A

march expected to lure hundreds of people turned out to be a disappointment on Saturday as a small group of people pitched on the day.

The #GangsterismMustFall campaign kicked off its march on Saturday morning starting outside the Manenberg police station with less than 100 people, despite piquing the interest of people via social media.

Transport was also organised for those coming from other communities.

The march, which was held in solidarity with the Boltman family of slain 10-year-old Jayden Smith, took place while the funeral was held in Parkwood.

The marchers were, however, not deterred by their small number while they yelled slogans, such as “An injury to one is an injury to all” and “We want drug-free and gang-free communities”, as the march proceeded in soaring temperatures. The marchers went down the Klipfontein corridor and finished at the Athlone civic centre.

Convenor Roscoe Jacobs says the group that gathered should not be discouraged.

“This campaign is about addressing the root causes that are perpetuating gangsterism. This is the culture of what makes gangsterism thrive in our communities and these are the issues we want to address and have to address,” Jacobs said on Saturday after the march.

Before the march, Jacobs sent out a statement accusing the mayor and premier of helping to “cultivate the moral decay in which gang culture thrives”. “#GangsterismMustFall condemns the failure of the Cape Town mayor and Western Cape premier to respond to the request to

collect the memorandum of gang-ridden communities. This failure substantiates our view that government lacks the political will to address the culture of gangsterism which perpetuates and continues in Cape Town,” the statement reads.

The memorandum, compiled and contributed to by various community members, was handed to a representative of the mayor’s office. Elgan Fortune, community facilitator of the mayor’s office, accepted and signed the memorandum outside the Athlone civic centre.

istrict Six was named the sixth municipal district of Cape Town in 1867. It was originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants.

District Six was a mixed-use area, explains District Six Museum director Bonita Bennett, made up of mostly a residential community, places of worship, schools, sports clubs and community centres.

“Structures were grand old buildings with intricate architecture, some crumbling and in need of repairs but many still sturdy and inhabitable. People from all over lived there: local, early immigrants from Europe, India and other parts of Africa,” she says.

The area was much like “downtown Harlem in New York City breathing a life of its own”, says Shahied Ajam, a former resident and chairperson of the District Six Working Committee.

“It was a city within a city and life was relatively good despite our hardships. Trade and commerce were vibrant and it ‘felt good’ to be a part of this cosmopolitan community,” he says.

But all this changed on 11 February 1966, when it was declared a white area under the Group Areas Act. Over the next twenty years the community was forcibly removed to the Cape Flats, their houses in District Six bulldozed to the ground.

Looking back Yusuf Khan remembers the day he realised he would have to leave, after hearing the news while at work at the harbour.

“I understood we would have to move, but I refused to move to Mitchell’s Plain. I said: ‘They will have to throw me out.’”

But working later shifts, with his four daughters and three sons at home, the safety of his children soon became an issue.

District Six encapsulated “a particular way of life that was exemplary in all its complexity” before it was declared a white area exactly fifty years ago, says the director of the District Six Museum. The area was declared a white area exactly 50 years ago on Thursday this week.

“We moved on a Friday night in November or December to Lentegeur. When we got there, there was no electricity.”

Harold Titus was 15 when the declaration was made. Having been born and growing up in District Six, in a diverse community, he had little understanding of what it would ultimately mean for his family.

“There was no difference between Muslim and Jewish, or between white and coloured,” he says of District Six.

Mass prayer walk

In 1979, he was forced to move with his wife and three children to Manenberg.

“I didn’t want to move and they came with trucks and moved my things. I had no choice,” he says.

Leaving District Six broke his heart, Khan says.

“People talk about the rainbow nation, but that was the real rainbow nation. Our neighbours were white and three houses down were blacks. We were all friends. They played rugby on our team and went to the bioscope with us,” he says.

The lesson to take from District Six is that there is nothing to fear in diversity, Bennett says.

“The more diverse a community, the more enriched the community

members are likely to be as a result of their exposure to different ways of being, different cultural norms and ways of life. A vibrant public cultural life is the result,” she says.

In the fifty years since the declaration, some notable achievements have come out of District Six, Bennett believes, in the affirmation of the cultural contribution of artists, writers, political thinkers and others from the area.

“There has been a growing awareness of a particular way of life that was exemplary in all its complexity. There has been an awareness that restitution is not only about building and claiming homes, but also about the cultural memory of the community. With-

Looking forward However, a lagging restitution process still remains a deep disappointment to many, Bennett says.

The 50th anniversary of the declaration naming District Six a white area means “remembering the pain, anguish, dehumanisation, deprivation and degeneration which forced removals brought with it,” Ajam says.

“The people need closure and the land claims commission, as well as the newly revitalised Land Claims Court, need to practically implement the transformational intent of the provisions of the Amended Restitution of Land Rights,” he says.

“Restitution in District Six is not about half-baked housing schemes doomed to fail. Restitution is about restoring the rights of people, restoring back the land to the people and respecting the dignity and heritage of the people. And that goes for all other historically disadvantaged communities who were affected by apartheid and its racist practices,” he says.

But the future of District Six looks bright, Bennett says.

“We look forward to a vibrant community which is both aware of and invested in its heritage; a community which can build a postapartheid diversity and has structures and leaders who can help to imagine a future together.”

Khan believes the culture and heritage of District Six will be carried forward by the future generation.

“It won’t be the same, but I’d like for my grandchildren to go back. It would be nice. A fresh start,” he says.

Titus adds: “We want our land claims back. To move back to District Six would be like living in paradise.”

The mayor was tasked to give feedback on the demands set out in the memorandum within 10 days.

Roegshanda Pascoe, Manenberg community police forum chairperson, who attended the march says “the process is long overdue”.

“Our communities have to unite and, though this will not happen overnight, we still need to take a stand. We need to keep our government accountable as these gangsters are preying on the vulnerable,” Pascoe says.

She adds that communities are as accountable for gangsterism ripping communities apart, saying that parents who har-

bour gangster children should report them.

Quinton Langeveldt from Kensington, representing the Acre Road Community Safety Patrol, says in their community “there is only one government and it is that of the gangsters”.

“There is no government there as these gangs do as they please in our community with little or no repercussions. These gangs are recruiting faster than our army and they have better tactics. We need to make gangsterism unattractive to our children,” he says.

Langeveldt urges communities to “fight the system of gangsterism, instead of gangsters”.

“We have to look at the root causes of gangsterism and tackle those issues. Gangs and their members will fall by themselves,” he says.

Hanif Loonat, chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain community police forum cluster, says communities “should not be complacent”.

“Those who decided to stay home for no reason: to you I say that you are no different from these evil people who hold us hostage.

We have the most hypocritical communities in this country. We blame everybody besides ourselves for the challenges we experience. We are the architects of our own undoing,” Loonat says.

wo families are living in damaged homes in the Breaking New Ground housing project after a blaze gutted their neighbour’s house just before Christmas.

The New Horizons residents say they have not been helped enough after their homes were damaged in the fire. They feel they have been left in the lurch by the City of Cape Town.

The semi-attached homes of the two families are on each side of the neighbour’s.

They alleged their neighbour committed arson by setting his own house alight.

According to the neighbours the fire was started on purpose as part of a love triangle saga involving the couple who lived in the house between the two families.

“Apparently the fire was started by the man who lived next door who was upset with his girlfriend, who lived with him, because she had a new partner. He then decided to set the room alight in which she lived,” Charles says.

Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City’s fire and rescue service, says “the fire was caused by a cigarette which ignited bedding and other items as indicated by the officer in charge at the incident”.

“We confirm that firefighters attended to a fire at Wagtail Street, New Horizons on Monday 7 December. The incident occurred at about 12:35.”

The City gave the fire victims temporary housing in shacks, but partners Tougeeda Hendricks and Taliep Charles say they are too afraid to leave their home alone as unsavoury elements have been seen hanging around at the ruined house next to theirs – the house which was totally engulfed in

the fire. It poses a safety risk for their family.

“I have not been able to get a decent night’s sleep since the fire. The house which was burnt down is now just an attraction for the wrong elements who come here to smoke and who knows what. I do not feel safe,” Hendricks says.

She adds they have tried to get help to have the section of their house repaired that was damaged by the fire.

“The fire affected our kitchen roof and cracked the walls too. Now we are waiting for people to get back to us to let us know when they can fix it, but we’re into our third month already living like this and there have been no answers,” she says.

Charles says he has had to close up a gaping hole in the roof himself to keep debris from falling into their house.

“We couldn’t leave the hole just like that because when food is made this dust and debris fall onto the cooking pots. It’s definitely a safety hazard and something needs to be done to ensure our home is safe again,” he says.

Charles says his family was lucky to salvage most of their belongings as Hendricks’s son was at home at the time.

“But now most of our belongings are with my parents, at my brother’s house and also at friends’ places here in New Horizons. But we cannot move it back into the house if we are not sure if or by when they will be fixing the house,” Charles says.

Benedicta van Minnen, mayoral committee member for human settlements, says the Breaking New Ground beneficiaries are property owners and “are responsible for repairs and maintenance”.

“Beneficiaries are responsible for any maintenance, insurance, repairs and the

safeguarding of their houses and premises as it is their private property.

“However, after the fire occurred, the City, on humanitarian grounds, arranged for the family to be issued with a building kit to provide temporary shelter.

“The City is looking at various options to see if the family can be assisted in any way,” Van Minnen says.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith confirms the incident was also reported at the police station.

The Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) will present an African premiere, multiple award-winners and Oscar nominees as part of the line-up of the fifth festival. The festival runs from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 February.

ECD centres gather pace

C

onstruction of the Nantes early childhood development (ECD) centre in Athlone is gathering pace.

After initially planning for the construction to be completed in July this year, the City of Cape Town has stated that completion is now expected in May (“City breaking new ground for new ECDs”, People’s Post, 22 September 2015).

The centre will be able to accommodate about 120 children. Almost R12m has been budgeted by the City’s social development and early childhood development directorate for the construction and finalisation of three facilities, including a centre in Delft as well as Netreg.

The process to appoint an operator for the Golden Gate ECD in Netreg is under way.

Construction of the Delft ECD centre is set to start in April, with completion expected in February next year.

In addition, the City is finalising the appointment of operators for the completed Ocean View ECD facility. The Fisantekraal and Strandfontein ECD facilities already have operators appointed and they are on site.

The City builds ECD facilities, then leases them to private operators.

“There have been instances where appointing operators has taken longer than we might have hoped, but we have to follow due process. We have also been subject to unfortunate construction delays over the years, but ultimately we are working as quickly as possible to get these facilities up and running to help address the pressing need for quality ECD facilities in our most vulnerable areas,” says Suzette Little, mayoral committee member for social development and early childhood development.

The directorate currently has 26 fully functioning ECD centres across the city that are leased to private operators.

Six suspects caught for theft I

n a combined operation by members of Muizenberg police, law enforcement and local neighbourhood watches, six suspects were arrested for various crimes ranging from housebreaking to possession of drugs and housebreaking tools.

Two suspects, a 27-year-old resident of Hillview and a 33-year-old resident of Village Heights, were arrested for being in possession of dagga and tik.

Intensive patrols were launched and another two suspects, aged 25 and 28, were arrested for housebreaking and theft. This was after a residence in Beach Road had been broken into earlier that evening. The suspects were found to be in possession of stolen goods.

Two laptops and two hard drives to the value of R35 000 were recovered.

Two men, aged 24 and 42 years, were arrested on Boyes Drive in Lakeside later after they were found to be in possession of housebreaking tools.

The suspects, both from Parkwood, could not give a reasonable explanation for why they had the items.

Lieutenant-Colonel Bongani Mtakati, acting commander of Muizenberg police station, was extremely pleased with the arrests and congratulated his members on their vigilance and commitment. He encourages the community to remain supportive and provide information that can lead to similar successes.

A talk to be hosted at the South African College of Applied Psychology (Sacap) in Cape Town on 24 February will try to shed light on this heated topic.

Speaker Dr Owen Redahan’s topic will be: “Sex Addiction: Accepting its existence and doing something about it”.

According to Redahan, an estimated three to five per cent of the population may be affected by sex addiction and the growing use of internet porn may contribute to an even larger problem within the next ten years.

People’s Post spoke to two local medical professionals to try and learn more about sexual addiction, its causes, symptoms and treatments.

Clinical psychologist Dr Larissa Ernst and general practitioner and fellow on the committee for European Sexual Medicine Dr Anthony Smith, shared their knowledge with us.

How prevalent is sex addiction among the local population?

Ernst: “In my practice I have found that it is less prevalent than other sexual dysfunctions.

“This however does not mean that it necessarily is less prevalent. It may just indicate that people are more reluctant to seek help. I do believe that sexual addiction may be on the increase due to the accessibility of pornography on the internet via mobile devices (phones and tablets).”

Smith: “It’s impossible to give prevalence figures as sex addiction is not a clear diagnosis to make. It is not an established medical issue, but a controversial one which often presents with the shame and which is not open and even.

“There are many issues with the definition and presentation of the addiction and the statistics are not many.

“Sexual addiction tends to find itself predominantly a co-addiction and it is treated with other addictions including drugs and alcohol and by psychologists who deal with addictive tendencies.”

Why is there a stigma attached to sex addiction?

Ernst: “Stigma still exists around all mental health challenges and sexual difficulties are no different. People are ill-informed and the lack of knowledge makes differences among people threatening. Sex and sexuality is also still a topic that is rarely discussed openly and freely. Discomfort and judgement still exist, which also contribute to prejudice. This further contributes to (sex addicts) finding it difficult to seek help. They are often scared of judgement.”

Smith: “The stigma can work two ways: The nature of the hidden aspect of the symptoms, like people who are addicted to internet porn, show behaviour with very little ability to control it, so to bring it out comes with a lot of shame. This causes symptoms to be hidden, often to themselves and others. There is another side where you hear about sexual addiction in the media, where people have a lot of sex and claim an addiction to sex as a medical diagnosis to help them out. One group of people clearly have an addiction to sex: When it starts monopolising their life, ruining their relationships and making them less able to function at work or living a fully active life. But there is also the other group who have lots of sex, but are not addicted. If the rest of their life is not compromised, it cannot be seen as a medical issue.”

Is it a cross-gender issue and why or why not? Ernst: “Sexual addiction has a similar function to any other addiction.

People become addicted to different things – mostly for the same reason, namely as an escape from a difficult, emotionally challenging or boring reality. It is a symptomatic way of dealing with difficult feelings. It therefore affects both men and women irrespective of sexual orientation.”

Smith: “It tends to be more men than women who have the problem. There could also be several cultural aspects meaning more men become addicted than women.”

What causes sex addiction?

Ernst: “Someone who is addicted to pornography essentially ends up defining his sexual pleasure as in relation with himself (whereas healthy sexuality is defined and experienced in relation to someone else – a partner).

“The fulfilment is heightened as there is no pressure to please someone else and no pressure to perform. This becomes very rewarding, which strengthens the conditioning process and hence creates a stronger attraction to pornography. This then leads to the person increasingly finding it difficult to perform sexually within a relationship with another person, which creates the secondary problem in that often the person ends up struggling with anorgasmia or erectile dysfunction.”

Smith: “It’s really hard to determine as there are no concrete causes, but one could say technology and the readily availability of internet porn, or even abuse as a child and other addictions, may be causes.

These are multiple, but like any other addict, addiction depends on the rewards system – there is no specific cause.”

Do you find internet porn has an influence on sex addiction?

Ernst: “Yes, definitely. This is often the way in which the individual enacts his sexual addiction – the pleasure of an orgasm is paired with the stimulus of the porn which creates a strong conditioned response and it often becomes quite boring to be sexually active without the stimulus of porn.”

Smith: “Yes. Often people involved with internet porn project behaviours they have very little ability to control.”

Is there an age group within which sex addiction is more prevalent?

Ernst: “I am not aware of any specific statistics. Most of my clients who are addicted to sex are between 20 and 40.”

Smith: “At younger ages sexual scripts have not been established.

“You will find addiction more when the person has a family and responsibility – at a latter stage. I would say mid-20s and thereafter is when addiction will tend to present.”

Where can a sex addict turn to if they suspect they have an addiction?

Ernst: “A registered psychologist with specialisation in sex therapy or an internationally certified sexologist.”

Smith: “There is a sex addicts group which works in Kenilworth.

“They can also contact any addiction psychologist or sex therapist or addiction counsellor.”

No answer after Sassa money goes missing EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt

arious instances of money mysteriously going missing and being deducted from grant recipients’ accounts have occurred at Sassa offices in and around Cape Town.

The provincial department of social development has requested the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) to urgently investigate reports of unauthorised deductions.

Scores of disgruntled residents in Athlone have complained that when visiting their local Sassa office, they were given much less than what they expected to be paid out.

The department was made aware of these incidents after members of the public reported missing money and alleged fraudulent activity at the paypoint. The department urges the public to be vigilant and not give out account PIN numbers and details.

Sassa says in a statement it is concerned that service providers in the financial sector debit grant accounts without authorisation from beneficiaries.

“In such cases we depend on beneficiaries to report it to us so that they can be investigated. If the outcome of an investigation finds that a beneficiary didn’t authorise a particular transaction, Sassa goes out of its way to ensure that a refund is secured,” it says.

Sassa believes the problem is not confined to the Western Cape. It has set up call centres in every province to ensure that it can nip these problems in the bud.

In addition to this, it says it will be running ongoing education programmes throughout the country to teach beneficiaries about how to protect their accounts.

Albert Fritz, provincial minister of social development, says he has written to Bathabile Dlamini, the national minister of social development, requesting urgent action to stop the illegal deductions experienced by some grant recipients.

“Residents of the Western Cape continue to fall victim to illegal and unauthorised deductions from their social grants.

Since the beginning of this year the ministry has already received 19 complaints related to illegal deductions, and to date has dealt with and assisted with 626 cases since 2010,” says Fritz.

Shock discovery Galiema Meyer (72) from Hanover Park was shocked after she was given almost half of what she ought to have been allocated at Athlone’s Sassa branch. But even more so after she found out that she was not the only one who had suffered this sickening discovery.

“Some people got sick, because we pensioners we live on that money and it is our only income. First of all, if we don’t pay our rent on time then we have to pay about four times that amount for two months and where do we then get that money from?

“Living on the normal money, you can at least depend on that money. The children cannot support you and then government is the only one to look after us old people and they made us dependent on that money and we adjusted our lifestyle to

that. I was very disappointed, I could not go through with paying all my debts.

“My sister gave me some money and I could at least pay my phone today, because I had to pay half of all the debts I was supposed to pay,” says Meyer.

Fritz confirms Meyer’s claim that airtime and electricity vouchers, which were never received, were deducted from her grant account.

Meyer also says she saw people asking for the identity numbers and Sassa cards of unsuspecting victims at Sassa’s offices before obtaining their grant money.

Robbing the poor “It must always be borne in mind that social grant recipients are the poorest of the poor, and are people from the most vulnerable segments of our society. To have any money missing from their grants has serious implications for their day-to-day basic needs, such as food.

“These illegal deductions often reflect as being for ‘airtime’ or ‘electricity vouchers’, which beneficiaries never receive,” says Fritz.

Meyer says she needs the help of others to travel places, which also requires her to dig into her already shallow pockets.

“I am not so mobile and I have to get somebody to take me where I want to go.

If I need something I need to send someone to go pay something. Then I also need to pay them for their trouble.

“When I got to Athlone, I was so shocked to see the people and the mothers with their babies standing in the line (experiencing the same problem). I wonder why do they do that to us?”

Residents must report these crimes Unless residents report criminals who steal water meters and manhole covers, many of these “elements” will continue to operate freely and without consequence.

This is a warning issued by the City of Cape Town in a bid to encourage residents to help them in stopping these types of theft occurring across the city.

According to the City, a reward system is in place for information that leads to the arrest of cable thieves or the recovery of stolen goods.

Those with information are encouraged to come forward as it will help the City to ensure that public resources are not continually used on repairs or replacement of infrastructure, the City says.

Reports on theft of utility services infrastructure between July and December 2015 show a loss of R30m – this includes theft of water and sanitation, electricity, and solid waste infrastructure.

Ernest Sonnenberg, mayco member for utility services, says the cost of this theft is not limited to repairing or replacing the infrastructure.

“In the case of our electricity network, theft also causes repeated blackouts, which affects local business and industry.”

Sonnenberg says the theft of manhole covers is also a major contributor to blocked sewers because inappropriate items can then enter the system more easily.

“The theft of water meters and fire hydrants and the resultant leaks also contribute significantly to water losses. At a time when the region is experiencing reduced rainfall, we can ill-afford to waste a single drop.”

Use your vote as a bargaining tool Allow me this opportunity to express my frustration with the slow pace of major development in areas such as Eastridge, Beacon Valley, Tafelsig and other poorer coloured communities on the Cape Flats and in Atlantis and Mamre.

It is becoming clear to me and many other people that we are the forgotten ones, the voting fodder.

We have to wait patiently and pray for prosperity to trickle through to our areas. A play park here and there and we have to be grateful and shut up. Our streets are being swept and cleaned whenever the responsible person feels like it and at intervals quite far and wide apart.

Over the last few years, cable thieves have stolen just about every Telkom cable in these areas.

Telkom staff took a radical decision not to replace cables, which under normal circumstances would seem to be a rational decision to make and I do understand this.

Why should law-abiding citizens and those who supported Telkom over many years be punished? I have not seen Telkom aggressively chasing after these cable thieves. I am also yet to see Telkom running a high-impact campaign in areas

where this problem has reached critical levels. I did, however, see Telkom rolling out fibre technology in some of the most affluent areas in our country, including Constantia, Bishopscourt, Camps Bay and Sandton.

Gang violence has plagued many parts of the Cape Flats for many months now. Why should our people get used to the idea of living in fear and accept that gang culture is part of our lives? We deserve better than this.

Reality is that many of our people are suffering, struggling to make ends meet and living a life of despondency.

As a coloured person living on the Cape Flats, I am calling on every potential voter to use the upcoming municipal election as a bargaining tool in an effort to see real development. Use your cellphones and make video recordings of every public meeting being addressed by potential ward councillors lobbying for your votes.

Ensure that you have hard evidence of all promises, which you can hold against them in the event of them winning in your ward. We can simply not afford to give away our votes anymore. I certainly have

no issue with people being blindly loyal to their political parties, however, at which point do you become loyal to your own family and your own community?

These elected officials work for us and not the other way around.

We need to hold them thoroughly accountable.

Your vote is as good as cash! You wouldn’t overpay for a product at one store when you can buy it at another store for way less money.

Why would you continue voting for a councillor or a party that continues to make promises and constantly fails to deliver?

If your current councillor failed to keep your streets clean, failed to beautify your area, failed to hold regular meetings, failed to provide decent play parks for the children, failed to assist with your municipal matters, then do not vote for that same person or his party. If your children cannot play outside due to gang violence and unsafe parks, vote out your councillor and vote in a new person.

Let your councillor work and work hard for that lucrative package they earn.

The truth about Great Whites

One of the most hated and misunderstood animals that has ever set foot on this planet, or put fin to water, are Great White sharks. Sci-fi movies and shark attacks have resulted in a tarnished reputation.

Sharks have been roaming the ocean for more than 400m years. A testament to the adaptation techniques of sharks is that they have survived many mass extinctions, including the extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. This great adaptation has resulted in sharks becoming an apex predator of the ocean.

Although Great Whites are widely distributed in the global ocean, they are extremely common along the South African coastline, particularly in places such as Gansbaai, False Bay and Mossel Bay. These areas are also known for the large amounts of fish and seals on which Great Whites feed. In the winter months, Seal Island in False Bay is a popular hunting ground for Great White sharks.

Great White sharks, despite popular belief, are in fact selective predators. It often occurs that Great Whites swim through the surf of popular swimming spots along the False Bay coast without attacking any people in the water.

Although there are shark attacks that occur yearly, it is extremely rare for a shark attack to be fatal. Last year, only three people died from a shark attack which is an extremely low number compared to the 100m sharks that are killed each year by humans.

Sharks have no natural predators. However, due to the large amount that are killed each year, the population numbers are drastically declining. This decline could have a drastic impact on the food web as sharks feed on seals who in turn feed on fish. If the seal population increases, the fish population will decrease, which would have a negative impact on the fishing industry. This has resulted in many countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, protecting the Great White shark.

It is important that we change the false perception we have of the Great White shark and, instead, focus on learning more about this creature.

shelves or being advertised – are seen by the general public only to realise that the inventor used plain common sense and then placed this common sense theory into a tangible product.

What is the point I want to make?

We all are consumers.

We noticed on the shelves of our shops and butchers how slowly and surely the meat price – our main source of protein – went up to almost unaffordable heights, but we still in a small way bought meat but in lesser quantities (and thank goodness for specials).

Now all of a sudden we have drought and this lack of water plays havoc on the farms because our animals, or rather the farmers’ animals, are being negatively affected in feed and life-giving water and this leads to starvation and appeals for relief funding from the government.

These funds cannot give water nor feed, only rain and water does this, as nature intended.

Now the farmer has control over the number of animals he sends to market and this control, common sense tells us, kept the monetary value up of meat products, because this strategy kept prices high for us, the struggling consumer.

Some of us contemplated starting free-range animal farming in suburbia but bylaws and neighbourly complaints threw brakes on our farming ideas.

Here is where I lose the plot completely: the farmers, and we thank God for our farmers, are now forced to slaughter their animals on an almost genocidal scale and now the markets, common sense tells us, is so flooded that the prices must come down.

This is not the case with this flood of meat – rather a herd in the fridge than starving on the field. And yet the prices still go up. To get rid of this meat one would think, with the common sense it deserves, the prices must come down.

Can someone with common sense explain to us, the common consumer, how this meat flood is not benefiting, for a change, the consumer?

oxes and boxes of photos tell of a lifetime of memories.

He has spent his life in the service of others and he shows no signs of slowing down, despite requests from his family.

Abdoraof Ismail, a community worker living in the Portlands area, has been actively working to improve the lives of residents since the 1980s.

He was born and raised in Sambokland, now known as Kenwyn, in March 1952.

It is here where he first became involved in community work.

Fresh out of high school he married his wife Galiema and together they continued to work in Kenwyn until the implementation of the Group Areas Act, which forced the family to move to Lotus River.

“It was a very sad and emotional time to see my father hopeless. But we moved and started a life there. I was involved with the Malay choir at the time, the best choir at the time, and then had the opportunity to move into Woodlands as one of the first residents there,” he says.

Galiema recalls many fond times they spent together working in the community, from feeding schemes in what now is Heinzpark to the development of mosques and churches.

“We saw to a lot of poor people, taking them in to stay with us. We also collected food items and cooked for hundreds of people in Heinzpark,” she says.

Galiema also recalls their involvement in the riots, where they would run into the schools and get the pupils out. She says it was a tough time as on many occasions they had to remove birdshot from the children’s bodies.

“Those were tough years,” she says.

Another highlight for the couple is the visit by Nelson Mandela to their Portlands home, shortly after his release from prison.

Heavily involved in politics at the time, Ismail hosted the former president, who spoke to the Muslim community from his balcony ahead of the 1994 elections.

And although he was involved in election drives, he did not cast his vote in the first democratic election.

“I was asked to go to Saudi Arabia to facilitate the voting abroad, but we were not allowed to vote at the time,” he says.

This was his second pilgrimage and he and his wife completed a third one together.

Founder of organisations Some of Ismail’s other accolades include a successful Muslim school, founding several institutions, including the Caledonian Cricket Club, the AMEG training school, several street committees and neighbourhood watch groups and being instrumental in the establishment of the Portland Indoor Centre.

Galiema also opened a daycare run from their home for several years.

He has also served on many bodies and organisation boards in the area.

It has been a lifetime, but Abdoraof shows no signs of slowing down.

“At a recent family meeting my children asked me to stop working in the community, but that is too difficult,” he says.

He continues to host a family fun day and carols by candlelight event as a way to give back to his community. He says he will continue to do so as long as possible.

Hit with a lot of speculations and negativity, Abdoraof says he just wants people to know he does not want to gain from it, but instead see the benefit for the community.

“I just want people to know who I am. I am an ordinary person. I believe I have no enemies and if someone has something to say about me, I would like them to say it to my face,” he says.

V Abdoraof Ismail has been living in Portlands for 36 years and has been married to Galiema for 43 years.

They have three children and five grandchildren.

Festival changes to monthly arts events in open spaces Based on funding constraints, the Africa Centre has had to cancel this year’s Infecting the City Festival.

The festival has been growing every year since its inception in 2008 to become one of the City’s signature arts events. Over 38 000 people attended last year’s festival.

Raising money for a festival is always a challenging job, but despite an exhaustive year-long search for funders, organisers were unable to secure enough funding to run

the festival in its traditional format.

With support from the City of Cape Town, however, Infecting the City will become a series of large and small monthly public art interventions that take place in the City’s shared spaces.

The schedule for the series, which starts next month, will be released in the next few weeks.

ocal comedian Dalin Oliver is giving local audiences one last chance to see his successful one-man show I came, I taught, I left, before he takes the production to other cities.

As a sports presenter on Good Hope FM by day and a comedian by night, Dalin’s career took an interesting turn before arriving on the entertainment stage.

I came, I taught, I left is a recollection of his experiences as a student, and later, as a teacher, the profession he originally set out to master.

While his foray into teaching was short, the classroom turned out to be a spring of content for his first production.

Although he performed I came, I taught, I left, directed by Stuart Taylor, at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown before, he only brought the show to Cape Town for the first time in September last year.

His run at the Baxter’s Golden Arrow Studio was so successful that Dalin decided he’d need to make another turn on the Baxter stage. In fact, the show sold out before opening night already.

“It’s very humbling,” he says, adding: “It’s a cool thing to be received so nicely by a home crowd.”

Dalin says he found his shows very interactive, but has been working on keeping the interaction with his crowd without compromising the running time of the show.

“For me it was about making it a tight product and leaving it at the punchline.”

Dalin will be back at the Baxter from Monday 22 February to Saturday 5 March.

And if all goes according to plan, the show will be filmed for a live DVD. From there he’ll take the show to Port Elizabeth, back to Grahamstown, and perhaps to Johannesburg.

“Joburg’s a bit of a beast when it comes to how to get an audience to a venue,” he says.

Movie debut In between all this, Dalin is also preparing for his big-screen debut alongside acting

veteran Neels van Jaarsveld and his comedy mentor Stuart in Finders Keepers. Set to be released in June, Dalin was quietly working on the local comedy last year.

“Finders Keepers is an action comedy that’s based on friendship, supposed friendship, betrayal, love and, eventually, happiness,” he explains.

“I’m excited about it, but also nervous.”

He met director Maynaard Kraak in Grahamstown during the first run of his show in 2014, and although he found the script funny, he recalls reminding Maynaard: “You know I’m not an actor, hey?”

A few crash courses in on-screen acting later, Dalin was on set, playing a lead role.

“Whether any of that helped at all, I have no idea.”

Naked scene While each character in the film has his own story, Dalin plays a “socially awkward” character, who he says is pretty much an overstatement of himself.

“He just wants people to love him, but he’s genuine.”

One part of the script he found rather amusing was a scene in which his character Lonnie gets mugged and has to run naked through the park . . . until he realised that would mean him running naked.

“I thought: ‘This is out of my comfort zone completely.’”

In the end it turned out fine and Dalin says there’s no real nudity and lots of “nice comedy” in the scene, so he felt completely comfortable.

“That’s going to be fun once it releases,” he says of the film.

Dalin also recently performed on a Good Hope FM cruise on the MSC Symphonia and was a host at the at the J&B Met’s public village earlier this month.

He hopes to have a brand new show to bring to stage next year, but for now, Capetonians can catch I came, I taught, I left one last time at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio from Monday 22 February to Saturday 5 March.

Philharmonic live on radio Fine Music Radio and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) have teamed up to ensure that all the all CPO concerts in the City Hall in the 10th International Summer Music Festival will be broadcast live on FMR. The concerts take place every Thursday until 3 March, with an additional concert on Wednesday 25 February.

Thanks to radio station RSG, which records all CPO concerts for later broadcast, and sponsor Visagie Vos Attorneys, it will be possible for people unable to get

to the City Hall to hear and feel the frisson that comes from being in the concert hall, helping to create a stimulating and dynamic orchestra culture in Cape Town.

Veteran broadcaster and classical music expert Rodney Trudgeon will host the series, while still doing his pre-concert talks in the City Hall.

music teacher from Belhar wants to break the boundaries between musical genres with an innovative project that comes from his heart.

Keith Tabisher should know what he is talking about. He is the senior curriculum planner for music in the provincial education department and in his community he is renowned for jazz projects that have produced some of the best in the business.

Many of his musicians make it into national bands at major festivals.

“We’ve lived in ‘boxes’ for too long,” he says. “Music is music is music. There’s good and there’s bad, but the time has come for strict divisions between genres to come down.

“When it comes to teaching music we must try to open young minds to all kinds of music.”

To prove his point Keith has written more than 20 guitar compositions which represent a body of original music that defies categorisation.

“The pieces are a mix of folk, popular, contemporary and jazz elements written in a chord and melody guitar style that derives a lot from classical guitar technique, but uses modern, jazzy harmonic and rhythmic language.

“I call this work my Heartsong project, because the pieces come from a place deep within my psyche. They have developed organically and in a non-contrived way. I listened to the songs of my heart and found the notes, was led by the notes and allowed the

notes to take shape without too much interference from my conscious self.”

A further development has been a collaboration with composer and arranger Niel van der Watt, who has set 15 of these pieces to guitar and string quintet and one piece to guitar, marimba and strings.

This collaboration has produced 16 arrangements thus far.

“These arrangements can be envisaged as a model for ensemble playing, that could be used at FET-school level and beyond as material for ensemble repertoire,” says Keith.

Last week various stakeholders and music lovers got a taste of these arrangements when Keith performed with his ensemble at St Cyprians High School in Vredehoek.

With Keith on guitar the rest of the ensemble consists of Kerryn Torrance (first violin), Elina Koytcheva (second violin), Sarah Evans (viola), Cheryl de Havilland (cello) and Brydon Bolton (double bass).

“The music is about a search for artistic and emotional beauty. It is about boundary crossings to find commonalities. It’s about the quest for true self-expression, celebrating the diversity of creativity and culture,” he says.

“We plan to take this music to more public stages and make it more widely known and also offer workshops covering a range of topics concerning the compositions, arrangements and ensemble playing.

“The quintet represents all the instruments of the string section in an orchestra and we can offer demonstration workshops.”

Bursaries for theatre directors Young directors have less than two weeks to apply for this year’s bursary from the Theatre Arts Admin Collective.

With the support of the Baxter Theatre Centre and Distell, four emerging theatre directors will get the chance to work with a mentor, a small budget, a month’s rehearsal space and a week of performance at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective. It is recommended that directors work with already existing scripts, as the month-long period has proved too short for devised work.

The bursary is specifically designed for emerging theatre directors who have had some experience in directing and whose

passion is to have a career as a theatre director. The bursaries will run over four periods: from 2 May to 4 June with performances from 31 May to 4 June; from 18 July to 20 August with performances from 16 to 20 August; from 22 August to 24 September with performances from 20 to 24 September and from 24 October to 27 November with performances from 22 to 27 November.

High schoolers to show off talent P

Maynardville Park in Wynberg celebrates 60 years this year, as well as the 60th annual Shakespeare production put on at the open-air theatre. This year’s production is Othello.

60 years of shows at the park Othello is featured in the Maynardville openair theatre in Wynberg this year as the stage for the annual Artscape Shakespeare production.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the venue as well as the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 1616. Throughout the year, theatre companies across the globe will pay tribute to William Shakespeare’s lasting legacy.

“The setting under the stars provides a memorable experience for theatre lovers of all ages. The spectacular Maynardville Park has earned its reputation as one of the bestloved outdoor theatres in Africa and offers patrons a 500m2 park for pre-show picnics and drinks, as well as a unique wooded 720seater theatre,” says Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.

Since its establishment in 1956, the theatre has presented a Shakespeare play each year.

It attracts an average attendance of 20 000 theatregoers.

A major focus of the theatre has also been to introduce young people to Shakespeare’s plays. As many as 8000 pupils attend each year.

“It is especially an attraction for pupils who have it as a setwork piece, since a live production will allow them to delve further into the various themes,” says Walker.

This production of Othello is directed by Fred Abrahamse, with set and costume designs by Marcel Meyer, lighting design by Faheem Bardien and original score by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.

The production will run until Tuesday 23 February.

Last chance for Cycle Tour spot T

he official substitution process for this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour is open until Friday 19 February. Cyclists who missed the original entry deadline in September last year, now have a chance to secure a spot in this year’s event.

This substitution entry process allows cyclists who have entered, but no longer wish to participate, the chance to transfer their entry to someone who wants to ride.

Substitution entries cost R250 each.

The substitution process does not apply to charity entries. Entrants wishing to substitute their entry must contact their group administrators to facilitate substitutions.

Interested cyclists should complete an online application by visiting www.cycletour.co.za/index.php/enter/substitutions/.

The withdrawing entrant may request that the substitute entrant refund his entry fee too, but he may not ask for more than he originally paid. Pedal Power As-

sociation members paid an entry fee of R440 each and non-members paid R470.

Organisers will send a confirmation letter to the substitution entrant within five working days of receiving the consent letter. The substitution entrant will be notified of his race number and start time by 26 February.

Substitution entrants can collect their race numbers at the Tour’s expo at the Cape Town Stadium from 3 to 5 March.

“We’ve had to implement stringent rules to ensure the safety of all cyclists participating in the event, and we strongly advise all cyclists to use only the race number allocated to them. Those participating with another cyclist’s race number will be disqualified and the original entrant will be suspended from future events,” says David Bellairs, a director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organiser of the race.

Crusaders lose in tight game SEAN CAMPBELL

estridge Yankees from Mitchell’s Plain came from behind to beat Grassy Park’s Crusaders 5-3 in a tight baseball game at Stephen Reagon sports ground in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday.

Westridge scored two runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth inning to record their fifth victory of the season.

Westridge scored two runs in the second innings on two walks and a hit. Crusaders bounced back immediately in the third, scoring their three runs from three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Westridge managed to curtail Crusaders’ quest for more runs by executing the only double play of the game in the third inning.

Westridge had five scattered hits for the game, but none more crucial than Jayson Ripepi’s two-base hit in the seventh inning to score two crucial runs for the winners.

Aiden O’Connor was Crusaders’ best hitter with his two hits in four batting turns.

Pitching duties on the Crusaders side was shared by starter Ashwin Kleintjies (4 inn) and Cameron Fortuin (4 inn). Between them they conceded five hits, five walks and struck out six batters.

Westridge started with Ripepi, who pitched eight innings, conceded six hits and a walk and struck out eight hitters.

Luwayne du Plessis got the last three outs.

Bowls season in full swing STEHAN SCHOEMAN The bowls season promises to be exciting with various leagues already underway.

The clubs in the province are battling it out for top honours.

The women’s sides are currently underway in the Muter competition, with the men in flag and mixed teams in trips.

Durbanville Bowling Club plays host to the ever-popular Masters tournament on

19 and 20 March. The elite tournament is exclusive to invited players and promises a showcase of top-class bowls.

Teams from across the country will flock to Cape Town for the All Cape Tournament, which is one of the season’s highlights. The tournament will take place from 24 to 30 April. Entries are still open for the tournament. The venue is not yet confirmed.

Bothasig outplay VOB Even without five of their SA national baseball players, Bothasig was still able to beat VOB comfortably 12-2 at Abe Sher sports ground in Bothasig on Saturday.

Lucas Steinleib, from Germany, and Brad Erasmus shared the pitching duties for Bothasig. They conceded five hits and three walks and struck out five batters.

Jason Theys pitched 5.1 innings and gave up five hits and six walks. He hit two batters and struck out two batters. He was replaced by Chad Jones who conceded seven hits in his 2.1 innings.

Bothasig’s top hitters were Brad Erasmus (3 for 3, including a two-run home run), Dayle Feldtman (2 for 3) and Tyrone Milne (2 for 3).

VOB had five hits, which included a solo home run by Paul Bell in the sixth inning.

Grassy Park club seek coaches for junior soccer players Evertonians Football Club in Grassy Park is opening an opportunity for the next potential Alex Ferguson.

The club is calling on all retired coaches, grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers or men with some spare time to join the club as coaches.

Those interested can specifically join the

volunteer coaching staff to coach the club’s junior players every Tuesday and Thursday from 17:00 to 18:00, as well as Saturday mornings, which are match days.
