merican children’s author Dr Seuss once wrote: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This will soon be a reality for learners at Zerilda Park Primary School in Seawinds after their library was officially opened last Tuesday. Learners were told about the importance of reading and how they should make use of their library. The library has 4000 books at the moment and will be used by 1300 learners at the school. Speakers emphasised the importance of reading and that the learners should grab the opportunity of having their own library. Through collaboration by organisations like Learning in Reach, the Bookery and School Aid UK
with local businesses and volunteers an unused classroom was turned into a library. The official opening was attended by representatives of different organisations, principals and premier Helen Zille. Principal Lorna Engeldo says it was a significant event because they were setting in motion a process that could change many individuals through reading. “Communities seek alternatives to bring children off the streets full of drugs and crime. A lot of people had lost hope because they don’t have the resources, but this library has brought hope – not only to the children of this school but to the community. “We have seen how our children thirst for knowledge and they are faced with the challenge of no quiet place to complete homework or to read. This library will unlock so many doors for our children.” V Continued on page 4.
Join us in the #WeKPost campaign People’s Post is calling on all our readers to join in on a year-long charity drive with us, starting this month. We will try to make a tangible difference in the lives of the vulnerable in our communities – with your help – through our #WeKPost campaign. Our team of reporters, advertising representatives, administrative staff and management, as well as the staff of our sister publications TygerBurger and City Vision, are working together to help a different worthy charity every month. . A theme for each month, which will be reflected in our stories, pictures and news re-
ports, will be announced at the start of each month. . We will ask you, our readers, to join us as we collect donations according to the various themes and to nominate your favourite charity as the possible beneficiary for that month. . Details will be made available in each week’s edition, so you’ll stay up to speed on each project, including the announcement of the chosen beneficiary and the next month’s charity drive. . We will also publish reports and pictures
of each handover event and ask our readers to send in their own pictures, letters, emails and SMSes from time to time.
FEBRUARY’S DRIVE We are a softie where animals are concerned, so in the spirit of Valentine’s month we are launching our first month’s charitable drive with the theme “Love is a four-legged word”. . We will be collecting and donating dog and
cat food, blankets, litter, animal toys, tick and flea products – anything animal-related – to a charity of your choice. Nominate your paw pal charity by emailing post@peoplespost.co.za. . Follow our Facebook page for updates on this month’s drive. . Drop off your donation for our four-legged friends at our office at 112 Edward Street in Bellville or at the Vangate Mall centre management offices. Join us to make our community a little better – one month, one organisation at a time. Every bit counts.
