Choffe ready for new fire chief role Desmond Devoy
desmond.devoy@metroland.com
Trevor Choffe found out he might be moving up in the world when he was, well, moving up in the world. Choffe was in British Columbia this past July, partly to celebrate his 10th wedding anniversary with his wife Kerri, partly to take part in an Ironman competition. A nine-year volunteer member of the Perth fire department, he had put his name in to replace soon-to-retire fire chief Steve Fournier, before leaving for the west coast. “I didn’t even think I’d
get an interview,” admitted Choffe during a lunchtime interview at the Café Bean at the Old Shoe Factory on Thursday, Aug. 18. “I applied, obviously hopeful to get the position,” but he was realistic. He was up against about 15 applicants from across the country. He was on the bus from Vancouver to Whistler, BC, climbing up the highway through the mountains, to the competition site, when his cell phone rang. It was a 613 area code – and a Perth number at that. He had made the short list. Would he be available soon for an interview?

“I was a little surprised,” he admitted, before saying yes to the interview, upon his arrival. The surprise notice had one positive effect – “it settled the nerves for the Ironman!” He arrived home in Perth around 5 a.m. on the morning of his interview, having flown from Vancouver to Toronto and then onwards to Ottawa. He grabbed a few hours of sleep and then arrived at town hall for his 11 a.m. meeting, his body still on Pacific time. He had thought about appearing in the council chambers in his volunteer firefighter uniform, before deciding to “just go in and be me.” The meeting was “intimidating” at first, sitting in the delegation chair, with Mayor John Fenik. He had to answer 16 questions, and deliver two presentations – a service delivery review, highlighting ways to save money at the department without affecting service, and showcasing an occupational health and safety policy. Amongst the multitude of duties that Choffe will be taking up are some lesser-known duties of the fire chief, like: • Emergency management; • Bylaw control; and, • Crossing guard management. “I grew up here,” said Choffe.
