The Pilot's second annual Best of the Pines is a culmination of work that began several months ago, with the ultimate goal of keeping the public involved all along the way. The process began on June 1 when we started by asking you to suggest categories for Moore County to vote on. From there, we began asking you to tell us who best fit into those categories on July 1, totaling 3,834 nominations. When "Best Of" voting finally opened last month, we expected a strong response but were still knocked over by 9,690 responses and an 86 percent completion rate of the online survey. This, by far, represents the largest response rate in our history of doing this feature, and we thank you for your role in that. We hope you like the final result. And the winners are . . .

Mohs Surgery
Dr. Peter Mattei comes to Moore County as a fellowship trained surgeon specializing in a procedure called Mohs Surgery, a highly effective treatment for certain skin cancers. The Mohs procedure removes tissue one layer at a time so that each layer can be examined to ensure the cancer is eliminated, offering the highest potential for a cure. Dr. Mattei recently joined Pinehurst Surgical after completing a fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology at the Skin Institute of South Florida. He has also attained a Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship through the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons. He completed his dermatology residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and is a board certiied dermatologist. Before coming to Johns Hopkins, he conducted research as a dermatology clinical trials fellow at The Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Mattei is a proud veteran, having served three years on active duty as a light surgeon in the United States Air Force where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He graduated from The College of William and Mary and Drexel University College of Medicine. He is joined by his wife and two children and looks forward to serving the Moore County community.
