Young scientist off to LA NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

A

Claremont learner is flying the South African flag at an international science and engineering fair in Los Angeles this week.

Katinka Wilkinson, a Grade 10 learner from Hershel Girls’ School, was awarded the opportunity after she won a gold medal for her project in the Cape Town round of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists competition in August last year. She was then sent to the Eskom International Science Fair in Johannesburg where she won another gold medal.

Joanne Bottcher of Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, says because of her continuous achievement Katinka was then “chosen to be interviewed by a panel to determine whether her project would be used to represent SA overseas. She was chosen and has worked tirelessly to perfect her project.

“Katinka began by making her own flywheel and then decided to use the perfectly machined flywheels in old computers. Not only has she found an alternative method of energy storage, but by repurposing old computer parts, she is reducing waste with this green engineering solution.”

Katinka used discarded computer hard drives to invent a working power storage system which could be hooked up to solar panels in place of batteries. She powered up the flywheels and proved that they could provide usable power to the system.

“I started working on my project in March last year for a school project and I did not exactly expect it to go this big,” says Katinka.

Katinka is the second learner from Claremont to be chosen by Eskom Expo for Young Scientists to represent South Africa internationally, after Junho Ko from Bishop’s High School in Rondebosch who also won a competition to attend the International Energy, Engineering and Environmental Science Fair in Texas two weeks ago.

Junho’s project investigates using recycled 500ml plastic bottles filled with water to insulate homes in informal settlements from extreme heat and cold. His innovation has been successful in lowering tempera-tures as much as 5°C in hot weather.

t has been just under seven years since Suzette Little started her career as a City of Cape Town councillor. And with her recent appointment she believes no task is too big or too small.

From her early days as the ward councillor for Athlone, Little says she has learnt many valuable lessons over the years but every day presents a new challenge. In January, Little was appointed as the Mayco member for the northern municipal district following the implementation of the City’s organisational development and transformation plan. Capetonians have seen a shift in the mayoral committee and the introduction of four area-based Mayco members who are tasked with overseeing service delivery across various City departments in a defined geographical area.

In this week’s edition of “Municipal matters”, People’s Post chats to councillor Little, who now manages the “northern” area, which comprises six subcouncils and 30 wards.

Little was born and raised in Athlone. From 2008 to 2010 she worked in administration for the City. After years of community

work, Little put her head in the ring during a by-election in ward 49 in 2010. After winning amid much dissatisfaction over the previous councillor, Little says she first learnt to celebrate the community spirit in Athlone.

“The residents were very proactive and they made it known that if I, as the councillor, was not working for the community, they would use their vote. So they really held me accountable and they will always have a special place in my heart.”

Little was later appointed as the local subcouncil chairperson and one year later, was appointed as the Mayco member for social development and early childhood development.

In January, along with three of her colleagues, Little was appointed as a “mini-mayor” and now oversees service delivery in a range of suburbs, stretching from Hout Bay to Brackenfell, including the entire West Coast area all the way to Pella and Mamre. Area north is the biggest of the four areas and the only one managed by a woman.

community meetings aimed at understanding the issues across the area she is responsible for.

“I have been fortunate to be able to go out and work with people to understand what they need. It is arrogant to come into a community and tell residents what they need.”

The public emergency communication centre’s new facility will feature the latest technology, courtesy of the emergency policing and incident command (Epic) system.

Project Epic is an integrated communication platform designed to ensure that all safety and security departments function well and can provide better service. While the emergency centre has used a number of technological platforms over the years, the Epic system is the first to integrate call taking and dispatching across all of the City’s emergency services.

“This is a revolutionary system that helps call takers identify where the necessary resources are and their status, but also to dispatch the closest available resource along the best route. The Epic system provides real-time feedback on the status of an emer-

gency and helps us improve service delivery while also managing our resources more effectively,” says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services.

The new facility will boast features such as video walls, which will monitor the freeways and the City Bowl. The City Bowl is currently monitored by CCTV cameras.

Features will also include interconnectivity with other services such as the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, Traffic Services and Law Enforcement and Metro Police departments, explains Smith.

“The new facility will provide for a better working environment for emergency call centre staff and will enable them to easily navigate the available information feeds to refer and track emergency situations as they unfold,” he says.

The emergency centre first started operating in 2000 as a means to

centralise calls to City emergency services. Call takers are also able to reroute calls to external agencies like Metro Emergency Medical Services and the police. In recent years, the communication centre has also started handling other City services, like the social development and early childhood development department’s street people information line and the substance abuse hotline.

External entities that deal with emergencies but do not have 24hour capacity (such as Table Mountain National Park) are using the City’s communication centre for after-hours telephone calls.

The centre’s call takers answered an average of 42 500 calls a month this year so far. Of these, almost 30% were medical calls and 17% sought help from enforcement agencies.

Rondebosch police need help to find the owner of a stolen necklace they recovered.

The silver necklace was reportedly stolen from a woman who was walking near the Baxter theatre in Rosebank on the morning of Monday 1 May. Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam says the suspected thief has been arrested and the necklace can be fetched from the police station.

“It is alleged that the woman was walking in Rosebank Main Road when a thief ripped off her necklace and ran away. The silver chain was recovered from the suspect. The woman is advised to make contact with Rondebosch detective Constable Inez Wales on 060 7446 576 to identify her property.”

He was chased by the police with the help and quick thinking of a Groote Schuur Community Improvement District security officer. . In another incident the police arrested two men for possession of possible stolen property in St Andrews Road in Rondebosch.

Sisam says Rondebosch officers saw two men walking very fast with a silver aluminium stepladder. The police stopped them and asked after the ladder.

“The two suspects were unable to give a reasonable answer and were contradicting each other. They were arrested and taken to Rondebosch Police Station,” says Sisam.

Little explains looking at the northern area, one of the main issues is planning and densification and helping to get people to live closer to their places of work. She also says illegal dumping and the condition of roads are major concerns.

Little has already embarked on community outreaches in various suburbs and says more meetings with residents are planned. In the coming weeks and months, she will be visiting various areas including Bo-Kaap.

She says while the needs of each of the communities vary, she has been impressed by the willingness of local leaders and community organisations to work together to improve Cape Town.

“I really am privileged that in area north I have met with some amazing folk who are as passionate as I am about development. They have come out and offered their help and I am most certainly going to make use of them. So we will have a number of meetings aimed at looking at how we can uplift the social fibre of area north through interventions like improving sports facilities and get the communities to work together.”

Doctors give an earful of children’s laughter NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku Claremont doctors have given an eightyear-old a second chance to enjoy her childhood by restoring her lost hearing.

Two doctors performed a two-hour cochlear implant surgery on Aloshay Arendse at Life Kingsbury Hospital on Tuesday.

Aloshay was diagnosed with steeply sloping hearing loss and received hearing aids for both ears at the age of six.

This came after a liver transplant at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital when she was one year old, which was followed by bone marrow cancer and heavy doses of medication, resulting in hospitalisation for 11 months while she received 28 weeks of chemotherapy.

Gary Kroukamp, one of the doctors, says they are satisfied with the surgery and how she has responded to it. “We were quite happy to do it as it allowed us to use our skills to advance the life of this little girl and this is what we would like to do for our patients whenever we can. The primary benefits of

performing this life-changing surgery are spoken language acquisition, improved speech intelligibility, reading comprehension and high frequency hearing which is missed with hearing aids.”

Her mother, Candice Isaacs, says it has been tough to see their daughter going through many changes due to medical conditions. Though it was not an easy decision for them to make, they had to welcome the opportunity to give her another chance to hear.

“It was a tough time for all of us, especially having to watch her transition her way from one challenge to the next, but we had to make difficult decisions in order to save her life. Aloshay was born with normal hearing, but lost it due to the medical and surgical interventions.”

The implant is described as a very soft and flexible electrode designed to protect and preserve the structures of the cochlea.

The implant will be switched on in three weeks once the swelling has gone down and Aloshay has fully recovered from the surgery.

According to a City of Cape Town report, one of the properties in Claremont used about 678 kilolitres in March, instead of the normal usage of 20 kilolitres per household in a period of a month.

Also making up the top five are Bantry Bay, Oosterzee, Malibu Village and Penhill.

The findings come whilst the City council is still expected to decide if water restrictions should be raised from level 3 to level 4 later this month. The report states that most of the water wastage in the suburbs listed are experiencing leakages and the water inspector has been dispatched to make sure all the leaks are fixed.

Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for water services, says: “About two-thirds of the top 30 properties on the March list were found to have leaks on the properties, which are the reason for the high consumption. City water inspectors have been engaging with the high users and most of these leaks have been repaired by the owners. The City is pro-

viding help and counsel where we can. Those who are rectifying leaks on private properties are directly contributing to our mass water-saving efforts.”

She says it is important that communities work with the municipality to tackle the issue of permanent water scarcity.

Other suburbs also identified as high water users are Hout Bay, Green Point, Ekuphumuleni, Strandfontein and Mandela Park, which together used more than 2460 kilolitres in March.

How to check for leaks on your property . Close all taps on the property and don’t flush the toilets. . Check and record your meter reading. . Wait 15 minutes and record the meter reading. . If there is a difference in your meter reading, you have a leak. . Call a plumber if it is not a DIY job.

One leaking toilet wastes between 2600 and 13 000 litres per month. A leaking tap wastes between about 400 and 2600 litres per month.

They received grants of up R500 000 each awarded from the second round of the Design Innovation Seed Fund (DISF).

The DISF is a project of the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) with investment and management funds respectively provided by the Technology Innovation Agency and the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

Launched in 2014, the first round of the DISF funding was allocated to develop innovative ideas. The grants were used for a large range of activities, including developing prototypes, producing market samples, undertaking market research and investi-

gating intellectual property rights.

Erica Elk, CCDI executive director, says the second DISF round has a focus on helping ground-breaking South African-developed designs and ideas in four priority areas.

“We decided that in our second round of funding we didn’t want to just support innovation for its own sake; but rather to align with national and provincial priority sectors that will support economic growth.

This round of funding saw a specific focus on the agri-processing, health and biotech, and the manufacturing sectors. We had some incredible applications, 57 in total.”

Renaming needs public ‘approval’ T

he public will soon be invited to give their opinion on a proposal to rename De Waal Drive after a leader of the struggle.

The City of Cape Town’s naming and nomination committee recommended on Wednesday that De Waal Drive be renamed after Philip Kgosana, a struggle leader and former regional secretary of the PAC. The proposal is currently on mayor Patricia de Lille’s table for approval and then the City will undertake a public participation process for comments.

Kgosana led a PAC march of 30 000 protestors from Langa and Nyanga along De Waal Drive on 30 March 1960. The peaceful march to parliament followed the Sharpeville massacre. “Kgosana was only 23 years old at the time, marching at the front, leading the protestors against the pass laws along De Waal Drive and Roeland Street.

The protestors demanded a meeting with the then minister of justice, FC Erasmus. Kgosana and other leaders were persuaded to accompany police chiefs to

the police station down the road to meet Erasmus on condition that the crowd disperse. Kgosana asked the protesters to go home. The meeting with Erasmus never happened, and Kgosana was arrested and held in solitary confinement for 21 days in Roeland Street jail,” says committee chairperson Brett Herron. “He went into exile after his release. Kgosana worked for the United Nations for 22 years and only returned to South Africa after spending 36 years abroad.

After his retirement he settled near Pretoria, where he farmed with mushrooms and citrus.

“It is only befitting that we consider renaming De Waal Drive after this remarkable man who faced the apartheid forces at such a young age and contributed in changing the lives of people the world over as an employee of the United Nations,” says Herron.

Kgosana died last month.

“His son, Mohlabani, said Philip was ‘deeply honoured’ by the gesture and that they also support the proposal,” says Herron.

Students get a spin at the wheel NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku A new mechanical engineering partnership aimed at empowering students has been launched in Cape Town.

MerSETA and Bateleur Motorsport officially announced their partnership in Observatory on Tuesday afternoon.

Five engineering students of the College of Cape Town are the first beneficiaries of the partnership.

They have been exposed to the basics of motorsports through skill development in mechanical engineering and auto mechanics. They were part of the mechanical crew at the race at Killarney Raceway on

Saturday.

Mike Schmidt, the team principal of Bateleur Motorsport, says the partnership will see five more colleges from other provinces benefiting as well.

“This partnership with merSETA and the funding provided will give an opportunity to kids from around South Africa, many who come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, to gain insight into the career opportunities that exist both nationally and internationally,” says Schmidt.

College of Cape Town principal Louis van Niekerk says: “We are really honoured to be part of the initiative as it is going to open doors for our students. It is a motivation for youngsters who usually want to hear and feel the smell of tyres spinning. I am very proud of these students.”

A unique city sight

It is seldom that we get to celebrate the history of our beautiful city, yet often that we forget about some of the important events that shaped most iconic landmarks that help make it the city we know and love.

On a cold Sunday morning, while the sun was still asleep and mothers were spoiled with gifts and treats from their children and families, we and thousands of others were on the streets of the CBD celebrating the lives of the mothers of our city.

Paying homage to the colonial slaves on the Slave Route Challenge, the participants glimpsed some of the more important aspects of the slave trade and slaves’ lives back then and also got to see what they built and, in some form, celebrate all they did while acknowledging their pain.

As we walked the 10km route through the city, I thought about how much of what we enjoy is as result of the slaves and their contributions.

As I looked up to the daunting “koesister hill”, hesitating for a second, I heard a woman encouraging herself with the words: “Come on, the slaves built it, the slaves did it, we can do this.”

I thought about how true this was, how hard it must have been for them and how wonderful it was for this woman to live and share in that moment, and share it with us.

And so I forged on.

I did not expect to feel such a sense of acomplishment when I reached the top.

I was amazed by the view I saw as I looked across to the sun-kissed mountain, seeing Cape Town in all its beauty.

This year’s Slave Route Challenge was my first, and while for some it is an opportunity to rack up medals, beat their personal best or keep up their running goals, for me it was a unique experience.

An special moment of learning about and seeing the city I have called home for the past 24 years in a different light.

A place people travel thousands of kilometres to see.

A place we sometimes take for granted.

It was a privelege to celebrate the slaves of our past and appreciate their contributions to the amazing place we get to call home.

A missing blazer for the umpteenth time has prompted me to write this letter on a topic I am passionate about.

Having been an educator for 27 years, I, for a host of reasons, am all for school uniforms. What I am not in favour of is the type and style of uniforms our children have to wear.

We often complain that children these days do not play enough, yet at school they are required to be dressed like little businessmen and women. Their time for this will come and by then there will be no turning back.

We need to allow our children to be exactly that: Children. School is the one place where kids have all the space and peers to play with before school and during what was formerly known as “playtime”, yet I cannot see how they can play freely when they are encumbered by blazers, ties, formal shoes and especially dresses that put them at risk of having their underwear exposed.

In some cases, schools allow kids to wear tracksuits to school in winter, but this item of sportswear is often required to be worn with a shirt, tie, blazers and formal shoes. No-one in the real world dresses like that.

Another reason I am not in favour of our Eurocentric style of uniform is the hefty price tag attached to it.

On top of this, parents are required to buy sportswear for every season, every year. The exorbitant amount of money spent on uniforms could be channelled to something more educational, especially in these trying times when most households and schools struggle to stay afloat financially.

We are also faced with the dishonesty of many parents whose kids take home items of uniform that belong to other kids but never return these to the rightful owners. Even with names in them, many items of uniform go missing when kids have to change for Phys Ed or extramural activities. This costs parents lots of money when these compulsory items need to be replaced.

What I envisage is a move towards a more informal uniform that would allow our girls and boys to play freely.

Schools could still have their own identity by having their specific colours and badges on certain items. They could wear shorts/skorts and t-shirts or golf shirts as their summer uniform and their tracksuits, with maybe a longsleeved school t-shirt or golf shirt, in winter. School shoes could be replaced by plain black sport shoes (school retailers sell them).

I know of a few schools where kids dress informally and the parents and kids are extremely happy with it.

I agree that the formal uniforms of schools look smart, but we have to ask ourselves how practical they really are for the purpose and activities of those who have to wear them. Has anyone really put some thought into it or is it enforced and worn just because that is the way it has always been done?

I have noticed that the dress code for educators has relaxed over the years.

Do you remember the days when female teachers had to wear dresses and stockings and men had to wear suits and ties? What about our children?

I am in no way suggesting that mine are the best ideas and neither do I expect these to be adopted by any school without much debate. I know that the input of all stakeholders is required for such a major shift in policy but I do hope that my letter at least sparks such a debate at some schools where parents could do with a little extra cash in their pockets and kids could finally get the opportunity to play unencumbered by the trappings of an adult world.

Discrimination based on race and culture at private schools often made headlines last year. At state schools, however, we find more cases of discrimination based on financial ability.

Even though we are already in the second term of the school year, some learners are still struggling to focus on their schooling due to financial difficulties, some are sent home and prohibited from attending school until they come dressed with the exact school uniform, even though they are neat and wearing the correct school colours, some are excluded from certain classes and activities due to insufficient books, stationery and sporting clothes, while parents are being threatened with legal action due to outstanding school fees.

Certain learners are even subjected to frequent humiliation in front of the whole class because of their inability to afford these things. Schools have even gone so far as to confiscate the incorrect item of clothing from learners and refuse to give it back to them until the often expensive uniform articles, such as blazers, have been obtained.

This appears to be a common occurrence nowadays, even in underpriviledged areas. This is of great concern, as

many of these affected learners live in poverty, and are often only financially supported by a meagre child support grant.

Are these and other financially discriminating practices in accordance with the policies of the education department?

What proactive mechanisms are in place to monitor the correct implementation of government policy? Are parent and learner surveys also conducted to determine the incidence and extent of common unprocedural practices at schools?

The department of education cannot merely be relaying correct procedures in the media when responding to enquiries while just leaving it to parents to deal with autocratic school principals and governing bodies on their own.

Schools that used to withhold final reports because of outstanding school fees are also an example of such financially discriminatory practices.

The department should have an accessible helpline and customer care email address where these types of things can be reported, otherwise parents might resort to naming and shaming guilty parties on social networks.

Electric bylaw is shocking Does anyone else think that the bylaw on the new DB electricity boards which have to be installed on the outside of a wall or gate on your property is both dumb and a security hazard?

Every single person I have spoken to about it, thinks it is ridiculous and a dangerous bylaw.

When I rang someone in the department of electricity in Wynberg, a gentleman admitted they received a lot of complaints about the crime potential of the board placements.

Surely, if a council worker can easily access it, so can burglars? And if these burglars switch off your main electricity, it would render all lights, power and security useless, making your home vulnerable to break-ins.

What a weird and illogical law, I think, with total disregard for and lack of thought about our current high rate of crime. Plus, if you have a prepaid meter like I do, a reading is not even necessary nor is regular and easy access.

Where on earth is the logic in this peculiar and dangerous bylaw? Are the people involved in such stupid decisions actually paid to make them with our payments of taxes and rates?

I wonder if the council is prepared to pay compensation for claims against them should a break-in take place that involves electricity boards, as they will be and should be held responsible?

Who thinks this bylaw is a good one?

High rate is undemocratic With reference to “Electricity hike is unwelcome” (People’s Post, 9 May), I want to extend my concern in a similar context.

I have to agree with the writer, Glorya van Niekerk (secretary of the Princess Vlei Civic Association), that the City of Cape Town, which is supposed to work for us, is not doing that one bit.

The City is supposed to be viably democratic, but this is hardly the practise. They have introduced in their electricity unit structure – without citizen consultation – the rate per unit @ 97.09c from the first day of a given month to the 20th of the month (pensioner’s calculated rate) and 268.81c/unit after the 20th to the end of that month – an increase of more than 200% on a unit.

To crown this erroneous undemocratic practise, the consumer is told that not more than 350 units should be used from the 1st day to the 20th day – thereafter the greater rate is implemented.

This is hardly democratic practise.

Can this be scrutinised by our Constitutional Court and can the City say they work for us?

On pension day, we bought R400’s units. We did not receive what we expected, but the City did not keep from giving us R400’s worth – their higher rate was on the docket.

Now please we need help: How can the City do that, and they should supposedly be democratic?

Bad traffic is an old mistake Mayco member Brett Heron’s so-called cure for traffic congestion on Rhodes Drive/M3 at peak hours would not be necessary if the plans on the drawing board in the l970s for the Kirstenbosch freeway had been implemented.

As I recall, the route would follow the contour path at the base of the mountain from town right through to link up with

Boyes Drive. That would have prevented today’s traffic congestion.

The City council always made excuses not to construct it, mainly financial, and has allowed expensive homes to be built up to the mountain instead, now making it an impossible task to fulfil.

INTERNATIONAL NURSES’ DAY

ine nurses have been honoured by the City of Cape Town as part of an International Nurses’ Day celebration.

An event was held at Chapel Street Clinic in Woodstock on Thursday. The event mainly focused on honouring nurses who have worked for the City for between two and three decades.

The nurses honoured were Miranda Maree of Wesbank Clinic, Evelyn Tyutu of Luvuyo Clinic in Khayelitsha, Glenda Wright from Maitland, Judith Hendricks from Manenberg, Kamillah Majiet from Lotus River, Lousisette Mundy from Durbanville, Marcele Lakey from Valhalla Park and Amila Latief of the training department.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security, and social services, says City officials feel it is important to recognise and celebrate the nurses for the role they have played in the City’s health department and in communities.

“The nurses are the backbone of health services in the city.

“These leading lights have served the people of Cape Town and this administration for between 20 and 35 years, helping us to address some of the most pressing health challenges in our communities in spite of some very trying circumstances,” Smith says.

He says the celebration was also an attempt to motivate young nurses to take their jobs seriously, knowing their work is appreciated and recognised.

Tyutu, who has 30 years’ experience and is now working with TB and other infected patients, says she has served in three different clinics in the city. Her motivation throughout these decades was making a difference in the lives of many and seeing each patient recovering and fully regaining health with her help.

Maree says she appreciates being included in the celebration.

“It is a great honour. I really appreciate all the effort that has been contributed to make sure we are being recognised.

“Being a nurse means you are working with people and you have to render the required services to the people and it becomes a challenge when you have long queues of people and there is not enough staff. You have lives of many people depending on your hands.”

local woman’s mission to improve the lives of those living in townships has gone viral.

Christine Williams left her home in the suburbs and moved to the township of Dunoon where she started a non-profit organisation. A recent video of the 26-year-old’s story has gone viral, with more than 20 000 hits in the first four days after being published.

Williams – who initially didn’t want to make a video about her story or publicise her actions – left the comforts of Camps Bay in 2014 to relocate to Dunoon. She moved in next to a pastor from a local church, Joshua Generation, and says she began to experience a sense of community with the people living in her cul-de-sac and from her church that she never knew in her suburban life.

“I felt that God called me to move to Dunoon. I’ve always had a heart for townships, have always been involved in helping the poor and then I started to feel prompted to move into Dunoon and actually join the community.”

Staring a grass-roots non-profit organisation called MyDunoon, Williams says she and two other volunteers work towards community development. “We are currently running a recycling programme at Dunoon Primary School, teaching kids the value of recycling and rewarding them with stationery when they bring in litter.”

They also hold regular meetings with stakeholders in the community, including representatives of schools, businesses and other non-profit organisations. “This helps

The MyDunoon workers also partner with locals who “have ideas of their own and want to bring them to life”, Williams explains.

“We’re currently partnering with a bunch of guys organising a township boxing tournament, teaching people fitness and the technique of boxing,” she says.

They are also involved in projects to grow produce in food gardens, clean up the streets, paint walls and organise prayer meetings, Williams says.

Williams lived alone in her home in the township for two years until she got mar-

ried. Her husband, Howard Fyvie, encouraged her to make the video which was filmed in Dunoon township over a year .

“If she could have her way, she would rather nobody know that she moved into Dunoon township for those two years, and she would just quietly be there serving, loving and helping people. But unfortunately, that’s not how NGO life works. She needs financial support, and therefore – her story needs to get out there,” Fyvie says.

The six-minute video has been shared more than 500 times. People are commenting on Facebook with heartfelt replies, Fyvie says.

Spurs women take home spoils in football league ANDRÉ CRUYWAGEN Spurs women triumphed over their archrivals Santos 2-0 in a Safa Sasol Cape Town regional women’s league first round fixture played at William Herbert Sports Ground on Saturday.

The hosts kept the fort by playing with discipline and accurate ball control and passing. Spurs’ prolific striker Abigail Petersen gave her team a half-time lead.

With the start of the second half, the hosts continued their dominance. Serenity Warner rubber-stamped the victory with a solo goal, dribbling past the Santos defence.

The Vasco da Gama women foiled Dangerous Heroes women 9-2 at Parow Park. The hosts cemented their authority early in the game after the visitors failed to counter an attack which caused their downfall. The Vasco women were running after every ball and their strikers were unstoppable.

Portia United women narrowly defeated Maties FC women 1-0 at Mandela Park. The steady defence from the home team denied any opportunity for the Maties strikers who played with determination but failed to break through a solid backyard.

UWC thrashed Burnley United 8-1 in a derby played at Bonteheuwel Sport Complex on Saturday. The hosts failed to regain their winning magic and the visitors easy capitalised on it. The students took charge of the game with an attacking pace and the threesome of strikers were quick to settle the score.

Ikamva FC women secured a 1-1 draw against an impressive RV United women in a league derby played at Nyanga Stadium.

In the game errors were few, with both teams battling to collect the three points.

United took an early lead but failed to secure the victory after Lihle Qokela scored for them. Late in the second half Anelisa Makeleni salvaged a valuable point for her team with an outstanding goal.

Manenberg women suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat against Virgo women in Manenberg. The hosts played sluggish and the Virgo strikers inflicted more salt to a wounded struggling defence.

Lamees Brown (2) and Shandre Thompson netted for Virgo while an own goal from a sloppy clearance steered the visitors to a well-deserved three-point triumph.

Other results . Cape Town Roses 14, Defence FC 1 . Southern Stars women 3, Milano women 2 Heideveld women’s football academy toppled second-placed CPUT 4-3 in a derby in Bellville on Saturday. The students were on the attack and the visitors had to up their performance with a quick change of pattern.

Yonathi Ndleleni rushed to give the students a lead in the 12th minute.

In the 21st minute it was Ndleleni again who struck a superb goal for the host. Late in the first half a revived Heideveld fought back and Kim Mentoor scored for them. The visitors soon countered the host and hat trick scorer Mentoor was lethal with her right boot.

Nicole Miller, the hardworking student’s twin striker, was impressive and scored for them. Minutes before the break it was Mentoor again with a volley goal. At the start of the second half with the score level, the visitors were in full strength to climb the second position after striker Fazlyn Adams secured a hard-fought victory for them.

Top of the log UCT easily hammered Ocean View 14-0 at UCT. The students were in full control of the match after the visitors’ mental ability couldn’t perceive the hosts’ brilliance.

FC Tafelzicht women whipped Winnies women 6-1 at Gugulethu Stadium. The home team, Winnies, collapsed after the visitors dominated the ball for most of the game.The visitors pressured them with innovative attacking soccer.

Goal Hunters women defeated minnows Exceptional women 7-2 in an encounter played at the Westridge Oval. Exceptional play with home turf advantage failed to deliver. Nokuboanga Noqhakal, Zikho Faye, Nondumiso Magadla and Sinothando Lirula scored for the visitors, while Tertia Frieslaar and Sibahle Mbeko netted for Exceptional.

Other results . Ambassadors women 6, Milano women 0 . Bright Stars women secured their first victory of the season on Saturday at Manenberg after Lavender Hill women failed to arrive for their fixture and forfeited. . The RV United and Phoenix Spurs women’s match was called off.

ix of Shinkyokushin Karate’s local students participated in the national championships last weekend in Hammanskraal outside Pretoria.

“Much as our club wanted to enter more students, only the six were able to afford the cost of transport, accommodation and fighters’ fees. Our small team did exceptionally well, as we won four first places, one second place and one third place,” says club trainer Deen Daniels.

Aqilah Abdulla, Saaiba Daniels and Aashiqah Abdulla from Hanover Park all walked away with honours.

Aqilah Abdulla was crowned the women’s open weight national champion. Daniels

won the women’s u.65kg category and Aashiqah Abdulla won the women’s u.55kg division. The three divisions are the only categories for women older than 18.

Aashiqah Abdulla is only 16 years old, but won the senior women’s division with relative ease. This after she beat her 14-year-old sibling Sharfa earlier on the day as they battled it out in the final of the girls’ u.50kg division.

Raeesah Abdulla came third in the senior women’s open weight division.

“The tournament ended at 03:00 on Sunday morning after starting nearly five hours late,” says Daniels, adding that the team arrived safely later that evening.

Kommetjie sons surf for Crown L

ong beach in Kommetjie will see the return of the BOS Cape Crown on Saturday and Sunday.

The event has grown in importance and is now a selection event for the South African junior team to compete in the ISA world junior championships in Japan in September.

Turning up the heat, it is also an event on the World Surf League (WSL) pro junior calendar and offers sought-after qualification points for the prestigious WSL u.18 world junior championships in Australia at the end of the season.

It is also the second leg of the long-running

Billabong junior series which is celebrating 20 years of junior competition.

A number of local surfers will be vying for the Cape Crown division titles and aim to secure their team spots to represent South Africa at the junior world championships.

After WSL qualification events in Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban, Jake Elkington from Kommetjie leads the field among the WSL u.18 boys. He is narrowly ahead of Adin Masencamp from the Strand, Koby Oberholzer from Durban and Jake’s younger brother Max. Natasha van Greunen and Sarah Ingram, both from Muizenberg, will be trying to

Violets on rugby cloud nine RASHIED ISAACS Violets are on cloud nine after their derby win against Surrey Estate Rangers on Saturday.

The 33-23 result was their first win of the season which moves them out of the bottom of the log after four games. Rangers who has a good winning record at their home ground were stunned after two minutes into the match when Taalieb Johnson, the pacy winger of Violets, jotted down for one of his three tries in the game. Rangers took up the challenge by giving the ball air from deep in their half leading to numerous scoring opportunities. One of these resulted in a try by flyhalf Tashreeq Bester who followed up his tactical kick to score in the corner.

Violets scored two more tries against the run of play to lead 17-16 at half-time.

The large crowd of supporters got much of the same dose of running rugby in the second half with Hishaam Samaai and Faeez Charles working their socks off for Rangers in broken play. They were equally matched by Fuad Fortune and Mee Kaa -Eel Hartley of Violets who stood out in defence and attack. The home team was left with a mountain to climb after three more tries for Violets by Junaid Karriem, Taalib

Johnsone and Omar Daniels, giving them a 33-16 lead in the 70th minute. Bester would add some respectability to the score with his second try of the match for Rangers before the final whistle. Rangers never gave up and their tough day on the field was largely due to unforced errors during the game. As for Violets, their determination made the victory sweet especially after the poor start to the season they endured.

“Violets were always going to be a danger coming into the game with their backs against the wall, but we simply made too many unforced errors which they capitalised on and were deserved winners,” says Ebrahim Moerat, coach of Rangers.

Hats off to both community clubs for the spirit in which the game was played and providing 80 minutes of pure entertainment for the loyal fans. Both clubs have a final fixture next weekend before the break for Ramadaan.

move into the qualifying positions in the WSL u.18 girls’ ranking which are currently held by Durban surfers Kayla Nogueira and Sophie Bell.

Three local surfers, Max Elkington from Kommetjie, Luke Slijpen from Llandudno and Eli Beukes from Kommetjie, are currently in the top positions for selection for the u.16 boys’ South African team. Summer Sutton from Kommetjie and Julia Plougmann from Scarborough are sitting just outside the qualifying positions for the u.16 girls’ team.

Other local surfers to watch out for are the Van Jaarsveldt brothers – Ford and York –

and Ethan Fletcher from Kommetjie who will be keen to post solid results.

The event organisers are hoping for the good conditions which helped make last year’s event such a success, but as the saying goes “a good surfer surfs in anything”, so the competitors will have been practising in all types of surf and be ready to perform in whatever Mother Nature offers.

The prize-giving will take place on Sunday afternoon and the organisers and competitors thank the local surf community for their cooperation and support.
