he collective known as #GangsterismMustFall picketed outside the offices of the Department of Social Development (DSD) in Wynberg on the morning of Thursday 23 June in demand of youth programmes.

The purpose of the picket was to highlight and advance the plight of youth in communities such as Lavender Hill, Parkwood and Ocean View who are affected daily by gangsterism. The picket was attended by about 30 people – mainly the youth.

Roscoe Jacobs, convener of the collective, says they will continue to advocate for youth programmes to prevent and disengage youth

from joining gangs.

“We will continue to fight issues that perpetuate gang violence. We will ensure the challenges our youth are facing, are addressed. We can’t watch and sit when things go wrong; issues have to be addressed.”

The group also handed over a memorandum to a social development representative.

In the memorandum they stated they want issues of drugs and youth unemployment addressed, and to have more youth programmes so that there is no room to join gangs. “We want funding to start programmes to keep the youths off the streets.

Tough socio-economic conditions are the main challenge faced by the youth and they end up joining gangs. We believe if we also tackle these other challenges from grass-

roots level, we will win the fight against gangs. Youth development is needed.” #GangsterismMustFall gave the social development department seven days to respond.

Albert Fritz, provincial minister of social development, confirmed they received the memorandum, however, his department “refuses to be drawn into a political game with aspirant fringe politicians”.

“Our priority remains delivering services to all communities in the province. It is unfair on the vulnerable segments of our society to be deprived of key DSD services whilst vested interest groups disrupt services. The department recognises the democratic right of citizens to protest peacefully and bring their concerns to the attention of govern-

ment. However, among the group of about eight adults protesting, about seven children (most of school going age) were also seen (during school hours). There can be no excuse for using children and disrupting their schooling to fight community and/or political causes,” he says.

Jacobs has lambasted Fritz’s claims, saying they are non-political. “That is a frustration coming from the department. We want issues addressed. We lobby for communities and we want safe communities. We will continue to campaign and not politicise the plight of the people,” he says.

The movement says they will continue to make their voices heard and to fight for the youth.

They are planning a bigger march soon.

Elders make change A

74-year-old neighbourhood watch patroller, a retired nurse who collects and sorts breadtags in aid of wheelchairs for those who cannot afford it; an 84-year-old who spends his Saturdays assisting with soccer training for youth at risk; the founder of a children’s home who works with HIV patients in townships; an 85-year-old that organises a group to knit items for children in hospital, and a grandmother of nine who ministers to her peers at an old age home.

These are just a few of the amazing nominations received so far for the first People’s Post SpecSavers Community Champions Elders Awards. The awards aim to honour elders who, despite their age, are still going out of their way to make a difference in the lives of others and continue to service their community.

Elder citizens from anywhere in the Cape who are making a difference in the lives of others can be nominated in two age categories – 70-80 and 80 plus. Nominations for the awards close on Wednesday 20 July. A panel of judges consisting of representatives from SpecSavers, SA Care Forum, People’s Post and its sister publications, TygerBurger and City Vision, will select three finalists in each category.

Finalists will be notified by 15 August and will thereafter be featured in People’s Post.

The winner in each category will be announced at a special High Tea held on 1 October on International Older Persons Day.

The overall winner will win two nights stay at the Garden Route Game Lodge including breakfast, dinner and game drives (valued at R6000). SpecSavers will sponsor their transport to the lodge. At People’s Post we want to make Mandela Day (Monday 18 July) a special one for the children at Patricia’s Home of Hope in Vrygrond – and we want our readers to be part of the celebration.

The facility is part of the Eniwe Children’s Fund whose mission is to improve the lives of abandoned and underprivileged children through various housing, feeding and skills development initiatives in the Western Cape.

People’s Post is taking the words of Nelson Mandela to heart when he said: “Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

At present the home in Vrygrond cares for 13 children (eight boys and five girls) with ages ranging from 2 to 15 and our readers can help us help them with some of their needs.

To feed these children costs R7000 every month and while cash donations are welcome, People’s Post wants to assist with grocery donations – like

samp and beans, pap, split peas, lentils, canned foods, vegetables, pasta, pasta sauce, juices, milk, butter, jam. There is also a need for shampoo, soap, toothpaste and sanitary pads.

Donations of warm clothes and shoes (new or second-hand) for the children will also be welcomed.

There is also the need for some handy hands and building materials for improvements to the home’s kitchen and bathroom.

Some windows and door frames need to be replaced, tiling or flooring for the facility needs attention. A new bathroom suite, hot water geyser and painting will also add comfort. The facility is also looking for a new or second-hand fridge in good working order and a washing machine to hold a bigger than normal load.

There are also plans for some extensions to the building to allow for more living space.

Bucket of Joy creates hope CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen

C

hanging the world, one bucket at a time.

This is what the non-profit company Bucket of Joy believes their mission is when filling buckets with treats.

Tasneem Jacobs, project co-ordinator at Bucket of Joy, says they have been able to raise funds to fill 4000 buckets this year.

“The buckets that are filled will be donated to children who are fasting for their first time this year. Each year we donate the buckets to children who fast full days for their first time during the holy month of Ramadaan,” she says.

The concept, which started at the Parkwood Mosque, has grown so much, Jacobs says, that they have been able to reach as far as Atlantis and informal settlements in and around Cape Town.

“The initiative in it’s first year had only 100 buckets, but over the years we have been privileged enough to grow with our donors and the buckets can be filled with treats for the little children. Now we are standing at 4000 buckets,” Jacobs beams.

Last year they were able to fill at least 3000 buckets.

Jacobs says she became involved with the NPC four years ago when she received a WhatsApp message from her mother with the donor appeal.

“In the message people were asked to donate to the cause, and this is an issue that is very close to my heart. I knew immediately that I had to get involved,” she says.

“In less than a week after sending that message out to friends, I was able to collect about R10 000 in donations.”

Every year, the buckets are sorted and arranged at the Parkwood Mosque on the corners of Blackbird Avenue and Walmer Road.

“We have volunteers that come and help us pack the buckets every year as it can take about three days. “:Every year we have some people coming in drips and drabs, but every little helps and we are so grateful for those who are able to help us. I received a message from a pensioner who said she would be more than happy to come and help us prepare the buckets for distribution,” she says.

She adds another organisation, Bridging Hearts, has also been helping with a database of volunteers who come out and help prepare the buckets for distribution.

Jacobs says this year they have added a new community to their distribution beneficiaries.

“On Saturday we will be handing out buckets in Khayelitsha and we are looking forward to it,” she says.

ife in South Africa is not without its challenges and the new generation of future leaders need courage to make that positive contribution to the future.

An organisation helping to instil that courage is MOT South Africa, a registered and leading public benefit and non-profit organisation specialising in life skills development among the youth.

With its programmes the organisation works with the youth in a structured learning environment, teaching young people to make conscious life choices that will enable them to develop to their full potential and to show courage.

MOT hosted its annual general meeting in Pinelands last week and it was obvious that the project was making a major difference in the lives of young people across the peninsula.

Wanda Moller, CEO, explains that their training programmes give young people the strength to manage peer pressure, to believe in themselves and to take responsibility for their own lives and future.

“MOT (pronounced “moet”) is the Norwegian word for courage. We focus strongly on the development of self-confidence, sound values, positive attitude and behaviour, self leadership and to resect and care for others,” she says.

When some of the participants in the programme shared their experiences, it was easy to understand why the activities are a stepping-stone to success and empowerment.

Amanda Qamngana, a student at College of Cape Town’s Wynberg campus, explains that it was difficult to put the experience in a nutshell.

“I am one of the young people who face many challenges in life, but after I went to the Young MOTivators training camp, I came back a different person,” she says.

“It has changed my life because now I am hungry for success, I am hungry for change and I want to be good in everything I do.

“I’ve learned the importance of making my own choices with the courage to care and courage to love in a warm, safe, loving and fun environment. I met crazy but very smart individuals.

“I am an introvert and I was so scared about how I was going to cope with meeting lots of new people, but I had the greatest time ever.”

Pumela Mahleza, a Grade 10 learner at Buren High School, speaks about how the programme gave her the opportunity to embrace others.

“The programme helps you to reflect on who you are as an individual, as a person and how you embrace others,” she says.

“It also helped me to adjust to high school better and gave me confidence to try and better myself in my school work. After I was in a car accident, I went through physical and emotional trauma, which caused me to close myself in.

“MOT gave me a chance to re-evaluate my life and learn to live with new values.

I have a sister who looks up to me and the programme has allowed me to be the best role model to her and my peers.”

H

is passion and drive sees him on a steady rise to the top.

Yuzriq Meyer (24) went from home on a couch to an influential radio presenter with a steady social media and radio following.

His show on Bush Radio sees him on the airwaves from Monday to Friday hosting and producing his own show called the Breakfast Rush.

The Woodstock man recalls his journey as a calling.

“After I completed my journalism diploma I was at home for about three months before I started asking ‘what am I going to do now?’,” says Meyer.

“I was at an internet cafe looking for jobs and saw the advert from Bush Radio looking for interns. It was fate because the deadline was in two days’ time, so I got my CV together and applied.”

This was in 2014.

Meyer recalls being inappropriately dressed and not very confident in himself.

“There were 80 other people and I didn’t think I would get the job, but by the glory of God they liked my energy at the interview. A week later I got the internship,” he says.

The three-month internship saw the trainees undergo an extensive training in everything to

do with radio.

At the time, there was no breakfast show at the station and this saw Meyer and two others be the first to host and produce a show from 06:00 to 09:00.

“We started the show in April 2014. Last year I started doing the show on my own and was able to bring in more elements that represented me,” he says.

The show has since seen a surge in interest, especially with daily guests.

He recalls thousands of interviews since the show’s inception and has had the opportunity to feature many dancers, artists, DJs, actors and other influential people in the community.

“I was always very talkative and had a flamboyant energy which meant I was always happy to express myself. I was very into music in high school and to me someone had it made when their music was on the radio. When I started here, my perception changed,” he says.

He says radio is his calling and he is fortunate enough to be working at a community station, being community driven himself. “I wanted to give people a platform to change their lives,” he says.

Meyer has recently started a stint at CTV as a presenter as well.

“I always wanted to be on TV but since I started at Bush, my love for radio is greater,” he says.

With his social media following growing by the day, Meyer says he did not expect this response.

He has always been a motivational speaker and encourages young people to follow their dreams. “Some people who follow me on social media may think this looks like a glamorous life, but they don’t understand that all that glitters is not gold. You must have passion and confidence and be willing to sacrifice,” he says.

Meyer hopes to move on to bigger and better things in future.

“I want to do what I am doing now but on a bigger scale where I can reach a bigger audience. I have big love for Bush Radio and CTV but with a bigger fan base I can change more lives. It is not about the fame for me, but rather the opportunity to change the fabric of society and the way they think,” he says.

oger Johnson (20) has been in the streets for four years with his siblings because they had to leave home as their parents were alcoholics.

Johnson sleeps at Kenilworth Centre and he says life on the streets is no joke.

“It’s very difficult to be on the streets. You don’t know where your food will come from or where you will sleep.

“Being at home was even more unbearable because my parents didn’t care and that eventually drove us all out. At least on the streets you get people that help you here and there but it’s not easy,” he says.

Johnson is one of the people who were

helped by Storm Arnold from Grassy Park who spent a few hours sleeping outside to help the homeless.

Arnold spent Friday and Saturday night sleeping on the corner of Rosmead Avenue and Wetton Road in Wynberg, acting as a homeless person, to raise donations for the homeless (“Braving the cold”, People’s Post, 7 June).

His initiative, #fillmeup for the homeless, is a call to anyone who can help with clothes blankets or non-perishable foods that can be given to the homeless.

It was a cold evening on Friday but Arnold said it was all worth it.

“I’m feeling so cold. I’m shivering but I know by being here I will help someone. I’m not worried about being cold because I know

after a few hours I will go back into my house which is warm. What about those that have spent years on the streets with no warm clothes or warm food. By doing this only for a few hours I know I will be able to help,” he says.

While on the street, Arnolds recived blankets, non-perishable food and money from people that were asking what he was doing and they were willing to support it.

“I’m so overwhelmed by the support that I’m getting. People are curious and when I tell them what I’m doing they dip in their pockets and help.

“I prefer doing it this way than knocking at people’s doors or approaching companies because it will take a long process. With companies or shops they will tell me to write a letter and send it to their headquarters. At least if I’m here I will be able to help quickly without following all the channels,” he says.

Arnold says he will be packing the blankets nicely and writing the names of the people that donated.

“I want the homeless to be filled with the warmth and love. I want them to know when they receive the blanket such a person thinks about them because I will put the names of the people who donated on the pack,” he says.

People from different areas also joined Arnold for a few hours to sleep outside with him and donate blankets and clothes.

“It was really fruitful. Some of the people couldn’t donate but being out here shows that they care about the homeless.

“I won’t be stopping here. There is still a lot of things I’m planning to do for the homeless. This is only the beginning and I’m glad it went well.”

Athlone bids farewell to legend EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt Abdullah Gangraker, owner of the Wembley Group of Companies, died on Sunday 27 June. He failed to recover from a complicated medical procedure following his admission to Constantiaberg Mediclinic after falling ill three weeks ago.

Affectionately known as “Mr Wembley”, Gangraker took over the family business after his father died in 1971. The company has since grown to become a household name.

However, Gangraker will be remembered more for his charitable contributions not only to his immediate community in Athlone, but also to those of his ancestral home in India.

He donated the land on which the current site of the Masjidul-Quds is found and served as one of the mosque’s founding members. This is site at which thousands of mourners gathered to bid their respects, before laying Gangraker to rest at the Johnston Road cemetery.

“The man was a visionary businessperson with the Wembley Group of Companies in Belgravia Road. It is an iconic setup there. He was a philanthropist of a very high calibre in terms of being the man who donated the land for the building of the Gatesville mosque,” says Parker.

One of Gangraker’s many donations to the community was an entire hall for the Islamia Complex.

Gangraker also looked after orphans and also helped develop infrastructre in his ancestral village in India. “He was a man who was passionate about doing things to perfection and we are very fortunate. Although it is a sad loss, the loss came in the spiritual month of Ramadaan, so from an Islamic perspective, that actually is some sort of consolation,” says Parker.

The family business is left in the able hands of his son, Mujeeb.

Gangraker is survived by his wife Fatima and six children Asghari, Chaan Bibi, Mujeeb, Haliema, Sumaya and Sakeena.

LOGOS HOPE

T

he world’s largest floating bookshop has sailed into the Mother City, bringing with it over 400 volunteers from 60 countries.

On board are even a few local faces, visiting their home for the first time since joining as crew on the Logos Hope.

The Logos Hope, a non-profit International Book Fair and Youth Service Project vessel, will be docked from Friday 24 June to Monday 11 July.

Logos Hope, operated by GBA Ships, a German registered non-profit organisation, sails across the globe with the purpose of bringing knowledge, help and hope to the nations of the world.

Logos Hope’s book fair sells books for a fraction of retail prices, making it affordable for all walks of life. They also offer educational activities and theatrical performances on board the ship.

Many of the crew have never been to Cape Town, the final stop on the ship’s South African leg.

However, Neil Meiring is coming home after a 16-month stint at sea.

The mechanic from Kensington joined the ship after working as a car mechanic in the Cape Town CBD. “I felt the Lord leading me to resign. During my last week of notice, I heard about the (Logos Hope). I had no ambition of joining, but the Lord led me,” he says.

Meiring started his journey working in the galley, before receiving safety training and moving to the engine room. He now works as a general mechanic.

“I still get seasick on every journey,” he says, laughing.

n just over four months, the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police unit have made hundreds of arrests with the help of CCTV cameras.

The City’s Strategic Surveillance Unit is set to install additional CCTV cameras to the tune of nearly R12m in the new financial year.

The Safety and Security Directorate has set aside around R7.4m for 10 new cameras in areas like Goodwood, Silvertown, Bridgetown and Gatesville.

In addition 26 ward councillors have also made ward allocation funding available totalling R4.45m for cameras in their respective areas.

The Strategic Surveillance Unit is in the process of retrofitting existing cameras with automatic number plate recognition (LPR) capability and plans are being finalised for the upgrade of the City’s fibre network system.

The City has introduced the Regulation of External and Privately Owned CCTV Cameras on City Property Policy, which was approved in June 2014 (“Residents must register CCTV cameras”, People’s Post, 8 December 2015).

The policy aims to better regulate the increase in privately owned CCTV cameras that are installed on City land and infrastructure and to keep an effective record of ownership of such infrastructure, should footage be required in investigations by the South African Police Service and information gathering by the City’s law enforcement agencies.

Currently, the City has a network of 440 CCTV cameras in various parts of Cape Town.

In the first four months of the year, the camera network detected 3313 incidents including accidents, crime and fires among others.A total of 108 arrests have been made during this period.

The cameras have the ability to stop criminals in their tracks, as at least five suspects discovered in the last two weeks. . On Tuesday 21 June just before 09:00, CCTV operators noticed a suspicious vehicle in Calypso Square, Town Centre. Law Enforcement officers in the area responded and caught three men doing drugs in a white Toyota Conquest. . On Monday 20 June, CCTV operators noticed a suspect breaking into a shack in Site B, Khayelitsha. They alerted Metro Police who responded and caught the suspect red-handed with the stolen items. He was charged with breaking and entering.

. On Monday 13 June just after 15:00, CCTV operators spotted an attempted smash-and-grab incident on the corner of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Road in Bonteheuwel. The CCTV operators kept an eye on the main suspect and directed Metro Police officers to the area. The officers apprehended the suspect just minutes after the incident. The 25-year-old is a known smashand-grab suspect.

“These incidents are but a few examples of where our remote policing capabilities have made a real difference. The camera operator is able to keep an eye on suspects and lead the responding officers right to them.

Even where arrests aren’t made immediately, the footage can also be useful after the fact to help the South African Police Service track down offenders,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

“There is, however, still room for improvement. The response doesn’t always match the real-time events because resources are thinly spread. I’m also not convinced that the footage is being used as effectively as it could and the system is not immune to vandalism and theft of infrastructure. That being said, we are making progress and those with criminal intent are warned: you could be the next to be caught in the act.”

The society has through its job placement strategies guided 176 visually impaired students to employment since 2011.

It seeks to double its most successful annual figure of 50 to 100 in the 2016/2017 period under review.

“Our hope is that this pilot programme will become a standard part of our career de-

velopment service here at CTSB,” continues Botha. It will be rolled out twice annually and create new mentors from the group of previous mentees who have gone on to succeed in full-time employment.

“We also hope to be able to provide a high standard of training for these mentors and to see significant growth in employment figures for people living with visual impairment.”

Town Society for the Blind (CTSB) in association with the DG Murray Trust and Evolve Social Enterprise in Salt River on Wednesday 22 June.

Michelle Botha, career developer at CTSB, explains that this initiative was produced by developing strategies through comprehensive research and by liaising with the Australian Network on Disability as well as local organisations.

Marshall says it was during this time that he learnt to set himself apart from the rest and adapt to different styles.

“I can’t explain why I like dancing. The best way I can describe it is as if I am in a relationship and I can’t say why. It’s the passion that makes me feel whole and at peace.

Dance also gives me an alter ego to express myself for the person I am inside,” he says.

Marshall majors in hip-hop as his chosen genre.

“I see hip-hop as an umbrella to many other dance styles,” he says.

Marshall dabbled in many different styles but says nothing other than hip-hop has peaked his interest.

It is his love and commitment to the sport that recently saw him rewarded with top accolades for the craft.

fter two completely sold out runs in 2015, The Lilliput Children’s Theatre Company will be performing Goldilocks and the Three Bears again this school holiday.

The children’s classic will be staged at the Nassau Theatre at Groote Schuur High School, in Palmyra Road, Newlands at 10:30 from Monday 4 to Saturday 16 July.

The play follows the adventure of Goldilocks in the forest before her birthday. Her grandfather is organizing a birthday party, but Goldilocks get lost in the woods and stumbles across a house belonging to the three bears.

With nobody home, Goldilocks goes inside and makes herself at home. The three bears come home to find their visitor fast asleep with

Like our hero who is on a mission to make life better for others, Canal Walk Shopping Centre and the Hyprop Foundation have this year partnered with the LEAP Science and Maths schools. All proceeds from the theatre programmes, as well as a percentage of the ticket sales from the staging of the performances will be donated to these no-fee schools. Canal Walk is also asking patrons and theatre goers to bring a can of food to help them and the LEAP schools to feed the minds and bodies of those less fortunate.

Take child safety seriously I needed to write this letter as I read how a caring person advised parents to teach their children to use a “password” when a stranger, potential abductor or sex predator approaches them. This “password” system is supposed to protect children from strangers who approach or speak to them.

We have to go deeper into this issue of our children and grandchildren’s safety. The best instructors to teach our children about their personal safety are parents and teachers.

The most important rule that we must drill into our children’s daily routine is to never talk to or approach a stranger even if they know your child’s name.

Parents have to practice safety

hints with their children. We as parents must listen to our children and know their activities and their habits.

At home: Never open the door for strangers. Never engage in conversation with strangers when answering the phone.

There must be a list of emergency numbers the child must phone in the event of an emergency and the parents numbers must be on top of the list.

In public: Never just drop your children off at a mall, game arcades, parks or at a friend’s home. Get out of the car and escort them and do the same when you fetch them.

Never leave a child alone in a vehicle.

At school: Make sure your

child’s name is not visible on their clothing, backpacks, suitcases and lunch boxes.

Parents have to do a recce of the route their children take and see if there are dangers. If there are bushes have the local councillor trim or cut these. See if you can line your children up with a “buddy system” to and from school.

Communication on a daily basis between parents and children is vital. Children must be encouraged to address their concerns without fear reprisals.

‘Start building a life for yourself’ I have been living in Lavender Hill for 32 of the 39 years which my family have been in the area.

I have witnessed many changes over the years: some positive, but mostly negative. Two of the positive changes are the role models we see in our community: people who sacrifice of their time, energy and personal resources to make a difference in the lives of others. Another positive is that Lavender Hill has produced talent in government, entertainment and the broadcasting field. These are people we can be truly proud of.

Not for one minute do I think that being a parent in our troubled area is easy. It is not. I take my hat off to the parents who own up to the challenges which they have to face on a daily basis.

One thing I am firm on, though, is the loitering of youngsters. They are only too happy to stand on street corners, and float from the one dagga

joint to the next, and have no desire to work. Instead, they prefer to hang on to every word which comes from the mouths of the Skebenga on the corner.

My mother would never let us spend even a minute in the company of these people. We were taught that not every one can be your friend, but you do not pull your noses up at anyone.

I see how parents leave their homes in the cold, dark mornings to go out and work so that they can feed their off-spring, most of whom are able-bodied males. These very same males are allowed to float from the one corner to the other.

I take my hat off to the parents who do not tolerate this.

To the youngsters I say: start building a life for yourself, go out and do whatever honest work you can, so that you can help your parents put food on the table.

Masencamp had to play catch up early in the u.18 boys’ final when Maree – the current WSL Africa Junior rankings leader – opened the 30 minute encounter with a solid ride of 7.17 out of 10 and then added a 5.33.

But full of confidence after his stellar performance in posting the highest heat total of the event in the semi-finals, Masencamp answered back with scores of 6.17 and an excellent 8.67, the highest of the heat, to take the lead.

Needing 7.43 for the win with seven minutes remaining, Maree had priority and waited patiently for a wave with scoring potential, while his opponent stayed busy

patrolling the lineup and found a corner to blast a couple of explosive turns for a 7.17 that clinched the title.

“He started off with a 9 and I was like ‘Aw no!’, and then when I got a couple of waves I knew that if I could get a good wave I could get the score,” said Masencamp.

“I’m feeling pretty great, and super pumped to be in the trials and surf against the big guys.

“Thank you to Billabong for putting on a great event, for the housing and for supporting me.”

The victory earned Masencamp R8000 and 1000 points which saw him overtake Jake Elkington into second place behind Maree on the WSL Africa Junior rankings.

He also took the early lead in the chase for the prestigious Billabong Junior Series u.18 boys’ crown that will be decided at the second and final event at Seal Point in September.

The u.18 girls’ final was a closer affair where Hawaiian Zoe McDougall led from start to finish over Kirsty McGillivray (Jef-

freys Bay), but only established a comfortable lead in the last minute when she added a 5.93 to her opening 6.67. McDougall (16), who is staying with the McGillivray family while in South Africa, was elated to collect an event win in just her fourth day in the country. “It was an interesting final with Kirsty, my good friend whom I’m staying with. Just fun, no hassling, just trading waves,” said McDougall.

“I’m pretty stoked, and I’m happy with the results, but mostly I’m using this event as practice for the Qualifying Series so I hate to mess up the ratings, but I’m glad Kirsty’s in first.”

The u.16 boys’ final was a see-saw battle with Kommetjie’s Max Elkington snatching victory in the closing minutes with a 6.60 and an excellent 8.33 to overtake good friends Eli Beukes and Luke Slijpen. The pair tied on 13 points each but Beukes finished second thanks to having the highest single wave score, while Karl Steen finished fourth.

The u.14 boys title went to Tide Lee of Ire-

land in a narrow win over York van Jaarsveldt, Mitch du Preez and Nate Spalding while Dan Emslie showed he has the talent to follow in the footsteps of his famous father, Greg, when he selected the best waves and convincingly won the u.12 boys’ division. “Competition from a different source is like a breath of fresh air. Our focus should be on developing our youth once they developed the same passion for the game, like we have witnessed over the past few days from our visitors,” said Noore Nacerodien, the president of CTSA. “The same applies to our coaches. I need to add that this is not a negative reflection on our teams. We are, after all, national champions in both senior and u.19 age group. Our aim and focus should be higher than those from now on.”

The coaching staff of Steven Rodkin, Wayne May and Deon Kerchhoff (technical advisor) from the Disa team – who led the Western Cape side to Gold when they defeated Ekurhuleni (Eastern Gauteng) 6-2 in the Grand Final in Polokwane in March – lost all four their matches against the foreign visitors in the round robin programme.

However, Kerchhoff said the standard among the foreigners was exceptionally high and refined. “Their softballers are a cut above the rest. While we are in our offseason, which is not an excuse, we were not at our best – but I’m sure the Friendship Games has now led us to look with hindsight into ways of improving our game and likewise we need to work even harder on shortcomings and eliminating our weakness with a positive approach in moving forward,” added Kerchhoff.
