School upsets granddad

fter submitting an application for his granddaughter to Southfield Primary School, Paul Phillips says he felt the school discriminated against children from Parkwood.

Phillips says he went to the school recently to hand in an application form for his grandchild to enrol in Grade R in 2018 but, according to him, felt discriminated against as a school official said it “does not cater for Parkwood”.

“On Wednesday 18 January I visited the school to submit the application for enrolment for Grade R for 2018 intake for my

granddaughter at the secretary’s office. Accepting and noticing while filing the application that our application is still early, I noticed only a few applications in the file. I requested from the lady an indication of a possible date of response on the application as to pay the registration fee timeously,” Phillips explains.

Phillips says he was asked which area his grandchild was from.

He says the response was what offended him – he was told that Parkwood was “not their area”.

“I was totally surprised at the response given. I paraphrase her response: ‘Parkwood is not our area.We first have to cater for children from the Southfield area, their friends

and family’,” Phillips recalls.

School principal Bevil Velensky refutes Phillips’s allegations of discrimination.

He explains the school’s admission criteria: “With our admissions we first cater to siblings of pupils or past pupils of the school.

Then we also cater to the people who are, so to say, on the doorstep of Southfield Primary School.

“Saying we do not cater to Parkwood is untrue as currently we have a makeup of 9% Parkwood pupils at the school.”

He says Phillips’s application was not rejected when the form was handed in.

Phillips and Velensky confirm they held a meeting yesterday morning to address the issue and come to an amicable solution.

“I have spoken to Phillips regarding our admissions criteria and apologies were exchanged with regard to the experience. Going forward we will communicate to our applicants what the admissions criteria and processes are,” Velensky says.

Phillips says addressing the matter directly with the principal was fruitful.

“I am glad I was able to air my concerns to and with the principal.

“I do understand the dynamics with regard to admissions, but I do, however, disagree with some of the criteria for admission at all public schools. I still feel this needs to be looked at again as public schools should be open for anyone to apply at,” Phillips says.

arious media and social media reports have claimed Capetonians have only 100 days of water left as the City of Cape Town council looks to tighten water restrictions.

Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy, did not confirm the reports directly, saying the City “does not expect to run out of water before the next rainy season”.

“The impact of such rumours is difficult to determine. What is clear is that we have the ability now to turn this situation around. And we will only be able to do this if water use is reduced and members of the public help us to do so,” says Limberg.

The City has been recording water usage of around 800m litres per day more than the target. Collective consumption for the week ending Sunday 15 January was up to 890m litres per day. This is up from 859m litres per day the previous week, and is 90m litres per day above the target.

More staff to fix leaks NICOLE MCCAIN @nickymccain To ensure that not one drop of water is wasted in the city, extra staff members are being appointed to find and fix leaks.

Twenty extra employees have been hired to beat water leaks, with the City of Cape Town looking to add another 24 first-level responders to the team.

The 20 staff members have been employed to help water inspectors across the city to “assist in the prompt identification of and attendance to leaking infrastructure and improve public awareness”, says Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for informal settlements, water and waste services and energy.

To create water awareness, the City also employs around 1000 workers yearly through the expanded public works programme, Limberg adds.

“The City has established itself as a national leader in reducing water losses (as well as user demand), through its water conservation and water demand management programme. According to the latest information (October 2016), it is estimated that 8.6% of total water fed into the City’s reticulation network is lost through leaks, bursts, and to a much less significant degree, overflows on storage tanks,” she explains.

“Given that the City operates a network that would stretch from here to Australia, water losses and leakages will never be completely eliminated. Cape Town’s water losses are considered to be well within range according to international best practice.”

Water loss (which includes losses through leaks and bursts as well as water “lost” through meter tampering, general metering inaccuracies and administrative errors) in the overall system has been reduced from around 25% in 2009 to below 15% according to latest data, Limberg says.

“This is the effect of various interventions, including extensive water pipe replacements, as well as extensive pressure management of the water supply system.

These interventions have also reduced the burst rate from 64 bursts per 100km of piping in the 2010/2011 financial year to 31 bursts per 100km according to the latest statistics, saving millions of litres of water.”

The City has numerous programmes in place aiming to save water in the city, Limberg says. The City’s water savings efforts were recognised internationally when its water conservation and water demand management programme won the Adaptation Implementation category in the C40 Cities Awards in 2015, she adds.

“Our replacement programme is an ongoing project for the water and sanitation department and involves repairing and maintaining old water mains. This programme helps to improve service delivery as new pipes minimise pipe bursts and water disruptions. We’ve installed special pressurereducing valves at key points in the network in order to reduce water pressure in designated water zones. It is estimated that 42 000kF – the equivalent of 17 Olympicsized swimming pools – of water is saved every day through the pressure management programme,” Limberg says.

“It is also crucial that those who waste water are held accountable, and key to this is residents reporting contraventions,” she adds.

Become a water warrior As the dam water levels continue to decrease Capetonians are urged to save water.

It is expected Level 3B water restrictions will come into effect from Wednesday 1 February.

In a bid to spread the word about saving water, local radio station Smile 90.4FM has started a public group on Facebook, named Smile Water Warriors, as a platform for people who are committed to combatting the water crisis can come together and pledge to make every drop count in their own households.

Smile programme director Clive Ridgway says: “Our job as broadcasters becomes more meaningful in times when vitally important messages have to be conveyed and listeners have to be mobilised to do the right thing.”

The radio station will broadcast dedicated water reports daily and give updates in news bulletins while the drive show’s Maurice Carpede and Bailey Schneider will be highlighting concerns and initiatives relating to the water crisis.

The breakfast show’s Bobby Brown and Lindy Hibbard as well as workday presenters Eloise Pretorius and Benito Vergotine will be contributing regular features to the campaign.

“According to our projections, dam levels may reach 20% if current rates of water extraction continue. This will result in a low margin of safety as it is difficult to abstract the last 10% of a dam’s volume,” she says.

As of yesterday (Monday), dam levels were at 40.4%.

The level of rainfall expected for the winter season remains uncertain, according to forecasters at the South African Weather Service’s Cape Town office.

In the most recent seasonal forecast prepared by the its climate prediction department, there is high uncertainty of rainfall between now and April/May. A forecast for later in the year has not been made yet.

This means it is not clear whether the southwestern parts of the province will get below or above normal rainfall. The rainfall maps give a 33% probability of above normal at the same time as a 33% probability of below normal for the region.

Forecasters have deduced, based on this, that the probability for rain is low although possible.

‘Bully’ teen in sex tape scandal CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen

T

he teenager seen bullying a peer in a video that went viral last year has now been caught up in a sex tape scandal.

People’s Post reported on the teenager from Parkwood who bullied another learner (“Video bully says sorry”, 18 October 2016). The teenager apologised for her deed days after the video was shared and came under intense scrutiny in social media.

Barely three months later, the same teenager is seen in another video in which she records herself lying next to a couple presumably having sex.

The teenager is seen sticking her tongue out at the camera and heard repeating phrases from the viral bully video before she pans to the couple in the background.

The couple then urge her to stop taking the video. She eventually does, after a few expletives and inaudible talking.

Officials of the provincial social development department say they will intervene after the video again spread virally.

Albert Fritz, provincial minister of social development, says they will be approaching the police with the matter.

police to investigate a matter involving three alleged minors recording themselves involved in sexual acts, and posting it online. This act could constitute the production and distribution of child pornography, and could bring psychosocial harm to the minors involved,” Fritz says in a statement.

Fritz further states it is “important to remember that these are minors, and the law enjoins us to always act in the best interests of children”.

“The department has arranged for its social workers to make contact with the minors and their parents. They will assess the children to determine an appropriate level of assistance to the children and their families in terms of the Children’s Act. Part of our interventions will include raising awareness on the health and legal risks of children engaging in sexual activities with each other, even if it is perceived to be consensual,” Fritz says.

The department has appealed to the public not to keep viewing or sharing the video online, saying it is a contravention of legislation aimed at protecting children, such as the Film & Publications Act and the Children’s Act. “We also appeal to parents to be aware of their children’s online activities, and take necessary steps to educate and protect them,” Fritz says.

The con artist adds a cellphone number and email address to the fake advert and posts it on sites such as Gumtree and OLX. “Once the deposit and first month’s rent is paid, the scamster vanishes,” he says.

There may be relief on the cards for poor pensioners who rent from the City of Cape Town.

The mayoral committee has recommended that the City council approve changes to how the City charges rent from poor residents who rely on state grants for income.

The proposed amendment comes after national government announced an increase in the state pension in October last year. The grant increase would push some residents who owe the City into a higher income bracket. This would see them having to pay 8% of their monthly income to rent instead of 5%, explains Stuart Diamond, Mayco member for assets and facilities management.

“These increases are substantial and our lower-income recipients of state grants are now finding it even harder to make ends meet, particularly in the current tough economic climate,” says Diamond.

The City’s credit control and debt management policy makes provision for help to the most poor residents.

The proposed amendment will ensure that the rental for single pensioners will remain at 5% of their income, while those who have spouses who are also grant recipients will continue to pay rent of 10% of their combined income.

Taxi driver helps arrest gunman CHEVON BOOYSEN

A

taxi driver was brave enough to chase after a suspect and assisted in having him arrested on Monday last week – even after the criminal pointed a gun at him.

Philippi police spokesperson Captain Lance Goliath says the 28-year-old Hanover Park man was arrested in Grassy Park at about 19:30.

“On Monday a man of Donegal Court was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. This [arrest] comes after the suspect boarded a taxi at a shopping mall in Ottery, travelling to Hanover Park.

Close to the traffic department in Ottery the taxi driver stopped with his taxi to [off-load] two men as they refused to pay their taxi fare,” Goliath explains.

They then threatened the taxi driver with a firearm.

“One of the men then pulled out a firearm from the side of his pants and pointed the firearm at the taxi driver. The taxi driver quickly went on the defence and managed to disarm the suspect. The suspect then fled in the direction of McDonald’s in Ottery,” Goliath says.

The taxi driver gave chase and “caught the man who in turn tried grabbing the firearm back from the taxi driver and, in the struggle, wounded himself in his ankle”.

“Assisted by a local security company the taxi driver managed to keep the man under guard until police arrived.”

Police seized the 9mm Vektor pistol with ammunition and a magazine and arrested the man.

The serial number of the firearm had been filed off.

He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Goliath says further police investigation found the man was also wanted for questioning in a murder case in Hanover Park.

“The murder was committed earlier this month in Athburg Walk, where a 43-year-old man was shot and killed.”

The investigation continues around the illegal possession of the firearm and ammunition as well as the murder. . In another incident, a 25-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and drugs.

The Hanover Park man was arrested in Grassy Park on Tuesday at about 19:15, says Goliath.

“Officers of the Mitchell’s Plain tactical response team followed up on a tip-off received from the public.

“Officers proceeded to a house in Louw Avenue where they searched the premises and found a man pushing a white box underneath one of the wendy houses on the premises,” Goliath explains.

Officers then approached the man and the white box was taken out and opened in his presence, Goliath says.

Police found a black 9mm Ruger pistol with two magazines and live ammunition, mandrax and dagga.

Police also seized an undisclosed amount of cash.

The investigation continues around the illegal possession of the firearm and ammunition as the serial number was still intact.

ith their firstborn starting his first day of school and being the first Down’s Syndrome child to start mainstream public school in the province, it was a day of many firsts for the Jonkerman family.

Alonzo Jonkerman is five years old and started Grade R at AZ Berman Primary School yesterday (Monday).

With much excitement his parents, Melissa and Alfonzo, walked their son to his class. With no tears or protests he happily greeted his

teacher and new classmates.

Alfonzo says they are happy the day has arrived.

“The process took a long time. It is a very big process to get a Down’s Syndrome child into a mainstream school because you have to go through the teachers, the governing body, the principal and the parents and all of them have to say yes.

If one says no the entire process stops,” he says.

The process took about six months, he says.

The school psychologist started the process with an evaluation of Alonzo.

Alfonzo says they asked him if he wanted to send his son to a special needs school. But because he believes his son is on par with other children his age, they are determined to send him to a mainstream school.

“He was being mainstreamed at the daycare where he was and he was doing well,” he says.

His hope was to have Alonzo interacting with other able-bodied children his age.

Alonzo is described as a lovable and caring child, always going up to people and hugging and kissing them.

“Able-bodied people can learn a lot from people with Down’s Syndrome. They are very loving and they forgive easily. For us and his siblings – they pick up things from him,” says Alfonzo.

“He is also a ladies’ man,” says

Melissa.

Alfonzo says it was not always smooth sailing.

“When he was born we were dumbstruck and did not know what to do, but on the day he was born our bishop, Bernie Lutuli, visited us and told Melissa to ‘take the blanket off that child, you don’t need to be shy. Let the world see him.’ That was so powerful because we wanted to hide and protect him. We did not want anyone to know,” says Alfonzo.

“Lots of people still believe [many negative] things about it but he made it very clear to us that this was a gift from God. He said to us: ‘God gives special children to special parents.’ And that made us strong.”

Alfonzo says the most important things “special children” need are love and attention.

“Don’t hide your child, you must protect your child but take your child and expose him to a normal life and give him lots of love,” he says.

Alonzo has also paved the way for others like him, both at the school and Smiling Faces educare that he attended. Both facilities have already accepted another child with Down’s Syndrome since.

“We just want him to live a normal life and go onto becoming something and earning his own salary. We will always be there for him but we don’t want to see him

in an institution, he can live a full life,” says Melissa.

Alfonzo agrees. “There are many things they will not be able to do

but we want him to be able to do things on his own. I want him to matriculate and be educated and know right from wrong.”

Tourism numbers soar This summer holiday has brought a record number of tourists to three of Cape Town’s top attractions.

The preliminary figures for visitor traffic at Cape Town International Airport and at the city’s major attractions in December last year have been released and show that Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Groot Constantia and Cape Point enjoyed a record-breaking month.

Kirstenbosch experienced the most visitors in a month in December, with almost 118 700 people visiting the garden.

This is a 6% increase on the previous December. The second-best month in Kirstenbosch’s history was December 2014, in which it received almost 116 990 visitors.

Groot Constantia saw 79 000 visitors this December – an increase of 25% on December 2015. Its visitor numbers for the entire year increased 5% with 437 000 people visiting the historical vineyard.

Cape Point celebrated its millionth visitor of the year in December (“Most visitors ever to Point, People’s Post, 13 December 2016). The month held a second record, as 129 039 visitors brought a 15% increase on the previous December.

Its second busiest month was in October, with 113 709 people visiting Cape Point. The total visitors last year reached 1 095 270,

23% more than in 2015.

Both Robben Island and Table Mountain saw an increase in visitors as well.

Robben Island Museum recorded over 49 738 visitors to the island over the festive season – 4% more than in December 2015 (“Ferries help record numbers to island”, People’s Post, 17 January).

Table Mountain received 150 201 visitors in December (the same as the previous December), which brought the total number of visitors last year to 1 102 189.

The airport’s arrival figures also soared, with the airport announcing that it had achieved the milestone of 10m passengers in one year for the first time.

Tourism organisations cited locals preferring to stay within South Africa in December and the exchange rate, which remains favourable for international visitors, as contributing to the good results, explains Enver Duminy, Cape Town Tourism CEO. “The figures represent an enormous boost to the city’s economy during December, as well as an indication that the growth potential in the tourism sector remains positive,” he says.

“While it’s still high season, with plenty of visitors still to arrive, we’re confident that the 2016/2017 holiday period will be one of the city’s highest ever.”

Crack down on street racing T

he rollout of dashboard cameras in traffic vehicles should make prosecution in reckless and negligent driving cases much easier.

This as the City of Cape Town’s ghost squad continues to put the squeeze on illegal street racers as the unit conducts weekly operations in hotspots for illegal street racing.

These hotspots include Ottery, Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Grassy Park, Milnerton, Bothasig, Belhar and Bellville South.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security and social development, says during 2015, officers recorded 27 000 offences.

These offences include 234 reckless and negligent driving arrests, 638 drunk driving arrests, 988 fines for unlicenced drivers and 42 arrests for other crimes.

“We have seen a reduction in the prevalence of illegal street racing which is due in part to our ongoing enforcement efforts but also the robot racing events at Killarney race track that allow car enthusiasts to race against each other on a track instead of the street,” Smith says.

However, Smith says, as the statistics show, they still have a massive challenge with those who insist on turning public roads into a dangerous playground.

“It’s a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, because they change locations regularly as well as the days of the week to try and throw us off, but our officers stay on the prowl and are usually able to spoil the party,” he says.

Smith says it has long been a concern for the traffic service that many of the illegal racers are young people using their parents’ cars without their knowledge.

“Even more concerning is the number of instances where minors are found in cars participating in races, often with their older brothers, fathers or cousins,” he says.

Smith calls on parents to do some serious introspection on why they would allow their children on the road in their cars, not just behind the wheel but also in the back seat.

“If people were more accountable for their actions, we wouldn’t have to babysit them and could divert our resources elsewhere,” he says.

Paving the road for cyclists Affordable bicycles, safer cycle lanes, more cycling facilities and a bicycle manufacturing plant are just some of the proposals in the City of Cape Town’s draft cycling strategy which aims to get more cyclists on the road.

The draft cycling strategy aims to increase the percentage of commuter trips made by bicycle from the current 1% to 8% by 2030. Currently cyclists have access to at least 450km of cycle lanes across the city, some of which are separate from the road, says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

“Although some of these lanes are popular for recreational cycling, we still have not seen the growth in commuter cycling required to have a noticeable impact on traffic congestion,” he says.

“We evidently need a new approach, together with some key interventions from both the City and the private sector, to realise our goal to increase the percentage of commuter trips by bicycle to 8% within the next 13 years.”

Research carried out last year included surveys of cycling movements at 50 locations across the city, an assessment of the available cycle facilities, a review of accidents involving cyclists, and engagements with stakeholders, says Herron.

“The data indicates that about 1% of all trips in Cape Town are made by bicycle.

In addition, despite the popularity of recreational cycling and participation in cycling events like the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour, the uptake of utility cycling remained stagnant for the past decade.”

The surveys confirmed that more than 500 utility cyclists cycled to work in the morning peak period.

“These surveys confirm that commuters either do or will cycle, but that the majority of residents cannot afford bicycles.

Given the fact that low-income transport users in Cape Town spend up to 45% of their monthly household income on transport, while the international norm is between 5% and 10%, cycling is an affordable alternative – provided that we improve access to bicycles in these communities,” says Herron.

The cycling strategy identifies options to improve access to affordable bicycles, including employer programmes to buy and maintain bicycles, a bike-share system or a lease scheme for local trips and student travel, donations and bicycle distribution programmes.

“Some of these challenges provide us with a golden opportunity for growing our local economy should we succeed in cultivating a cycling culture. For example, we want to explore the possibility of establishing a bicycle manufacturing plant in Cape Town that can build and provide low-cost bicycles for low-income households. Such an investment and a bike-share system will lead to job creation – but then we need our residents to take to the streets and to start a cycling revolution,” says Herron.

“For cycling to become the norm, we need a network of well-designed cycle routes and appropriate cycling infrastructure. Facilities such as lockers, changing areas and showers for those cycling long distances may be needed and in this regard private employers will play an important role in creating an enabling environment for those who want to cycle to work.”

Give hospital the gift of a facelift T

he Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch is in line for a facelift as a dedicated ambassador of the hospital calls on Capetonians to help buy the paint.

Children’s Hospital Trust ambassador Greg Bertish has collected over R94 000 in donations. Sponsors and supporters have donated in celebration of the hospital’s 60th anniversary.

Bertish, a big wave surfer and former South African stand-up paddle board and surf lifesaving champion, launched a new appeal for more sponsors to come on board yesterday (Monday).

The 46-year-old father has undergone two open-heart surgeries and can still relate to the need for a little bit of optimism and a dose of inspiration when it comes to recovering during a stay in hospital.

He explains that he started working with the hospital and provincial health department last year, calling for sponsors for a painting project.

“The painting of the hospital will take at least 10 weeks and involves so many more intricacies and processes than I ever could have imagined,” he says.

“However, we’ve had incredible supporters and sponsors step forward as well as very generous donations from the public, which have allowed this dream to become possible.”

While the provincial government regularly maintains the hospital, this community-driven initiative will ensure that the thousands of patients who are treated at this hospital each year have an even more homely and appealing place to stay, Bertish adds.

Funds raised through the Children’s Hospital Trust will go towards buying the paint as well as the professional services needed for the project.

Louise Driver, Children’s Hospital Trust CEO, adds that they are very happy with his initiative.

“We are overwhelmed by the unbelievable generosity of sponsors as well as donors who have contributed financially to this mammoth project. A task such as this one often involves all sorts of unforeseen costs, which is why the support of the public is always greatly relied upon.”

Shooter hands himself in A

n 18-year-old man has been arrested for shooting a Metro Police officer.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says three Metro officers came under fire when they responded to a shooting in Athwood Road, Hanover Park two weeks ago.

“Officers returned fire and in the process a 40-year-old constable was shot and wounded. The constable sustained gunshot wounds to his stomach and left hand. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” Van Wyk confirms.

The car in which the officers

were travelling was shot at and damaged.

JP Smith, Mayco member for social services and safety and security, says another officer was injured by broken glass and a third officer, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, was not injured.

Shortly after the incident, police launched an integrated crime prevention operation in order to stabilise the Hanover Park area, Van Wyk says. “Police brought in several suspects, of whom four were positively linked to crimes for which warrants of arrest had been issued,” Van Wyk says. The four

have appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

Several drug dens and homes of alleged gang leaders were also raided during the manhunt.

“Tik lollies and dagga were among the items seized at a wellknown drug outlet in Turflyn Walk, Hanover Park. Vehicle checkpoints were also set up,” Van Wyk says.

An 18-year-old man, accompanied by his legal representative, handed himself over to the Philippi police on Thursday evening, claiming that he had shot at the Metro Police officers earlier in the day.

Set for safer soccer season GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz The recent winner of the Telkom Knockout Cup in the Premier Soccer League, Cape Town City Football Club, is partnering with taxis in the peninsula to win the hearts of soccer fans.

On Saturday the club launched an initiative at the Mowbray interchange where taxi drivers apply for a loyalty card that gives them special treatment for home games at Cape Town Stadium.

Julian Bailey, spokesperson of the club, explains that the name Cape Town City still has a place in the hearts of many soccer lovers in the Cape.

“We might be the new boys on the scene but there’s a legacy of the name that we have to uphold,” he says.

“Our success in the Telkom Cup meant that there is a lot of interest in the club and part of our aim to build up our support base is to find ways to make it easier, and safer, for our

ape Town mayor, Patricia De Lille, has announced the new Mayco committee which includes several new individuals.

According to a statement, the City of Cape Town is implementing an Organisational Development and Transformation Plan (ODTP) in terms of the legislation in order to reverse the legacy of apartheid spatial planning, modernise government, improve service delivery, and become more customer-centric.

The ODTP comes after extensive research and reflection on the work that the City has done in the past five years where they “have interrogated the way (they) work and now have to aggressively enhance service delivery and the connection with customers, especially the poor”, De Lille says.

Cape Town is one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa and this means the City has to address urbanisation, De Lille says.

In the past five years, the City has spent more than 67% of its budget in poorer areas as confirmed by the national treasury who noted that the City was “overly generous” in its provision of free basic services.

“I will, however, be the first to admit that a lot more has to be done to improve the living conditions of the poor and to redress the imbalances of the past,” she says.

The ODTP is a legislative requirement when considering local government legislation and regulations, specifically the Municipal Structures Act and the Municipal Systems Act, De Lille explains.

The ODTP will be incorporated into the Integrated Development Plan to outline the organisational requirements needed to give life to strategic planning.

Theatre makers Michaela Faria-Richards and Robert Shenton have combined Dahl’s absurd twists with the dark wit of Lemony Snicket to create a new “deliciously dark” version of the classic Grimm tale Little Red Riding Hood.

Dahl’s version is strange enough, ending with Red Riding Hood acquiring a wolf skin coat. For The Woods, Michaela says: “We take it a smidge further”.

The writing pair originally wrote the piece to use as a fundraiser last year and will be staging it again this week for the Masque Theatre’s New Talent Festival.

This time round they’ve had more time to polish the production since the first take of The Woods had to be put together in just two weeks under tense circumstances.

They had just finished working on Romeo and Juliet: Sort of when Michaela heard of a cancer patient in need of financial assistance and offered to help.

With an idea about wanting to play with classic fairy tales, she “tearfully” turned to Robert to help with a script after realising what she’d got herself into. Taking inspiration from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, Robert says “I decided to take Red Riding Hood, put our own spin on it and write entirely in prose.”

He was on a conference in Johannesburg though and wrote from his hotel room at all hours of the night, between sending stressed out messages to his director. “I was literally dreaming in rhymes.”

He arrived back in Cape Town a week and a half later, but The Woods still needed an ending and a cast. The pair says the experience was a serious test of their friendship.

“I was this close to moving to Canada,” Robert jokes.

In the end, The Woods ran for two nights at The Galloway Theatre, raising R16 000, be-

fore Michaela and Robert decided to take a break for a year or so... until Michaela saw an advert for the New Talent Festival.

She’s very excited about the cast for this run. The Woods now features the “cute and feisty” Katie Swanepoel as Red, Robert as the “slimy” wolf and the “amazing” Mike Fenn as the lumberjack. “He does this ‘D’oh’, Matthew McConaughey kind of thing. He’s really funny,” Michaela muses.

Llewellyn Van Der Berg and Ryan Devilliers are the Grimm brothers with Alex Devilliers as the granny.

Michaela is equally excited about the prospect of performing at the beautiful Masque Theatre where they’ll be playing with stunning lighting a new set. “It’s very exciting to do it for such a big theatre,” Robert says.

The Woods will be on stage on Wednesday and Saturday, but it joins three other original productions for the festival which runs this week. “There are going to be so many talented people who are going to be performing at this festival,” Michaela says. “The tickets are so dirt cheap. Never in your life have you seen quality work for 60 bucks.”

She points out The Masque does a good job of providing a platform for newcomers to the industry and says the festival offers an entertaining and affordable night out.

Also on the festival line up are the improvised one-hander Bucket List and a double bill from Massive Productions: Inkungu ngaphantsi kweNtaba (Cache underneath the Mountain) and ISIKO (The Tradition). This year will also feature dance pieces, namely the double bill Misodzi / Tears and Tapera Baba, along with the theatrical exhibition Colovr.

The Woods will be back at The Galloway Theatre on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 February, before moving to Franschhoek later in the year.

Young artists wanted Bridgetown Theatre Company is looking for young performers to take part in youth events planned for this year.

Last year the company joined forces with Bridgetown High School to perform at The V&A Waterfront’s annual High School Band Slam, the Grand West High School Jam and Artscape Cenrtre’s Schools’ Arts Festival and High School Drama Festival.

They hope to do the same this year with young dancers, singers, rappers, actors and musicians between the ages of 12 and 25.

The young performers will take to the stage for the first time at the Waterfront

in March to perform We strive 2, before presenting the musical Kaleidoscope at the Grand Arena in August.

The group will also produce their own play for their performances at the Artscape Drama Festival in April and their Schools’ Arts Festival in August.

Rehearsals will be held Saturdays from 12:00 to 14:30 from Saturday 4 February.

You can’t drink a green lawn As we’re about to head into the hottest month of the year, the latest figures revealed by the City of Cape Town’s department of water and sanitation yesterday show that dams supplying the Cape with water are only about 40% full.

Various reports that the Cape only has sufficient water for the next 100 days have surfaced over the past week. City officials have tried their best to refute these reports – saying we in fact have enough water to last until just before winter – but when you do the math there is in fact not many more than 100 days left before the start of winter.

At the same time, residents have been lashing out at the City over “too harsh” water restrictions (which are about to become even stricter), penalties for using too much, and even accusing the City and big industries of not doing their own part.

And while both the City and residents may have a good leg to stand on, it is now time to drop the “why should I bother if...” and “it doesn’t apply to me” attitudes and focus on the crisis at hand.

It doesn’t matter who is right or wrong.

The question you should be asking is: “What am I (not your neighbour, the City and industry) doing to save water?”

Change starts in your own backyard. If everyone can save one drop, then soon we’ll have buckets. Imagine what we can achieve when we stop waiting for everyone else to start doing something and focus on how we can contribute ourselves.

Those ignoring the restrictions because they can “afford whatever penalty the City can throw at them” or have been sneaky to get around the restrictions by switching their sprinklers on in the middle of the night – you’re not doing yourself a favour.

After all, you can’t drink a green lawn when the taps have run dry.

I for one have taken the difficult decision (on top of all our other water saving measures) to not fill up my swimming pool until after we’ve had sufficient rain – a decision I may come to regret in February, but one I’m willing to live with if it means clean drinking water every day.

‘Watch your own water usage’ In reply to City spokesperson Priya Reddy’s wagging a finger at recalcitrant ratepayers’ use of water, I suggest that the City of Cape Town looks at its own record of preserving this vital commodity.

We have had at least eight burst water mains in Lakeside in the last few months. Why? Because the city has done no maintenance for oh so many years!

A recent burst pipe in Bryn Road had water running down the hill into Mez Wallach Old Age Home for more than 10 hours – a veritable Victoria Falls. It was only attended to by the municipality in

the afternoon.

I would like the City to ascertain how many thousand kiloliters were lost in that break alone.

It would be good if the ratepayers’ association could insist on the City paying for all the water wasted, before winging about the ratepayers’ use of this commodity.

What is my ten kilolitres/month to the City’s thousands of kiloliters?

As Reddy says “Every drop counts” – well not as far as the City is concerned!

As a ward councillor, I continue to receive reports of residents hosing their grass verges and lawns – some as early as 03:00 in the morning to avoid prosecution.

Please act responsibly where your

domestic water consumption is concerned.

Obviously, those residents with boreholes and wellpoints register these and follow the policy applying to them as per the Level 3 water restrictions.

Toeriste kom hier om vakansie te hou en gee nie om hoeveel keer per dag hulle stort of bad nie.

Die storte in gimnasiums behoort na 5 minute outomaties te stop om te verhoed dat mense te veel water gebruik.

Ek het van die vrae op hul webtuiste geplaas en die antwoord was dat waterbeplanning oor ’n tydperk van 20 tot 30 jaar gedoen word. Hulle het egter nie gesê of daar so ’n beplanning in plek was nie.

So in my leeftyd kan ek nie ’n verbetering verwag nie.

Alternative water sources needed As a garden lover living in our beautiful Cape Town garden city it is heartbreaking to see my garden slowly dying through lack of water.

Some of these plants cost in excess of R500 and nearly R750 with fertiliser.

Will the council compensate me for this loss?

I understand the need for water restrictions to safeguard the current water situation but let’s take a good look at the future situation.

If all the dams were full at the start of the dry season would this be sufficient to cover our current needs?

And if so how many more people could Cape Town accommodate before full dams would not be sufficient? Is the current situation a temporary once-off

situation or are there simply too many people demanding access to too little water?

Our water supply is finite so some clever mathematician could calculate how many water users the Cape could sustain if every citizen were allowed say one kilolitre of water per month from October to say April. It the population of Cape Town exceeds that figure then we will be lucky to have drinking water.

Israel have solved their water problems by desalination of sea water so if we want to survive, then the City council who works for us, better follow their example or Cape Town as we know it today, will become a desert.

Fine municipalities for water wastage If somebody gets a spot fine for using too much water then there must also be a fine for the municipality that is wasting water.

I would like to know how much water is wasted every time a pipe bursts and who is paying for this. If you use one kilolitre too much water then you’re penalized for this. I am sure for every pipe that bursts it is properly a couple of hundred kilolitres every time.

I have also read an article saying that

40% of water “disappears” to leaking pipes and taps that are not closed.

I want to know why the people paying for water are also the only people that is getting fined for using too much?

We are just soft targets and easy to get money out of.

Let us not start talking about the non-payers and why you get charged an ridiculous amount for sewerage.

Curbing religious freedom?

The closing date for public comments on the latest draft of the Prevention and Combatting of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill is fast approaching, which is 31 January.

Most South Africans are unaware of this legislation and its potential implications for freedom of speech and religion in the country.

It would particularly infringe on the constitutional right to freedom of religion and belief of ordinary citizens. Due to the broad phrases used in this document, it could mean that religious sermons and practices will be subject to frequent scrutiny in future. These may also even be subjected to government approval, to ensure that no harm results from it and that it offends no-one, both inside and outside of that religion.

This seems like a form of political correctness in which merely relaying unpopular things that are clearly stated in scriptures like the Bible for example, could be punishable by law.

This kind of criminalisation and censure is commonly found in communist and non-religious countries. Since when does the voice and will of man have greater authority than the Word of God? Is this yet another hindrance for God to be able to bless our country?

What is also of concern, is the short time period made available for public comment on this Bill, and the lack of public awareness campaigns on it.

Could this be interpreted as deliberate attempts to have only a small minority objecting, as it would easily give government the authority to pass it into law?

The vast majority of South Africans are actively practising different religions, and would no doubt have already objected to it, had they been made more aware of what it entails; and how they could go about lodging these dissatisfactions with Parliament.

Salute to famous busker From when I arrived as a member of the South African Railway Police to my early retirement as operational commander of the South African Police in 2008, I saw how to the east side of Table Bay Harbour became the world’s biggest tourist attraction at the V&A Waterfront.

At one stage I had an office just under the quayside of the amphitheatre. This is where I met huge but humble busker Abie Thomas. He and his small group performed day after day for twenty years.

Mr Thomas and his trumpet playing entertained thousands of visitors at the V&A Waterfront.

I used to drive in my police vehicle and stop when I saw this famous trumpet player playing and when he saw me he would, with his trumpet in a downward movement, greet me as he was playing.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind who saw Abie Thomas perform that he was beyond brilliant as an entertainer and a master on the trumpet.

We sometimes forget to honour a person that was a celebrity in his own right and Abie Thomas was a celebrity on his platform for twenty years.

I truly with all my heart believe, with his family’s permission, that a statue of this famous, great artist be put up next to the amphitheatre in the V&A Waterfront. There should also be place where visitors, in honour of this legend, can place donations to be used for whatever worthy cause is decided on.

I

n a story of rags to riches in the local sporting world, Lavender Hill Softball Club has moved from obscurity to one of the leading clubs in Cape Town.

The team already has fingers on the major league trophy, leading closest rival VOB by eight points, having played one game less.

In this weekend’s encounter with its archrival, the Heideveld Yankees, The Hill triumphed 6-2 to retain its 100% record this season.

Grivonne Rhoda was her usual best on the pitching rubber, facing 21 batters, giving up three hits and striking out seven batters.

Chaunees Goliath was equal to the task for Yankees, also only giving up three hits.

The Hill was more precise with its hits, turning them into runs on the board. Marlene Petersen, Chesternay Fortune (a double) and Jadine Davids scored the three hits for Lavender Hill. Natasha Abrahams (2-3) and Goliath (1-2) accounted for the three Yankee hits.

This season the Lavender Hills team has scored 124 runs and only surrendered seven. Nine of their 12 games were clean sheets.

It is well represented at school level, with four players who played for the all star schools team at the national schools tournament in December last year, namely Rhoda, Fortune, Erin Peters and Kelly Thompson. The four will also represent the Cape Town Softball Association at the Gordon Monk provincial tournament taking place in Gauteng next week.

This year sees the 25th anniversary of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge and the fight against cancer continues with the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

This popular golf tournament is a favourite among players of all levels and last year raised a record of over R4m for cancer research and education.

The tournament is growing in stature with each passing year, and Champion of Hope Ernie Els continues to inspire everyone involved with his personal recorded message played at the finals each year.

“The tournament just seems to grow and we have some exciting new initiatives planned for this year,” says Sanlam sponsorship manager, Gary van Loggerenberg.

“With club and regional finals last year we had around 40 000 golfers from South Africa and neighbouring countries trying to make their way to Sun City.”

Last year Louise Olivier from Bellville

won the C division and overall women’s division with Parow golfer Kim Uytenbogaard winning the B division.

It is expected that thousands of golfers around the country will again do their bit for cancer and enter the various qualifying tournaments.

Entries open on Monday for the club competitions and close at the end of March, with club competitions to be played from 1 March until the end of June.

The regional finals will be played between Saturday 1 July and Saturday 12 August.

The eagerly awaited finals for the 100 lucky finalists will be played at Sun City on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 October. A stern test awaits the players on the Lost City and perfectly manicured Gary Player courses.

The winners will be invited by Ernie Els to play a round of golf with him at Oubaai which the four-time major winner designed himself.

The tournament has raised more than R40m since its inception in 1993.

Younger brother Kyle Ripepi took over the pitching and conceded the winning runs in the eighth inning from four consecutive hits.

Crusaders used four pitchers.

Kyle van der Ross started but could not complete the inning. He conceded four runs by giving away four walks and two wild pitches.

He was replaced by Ashwin Kleintjies who

pitched 4.1 innings, conceding six runs while allowing seven hits, walking four and striking out four.

Jarod Williams threw the last four innings and struck out five Yankee hitters to keep Crusaders in the game. He conceded two further runs by allowing four hits and one walk.

Jared du Plessis (4/6) and Ashwin Booysen (2/5) were the Yankees’ best hitters.

The Yankees players and coaches would need to iron out the issues that have seen them lose six of their last seven games.

They are also feeling the gap left by Luwayne du Plessis in both hitting and pitching departments after he has not been available due to personal reasons.

A’s lose in twelve innings Poor hitting and fielding by the Athlone A’s allowed two-time defending champion Bothasig to win the game 6-5 in twelve innings.

In these twelve innings A’s only managed five hits, made five errors and left sixteen runners on base. Bothasig had twelve hits, one error and left eight runners on base.

After taking a fortuitous 2-0 lead in the first inning and adding another run in the third inning, A’s allowed Bothasig to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning.

Bothasig scored the three runs in the third inning on one down after a pop fly was

dropped by Mathew Diedericks at second base. Three consecutive hits later and the game was tied.

Bothasig took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning while A’s conceded three hits and a walk.

Bothasig extended its lead when the leadoff batter Nicholas Eagles got on base from an error by shortstop Lee Marks.

Kyle Botha hit a two-base hit to left field so Bothasig could have runners on second and third. Dayle Feldtman then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the run.

At the top of the ninth inning, being 5-3 down, A’s got three hits off Jared Elario to tie the game at 5-5.

The score remained like this until the bottom of the twelve inning when Bothasig scored the winning run.

Dayle Feldtman (5/5), with a sacrifice fly, was Bothasig’s top hitter. Diedericks (2/5), including a walk and an intentional walk, did well for A’s.

Bothasig used four pitchers who conceded five runs from five hits. They walked twelve and struck out sixteen hitters. Lloyd Stevens and Carl Michaels did well for A’s, conceding six runs, allowing twelve hits, one walk and striking out six hitters.

Giants lose to Bellville A stellar pitching performance by Bertus Mostert (seven innings, one run, five hits,

one walk and five strike outs) paved the way for a 9-1 Bellville victory over the Maitland Giants in Bellville on Saturday.

Mostert’s only blemish was conceding a home run to Jayde Thorne for the Giants’ only run in the fourth inning.

Thorne’s home run tied the ballgame in the top of the fourth and created some panic in Bellville’s dugout.

Bellville responded immediately with one run in the fourth, three in the fifth and seventh and their last run in the eighth inning to take the game away from the Giants.

Damian Williams (2/3), Kyle Etisch, Wesley Greed and Clayton Manuel (all 2/4) did well for Bellville.

Brad Erasmus (2/4) was the only Giants hitter to look comfortable.

Callan Pearce replaced Mostert to close out the game.

Giants used Canadian Jas Shergill for his mandatory five innings. He conceded five runs from eight hits. He was replaced by Erasmus for two innings and Thorne for one inning.

In the other major league game Durbanville beat VOB 11-2.

In the promotion league, log leader Van der Stel beat Battswood 18-13, bottom of the log Thistle beat Devonshire Rovers 13-8, and Helderberg Pirates beat Milnerton 13-0.

“Because it is winter in England now, we can only train indoors so I wanted to play somewhere where it was summer to be better prepared for the English season.

At the same time Ottoman was looking for a bowler. I look forward to bowling outside and bowl at full pace here because in England training is indoors at the moment. Playing in this heat and these conditions will do a lot for my fitness and will be good for my game back home.
