, Plectronia horida, Premna, Celtis, Blue bell (desmodium Sp), Bougenvillia, Feronia Lucida, Dombeya rotundifolia, Jacquinea aculeata and others. It was followed by Budi’s explanation about design techniques, including Rain Tree (samanae saman in nature), From Cutting, The Roots, Root Wiring, Root Splitting, The Recovered Root. After the presentation, the author of “Galeri Bonsai” (Bonsai Gallery) showed the audience how to make a bonsai with the available tools and materials, such as a scissor, a wire coil, chopsticks, a pot, fertilizers, and of course the tree to be formed a bonsai. Budi showed some techniques using the wire coil. He shaped up the tree using the wire which according to him was easier to make various beau-

tiful shapes, although it has to be done carefully. “This wire actually makes the tree suffer, but in this case its suffering produces beauty. Like someone who has a plastic surgery would have been initially in pain but ended up beautiful. It needs sacrifice to be beautiful and good looking. That’s the concept of bonsai with this wire,” he said. After he finished working on the stem and wire, Budi proceeded with beautifying the leaves by cutting some twigs. Then using the chopsticks, he punched the soil off to be replaced with new fertilized soil with more nutrients. In the pot, Budi mixed 4 materials of gravels, sand, humus and topsoil with the composition of 1:1. Then he put the tree into the pot and stirred the media with chopsticks so there is no empty space in the pot. The bonsai must be watered sufficiently every day. After watching the demo of how to make a bonsai, the audience were served a lunch, then they went to the Indonesian Arts Exhibition at Jababeka Convention Center where various models of bonsai were on display.
