News – When you see those huge C-130 Hercules planes lifting off into the sky, headed for a world hot spot, a former Perth resident likely helped get them airborne. Lt. Col. Troy W. Paisley took over control of 436 Transport Squadron at Canadian Forces Base Trenton on Aug. 28 from Lt. Col. M.W. Goulden. Becoming the ninth commander of the unit since it was established in India in 1944. The so-called “Canucks Unlimited” unit began flying C-47 Dakotas, better known commercially as DC-3s, supplying Allied troops in Burma, but now fly gigantic C-130J Hercules troop and equipment transport planes. Though born in Kingston, he moved to the Perth area when he was nine, attending Glen Tay Public School in Tay Valley Township and later Perth and District Collegiate Institute. He’s come a long way from flying rockets in his back yard. “He’s always been interested in flying and building rockets,” said his “proud father,” Roy Paisley, during an interview on Wednesday, Sept. 3, who also served himself, in a uniform of a different sort, as an OPP officer. set off at night, some never to be seen again.” He attended Ryerson University and graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1989. He went on to conduct hypersonic aerodynamics research at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Aerospace Studies for two years. In 1991, he joined what is now the Royal Canadian Air Force. After training, he was posted to 436 Transport Squadron in 1995, where he began flying the Hercules aircraft for NATO and United Nations missions. Paisley now lives in Belleville, with his wife Tracey and their three children: Liam, Owen and Ella. His hobbies include golf, hockey and enjoying the great outdoors. “They stood beside him,” said Roy of his son’s family. “He put a lot of time in.” He has logged more than 5,400 hours flying transport aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force, and flew more than 70 missions in Afghanistan. Paisley even took his father up in the air once for Family Day at the base, and Roy admits that “it’s a big aircraft.” But even with its large size, “it’s probably the smoothest landing and take off” he had ever experienced. “These pilots are good,” he said of the pilots who are now commanded by his son.
