T
he Lansdowne Community Police Forum (CPF) will elect three new members soon after resignations. The positions of chairperson, secretary and assistant secretary have all recently become vacant. CPF spokesperson Ashraf Kenny confirms the three members have resigned. “After much consideration and discussion between CPF structures, police and the members concerned, the executive took the decision to move forward [with an election] as soon as possible, as being stagnant would be counter-productive to what we have been elected to do, which is to serve and represent this community,” Kenny says. Lansdowne police spokesperson Sergeant
Nkululeko Mnyaka says the reasons for the resignations are unknown to the police. Current CPF deputy chairperson Yvonne Adams is acting in the position of chairperson until the election next month. Adams says the election will be facilitated by the department of community safety. “The department was informed from the beginning and will be present to facilitate the election,” Adams says. The election will be held in accordance with the CPF constitution. Mnyaka says the CPF needs the right person for each position. “We need a community-orientated person with the understanding of uniform constitution for community police forums and boards, who has strong written communication skills and interpersonal skills and is able to work with the community, resolving
community issues pertaining to crime and criminal activities,” Mnyaka explains. Adams agrees. “We need someone from the community who knows the problems and the precinct. Other areas differ vastly and the [preferred candidate] must know the way this precinct works,” she says. Adams explains that the election will only be for the three positions and that any existing executive members who want to stand for election of the vacant positions would need to resign from their current posts. Althouh only organisations have voting rights, Mnyaka says residents should get involved in nominations: “The community is encouraged to participate in this very important process to ensure that a strong CPF can be established. All community-based organisations have voting rights and must reg-
ister with the police,” he says. Last year 16 organisations voted at the heated election (“New Lansdowne Forum elected”, People’s Post, 6 December). Now five months down the line, the group will get at it again. Residents, business owners and organisations who are not part of the CPF are urged to participate and register with the police. The policing precinct covers Lansdowne, Wetton, Ottery, Freedom Park, Greenfield Circle, Turfhal Park, Woodlands Park, Kenwyn, Rondebosch East, Crawford, Belthorn, Penlyn Estate, Mountview and Rylands exits three and five. For more information or application forms phone Mnyaka on 021 700 9050. V The Lansdowne CPF election will be held on Tuesday 5 May at 19:00 at the Shukrul Mubeen Madrassah Hall in Ahmadeyah Road, Lansdowne.
