Whole month for dignity It was a close call between two paw pal charities – with only 12 nominations separating the top two – but in the end the Tears animal rescue organisation in Sunnydale came out tops.

The People’s Post team will visit Tears today to hand over donations received in the #WeKPost “Love is a four-legged word” charity campaign.

And with a successful February campaign behind us, we now turn our focus to human rights and the plight of the homeless for our special March campaign.

Lansdowne school has welcomed a new science lab with open arms.

On Tuesday last week, the lab at York Road Primary School was officially opened by UWC’s Science Learning Centre for Africa (SLCA).

The SLCA runs support programmes to improve the teaching and learning of science and mathematics and looks to facilitate learning by improving school infrastructure and providing spaces for learning.

Five centres were opened last week, bringing the total to 45 centres since the SLCA’s programme started in 2004.

“This is a fantastic day for our school,” says school principal Colin Isaacs.

the labs will go a long way to improve the overall interest in science. He says they were introduced to all the projects the school was involved in while busy with training ahead of the launch of the labs last year.

The project is a joint venture between UWC, the Garden Cities Archway Foundation and the provincial education department.

Science teacher Mark Oglive says he is excited about the prospects of the lab.

“The year before last when we took part in a science competition, we heard we would be receiving a lab and then they started renovating the old science lab,” says Oglive.

It can hold 40 pupils and features five stations with rotating tables and workspaces.

“Before the lab we were doing experiments outside and in the classroom on benches that was not ideal, but we had to

make do. We had some science equipment, but we had to make do with bottles or other stuff where we did not have the right tools,” he says.

Despite this hurdle the school won the science competition, which gained them recognition and, inevitably, the science lab.

Oglive teaches with a passion for science, a passion he now believes will be passed on to his learners in the lab.

“The lab allows the learners to get engrossed in science. We want to inspire them to go into the field of science because we need more scientists,” he says.

Mark Kleinschmidt, councillor for the area, says the lab may help them discover the next great scientist will come from the area.

“The lab is one step for York Road but a giant leap for the community of Lansdowne,” he says.

Policing the police – 700 days in MONIQUE DUVAL @monique_duval

s complaints against police officers across the Western Cape continue to mount, one man believes building bridges between the police and communities is the first step towards addressing the problems.

After spending just over 700 days as the first ever Western Cape police ombudsman, Advocate Vusi Pikoli provides an interesting insight into the root causes of a breakdown in relations between police and the communities they serve.

Pikoli was appointed in December 2014 and one month later the office of the provincial police ombudsman was opened and started taking complaints. Tasked primarily with investigating complaints of police inefficiency and the breakdown of relations between a police station and the surrounding suburb’s residents, Pikoli says starting the one-of-its-kind government department has been both challenging and exciting.

Right to question With no precedent, Pikoli says he sought guidance on how to best execute this oversight role mainly from the constitution and the provisions in the Western Cape Community Safety Act. He says while relations with police in many areas are strained, this cannot be tackled without taking into account the historic role of police during apartheid. He says as society’s perceptions about the police change, many issues, such as

service delivery, have arisen.

Pikoli believes all South Africans have the right to question service delivery and get a mechanism for raising their concerns.

Pikoli says at first his office’s relationship with the police had left much to be desired but as time went on, it improved. Today, he says he is happy with the cooperation received from police when complaints arise.

Questioned on what role the shortage of police resources play in the complaints lodged with his office, Pikoli says it is a prominent theme in complaints. However, he believes how the resources are being managed is the more important aspect to focus on.

“Inadequate resources cannot be used as an excuse for non-delivery.

How these resources are managed is important.”

60% of complaints done Since inception, the police ombudsman has received 825 complaints. He says 481 complaints have been finalised while 344 are still under investigation.

Pikoli explains there is a wide variety of complaints but the most common complaints relate to poor communication between police and complainants. This is followed closely by complaints of unacceptable behaviour by police towards complainants.

According to the statistics, Delft Police Station topped the list with a total of 36 complaints lodged against it with the police ombudsman.

Adams was sentenced in the Cape High Court last year after he broke into the house of his ex-girlfriend and forced her and her child to go home with him, where he raped her, beat both of them and eventually killed her child. According to a statement by the national prosecuting authority, the woman escaped Adams’ house before her son was murdered. She sought help from Kuils River police, but, despite having a protection order, they refused to help her.

Pikoli explains some of the common mistakes people make when lodging a complaint is confusing the role of the police ombudsman with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. The police ombudsman does not investigate cases relating to police officers who may be committing crimes.

Instead, this office deals with service delivery complaints against police, which includes officers not providing feedback, police failing to open or register a case or not going to a crime scene after being called.

Mediation brings change Pikoli believes police inefficiency should never go unchecked as it could, like in this case, result in someone’s death.

He says while the police ombudsman has the authority to make recommendations, police officers are not legally bound to these decisions. Asked whether this could be considered a legal loophole for police, he says the answer is simple: “In many cases we find that when there is a breakdown in relations, all that is needed is mediation.”

Pikoli believes a lack of leadership is often the cause of strife between police and community members. But, he says, with mediation and guidance he has witnessed a significant change.

Pikoli and his team are embarking on mass outreach projects to educate residents on the role of the police ombudsman.

Art to dock in harbour

Energy flows through us, it connects us to others, it keeps the lights on, helps us get to work, and transports our food.

Now an art exhibition, titled Puncture Points, at the Cape Town harbour will explore how this energy intersects our lives every day. Fifteen local artists will create this connection in an interactive way and through a diverse mix of art forms – photography, sculpture, silk-screening, dance, poetry – during the exhibition, which runs from Sunday 12 to Friday 25 March.

Khanyisile Mbongwa, curator of the exhibition, says the harbour is a “puncture point” – a critical distribution centre that impacts daily on our lives. “There is a coming and going, arrivals and departures: A constant flow of energy,” he explains.

“Therefore, it only makes sense for society to meet at this critical puncture point to interrogate and explore the intersections of energy through the creative interpretation of our artists.”

The artists were selected based on their proposals for the theme “Where energy meets the everyday”.

They are Brett Gendall, Conor Ralph, Faatimah Mohamed-Luke, François Knoetze, Lesiba Mabitsela, Jarrad Ricketts, Joce Engelbrecht, Louise Coetzer, Meghna Singh, Bongani Njalo, Nawaaz Saldulker, Nomusa Mtshali, Oscar O’Ryan, Sanele Moya and Zika Crowned.

“Ultimately the Puncture Points project will provide a platform for local artists who are at different stages in their careers, to showcase their work and add their voice to the critical conversation around the connection between energy and society,” says Mbongwa.

Help police find shooters Athlone police are investigating a shooting incident which took place in Bridgetown last Saturday.

According to Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman, police officers received a complaint of a shooting at the corner of Sycamore Way and Kweper Road at 23:30.

“On arrival they found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his left leg.

“According to the victim, he was with his two friends when he was approached by three unknown men and they asked them where they stayed. They then told them that they were gangsters and cocked a firearm and shot the victim in his leg,” says Norman.

The victim was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital by his mother and uncle.

An empty cartridge and one live round were found on the scene.

Norman confirms that a case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation.

o many, Keith “Brood” Philander will always be remembered as a prolific striker who graced soccer pitches across the Cape during the 1980s.

Settled in Heideveld, Philander passed away last Sunday after a battle with emphysema.

The married father was laid to rest at Plumstead Cemetery on Saturday. His funeral was well attended by members of the soccer fraternity, friends and family.

Philander and his three brothers – Johannes, Clive and Peter – have lain a soccer foundation in the province.

His sister, Lilly Ford, says her brother excelled despite being uprooted from his place of birth. He became a soccer icon who was respected on the turf and feared for his fast pace and deadly volley drives.

Born in Queens Road in Woodstock, Philander attended Chapel Street Primary School before his family was forcefully removed and relocated to the Cape Flats in 1970.

He played his first match for Glenville in the Cape District Football Association league. As a junior he was liked by many a supporter for his agile soccer skills.

Philander joined Heideveld’s Saxon United and was a sought-after striker. He moved to Chelsea Football Club.

He attended Cathkin High School in Heideveld and was elected as a provincial striker. He stood out amongst his peers with his creative ball maneuvers, scoring more than a thousand goals in his career.

Philander moved to Santos and soon became a household hero in the Western Cape.

In 1979 the youngster from Heideveld was promoted to the Lightbody’s Santos professional soccer team. He won various major

Keith Philander trophies, including the old Maggot Competition, Rapport, Cape Flats football association league cup and multiple soccer awards.

He played for Jamestown, Cape Town Spurs and Glendene too.

In his later years Philander played for Celtic Football Club over 45s and impressed many opposition players with his ball skills and composure.

Former teammate, childhood friend and professional soccer legend Keith Verkuil says Philander was a creative soccer player with the instinct to turn the game around in his favor.

He was also a soccer mentor at Mountview High School in Hanover Park, supporting Boebie Cassiem at Sports Stepping Stones.

Volunteer to help at church event

brahiem Wydeman hopes that a piece of land near to his home in Surrey Estate will find a use which will benefit the community.

The vacant property, found between Kareedou Road and Venster Street, has been fenced off, but it has not stopped people from using it as a dumping ground.

Wydeman says that he first approached his local subcouncil office in 2013 to address the issue, but to date has not yet found any answers.

“I spoke to the previous subcouncil four years ago to try and get them to sort out the problem of that land. Nobody worried about that piece of land until the guy who lives on the corner came to me one day and said that his backyard is connected to that land. He investigated and found (dead) cats and dogs, which created a stench, which people just dumped there. He also said that when he spoke about it to the neighbour, his neighbour said that there was a time years ago that they found a body on that piece of land,” says Wydeman.

He adds that he is re-addressing the issue with newly elected councillor to the area, Aslam Cassiem, after previously dealing with Junade Hoosain.

“We had two meetings in 2013. I suggested to them to get that piece of land developed as a recreational facility for the youth. They told me that they will get back to me. The next time we had a meeting, they brought in a guy from provincial government, from their planning department. He told us that the strip of land cannot be utilised for construction, because there is a sewerage line which runs directly under it,” says Wydeman.

Residents in Surrey Estate are at their wit’s end about what to do about the open land between Kareedou Road and Venster Street, which has subsequently been used as a dumping ground.

PHOTO: EARL HAUPT Wydeman adds that the piece of land is an eyesore and more than that, a health hazard.

“It brings about flies, mosquitoes, rats and other health hazards so why don’t they put up a netball court for the children or volleyball on the other side of the land so that the children can play there?”

He also says that an agreement was reached with the City, provincial government and the residents that the land was going to be split in half between the properties who find themselves adjacent to the open land.

The understanding was that once the land was divided, that they can develop the land themselves, he says.

Cassiem confirms that he has spoken to Wydeman and that he is delving into the history of the matter.

“I have requested to look into who holds custodianship of the erf in order to hold the relevant department liable for the state it is in. I have also attempted to pick up from my predecessors documented proof of their progress regarding the erf. In this new term, different officials are running the subcouncils as well. Together with the office of the mayor, we have requested the second new sub council chairperson to check the records for any recorded history and progress regarding the leasing of the land to the abutting residents.”

The Youth Transformation Africa (YTA) organisation is calling on young people to volunteer at its event at Athlone Stadium on Monday 17 April.

According to YTA’s spokesperson Merentia van der Vent, they expect about 21 000 youngsters from all Christian church denominations to attend the event, which is aimed at transforming the lives of the young at heart.

Kyle Driver, chairperson of YTA, says the focus is on young people “as more than 70% of South Africa’s population is young”.

He says: “God gave me a vision to see young people shaken in our nation, to see us change this nation.”

Driver says the only solution to the current scourge of violence, gangsterism and drugs “is to present the gospel of Jesus Christ to young people and for them to embrace and live it”.

Driver has asked churches and youth groups to support the YTA campaign.

Van der Vent adds that a similar event, which took place at Newlands rugby stadium in 2015 , attracted more than 28 000 – mostly young – people.

“This year, 400 volunteers are needed to help on the day of the event at Athlone Stadium,” she adds.

Two hundred people are also needed for a choir and auditions will also be held for a band.

Kids count sheep at play park Learners of the Mustadafin Foundation’s early childhood development (ECD) centres enjoyed an outing to Bugz Playpark in Kraaifontein last Wednesday.

It was the first school outing of the year for the 367 children, aged between two and six, from Manenberg, Delft and Khayelitsha.The excursion also included lessons on the various animals at the petting zoo.

“The beautiful summer day was perfect to spend outdoors

with the children. Educational activities that allowed the youngsters to learn about different animals such as sheep, rabbits and ducks took place throughout the day. Most importantly, they were taught how to look after the environment,” says Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, Mustadafin Foundation director. “Most of the children come from disadvantaged areas; we endeavour to teach them in a fun environment and run excursions throughout the year.”

Retreat resident who waited more than 50 years to play with a symphony orchestra will soon have his wish come true.

Reggie Dreyer (74) was denied the chance to play because of apartheid law. He is set to perform Piano Concerto no. 23 in A, K. 488 by Mozart with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) at the Artscape Theatre Centre’s lunch hour concert next Tuesday.

This Mozart classic was the very same piece he auditioned with the orchestra in 1960, but due to apartheid legislation the orchestra could not offer him a place. “Well, it’s been a long time coming. This has been always my dream since I was young but the judges couldn’t listen at that time. So much has happened and it’s all now water under the bridge. I’m looking forward to playing and I’m

so happy about it,” he says.

After three children and seven grandchildren and with old age taking over gracefully, he always knew that one day his dream would finally come true.

“I’m looking forward to it. One of my daughters is coming from London to see me perform; this means a lot to me. Music has always been my forte. When you get older things change and priorities change. I’m fortunate to be able to do this. I have always hoped that it would happen and soon it will happen,” he says.

“I’m an organist at my church. I love all sorts of music but classic has always been my favourite. It has a way of soothing and calming me down. I really enjoy it.”

Last year, he was urged to contact the CPO again and he was offered the chance to audition again.

Also on the bill next week will be 12-year-old Qden Blaauw from Parow who will play the slow move-

ment of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C, K. 467, known as “Elvira Madigan”.

Louis Heyneman, CEO of the CPO, says: “With Qden Blaauw the youngest and Reggie Dreyer at the upper end as soloists in the free lunch-hour concert in Artscape’s chandelier foyer, there’s no doubt that the two organisations are creating a space for everyone.”

Under the direction of Brandon Phillips, the orchestra will also play a variety of light orchestral pops.

Artscape CEO Marlene le Roux says the concert series ties into the theatre complex’s objective. “Artscape’s theatre doors remain open to patrons and stages open to performers who were denied access in the past. Artscape also recognises the immense challenges facing the youth of today, inclusive of socioeconomic issues. Through our programmes we can assist in resolving some of these challenges.”

Peek at local designs A new website dedicated to showcasing locally made craft and design products is being launched by the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) today.

The website, where you can search for and connect with crafters and designers, is free to use.

The website has been piloted since August last year with small businesses and currently lists over 120 businesses and showcases over 630 local products.

CCDI executive director Erica Elk believes the new platform, called Peek, will open up access to new markets for the many small craft and design businesses in South Africa.

According to Elk, Peek provides a platform for SA’s creative businesses to showcase their work to a countrywide and global audience. While it is not a trading platform the website links to busi-

nesses’ own websites and eCommerce sites.

“One of the key challenges for small businesses remains access to markets. With technology, however, we have the opportunity to bridge the divide and create new ways for beautiful local products to reach local and international buyers and consumers,” says Elk. The CCDI is a non-profit organisation with 15 years of experience growing local creative businesses, Elk explains. Over 2200 businesses make direct use of the CCDI’s services yearly.

“Peek will enable many business that have constrained local market opportunities in their towns and cities to access a much larger audience and consumer base for free.”

Peek is not a curated website and so its unique value is the diversity of the range of products

and aesthetics, she adds.

“There is something for everyone on this site.”

Small businesses have unique challenges like lack of capacity, skills, skilled staff and resources such as funding, equipment, technology and market access, making it necessary for intermediary organisations such as the CCDI to provide support, Elk adds.

“It is through the work of designers that a local contemporary aesthetic and local innovation emerge that are much more sustainable than a reactive response to external trends.”

Creative businesses can sign up for the Peek website by registering as a business member on the national database at www.ccdi.org.za. Once registered, Peek is free and businesses can load their products on it themselves.

hildren of an Eastridge educare have taken steps toward taking ownership of their play park.

The children who attend Wiggles and Giggles Educare started a water recycling project last week that saw them using grey water to water the play park opposite the educare.

Principal Adeley Davy says she saw the need to create the project as part of teaching the children about water-saving techniques.

“Our park desperately needed to be watered as it wasn’t watered for months now due to the water shortages,” says Davy. “As the principal I came up with the idea that we need to make a difference.”

She first introduced the initiative to the educare’s older children in the four to fiveyear age group. They each brought a bottle of bath water to the educare on Wednesday last week. Although they did not cover much ground, the children enjoyed themselves while wetting the lawn.

“We saw that the 17 bottles did not make a big difference because we can’t really wet the park with that little water,” she says.

From this week they will extend the project to the 40 children at the educare.

They are encouraged to bring a bottle of their bath water with them.

“That is 40 bottles every day. We need to take ownership because this park is for everyone,” says Davy.

She urges other residents to get involved in using their grey water to water parks.

earching for a job has become easier, as a multilingual booklet on job-hunting is rolled out at libraries and museums.

In celebration of International Mother Language Day on Tuesday, Anroux Marais, provincial minister of cultural affairs and sport, received the booklets published by the Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (SBA).

The booklet is aimed at empowering those who are looking for employment and it is available in all three official languages.

Dr Niel le Roux, the foundation’s CEO and member of the Western Cape Language Committee, distributed the booklet in a committee meeting last year.

He requested the department help in distributing more copies of the booklets through libraries, archives and museums.

Together with Marlene le Roux, SBA chairperson, he officially handed over the booklets to Marais and her department as the custodians of multilingualism and knowledge centres in the province.

“Often, too many people underestimate the importance of affording space for self-improvement in one’s mother tongue and today we celebrate this significance by accepting these multilingual booklets. This handover shows in real terms that together we are committed to empowering all those who are looking for employment, as it is available in all three official languages,” says Marais.

“The department will make a concerted effort to assist in distributing more copies of the booklets through our information centres such as libraries, archives and museums for a wider spread.”

group of happy hookers have a passion for keeping the community warm during cold winter months.

Before you go running off to the vice squad to report a house of ill repute note that these hookers use crochet hooks and knitting needles to ply their trade of goodwill.

The group we are talking about are the Hookers and Knitters of the Southern Suburbs, a gathering of women who meet once a week in Oakridge. They’re making blankets for a special cause.

“We’re also known as the Wooligans,” says Florence Reddy, from Grassy Park, as the ladies start retrieving balls of wool and the blankets they are busy with. The other important activity is the first glass of champagne or wine to get the evening’s activities going.

“This is also part of the fun of this group with a glass of wine to keep the crocheting and knitting going, even though we have a few non-drinkers in the group.

“If you’re looking for somebody to blame for all this fun for a good cause, blame Nelson Mandela.”

The group met three years ago when they were taking part in a project to make 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and just “clicked”.

Luisa Pearson from Oakridge, at whose home the women gather, explains that after that first meeting they enjoyed the companionship so much that they wanted to keep going.

“It grew from meeting once a month to every week,” she says. “Making the blankets is so important but it’s the good company that plays a big part in our activities.”

Ruth Ely from Grassy Park says: “It’s important that we do these blankets for those who need it in our communities. We are also about giving people new skills and go out to companies to teach people how they can knit and crochet to make a difference in so many lives.”

Sandi King from Rondebosch adds that their aim is to encourage people to knit or

crochet blankets and to donate them to the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day project.

“It is most rewarding being involved in an organisation which knits broken lives together,” she says.

“We also encourage people to join us when we host a knitathon where we make as many blankets as we can on a day.

“The next one will be this Saturday at the

Kaleidoscope Market in Toffee Lane, Claremont.

“This will be a wonderful opportunity for people to pop by to donate handmade blankets, squares or wool or to just simply sit and knit or crochet a square or two.”

Careful comment Conversations can be fun if you pay careful attention to the interesting doors that the conversationalists open with some oft used phrases.

There’s always that ending “Just ask Johnny!” they say after some interesting titbit of conversational gossip.

“Stop right there,” I interject and call on said Johnny.

“Why are you calling Johnny?” says the baffled conversationalist.

I then have to explain to them that it was their request that we ask said Johnny for his expert witness. In most cases poor Johnny does not know what the hell he was supposed to have witnessed.

Try it at the next gossip session, it’s lots of fun.

Then there are those questions that have no anwers.

“Why are those people across the road always revving their cars so loudly?”

Be quick and start explaining about Henry Ford the American industrialist, the founder of the Ford Motor Company, and the sponsor of the development of the assembly line technique of mass production.

Be very serious about his humble beginnings in County Cork, Ireland, and how he left the farm to go to America but by this time be prepared for shrieks and shouts of horror from from the person who asked the question.

Beware of getting thumped with nearest appliance if the question was from a spouse or partner.

I also love doting mothers.

They agonise for hours about their loving care for their children (mostly those early teenage years and sometimes even into their 20’s).

“I can’t sleep if my children are not at home,” sighs the soulful Mom. “It can be any time of the night but I don’t feel good if they are not at home.”

That’s when I ask if The Guinness book of Records can be called in.

“Why?” ask dearest mother.

“Your son has been accepted to Harvard next year so you will have to stay awake for about four years!” says I happily.

Is economic activity above our citizens?

There were two printed responses to my letter “Who planned for the water to run out” of 7 February; one by Hilary Page who saw the common sense in the fact that the more residences you have, the more demand there will be on the water resources.

The other letter was from Dr GA Keen which states that the City of Cape Town has planned for its future water needs; it’s just that they have not shared this information with the people who pay their salaries.

While he outlines some of the planning initiatives which the City has undertaken, he misses the key point that we are running out of water now.

This surely reflects on the planning process as all factors (including the possibility of drought) should have been considered, including emergency resources.

The fact is that we are not ready (and will not be ready for some time yet) to deal effectively with the current situation besides asking households to cut down on their water usage.

During one of his afternoon shows over the past week, John Maytham of Cape Talk Radio stated that he did not believe that construction and development should

be slowed down or halted because these industries use a lot of water. A resident had called in or emailed to voice his concern that a construction company had used an attachment to a fire hydrant (this is perfectly legal if arranged with the City).

It appears that the view of the City and some of its residents is that economic development and its water supply should get preference over ordinary citizens when it comes to implementing water restrictions. While we realise the importance of economic growth, should construction development activity proceed unabated even if this means there is no water left for people to drink? If this contention is wrong, could we please hear from the City the kind of water restrictions which have been placed on industry and construction in particular, eg. have their water rates been increased proportionately to the amounts they use as with ordinary ratepayers?

Dr Keen unfortunately did not address the matter of comparative rainfall, dam levels and population figures for the same periods in previous years. I believe that these are critical questions.

Geysers are the worst water culprits Being in the water heating industry for the past 14 years we have come to the conclusion that geysers are responsible for millions of litres of water being drained on a daily basis. Manufacturers and authorities should pay attention to this.

In one instance a hospital drained away 5000F every third week to have heating elements replaced.

Since replacement with this technology

three months ago they experienced no element failures necessitating water to be drained.

A conversation with a technical manager at one of our hotel groups revealed that they regularly drain 7500F of water due to element replacements.

Available technology can prevent this wastage.

They’re Mamils of menace It is becoming rather amusing to read Paul Szymusik’s letters in defence of cyclists.

I invite him to be on Beach Road – the Mouille Point stretch – on any day of the week, but especially Saturday and Sunday mornings, to witness how cyclists flout the rules of the road.

Pedestrian crossings mean nothing to them when the traffic light is against them and they ride through in their bus with impunity.

Children, grandchildren and the aged attempting to cross do so at their own peril but have to give way to these Mamils (middle-aged men in lycra).

It is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt. Perhaps their cycling through a red light at a pedestrian crossing may also be due to ignorance of the road.

In reply to Paul Szymusik’s letter of 21 February he states that “Two riders riding abreast (this is road legal) make it safer for them...” Have the rules changed and, if so, when?

I would like to point out the webpage of Arrive Alive – Cycling Rules of the Road and Road Safety. Rule 311 states: . Persons riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle and two or more persons riding a pedal cycle shall not overtake another vehicle at the same time. . Whenever a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion of such road.

I’ve often seen cyclists riding on the road when there is a safe cycle path built especially for them; perhaps they like living dangerously?

Warning to water wasters As Cape Town has only 121 days of water, the City of Cape Town has published the locations of the top 100 water consumers.

As of yesterday (Monday) dam levels have dropped to 33%.

With the last 10% of a dam’s water mostly not being useable, dam levels are effectively at 23%.

Consumption is at 837 million litres of collective use per day, which is above the revised water consumption target of 700 million litres per day.

Regular enforcement operations remain in place, says Mayor Patricia de Lille.

The average household uses about 20 000F per month. This would be less than 1000F per day. High users are using much more, with some over 50 000F per month.

Granville’s groove grows Top jazz acts at Oude Molen

G

ranville Michaels may have grown up on the dusty streets of Grassy Park but his music is taking him to some of the top stages in South Africa, and he’s back in town to give music lovers a taste of his talents.

The youngest of six children, the music influences started early in his life.

“My late father Isak had an amazing voice and used to entertain his friends in our yard,” he says. “While my father sang, I suppose my real influences were the gospel sounds at the time. I was a big fan of the REAL Sisters, with whom I later toured – not performing but getting a taste for life on the road.

“I was also into the jazzy side of things with so many groups around town at the time but my real favourite was Jonathan Butler.

I got the chance to perform with him at what was the Nico Malan in 1996.”

During the 1990s he was a member of the gospel group Enco’Rage before going solo and eventually winning the Best Male Vocalist award at the Hope SA awards in 1997.

“These were some exciting times for me,” he says. “[Eno’Rage] made it to the TV recording on Shell Road to Fame in 1995 in Johannesburg and we were excited to all fly for the first time.

“I sort of fell in love with the scene up there and moved there in 1999 to start performing for Barn-

Local music lovers will have the opportunity to catch Granville in action when he hosts a concert in the Bergvliet High School auditori-

um on Saturday 11 March.

“The friends and family who caught some of my performances on television have always been nagging me,” he laughs. “But I just did not have the time. Now the time is right because my mother is celebrating her 80th birthday and I want to honour her and all the sacrifices that she made over the years.”

Featuring with Granville in this concert will be Crushanda Forbes, the Cape Community Choir and the Short Notice band.

The first versions of these films were screened on 10 000 farms across South Africa where screenings were followed by voluntary health checks. hat do you get if you mix the music of Black Eyed Peas with John Lennon’s?

According to one of his fans, the answer is Nur Felix.

The Athlone-based singer and songwriter says he thought the description, given by someone on Facebook after watching one of his performances, was interesting. He, however, describes his music as “soul folk, reggae with poetry”.

Nur Felix will be launching his new music video weekend.

That’s exactly the sound one can expect from his single “We Are all We Need”. He’ll be launching the free-spirited music video for the song at A Touch of Madness in Observatory on Saturday.

The video, with its different views of the Mother City, was shot by another fan, Hayden Plath.

“We met at a gig of mine and he told me after the show that he really wanted to shoot a music video for that song.”

The result is a cinematic piece that shows off the beauty of the city “without ignoring its economic and racial dynamic”, with scenes shot in Noordhoek and Gugulethu.

Highlighting issues that affect Capetonians is something that comes naturally to Nur during his song-writing process.

“I don’t write songs the conventional way.

If a song wants to come through it just does,” he explains. He picks up his guitar when inspiration hits and usually the lyrics follow the melody.

Nur sees it as his calling to write music that unites people and inspires positive change.

“There’s so much sadness and negativity in the world. But there’s also lots of happiness and good vibes.”

In fact, it was the response from listeners that pushed him to pursue a musical career.

As a child, Nur says he would make up songs in his head.

“It was my escape from the world around me.”

He started learning to play the guitar at 17 and wrote his first song after learning just two chords.

By the time he finished school, Nur simply couldn’t picture himself behind a desk doing a regular job, so he started performing at open mic nights and community events. Soon after posting his music online he got a phone call out of the blue from a woman who’d found his number online.

“She was in tears and told me how the song had moved her and inspired her to want to make a difference in the world.”

That’s when Nur realised: “My music is not about me at all, but about a larger, more important message that the world needs.”

Since then Nur’s musical journey has been filled with “amazing moments”, like the opportunity to write the score for the documentary The Cape of Lost Lullabies.

It’s also special for him to hear about his music moving people this and “when thousands of people are singing along to my song’s chorus”.

Nur has just finished working on a song with a songwriter from Canada for which he recorded the learners of Manenberg Primary School singing.

After his video launch on Saturday, Nur will be focusing on finishing his full-length album. He also has a couple of shows lined up with his bassist Spencer Mbadu and drummer Michael de Wit. “I’m looking forward to this year.”
