Perth reservist walks the walk in Holland at world’s largest walking event Desmond Devoy

desmond.devoy@metroland.com

When the Canadian military told Justin Lackey to take a hike, he readily agreed. Billing itself as the largest walking event in the world, with more than 40,000 people taking part in the International Four Day Marches of Nijmegen, in The Netherlands from July 19 to 22, the Perth native was one of an 11-member team sent to represent his reservist unit, the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, where he serves as a corporal. Lackey’s team was part of a larger contingent of more than 170 Canadians who took to the streets of Holland last month. “The march itself is held every year,” he said, dating back to 1909. This is the 100th march, since there were a few years that were missed because of wartime. Canada has sent troops to participate since 1956. More than 5,000 soldiers from 30 other countries send teams to participate. Walkers can trek in different categories, from 30 km to 55 km. The military teams tend to walk 40 km per day, for four days, with a 10-kilo bag on their backs – a weight which does not include their water or food. “Every year, specific (Canadian) units are given a

chance to try out to go,” said Lackey. This is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Cameron Highlanders, so they were given the honour this year of trying out. About 30 of his fellow soldiers began competing to win a spot on the team, conducting more than 880 km of marches over a four-month period. “As they whittled people down, I was selected to be part of the 11-member team,” he said during a telephone interview on Wednesday, July 27, from his Perth home, his children, Hudson, 3, and Edie Mae, 10 months, playing in the background with his wife, high school sweetheart, Heather. “He missed me quite a bit, he said,” Lackey recalled of his son’s reaction to his long journey. This is not Lackey’s first time participating in such an event. He took part in an Ironman event when he was stationed at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa for threeand-a-half-years, but he called his Dutch odyssey “more challenging,” even though it was mostly on paved roads. “It wasn’t much different from here,” he said, though on day four, they did hit hilly terrain. It was about 30 degrees Celsius for the first few days, and in some villages they marched through, they were met with “bands and people out watching you. They’re very supportive of it,” See WALK page P2

Olympic roadshow visits Perth this Sunday Desmond Devoy

desmond.devoy@metroland.com

Two days after the Olympics begin in Rio, you can cheer on Team Canada from much closer to home. The Canadian Tire store at 45 Dufferin St., in Perth, as part of Jumpstart month, will be hosting the Canadian Olympic-themed roadshow party, featuring a visit by Olympic hopefuls, this Sunday, Aug. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The names of the Olympians who will be in attendance are still being firmed up by Canadian Tire’s corpo-

rate head office as this newspaper went to press, but there will be photo opportunities and a chance to meet the athletes. However, the store’s #StandUpStandTall mobile trailer will be on site in the parking lot off of Highway 7. There will also be an on-site raffle for a $250 Canadian Tire gift card, an ice cream truck, kid-friendly entertainment, a balloon artist, and a face painter. There will also be free give-aways of beach balls and water bags.
