News – OPP are on the hunt for the driver of a vehicle who hit a 25-year-old male just before 3 a.m. this past Saturday. The stretch of Gore Street West between D’Arcy and North Streets was closed off from early that morning until after 7 p.m. as police conducted their investigation. The investigation, according to eye witnesses, appeared to centre around 19 Gore St. W., with the sidewalk on that side of the street being cordoned off for many hours, and even the back staircase to the upstairs apartments covered in police tape. As of Monday morning, Aug. 25, a spot of blood was still

visible between a driveway and a parking meter on the road where police centred their investigation. The Lanark County OPP responded to a call of a pedestrian having been struck by a vehicle at 2:50 a.m. on Aug. 23. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing, under the direction of the OPP’s Acting Det. Insp. Dave Robinson, of the criminal investigation branch. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lanark County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

News – Should it come as any surprise that a town that boasts five independent book stores should be home to a disproportionate number of writers? Not really, and that reality was very much in evidence at the inaugural Pertharea writing contest awards, held at the Crystal Palace on Friday, Aug. 22. This was the very first event of the Ottawa International Writers’ Festival – Perth Chapter. For the past several years, the festival’s organizers had been “talking about getting out of the city and doing some rural outreach,” explained board member Lee Ann Eckhardt Smith in welcoming the award winners to the event. But the question then became where in eastern Ontario could such a spin-off event be successfully held? “Let’s do Perth first,” was the unanimous reply from the board. “Yeah, we can do it,” she said. “There is great writing going on here.” Everything just seemed to fit – including having local authors sell their wares at the Perth Farmers’ Market the next morning. “I love the idea of getting locallygrown produce and locally grown writing,” joked Smith. As for the awards themselves, “this is one of the first things

we wanted to do here in Perth. This is (also) a first for the Ottawa International Writers’ Festival. We have never had a writing contest before.” With so much to organize at venues that were new to them, they were able to lean on the talents of the Perth Writers’ Guild to act as judges on the works of fiction and non-fiction, which had to fly in under 1,500 words. “Us writers, we talk in terms of words,” explained Smith, adding that that would be about six pages, double spaced. They were further divided down in to adult and student sections, and they received a surprising 30 entries. In the adult, non fiction category, the winners were: First place: Mary Zintel for “The Grey Ghost.” Second place: Louise McDiarmid for “What Kind of Legacy.” In the adult, fiction category, the winners were: First place: Gena Gibson for “Letters to Cara.” Second place: Joan Sonnenburg for “The Best Is Yet to Be.” In the student, fiction category, the winners were: First place: MacKenzie Green for “Paper, Glass, and Smoke.” See AUTHORS page P12
