DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The Hon. Justice Janet Lynn O'Brien was sworn in on Thursday, July 4, as the newest member of Lanark County's Ontario Court of Justice. She was sworn in late in the afternoon at the Perth courthouse, in courtroom one, the wooden benches filled with family, friends, lawyers, police officers, and a contingent of judges who filled the jury box. The court heard that she was appointed to the role on May 23, by Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, and that she was appointed to fill the spot left by the retiring Justice Peter Wright. FORMER HOSPITAL CAO MCFARLANE DIES DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com The former president and CEO of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (PSFDH), Bev McFarlane, has died at the age of 58. She died on Thursday, June 27, at home surrounded by her family. "She meant a lot to this hospital," said Dr. Barry Guppy, the current president and CEO of PSFDH. "People are very sad to have heard the news," he stated during a telephone interview from his Smiths Falls office on Wednesday, July 3. Guppy called her "a great leader," and he added that "people recognized her kind approach and her real focus on the patient and family experience," he said.

REMEMBERING BEV In a statement posted on the hospital's website, Donna Howard, the chair of the hospital's board of directors, wrote that "our hearts are with her family, who were with her as she passed. Needless to say, we will all miss her more than words can express, even though her spirit will remain among us." Just two days before her death, her former work colleagues remembered working with McFarlane during the hospital's annual general meeting at the Great War Memorial Hospital site in Perth on Tuesday, June 25. "She left behind a legacy, a culture, embedded in quality care," said Howard. "Her presence is still extremely felt." Also during the meeting, Guppy said that he knew he had "very difficult

shoes to fill," after her departure, saying that McFarlane would be "very difficult for me to emulate." "She led by example and always put the patient first," said Dr. Kate Stolee, the hospital's chief of staff.

PERSONAL DETAILS McFarlane was born on Aug. 22, 1961 in Kingston, Ont., the eldest of three girls. She began her career as a critical care nurse in Huntsville, Ont., later becoming the Chief Nursing Executive at Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare. She later finished a Masters of Arts in Leadership (cum laude), and became the leader of the PSFDH in October of 2014. She enjoyed skiing, windsurfing, hiking, and snowshoeing. She was married to Fraser McFarlane, and was mother to Brittany McFarlane and Scott McFarlane.

Chief Justice Lise Maisonneuve commended Wright for the "pride" in which he carried out his duties, and noted that he would be continuing on as a per diem judge. Hon. Regional Senior Justice Jean Legault, added that Wright would continue to serve "compassionately and respectfully." O'Brien becomes only the second female justice to serve the Perth court. The first was Justice Inger Hansen, who was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 1991, serving in Ottawa, Toronto, and Kitchener, before serving on the criminal bench in Perth until 2003. Maisonneuve told O'Brien that during her time on the bench as a judge, she would be seeing a wide range of cases some brief "and straightforward," while others would be long "and complicated."

That outlook "will be shaped by your conduct." Legault took a lighter tack in welcoming O'Brien to the bench, telling the court that she makes "the best bread pud-

ding this side of the United Kingdom," and that she is a "fan of obscure British TV series." She is also the mother of four children, is devoted to her family, and loves to travel. She warned the lawyers present, both defence and Crown counsels, that Halloween was "a statutory holiday in the O'Brien house," so there may not be sittings on Oct. 31. "I bid you a warm welcome," Legault said. The Hon. Justice James R. Chaffe, president of the Association of Ontario Judges, welcomed her to the club. "We care about each other," he said. "You're becoming part of a wide-ranging circle of friends." He said that he knew that O'Brien would bring honour to her new profession. Crown attorney Julie Scott spoke on behalf of Ontario's attorney general, Doug Downey, and said that "it is with great confidence that this judicial authority is being invested in Justice O'Brien," she said. "Thank

you for accepting the weighty responsibility." She added that she knew O'Brien possessed "integrity and strength of character," she said. Cecil Lyon, who spoke on behalf of Malcolm M. Mercer, treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, said that as a Crown attorney, O'Brien had proven herself to be "an extremely experienced litigator, (and) extremely fairminded." "You are on the front lines of the judicial system," he said. "You are more than up to the task."

NEW E-HEALTH SYSTEM ON WAY FOR PERTH, SMITHS FALLS HOSPITALS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com A new e-health system is on its way to the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (PSFDH). "We want it to be seamless," said Dr. Kate Stolee, chief of staff, during a speech at the hospital's annual general meeting on Tuesday, June 25, at the Great War Memorial Hospital site in Perth. The hospital is working with five other health facilities, like the Kingston General Hospital and the Brockville General Hospital, for the service. "Patients will have their own patient portal," she said. "You'll be able to go in," she said, and see test results, and book followup appointments. The selection of a vendor is the next

step in the process, she said. Instead of a patient having to remember all of their pertinent medical information, history, medications, and so, on, and repeat it each time they meet a new health care professional, under this system, there will be "one patient record, updated in real time." Board chair Donna Howard said that the old system was put in place in the 1990s, and is now "outdated and past its best-before-date." According to the hospital's 2018-2019 annual report, the PSFDH has partnered with the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) to allow KHSC cardiologists "to see all echocardiography images completed at PSFDH and provide recommendations to providers." Further to this,

"auto-faxing of diagnostic imaging reports was implemented to allow for providers to receive reports in real time."

HEART HEALTH Analytics and data is also changing how the PSFDH is dealing with heart attack patients. During a heart attack, every second counts, which is why the hospital is now directing more of those patients to the Ottawa Heart Institute instead of Kingston. "We looked at the weather and traffic patterns," said Stolee, and an ambulance could be in Ottawa 10 to 15 minutes quicker than it could get to Kingston. "That saving of time will improve outcomes," especially when trying to "reestablish blood flow to their heart."

A PATIENT STORY For Perth resident Olwen Romano, the physician shortage is all too real. "I've just had a letter from my doctor of 20 years saying she will be closing her practice in September," he wrote in a June 21 email. He was informed that she had "not been successful in finding a doctor to take over her patients. So we are advised to find a new doctor for future care as soon as possible. Mission impossible." He was told at one clinic that there is a four-year waiting list, and "in the meantime, we will have to visit the emergency department of our local hospital to have our prescriptions filled, as well as for minor health issues. How will this help hospital budgets?" the 88-year-old wrote. In a later email dated June 22, Romano added that "in the 50 plus years I have been in Canada, this is my first experience of this nature and it is certainly extremely stressful. I know we have a great hospital but it is not satisfactory to go to the emergency department and see a different doctor for routine health issues." HOSPITAL RECRUITMENT

Dr. Kate Stolee, the chief of staff at the PSFDH, told the hospital's annual general meeting earlier that very same day that "recruitment is top and centre for everybody," and that physician recruitment efforts continue. "The best way to recruit (is to) have learners come to our hospital," she said, with student doctors from Queen's University, say, to come and "spend a week in the country. We touch them in their first

year of university" and try to leave a good impression. Back at the council meeting, Coun. Dave Bird said that he had reason to be in a local emergency room twice over the past few weeks, and had met some of the young doctors doing their training in the ER. "They said that they wanted to come to an experience like this, and not go (back) to the city," said Bird of the 20-something doctors. Working in a medium-sized, rural hospital, "they get to know their personnel by name." Fenik also noted that physician recruitment has been aided by doctors coming in to fill in for maternity leaves, falling in love with the community, and staying on after their contract is up.

It's officially summer and time to get outside and enjoy the balmy weather after a long winter and what seemed like a non-existent spring. Many families flocked to Leeds, Grenville and Lanark beaches last week during the first heat wave of the summer and they're a great way to cool off. We can all remember eagerly anticipating the last day of school and kicking off the summer with lazy days spent relaxing in the local creek or pond. While there's always a risk of swimming in untreated waters at area beaches, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is looking out for residents. The health unit performs weekly testing of the water at all beaches during the season until Aug. 31 to ensure it's safe for swimming. The beaches being tested this year include Almonte Beach, Dalhousie Lake, Centennial Beach, Riverside Beach, Lanark Beach, Pakenham Beach, Rideau Ferry Yacht Club, Robertson Lake Beach, Smiths Falls (junior and senior), in Lanark County. In Leeds and Grenville, Bellamy Park, Merrickville, Westport Sand Lake, Portland Campbell Street Beach and Foley Mountain Beach will be monitored. The health unit is all about public education to ensure the health of citizens in the tri-counties. Five samples from each beach will be collected each week and analyzed for E. coli bacteria. If they present more than 200 E. coli (the bathing water standard), a warning will be posted. They have committed to posting updates each Friday morning by 9:30 a.m., which are available at healthunit.org. High E. coli levels are normally seen after heavy rains due to surface water run-off or fecal material from birds and wildlife. E. coli has the potential to increase eye, ear, nose and throat infections, as well as stomach bugs. Any beaches presenting high levels of the bacteria will remain on the unsafe for swimming list until the counts have lowered. But the health unit isn't just checking for E. coli. They'll also be conducting tests for any blue-green algae blooms, spills or other safety issues that could impact the health of swimmers at those beaches. When visiting local beaches this summer, you should always evaluate the weather conditions to ensure it's safe to swim. If the water is cloudy, following high winds or a heavy rainfall, avoid it. If there is a lot of bird feces on the beach, there's also a chance that could infiltrate the water. Use common sense and be safe at the beach this summer. And don't forget the sunscreen!

For the next 12 months, I'll be the person you can call for stories happening in the Smiths Falls area. My name is Mallory Day and I'm the new reporter here, replacing Evelyn Harford while she's on maternity leave for the next year. I'm 23 years old and a graduate from the journalism program at Loyalist College in 2017 where I learned several multimedia, broadcasting and social media skills throughout the threeyear program. I grew up in the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands where I cur-

rently live. Some people might remember me as part of the summer street team for Big FM and Fresh Radio in Kingston last summer where I covered several events, including the Taylor Hall Kids For Kids ball hockey tournament where I met the NHL players, Hall and Jordan Eberle. I've been to many different types of events and have covered events from fun runs to car shows and even the Kingston Buskers Rendezvous last July. I'm a big sports fan and have been involved in them since I could walk. I've played a variety of sports such as hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, ringette, and volleyball. I'm also a figure skating coach and have coached in Picton, Gananoque and Kingston since 2014. Dirt track racing at the Brockville Ontario Speedway is probably my favourite way to spend a Saturday night. I've been going there since I was a kid. My dad used to race there until a bad accident

in 2014 ended his racing career. Currently my boyfriend and many of my friends race there. I love writing sports stories, especially when it comes to local, up-andcoming athletes. I enjoy telling people's stories throughout the community I cover. During my time here I'll be covering town council as well as those spicy and juicy stories throughout Smiths Falls and the region, including Perth, Kemptville and all parts in between. My door is always open to suggestions and helpful tips along the way as I complete this new journey with the Smiths Falls newspaper. I look forward to getting to know the community better and being a part of this beautiful town for the next 12 months. MAYOR JOHN FENIK TO GO ON LEAVE FOR JULY FOR 'HEALTH REASONS' DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com Mayor John Fenik has announced that he will be taking a leave of absence for the month of July. Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson will be taking over the role of acting mayor during Fenik's absence. Council will next be back in session in August. According to a press release from Perth town hall, issued on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 5, Fenik said he was stepping aside temporarily "due to health reasons." "As is the tradition, council is not holding meetings in the month of July and so I thought it was wise to take that time to recuperate and expect to be back in August to resume my regular mayoral duties," said Fenik, in a statement in the press release. At the last council meeting on Tuesday, June 25, Fenik had promised to hold a special council meeting to deal with the proposed installation of security cameras at town-owned facilities like Conlon Farm. That meeting was tentatively scheduled for July 16. Fenik last took a leave of absence in the late summer and early fall of 2015 when he ran as the New Democratic Party candidate in that year's federal election, for the riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston.

I have seasonal moods, it seems. In the summer I tend to want to emerge from a cocoon and turn into a beautiful butterfly, or an interesting evolved moth with eye spots to scare away predators. Predictably, a few things happen. First, I long to be transported back to age 17 when summers were carefree and I didn't mind wearing a bathing suit in front of people. I'll have to speak to my metabolism about that. Second, I feel like writing a novel. Still could happen, I suppose. Third, I imagine rising with the sun and changing my whole morning routine to become a better person, which would result in achieving the aforementioned stuff. Let's chat about this part. I am not the best morning person. In the last several years I have mastered the art of waking up early (too early), but usually it is just to lie around worrying about things I cannot control, which is unhelpful. I am groggy. So, I usually start my day quietly on the couch with my cat and a coffee. Sometimes I doze or read the paper or a book. Usually I peruse the interwebs and socials. I used to cajole myself into exercising in the morning, but it always fizzles and is doomed to failure. I actually consider it

to be a success that I have stopped beating myself up over this and now recognize the value of a quiet start to the day. I seem to be better at exercising when I am awake. Ask my senseis at karate. They can likely attest to a few Saturday morning classes when I could have used more coffee. Still, this doesn't stop me from contemplating the type of morning person I would like to be. I would like to wake up feeling rested. I would like to meditate. If I'm not going to do cardio, I would at least like to stretch and do some kata. And write a chapter. And go for a walk and ... and ... and .... See how easy it is to leap into busyness? As we progress through the belt ranks in karate, we have required readings. One is Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams, who trained with martial artist Bruce Lee. It is full of great messages and makes for excellent quiet-morning-on-thecouch reading. I particularly enjoyed the chapter called Know Your Limits, which explored some physical limitations in karate that come with aging. "Instead of trying to do everything well, do those things perfectly of which you are capable," Lee said.

Another chapter talks about the practice of yielding to an oncoming force in a way that it does not harm you, while changing its direction from behind. This is the foundation of aikido, but it is a life hack, really. "What is more malleable is always superior over that which is immovable. This is the principle of controlling things by going along with them, of mastery through adaptation," Lao-Tzu. The book also tells a story about recognizing when there are things you cannot control, and considering a problem with detached calm in order to make a decision. React to facts, not what you imagine will happen. This is tricky for a worrier with an overactive imagination. "Realize that in almost every instance you probably have more alternatives than you think you have. Hold still a moment before acting or reacting and consider the alternatives." Hold still. I want to be that person who rises with the sun and works to better herself. Seems that quiet time on the couch with the cat and the coffee isn't such a bad thing at all.

This Candyman can and did. Sheldon Giff, the owner of The Rideau Candy Shoppe, looks familiar to some faces coming through the door of his store on Foster Street that's because his store used to be located on Russell Street in Smiths Falls. The store has been in operation at 73 Foster St. since mid-March, and he already has plans to hire another employee soon. "Sales have tripled," he said of his move west, though this is in part because the new store is on a main downtown road, while his old store was on a side-street off of Smiths Falls' main drag. "It's been phenomenal." Giff said he knew he was on to a good location during his first Festival of the Maples as a Perth businessperson when he realized "we can't keep up!" And the business has not let up since. "Too many people are coming in at once," he said, during an interview on Wednesday, May 22, as he ran from one counter to another, to fill an order for an old Smiths Falls customer who had dropped by to pick up a gift card Giff was donating to St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. "(But) that's a good problem to have," he added with a laugh, having just wrapped up preparing

fudge and bark as The Perth Courier arrived. He commended the more than 50 downtown and other local business owners who dropped by during his first days of operation this past spring to welcome him and offer their support. "I'm supporting them, they're supporting me," he said. In June, he will be launching new products in time for the summer season, including fruit infused lemonade. He is also selling Kawartha Dairy ice cream, and "we are getting more imports," with more Japanese candy, as well as sweet goods from Germany, South Africa, and The Netherlands. One of the store's biggest sellers are cotton candy burritos - essentially, flattened cotton candy, rolled out like a burrito, where ice cream is added in the middle of the rolled candy. "I haven't abandoned the people of Smiths Falls," he said, as he handed over the gift card. "I still have ties in the town," such as working with the Smiths Falls and District Arts and Culture Council, and being the chair of the Creative Arts Fair, which will be held at the Smiths Falls Community Memorial Centre on Saturday, Aug. 17. And he is due to travel to Windsor, Ont., in late May to attend an international Crime Stoppers convention on behalf of the Smiths Falls and District Crime Stoppers committee.

(It also helps that he is within walking distance of several high schools, elementary schools, and daycares, at his new location.) The demographic of tourists is also eclectic, from Texans to Lithuanians, New Zealanders to South Africans. However, even with a prime location, Giff said that "this is not the store's forever home, but Perth is. Eventually, we will outgrow the place."

PERTH CFUW HONOURS 13 WOMEN WITH EDUCATION AWARDS Thirteen deserving women recently received education awards from the CFUW Perth and District club to help them achieve their post-secondary educational goals. Supporting the education of women and girls is a major goal of the CFUW. The recipients are Kendra Carnrite, Meghan Hubert, Alyssa Jesty, Juliet Kennedy, Bridget Lee, Caitlyn Lesnick, April Martin, Cassandra McGrath, Christina Reid, and McKinley Van Klei. In addition, two 2019 education awards added in celebration of the 100th anniversary of CFUW were presented to Laura Barr and Kaitlyn de Vegt. The award recipients represent many local municipalities, ranging from Almonte to Westport, and from Jasper to McDonalds Corners. The women's educational plans also encompass a wide range of disciplines: biochemistry, biomedical engineering, carpentry, commerce, early childhood education, environmental science, kinetics, law, nursing, office administration and psychology. There is no doubt that these women will achieve their goals, for they have already demonstrated their maturity, intelligence, determination and community spirit. CFUW Perth and District is proud to be able to assist such valuable members of our local communities. This year 40 applications were received, and the volunteers carefully considered each one before narrowing them down to those that could be funded with this year's resources - a difficult process, indeed. The final thirteen women received their awards at a special event held on May 27 at the Perth Legion. Financing for the awards comes primarily from the club's major annual fundraising activity, the Perth Heritage Christmas House Tour. Eight homeowners generously allow visitors to see their special homes, which have each been enhanced by Christmas finery supplied by local florists and designers. Area restaurants and businesses also sponsor homes, purchase advertising or provide gift certificates in support of the tour. When the event takes place in early December, more than 200 volunteers will have worked over the year to make it a success. And at the Perth Royal Canadian Legion these days, there's both. Jim Boldt, the newlyelected president of the legion, during an interview in the lounge on Tuesday, June 25, points out the figure in blue construction paper letters posted on the wall - the $31,583 that the legion was able to donate back to the community in the past year. It's a far cry from where the legion was about two years ago, when it was in "a bad financial situation," he said, calling it a time of "financial despair." The situation got to the point where the Legion Dominion Command appointed three trustees to come in

and run the legion for about six months in 2018. Boldt and others stepped up, and following recent executive elections, "we now have a full slate," said Boldt. "We had 10 people run for five executive positions," the former town councillor said of the contested elections. (The legion is still on the lookout for a sergeant-at-arms and a secretary.)

CATCH THE ACE The financial situation has improved over the past two years to the point that the legion now has $10,000 invested in a GIC, with more than $30,000 in the bank. He encouraged the community to "come into the lounge and get involved. We are open for business and open to the public." A suggestion box has also been set up in the lounge, and "no idea is a bad idea," he insists.

He was an active member of St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church Parish, the bridge clubs in Perth and Smiths Falls and was a former member of the Perth Curling Club. Bert had a 27 year career with the R.C.A.F. before moving to Urban Transportation Development Corporation and retired from Bombardier Inc. in 2003. PIRRO, Filomena (September 19, 1943 - July 3, 2019) Passed peacefully away, Filomena (nee Di Iorio) Pirro, on July 3, 2019; at the age of 75 years. Born and raised in Ielsi, Campobasso, Italy. Immigrated to Canada in 1961 at the age of 19 years. Filomena was the daughter of a tailor and a homemaker. She was the youngest of six children. When she immigrated to Canada she worked as a seamstress in Montreal, QC for many years. She then moved to Victoria BC with her family where she, later worked in the cafeteria at the University of Victoria until her retirement. She then moved to Pitt Meadows, BC to live closer to her son and his family, until recently, when she moved with them to Almonte, Mississippi Mills, ON. Leaving to celebrate her life with loving memories, are her son Salvatore (Natalie Thornhill) Pirro, grandson Gavin (Kyla) Thornhill, brother Ernesto (Angelina) Di Iorio, sister Maria Ciocca, sister-in-law Enza Di Iorio, many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Raffele and Concetta Di Iorio; brothers Carlo Di Iorio, Vincenzo Di Iorio, and Antionio Di Iorio, and brother-in law Francesco Ciocca. A funeral mass was held at Holy Name of Mary Parish (134 Bridge St., Almonte) on Saturday, July 6, at 11:00 a.m., with Father Paul J. Gaudet officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery. We would like to say a huge thank you to Blair and Son Funeral Home for offering the comfort and guidance we required and received while going through our family’s loss - their support and expertise went far above and beyond. GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES OVER $30,000 The third annual Ben Hutton Shootout for Alzheimer's held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Prescott Golf Course raised $30,611 for the Alzheimer Society Lanark Leeds Grenville. Hutton - who is a defenceman for the Vancouver Canucks - has been personally affected by dementia, with both his grandmother and aunt having had the disease. He decided to do something that would help others and with the support of family and friends, he de-

veloped the idea of the golf tournament fundraiser. The initials on the tournament logo are those of his aunt and grandmother. The first year of the tournament raised $15,000 and was held at eQuinelle Golf Club in Kemptville. The second year, bringing the tournament to Hutton's hometown of Prescott saw that jump to $26,000, with this year's amount bringing the three-year total to $71,611. Each year, Hutton invites other NHL players to attend. This year we wel-

comed Brock Boeser and Josh Leivo, who also play for the Vancouver Canucks, and Devon Shore, who has attended all three years and plays for the Anaheim Ducks. This is an extra draw for people to register for the event, which needs no help attracting participants having been sold out a month-and-a-half before the tournament date. All because I couldn't work a yo-yo, Emerson called me a name that sounded like a swear word to me. But it wasn't in the little red dictionary I got for Christmas, so I figured he made it up. He wouldn't let it end there. Oh no! He rhymed off a list of things that were beyond me, and it wasn't long before I took myself to the swing in the grape arbour to think about it.

Emerson said he knew lots of young kids my age who were far smarter than I was, and he also said it was because Father was distantly related to Miss Crosby, my teacher at the Northcote School, that I even passed from Primer book into the next grade. I sat in the swing that morning, pushing the seat back and forth and tried to think of all the things others were good at, and at which I was a total loss. Maybe Emerson was right. Just maybe I wasn't too bright after all. There was Cecil. He could move his ears up and down. One at a time, or both at once. He did this trick of course, when Miss Crosby was working on the blackboard, so couldn't see him. It was all we could do to keep from laughing out loud, as one after another, Cecil's ears moved up and down on his head. How of-

ten I tried to move my ears. Nothing! So that was another thing I couldn't do. I thought of Two Mile Herman who could snap his fingers so loudly you could hear the snap all over the schoolyard. Just about everyone I knew could snap their fingers. Not me! My sister Audrey even tried to teach me, but my fingers simply would not co-operate! And right there in the swing, I tried desperately to get even a little sound, but nothing happened. So there was another thing that seemed to be simple to others, and yet was beyond me! Just about everyone at the Northcote School could whistle through their teeth! Not me! All I could do was blow out spit every time I tried. My three brothers could stand at the top of the hill behind the silo and whistle through their teeth for the

cows down at the Bonnechere. They put two fingers into their mouth, blow, and out would come a shrill whistle that could be heard in the next county. They didn't know hard I tried. I thought it had something to do with their teeth. I was the only one in the family with a gap and I figured that should make it easier to whistle, but it certainly didn't work for me! Even my sister Audrey could manage a faint whistle, not nearly as loud as my brothers, but at least hers could be heard. I tried my best to think of something I could do easily. Certainly I could skip rope. Poor Cora who was round as a barrel couldn't skip rope, but I knew it was because of her size. Well, that was one thing I could do, and I could do it well. Then and there I decided I would put on a demonstration, just to show my hate-

ful brother Emerson how clever I was with a skipping rope! Sadly, I didn't get the chance. Mother called me in off the swing to peel potatoes for supper. I sat at the kitchen table with the newspaper spread out before me and got right down to the job, which certainly wasn't my favourite kitchen chore. Mother was setting the table around me, she stopped to take a look, and patting me on the shoulder, she said, "You know Mary, I think you are the best potato peeler in the whole family." I sat up straighter in the chair and gave considerable thought to asking Mother if she would mind very much repeating that

I just had to figure out a way of letting my brother Emerson know I could do something better than anyone else in the family and I wasn't that hateful word he had called me when I couldn't work the yo-yo.
