T

he police in Kensington are gearing up to face the festive season with the relaunch of their victim empowerment room at the station. The police hosted an event last Thursday to celebrate the re-opening to coincide with the start of the 16 Days of Activism campaign with a call to residents to take this initiative seriously.

Brigadier Sonja Harri, provincial head of the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit (FCS), said at the event how important support was for mothers and women in abusive relationships. There was especially a need for support from the community. “Sometimes it is difficult for us to understand why women stay in these relationships,” she said. “In most cases the circumstances are financially related and they worry about how they must feed their children.

Sometimes they do not want the abuser ending up in prison. “But it is important for us to let them know what resources are available to them.

Be a support system “We must not look down on them when we see the results of that abuse. If we look down on them we become part of that abuse. “Our role is to ensure that they know there are resources available for them. When they make that step to leave the abuse we must

become part of that support system to keep them safe.” Harri also thanked all the counsellors who worked in this field for their help. “All the counsellors are doing sterling work,” she said. “You are there at the beginning when they take that big step and you play a big part when the investigation by the FCS starts. “You give them that confidence to face their fears and make that step to change their lives.”
