The Heart of Movement
HOW NOFAR HAGAG BUILT THE NOFAR METHOD ON INTUITION, PSYCHOLOGY, AND CONNECTION
by CJ Zarb
Step into a Nofar Method class, and you’ll know instantly: this isn’t your average Pilates session There’s no formulaic 10-rep sequence, no set routine repeated class after class Instead, you’ll find something alive a class that pulses with intuition, athleticism, and deep human connection That’s because behind this movement philosophy is Nofar Hagag a teacher, innovator, and founder whose entire method is built not just on what the body can do, but how movement can make you feel
From Psychology to Pilates: A Path Fueled by Curiosity and Compassion
Before she was a movement leader, Nofar was studying psychology and preparing for a career in medicine But what intrigued her most wasn’t just the structure of science it was the unspoken language of people “I’ve always been curious about people,” she says “To feel comfortable teaching, I need to get to know them I sense people I can read their body language, tell if they feel uncomfortable , know how much I can push or adjust them ”
That intuitive sensibility is a defining feature of the Nofar Method, which began with a Classical Pilates foundation but evolved into something far more dynamic “Classical Pilates was the base,” Nofar explains “But it wasn’t enough Joseph Pilates originally created much of his program for dancers a very specific group of people I wanted to make it more accessible, more athletic, more creative I wanted clients from all walks of life to be able to appreciate it ”
A Method Born from Survival, Experimentation, and Feedback
Nofar’s story is one of resilience As a full-time student in New York City, she supported herself by teaching, often offering classes at 6:00 AM after long subway commutes “I was trying to survive,” she recalls “I had to work hard to fill my classes I listened, I remembered people’s names, their injuries, their stories and I made sure every class was worth coming back to ”
Her classes quickly gained traction not because she followed the rules, but because she broke them She created programming that was constantly evolving, shaped by who was in the room “You can’t walk into a class with a plan and just enforce it,” she says “Who is your audience? Every hour is different Everyone is built differently ”
What she built was a system of movement that refused to be boxed in “It’s not classical It’s not bootcamp,” she says “The Nofar Method is based on Classical Pilates principles, but it’s an intuitive, creative, athletic system developed over 10 years shaped by real people and real feedback ”
Ahead of Her Time, and Willing to Pay the Price
Nofar’s intuitive, adaptive style didn’t always fit into the mainstream Pilates mold She was fired from a studio that didn’t accept her approach, even though clients loved it. “Fifteen years ago, no one was doing standing lunges on a box next to the reformer,” she says “I was ahead of my time, and the industry didn’t like it ”
But she kept pushing She made movement social, interactive, and personal bringing in variety, rhythm, and exercises that truly worked for everyone in the room “I had 70-year-olds and new moms in the same hour. People want consistency, but they also need variety I created workouts that were effective and never boring ”
During the pandemic, Nofar pivoted online and taught live mat classes to students all over the world “I hadn’t taught on the mat in years,” she laughs “But I was doing three live classes a day, seven days a week It became international And it reminded me that what people connect with is not just the workout but a personal connection of someone holding them accountable to show up for themselves ”
The Birth of the Studio and the Rise of the Method
After a setback in her medical school career, Nofar made a bold decision to bet on herself. In 2019, with just $5,000 to her name and the unwavering support of her loyal clients, she launched her own method She started small, renting space in a New York City studio where she had been teaching Within six months, she had grown a following of 800 clients and was working 7 days a week, morning and evening
Then the pandemic hit
“For me, the pandemic was a kind of recovery,” she says “I had to shift everything online I was shy, honestly a little embarrassed, but I knew I had to show up for my community ” Nofar began teaching mat classes from home. Without the burden of studio overhead, she managed to save enough to open her own studio
“I was working around the clock and not looking after myself,” she admits. “I cared about how many people I could reach, but was not taking care of myself”
She opened her first studio in Flatiron with 2,000 clients and within a year, that number had grown to 10,000.
Today, her method is housed in three studios Flatiron, Tribeca, and Miami each designed with purpose The layout is intimate No microphones, no long rows of reformers, no separation. Music plays in the background, supporting but never overpowering The machines are arranged to foster connection “It’s about community,” she says “About being seen and belonging ”
Her instructors many of whom were once clients are carefully chosen Not just for their skill, but for their soul
“A great workout is 50% movement, 50% how you make someone feel,” Nofar says “My teachers genuinely care They’ve been coming to the studio for a long time They have passion They treat clients like family ”
What does a typical class look like?
Each session runs for 50 minutes 25 minutes on the Cadillac and 25 minutes on the Reformer It’s a balanced split that allows clients to experience the best of both worlds
“At first, people feel intimidated by the machines” she explains, “but then they love them.”
Transitioning between the two machines keeps the body guessing, the mind engaged, and the results well-rounded “It’s not that one machine is better than the other they’re both essential Together, they create the full Pilates experience ” Clients can expect a full-body workout that flows With over 100 exercises available on each apparatus, there’s always variety some strength work, some cardio, plenty of alignment and stretch “Our teachers can choose any routine from the book,” she says, referring to the manual she’s built for the classes
The sessions aim to feel like a luxury without the luxury price tag “I came from nothing For me, affording private sessions was a dream I want my clients to experience that kind of attention and quality, but in a group setting ”
“I just want them to try all the apparatus and props so they understand what Pilates can offer!” she says
Organising the Body, Building Confidence
More than anything, the Nofar Method is about helping people organise their bodies to feel aligned, balanced, and confident. “Pilates isn’t about losing weight,” she says “It’s about helping people feel confident in their bodies What does your perfect body feel like? What do you want to adjust? That’s what matters ”
The Next Chapter
Empowering Pilates teachers through "The Heart of Nofar Method" Nofar is excited to introduce her newest resource for the Pilates community: an Instagram page called "The Heart of Nofar Method" This new platform offers helpful guidance, inspiration, and encouragement for Pilates instructors at every stage of their journey The mission is to provide guidance that helps teachers grow in their practice, connect more deeply with clients and build a fufilling career She’s clear: it’s not just about the exercises “You have to love people That’s what makes the difference You have to teach from your heart ”
Now with three thriving studios and thousands of loyal clients, Nofar is focused on evolving the method not for trends, but for people “I still change the workout every class I still listen I still care That’s what will never change ”
Nofar’s Words to Pilates Teachers:
“You’re the only one who can keep it interesting You can have the best sequence in the world, but if you don’t care if you don’t see people their experience won’t be meaningful and they won’t come back ”
Nofar Hagag, the visionary founder behind the Nofar Method, is an internationally recognised fitness expert with upscale Pilates studios in New York City and Miami. Originally from Israel, she moved to New York City as a student-athlete, competing in NCAA Division 1 water polo. With an approach shaped by her athletic background, Nofar has redefined Pilates, building a loyal global following and setting a new standard in the industry.
What is the Classical Pilates Method?
WHY CLASSICAL PILATES IS A COMPLETE, INTELLIGENT SYSTEM
by Amy Taylor Alpers
As someone who feels very fortunate to have started my own Pilates journey at the original Pilates studio in New York City –as close to the source as was possible - and who has committed to a deep exploration of Joseph Pilates’ original work for nearly 40 years, this question remains a challenge to answer Is it a collection of interesting, unusual exercises? A group of unique pieces of equipment? Is it simply a philosophical idea? Or more? To me, it is definitely all that and more Much, much more! But how do you describe it?
When the concepts of tensegrity and bio-tensegrity became more widespread, familiar, and understood, (early 2000s) a major light bulb went off for me In nature, the organic integrity of an entity is created by all parts being suspended in a connective force of energy Picture our solar system Is it a random set of rocks haphazardly floating around in space? No, it’s a complete “system” of planets organized around a centre via a suspension force of connectivity. In this way, it becomes a singular whole - separated from other planets, stars, and galaxies by its organic connection and wholeness Remove or change any one part of this perfect design, and all its parts must reflect that change Its integrity is altered You can’t simply remove the earth and have the solar system continue as it once was. It would have to entirely reorganise into a new structure, and it would end up being something else altogether A totally different system Every single atom of it would be affected by this change. It’s a singular, complete, integrated whole, created by the suspension of its parts in a tensile force
His method comprises incredibly unique and specifically designed whole-body movements, and perfectly engineered equipment that, step-by-step, when used correctly and done as he described, produces whole-body health“returns” the body to life.
To me the classical Pilates method is this – a complete, integrated whole – a bio-tensegrity method! It’s an organically evolved, uniquely designed collection of whole-body exercises using specialized equipment, all held together by a powerful organizing force – its philosophy Change any one aspect of this singular entity and you dissipate its integrity and power It was developed over decades of exploration and creativity, by a singular mind, to achieve a particular result – full body health through complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit
The human body itself is a bio-tensegrity structure Joseph Pilates innately understood this truth long before the term was even coined. And he knew deep in his cells that the body’s ideal health existed in the balanced suspension of all its parts integrated within one single entity He then went about developing a systematic approach to enabling this journey back to tensegrity \
A key hallmark of the “classical” Pilates method is the set order in which the exercises are performed. In addition, the exercises are done with a steady rhythm and tempo To keep the sequence at a rhythmical pace requires set transitions to enable smooth, continual flow between the successive movements without losing the beat – or the breath This ensures that your heart rate is raised, deep heat is generated within the entire body, and oxygen is truly pumped through and absorbed by every cell This is the way the method achieves its goal of deep cleaning the body and then rejuvenating it – the “internal shower” Mr Pilates speaks so enthusiastically about in his book “Return to Life. ”
He writes, “The exercises have stirred your sluggish circulation into action and to performing its duty more effectively in the matter of discharging through the bloodstream the accumulation of fatigue-products created by muscular and mental activities. … Soon the entire body is abundantly charged with fresh oxygen ”
What makes the Pilates method so powerful and effective IS its systematic approach perfectly designed to achieve an explicit and unique goal That goal is to steadily and methodically return the body back to the way it is inherently designed The consistent repetition of the form over and over again, is what enables the practitioner to dive deeper into their own personal movement habits to rebuild better ones until they become the body’s deeplywired automatic and natural choice
If poor habits are to be changed it’s essential that the body is not in constant learning mode Constantly experimenting with novel exercises or creative movements prevents the powerful changes Pilates is designed to create If you are always learning something new, your body never gets to fully absorb the correct one. It is only through this process that the human body begins to move with automatic primal choices, just like a wild animal or baby The exercises, the order, the sequences done on the right equipment, at tempo, repeated and repeated and repeated, enable the client to get a much deeper mind/body innate connection and understanding of how to move healthily
Embrace the design of the classical Pilates method. The form’s strict, premeditated, calculated, intentional approach is actually provocative It challenges the practitioner to dive deeper into its meaning and value Its repetitive form can actually wake up the power in you.
As Romana Kryzanowksa, one of Joseph Pilates’ main protégées, often said, “Pilates was a genius of the body!” George Balanchine, himself a genius of movement, agreed wholeheartedly. In fact, he coined the phrase I believe this too I am absolutely not a genius I simply strive to better understand his genius I’ve been working on this since 1987 Are you a genius of the body? If so, great Create your own system and call it by your name. Do not change something you really don’t understand Strive to understand it instead

Preserving Pilates in a Expanding Reformer Landscape
BALANCING TRADITION AND INNOVATION AS REFORMER PILATES EVOLVES AND EXPANDS
by Danica Kalemdaroglu
Pilates is evolving That much is clear The growing popularity of reformer fitness and athletic-based group classes has ushered in a new era of movement culture, one where access, energy, and creativity are at an all-time high. But for those of us who have dedicated our lives to the practice and pedagogy of Pilates, the question arises: how do we preserve the technique, the method, and the deeper purpose of Pilates while allowing space for its growth?
It starts with respect Not only for the tradition, but for the body The Pilates method is a system, a structure, and a lineage of movement that is incredibly intelligent in its design. At its best, it
And that, I believe, is where the opportunity lies
Reformer fitness classes and hybrid formats aren’t inherently a threat to the method. But when technique is consistently bypassed in favor of trends or intensity, we risk disconnecting from what makes the method effective: its ability to promote deep coordination, controlled strength, and long-term movement efficiency.
Preserving technique isn’t about gatekeeping the work or turning our backs on evolution It’s about keeping the conversation rooted in quality. It means knowing the difference between cueing for speed and cueing for sensation Between movement that is impressive, and movement that is intelligent
In The Somaphyx Pilates Method, we approach this as a conversation of inclusion and intention Our method is grounded in traditional principles while being informed by contemporary science and teaching methods We train teachers to adapt without losing structure To remain true to the system while staying responsive to the person in front of them It’s not enough to memorise choreography; we emphasise understanding the why behind each movement and delivering it with clarity and purpose
If we want Pilates to stay Pilates, even in a high-paced group fitness world, we need to keep training teachers who understand the system Not just the moves, but the why We must value mentorship, embodied learning, and the subtle skill of observation Technique can evolve, but it must be passed down with care There is room for reformer fitness and Pilates to coexist There is room for curiosity and structure But we also need a shared thread of integrity that anchors the work in its roots, even as it grows If the next generation of movers only learns the choreography without the context, the method risks dilution But if they learn the context, the why, and the how then we’re not just building stronger bodies We’re building better teachers, smarter practitioners, and a more resilient profession.
This investment in comprehensive instruction also impacts career longevity According to Zippiai, while fitness instructors may change job locations frequently averaging just 1-2 years per position This reflects a broader pattern of turnover in the industry It's worth asking: are these instructors getting the mentorship and education they need to build lasting, meaningful careers? Quick certification programs and surface-level trainings often leave instructors without the depth needed to sustain a long-term path As an industry, we must take shared responsibility Providing better mentorship, richer continuing education, and pathways for growth beyond choreography alone. Programs like The Somaphyx Pilates Method focus not only on comprehensive teacher education but also offer modular equipment training, helping teachers build both broad knowledge and hands-on expertise across the Reformer, Tower, Chair, and more.
At the same time, instructors must take ownership of their professional development by seeking out deeper learning, staying curious, and committing to the full breadth of the work. True career longevity comes from a blend of industry support and individual accountability When we train teachers to truly know the work, we aren't just shaping stronger movers We're building sustainable, meaningful careers.
Yet we cannot ignore the context For too long, the traditional work in Pilates was kept behind closed doors, accessible to only a select few. This exclusivity preserved certain elements of the method but also inadvertently stifled broader understanding and innovation As Pilates expanded into new spaces, it often evolved without consistent guidance, creating gaps between tradition and modern practice.
Now is the time for change We need programs that are dedicated not just to producing instructors, but to developing true teachers Teachers who are equipped to pass on the integrity of the method thoughtfully and skillfully It also requires shedding outdated administrative practices that prioritized protectionism over education True preservation of Pilates won't come from keeping the doors closed; it will come from opening them wider with intention, mentorship, and a commitment to excellence Let's keep the technique in the method, the method in the message, and the message clear: Pilates is for everybody, but not every movement is Pilates
Danica is a Pilates practitioner and movement educator with over 20 years of experience. Her studio, Pilates 804 in Richmond, Virginia is the homebase for Somaphyx® . Danica’s unique teacher training and mentoring programs.
“Innovation isn’t about reinventing Pilates it’s about evolving how it’s experienced.... We stay loyal to the roots, but meet people where they are. ”
“They’re not just workouts they’re experiences built around individual goals, with Pilates at the core, ”
Nobu Pilates: Luxury in Motion
STEP INSIDE THE VISIONARY STUDIO WHERE CLASSICAL PILATES MEETS LUXURY, INNOVATION, AND A TRULY BESPOKE EXPERIENCE
by CJ Zarb
Tucked inside the iconic Nobu Hotel at Portman Square, Nobu Pilates isn’t just another sleek London fitness studio it’s a global statement in movement, luxury, and innovation At the helm of this exclusive concept is Marsha Lindsay, a powerhouse in Pilates whose journey from competitive kickboxing to classical Pilates education has shaped one of the most elevated wellness experiences in the world
A Journey Fuelled by Recovery, Strength, and Purpose
Marsha’s journey didn’t begin with Pilates it began in the ring As a competitive kickboxer, she was no stranger to discipline and physical intensity But after an injury led her to physiotherapy, she was introduced to Pilates as part of her recovery and what started as rehab quickly became a lifelong passion
“I realised how powerful it was in my very first session,” she says “Not just for recovery, but for long-term strength, control, and longevity in movement ”
Marsha’s passion led her to Classical Pilates training with Holly Murray an intensive education that armed her with the tools to work with a wide range of bodies and conditions Over time, she saw a gap in the UK market: a space where authentic, high-calibre Pilates could meet elevated hospitality and service In May 2021, Nobu Pilates was born
Merging Mindful Movement with High-End Hospitality
When Nobu Hotel Portman Square approached Marsha to launch a wellness concept within its luxury ecosystem, she immediately saw the synergy
“Nobu is all about detail, quality, and experience,” she says “That ethos matched my vision perfectly ”
The result? A studio that feels like a sanctuary but performs like a performance lab, with three signature class formats designed to deliver results while honouring Pilates principles
“One thing I noticed early on in my Pilates journey is that Pilates can sometimes be intimidating for newcomers, so my goal was to design exclusive classes that offer something that caters to the individual’s goals, taste, and experience,” said Marsha
Designing
three signature classes: POWER, PRECISION, PURE
Each Nobu Pilates class is tailored to a different fitness personality, experience level, and goal without ever compromising on form or philosophy
POWER is a dynamic, full-body and fast-flow fusion Reformer and Jump board class built for energy, endurance, and choreography-based training
PRECISION channels strength training through higher reps and deep muscle activation, which makes clients feel the ‘burn’ It’s all about sculpting the upper and lower body and is inspired by Marsha’s background in personal training
PURE focuses on the foundations, offering a full-body educational workshop using all Pilates apparatus from Reformer to Tower to Chairs
“They’re not just workouts they’re experiences built around individual goals, with Pilates at the core,” Marsha explains
Luxury in Every Detail
For Marsha, luxury isn't just the setting it’s in the teaching quality and personalised care. “We cap classes at ten people. That’s the maximum number where an instructor can properly monitor, correct, and connect ”
Each session is designed to blend strength, mobility, and education within 50-55 minutes, ensuring both safety and sophistication
Pilates, Reimagined for the Modern World
While Nobu Pilates pays homage to classical technique, Marsha believes in evolving the experience not the essence. “Innovation isn’t about reinventing Pilates it’s about evolving how it’s experienced,” she says “We stay loyal to the roots, but meet people where they are ”
This mindset has made Pilates feel fresh, accessible, and aspirational to an entirely new audience from high-profile clientele to first-time movers alike
“And just as importantly, we’ve elevated the delivery Luxury is about consistency and attention to detail,” Marsha explains “We have a clear vision of the kind of experience we want to create and how every touchpoint, from the teaching to the studio environment, reflects that vision ”
Global Appeal, Local Relevance
With Nobu’s worldwide brand recognition, Marsha has already started seeing the global potential of her concept “Pilates is finally being received as it should be,” she says “What used to be a hard sell is now the go-to for strength, mobility, and posture ”
This May, Nobu Pilates hosted its first-ever international retreat at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay, where guests trained under the sun on a rooftop overlooking Talamanca Bay The retreat was so successful, extra spaces had to be added
What It Takes to Stay Elevated
To maintain the Nobu Pilates standard, Marsha hires only comprehensively trained instructors ideally with classical credentials
“That kind of training demands depth, discipline, and anatomical understanding,” she notes. “It’s not for everyone, but it ensures we never compromise ”
Marsha is also deeply passionate about representation, working to challenge outdated ideas of what Pilates looks like and who it’s for
“For a long time, Pilates wasn’t seen as a ‘real’ workout And even today, we still face challenges like engaging men, or improving inclusivity across the board ”
As a woman of colour leading one of the most high-profile studios in London, Marsha is redefining leadership in wellness.
Advice for the Next Generation
For instructors dreaming of building a premium wellness brand, Marsha has clear advice:
“First, master your craft Invest in comprehensive education and know the ‘why’ behind every movement. From there, define the experience you want to create luxury is consistency and detail at every touchpoint ”
What’s Next for Nobu Pilates?
With global interest growing, Marsha hints at a future where her signature classes expand to more Nobu locations
“The retreat in Ibiza was just the beginning,” she smiles “We’d love to bring Nobu Pilates to more cities around the world ” As for Marsha herself? She’s not slowing down She continues to teach, mentor, and innovate all while building a movement around mindful, elevated living
Marsha Lindsay, is the Founder and Creative Director of Nobu Pilates, recognised for her extensive expertise in the field andacute eye for curating a sophisticated and in-Vogue brand, as well as excelling in business performance. A go to for global talent when in town, and aspirational in her own brand personality with a drive to break the Pilates stereotypes, her reputation has grown in London and beyond as the most credible face in Pilates Find out more @nobupilates

SAMANTHA WOOD
Pilates for Total Hip or Total Knee Arthroplasty
Orthopedic surgeons William Jaffe and Brett Levine, along with RN and Pilates Instructor Beth Kaplanek developed a specific Pilates protocol for patients to follow after total hip (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The authors tout Pilates as an integrative approach for a complete body workout that can be easily modified depending on the individual limitations and surgeonbased restrictions Patients who expressed interest in Pilates were encouraged to start training preoperatively with a certified Pilates instructor, and to begin the postoperative program within 2 weeks of discharge from the hospital They prescribe a specific set of modified Pilates mat exercises for both the THR and TKR patients, which is to be performed a minimum of 3 to 4 times per week for at least one hour
After one year 38 patients (21 THAs and 17 TKAs) who did the prescribed Pilates protocol were followed up with via chart notes and phone calls and reported the following results: 25 were extremely satisfied, 13 were satisfied, and 0 were somewhat satisfied or not satisfied 73% of the women in the study reported continuing with Pilates on a routine basis
In addition, the senior author reports the use of Pilates with his patients for the prior 5 years without a single negative event and a high degree of patient satisfaction both physically and emotionally This is a preliminary report on a small series of patients, and as such did not set out to prove that Pilates is better than traditional therapy; but to offer it as a viable option for rehabilitation after total hip and knee arthroplasty

More Than Movement: Creating confidence within
HEAR HOW MAGHAN FITTLER CREATED A METHOD THAT TRANSFORMS BODIES AND EMPOWERS LIVES WORLDWIDE
by CJ Zarb
When the world came to a sudden halt in early 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, fitness studios everywhere were forced to close their doors overnight For many Pilates instructors, this meant pivoting rapidly to online teaching to maintain connection with their communities For Maghan Fittler, however, it sparked a revolutionary idea that would change not only her business but also how Pilates could be accessed and experienced worldwide
Maghan is the creator of a unique movement approach that blends the best of Classic Pilates with corrective exercise and functional strength training “We’re not just teaching exercises; we’re empowering people to live in a body they love,” she says. This philosophy is the foundation of her digital platform Pilates
Her style is a purposeful fusion designed to prepare the body for the real demands of life “While we deeply respect and honor the foundations of Classic Pilates the precision, the control, the breath we also recognize the incredible advancements in movement science and the evolving needs of modern bodies,” Maghan explains Her programming offers a diverse range of classes from the pure essence of Classic Pilates to contemporary flows, integrated strength challenges, and Barreinspired workouts “Variety is key We want our members to truly find what resonates with their bodies, their goals, and their mood on any given day ”
Maghan’s journey into Pilates was fuelled by a lifelong love of movement Before stepping onto the Pilates mat, she was an
avid soccer player and cheerleader, and later worked as a personal trainer and aerobics instructor But it was Pilates, with its precise attention to body mechanics and movement quality, that captured her curiosity and heart “After gaining my certification in 2010, I wanted to understand the ‘why’ behind the exercises how Pilates could help with injury rehab, pain management, and improving functional movement, ” she recalls
Her professional practice was further shaped by a decade spent co-owning an allied health business specializing in chronic disease and injury rehabilitation with her husband This clinical experience gave her invaluable insight into the therapeutic power of Pilates “Much of my early teaching was clinical Pilates, working with a wide range of patients It instilled in me a deep commitment to addressing movement dysfunction, empowering people to move without pain, and ensuring they truly benefited from every exercise, ” she says. This led to her signature style an intelligent blend of classic Pilates, corrective exercise, and functional strength training, designed to build resilient bodies ready for real life
The pandemic lockdown was a pivotal moment Like many instructors, Maghan initially moved her classes online, offering free live Zoom sessions and pre-recorded workouts to stay connected with her local studio members. “I was truly amazed by the response People from all corners of the globe were dialling in to take a class It was an incredible, unexpected expansion of our community and a testament to the universal appeal of Pilates, ” she says.
Even after lockdown eased and studios reopened, the demand for online classes persisted especially from interstate and international clients who had connected with her teaching remotely This persistent request planted the seed for Pilates Project, an app-based platform that offers anyone, anywhere access to expert-led Reformer and Mat Pilates classes “Pilates Project was born from a desire to break down barriers and make Pilates accessible to all, ” Maghan explains “It aligned perfectly with my belief in empowering individuals through movement ”
Running a digital Pilates business, however, has its challenges. “One of the hardest parts is building and maintaining genuine engagement in a virtual space, ” Maghan says “Replicating the immediate feedback, the energy of a live studio, and hands-on adjustments requires intentional, consistent effort. ” To meet this challenge, Pilates Project places great emphasis on instructor creativity and community “We encourage our world-class team to bring their unique perspectives and passions to their classes, which keeps the programming fresh and meaningful ”
Maghan also stresses that the success of her program comes down to the importance of progressive overload and personalized feedback to ensure members see tangible results “We actively listen to our community’s feedback and data what they enjoy, what they find challenging, and the results they’re seeing It’s a collaborative effort to continually enhance their Pilates journey, ” she says
Looking to the future, Maghan is excited about several groundbreaking initiatives Most recently, she launched Pilates StudioConnect™ , a global partnership with Peak Pilates that combines professional-grade reformers with an intelligent instruction system to turn any space into a 24/7 premium Pilates studio “Imagine a world where a premium Reformer Pilates
session is available anytime without the constraints of studio hours or instructor availability That world is now a reality, ” she says enthusiastically For facility owners, this means transforming underutilized spaces into revenue-generating assets during offpeak hours, all with zero additional instructor costs.
In addition, Pilates Project is developing localized content to better serve its growing global community “We’re exploring ways to tailor content by region, including additional languages, culturally relevant programming, and attire, ” Maghan shares Another exciting project in development is an Instructor Subscription Tier aimed at supporting Pilates teachers’ professional growth and mastery. “We deeply value instructors and want to empower them as much as we empower our members ”
Maghan also sees the role of Pilates evolving dramatically in women’s wellness and strength training over the next few years. “Fitness is no longer just about aesthetics Women are seeking movement practices that build physical strength, reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and foster body awareness, ” she explains Pilates, with its mind-body connection and joint-friendly approach, is uniquely positioned to meet these needs
“The outdated ‘no pain, no gain’ mentality is shifting to a sustainable, balanced approach, ” she says. “Pilates targets stabilizing muscles often neglected in traditional strength training, leading to a more resilient, functional physique ” The accessibility offered by digital platforms like Pilates Project will continue to break down barriers and bring these benefits to women worldwide
For Maghan, Pilates is about much more than physical exercise It’s about creating a global community of empowered individuals who love their bodies and the movement that supports them “Our goal is to invite everyone into this movement family, to find joy, strength, and confidence through Pilates We're not just teaching exercises; we're empowering people to live in a body they love, ” she says
Maghan is an expert Pilates instructor, nutritionist and women's health advocate, igniting transformation from Austin, Texas. Which Pilates Path Is Right for You?
DISCOVER YOUR NEXT MOVE: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO PILATES CAREER PATHWAYS
by Anita Horry
Over the past two decades in the Pilates industry and with over 30 years in finance and business development I’ve mentored hundreds of passionate teachers across the globe Many enter the profession with wide eyes and open hearts, drawn to Pilates for its healing potential, its continuous flow, and its freedom But somewhere along the way, a question often arises:
"What now?"
Becoming a Pilates teacher shouldn’t be your final destination getting your certification should be the start of a path that evolves with you The more you understand the different directions available, the more confidently you can shape a career that fits There are multiple paths you can take, each with unique benefits, challenges, and seasons. This article is your map a comprehensive guide to navigating those paths, understanding the nuances of each, and deciding what suits you best, not just today, but in the long run
The Five Core Career Paths in Pilates
After decades of training, mentoring, and consulting, I’ve identified five common career trajectories They’re not mutually exclusive, and many teachers blend elements from more than one Think of these as archetypes to help you reflect on where you are and where you might like to go.
The Five Core Career Paths in Pilates
1.The Hobbyist
This path is about service, passion, and sharing the method not scaling a business or hitting income goals Hobbyist teachers weave Pilates into their life rather than build their life around it. They may teach a few sessions a week around family, retirement, or another career, and they do it because they believe in the work
Real Life:
Kathryn, one of my mentees, began teaching after retiring from a successful career She didn’t set out to start a business she simply wanted to offer Pilates to seniors in her local gym because she knew how profoundly it had benefited her own health. Now in her 70s, she brings experience, compassion, and wisdom to her sessions and the ripple effect on her community is immeasurable
Several of my students have even begun their teaching journeys in their 70s They chose to become instructors not because they needed a new job, but because they felt a deep pull to share what Pilates had given them. These men and women are living proof that passion has no expiration date and that purpose can be reignited at any age
The Research Says:
Work that’s aligned with intrinsic values like service, autonomy, and purpose tends to produce higher levels of well-being and satisfaction even when financial compensation is modest (Deci & Ryan, 2000)
Common Challenges:
Limited income or career progression by choice
May feel outside the mainstream Pilates “career ladder” Can experience isolation without a professional network or continuing education
The Opportunity:
Hobbyist teachers are often the quiet heart of the profession They bring sincerity, care, and a deep respect for the method into every class. For those who want to stay physically active, mentally engaged, and socially connected, this path can be a beautiful chapter of service and self-expression on their own terms
“I teach because I love it not because I need to.”
Profile
Typically teaches 1–3 classes per week, often in community spaces or gyms
Keeps another source of income (employment, pension, or personal investments)
Motivated by joy, healing, and connection not financial pressure
Often becomes a trusted and beloved presence in their local community
The Five Core Career Paths in Pilates
2. The Studio Employee
For many instructors, especially in the early years, working as p of a studio team offers the perfect balance: a structured sched regular clients, and a supportive environment to grow your teaching skills without the extra pressure of marketing or managing a business
Real Life:
This path is where many instructors find their footing. It offers structure, camaraderie, and a front-row seat to how a studio is For new teachers, it’s a chance to learn from more experienced colleagues, receive regular feedback, and deepen your craft in consistent setting.
One of my clients, Anna, worked at several bustling studios in London and loved the energy of it But after a few years, she began to feel boxed in by her schedule and wanted something that felt more like hers With a background in project managem and social media, she had a solid foundation for business ownership With support and guidance, Anna launched her firs studio and within just six months, was already planning her second Today, she runs two thriving studios in London, blendi her teaching passion with her leadership skills
What the research shows:
In structured employment, you gain predictability and reduce cognitive load But if autonomy and growth aren’t available, lon term engagement may decline (Deci & Ryan, 2000) Common Challenges:
Limited control over class times, studio culture, or pricing Capped income potential especially if paid per class witho benefits
Little say in business decisions or client experience beyond class itself
The Opportunity:
If you value consistency, collaboration, and the art of teaching itself, this can be a deeply rewarding long-term path And if you find yourself craving more freedom, like Anna did, there’s always room to evolve whether that’s through creating workshops, mentoring, or eventually launching something of your own. This path doesn’t have to be a stepping stone For many, it’s the platform from which real growth begins
“I want consistency and connection without the business stress.”
Teaches consistent classes at one or more established studios
Focuses primarily on session delivery and client experience.
Minimal involvement in admin, marketing, or business development
May receive employment perks like holiday pay, sick leave, insurance, or pension contributions (varies by region)
— Payroll and tax contributions are typically handled by the employer, offering simplicity and financial clarity
The Five Core Career Paths in Pilates
3. The Independent Instructor
This path attracts the freedom-seekers the teachers who crave autonomy, creativity, and full ownership of their work. As an independent instructor, you’re not just teaching sessions You’re running the whole show
Real Life:
This was the path I chose early in my Pilates career The freedom was electrifying I could shape my schedule, choose my clients, and evolve my offerings without anyone’s permission But that freedom came with a price. I was doing everything: teaching, invoicing, writing newsletters, responding to messages at all hours I’ve hit burnout three separate times Each time, it was a reminder that autonomy without systems becomes exhaustion And I’m not alone. Research confirms this tradeoff. According to Benz & Frey (2008), self-employed professionals often report a greater sense of purpose and control but also higher levels of stress and isolation, especially when support systems aren’t in place.
Common Challenges:
Every decision from pricing to promotions is yours to make No sick pay, no built-in team, and often no boundary between “work” and “life”
Requires high levels of organisation, emotional resilience, and self-leadership
The Opportunity:
When done intentionally, this path offers unmatched flexibility and alignment You can create niche offerings, build a personal brand, work internationally, or scale into memberships or digital products. But success here depends on more than teaching skills it takes clarity, strategy, and the willingness to build a business as well as a practice
“I want to build my business on my own terms.”
Delivers sessions in flexible formats rented studios, online platforms, or home-based spaces
Sets their own prices, schedule, branding, and scope of practice
Oversees all aspects of the business: client care, communication, marketing, bookings, admin, and financial management Profile
The Five Core Career Paths in Pilates
4. The Studio Owner
This is where teaching meets entrepreneurship As a studio owner, you're no longer just managing clients you're managing a brand, a team, and a space It’s one of the most rewarding, and misunderstood, paths in the Pilates profession
Real Life:
Studio ownership isn’t simply a larger version of teaching it’s a shift into leadership You move from being the product to being the visionary behind the business That means making decisions about marketing, pricing, hiring, systems, and client retention often all in the same day
Top Insight:
If you have a background in business or finance, you’ll have a valuable head start If not, don’t worry but do seek mentorship early Owning a studio requires clear planning, legal awareness, and a willingness to build both structure and support around your vision. Without that, the passion that got you here can quickly be consumed by burnout
Common Challenges:
High overheads and inconsistent cash flow
Staff management and turnover
Balancing leadership with your own teaching time
Maintaining your personal practice and well-being
The Opportunity:
Done well, this path offers tremendous creative freedom, greater income potential, and the chance to build a legacy in your community. But it’s not for everyone and it doesn’t have to be the end goal Studio ownership is a calling, not a requirement
“I want to create something bigger than myself.”
Owns or leases a dedicated physical space.
Employs or contracts other instructors and admin staff
Oversees operations, scheduling, team dynamics, and business strategy
and assessment methods (Knowles, 2015; Dreyfus & Dreyfus, 1986) Having a teaching background can help here
Common Challenges:
Burnout from holding space for large cohorts over long periods Imposter syndrome, especially when first transitioning into this role
Lack of formal training in curriculum development or educational systems
The Opportunity:
This is one of the most impactful roles in the Pilates ecosystem. As a teacher trainer, you influence not just individual clients but entire communities through the teachers you certify When done with clarity, structure, and reverence for the method, it becomes a deeply rewarding and purpose-driven path. A good place to start is by speaking with your own mentor, especially if you trained in a boutique school about whether they offer a teacher training program or can guide you toward the next step
True mastery lies not in doing more, but in honouring the method with grace and integrity.
In memory of Bob Liekens
“I want to pass on the method with integrity.”
Profile
Leads teacher training programs, workshops, or mentorships.
Works with certifying bodies or develops their own curriculum
Designs assessments, supports student development, and contributes to the evolution of the method
TheHybridApproach
Many of the most fulfilled Pilates professionals I know blend roles A teacher trainer might still teach privates A studio employee may run online workshops A hobbyist might eventually launch a small home studio. Your career doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
Real-Life Examples:
Maya is a studio employee who runs online mat and breakfast brunch programs on weekends.
Heide owns a boutique studio and teaches retreats internationally once a year
Daniela teaches part-time while raising a family and mentoring new grads. I am a teacher trainer who still teaches clients two days a week to stay inspired
This isn’t just about what you want it’s also about what you're ready for The questions below are designed to assess both your aspirations and your current level of readiness in key areas like experience, education, teaching scope, and leadership skills.
Step 1: Circle the statement that best describes you in each row
1 Teaching Experience
I’m within my first 2 years of teaching I’ve taught consistently for 3–5 years
2. Certification Scope Mat or Reformer only
3. Business & Admin Skills
I prefer to focus just on teaching
4 Client & Teaching Focus
I enjoy helping general populations feel better
Fully comprehensive, but not yet teaching others
I can handle some business tasks with support
I’ve taught for 6+ years and have mentored or trained others
Fully comprehensive + experience designing or delivering education
I manage scheduling, marketing, and business systems on my own
I work across a range of client types with different needs I specialize in teaching teachers or advanced concepts
5. Leadership & Soft Skills I’m still developing confidence as a communicator I’m a strong communicator and problem solver I guide others and often take on leadership roles
6. Career Aspirations I want a balanced schedule and steady income I want to grow a business or studio
Your Results:
Mostly A: Grounded Practitioner
You may currently thrive in roles like Hobbyist, Studio Employee, or even a supported Independent Instructor. These paths let you build confidence and experience while staying connected to the joy of teaching without the overwhelm Focus on refining your skills and expanding your teaching scope before taking on leadership roles.
Mostly B: Expanding Professional
You’re ready to step into Studio Ownership, Hybrid Business Models, or grow your role as an Independent Instructor. You have solid experience and a broad skill set and you’re at a turning point where you can grow something bigger, but may still benefit from mentorship or collaboration Begin building systems that support you
Mostly C: Legacy Builder
I want to mentor others, train teachers, or leave a legacy
You’re likely well-suited to become an Educator, Teacher Trainer, or Thought Leader in the field With a strong foundation in both technical and soft skills, and a passion for guiding others, you're ready to shape the future of Pilates Your next step may involve formalising a training program, mentoring new teachers, or growing your influence through retreats, education, or curriculum design.
Pro Tip: Your readiness isn’t fixed it evolves If you're a solid B today, you might grow into a C in a year or two with the right support and experience. The point is not to rush, but to align. Choose the path that fits your capacity now and expand into your vision with intention
It’s Not About Doing More It’s About Doing What’s Yours
I’ll leave you with this: You don’t need to teach more hours or get more certifications to move forward. You may just need to realign Often, the most sustainable growth happens not by climbing higher but by shifting sideways into something that truly fits
There’s space in Pilates for every path And there’s power in choosing yours with clarity If you're unsure, stuck, or craving a change you’re not alone Let this article be your starting point. And if you need help building the business side of your dream, I’m always here

Merrithew: Driving Innovation Forward
A YEAR IN AS CEO, JIM HEIDENREICH
SHARES HIS VISION FOR MERRITHEW HONORING TRADITION, DRIVING GLOBAL GROWTH, AND CENTERING INSTRUCTORS
byCJZarb
When Jim Heidenreich took the reins as CEO of Merrithew almost 12 months ago, he wasn’t on the hunt for a new role let alone one outside his long-standing career in sports performance and protective equipment. But the opportunity to lead one of the world’s most recognised names in Pilates sparked something deeper
“I already did Pilates with my wife and actually enjoyed it,” he says. “It spoke to me It’s a category you can be involved in right until older age We’re doing something good ” Now, a year into the role, Heidenreich is guiding the company through a pivotal evolution: balancing Merrithew’s rich legacy with a bold, forwardthinking vision for the future of movement
Honouring the Legacy, Driving Innovation
At the core of Heidenreich’s leadership is a deep respect for Merrithew’s 35-year history and its commitment to quality education and premium equipment, particularly through its flagship brand, STOTT PILATES® But he’s also quick to acknowledge the need for growth and adaptation
Before joining Merrithew, Heidenreich served as CEO of a leading sporting goods company, where he was instrumental in pioneering the development of a concussion-reducing football helmet for the NFL “We initiated it through research and partnerships,” he says. “It was all about innovation with purpose protecting elite athletes on the field ” That same innovation mindset now informs his work at Merrithew, where he sees movement and longevity as the next frontier of performance and wellness.
“We have to stay true to the DNA of the company and honour the legacy,” he says “But we also need to be open to new ideas, evidence-based thinking, and moving forward. When Joseph started, it was about thinking differently, being bold, and carving a new path While we were producing a consistent product, there was an opportunity to experiment and innovate Now, we have the chance to be more inclusive, more engaging to stay true to who we are, but think a little differently and evolve ”
One of the biggest areas of change? Education delivery
“We’re going to invest in new content, modernise our education delivery system, and digitise our materials We’ve got a lot of exciting things in the pipeline from updated course material to new seminars and workshops designed to engage today’s instructors and tomorrow’s students ”
Building the Future—Globally
Growth is not just about content it’s about geography
Heidenreich sees a huge untapped opportunity in the U S market, alongside strong momentum in Southeast Asia and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) regions There’s more opportunity in the US that we need to focus on And with the recent acquisition of UK-based Align-Pilates in November 2024, Merrithew is expanding its product segmentation to meet a wider range of needs
“Align lets us reach a new audience and expands our product offering,” he explains “It brings unique features like a folding reformer and helps us reach a broader audience It allows us to offer more versatile options to meet evolving needs in the performance and fitness space ”
While Merrithew remains synonymous with premium, educationaligned equipment, Align provides flexible solutions that work across a range of training and studio environments “Both brands will remain distinct, but relevant to fitness and Pilates centres in their own way ”
Investing in Instructors
Ask Heidenreich what excites him most, and his answer is immediate: “The opportunity to engage and empower more instructors ”
He’s particularly focused on supporting instructor careers at every stage with professional guidance, career development resources, and new positions at Merrithew dedicated solely to student and instructor support
“We have to help them along their career give them reasons to stay engaged,” he says “This is a hands-on business And while AI will have a role to play in the future, in-person instruction is not going away any time soon ”
A Destination for the Pilates World
Perhaps one of the most ambitious projects on Merrithew’s horizon is the construction of a multi-million dollar global headquarters and training centre in downtown Toronto, scheduled to open in January 2026
“It will be a world-class centre where instructors from around the world will come to visit and be trained here,” Heidenreich says “It’s a big investment, but it shows our commitment to the long-term future of this industry.”
Vision 2030: Leading the Industry
When asked about his five-year vision, Heidenreich doesn’t hesitate: “We want to remain global leaders in mindful movement We want to be the platform for best-in-class equipment, education, and community engagement I believe we can drive the industry ”
He draws a parallel between Pilates and the path of other enthusiast-led categories that eventually went mainstream “It’s an enthusiast industry that’s finally growing up And that growth is good for everybody more people living healthier lives, more inspiration I think it’s pretty powerful ”
For Heidenreich, it all comes back to the people the passionate instructors, the committed students, and the community that fuels it all “We’ve got a great team We’re transforming lives through mindful movement, and we take that seriously It’s a responsibility and a privilege ”
As the Pilates world continues to expand and evolve, Merrithew, under Heidenreich’s leadership, is positioning itself not just as a player but as the platform that moves the entire industry forward.
Jim Heidenreich is the CEO of Merrithew®, a global leader in mindful movement and Pilates education. With over 30 years of executive experience in consumer, health, and wellness sectors, he is steering the company toward innovation, global expansion, and instructor-centered growth
The Power of Being Fully Certified
WE SPEAK WITH CLUB PILATES ABOUT WHY YOU WANT TO BE A FULLY CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR
by CJ Zarb
When Vanessa Huffman joined Club Pilates, there were just eight studios in the U S Now, with over 3,000 locations sold worldwide, Club Pilates is the largest Pilates franchise on the planet and if you haven’t noticed it’s already making waves in Australia.
At the heart of this global success isn’t just a booming business model, but a deep belief in education And no one champions that more passionately than Vanessa, who used to run the Global Pilates Education Program and now heads up Club Pilates Education across Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii
“The people that are a part of the team are the key!” Vanessa says “As cliché as it may sound, without passionate Pilates instructors, the educational growth would not have been possible ”
A Mega Brand Built on Purpose
Unlike many fitness fads or quick-growth franchises, Club Pilates has scaled with intention. Their approach is grounded in a simple yet powerful ethos: elevate the quality of instruction and the client experience follows
“Since the inception of our education program, Club Pilates has held the hiring of instructors to the highest level of standards,” Vanessa explains “We offer multi-level classes that usher members through their Pilates journey, and it’s imperative that the instructors are comprehensively trained so they understand the purpose and use of all the equipment including adjustments for all types of 'learning bodies '”
That emphasis on comprehensive certification training instructors across the entire Pilates system, not just mat and reformer is something Club Pilates isn’t willing to compromise on
In a market where fast-tracked mat and reformer courses are increasingly common, Vanessa is clear: “Mat and Reformer simply aren’t enough to complete the experience This is my favorite Pilates ‘five-course meal’ conversation it would be a shame to stop at the appetiser and first course.”
The Five Pieces of the Full Pilates Picture
So, what makes comprehensive training so important? Vanessa breaks it down with five compelling reasons every instructor should go beyond mat and reformer:
1. Springboard –“It’s a versatile, inexpensive addition that brings balance, stability and strength challenges to your sessions in a new way ”
2 Wunda/EXO Chair – “Small in size but massive in potential. You can support clients needing seated work or challenge them in standing positions ”
3 Ladder Barrel & Spine Corrector – “These tools teach support, resistance and more personalized variations You start to really understand the ‘why’ behind the moves ”
4 Cadillac – “It’s the original full package of Pilates You’re blending Mat, Springboard, Reformer, and suspension work all in one.”
5 Special Populations & Modifications – “This is the cherry on top It gives instructors the confidence to adapt for any client and ensure they feel safe and successful ”
Being comprehensively trained provides you with many more options and variety This creates more opportunities to teach and develop a lifelong career in Pilates You’ll have an open-ended catalog of moves that deliver the most efficient variations of exercises for all types of clients
Why It Matters More Than Ever
Vanessa has seen firsthand what happens when instructors are fully equipped not just with choreography or class plans but with real knowledge of movement
“All clients have a stopping or learning point,” she says “Comprehensive education teaches you how to distinguish which variations on each apparatus will help a client become successful It gives you the tools to decide which piece of equipment will be best for them
And in an increasingly saturated industry, the difference is starting to show
“Clients are becoming more aware of the differences between a good instructor and a great instructor,”
Although they may not understand the full nuances of the method, they know when a class feels safe, effective and rewarding That’s what comprehensive training delivers ”
From Client to Educator
The Club Pilates training program has taken over 22,000 people through comprehensive certification so far, with participants from all walks of life
“Some people enrol to deepen their own practice maybe they’re planning to install equipment at home, or they just want to get more out of class,” Vanessa explains “Others come in ready to become instructors Either way, the instudio format of our training helps both groups reach their goals ”
That real-world learning environment is a key advantage, particularly in preparing instructors to teach in group settings
“Our training is hosted in a working studio where students teach and learn from each other The participants could work with up to 23 of their peers as they go through their education Each of the peers are “practice clients” as they learn to feel and teach the moves in person They observe, self-practice and assist in live classes with up to 12 clients per hour,” Vanessa says “That’s a huge advantage in learning how to manage diverse bodies and needs.”
The next chapter
As the brand sets up for major growth across Australia and New Zealand, Vanessa is energised by the potential to bring this education model to a new audience “I’m most excited about creating a sustainable platform for better living through Pilates,” she says. “It’s an honor to witness teacher training students transform into movement educators My hope is that this continues to evolve worldwide so more people can feel how doing Pilates can help them do life ”
Club Pilates isn’t just expanding its brand in Australia It’s continuing a global movement one that starts with education, thrives on passion, and is built to last

Why Pilates Matwork Should Never Be Left Behind
WE ASK BASI TEACHER THOMAS KENDALL WHY MAT AND REFORMER PILATES COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER TO BUILD A DEEPER, STRONGER PRACTICE
by Thomas Kendall
Thomas, what inspired you to explore the relationship between matwork and Reformer-based Pilates in your own teaching practice?
I’ve been teaching Pilates since 2017 and have always worked comprehensively with the full Pilates repertoire, matwork as well as apparatus-based training At my studio, Studio Mōtus in Zürich, Switzerland, we offer both Pilates mat classes and small group Reformer classes
The Reformer is a wonderful piece of apparatus It’s dynamic, versatile, and offers both resistance and support, making it an incredibly effective and enjoyable way to train But over time, I’ve seen how essential it is to move fluidly between mat and Reformer they truly complement each other Clients who train consistently on both develop a deeper understanding of the method and show more control, strength, and body awareness In contrast, I’ve seen clients who train exclusively on one format, either only mat or only Reformer, and struggle when they transition to the other It’s like speaking two dialects of the same language: related, but different enough to require adaptation
If I could, I would love to offer small group classes using the full range of apparatus, because I believe in the power of working across all formats But within our current studio setup, offering both mat and Reformer classes provides clients with two strong, complementary approaches
Coming from a professional dance background, this made intuitive sense to me. Just as a dancer benefits from studying both classical ballet and contemporary styles, a Pilates practitioner gains versatility and depth by exploring the method through multiple formats It enhances coordination, adaptability, and ultimately, mastery of the method.
That said, I always encourage clients to choose what suits them best Not everyone needs or wants a comprehensive approach, and that’s okay. What matters most is that they’re moving with intention and practicing Pilates in a way that supports their body and goals, while still having fun!
With the Reformer gaining so much popularity, do you think matwork is being overlooked in many group classes?
There’s definitely a surge in popularity around Reformer group classes right now, and I think it’s fantastic to see Pilates gaining global momentum Training on the Reformer offers a unique experience; just the sensation of the carriage gliding during footwork feels amazing. It’s engaging, dynamic, and often feels more novel to clients, especially those new to Pilates
That said, my concern is that matwork is increasingly being overlooked, even though it’s the foundation of the Pilates method. Mat is where we build the fundamentals: core strength, spinal articulation, precision in movement, all without external assistance When we skip over that, we risk building a practice that looks strong on the surface but may lack depth and control.
At Studio Mōtus, I don’t require clients to take mat classes before joining Reformer because I want people to feel welcomed wherever they’re starting. But I do see the long-term benefit of beginning with mat, or at least integrating it regularly, because it helps clients develop a stronger connection and understanding of their bodies The Reformer can provide support and feedback, but it can also become a bit of a crutch if we never train without it.
Ultimately, I want clients to realize their body is a powerful, intelligent instrument on its own The Reformer enhances that, but it shouldn’t replace it.
How does matwork lay the foundation for good technique and body awareness on the Reformer?
I believe the Pilates matwork lays a crucial foundation by helping clients develop a deeper understanding of their bodies and their capabilities before the added dynamics and feedback of the Reformer come into play. Without springs, straps, or external resistance, you have to rely entirely on your own strength, control, and coordination
Matwork builds core strength through exercises like the abdominal series, and it fosters the kind of body awareness and mind-body connection that makes practicing on the Reformer more effective and safer You learn how to stabilize your pelvis, articulate your spine, and control your breath, all of which are essential when you transition to moving on a gliding carriage under spring tension
Once that foundation is in place, the Reformer becomes a tool to refine and deepen the work Clients are less overwhelmed by the mechanics of the machine and can focus more on improving technique, accessing new movement patterns, and building strength with clarity and precision.
Can you share a few examples where returning to matwork has helped your clients improve their Reformer practice?
I can recall several occasions where a client had been training exclusively on the Reformer and hadn’t yet tried a mat class When I encouraged them to join one, it quickly became clear how different the challenge was. Without the support and feedback of the Reformer, no springs, no straps, no carriage, the matwork revealed gaps in control, core engagement, and body awareness
“Without the support and feedback of the Reformer, no springs, no straps, no carriage, the matwork revealed gaps in control, core engagement, and body awareness. ”
The Reformer can assist or even mask certain weaknesses, especially in exercises that require more stability or spinal articulation For example, a client might perform a beautiful Short Spine on the Reformer but struggle significantly with Roll-Over on the mat That contrast can be very telling, and so useful
What I’ve noticed is that after spending time with the mat repertoire, these clients return to the Reformer with a much stronger foundation Their movements become more intentional, they understand how to generate support from their own body, and the exercises come from a place of real strength and control
For instructors, what are some key mat exercises that translate powerfully to the Reformer? How do you cue or adapt them?
The Hundred is a perfect example of an exercise that translates across both practices Other examples include Long Stretch, Up Stretch, Bridging (or Bottom Lift), and many more! As a side note, I’m using the names from the BASI Pilates program, as I know terminology can vary depending on the style of Pilates you practice or know
I don’t think my cues vary too much between mat and Reformer work, but of course, with the added piece of apparatus, clients need to be even more aware of their setup before the exercise begins, how to execute it correctly, and the importance of safety throughout. Setup is especially crucial on the Reformer, even before any movement happens, because alignment and equipment settings play such a big role in the experience of the exercise
The Reformer can both challenge or assist a client depending on the spring resistance and the exercise For example, if a client struggles with the Hundred on the mat, using the straps or adjusting the springs on the Reformer can provide helpful support and feedback, allowing them to build strength and confidence in the movement
Do you think instructors are using the full potential of incorporating mat-based movement into their Reformer classes?
This is a tricky question to answer as we have many styles of Pilates What I’ve observed is that there are quite a number of new instructors who focus solely on teaching Reformer Of course, with the rise in popularity, many instructors now complete Reformeronly certifications and may not get exposure to the full mat repertoire
That’s not necessarily a bad thing; everyone is looking for something different in their education and teaching practice. Some instructors are teaching in studios where only Reformer is offered, and that’s completely valid
My belief, however, is to start with the foundational exercises and expand from there Getting too fancy in our choreography or feeling nervous that our clients are getting “bored” can sometimes lead to overcomplicated class plans before clients have built a strong base. Repetition isn’t always bad!
Incorporating mat-based movement into Reformer classes can actually enhance a session I usually include at least a couple of mat exercises in my Reformer classes, often at least three or four in the warm-up It’s a great way to connect clients to their center and their breath before layering on more complexity with springs, straps, and movement on the carriage
What advice would you give to newer instructors who may feel more confident on the Reformer but are less familiar with matwork’s role in progression?
I’m going to be honest, matwork is my favorite way to practice Pilates If I had to choose just one way to train, it would be on the mat I feel the most connected to my body, but also more grounded.
I would recommend anyone who hasn’t joined a Pilates mat class to try one The amazing thing about learning the mat repertoire is that once you build a strong practice, you can take it anywhere. All you need is a mat and enough space to move!
If you’re considering becoming a certified instructor but feel hesitant to commit to a full comprehensive program, beginning with a mat certification is a fantastic first step It will build a strong
foundation, not only for your personal practice but also if you continue your education with the apparatus
Ultimately, mat and Reformer-based Pilates are two equally important expressions of the same method Each offers its own set of challenges, insights, and opportunities for growth The mat teaches us to rely on our own body strength and control, while the Reformer introduces resistance, support, and dynamic movement that can increase our understanding of the work When practiced together, they create a more complete, adaptable, and empowering Pilates experience. I truly believe that exploring both allows us, and our clients, to experience the full depth and brilliance of the Pilates method

CREATING A BUSINESS OUTSIDE OF THE RECTANGLE, REFORMER RECTANGLE
by Cassandra O’Grady
After 12 years spent teaching, managing, and immersing herself in the world of Pilates, Cassie O’Grady wasn’t looking to open another studio With a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and over a decade of experience working in studios, Cassie loved movement and the community it fostered but she found herself at a crossroads It was time for more professional freedom, a shift toward something she could truly call her own
The idea for Pilates Fix was born not in a boardroom, but in the daily grind of studio life Cassie saw firsthand how frustrating and time-consuming equipment maintenance could be particularly with Allegro 2 reformers. “It was one of those jobs that to staff members, far too long, and still wasn’t straightforwar Cassie says “It was eating into class prep time, staff ener studio costs and ultimately, the client experience ”
Enter Gary the ever-curious, mechanically-minded neigh who just happened to be in the market for a new job Kno being the guy who can fix anything, Gary also brought de experience working with bearings, springs, and small me components A natural problem-solver, he saw Pilates eq as a welcome challenge
With Cassie’s deep understanding of Pilates equipment, service, and studio operations, and Gary’s technical expe Pilates Fix launched on March 1st, 2025 Initially servicing Sunshine Coast, demand quickly grew, prompting expan Brisbane As word spread and enquiries increased, Pilate responded to another common studio need: reupholstery made perfect sense to add reupholstery to our services results have been fantastic,” says Cassie Launching a ne business is never without its challenges In Cassie’s case Alfred delayed some early plans, but she remained comm doing things right especially when it came to protecting business “It took me three months to find the right insura could’ve gone online and ticked a box, but it wouldn’t ha covered us thoroughly,” she explains
I made sure I secured a tailored policy that included Vica Liability a critical component for anyone servicing Pilate equipment “If you're hiring someone to maintain your ma you should be asking: are they covered to prove damage wasn’t due to their servicing? Pilates Fix is.”
With a unique combination of practical knowledge, high standards, and personal passion, Pilates Fix is setting a new benchmark for Pilates maintenance in South East Queensland and reminding us that sometimes, the best business ideas come from simply solving a problem you know all too well “I’ve been able to combine my strengths, communication, organisation, and industry knowledge with something completely new and rewarding,” Cassie shares “It’s the perfect fit ”
Instructor Spotlight: Sharon Liu
Tell us a little about yourself and your Pilates background?
Hi! My name is Sharon and I'm from Melbourne, Australia I've been in the industry since 2015 and teaching Pilates since 2018 My current role is Head Teacher at Good Times Pilates where I teach two mornings and spend most of my time in collaboration with Cat Webb (Director of Good Times, all-round epic human) and the team to nurture our professional development through workshops, one-on-one training time as well as research and planning
My business, Club Ronny, fuses my love for design, culture and movement I currently host a monthly movement class at North Gallery in Fitzroy for my community and work closely with a select group of long-time private clients I'd like to think that my friends would describe me as warm, kind and brave As a teacher, I believe myself to be detailed, collaborative and candid
How did you discover Pilates?
I discovered Pilates through my Performing Arts training through Patrick Studios in Australia Anyone who's done any kind of professional sport or dancing knows how physically and emotionally demanding it can be I feel really grateful to have continued to fall in love with Pilates it's remained an anchor to support my body and mind through all seasons of life
How do you keep learning? What inspires you in your work? Who/where do you get inspiration from?
I stay actively engaged with my learning by attending workshops, private sessions, and studio classes I’m currently completing further study through Tensegrity Training and plan to create more space for study next year
One of my long-time inspirations is Sara Colquhoun her kindness, knowledge, and skill drew me to her early in my Pilates journey and continue to inspire me I also feel lucky to be surrounded by not only great teachers and people but inspiring women in business.
My programming for clients and my own practice is influenced by contemporary lifestyle and dancing Pilates feels almost synonymous with my ballet training grounded in repetition, centering, and a kind of ‘full-body hum.’
The best advice you were ever given as a teacher…
A summary of the best advice I've been given: your willingness to master movement foundations is the key to a lifelong practice both as a teacher and as a student
Is there something you try and instil in each of your clients?
The feeling of accomplishment, joy and the confidence to take up space
Q.
A.
The best Pilates course you ever did was…
Polestar Pilates mat course with Kimi Broadbent along with Amy Carmody's Yoga training left the most notable impressions on me
Q. A.
Q. A.
What’s your favourite piece of equipment to use with clients in studio and why?
Depends on the client! I mostly work with reformers in group settings so I'll go with that but I find that the deepest connections have happened through mat-based work with rounded and soft props where needed
How do you stay motivated?
It might sound cliché, but I truly love what I do. The variability in my work keeps things feeling fresh whether it’s through my own practice or creating movement experiences for others I’ve learned that I feel most energised when collaborating with my peers and community I know that there's still so much to learn and experience so there's motivation in the joy of that, too
Q. A.
Q. A.
What makes you laugh the most?
I'm an easy target when it comes to sharing a laugh but any kind of pop-culture humour or subtle Pilates cueing double entendres
What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?
Shopping haha and more importantly, quality time offline with friends and family Sharing a meal and/or a quiet moment Teaching involves a lot of talking, so I spend my time off laying low and listening or reading instead of speaking
Q. A.
Q. A.
How many pairs of grip socks do you own? ?
I own at least twenty pairs of grip socks... which is a lot for two feet! A lot of these are gifted (shout out to the lovely Move Active team) I always bring at least one or two spare socks to the studio to share and lend to anyone who may need them
Does your family ‘really know’ what’s involved in your job?
I believe they're understanding my work more now! My parents are Chinese and moved here about 30 years ago So as much as they're well integrated into Australian culture, there are habitual things like Mum referring to a reformer bed as a 'mattress' that have started to shift in recent years I feel really grateful that they've always been my biggest supporters in doing work that feels fulfilling
