MITCHELL’S PLAIN DISTRICT HOSPITAL
‘Farewell, fallen heroes’ SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS SAMANTHA.LEE@PEOPLESPOST.CO.ZA @SAMANTHA_LEE121
S
taff of the Mitchell’s Plain district hospital have said their final farewell to nine of their colleagues who have passed away during the last few months. Two doctors, two support staff members, two nursing sisters and three enrolled nursing assistants (ENA) have passed away since April last year, as a result of Covid-19. Head of nursing at the hospital, Sister Aletta Brown says the hospital had recorded no deaths during the first wave of the pandemic, despite having had around 100 infections. Unfortunately, during the second wave, the hospital had recorded 210 infections among staff, to date; 109 of which are nurses. The hospital is

comprised of staff formerly from Jooste hospital and oversees operations of the Thuthuzela Care Centre and Heideveld emergency centre among other units. Dr Roy Chuunga, stationed at the Thuthuzela Centre died of a heart attack. Chuunga’s colleague, Dr Aashima Narula passed away 10 months later as a result of the virus. Porter Denver van Eeden passed away after a battle with cancer, with the other six health staff passing away as a result of the virus. Because of restrictions on funerals, staff say they could not visit nor attend the funerals of their colleagues, and used this opportunity to say farewell and get closure. The service was held on the hospital helipad on Wednesday 24 February. Families of the fallen heroes sat behind photographs of their loved ones at the interfaith memorial. V See more on page 3.
