Victim room re­opened

he police in Kensington are gearing up to face the festive season with the relaunch of their victim empowerment room at the station.

The police hosted an event last Thursday to celebrate the re-opening to coincide with the start of the 16 Days of Activism campaign with a call to residents to take this initiative seriously.

Brigadier Sonja Harri, provincial head of the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit (FCS), said at the event how important support was for mothers and women in abusive relationships. There was especially a need for support from the community.

“Sometimes it is difficult for us to understand why women stay in these relationships,” she said. “In most cases the circumstances are financially related and they worry about how they must feed their children.

Sometimes they do not want the abuser ending up in prison.

“But it is important for us to let them know what resources are available to them.

Be a support system “We must not look down on them when we see the results of that abuse. If we look down on them we become part of that abuse.

“Our role is to ensure that they know there are resources available for them. When they make that step to leave the abuse we must

become part of that support system to keep them safe.”

Harri also thanked all the counsellors who worked in this field for their help.

“All the counsellors are doing sterling work,” she said.

“You are there at the beginning when they take that big step and you play a big part when the investigation by the FCS starts.

“You give them that confidence to face their fears and make that step to change their lives.”

School safety kicks off M

uizenberg Junior School is ready to give its learners a sense of safety as the first school in a partnership between Advanced Conflict Training (ACT) and People’s Post.

The school is the first school to be sponsored in the People’s Post ACT Bear programme that aims to make teachers and learners more aware of their safety. The training in the initiative at the school is sponsored

by NBConsult.

Principal Vernon Erfort says he is excited about the programme starting in the new year, especially after the presentation by Kelee Arrowsmith, CEO of ACT that facilitates the programme at schools.

“We have learners that come from very diverse backgrounds and not all of them are from the immediate neighbourhood,” he says. “This means that many of them have to travel long distances to and from school so they are always at risk.

“Our motto at the school is that

this is ‘the school for all of us’ and that means constant care for our learners ... at school and in the communities that they come from. With this programme we will be giving them a skill that they can take with them throughout their lives.”

Nicolas Blank, Group CEO of NBConsult, says the company is excited about being involved with and supporting such an initiative.

“We’re fully supportive of the efforts of Kelee Arrowsmith and the team at ACT in getting kids from disadvantaged backgrounds educated in safety and an awareness of their emotional and physical rights.

Her school-based project aimed at this is something we as a corporate want to get behind and would look forward to getting a marketing/corporate challenge out there to see if we cannot get more schools funded for this initiative.”

spond with nominations and that more businesses will get on board to make a difference in the lives of children at risk. “I hope that this is the first of many partnerships for this project,” she says. “This sponsorship is an investment, not only in the lives of our children, but also for the communities from which they come.”

Schools selected to take part in the programme are sponsored by a business that chooses to invest in the safety of the learners at that school and will need to commit to having the programme presented for a full term.

YMCA opens centre for young opportunities T

he youth development programme Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), situated in Observatory, officially opened its new resource centre last Thursday.

YMCA aims to be a “bridge” for young people who want to get connected to opportunities in areas like self-improvement, help with drug abuse, food and other basic needs.

The programme is recognised for its continuous efforts to help the youth develop in further education, communication and leadership skills.

The Y-Justice Prison Pro-

gramme, hosted by the YMCA, takes place twice a week for four hours, and is specifically aimed at young offenders and prisoners who are about to be released.

The Youth Justice Resource Centre will help youth who are looking for short and long-term opportunities in leadership and self-development. The Y-Justice programme isn’t just aimed at offenders, but also the general walk-in public who find out about the project.

The programme hosted an event on Wednesday in celebration of the launch. Members, as well as volunteers of the organisation, spoke out about their experiences and what life was like for them before they joined the YMCA.

Elmo Lynch, a former prisoner who has been in and out of prison for the last sixteen years, has been a volunteer at the organisation for six months since his release. He says he makes his contribution by sharing his story and empowering other young people with life leadership and skills.

Lynch also participated in the Y-Justice Prison Programme for five years while locked up.

“They’ve taught me how to communicate [and] organised rehab which I completed and received a certificate for. I also did a business and an IT course which I feel is very important because today one needs to be computer literate in order to find a job.

“I feel good to be giving back. If it weren’t for the YMCA, I’d still be selling drugs,” he adds.

Brandon Kadalie, the programme’s director who also spent time in prison, says: “Young people are known for the bad things they do, and are always in conflict with the law. YMCA is a place of hope ... our home away from home.”

Sindiswa Mbude, YMCA project coordinator, says: “We ask them to join us at YMCA where we act as a bridge for change and also offer counselling to help them reconnect with their families and society. We assist them in writing up their CVs, let them use the internet to apply for jobs and look at the various online courses that are available.

We also provide accommodation and other basic needs such as food.”

Bus passengers can also load their cards at 34 cash-accepting Absa ATMs located near routes across the city.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport, says the City has been working behind the scenes for months to make it possible for bus passengers to buy MyCiTi products from more local shops close to their workplaces.

“The 41 retailers are situated in the vicinity of the trunk and feeder routes,” he says.

“These retailers include local pharmacies, grocery stores, cafes, a hairdresser, a guest house and even a perfumery.”

hen the child asked “Jinne, Auntie, what is this?” about the feather down duvet being thrown lovingly over him – the first one he’s ever come into contact with – there was not a dry eye in the big hall.

The scene was set for an emotional, but overall fun and care-free experience, when gold-hearted crews made the Sleepover Project a reality for 100 children from underprivileged areas on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November at the Wolwekloof Academy near Ceres.

Michelle Linnert, editor of People’s Post’s sister publication TygerBurger, went along as a volunteer and guardian to two groups of 16 children from across the newspapers’ distribution areas.

a bed. It was the story of a girl sleeping on two crates that had planted the seed that would culminate in this fun-filled sleepover weekend for the youngsters from across the peninsula. From areas such as Vrygrond, Hout Bay, Elsies River, Bonteheuwel, Wolseley and Riverton, some of the young participants spoke openly about how they had to dodge bullets on their way to school, or the latest shooting incident near their home a week ago.

Sandy Pekeur and her brother, Dr Shaun Pekeur, of the South African Society for Hope (Sash) and Gabriela Wiener of Afrosapien Entertainment – with a host of other well-known and not-so-well-known, but equally kindhearted, souls – made the weekend possible for the children.

Of course, with a number of equally kindhearted and generous sponsors in tow who spared no expense in treating these children to the best.

Many firsts were experienced – some ate their first hamburgers, some had their first bus trips, some swam in a stream for the first time, others danced in front of a crowd for the first time. But the biggest first – that of sleeping in a comfy bed for the very first time – was reserved for 10 very special young ones to whom these beds were donated at the end of the weekend. Each child received their own bed, to be delivered soon.

The children whispered the night away after hours of entertainment saw them into their PJs and into the sponsored sleeping bags and feather down duvets in neat rows for boys and girls in the great hall.

Noticeable at the end of the journey was the lack of worry in the eyes of many of these children who had first boarded the buses at Artscape in the city centre.

But the trip had had an even more profound effect on the adults involved. It had shaken the lot to the core, and laid the basis for the next round of 100 kids sleeping over without worries.

A

cool con man is doing the rounds with a sad story to help people get him through school and into university. But beware, it’s all a scam.

Barbara Dean from Bergvliet almost became the latest victim of the young con artist. Dean says they were approached at their home in November by a well-spoken young man who claimed to be a learner at Claremont High School.

During this visit he explained that he was promised a bursary from Allan Gray to study Actuarial Science at UCT next year but that he needed R300 to apply urgently.

Dean says documents he had with him gave his name as Daniel Similemewethe.

She describes him as of average height with a slim build, wearing glasses with short,

neatly cut hair.

Dean admits she was initially impressed by the visitor’s manner and determination to make something of his life. But during a second visit there seemed to be some inconsistencies in his story. “A call to the high school also revealed that this was not the first time that he was trying this scam.

The secretary of the school could immediately give me a description, because he had tried to con so many people before me.”

Luzuko Mayekiso of Allan Gray’s client service department is concerned about these activities, pointing out that students or prospective students who receive scholarships from them are not called on to pay any fees relating to the bursaries.

“We would like the public to know that the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation does not ask for any money with our scholarship and fellowship applications,” he says.

T

he Artscape Arena will be turned into a living museum this weekend when a group of local theatremakers present Adam Small’s Joanie Galant-hulle.

“Joanie Galant-hulle is basically about the District Six forced removals,” actress Lauren Hannie from Kenwyn explains.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the events that saw thousands of residents pushed from their homes and forced to rebuild their lives elsewhere.

Small’s piece tells this story through the Galant family who are among the displaced. After moving to the Cape Flats, Joanie’s husband Joseph is attacked and loses the ability to walk properly, which means he can no longer work or provide for his family. “They therefore can’t afford rent and once again have to move,” Lauren, who plays Joanie, explains.

The family finds themselves in an informal settlement where they are pummelled by one trauma after the next – from more attacks to losing a child.

“Through all of these things, Joanie is sort of losing her sense of reality until, eventually, she ends up in an institution.”

It is here – Lauren explains – that Joanie is finally stable and finds a home.

Through its exploration of the forced removals and the Galant family, Small’s piece explores the concept of “home” and what that means. “People are generally displaced, whether it be within themselves or whether it’s within society.”

on Small’s work. She was involved with a celebration of his writing, performing snippets of his plays and poetry at Artscape last year, where she also performed the end of this piece.

Through this process, Lauren got the chance to meet Small, who passed away earlier this year, and says she was intrigued by Joanie Galant-hulle, which was new to her.

When she asked for Small’s permission to present it, she discovered that it had never been professionally staged before.

Lauren applied for the Suidooster Festival, which is where Small got to see his work performed in its entirety for the first time.

For its run at Artscape from Thursday until Saturday 17 December, Joanie Galant-

hulle will feature Shaun Smith from Manenberg as David Anthony, Dealan Fredericks from Malmesbury as Joseph Galant and Kyle Isaacs from Somerset West as Die Koerantman under the direction of Nolan Africa from Lotus River.

Lauren had always been a fan of Nolan’s work and says she couldn’t think of anyone better to be the show’s director.

“Nolan was very attracted to the story right from the very beginning. He had done Small’s work already and he was keen.”

Getting their heads around the heavy subject matter was a little difficult for some of the young actors. “We haven’t necessarily experienced the forced removals ourselves, we only live off the remnants of it.”

Nolan eased the cast into the piece by helping them tap into emotions they have experienced. “As the process went on we spoke about loss, relating it to different instances and how that made us feel.”

That said, Lauren says Joanie is a difficult character to play.

“It’s such a crazy headspace to be in,” she says. “She scares me.”

When the show ran at the Suidooster, Lauren says the theatre was so packed that people were even sitting in the aisles. She hopes the show will do as well – if not better – this time round, as she plans to keep Small’s work alive.

“I just want to do justice to his work,” Lauren says.

Kaylor explains that they were inspired to undertake this project after visiting a friend who, before her death, had provided mentorship for the children.

“These children were very special to her and we want to continue that legacy by showing that there are people who care about them,” she says.

“While we love doing this annual Christmas treat for the children we also realise that there is also a need for basic supplies for school such as stationery and uniforms.

“Since we started we have received donations and assistance from friends and family but now we want to appeal to the public to help us make this time special for these children.”

At the annual party Burgher provides sound for the event and Kaylor organises gifts as well as treats for the day with friends and family.

Burgher adds that while Christmas is an important time to give these children special treats they are now looking at extending their help.

“Many of us like to drive to Ceres to experience [the snow in winter] but for the children in this area the reality is that they face that cold without shoes as they walk to school. Jerseys, long pants and shirts are also in short supply.

“This year we want to make a difference in their lives by calling on Cape Town to help us keep them warm during the next winter.”

He calls it “a special Christmas in July treat”.

Art remembers angst GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz The angst of apartheid suppression will be remembered on Saturday with a festival to commemorate a gathering that was banned in 1986.

This year marks 30 years since a festival titled “Towards the people’s culture” was banned. Some of the acts scheduled to perform there will be featured at the event in Salt River this weekend.

Noel Daniels, CEO of the Cornerstone Institute, where the event is hosted, remembers that the original festival was intended to gather Africa’s most prominent artists as a response to the injustices of apartheid and to firmly root the arts as a tool for pursuing social justice.

“Our event will bring together all generations across the spectrum of cultural workers, media activists, innovators, struggle

icons, artists and patrons, young and old, under the rallying call ‘Aluta Continua,’” he says. “Part of the entertainment will be acclaimed songstress Tina Schouw reflecting on her times in the 80s.

“Another iconic 80s band, Raakwys, featuring Valmont Layne, Andre Sampie and Aki Khan will also perform songs that look back at how far we’ve come on the road to freedom.”

Other performances includes Mthwakazi who will honour the sense of ceremony with her hybrid style of music which is a crossover between indigenous Xhosa bow music and opera.

Sylvestre Kabassidi will close the night with sounds from his native Ponte Noire in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Starting at 16:00 the event is hosted at the Cornerstone main campus on the corner of Durham and Victoria roads in Salt River.

Entrance is free.

Trails open to wheels Upgraded cycle routes in Table Mountain National Park have been officially opened to mountain bikers.

The park and the Table Mountain Bike Forum recently signed a revised environmental management programme (EMP) and the extra mountain biking routes were opened to the public last Thursday.

The new routes form a network of cycle routes throughout the park, including Signal Hill, Lion’s Head and above Camps Bay (“Wheels turn for routes”, People’s Post, 15 November).

New linkage routes have also been developed between Newlands and Constantia, via Kirstenbosch and the Cecilia plantation, as well as between Silvermine and Tokai.

Future plans include linking all of these trails to create a route between Signal Hill and Cape Point.

No new routes were created, with existing routes instead upgraded.

The additional routes will see cyclists share the paths with walkers and runners.

The new EMP includes a code of conduct to ensure correct riding behaviour.

All cyclists will still require permits, and some of the guidelines include staying on dedicated routes, no littering and respecting wildlife.

It was stressed at the launch that the routes could be closed should mountain bikers fail to adhere to the code of conduct.

uring the school holidays a Kensingtonbased organisation is spreading its wings to teach children some sport skills.

Play Sport 4 Life (PS4L) is giving children an opportunity participate in clinics in Kensington, Athlone and Mitchell’s Plain that will focus on developing the skills of young athletes and baseball and softball players.

The organisation is roping in its team of experts in the various sports and is also bringing in two legends in South Africa’s history of black athletics, Eddie May and Allan O’Ryan.

May was the coach of the late sprint star Kenny Roman, taking him from an average speedster to South African champion and 100m record holder.

O’Ryan was a 200m champion in the 1960s.

Miles October, PS4L head, says it is a bit of a coup to get the services of May, who has lived in Canada for the past 30 years.

“We are indebted to May for his commitment to helping young sports lovers in need in the community,” he says.

“These coaches have that knowledge resource that we need to tap into and both were inducted into a our newly-established athletics hall of fame earlier this year.

“We should use the expertise of these people when they are available to help identify and develop our future stars.”

PS4L has been actively involved in bringing positive change to underprivileged schoolchildren around Cape Town since 2014.

Its last sports holiday programme in Kensington led to an increase in junior participation in all sports codes, especially hockey.

October says children will be able to participate in the holiday programme regardless of their previous exposure to athletics, baseball and softball.

“This is part of our social commitment to community upliftment.

“We want our children in all areas to be active in a meaningful way as we guide them away from the socials ills in the community in their spare time and also to prick their interest and develop their sports skills.” . A baseball and softball clinic is hosted at the 14th Avenue sports complex in Kensington from 12 to 15 December. . On the same days there are an athletics clinic at Vygieskraal in Athlone. . Yankees’ pitching takes a beating SEAN CAMPBELL

dominant pitching performance by Callan Pearce and good batting by Anthony Phillips (4/5), Charles Cordier (3/5) and Allan Randall (2/2) helped first-placed Bellville beat second-placed Westridge Yankees 10-0 in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday.

Pearce, who plies his trade in the US minor leagues, pitched five innings and conceded only one hit while he struck out six Yankees hitters.

The Yankees pitchers took a beating. Luwayne du Plessis started the pitching and conceded four runs in the first inning and two runs in the sixth. Jayson Ripepi pitched the seventh inning and conceded a further four runs.

Knockout tournament starts NOORE NACERODIEN The Cape Town softball association’s annual knockout competition kicked off at Turfhall Stadium on Sunday.

As usual “knockout day” produced plenty of tight results. Defending champions Falcons battled against St Martins, winning 3-0.

This after completely outplaying the Saints in a league encounter the day before, winning 14-2.

Lindsay Damon performed admirably for the Saints on the pitching rubber, facing 29 batters and surrendering only two hits.

Saints also performed better with the bat, taking five hits off Nicky Jones on the Falcons mound. They failed, however, to turn the hits into runs, leaving six runners stranded on the bases.

In the later game Westridge Yankees surrendered a lead against unbeaten Glenthorn A’s, going down 6-5.

The game was played in typical knockout fashion with errors kept to a bare minimum.

In the major league, Lavender Hill maintained its unbeaten record and look set to win the double. The club easily beat Strandfontein Mets 7-2. Avendale shocked Belhar Dolphins (8-3), VOB beat Crusaders (5-0) and Heideveld Yankees easily beat Kuils River Cougars (6-1).

Tantasport’s wheels came off against Glenthorn A’s on Friday night with errors galore as they went down 20-6. In another super league game Westridge Yankees beating Normies (6-0).

Good start for Giants In Maitland, Durbanville came unstuck 6-2 against the Giants.

Both starting pitchers threw very well, with Canadian Jas Shergill conceding a run in his five innings. Shergill was replaced by Brad Erasmus who restricted Durbanville to one further run.

Darren Smith started for Durbanville and also restricted Giants to one run. He was replaced by Kevin Townsend who pitched to the end.

Jayde Thorne and Erasmus batted well for the winning team.

Maitland Giants collected a further two points when Bothasig forfeited a game scheduled for Sunday.

A’s get 13 hits Thirteen hits helped secure Athlone A’s a 12-7 victory over VOB at Chukker Road.

Casley Ripepi (2/3), PJ Abrahams (2/4), Lee Marks (2/4) and Faizel Moosa (2/5) batted well for A’s.

VOB used four pitchers, opting to start with Josh Rich who only pitched 1.3 innings

and conceded six runs from four hits.

Tim Uitvligt came on in the second inning and pitched 3.1 innings, conceding a further two runs from four hits before being replaced by Grant Robertson who conceded four runs from two hits.

Michael Scritten closed out the last three innings without conceding a run.

Carl Michaels threw seven innings, conceding four runs from five hits while striking out nine. Michaels was replaced by Lloyd Stevens who conceded three runs from five hits in his two innings.

Jared Heynes, Paul Bell and Scritten all batted (2/5) for VOB. Both teams made five errors.

Crusaders lose 17­9 Home runs for Bothasig paved the way for its 17-9 win over Crusaders in Grassy Park.

Bothasig’s top hitters were Darren Biltman (4/6), Dayle Feldtman (4/6 including a home run) and Benji Smith (4/5 including a home run). Kyle Botha also registered a home run.

Chris Jacobs (1/1 and four walks), Warren Adams (2/3) and Brent Fransman (2/5) were Crusaders’ best hitters. Chad Beukes hit a home run.

Both teams used three pitchers.

Promotion league In the promotion league Van der Stel secured a 16-1 win over Battswood in Stellenbosch on Saturday.

US import Michael Miller started on the mound for Van der Stel. He was replaced in the sixth inning by Robbie Clarke.

Battswood started with Nelson Mapika, who pitched five innings, giving up eleven runs. Emile van Zyl took over in the sixth inning. He only managed to get one out before the fifteen-run rule was applied in the sixth inning. The top batter for Battswood was Zaid Hendricks (2/3).

uke Moir from Lakeside has been crowned the People’s Post Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year.

Luke was awarded the honour at the offices of WP Media (the publisher of People’s Post) in Bellville last week.

He is an XCO mountain biker and is currently in Grade 7 at SACS Junior School.

“I was really excited that I was chosen as the winner and it is really hard to get sponsors to get you overseas, but it is really cool that I were chosen and pleasantly surprised as well,” says Luke.

He is already a national champion in his age group (u.12 and u.14) for the last three years.

XCO is the only mountain bike discipline hosted as an Olympic sport. It stands for cross-country Olympic. It consists of lap racing around a short circuit containing various obstacles that must be negotiated.

Luke aspires to the greatest of heights in the future and looks up to the late Burry Stander for inspiration.

“I really want to become one of the world’s best. I want to be world champion and Olympic champion and want to be the best that I can be. I look up to the late Burry Stander, and I do look up to the junior world champ Simon Andreassen. He is one of my favourite riders,” he says.

New surfing series to ride waves to Olympics The inclusion of surfing in the next Olympic Games has given the sport mainstream attention.

As a result, Accelerate Sport, the World Surf League (WSL) and Surfing South Africa (SSA) have launched the City Surf Series. It will consist of a series of internationally rated professional surfing events next year.

It aims to bring a QS1000-level event to all major coastal cities by 2018 and even grow into Africa in the future.

The City Surf Series concept is based on a successful pilot event, the Cape Town Pro, which was held at Bloubergstrand earlier this year. Plans are to organise a minimum of three events next year, growing to five in 2018.

The series will give South Africa’s budding professional surfers valuable rankings points on the world stage without leav-

ing the confines of their home waters, creating a cost-effective platform to transition from local hero to international superstar.

The series aims to mould this next crop of surfers into formidable international competitors, joining the likes of Jordy Smith and Bianca Buitendag, in their quest for gold at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“The City Surf Series is one of the most exciting developments in professional surfing in South Africa and Africa, and will be a fantastic springboard and opportunity to get our athletes back to the top of world surfing,” says WSL Africa operations manager Colin Fitch.

“It’s been great working with Accelerate Sports in creating a solid foundation for our future surfing stars and we look forward to partnering with SSA and the many surfing labels who share WSL Africa’s vision of paving the way for surfers from de-

velopment programmes to the highest levels of the sport internationally.”

The Durban Surf Pro, a QS1000 event scheduled for April next year, is the first confirmed event of the series, while the Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City surf pro’s are tentatively scheduled for April.

Cape Town leg The Cape Town surf pro will take place from 9 to 11 June.

The finale of the series will head back to Durban where the QS3000-rated SA Open of surfing offers more than R1m prize money and will feature 150 of the world’s best male and female surfers.

“I’m over the moon,” says this year’s WSL Africa champion Beyrick de Vries. “I feel like it’s going to be the junior series all over again, but it’s not practise this time, it’s the main stage with world rank-

ing points and prize money to assist in international events too. The City Surf Series is a massive step in the right direction for South African surfing, and the timing couldn’t be more prefect with Tokyo 2020 on the horizon.”

The series events will include WSL Africa-sanctioned events for open men and open women as well as pro junior (u.18) men and women categories.

“SSA is extremely pleased that the City Surf Series will be included on the South African surfing contest calendar next year.

Top level international surfing events that take place in South Africa will certainly help prepare our surfers for the 2020 Olympic Games and we look forward to working with the WSL on these events.
