Safehouse raided

A

safehouse for abused women and children experienced a huge blow when the property was broken into and items worth about R45 000 stolen.

Now the home is in dire need of supplies and is turning to the public for support.

The home is situated in Wynberg, but the precise address cannot be revealed to protect the vulnerable women and children who live at the premises.

Warrant officer Silvino Davids, spokesperson of Wynberg police station, has confirmed the break-in.

The safehouse is managed by Lavender Hill-based organisation Philisa Abafazi Bethu.

Manager Janine Poggenpoel says the home is an emergency facility which provides a safe space for women for up to 72 hours. And there have been women and their children who have stayed longer, depending on their situation.

“We take care of these women and children and provide them with a place of safety, away from their abusive homes and partners,” she says.

The break-in has made it difficult for them to take on more people as they are low on supplies.

“We can only accommodate a certain number of people as we rely on donations and fundraisers who host events to raise the money needed to buy basic supplies,” she says.

Poggenpoel says the property stolen in-

cludes brand-new blankets, as well as food and clothing.

“These are all basic items required to help the women and children. It is tough for us now, but somehow we manage. But we do call on the public to support us,” she says.

The home has been open since 2012 and caters for women and children from all communities. Some of the women who enter the home come with little or nothing and everything is provided for them – from clothing and food to supplies for their babies, which Poggenpoel says is “extremely costly”.

“We feel bad when we have to turn someone away because we do not have enough space or food. We have dedicated our time to this home, to making it a place where women and their children can feel safe. Here we guide and protect them, but we cannot

do it without the support of the public.”

Poggenpoel says after the break-in everyone is feeling vulnerable and scared.

“We are only women here and we feel like our space has been invaded. The little bit that we have was taken from us and for women and children who come from abusive backgrounds it is extremely scary,” she adds.

Poggenpoel says that despite the break-in they will continue to provide a safe space for women and children who are victims of sexual and domestic violence to live freely and without fear and to support and educate women and children about their rights and freedoms.

Healthcare must uphold dignity M

ental Health Awareness Month is celebrated annually in October. This year Cape Mental Health will be raising awareness around the theme of “Dignity in mental health”.

One in four people in all communities have a mental health condition, and one in every four people has, at some point in their lives, experienced a loss of dignity because of their mental health condition, says Cape Mental Health director Ingrid Daniels.

“Few people understand the true meaning of dignity, and even fewer realise the

extraordinary impact it has on our lives and relationships. The social exclusion, lack of resources, inequality, discrimination and stigma faced by many people with a mental illness inhibits the restoration of their dignity,” she says.

Cape Mental Health is aiming to restore the dignity of patients and to address external factors that erode their dignity by offering comprehensive, proactive and enabling mental health services in the province.

Despite the existence of legislation, there are still crucial issues that need to be ad-

dressed and rectified to ensure the dignity of mental health care patients, Daniels says.

These include easy and reliable access to the correct medication, access to community-based rehabilitation centres, the allocation of sufficient beds and resources to psychiatric and other health care facilities, ensuring medical staff have basic training in and understanding of mental health and ensuring patient participation in treatment plans and policy implementation.

“Although South Africa has legislation in place to ensure the protection of the

rights of people with psychiatric and intellectual disabilities, it is our ongoing responsibility to ensure that this legislation is implemented so that all South Africans are treated with dignity and respect,” she says.

Michael Hattingh, a member of Cape Mental Health’s psychosocial rehabilitation programme, called Fountain House, says: “We should always remember that in order to restore dignity, all people living with a mental illness have a voice and should be heard. I am not defined by my mental illness.”

Do the penguin waddle On Saturday facilities around the world, including the Two Oceans Aquarium, will be celebrating African Penguin Awareness Day. The endangered African penguin is found only along the Southern African coastline.

A number of activities will take place at the Aquarium on the day to celebrate.

A mini Penguin Waterfront Waddle will kick things off. This year, the 2.5km route will amble through the Waterfront, starting and finishing at the Aquarium. All participants are encouraged to wear black and white in support of the penguins and to join the festivities from 08:30 for complimentary beverages. The waddle will start at 09:00.

Waddlers are also encouraged to bring their own water, as bottled water is not encouraged.

Samantha, the Aquarium’s penguin mascot, will make an appearance and members of the Aquarium will have the opportunity to see the movie City slickers – A tale of two African penguins.

Prominent Muslim leader dies EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt The Muslim community of Athlone is in mourning after the death of Shaykh Abd Al Rasheed Brown on Wednesday last week.

Brown was a prominent leader and Qari (a person who recites the Qur’an with the proper rules of recitation). He was a greatgrandson of Shaykh Abdullah Taha Gamieldien and great-grandson of imam Shaheeboe of the Chiappini Street Masjied.

Brown was an imam at the Masjidul Quds in Gatesville and at Masjidus Sunni in Kromboom.

He had ten siblings. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Theology at Icosa before studying Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town, and obtained diplomas in Management, Counselling and Conflict Management, HR Development and IT training. Brown was an accomplished international speaker, lecturer and Qari.

Sadness The Cape Town Islamic Education Centre (CTIEC) has expressed its sadness at Brown’s passing.

“We pray that Allah Almighty through the Wasila of His Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW), grants him a lofty station in paradise. The CTIEC forwards its condolences to his family, followers and students,” the Centre says in a statement.

Coming to terms Khalifa Mufti Sayed Haroon Al Azhari, head of the Cape Town Ulama Board, and Hafez Zaid Sayed, deputy principal of the CTIEC, Shaykh Sayed Noor Ad Dusuqi, executive member of the CTIEC, Shaykh Sayed Ridhwaan Ziyaee, Zia ul Uloom and other officials of the CTIEC also expressed their deep sadness and prayed for Brown’s high rank in paradise and patience for South Africans at coming to terms with this loss.

“He was one whose knowledge, sincerity and honesty gave us some comfort in this place; someone whom we could depend on for the knowledge of our religion; verily, he has departed from the company of the men of this earth to the company of the men of the Hereafter,” says the CTIEC.

C

hildren should live free from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

This is the message two student social workers brought across to youth in Vrygrond during a community event.

The aim of the project was to address the youngsters and bring them awareness about their rights.

Tamlyn Isaacs, a Retreat resident and fourth-year Social Work student at the University of the

Western Cape, along with her colleague Derisia Nimrod, hosted the event last week.

“We conducted our activities by looking at artistic ways to make children aware of South Africans’ Constitutional rights. This includes rap, poetry, drawing, sketching and graffiti to engage with the youth,” she adds.

Isaacs is currently completing her Bachelor’s degree and doing an internship at Childline in Wynberg.

part of Lifeline/Childline Western Cape, a non-profit organisation that works with various communities in the greater Cape Town area.

The Childline services include counselling children individually and working with them in groups and in communities.

The organisation’s help is focused on trauma debriefing, bereavement or grief counselling, court preparation and support after rape and sexual abuse.

“We believe our country has a great Constitution but yet so many children’s rights are violated.

Child protection is everybody’s responsibility. We want a South Africa fit for children. Children’s rights are human rights,” Isaacs says.

The workshop took place at the SOZO Foundation, which is situated in Vrygrond.

Isaacs says the Foundation is an NGO creating opportunities for holistic development through focus areas, including “youth education, home restoration, food security and life skills”.

“In order for their work to not only impact lives and families now, but to be sustainable for years to come, they commit to form deep and wide foundations in the community through building lasting relationships with individuals, families, community leaders and other like-minded organisations,” she says. The foundation participates in the community by being part of the community.

Mall thief strikes again to take women’s shopping ASTRID FEBRUARIE @FebAstrid

hoppers are warned to be vigilant as the festive season comes closer. Several more cases have been reported of women who were conned and their belongings stolen.

People’s Post previously reported that the Wynberg police has seen over 10 cases in which women have been conned into “buying clothes” at half price only to have their belongings stolen (“Watch out for ‘friendly shop helper’”, 26 May).

Warrant Officer Silvino Davids, spokesperson of Wynberg police station, says there have been more incidents recently.

“All shoppers – not only women – need

to be vigilant at all times, as this could happen to anyone. We urge shoppers to never let their personal items out of their sight,” Davids says.

Several women have been duped into leaving their belongings with strangers under false promises of buying items at several clothing stores at discount prices.

Davids says a group of women have been targeting shoppers in a mall in Wynberg.

“Many of the victims were approached in one specific store in the mall,” he says.

According to the investigating detective the suspect somehow convinces the victim that she is a store employee and can get the victim “whatever they want for half the price”.

“The suspect then tells the victim if they

are interested to meet with them outside the mall, where about three to four other ‘interested buyers’ are waiting,” he says.

The con artist explains that they can only go back into the store with one “interested buyer” at a time.

The suspect asks the women gathered to leave all their belongings, including their handbags, cellphones, purses and even their shopping bags, with the other “interested buyers” who are waiting for their turn.

The suspect first takes one of her accomplices back to the store. This woman returns with clothing she says has been purchased from the store. “This, however, is only a way to make the victim trust that the suspect is the real deal,” he says.

What happens next is that the victim leaves all her belongings, goes back to the clothing store with the suspect and is told to pick out what she wants. She is told to go back outside the mall to where the other “interested buyers” are and wait there.

However, the victim realises as soon as she gets outside the mall to the “waiting area” that the other three or four “interested buyers” are missing – with her belongings.

“This is a well thought out scam and the victims are easily lured into purchasing items at a discount price,” he says.

Davids urges shoppers to be careful and not fall for scams like this one. “If anyone has any information on the suspects or has been approached in this manner please report it to the police,” he says.

quick response by a lifeguard saved the lives of two teens at Camps Bay beach last weekend.

Senior lifeguard Mzikayise Jacobs from Mandalay says two boys, aged 16 and 17 years, were swimming on Saturday 3 October between 16:30 and 17:00.

“We were doing crowd control on the west side of the beach when we saw the teens swimming. We blew the whistles but they did not take note. My colleague then blew the whistle again,” he tells People’s Post.

“The one then got caught in a rip current.

His friend then tried to help him and also got caught. I noticed he was struggling and my colleague followed. We managed to get them out and swam them to shore where the one was treated for hypothermia.”

Both teens from Kraaifontein survived the ordeal.

“We are very grateful to the Camps Bay lifeguards on duty, whose efficient teamwork ensured the safety of the bathers,” says Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.

Jacobs has been a lifeguard for more than 15 years and is one of the 12 new lifeguards permanently employed by the City of Cape Town (“More lifesavers to guard swimmers”, People’s Post, 6 October).

The City has these safety tips for bathers: . Swim only where there are lifeguards and where signs indicate that it is safe. . Do not swim in an area if there are no lifeguards present. . Make sure that the lifeguards can see you when you are in the water. . Always swim in supervised swimming areas, taking care to avoid dangerous rip currents and tides. . Only swim in areas where other people are present. Swim in groups and advise friends or family when you go swimming. . Do not swim when there are marine animals such as whales, dolphins and seals in the area or when a marine animal carcass has washed up onto the beach. . If you find yourself in trouble, raise your arm and wave to attract a lifeguard’s attention. Try not to panic, as this will make you tired. . If you see someone in trouble in the sea, alert the lifeguards or find trained help. Do not put your own life in danger as well. . Do not swim after drinking alcohol. . Report any drunk beachgoers to the lifeguard.

Jacobs also reminds people not to try and save others if they are not qualified to do so.

“Like in this case where the boy tried to save his friend, he also got into trouble,” he says.

Jacobs says he is passionate about saving lives.

He joined the Mnandi lifesaver club in 1998 and previously swam for the Gugulethu Gunners swimming club.

He encourages youngsters to get involved in lifesaving.

“If you can’t swim, it should not stop you.

I would like to encourage the youth to join a swimming club and then a lifesavers club to qualify,” he says.

Through this message Southfield Neighbourhood Watch members want to encourage residents to join the organisation to help make the community a safer place.

Last week the watch, in partnership with three other neighbourhood watches and Diep River police, set out on a patrol in the early hours of the morning.

People’s Post joined the neighbourhood watch on a patrol last week to see exactly what they did when out on the street.

About 20 to 25 residents and police members gathered at the police station before they started their patrol.

Freddie Daniels, vice-chairperson of the Southfield Neighbourhood Watch, says when out on patrol their aim is to deter criminals from committing crime in the community.

“Our aim is to ensure that we keep our community safe and deter any criminal activity. We need to be proactive if we want to make a difference here,” he says.

During the patrol they regularly urge residents to join the neighbourhood watch. Being a neighbourhood watch member does not mean that you have to patrol as there are many other roles to play, they say.

“An active member can be someone walking their dogs to the park. If they see

something suspicious they can report it to the watch or police.

“Even sitting at home in the garden or watching through the window can be as proactive as someone going out on a patrol,” he says.

There are many elderly people in the neighbourhood, Daniels says, who need to be taken into consideration.

“We cannot expect the elderly to patrol like we do and therefore urge residents to look out for them,” he says.

In driving around on the patrol the watch members check the parks, canals, open fields and the train station.

“We also check if people have left their gates and garages open. If it is we stop and knock on their door and alert them to the risk it may be to have their property open,” he says.

Daniels adds that the train station is one of their biggest headaches as there have been many reports of people getting robbed there in the early hours of the morning.

“Here are many people who rely on public transport, like the trains, and they have no choice but to walk to the station and wait for the trains. It is unfair that they fall victim to robbery or any other crime here,” he says.

Daniels says they patrol the station area on every patrol during the hours people are expected to be at the station, to look out for their safety.

“We need to be the eyes and the ears for our neighbours too; not only for their safety but for ours too,” he says.

A sting in the tail that really bites DESIRÉE RORKE

A

waking from their winter dormancy, the devilish and very invasive little black and yellow Paper wasps are back to make life hell for residents of Cape Town. But the City says they are ready for this onslaught.

Since invading the city several years ago, the species – said to have made their appearance in Kuils River in 2010 – have plagued local households.

Since the launch of the invasive wasp control (IWC) teams in 2014, the City has removed 8 000 European paper wasp nests from suburbs across the Cape including areas such as Ottery, Plumstead, Constantia, Woodstock, Athlone and Wetton, says Mayco member for energy, environmental and spatial planning, Johan van der Merwe.

Both alien invasive wasp species, the European paper wasp (polistes dominula) and the German wasp (vespula germanica) are listed as a category 1b invasive species in the Alien and Invasive Species regulations in the National Environmental Management Biodiver-

sity Act. “This means that scientists have agreed that the wasps, by law, have to be removed as they pose a threat to the local ecosystem and several important industries such as deciduous fruit, wine and bee keeping industries,” says Van der Merwe.

In some parts of the USA, where the same wasps invaded in the 1980’s and 90’s, entire colonies of indigenous species were destroyed.

Cape Town residents are advised to be aware that the sting from these wasps is particularly painful.

“Last season there were many reports of the German wasp stinging workers harvesting grapes and other fruit. The wasps also present a hazard to residents who may unintentionally disturb a colony.”

A second team was introduced, following the hundreds of sightings and wasp removal requests by residents last summer.

“Residents are encouraged to report sightings to the City or contact a reputable pest control company.

Property owners are primarily responsible for pest control on their

premises, and the City will assist according to available capacity,” he says.

If nests are removed privately, property owners are urged to send a report containing their street address and the number of nests removed to invasive.species@capetown.gov.za as this helps with the City’s future planning and research.

“The City will make every effort to timeously assist the public where possible, within our available capacity, to ensure their safety and peace of mind,” says Van der Merwe. He adds that the IWC teams are neither trained nor equipped to deal with bee removal.

Should residents require bee removal, they should contact a professional bee keeper. The team will also not exterminate indigenous wasps. Residents who would like assistance can upload sightings on the spotter network at www.capetowninvasives.org.za/edrr/targetlist, and thereafter they will be contacted to arrange the removal. On Thursday morning, some 100 vision impaired children, many of them suffering from eye abnormalities as a result of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), were treated to Maya the Bee at Ster-Kinekor Gape Gate, having discovered their newfound vision.

For these little five to seven-year-olds, this was their first cinema experience after receiving either spectacles or eye surgery.

“Growth inside the retina is affected by FAS, resulting in these children having severe vision impairment. Some of them can be helped by means of spectacles or in more severe cases surgery if detected early enough,” said France Nxumalo from the Brien Haden Vision Institute in Durban.

The institute is currently in the process of expanding their work to the Western Cape winelands and has teamed up with local NPO My Little Eye. “We go to wine farms to screen the children of the farm workers for vision impairment. We then refer them to clinics and institutions such as Brien Haden to assist them with the help they might need,” says Ramona Lubbe from My Little Eye. The day’s activities also marked World Sight Day and the start of National Eye Care Awareness month.

Engelman says sight is integral to appreciating the wonderful world of cinema.

could be avoided in eight out of 10 cases if proper testing is conducted at an early age.

The visual system is fully developed between 10 and 11 years, when a problem might be corrected and vision preserved,” she says.

“Poor eye sight can also not only make the learning experience uncomfortable, but it also hinders progress in the classroom, sporting and extra-mural ability and social integration.”

Research done at UCT has shown that the Western Cape’s wine region has one of the highest reported levels of FAS in the world – levels of up to 300 per 1 000 children are afflicted in some Boland regions, according to Dr Susan Levine, a medical anthropologist with the University of Cape Town.

Due to the legacy of the age old “dop system” implemented 300 years ago, but banned in the 1960s, alcoholism is still widespread on the wine farms around Paarl and Stellenbosch.

Harry Rosen, CEO of the South African Optometric Association also attended the event and said eye sight is often taken for granted. “Without spectacles none of these kids would have been able to watch the movie today. The sad reality is that hundreds of thousands South Africans are vision impaired, but have no access to eye care.”

Holiday is a dance step

T

he Homework Enrichment Life Skills Programme (Help) premises in Vrygrond were abuzz with activity and music last week.

The non-profit organisation’s pupils were taught some impressive dance moves during the school holiday.

Katlego Moncho from Sibonelo Dance Project took the children through their paces and taught them multiple dance styles, including kwaito and hip-hop.

In 2012 Moncho was accepted to the three-year training programme at Jazzart Dance Theatre, where Debbie Bird of the African Dance Theatre offered her the opportunity to become one of

the group’s dancers.

At the beginning of this year she performed in Orpheus in Africa, a Fugard theatre musical directed by David Kramer.

Help is a non-profit organisation that runs daily after-school programmes, an AMV (“ambition, motivation and vision”) club and a holiday club.

Moncho says they would like to instil an “I can” mentally in the children with the classes.

“It is better to try than to believe you cannot do it at all,” she says.

The goal of the dance classes was to boost the children’s self-esteem as many of them come from poor and im-

poverished areas.

While also having fun, the classes taught them the benefit of hard work and that they can achieve anything if they put their minds to it.

“The lively youngsters were fast to pick up on the moves and soon were able to perform a superb and energetic show,” Moncho says.

Jean Mackenzie, co-founder of Help, says they are very appreciative of Moncho and what she achieved with the children. “The way she has inspired them is out of this world,” she says.

Plastic is ‘gold’ for disabled TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

S

ome people might regard a bread tag and the bread plastic bag as useless, not knowing it is full of mobility for others.

A bread tag and plastic bag, if collected and recycled, enables people to get wheelchairs.

A Good Samaritan who has been working for the Bread Tag Foundation for the past eight years knows the potential and has given people in her area another lease on life.

Karen Andriaanse donated three wheelchairs to residents of Factreton and Kensington last week. She says it was as simple as collecting bread tags and plastic bags. The money that’s obtained from recycling them bought wheelchairs.

“People take these two (a bread tag and plastic bag) for granted, not knowing that someone’s life depends on it. By putting them together other people are able to live independently because they are given their mobility back when they get a wheelchair.

It really makes me happy that I’m able to contribute positively to the people in my community,” she says.

One recipient, Michael Fisher from Sunderland Street, was ecstatic that he could move around again and be outdoors.

“I was a vendor and a freak accident left me unable to walk. I’m so happy that with this wheelchair I got I will be able to move around and go to the shops on my own. It’s not easy having to rely on other people to do things for you, but I’m glad this is another chance to live life to the fullest,” he says.

“Each tag, as useless as it may seem, is gold to someone who cannot walk. I encourage members of the community to make a difference and help me to collect bread tags and bread plastic bags,” says Andriaanse.

Andriaanse did it as part of a Peace Builders project. She was amongst 20 people who

“To deal with things you must first have

inner peace. I want to spread that message amongst other people in my community.”

Craft shed at V&A awarded The new home for African craft and design, the V&A Waterfront’s Watershed, has been recognised twice over for its design and redevelopment at two prestigious award ceremonies.

The R50m redevelopment of a former craft market and disused workshop into a hub for quality African art and design now known as the Watershed, was recognised at this year’s Cape Institute for Architecture (CIfA) Awards and at the 19th Annual South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Congress.

Local struggle veteran dies B

ennie Bunsee, a political commentator and journalist and former executive member of the Wynberg Residents and Ratepayers’ Association died on Saturday.

Bunsee would have celebrated his 80th birthday on 22 October.

Resident Darron Arouja says Bunsee made Wynberg his home when he returned from exile under apartheid, and lived in Prospect Hill Road.

Bunsee had open-heart surgery only a short while ago, but was readmitted to hospital with post-surgery complications.

Raised in Chesterville, Durban, Bunsee was a struggle veteran. As a teenager he taught himself to type so as to follow his dream of a career in journalism, focusing especially on politics.

Serving Wynberg Bunsee served on the first Wynberg Residents and Ratepayers’ Association (WRRA) executive committee, having regularly attended public meetings to assist with the formation of the Association. Bunsee was particularly outspoken against crime in Wynberg and was a member of the WRRA’s first community safety subcommittee.

He regularly attended public meetings convened by the WRRA, and openly voiced his support for the Association against the “controversial” BRT route.

Bunsee attended the first candlelight vigil held by the SRFA against the BRT route in February, and walked the route

More time for burials over weekends From the beginning of this month the burial hours at Maitland, Welmoed and Khayelitsha cemeteries have been extended on Saturdays and Sundays.

This is being done for a trial period of six months. The purpose of the extension is to accommodate more burials over the weekend, to provide a more dignified service in the busiest cemeteries and to avoid congestion between noon and 14:00.

The extended hours will be on Saturdays from 08:00 to 16:00 and on Sundays from noon to 15:00.

he Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) will be among the local acts showcasing their talents on this year’s Fringe programme of the Baxter Dance Festival on Saturday from 14:00.

The BTC dancers will be performing their original dance drama Cape dances through the ages.

The Baxter Dance Festival aims to provide emerging and established dance companies and choreographers with an opportunity to present their works.

This includes work by youth groups, dance schools, school groups and traditional dance groups.

BTC has participated in the festival since 2009.

Cape dances through the ages is made up of various dance styles synonymous with the people of the Western Cape. These styles are strung together by a story of a mother and daughter who share their dance memo-

ries while going through photos.

The production stars Jaydine Ross, Ashlyn Daniels, Nicole Ross, Amy du Plooy, Cameron Toerien, Caelina-Joy Charles, Tegan Roberts, Jolene Daniels, Wyden Adams, Emile Petersen, Clint van de Broeck, Kaylam Jacobs and Dillon Paulse with choreography by Jaydine Ross and Emile Petersen.

The teenage dancers sacrificed their school holiday to prepare for the show.

The Cape Welsh Choir will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a special concert on Wednesday 28 October.

Choir, guests recreate WWII LOUISA STEYL @LouNotes “To be part of a 75th anniversary is always special, but to be part of a memorial event for that period of time is really special.”

So says Barrie Jones, treasurer and chorister of the Cape Welsh Choir. The all-male group will be presenting a really special concert to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain on Wednesday 28 October.

With the 75th anniversary being “quite a milestone”, this year’s concert will be something extra special.

“For us it’s a big departure,” Barrie says, explaining that they would normally sing in the Welsh male voice choir style.

This time round, the Cape Welsh Choir has put a full production together in the spirit of reflecting the “era and circumstances” around World War II. The concert takes place against the backdrop of a specially-built set that recreates a typical bomb shelter in the London underground, with the choir dressed in clothes typical of the era.

“It sounds dramatic maybe, but they were hard times, so there are no pink shirts. It’s all very staid, working-class stuff.”

They’ll be singing medleys of a selection of well-known songs from the time.

“All of those songs were used to embolden that spirit of resistance.”

Barrie explains that music was used in World War II to unify Britain. Many of the songs were popularised by “the force’s sweetheart”, Vera Lynn.

South African soloist Yvette Elliott will be bringing Lynn’s songs to life, complete with period costumes. They’ll be joined by the Cape Field Artillery Pipes and Drums and guests from the UK: The RAF Salon Orchestra big band and the Queen’s Colour Squadron with precision marching.

“I think it’s going to be a very special occasion,” Barrie says, adding: “It’s going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Retreat singer and songwriter Lydia Lategan is preparing to launch her debut EP in Steenberg at the end of the month.

The annual Banff Mountain Film Festival world tour comes to South Africa this month, bringing with it adventures by ski, bike, ropes and on rock and water.

The world tour visits 44 countries to bring a selection of films on exploration, adventure, culture, environment and mountains to growing audiences.

he’s a singer, a writer, an artist, an entrepreneur and a mother.

Retreat’s Lydia Lategan is a woman of many talents. She’ll be showcasing a few of them when she releases the first three tracks off her upcoming album with a concert at Upper Hall Church, in Sonata Street, Steenberg on Sunday 1 November.

While she plans to officially launch Master of the eagle, her debut, 12-track album, in February next year, she’ll be giving music fans a taste with a three-track EP titled He knew everything at the end of the month.

“They are three beautiful songs,” she says.

Personal songs Lydia describes her music as “very inspiring”. A mixture of country and gospel, the upcoming album tells the story of her own personal journey of restoration through religion.

Lydia says the album, produced by Damian Roman, will be encouragement for people from all walks of life.

It was love that motivated Lydia to begin writing. She started with a story about a childhood love, the same love that inspired 70 poems in three days later in her life. One of these, “Down memory lane”, was published in a poetry anthology.

As with her poetry, Lydia’s songs come straight from the heart, telling stories that cover the full spectrum of human emotions; from lost love to hope and unexpected luck.

She is constantly writing, sometimes working on three songs at a time, but when she isn’t making music, Lydia is also a painter. Some of her work will be exhibited before her performance at the Upper Hall Church.

Plans The busy mother of two – now adult – children also runs signwriting, catering and interior decorating businesses.

She is also planning a gospel concert titled Old time religion in which she’ll bring various artists together to perform “songs you don’t hear anymore”.

Direct claimant Edwina Makgamatha is a survivor of a hit-and-run accident that nearly claimed her life and left her partner seriously injured. To this day, the driver who caused the horrific accident five years ago on the notorious Mabopane Highway outside Pretoria, resulting in the car rolling several times, is unknown.

For her physical needs, the RAF ensured that Edwina received all mobility disability devices she required such as a wheelchair, a bath bench and pressure mattresses.

Furthermore, her home was modified to make it more accessible for wheelchair use, while hand controls were installed in Edwina’s car, allowing her to regain her independence once again.

Today, Edwina has victoriously turned her pain into a new mission in life – she is making a difference in the lives of many left paralysed by road crashes, especially those living in townships where services for the disabled remain poor.

Her company, Thusanang (meaning ‘to help one another’), has forged close ties with numerous manufacturers of mobility disability products and along with her specially trained caregivers, refers them for home and car modifications. She does motivational talks, visits rehab centres, supplies medical consumables, and is even establishing a driving school for disabled people!

“The RAF has not only given me support during a hectic period but has also assisted me to establish my business,” she said. “When I was young, I wanted to be a nurse, and I feel what I’m doing now is the closest thing to achieving my dream.”

Switch off Our lives have become intrinsically linked with technology.

We would never dream of leaving the house without a cellphone. Not feeling the weight of one in your pocket leaves you feeling vulnerable, naked.

While we’re more connected than ever before, we’ve forgotten how to actually connect with those around us.

How often do you sit around a table with friends, with at least one person (if not all of them) glued to their phones?

Cellphones take prized place next to the bed, are always kept on full volume and can’t be ignored, even while driving – or at least that’s how we behave.

But when did we forget our manners?

When did it become socially acceptable to ignore your dinner company to reply to a text message or to answer emails while in a meeting?

And surely switching your phone off during an event, concert, movie, wedding or church service should be a basic courtesy.

Yet we regularly find little Tommy’s solo in the school play, the romantic love scene of the latest blockbuster or even the vows of a bride and groom interrupted by the chirping of a phone.

What does it say about us as a society that money has to be spent on advertising to ensure cellphones are turned off before a movie and priests have to start sermons by asking that cellphones be switched off?

It speaks to a lack of respect for others that we can’t even manage simple cellphone etiquette.

But really, it should be quite simple – if you wouldn’t talk during the event, others shouldn’t hear your cellphone.

It’s a courtesy that we should expend without thinking, as simple as saying please or thank you.

So please turn off your cellphone. Thank you.

I am one of ‘those’ I lived in a shack made of metal sheets, wood and plastic.

I remember how my mother made food – of which there was never second helpings – on a primus stove if she and my dad got some money and other times, which were mostly, my mother cooked food on an open fire.

My clothes were always broken and dirty. Now and then I would get a pair of shoes either too small or too big, but it was my shoes. Every morning my dad would take his trolley, which he somehow got from a supermarket, and with his thin, dirty clothes and broken shoes leave our shack – our home – to skuddle.

I would later learn what the word “skuddle” meant for my parents and for us children. Every day and night for years I and my family used the same blankets, which got thinner and more torn year after year.

I would play with children around me also living in shacks and I knew no other way. I thought this was how one was supposed to live.

At age six I saw some children put on a set of neat clothing they would call a school uniform and walk for miles to a school to “get educated”. When I asked my mother when was I going to be educated, she would tell me “One day when there is money” and when they would get a cement and brick house from the government.

At age seven I was taken by my dad to help him skuddle. We walked out of the rickety fence surrounding our informal settlement and I was so proud, so excited to go with my daddy to work, to skuddle and so contribute to our survival and to curb the ever-lingering hunger pains.

We came to big, beautiful brick houses with big tarred roads, big fences and everywhere there were shiny cars.

Everywhere fat little children my age were playing and sounding happy in beautiful, neat clothes.

To me this was like another world and, with all the lawns and parks and tarred roads, I thought this was heaven.

I then saw bins standing on the pavements and dad explained to me that “die

ryk mense” (the rich people) place their garbage and dirt in these bins. In these bins were goodies: Items my dad would scratch out and place in his trolley.

The bins had all kinds of smells, mostly unpleasant, but this did not deter my daddy. This was skuddle.

I will never forget how I innocently waved and smiled at the uncle and the aunties behind the fences of these beautiful homes. To my shock I was ignored as if I was a pest, a disease.

But a very few greeted my dad and handed him a few items of clothing and some bread. My dad and others of our community had to hurry before the trucks came to empty the bins.

With my dad’s guidance I helped heap or load plastic, cardboard and metal pieces onto our trolley. In some bins my dad found some clothing and now I knew where my “new” clothing came from.

At the end of the skuddle we went to the nearest scrapyard and my dad got R53 for his goods. We went to a shop and Dad bought a half loaf of bread, a tin of fish, four loose cigarettes for him and Mom, R7 French polony and a lollipop for me.

Now, years later, I own my own trolley and I do my own skuddle. When I see a piece of newspaper lying around I admire the pictures but the words mean nothing to me as I cannot read and yet I live in a beautiful country with a wonderful concept that is the Constitution that states all citizens are equal, so the people and the politicians say. And I hear people preached that in the Bible Jesus stated very clearly that one must love one’s neighbour as one loves oneself, and I also hear in our democratic South Africa we have freedom of movement and freedom of association, but yet I am called “those people”.

Then my prayer is that you who live in brick homes, who have work, who have bank accounts and are educated, you or your children will never wear my shoes or my clothing and live where I live.

‘Lovely language’ is marginalised We recently celebrated Heritage Month and Day as a rich, proud nation of diversity, the rainbow nation with its eleven languages.

It should not just be a day to take off from work but to celebrate our true identity, our upbringing, our patriotism, traditions, cultures.

I was born in the lovely town of Upington in the Northern Cape, a province rich with culture and blessed with the most friendly people.

It is where Afrikaans is proudly spoken. Where people speak the language like poetry. So, it is part of my culture, my upbringing and tradition.

Over the last decade or so I have come to realise with alarm that this lovely language is being marginalised, especially at schools. If a parent wants to enrol their child whose home language is Afrikaans, they have limited options.

They are then indirectly forced to put their children in English-speaking classes. This then forces the child to not be confident in class, to feel overwhelmed and struggle and in some cases it is a contributing factor to the drop-out figure.

In Mitchell’s Plain, for example, there are very few Afrikaans classes for entry-level education and some parents have to look outside the area. I am quite sure the department knows about the situation but “fiddles while Rome burns” and want to be politically correct.

I read that the department wants to introduce Mandarin as well as an African language into the school syllabus, which is good if it makes our children more marketable but not at the expense of other equally important languages.

Let us be accommodating in our proud heritage in our quest for true nation building.

Young Idols conquer all JOSEPH PILLAY

A

sizzling volley, 25 yards from goal by defender Lwandile Soboyise lifted Young Idols to its maiden Coca-Cola Cup crown at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

The Manenberg outfit was wrapped in glory after 90 minutes of thrilling soccer as they saw off an equally determined Milan United 2-1 in the lucrative Safa Cape Town knockout competition.

The competition is modelled after the iconic English FA Cup, attracting 532 amateur teams throughout the region.

Young Idols’ ability to show off its prowess, in which the team members dished up some silky moves, probably signified their hunger and willingness to produce the goods to walk away as champions.

Milano United was not completely out of it, but the team was not as effective as its Young Idols counterpart, playing good soccer, but in the wrong areas. When eventually given the opportunity to score twice through striker Fawaaz Basadien, they failed to convert their chances into goals.

That squared chances in which their coach Desmond Crowie shook his head in vain.

The boys in the white and green shirts were spurred on by the brass band from the Manenberg community. Like a 12th man, the band lifted the players. The moment of

magic arrived in the 73rd minute when Lwandile Soboyise put up his hand, whizzed past the first two defenders before turning his body in and out of the next four markers.

He then unleashed from 25m a volley that left Milano United’s custodian Kyle Johnson clutching invisible straw.

That turned out to be the decisive matchwinner that had the R35000 prize and the trophy engraved in Young Idols’ name on a pedestal.

While Crowie and his Milano players’ noses were left buried in the turf – shocked and disappointed, they still earned R20 000.
