his Carthage Police Department will make public safety demonstrations available at the Buggy Fesitival through three separate exhibits, including the BAT Mobile, a hot car and the seatbelt convincer.

The Forensic Tests for Alcohol Branch developed and implemented the state’s first Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit Program in 1996. The BAT

Program utilizes six 32’ buses equipped for processing impaired drivers at Driving While Impaired (DWI) Checkpoints. The BAT Mobile Units display logos of “Booze It & Lose It,” “Don’t Drink & Drive” and “0.08 It’s The Law”. The BAT Program in conjunction with law enforcement agencies conducts Driving While Impaired (DWI) Checkpoints across the state. The BAT Mobile Units are used at highway safety/educa-
tional events coordinated by law enforcement and/or local safe community coordinators. Highway safety events reach out to the public to explain the dangers of drinking alcohol and driving.
HOT CAR
The “hot car” demonstrates the extreme temperatures that can be reached in the passenger area of a vehicle. Exterior and interior temperatures are
displayed to promote awareness of the dangers of leaving children or pets inside a vehicle.
THE SEATBELT CONVINCER
This is a demonstration unit that allows participants to experience the intensity of a 8-10 mph front end crash. The seatbelt convincer promotes awareness of the importance of wearing a seatbelt while riding in an automobile.

Tyson and Jones Buggy Company – Historical Perspective
O
n Saturday, May 9th Carthage will play host to a very special occasion: the 27th Annual Buggy Show, where The Gilded Age will once again come to life. Complete with the pageantry and festivities that have defined this time honored event, the community promises another fun filled opportunity to share in the spirit of the day. With its humble origins dating back to 1850, when merchant Thomas Bethune Tyson bought a failing wagon repair shop, it was not until Tyson partnered with Alexander Kelly soon after that the inspiration to build carriages was born. Fine hand craftsmanship earned them a reputation
that spread throughout the region. After the firm , then known as Tyson & Kelly, hired a freed slave named William T. Jones as shop supervisor the business really took off. The son of a slave and the plantation owner who later freed him, Jones moved to Fayetteville, where his work as a carriage painter came to Tyson’s attention. Within two years after a deal was struck, the business grew exponentially under Jones’ tutelage, and would have continued that growth except for the interruption caused by the Civil War. Interned in Fort Delaware as a captured Confederate Colonel, the ever-enterprising Jones horded potato peelings and bread crusts for the moonshine he made and sold to Union

prison guards in exchange for Union dollars. It was this money that Jones used to help re-launch the flagging buggy company with his former boss and soon-to-be partner, Tyson. The story goes that on the first Monday of each month, Jones would string together a line of carriages that he then moved by horse and mule from Carthage to “the great sale day” in Bennettsville, South Carolina. He would go down with buggies and come back carrying cash every time. With a catalog that featured the trend setting vehicles of the day, from the open buggy, top buggy, surrey, cabriolet, phaeton, and Victoria, to many carriage styles, including the tres´ elegant, landau. Drawn
by a pair or four-in-hand, the landau reached its peak appeal in the mid-1800s with the fashionable elite who saw ownership of such a carriage as a sign of having achieved prominent social standing. An “only the best will do” attitude often led these customers to Tyson and Jones, as evidenced by a South American head of state who had them build a glass enclosed, white velvet masterpiece, complete with a white leather harness. By 1873, business had skyrocketed, with orders coming in throughout North and South Carolina, signaling the time for Tyson and Jones to buy out Kelly. men who had a vision that turned a local wagon repair shop into the largest buggy manufacturing operation in the country, the Carthage Buggy Festival has become an institution in its own right. Boasting an annual attendance of over 20,000 people who come to join in the fun, there is something for everyone. Food, crafts and music is to be enjoyed around the town square. And along with events that in-
clude a Run for the Buddies, a presentation of antique cars, the Quicksilver Cloggers, Tony Barnes and Friends, and the crowning of Mr. and Mrs. Buggy Festival, Mr. and Mrs. Tara Plantation, and Mr. and Mrs. Pinelake, there also will be a display of the beautiful buggies and carriages that helped put Carthage on the map for 75 years. Jones now sharing top billing, he went about mechanizing production. Having “seen” the future from business trips in the North, Jones realized that to remain competitive, employing the use of machinery had become a necessity. To that end, he went shopping. Purchasing a steam engine and boiler, circular saws, drills, and a planner, he had everything shipped to Jonesboro, where it was hauled by wagon to Carthage. And the bet paid off. As they continued to expand, the company reach included Georgia, thanks to having their buggies and carriages exhibited in Atlanta at the Cotton States Exposition. They incorporated in 1889 with Jones at the helm as company president of one of the largest factories in the South. Producing 3,000 vehicles a year at the top of their game, Tyson and Jones were now wealthy men. Jones was an African-American, referred to as “a mulatto gentleman” according to census records. Despite the prejudice of the times, he rose to become a leading citizen within the community. A Sunday school teacher at the Methodist Church, a member of local, as well as national boards, and in a very respectable interracial marriage, one testament to Jones’ celebrity can be seen in his 1880s Queen Anne Victorian mansion, which crowns the entrance to the town’s historic district. Adorned with gingerbread trim and a wraparound porch, the house harkens back to a bygone era, and most recently served as a bed and breakfast, aptly named, The Old Buggy Inn. After his death in 1910 the local paper penned Jones as, “a citizen regarded in all respects as probably the peer of any, living or dead, in usefulness in accomplished purpose ... and withal in the example and model which he has left the present and future generations.” Meanwhile, in 1906, Tyson was busy
building a new and larger home consisting of 20 rooms across the street from the factory, in part to accommodate his growing family. Made of white brick with stately Grecian columns gracing the entrance, this is where he finally settled. Tyson lived in the family home with his bride, Miss Fannie Phillips, whom he married in 1889, and with whom he had two children, Claude Phillips and Mary Glenn. He closed the house and moved to the Summit Hotel eight years later, when both his wife and grandfather died. After five years a widower, Tyson again tied the knot in 1901 with Miss Mary Evelyn Burwell, many years his junior at 18 years old. They had four children; Thomas Burwell and Evelyn Randolph, with Robert and Dorothy having been born in their new home. But, back in the day, the “old house”, which claimed indoor plumbing, electric lights and elegant furnishings, along with picturesque formal gardens, it had garnered a reputation for providing a friendly respite thanks to the Tyson’s hospitality. Offered as a retreat for judges and lawyers who often traveled great distances to the county court, “Mr. Tommy” and “Miss Polly” were always ready to extend a warm overnight invitation. Eventually, as time passed, the Tyson and Jones Buggy Company fell on hard times. Due to the ever growing demand for automobiles, the horse and buggy was fast becoming a thing of the past. Shortly after the last shipment was delivered to octogenarian, Neil S. Blue of Raeford, who claimed he would never “operate” a car, the Tyson and Jones Buggy Company closed its doors. The year was 1925. Today there is only one building remaining, fire having claimed the other. Although the company has literally gone up in smoke, its memory endures with the initiation in 1989 of the Carthage Buggy Festival. A celebration to honor the contribution of two

Union Pines Band to Open Buggy Festival
T
he Union Pines High School Band will open festivities at the Carthage Buggy Festival again this year, following the presentation of colors at 9:00 a.m.. The band is something special, a medium sized school band with big school aspirations in terms of skills and presentation. Based on the size of the band, the Union Pines Marching Vikings, under the direction of Rob Hill, competes in the largest competition

divisions, classes 4 and 5A even though the school is classified as a 3A school. This is not typical for high school bands. The band has received many recent awards including straight superior ratings at all competitions and has represented the state of North Carolina at the National Festival of States performance in San Antonio, Texas, a very prestigious honor. They will play the national anthem and several other songs to open the event.
The Dusters Bring Popular Sounds
T
he Dusters will present their acoustic covers of popular songs to the Buggy Festival at 3:00 p.m. Based in Aberdeen, band members Chris Goodwin, Jeremy Campbell and Brian Carter have played together for more than 15 years and perform music that other bands often overlook.
Influenced by rock, funk and soul music from the 1960s to today, The Dusters surprise audiences with their creative song selection and passionate performance. Their favorite audience reaction is when someone says, “They’re playing that?” Be prepared to smile, dance, and enjoy a set with The Dusters.

Martin Luther King Children’s Choir
T
he Moore County chapter of the Martin Luther King, Jr., All-Children’s Choir will help open the festivities on Saturday morning, along with the Union Pines Band. The choir was started about three years ago at John Hall Presbyterian Church and is now comprised of approximately 16 members aged 4-18 years of age from various area churches. The director and founder is Randy Shepard. The choir has traveled extensively to perform. Their major function is to celebrate the memory

of Dr. Martin Luther King in a Raleigh performance each January. A larger MLK children’s choir, based in Raleigh, has upwards of 130 members. The group provides scholarships to local high school seniors interested in black history and holds their annual local celebration at Carthage Elementary School in June. Moonlight Shiners
M
oonlight Shiners will come on stage at 2:00 p.m. to rock the street. The Shiners are an acoustic band from Pinehurst, NC, specializing in Top 40 radio hits, modern country, and even some 90’s rock. Their set will last an hour at the festival. The band was formed several years ago by Jeremy Robinson and Mollie Edwards after they discovered there was a market in
the area for working musicians. The pair brought in several other musicians including drums, a bass player, and harmonica. Each of the new members came from other bands, and all possessed a good amount of talent and knowledge concerning live music and the service industry. Barnes and Friends will Rock the Buggy
ony Barnes is already widely recognized on the local music scene and is steadily becoming a recognized writer and performer throughout the Carolina’s, Tennesee, and the Deep South to Texas. He is the former lead guitar player and co-writer for Nashville-based Southern Rock band, Mckenzies Mill; and a recognized instrumental composer. Barnes and two musician friends will take the stage at the Carthage Buggy Festival at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Barnes is a veteran of the Nashville music scene, where he was influential in writing some of the strongest material for Mckenzies Mill; according to Kent Well’s, Dolly Parton’s veteran guitar player; and the band’s producer. In 2007, Barnes won Broadjam.com’s guitar solo contest in honor of Stevie Ray Vaughan with his original instrumental, “Push & Pull.” He was then invited to bring the band (Mckenzies Mill) to Madison, WI to perform at Muriel Anderson’s “All Star Guitar Night”, at the Barrymore Theater, with the likes of Monte Mont-

gomery and Thom Bresh to name a few. Tony was a solo act at The Isla Grand Beach Resort in South Padre Island, TX a few years ago. While in TX, he befriended; and was offered two gigs on Austin’s famed 6th Street, by internationally touring disc jockey D.J. Silver. DJ Silver
remixed one of the singles off Tony’s latest album. In December 2010, Tony recorded his first solo EP. Songs like “So What I’m Drunk” and “Life” have become regular requests by fans during his musical endeavors over the Southeast in past years.
In the fall of 2012, Barnes’ co-written song, “Dirty Things” won The Bud Light Battle of the Bands contest that sent his counterparts, and performers, McKenzies Mill, to Nassau, Bahamas to open for “Pit Bull” and “All American Rejects.” Barnes is working on a solo album in Nashville, TN with recognized producer Daniel Dennis of Prime Cut Studio. The first single, “A Few Good Friends of Mine” was released online and has already established itself as a radio ready song by earning an 8.0 out of 10 review by the world’s leading independent music social platform, Reverbnation.com. Barnes will also be playing locally at the Jefferson Inn in Southern Pines on May 22, June 10 and June 20th; Vine in the Ash in Pinehurst on July 10; the Magnolia Inn in Pinehurst July 17 and August 28th; and the Bell Tree Tavern in Southern Pines on July 31. South Ridge Bluegrass Paints the Festival Blue
S
outh Ridge Bluegrass is a hard driving band with tight harmony from Moore County. They are a crowd favorite whenever they play. And will take the state at the Buggy Festival at 10:00 a.m. The four friends - Greg Davis on guitar and vocals, Huey Priest on banjo and guitar, Johnie Marion on bass and vocals, and Steve Creed on mandolin and vocals - have played together in various bands for more than 20 years and in their present incarnation for the past five. The band’s sound includes the traditional sounds of Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs, to the modern songs by John Denver, with a mix of original materials. So hold on to your hat and enjoy the ride as they take you from the first generation of bluegrass to the present South Ridge style. Mr. Creed started playing mandolin in the late 1970s after his introducion to bluegrass music, but started playing guitar at age 12. His early influences to the music were Bill Monroe, J.D. Crowe, and Doyle Lawson. In addition to playing mandolin and guitar, Steve

also plays fiddle. Gregg Davis got interested in bluegrass when he heard Doc Watson playing on the “Will the Circle be Unbroken” album. Already a guitarist playing rock music, he became a convert to the “high lonesome sound”. He also plays banjo and mandolin and says his influences are Doc Watson,
Clarence White, and J.D. Crowe. Marion started his musical path at the early age of six. He played clarinet in grammar school and has been playing musical instruments since. He started playing bluegrass during the late 1980s, in both secular and gospel bands. His musical influences are many and include Hank Williams, The Eagles, and Flatt and Scruggs. In addition to playing bass, he plays guitar and mandolinwrote several of the songs included in their shows. Huey Priest began playing guitar and banjo at the age of 15. His early musical influences were Chet Atkins, Earl Scruggs, and Bill Keith among others. He started playing with local bands before finishing high school He is well known throughout the region for his musical ability on banjo and guitar and has won numerous contests. Show Stopping Sheet Metal Turns Hearts

f you’re into old cars and trucks, or just appreciate the beauty of classic auto design, the Buggy Festival will scratch that itch, whether you want to show off your chrome or just look at some. Sponsored by the Sandhills Classic Street Rod Association, the benefit car and truck show regularly attracts sheet metal show stoppers that make you want to get in, turn the key over, let out a big sigh and start cruising (not recommended unless you have permission from the owner). The show is for cars that are 1980 and older, American made models. It will be located just off the courthouse square on Dowd Street. Awards are given for several entry categories, including best of show, best truck, Mopar, Ford, Chevy,
GM or other, and a ladies’ choice prize. For those who don’t win the respective classes, awards will be given to the top 50 finishers in points. There will be a drawing for $500 in cash, with $5 raffle tickets on sale before and during the show. Registration on the day of the show is $20. Quicksilver Cloggers’ Dance Routines Will Liven Up Festival Stage
A
udiences at the Carthage Buggy Festival will find their toes tapping along as a local dance group, the Quicksilver Cloggers perform their lively dance routines during the 27nd annual event. The group takes the stage at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, as part of the festival’s stellar entertainment lineup. Founded in 1996, the Quicksilver Cloggers dance to a variety of musical genres, including bluegrass, country and pop. The group primarily does precision line dancing, where everyone on the team performs the same steps. Dance members include Jennifer Garner, Sarah Daffron, Aileen Garner, Pam Kennedy, Lou Smith, Brenda Ritter and Jane Hanham, Bonnie Hanham, Barbara
Jordan, Janet Wagner and Brad Davis. Davis is “the big guy, we stick him in the middle,” laughs Aileen Davis. Although the group’s home base is Robbins, members come from a number of different parts of the region. Under the direction of Aileen Garner, the Quicksilver Cloggers dance at spring and fall festivals throughout the area, church gatherings and local nursing homes. Daffron is a certified clogging instructor and choreographs the group’s routines.

And, while most of the dancing is for fun and exercise, the group has done some competitive dancing. In fact, the Quicksilver Cloggers com-

pete regularly at the North Carolina State Fair Folk Festival, placing second in the Traditional Line Dance category (ages 26+) in 2009. The group also earned an honorable mention in the Novelty Folk Dance, International Folk Dance, Clogging Routines (ages 26+) category. Judging at the N.C. State Fair’s Folk Festival is based on audience appeal, authenticity, appearance, enthusiasm and competency, so Buggy Festival audiences can expect to enjoy the Quicksilver Cloggers’ award-winning dance performance. The official folk dance of North Carolina, clogging is a distinctive dance style that originated in the Appalachian mountains. Settlers from Northern
and Western Europe brought their respective folk dance traditions to the colonies, which were further shaped by Native American and African-American dance influences. These influences combined and evolved into a percussive “foot-tapping,” high-energy style of dance now known as clogging. In the 1920s, Bascom Lamar Lunsford added team clogging to the competitions held at his annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, helping establish clogging as a significant part of Appalachian cultural heritage. The North Carolina General Assembly adopted clogging as the state’s official folk dance in 2005. The Pilot | Sunday, May 3, 2015

A
perfect spring morning calls for a perfect way to start the day, and for many people that means a little exercise. In the case of May 9th, the perfect venue might well be the Communities in Schools’ fundraiser “Run for the Buddies”, which includes a 1-mile fun run as well as the original 5K race. This marks the third year of the event. The event starts and finished at New Century Middle School, 1577 Union Church Road, in Cameron and follows a scenic rout that includes a gently sloped course along a quiet country road. Registration opens at 7 a.m. at the school. The fun run gets started at 8:00 a.m. with the 5K runners taking off 30 minutes later at 8:30. This is the final featured event in the Sandhills Race Series spring schedule. Bib chip timing is provided by On the Mark Sports. The fee for the race is $15 for the 1-Mile Fun Run and $25 for the 5K race. Moore
County students receive a $5 discount. Race day registrations are $30. Children will be accommodated with a Kiddie Korner, so parents can run without worrying. A variety of activities are planned to entertain the younger set, supervised by adult volunteers. An award ceremony will be held immediately following the race and run, and runners are encouraged to enjoy the Buggy Festival immediately after. obert Lee has been at Tara Plantation for 13 months. He hails from Hoke County and was a professional logger with the Army Corps of Engineer in the Cape Fear region of NC and in South Carolina. Robert loves western movies and country music. He has a son who lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He enjoys being Santa Claus at Tara during Christmas.

hristell Ervin was raised in LakeView, SC. The daughter of sharecropper parents. Christell moved to the Robbins area in the mid 1970’s. In 2011 after having some major medical problems, Christell moved to Pinelake for further rehabilitation and needed medical attention. Christell quickly made friends of other residents and staff members. Today Christell continues to make new friends with all of the newcomers at Pinelake. Christell was so surprised and excited this year to be named, “Valentine’s Queen” and would like to thank everyone for voting for her. Her family would like to thank everyone at The Peak Resources Pinelake Facility for making this a special time for Christell.

erman Dale Brown was born on October 30th, 1932. He is one of six children: Louise Brown
Lisk(deceased), Floyd Arnold Brown (deceased), Iris Brown Strother of Carthage, Joyce Brown Wilson of Carthage and Ralph Overton Brown of Thomasville. Herman served in the US Air Force as a radar operator in Alaska. He has three children, Teresa D’ette Brown (deceased), Michael Dale Brown of Carthage and Thomas Scott Brown who is in California. Herman has three grandchildren. Herman resided in the Brown family home on Fire Tower Road prior moving to Pinelake. He has been at Pinelake since February 2014. Herman is an accomplished musician who plays the guitar. He often looked forward to musical outings at Clyde’s Music Barn on Tuesday nights. Herman loves tractors, especially the Ford 8N. He was a master mechanic who could fix almost anything. He loved to tinker on broken equipment. Herman ALWAYS had a flashlight in his pocket. alf the fun of going to a local festival is checking out the craft vendors’ wares. There’s plenty to look at during the 2015 Buggy Festival. Festival planners expect to have more than 100 vendors in place offering everything from custom-made woodworks to hand made scarves to the South’s oldest winery.
