Desmond Devoy/Torstar OPP Sgt. Byron Newell hands over a $240 ticket to a boater who did not have enough life jackets on board, during a safety blitz on Lower Rideau Lake on Friday, Aug. 2.

OPP MARINE UNIT GETS TOUGH ON WATER DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@metroland.com "Are you kidding me?" she wanted to know. "It's a very serious offence,"

replied OPP Sgt. Byron Newell, steadying himself on the edge of the OPP marine unit boat in the Lower Rideau Lake near Rideau Ferry, as he extended his hand to give the female boater her

$240 fine. The female boater had been caught on Friday, Aug. 2, heading toward a cottage near the bridge, with only two life jackets for three people on board, in-

cluding herself. But Newell was not done with her. "We have to follow you back," he said. "We want to make sure you get back safely." Up next on the waters was a father pulling two children See MARINE, page 2

THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF PERTH Western Annexed Area of Perth Infrastructure Master Plan Notice of Completion The lands annexed to the Town in 2009 along the western boundary included the Perth Golf Course landholdings and the Tayview property (Sales Barn site) which are proposed to accommodate future residential growth. The Infrastructure Master Plan identifies development constraints and opportunities and provides a functional design solution for transportation, water distribution, wastewater collection and storm drainage to service future Plan of Subdivision development applications under the Planning Act. This Infrastructure Master Plan is being planned as a Schedule B project under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment. The report has identified the preferred solutions for transportation and servicing the residential subdivisions. The Infrastructure Master Plan is available for review at www.perth.ca and at the Municipal Office at 80 Gore Street East, Perth, Ontario, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Interested persons shall provide written comments to the Municipality on the proposal within 30 calendar days from the date of this Notice. Comments should be directed to the Director Development and Protective Services. A person or party may request that the projects identified in The Master Plan require a higher level of assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act, referred to as a Part II Order. The Master Plan itself is not subject to Part II of the Act. along behind his boat on a dinghy - with no spotter checking on them as required by law, for which he received a $305 fine. As he handed over the ticket, Newell recommended the Discover Boating app for his phone, whenever he had questions about the rules of the water. The OPP was out in force, with three vessels cruising the waters of the Lower Rideau as part of the launch of Operation Dry Water, to remind boaters to not only operate water vehicles sober, but to make sure that all of their safety equipment is in order, and on board. There have been 10 fatalities on Ontario's waterways so far this year, with 24 last year, and some boaters are getting the message. Jonathan Hull had life jackets on all of his three children, and one on hand nearby for himself, on his boat. "I've seen lots of close accidents on the water," Hull said, as his children were handed OPP T-shirts for wearing their life jackets. "Today, we were doing a little quick stop. I should

THE ISSUE: INEBRIATED BOATERS LOCAL IMPACT: OPP WILL BE TAKING TO LOCAL WATERWAYS THIS SUMMER TO REMIND BOATERS TO STAY SOBER AND SAFE WITH PROPER EQUIPMENT ON BOARD have had my jacket on." Among the boats stopped this day, there were many who did not have operational flashlights - either because of no batteries, or because they were wet and not operational. OPP Cons. Russ Beaton had already issued one ticket for a boat not having a fire extinguisher. Another hot topic: "Unfortunately, we are still seeing open alcohol," Beaton said. Back on shore, Newell agreed with Beaton that alcohol was still an issue along with marijuana. "We are starting to see more of it," he said, of boaters impaired by mari-

juana. "I wouldn't say its become a real hazard or problem yet, but we definitely have seen an increase." Locally, the main waterways that the OPP will be patrolling will include the Rideau Canal, Otty Lake, and Mississippi Lake. There are 16 marine officers across eastern Ontario. As for the large number of boats lacking proper operating flashlights, Newell said that "it's one of the main safety concerns" on the water. "It seems to be one of the number one things that people tend to neglect. Even though it's just a flashlight, it's still important ... it's not just to see in the dark, it's a visual signalling device," so you can signal to shore or another boat if you break down or are in trouble.

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

OPP Marine Unit was on Lower Rideau Lake Aug. 2 where they laid several charges for boating infractions. Reporter Desmond Devoy went for a ride-along with the officers to discover the rules of the waterways.

HIGH TEMPERATURES SEE PERTH FIREFIGHTERS CALLING FOR BACKUP AT HOUSE FIRE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com Perth firefighters had to work in shifts and call for backup to battle a fire in the heat of Friday, July 26. The Perth Fire Department responded to a call on Treelawn Boulevard, in Perth at around 6 p.m., to a single family bungalow. "One resident is now displaced," said Perth fire Chief Trevor Choffe, during a telephone interview on Tuesday, July 30. The female resident "was able to get out safely," said Choffe, a testament to working fire alarms. A neighbour is helping out the resident, and the Red Cross is also involved providing aid. The fire started in the kitchen area but is still under investigation.

Paramedics were on hand at a major house fire in Lanark Highlands last night (July 29) to keep firefighters safe as they battled a blaze. "We had paramedics on scene to do checkups on everybody," said fire chief Gene Richardson, during a telephone interview on Tuesday, July 30. There were four paramedics, rotating around at different times, to tend to the fire at 761 Sugarbush Way, as the firefighters battled extreme heat. The fire was called in at just after 5 p.m. and some firefighters were

on the scene until midnight. A mutual assist call was put out to BBD & E for a tanker truck, Mississippi Mills for a tanker truck, and Smiths Falls for a van. "They were awesome," said Richardson of the paramedics to looked after his men. "The mutual aid system worked awesome." The investigation is ongoing at the 3,500 square

foot house. The fire was first reported as "fully involved," with several outbuildings nearby. The homeowner was able to escape uninjured, but the house "is a total loss," said Richardson. In a separate development, the fire occurred the same day as the fire service had issued a fire ban. The notice stated that "due to excessive dry conditions, Lanark Highlands Fire Service is placing a township-wide fire ban into effect immediately. No burning of any kind is permitted and fireworks are not permitted during a fire ban." – with files from Ashley Kulp

PERTH CAMPUS INFO EVENING

Call it a prelude to the main event, Rideau Ferry will be home to some of the sleekest antique boats around on Saturday, Aug. 10. As the village gears up for the biennial Rideau Ferry Regatta Aug. 16 and 17, the Township of Drummond North Elmsley will host the Manotick Classic Boat Club's Antique and Classic Boat Show. "There will be some great eye candy," said Scott Cameron of the antique wooden crafts that will line the docks of the township and CC's on the Rideau restaurant in the village. Manotic Classic Boat Club member Don Segall takes his boat Sunny Days out for a run at our regular MCBC Cruise Night on July 30, 2019. Sunny Days is a classic 1966 21' Christ Craft Super Sport runabout powered by a 210hp Chevrolet V-8 engine. Cameron said they will be showcasing the newly

The Ramsey brothers were instrumental to the boat racing scene in the 1950s, and Cameron said they wanted to do something to immortalize these two pioneers of the regatta. The show will feature the boars of Myles Jeffrey, who, according to the website www.jeffreyboats.com (where information was gathered from a book by Don Ferguson, 1992) was born in 1884 near Athens and married a Rideau Lakes Township woman, Olive Chant from Chantry.

Over the years, Jeffrey built boats for 50 years, beginning as an apprentice to Nelson Gilbert of Gilbert Motorboat Co. Ltd. In Brockville. Eventually, he started a boat company in Athens on Henry Street where he built one boat each winter. His last boat was built in 1957/58 before he died at age 74. The names of some of his crafts were quirky - the Nauti-Gal built in 1938; Old Smoothie in 1941, Pardon Me in 1945, and Pardon Me Too, built in 1956. There will be lots to see and do during the day at the docks. Enjoy these classics from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rideau Ferry.

It’s not too late to enrol in classes starting this September.

ETIQUETTE VITAL FOR PUBLIC TRAIL USERS PATH USERS NEED TO BRUSH UP ON PROTOCOL, WRITES JEFF MAGUIRE

insideottawavalley.com

JEFF MAGUIRE Column

In recent years our options for walking have improved significantly, especially in Lanark County. In the United Kingdom, public walking paths have long been a staple for both confirmed hikers and regular or occasional walkers. The Brits are militant when it comes to their public spaces. In our community in recent years an extensive series of trails has been developed. The town is also on the Trans Canada Trail (it was officially renamed 'The Great Trail' in 2016) which is a cross-Canada system of trails, roadways, greenways and waterways. I find that trail etiquette or lack of it, is an ongoing problem. In Europe, the relationship between users is clearly defined and carefully adhered to. Walkers and cyclists in particular respect each other's space. We regularly visit the resort community of Stowe, Vermont. The town has long had a paved 5.3mile recreation path that is maintained year-round that features several bridges over the west branch of the Little River and the mountain scenery along the way is breathtaking. The Stowe recreation path also has an 11-point set of rules users are asked to obey. I believe all similar recreation trails in Canada can learn from their welltuned example.

On our walks in Carleton Place we encounter many users who do not respect others. One of the most annoying issues is cyclists who fail to warn pedestrians of their presence. In turn pedestrians should look over their shoulders and give cyclists a clear path. Groups of walkers should not be spread across the entire pathway. People don't adhere to the usual rules. They ignore signage, cycling or walking straight past stop signs for instance. Besides being dangerous it also shows a distinct lack of courtesy. The rules of the road also apply to cyclists.

I find that trail etiquette or lack of it, is an ongoing problem. The list of path rules in Stowe urges users to obey all signage and asks cyclists to yield for walkers, joggers or children. Bike riders are also required to maintain a safe speed and at intersections they are advised to stop and walk their bicycles across the road. The bottom line comes down to respect. If we all respect one another then everyone will have a better experience using public paths. Jeff Maguire is a career journalist who lives in Carleton Place, Ont. LETTERS & COMMENTARY

PERTH NURSE PRACTITIONER ENCOURAGES YOUNG DOCTOR TO RESEARCH STATS ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Dear Editor: I read with great interest the letter from Dr. Emma Cronk illustrating her point of view on the physician shortage in Perth. It sounds as though Dr. Cronk is a very ambitious athlete and physician. She does seem to understand many of the issues that residents of rural communities face in accessing primary health care services, and perhaps we would be very lucky to have her as a physician here in Perth. I was shocked however when the letter took a turn toward the condemnation of international medical students as though their presence here is the root of our woes with the health care system. The first step was to figure out the facts - how many seats in Canada are actually reserved for international students? A quick search online will tell you the answer is a maximum of 18; three in Montreal, up to five at Queen's, and 10 su-

pernumerary in Toronto. That's out of 2852 seats in Canada, working out to a whopping 0.6 per cent. And if international medical students are paying triple the price, that means they are actually subsidizing the seats of the Canadians in the program. No evidence to be found that they are leaving the country upon graduation though. So then I thought perhaps she was actually referring to the program where Saudi Arabia pays Canada a hefty sum so residents (as in, already doctors) can work and train here, gaining skills while providing us with health care. This is not competition with Canadian medical school seats, and also functions heavily in our favour. After seeing Dr. Cronk's letter shared so widely on social media with little-tono commentary on the misplaced anti-immigration sentiment, I became con-

cerned. I would especially hate for Dr. Cronk's words to be misconstrued as a reason to devalue the excellent care provided by physicians and allied health care providers who are, or appear to be, from a country other than Canada. So, by all means, let's talk about the many challenges of providing excellent health care services in rural communities. Let's talk about the shortage of physicians, nurse practitioners, and other front line health care providers. We can even talk about the validity of the medical school admissions process, and how difficult it is for Canadian physicians who train internationally to repatriate. But let's not vilify the 0.6 per cent of medical students who, just like Dr. Cronk, were willing to cross borders to pursue their passion for medicine.

OPINION

THE ANGST OF NOT RECYCLING WE ALL HAVE A PART IN SAVING THE PLANET, WRITES STEPHANIE GRAY STEPHANIE GRAY Column

My daughter, as you may recall reading about, is a burgeoning environmentalist - I am proud of her. We're still working on reducing the amount of plastic we acquire and, subsequently, have to toss in the trash or recycle (depending on the type). We haven't reached our goal in terms of how much goes out in our yellow bin each

week, but we're slowly getting better. Most weeks. It's hard, though, when our society and lifestyles conspire against us. For instance, when we recently travelled with the Saltos team to Arizona for a gymnastics competition, I warned Girlchild she might have to come to terms with the fact that travel is often environmentally unfriendly. The airplane ride alone is a definite issue. Flying is not environmentally friendly, unless you are a bird or a winged insect. As we contemplated snacks to take in our carryon bags, she was dismayed that we couldn't stash them in reusable containers. My experience has been that they should be in their original packaging. Even then, it's tricky to get

snacks through security. On top of that, a whole pile of stuff has to go into resealable plastic bags a) so that it can be seen in security and/or b) in case it leaks in transit. Plastic bags are one of the banes of our existence. Fortunately, we reused several from the last trip to the competition, which is a start. Probably there are other tips and tricks for this, but I am an infrequent traveller and don't know them yet. Likely the best tip is to not travel, unless you are moving about without the use of fossil fuels, for example by canoe. That is tricky when going to the desert. To make it worse, there was no recycling at the resort - at least none that we could find - even though the city of Phoenix recy-

cles. We've noticed that at some hotels, even at home in Ontario, it's not a sure thing. It seems to vary. It's hard to avoid waste when travelling. It's enough to drive an environmentally-conscious person slightly mad, especially if you are trying to balance affordability on a trip. Getting some groceries so you can eat breakfasts and lunches in your room is bound to generate some unwanted packaging, especially if the grocery store is not within easy walking distance and you can't go often. Recently we were on a family excursion to Ottawa when Girlchild announced that she wanted us to pull over the next time we saw a plastic bag in a ditch or tree so she could retrieve it and

post a photo online with a message about not littering. At the time we were on the four-lane portion of highway close to the city, so we suggested we might avoid risking our lives at that moment and devised an alternative. When we got to our destination at a mall, Girlchild scouted around in the bushes and - eureka - found a discarded plastic water bottle, possibly an even bigger bane of our existence (better to not have them at all, but we will recycle the ones we find)! After a brief photo shoot, the bottle was recycled, some additional trash was picked up and discarded and the message to not litter was posted on the fantabulous Interwebs. Girlchild is definitely

committed to the cause. And the battle continues. Girlchild's determination has further increased my own awareness of waste, not to mention intensifying my alreadyslightly-obsessive recycling efforts (no plastic film in those tissue boxes). I'm trying to buy more carefully, and she's trying to influence her peers and others to take notice. We may not singlehandedly save the planet, but every one of us has a little part to play. Go for it! Stephanie Gray is a word girl, project manager and college teacher who makes up words, has petulant body parts and obsesses about her patio. sjgray@bell.net.

Of the more than 1,046 facilities reporting to the Toxics Reduction Program, 40 per cent intended to implement ways to reduce at least one toxic substance. Their initiative was commended by experts, who are against the program’s cancellations. For the final instalment of A Toxic Decision?, a Torstar Community Brands multi-part web-exclusive series, we set out to discover how these facilities devised their plan and what impacts — if any — implementation had on their operations. This should have been a good news story for industry, but manufacturers representing a variety of sectors across Ontario snubbed repeated requests for comments.

ANDREW MACHAN QUALIFIES FOR 2020 WORLD TRIATHLON LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com On a sweltering July 21 in Toronto, Perth's Andrew Machan was thinking about the task before him. He had one goal in mind qualify for the 2020 World Triathlon Championship in Edmonton. Competing as a 16-yearold in the U19 category, "you know who you're competing against because you have to write your age on your calf," he said. Lots were in "fancy suits with fancy bikes and helmets." Here was Machan, with his father Grant's handme-down bike, in a wet suit he borrowed from Kris Plant and a new Tri-suit he'd just purchased the day before the race.

Brandi Machan photo Andrew Machan, 16, of Perth will compete in the World Triathlon Championships next year in Edmonton after qualifying in the U19 category in Toronto in July. "I noticed a couple cracks in my tire that morning," he said, "so we

had it replaced by a group on-site." Machan is a hard working, tough competitor, "so I just had to get in there and do my best." He has only competed in three sprint triathlons. "I felt great after the race because I knew I had won my age group and the second place person was about three minutes behind me - which was promising." But, he had to wait to get the official word from Triathlon Canada to know if he'd been offered a spot on Team Canada. The letter came 10 days later. "It doesn't seem real yet. I'm new to the sport so it's a bit surreal," he said upon See - page 12

getting that letter. Machan explained that there are only two qualifying events in Ontario. Anyone can enter a qualifying race but to qualify you must be a member of Triathlon Ontario and complete an Expression of Interest prior to the race if you are hoping to get a spot on Team Canada. He gives kudos to the Perth Tri and the organizers (Plant and Shannon Baillon) of this local family-friendly race. "It's a fun event, and the winner gets a pie!" Machan said the Perth Tri is a social event that "definitely inspired" him to try the full sprint triathlon. He said he hopes to be under an hour at the worlds, and if he can do that, he may have a top 10 finish. "My goal is to gain some experience at that level but I always have a goal in mind ... I love to compete,"

he said. "Top 25 would be amazing!" This young man not only has his sights set on a top-25 finish in Edmonton, but he's already looking to Bermuda in 2021. Fundraising? "Mom (Brandi Machan) says I am going to have to do some fundraising to help with he costs of the trip," he said. "There are costs involved in being part of Team Canada as well as the extra costs of travelling with my bike and stuff." Machan enjoys running and swimming and adding the bike element to his list of fun things to do, "just seemed to make sense." "Triathlons can be gruelling, but there is a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the race," he said. Machan is involved in a Kingston running group, the Physi-Kult Juniors. He also has a small fishing boat, "and I love to get out on the lake to fish and swim."

WESTPORT U16 FASTBALL TEAM EARNS PROVINCIAL B TITLE LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com The Westport Storm U16 boys' fastball team travelled to the provincial fastball championships in Palmerston, Ont., July 20-21, to claim the B division title. Westport played in the B division after going 0-2 at the elimination tournament in Grafton two weeks ago. That tournament was also the qualifier and seeding tournament for the Canadian championships,

this year to be held in Saskatchewan, starting July 31. The 19 Ontario teams at the qualifiers played in A and B divisions, and because of Westport's two losses, they were relegated to the B side at the provincials. The five-hour trip to Palmerston (north of Kitchener) didn't deter the squad, who went on to win the B division championship with a convincing 13-2 win over Springbrook. Owen Arseneault and Joe Brownson lead the offence with three hits each. Lane Clark chipped in with two hits and four runs batted in. Brock Seed pitched the win, going seven innings, scattering four hits and giving up the pair of runs. The Storm opened the tournament Friday night against Grafton and came through with a 19-4 win. Reagan Donnelly and Brownson had three hits each and Brock Seed chipped in with a homer and two hits to lead the Storm offence. Pitcher Noah Fleurie helped his cause by driving in four runs and Seed tapped in three runs. Fleurie picked up the win on the mound by throwing three strong innings and striking out six. Seed came in relief for two innings, striking out two. Saturday, the Storm took on a tough team from Tavistock and came through with a hard-fought 4-1 victory. Donnelly and Lark led the offence with two hits each. Clark and Evan Rice had two RBIs each. See - page 15

Fleurie dominated on the mound, going seven strong innings while striking out 11. Sunday morning pitted Westport against Springbrook, who beat Six Nations on Saturday night to set up the showdown to earn a berth to the championship game Sunday afternoon. Once again, Fleurie pitched seven strong innings, striking out seven in a complete game 8-0 shutout. Seed and Brownson had two hits each, while Simpson, Donnelly and Seed had two RBIs each to punch their ticket to the finals. With Springbrook's 5-1 win over Six Nations Sunday afternoon, they earned a berth to the finals and a chance to play the Storm once again in this doubleknockout tournament. Springbrook came out for redemption for the ear-

lier defeat at the hands of the Storm and came away with an 8-4 win, forcing a second game to earn the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Provincial B Division title. Simpson led the offence with two hits, while Fleurie went five innings striking out six in his fourth straight start in what was a dominating pitchers' performance to get to the finals. Seed came in and threw one inning of relief and struck out two, as the Storm went on to defeat their opposition 13-2 for the championship. This is the Storm's first title after a second-place finish and a silver medal at the U-14 championships last year. Manager Mike Seed says the title is bittersweet, but hopefully a building block for the team, which has 11 first-year players who can return next season to perhaps compete for an A division title.

Seed said he is proud of the organization, which started six years ago with one team at the mite division and now has five teams competing in the North Augusta house league, two OASA rep boys' teams and two girls' select teams at the bantam and midget levels. Seed credits great volunteers and coaching that's made the organization so strong - coaches like Pete Kane, Ryan Carty, Ryan Bruyere, Troy Mclean and Jeff Seed, who run their teams at the house league level, which has helped the organization grow at the competitive level of fast-pitch across the province. Seed also praised the management and coaches of the U16 Storm team - Terry McCann, Kurt Clark, Gary Seed and Scott Rice for the leadership and patience they've shown in the development of the team's journey to a provincial title.

The Summer Literacy Program is entering into its 30th year! Established in 1989, the program provides support to local children who struggle with reading and writing. Over the years, this communityfunded program has grown to serve more than 100 children each summer. Join your library as we celebrate with the following events: Run4Reading 5K On Sunday, July 21 at 9 a.m., we'll be running for reading! We're lacing up our runners on Stewart Park Festival weekend to have fun and get fit while also raising money for the Perth and District Union Public Library's Summer Literacy Program. Register for the 5K or Kids' Fun Run and enjoy free breakfast afterwards at the Crystal Palace. The five-kilometre race is $25, fun run is $10. Register at the Running Room (https:// www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=16402). End of Summer Party Join us in the library garden on Thursday, Aug. 22 for our end of summer party! We'll be celebrating all the reading we've done and the fun we've had with games, cake, and more! About the Summer Literacy Program Every spring, the library works with local elementary schools to identify students in junior kindergarten-Grade 3 who would

Erika Heesen photo Literacy Tutor Kara works with a student in the 2018 Summer Literacy Program at the Perth and District Union Library. benefit most from the program. Children are then paired with trained postsecondary students for one-on-one tutoring; students and tutors work together for an hour a day over ten days to improve reading and writing skills. One of the greatest barriers to children learning to read is low confidence. At the Summer Literacy Program, we aim to build confidence and change attitudes toward reading by making learning fun. Research shows that keeping students reading over the

summer months makes a significant difference in terms of maintaining reading levels between school years. This program offers vital support to children who face difficulties with reading and writing and is solely supported by grants and donations. Such community support has been critical in our being able to provide this valuable service to over 1,800 children for the past 29 years. Submitted by the Perth and District Union Library

THE TABLE GROWS GOOD FOOD AND COMMUNITY IN PERTH

THE TABLE PILOTS NEW ONLINE TOOL TO INCREASE ACCESS TO BENEFITS of benefits that clients may be eligible for based on their response to the screening questionnaire. Benefits are grouped into eight categories: health, housing, disability, income, retirement, family, education and transportation. Thanks to a partnership with 211 Ontario, the tool also contains information on the approximately 35,000 local agencies who may provide resources related to applying for benefits. Findings from this pilot, which is also being run at two other community food centres in Ontario, will be shared with partners across the province and will add to the insights and evidence base to support the integration of this tool

within other services and sectors. The Table's peer advocates guide people through an initial screening process with a half-hour consultation in the Advocacy Office at 190 Gore St. E in Perth. Additional support in reviewing and applying for benefits will also be possible. Hours of operation are: Mondays, 2 to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, noon to 3:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 3:30 to 6 p.m.; and Fridays, 2 to 5 p.m. For information, call 613-267-6428, ext. 29, or advocacy@thetablecfc.org. The Table Community Food Centre, with the support of Prosper Canada, and Community Food Centres Canada, began a 12week pilot project July 2 to help low-income community members access government benefits and supports. The focus of the pilot is a new online tool that will help The Table's peer advocates identify government benefits that low-income community members may be eligible for but are not receiving. Originally designed for use by doctors to address the causal links between poverty and poor health, the tool has been reconfigured for use by the social services sector. The tool provides a list

I even learned how to build a scarecrow! Numerous people who volunteer in the garden taught these lessons to me, and every lesson was accompanied by stories and laughter." The garden provides super-fresh and delicious, organically-grown food for The Table's Good Food Bank, Community Meals, kitchen programs, and for the garden volunteers. Due to the rain and cool start to the summer, our gardens have been overflowing with lettuce, spinach, cilantro, green onions, dill and radishes! As the weather gets warmer, The Table's staff and volunteers are looking forward to harvesting cucumber, zucchini, cabbage, peas, carrots, beets and much more. If you have a love for learning, being in community, enjoy the outdoors

At the far end of Perth's Last Duel Park, near the South Street pedestrian entrance, you can find The Table Community Food Centre's community garden. It is a vibrant place where people of all ages and varying gardening experience gather in community to learn, gain experience in planting and harvesting, and build friendships. The experience of The Table's summer gardening assistant, Esther Hardy, is a testament to this. "With every session, I have learned something new and have gained confidence in my gardening skills. In a short four weeks, I have learned how to properly harvest produce, how to compost, the importance of crop rotation and companion planting, how to identify cucumber and squash beetles, and
