ew robotic technology will help doctors perform more accurate knee replacement surgeries resulting in better recovery for patients.

Following the first surgery at Victoria Hospital by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Paul Rowe, Dr Yusuf Hassan performed the second robotic knee replacement surgery at Mitchell’s Plain District Hospital last Tuesday.

Hassan says: “There are a few advantages [of using this technology]. It allows you to template the tibia and femur in operation and by templating you are recreating the patient’s own anatomy. Once you have templated you can then decide where you want

to place your implants.”

Another benefit of the technology is reduced risk and errors. This also results in a quicker rehabilitation and less blood loss during surgery. The robotic system only allows the surgeon to cut away the bone sections mapped out and will switch off when it has passed that section. This means a less invasive surgery with less soft tissue and healthy bone damaged.

Hassan performed a uni-knee replacement, which means only half of the knee joint was replaced. “This technology allows you as a surgeon, using the technology and patient’s own anatomy, to place the implants exactly where you want them. And then, not only does it allow you to put the implants where you feel necessary, but it also allows you to assess the soft tissue components.”

He and Rowe were both trained to perform the surgeries in France, where the technology was created. Hassan says it was also important for them to learn how to do the replacements manually in case the technology failed during the operation. “This is a steep learning curve and you have to start with the basics. I started last year doing these uniknee replacements and I know the system, so should the robot fail for whatever technical reason, I can still relate back to the conventional cutting method,” says Hassan.

Hassan has been a specialist in knee surgeries for the past two years.

Although robotic technology is seen and proven to be the future of orthopaedic surgery, feasibility research for future use of this machine is yet to be done by the provincial health department.

The new Smurfs movie, The lost village, is opening in cinemas on 31 March, and People’s Post readers can win tickets to see it that weekend.

local surfing instructor who works for an award-winning non-profit has helped an international internet tycoon get his feet wet.

The youngsters are currently participating in Waves for Change, a not-for-profit initiative which is using surfing to improve the wellbeing of township residents affected by violence and abuse.

They were joined for the surfing lesson last week by provincial economic opportunities minister Alan Winde.

Robben Island, Mauritius site partner Robben Island and Le Morne Cultural Landscape in Mauritius have signed a twinning agreement.

Arts and culture minister Nathi Mthethwa signed the agreement with Mauritius’s minister of sports and culture, Prithvirajsing Roopun, yesterday.

The agreement is intended to promote cultural and business ties. Robben Island and Le Morne Cultural Landscape share a common history of how people triumphed against adversity. Both have been declared world heritage sites. At Robben Island, banishment was due to segregationist laws and apartheid, while at Le Morne banishment resulted from exploitation of indentured slaves.

The partnership is expected to promote joint research, the exchange of best practice programmes, and shared exhibitions and website platforms.

A new installation, in honour of Tutu, is being mounted on the side of the Civic Centre in the Cape Town CBD. This artwork is next to the one of former president Nelson Mandela.

Tutu was conferred the freedom of the city in 1998.

Linsey Levendal, the artist who created the Madiba artwork, was commissioned to work on the Tutu piece which reflects his spirit and his life’s work. The design elements include stained glass referencing St George’s Cathedral, the smiling face of Leah Tutu referencing, the Rainbow Nation term coined by Desmond Tutu, a baobab tree referencing the work of his foundation, an Aids ribbon referencing his work in the fight against HIV and Aids as well as joined hands referencing ubuntu.

The artwork should be fully installed this week.

Cluster cracks down on crime D

uring the past week from Monday 13 to Friday 17 March, Mitchell’s Plain cluster police arrested 274 suspects for drug related crimes with 60 alleged drug houses searched.

Confiscations including a total of 56g of heroin, 630g of tik, 448g of mandrax, 4.2g of cocaine and 2391g of dagga. A total of 15 illegal shebeens were searched resulting in the confiscation of 303 416F of alcohol and five arrests on liquor related charges.

Five suspects will appear in court for the illegal possession of firearms with four illegal firearms as well as various rounds of ammunition confiscated during the same peri-

od. Seven suspects were arrested for crimes against women and children and 106 cases related were reported. Police also arrested 26 wanted suspects during 17 tracing operations. Officers also searched 39 second-hand shops and 614 spaza shops.

One roadblock resulted in six fines to the value of R6500 and 137 vehicle checkpoints were also held. Officers conducted 2740 stop and searches which led to eight arrests for dangerous weapons, 12 arrests for stolen property and two arrests for possession of house breaking tools.Police also recovered two stolen vehicles and 99 people were tested

by Morphotouch, yielding two arrests.

Robbers arrested after using fake gun Lentegeur Police have arrested a 20-year-old man for the possession of an imitation firearm.

On Saturday 11 March at 06:30, officers received a complaint of two men who were robbing people in Merrydale Avenue.

Officers proceeded to the scene stated in

the report and searched the men.

Officers found a black imitation firearm in the posession of the one suspect and arrested the man.

Body found, stabbed, in Melkbos Street Lentegeur police are investigating a case of murder following the discovery of a body in the area.

On Sunday 12 March at 06:15 police responded to a compliant of a body found in Melkbos Street, near the railway station in Lentegeur.

On arrival at the scene the body of a 39year-old man was found with multiple stab wounds to his body.

Police are investigating a case of murder.

Measles: get vaccination

n reaction to the measles outbreak in Stellenbosch last month, and in an effort to prevent any more people from contracting the illness, the Western Cape Department of Health is acting in line with World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Outbreak Response Protocol which advises mass vaccination to the affected areas and surrounds.

The campaign has now been extended to the Metro area.

The campaign which commenced on Monday 20 February has been extended to Friday 24 March to reach and vaccinate as many children aged between six months to five years.

Since the beginning of February until Friday 10 March, close to 5500 children aged between six months to five years were vaccinated by nurses from Mitchell’s Plain, Crossroads and Inzame Zabantu.

All available staff was deployed in these areas, visiting schools, crèches and even going door to door, irrespective of the heat.

These dedicated staff members rallied to ensure that vulnerable kids are vaccinated.

When an outbreak is confirmed, the first action is to vaccinate all those who are closest to the point of the outbreak, in this event; these were the learners attending the three high schools in Stellenbosch.

The second phase is to vaccinate those situated just outside of the initial outbreak, but who may be at risk of contracting the illness; these are children between six to 59 months who live in the Stellenbosch area.

The third measure is to vaccinate children attending primary schools, in the affected areas. The last measure to ensure effective coverage is to roll out vaccination to all children less than five years old within the Western Cape.

“To achieve the 80% coverage and protect our children, everyone needs to work together, parents need to take kids to their

A nurse completes a vaccination during the measles drive. clinic or health care provider, in addition to this, health teams will visit crèches and communities to ensure that as many children as possible are vaccinated,” says Monique Johnstone, spokesperson for the Western Cape Government Health.

“Parents and caregivers should note that campaigns such as this measles campaign

do not replace the routine vaccination and evaluations that your child needs to have.

Keep your child’s Road to Health Booklet handy and remember to take it with you when you visit the clinic; parents can also send the booklet along to the crèche, so that the health teams can note the measles booster shot in the booklet.”

Officials of the Western Cape department of social development say in a statement they strongly condemn the disruption of services, intimidation and unruly behaviour by Nehawu members who prevented service delivery at the Mitchell’s Plain local office last week.

On Thursday last week, about 50 Nehawu union members barged into the local office which also houses the Sassa offices.

Albert Fritz, provincial minister for social development, says in a statement: “The group allegedly proceeded to intimidate the majority of non-striking officials, who were going about their duties, and aggressively forced them out of the building.

“The group further proceeded to chase out residents who had come seeking help at the office. The illegal strikers then caused a hostage situation after they forcefully chained and locked remaining staff inside, and blockaded the entrances. This protest action was illegal, as the national department of social development had obtained a court interdict against Nehawu.”

The offices were then closed for the rest of the day.

Normal function has now resumed.

Fritz says the department will take disciplinary action against those involved.

Representatives from Jireh and Hollywood Bets.

Bets on for Beacon Valley Since inception in 1989 a local betting organisation has become a significant roleplayer in its community.

Hollywood Bets made their goals to help uplift the locals and to empower them a reality by running various programmes.

Currently Jireh in Beacon Valley offers an educare programme, a programme for young mothers called Scarlet and a programme aimed specifically at men called Fathers and Sons.

They also care for seniors in their community and provide aftercare for children.Families who are struggling and living in poverty can come to them for as-

sistance. Parents and children alike are given educational and recreational opportunities at the Jireh Centre. Their mission is to help improve parent/child relationships.

Team members from the Beacon Valley Hollywood Bets branch visited the centre to hand over a new double-door fridge.

Janice Erasmus, director at Jireh, thanked them for the assistance.

“The fridge will help us to store bigger quantities of food for our centre. It will help us to keep our vegetables fresh for longer and will allow us to plan meals better,” she says.

Jenna Croaster (12) is a member of the Jodie Jackson Dance School and part of a group heading to the Dance Star world finals in Europe next month. But lack of money could keep her away.

Her mother, Chantal, says Jenna started dancing about five years ago, doing modern and hip-hop classes.

“She just loved it from the start and works hard to train for competitions. With their latest achievements at the national championships they have the opportunity to go to the competition in Croatia but we have to raise our own funds to get her there.

“She is so excited and worked so hard that I don’t want to let her down. If there is a Good Samaritan out there with deep pockets: We need your help to make this dream

come true.”

Jenna, who is in Grade 7 at Sid G Rule Primary School, points out that while she loves dancing she values her education and loves participating in school activities.

“The discipline you need to dance well has helped me at school because I can concentrate better,” she says. “You must be able to concentrate in dance to remember all the moves when we train for competitions and want to be the best.”

This young dancer has her eye on dancing her way to the top in whatever she wants.

“Dancing has shown me how committed you must be if you want to be successful,” she says.

Speedo legs for cancer Local men will brave the streets in peak hour traffic to run cancer out of town at the Hollard Daredevil Run on Friday at 15:00.

The run aims to raise awareness of male cancers and the importance of early detection by encouraging men of all ages, shapes and sizes to run or walk along a 5km route in support of the cause.

These “daredevils” will run a designated route, starting at the Green Point Salesian Football Club and making their way through the city towards the finish line.

“The Hollard Daredevil Run proves that it’s easier to run in a Speedo than it is to fight cancer,” says Warwick Bloom, Hollard spokesperson.

“We call on all men, no matter how old or what shape they’re in, to take on the challenge in raising awareness for this important cause.”

While this fun run has had a positive impact on cancer awareness around the country, statistics show an alarming increase in the number of men with cancer in South

According to research of the National Cancer Registry, there has been a 32% increase in prostate cancer cases in the past year alone, with one in 19 men at risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime.

All proceeds from the run will go to the Cancer Association of South Africa to fund cancer awareness programmes as well as its Man Van initiative – a mobile health clinic which travels across the country providing free cancer testing to poor citizens.

Following the success of last year’s fun run, the Man Van reached and screened 8112 men throughout the country.

Men of all ages, shape and Speedo size can enter by visiting daredevilrun.nutickets.co.za to register. They can also nominate a friend, relative or colleague to join them in running cancer out of town.

Participants are invited to bring their families and fans to cheer them on from the sidelines on the day, as the run is restricted to Speedo-clad men and boys.

Sports skills to beat crime M

aking an Impact Through Sport (MITS) and Mitchell’s Plain and Lentegeur police held a graduation ceremony for candidates who successfully completed the Sport Coaching and Administration as well as a Golf Skills Programme.

The certificates awarded by ETA Colleage in conjunction with South Golf Development Board partnering with MITS. Mitchell’s Plain and Lentegeur police, through the Social Crime Units, are also part of this partnership as they work with the youth

and run various sporting codes at the schools such as the table tennis and pool league.

They also support the schools soccer, cricket and netball programmes as part of the Sports Against Crime and Youth At Risk Programmes.

The coaches attended a course at the ETA college. The schools that form part of the golf programme are Jamaica Way, Westville, Meadow Ridge, Eislenben, West End, Mitchell’s Plain and Ridgeville primary schools as well as Aloe Junior School.

“Van ons leerders is mense wat met gestremdhede lewe, maar nou het hulle ’n platform waarop hulle hul stem kan hoor.

“Hierdie platform verbeter die bemarkings-vaardighede van ons skool en maak ander skole bewus van ons vaardighede.”

Inga de Wee van die Laerskool Parkview het gesê baie leerders sukkel met lees en begrip, iets wat deur die gebruik van die digitale platform verbeter sal word.

Selwyn Page, ’n verteenwoordiger van Partners for Possibility, het gesê die OnsKan24-platform gee kinders die mag om hul stem te laat hoor en ’n verskil te maak in die samelewing.

Clarissa Philander van die Laerskool Bridgeville het gesê die werksessie help onderwysers om te verstaan hoe die sosiale platform anders is in die samestelling van stories en hoe die aanslag moet verander.

So byvoorbeeld is stories op ’n aanlynplatform bondiger as in ’n gedrukte koerant.

Leerders wat slimfone en tablette gebruik het hul eie taal, maar die werksessie het onderwysers bedag gemaak op die belangrikheid van taal, styl en leestekens.

Drie onderwysers van Bridgeville was by die werksessie. Een, ’n gr. 2-onderwyser wat talle leerders het wat reeds op die OnsKan24-platform skryf, sê: “As hulle nou reeds so goed skryf, hoe goed gaan hulle nie wees as hulle gr. 7 bereik nie, alles danksy OnsKan24 se ingryping.”

Kirstenhof Primary School came out tops in the province in the Jaguar Primary School Challenge that took place at the Cape Town Science Centre on Friday 3 March.

The Kirstenhof team, consisting of four Grade 7 learners, had to design and build a race car, enabling the learners to gain valuable real-life insight into engineering processes. Learners had to use diverse skills to complete their projects, including computer software design, model car construction, and marketing and branding strategies.

The school walked away with a computer powered by the Raspberry Pi board, the PiTopCEED Pro by RS Components SA. The device teaches learners how to code and introduces them to the world of electronics and computer hardware.

Western Province Preparatory School in Claremont was awarded second place.

Sweet Valley Primary School in Bergvliet came third.

These three schools will make up the province’s representation of the 14 teams competing in the national final, where they will search for the national champion.

Others schools that participated in the challenge include Pelican Park, Yellowwood, Rocklands, Porterville and Capricorn primary schools.

Porterville Primary School was awarded the prize for the fastest car.

Since the Jaguar Primary School Challenge began in South Africa in April last year, it has grown steadily.

“Today, Jaguar in South Africa and globally seeks to foster this spirit of innovation in young people through the Jaguar Primary School Challenge. This is a technology programme for all children and schools set to inspire the next generation of designers, engineers, and business leaders,” says Christopher Maxwell, programme manager.

The Jaguar Primary School Challenge is a global non-profit initiative aimed at primary school learners.

“The programme facilitates the emulation of the design and manufacturing of a race car, thereby enabling learners to gain valuable real-life insight into engineering processes. Learners work in groups of four and use diverse skills to complete their projects, including computer software design, model car construction, and marketing and branding strategies. Once the cars are built, they are raced on the F1 in Schools race track in thrilling race day events,” adds Maxwell.

The challenge currently runs in four provinces and has worked with a range of schools.

“In addition, the event has teamed up with valuable partners to pave a pathway between our schools and industry for learners.

The top three provincial winning teams of the Jaguar Primary School Challenge will receive invitations and financial support to attend the national final race day at Jaguar Centurion on Wednesday 29 March. The national final prize, a Jaguar racing experience, will be announced after the completion of the provincial finals,” he says.

The Jaguar Primary School Challenge is sponsored by Jaguar and is affiliated with Young Engineers and Scientists of Africa (YESA), Xperiland SA, Poynting Antennae, South Africa Advancement of Science and Technology Association (SAASTA/ NRF), the department of science and technology, Bloodhound Education Programme SA and Sangari SA. The Jaguar Primary School Challenge is facilitated by the Bloodhound Education Programme South Africa, the largest STEM intervention under the department of the science and technology.

Residents rally to find missing Rene I

t has been 11 days since Rene Tracy Roman from Steenberg went missing. But community members say they haven’t lost hope.

The 13-year-old stepped out for a few minutes on Friday 10 March and was not seen again. Roman has long black hair and green eyes and is slender and tall. She was last seen wearing black tights, a pink top with no sleeves and slip-on sandals.

Since her disappearance residents and members of different community policing forums (CPF) and neighbourhood watches have been busy searching for her.

Lucinda Evans, Steenberg CPF chairperson, says they are holding on to hope.

“We are hoping that we will bring the child home safely. We are still looking and we are not going to give up now. The community has been very helpful. It’s just a difficult time for the family and we urge people to be very sensitive when they are giving any information to them,” she says.

A R20 000 reward has been put up for information that leads to finding her.

“We will reward anyone who comes with the right information of where to find Rene.

We are also asking the community not to give false information. People have been saying she was seen here and seen there, which is very traumatic to the parents because they go there and there is nothing.

This has been such a traumatic time for them. If you call them with information, make sure you have the right information,” says Evans.

Evans says she is grateful to the residents and members of CPFs and neighbourhood watches who helped in the search.

“I would like to thank all the people who rallied behind us as we were searching.

Free health check for teens The Zimele Project will be hosting a free Youth Education Becoming Opportunity (YEBO) Health and Wellness Jamboree at Rocklands High School for school girls aged 15 to 19 years from 09:00 to 14:00.

The Jamboree will include free health screening, check-ups, and healthcare service information desks from various NGO’s and organizations. Health checks will include blood pressure, HIV testing, TB screening, eye and dental checks, nutritional guidance and CPR demonstrations.

Sasha Lee Davids, singer and South African Idols 2015 co-winner, and DJ Randy will be at the event that will also feature lots of

prizes up for grabs.

The Zimele Project is an initiative of the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in partnership with the Western Cape Government and funded by the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Zimele is a unique multi-dimensional health and social intervention programme for youth aged ten to 24 in the Mitchell’s Plan and Klipfontein sub-structure.

Zimele organises multiple interventions that provide comprehensive health services to adolescents, lends educational support, and empowers youth of all ages to build bright and better futures.

Arts can play a meaningful role for children but very few of them get to do it often as there is not much official support for it.

To turn things around, Curshwon Music is hosting a learner talent competition to help children get glued to the arts. They are working with nine schools in Steenberg, Grassy Park, Cafda, Lavender Hill, Westlake and Retreat.

“The arts, which can be in the form of song, dance, music and poetry, can play a meaningful role towards transformation, yet it is one of the genres that receive minimal attention at schools,” says Curshwon Linnett.

“We are doing the talent show to bring the arts closer to the learners. With the prevalence of bullying, behavioural issues and social problems, change can occur by providing a platform for learners to expose themselves artistically.”

Curshwon Music is hosting “My school’s got talent 2017” over two weeks this month.

“The participation has been phenomenal.

Children are enjoying this a lot and you can

see it is something most have been deprived of. We have done many auditions and we will be rounding up now,” he says.

Curshwon Music started as a band of four members in 2011.

Currently it has about 25 members consisting of musicians, singers and dancers.

“We recognise that there is much talent in our society, yet there is an overall lack of engagement and no vehicle for aspiring artists.

This includes parents, teachers, arts institutions, promoters. Our goal is to develop and expand talent in learners and create platforms where these talents can be exposed to wider audiences,” Linnett says.

During the talent competition learners will be taught voice control, diction, microphone technique and using stage areas.

“This will culminate in a public performance toward the end of the first term. Although it is a competition we encourage broad participation rather than competing.

This competition should not seen as a religious event, but is open to all genres of performing arts,” he says V The semi­finals with take place from Thursday 13 to Wednesday 26 April. The finale will take place on Wednesday 3 May.

The Bridgetown Theatre Company and Brigdetown High School are teaming up to compete in the annual high school band slam competition at the Waterfront amphitheatre.

Bridgetown Theatre Company learners gear up for band slam The Bridgetown Theatre Company’s (BTC) participation in the high school band slam competition at the Waterfront amphitheatre is a direct result of its seven-year working relationship with Bridgetown High School.

Some of the high school members of the BTC are from Bridgetown. BTC’s premises are also part of the school’s property and BTC teachers provide free classes in dance, drama and music to the learners.

Over the years this collaboration has culminated in opportunities for Bridgetown learners to perform in the Artscape Drama Festival, at the Cape Town Carnival and in the Grandwest Arena high school jam.

The main aim of the band slam competition is to give a platform to high school learners to showcase their musical talent.

This is the second year BTC and the high school will be participating in the event, now in its fifth year.

“We are extremely proud of the success our learners have achieved in a very short time,”

says Bridgetown principal Andrew Windvogel.

“Our learners, unlike those of other former model C schools who are also participating in this event, do not have the music facilities at our school or music teachers. Despite this glaring disadvantage our learners raised themselves above their dire circumstances to produce music that we are proud of.

“They sacrificed their time to attend rehearsal.”

He adds that for them it is not about winning but participation while creating awareness among learners of their self-worth.

“Ultimately, by us giving our learners the opportunity, it will teach them that the same discipline, commitment and dedication that they apply to their love for music they will apply to their schoolwork and their lives,” he says.

Jeremy Syster is part of Soulfest Concerts who are hosting a warm-up event at the Portlands Indoor Sports Centre on Friday that features his son Lyle with his band and vocalist Candice Thornton.

“We are hosting an Old School Jazz Party that also features DJs like Uncle Cal, Dougie and DJ Cool J for an evening of great entertainment for young and old,” he says.

“One of the main reasons for starting this project that will end with the highlight in Westridge Gardens on 24 September is that we want to showcase up and coming talents in music as well as hip hop dancers, graffiti artists and all creative youth in the area.

“While entertainment is the main aim we also want to show people that there are young people in the area who aspire to rise above some of the negative influences that surround them” Syster adds that one of the main reasons that he is starting this initiative is experiencing how young people react when they hear Lyle playing.

Collecting Cape culture With human rights in focus this week some of Cape Town’s most respected artists will perform at the Slave Church in Long Street on Friday for the Cape Cultural Collective’s (CCC) programme, “Our rights, Our future”.

Former Moodphase Five singer Ernestine Deane will be accompanied by guitarist Elton Goslett, while the Rosa Choir will take to the stage with its multilingual offerings. Flamenco guitar legend Bienyameen Camroodien will be accompanied by his 16-year-old son Dawood.

Songwriter, guitarist and singer Byron Clarke is also performing.

Poems will be delivered by Kyle Louw and newcomer to the CCC stage Philomene Luyindula.

The Terreiro Capoeira group will present some of their energetic dance movements.

Poet Khadija Tracey Heeger will do a tribute to ten human rights icons of the last century through words and sounds.

This will be accompanied by multimedia visuals and text.

Starting at 19:00 this event is organised in collaboration with the Cape Town Festival and the Slave Church Museum.

Andrey Baranov, the winner of the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition in 2012, returns to the Cape Town Concert Series platform, accompanied by his sister, Maria Baranova, on piano.

The recital takes place on Saturday 25 March at 20:00 at the Baxter Concert Hall.

They will play a wide-ranging programme from Tartini to Tchaikovsky, Chausson to Paganini and Ysaye. Baranov will also play Ravel Tzigane.

Baranov is also a winner of Benjamin Britten and Henri Marteau International Violin competitions, and has taken top prizes in more than twenty other international

competitions including Indianapolis, Seoul, Sendai, Liana Isakadze, David Oistrakh and Paganini (Moscow). He is currently First Violinist of the David Oistrakh Quartet, an outstanding ensemble established in 2012 and since making his major debut in St Petersburg with the Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005, he has established himself on many of the world’s foremost stages.

With his sister, a prize-winning pianist and soloist well known particularly in their native Russia and Europe, he has been performing as a duo since she was nine in 1995.

Together they won several prizes as a duo.

Currents drag life to and fro

South Africa is world-renowned for having one of the most diverse climates on the planet.

It is affected by two different currents, the Agulhas and the Benguela currents, and three different oceans, the Atlantic, the Indian and the Southern oceans.

These currents affect the weather patterns and play a major role in the Earth’s climatic system.

The currents not only transport heat, but carbon dioxide as well.

Heat and carbon dioxide are major sources of global warming.

The warmer of the two ocean currents found around South Africa is the Agulhas Current.

In the scientific world, the Agulhas Current is one of the most interesting currents in the world, with scientists all across the world looking to research it.

The Agulhas Current brings warmer waters from further north, which has an impact on the weather patterns in and around South Africa.

The Agulhas Current has a drastic impact on the global ocean circulation as it impacts the transport of warmer water to the northern Atlantic.

It is thought that if this transport of warmer water were to stop or slow down, the climate of Europe may be impacted and it could potentially result in an ice age.

The colder Benguela brings nutrient-rich waters to the west coast of South Africa.

This nutrient-rich water promotes the support of a high abundance of marine life.

This high abundance supports the local fishing industries along the west coast of South Africa.

The two ocean currents around South Africa are extremely important and they both have an impact on local and global weather patterns. It is, therefore, another thing for us South Africans to be proud of and to appreciate.

The scoop on Merlin the dog I volunteer at Tears, but am writing in my personal capacity.

[Nicole McCain’s] article about Merlin was wonderful (“Pet a dog”, 7 March).

In fact, he was probably the father of the three pups she mentioned. I looked after them, plus the mother, before they went back to Tears for adoption as they had the highly contagious mange.

Tears’ “puppy mum” Ros Raubenheimer then took over their care and made sure each pup went to a loving home.

The one I called Pikkie (as he was so small and ill) is now a strapping 18+kg beauty. His guardian Kai had his 10th birthday a couple of weeks back and instead of presents he raised food and monetary donations for Tears. We had a gathering for him at the kennels on Sunday 26 February, the day after Kai’s birthday.

I will just add that I’m not so happy with Merlin at the moment. One of the kennel hands was bringing him back from a walk when Merlin saw me in my car pulling off and tried to dive through the window. I won’t mention the scratches on the paintwork.

Water waste list is racist The City of Cape Town’s publication of the top 100 water consumers (or wasters) seems rather biased and racist. Once again the so-called coloured or disadvantaged communities, who so proudly voted for this DA municipality, are being made the scapegoats for the mismanagement of our water resources.

It is difficult to believe that people living in Crawford, Manenberg and Lansdowne can consume more water than those living in the upmarket suburbs of Bishop’s Court, Constantia, Camps Bay, etc.

Knowing that almost every household property in these upmarket suburbs has a pool, was the thousands of litres of water that each pool takes added to the daily consumption that they use for household purposes?

Who is the DA-controlled City protecting at the expense of the poor? Besides the water wasted in massive pools, it is common knowledge that the rich also buy and consume bottled water, which will not reflect on their monthly bills.

Management of our water resources starts at the point when properties are planned for development. Before plans are approved, the total consumption and wastage of water must be analysed and

steps taken to prevent wastage of our water resources, not at the time when we’re about to run dry.

There are consumers with high water usage in all suburbs. There are also various reasons for unacceptably high use – sometimes due to leaks on private property, contraventions of the water restrictions or a general disregard for the impact of high and uncontrolled usage on all of us.

The top 100 highest water users were drawn from a system which shows the stepped tariff on the billing system.

We have been investigating the causes for the high consumption across suburbs.

Some properties have been identified as having private leaks. Each customer has a legal responsibility to ensure that their plumbing does not leak – even the plumbing and pipes underneath a house.Where a user is indigent or in financial difficulties, the City is assessing their situation according to our tariff and debt management policies.

s dam levels continue to drop and residents across the city fret over the current water crisis, two local companies have teamed up to literally create water out of thin air.

Local businessmen David Fulton of Red Konnect Business Systems and Greg Bredenkamp of Aquacello have been making waves in recent weeks as they go around proudly demonstrating how their Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) produces clean drinking water and even cleaner air. Last week the two men, whose businesses are situated in Bellville and Plattekloof, invited People’s Post to a demonstration of how the AWG works and say while the technology is complex, the concept is pretty simple.

The machine resembles a normal office water dispenser, yet comes in various models, sizes and designs for homes and offices. Fulton explains: “In essence it takes in warm air through the side and cools it down to dew point. Condensation then starts to kick in and it drips into the bottom tank and what happens is, once it’s in there, it goes through a filtration process. It starts removing bacteria, e.coli and heavy metals, and then goes through what is known as reverse osmosis. In this process it also strips out the nutrients and minerals in the water so it is in a distilled state. It then goes into a mineralisation filter, which puts minerals back into the water.”

The technology, they say, was first created almost 15 years ago by the American military for use by soldiers out in the field. “It was first developed in the USA for the military and since then the patent has fallen away.”

So, along with a manufacturer in China, the duo has created AWGs for homes, offices, businesses and even farms. They say while the machine needs electricity to operate, certain models allow for users to place solar panels on the AWG. Fulton says amid ongoing droughts and water restrictions, domestic households with an AWG can help relieve some pressure on the municipal water supply. He

says while many rely on rain to solve the dry dam situation, the average rainfall in recent years has proven that this is not a sustainable solution. Instead, he says, South Africans need to be proactive about water generation.

“Most municipal infrastructures in Africa can no longer keep up with the settlement of new families taking up residency in territories every month, along with increased tourism and cross-border migration into major cities. Dams will always be under pressure to cope with the growth, not to mention the pressure this puts on the municipal infrastructure. The Western Cape has an average of 60% relative humidity all year round (taking winter rainy months into consideration as well), making the AWG solution perfect for coastal regions. However, the AWG can also be used inland where areas have a lower relative humidity and still produce water at 60% to 80% capacity in the standard configuration. To this end, the machine can be reconfigured for territories to operate at 100% in regions with lower relative humidity.”

Bredenkamp says while the AWG could assist residents to go completely “off the

water grid”, there are various options for homeowners. He explains that depending on the size of the AWG purchased, a homeowner could opt to either completely cut off the municipal water supply or have a switch-over between the two water supplies. Fulton says the machines, which cost around R20 000 for the smallest AWG, have already caught the attention of several banks that are willing to finance the product. Along with this, he says, banks have requested a maintenance cost. Bredenkamp says all AWGs come with a service plan enabling consumers to have their water generator checked once a year and the necessary parts replaced. Asked whether he thought he was sitting on a gold mine, Bredenkamp says: “I have been working for just over a year to complete the AWG so it can be sold commercially.

This is not about money. This is about a precious resource that we are quickly running out of. What will my children and yours be drinking in the next 10 years?

The problems with water supply are very real, and I believe we have this technology and so we should all be working to make this available to residents.”

Bertus Mostert threw well for his team (7 inn, 7 hits, 1 walk and 5 strike outs).

Giants trump Yankees In another 10-innings game, Westridge Yankees were beaten 3-1

by Maitland Giants.

Three hits by the Giants in the top of the tenth inning secured them the victory.

The Giants used three pitchers who combined to allow Yankees four scattered hits. Ryan Samie (2/4) was the best hitter for the Giants.

Crusaders save best for last Crusaders beat VOB 8-3 in their last league game of the season.

Crusaders started with Sergio Thompson on the mound. He conceded two runs in six innings. Jarrod Williams replaced him and

conceded a run in three innings.

Two former Crusaders players, Michael Scritten and Grant Robertson, shared the pitching duties for VOB. Altino Elliott (2/4) did well for VOB and Brent Robertson (2/5) and Chris Jacobs did well for Crusaders. VOB made a total of 10 errors.

In other action over the weekend, Athlone beat Durbanville 11-7 in Durbanville.

Double dare at Killarney in extreme festival ADRIAN PHEIFFER With the cars in the national Extreme Festival and the South African championship DEOD Super GP motorcycles on the same programme for the first time in three years, Killarney is preparing for a doublebarrelled blast on Saturday.

On the festival programme is the return of the turbocharged Sasol Global Touring Cars (GTCs). And with a large field that is said to be faster than they were during their debut meeting in the Cape last year, some exciting racing can be expected.

Locals will undoubtedly favour local hotshot Johan Fourie in his EPS Courier BMW-2, as he challenges reigning GTC champion Michael Stephen (Engen Xtreme Audi A3).

They could be beaten by the likes of Gennaro Bonafede, who came second in last year’s title chase in his Sasol BMW, and Production kingpin Daniel Rowe, who is moving up to the senior class in a VW Jetta.

The GTCs are going to be relaunching the production class as GTC-2 for this year’s season. Here the battle will probably be between Killarney’s Dayne Angel in a lone Honda Civic, and a selection of Volkswagen GTis and powerful 2F Minis.

Although the Crossley & Webb Sports

and GT events do not enjoy national status, their standard of racing justifies it. The biggest question is whether Craig Jarvis can keep his 8.4F V10 Dodge Viper ahead of three Lotus Exiges in the hands of Dawie Joubert, Philip Booysen and Ian Long.

Jarvis secured a well-deserved overall victory during the opening Power series meeting. On other occasions Joubert has been first to the flag. Saturday could go either way.

Other interesting Sports and GT entries include the one from Johan Engelbrecht, whose GT2R may be the fastest Porsche in the country.

Then Scois Joubert can be seen in an almost bodyless Ariel Atom, while Steve Humble has the advantage of superior driving ability to compensate for his Juno S2000’s moderate power output.

Women are represented by Paige Lindenberg in the single-seater Investchem Formula 1600 class and VW Polo driver Tasmin Pepper, who is definitely going to be a threat in the Engen VW cup category.

Among the young competitors, 15-yearold Giordano Lupini is maturing quickly in the Engen VW cup, while Joshua Dolinschek could spring a surprise in his Mygale Duratech in the Investchem Formula 1600 category.

The national Global Touring Cars competition is expected to provide some of the best racing performances at Killarney on Saturday.

“By the sea” moves to Parow JOE PILLAY

ne of the most popular events on the youth soccer calendar, the Strandfontein AFC u.13 “By the sea” tournament, promises to be an exciting showdown when the host club rolls out its 18th annual showpiece.

The competition on Saturday and Sunday had to be relocated to Ikamva sports complex, home of Ajax Cape Town, in Parow due to the poor condition of the Strandfontein fields.

Natasha Cyster, the Seagulls’ tournament director, says it was a difficult decision to move the tournament.

“With much thought and consideration, our tournament committee met last week and after having thought deeply about our challenge and due to the poor state the Strandfontein sports fields find itself in because of lack of resources and water restrictions, we cannot stage our event on our community homeground.

“My apologies to the Strandfontein and nearby communities of Mitchell’s Plain. The concern for the venue has really been sleepless nights for me as it’s a community club that has been formed by families over the years. I for one don’t want to lose what we have, which is the support of our community, parents, players and the greater Mitchell’s Plain [community],” she says.

This popular u.13 competition has been able to attract clubs from far and wide to showcase and develop players. The tournament also aims to create a carnival atmosphere to entice clubs and spectators alike.

“Our club has frequently requested help from Safa Cape Town, our local Mitchell’s Plain LFA and from the City of Cape Town, but nothing concrete was forthcoming and we had to relocate to Ikamva sports complex,” Cyster adds.

Mutual Academy, Ulana Academy and defending champion Stellenbosch University (Maties) will again be on the forefront, along with the Strandfontein Seagulls, who won the Plate section and went on to win Safa Cape Town’s Build-it Reach for a Dream tournament.

Wayne Carstens, Mitchell’s Plain LFA president, says that with communities plagued by gangsterism, drugs and violent crime, sporting activity and morale were low.

“Therefore we need to ensure our youngsters are kept active and off the streets,” he says.

“Apart from seeing this tournament giving impetus to several rising stars, the proud history is driving the competing teams to display their soccer abilities and compete for the coveted title but also the opportunity to create a healthier and happier future for themselves and their community.”

Matches will start on Saturday at 10:00 and on Sunday at 09:30.

Square Hill United scores 50 years JOE PILLAY A great milestone will be celebrated with a host of events for the 50th anniversary of the Square Hill United Football Club.

The amateur club, based in Grassy Park and Retreat, was established as a social club in 1967.

Community leaders and sports enthusiasts identified the need to uplift and celebrate the residents in and around the historic precinct of Square Hill.

Since those early beginnings, which featured pioneers like Graham Lawrence donning the club’s signature navy blue uniform, Square Hill FC has developed into an institution that now serves a dedicated community of players from Steenberg,

According to one of the club’s executive committee members, Terence Hermanus, who is also president of the South Peninsula Local Football Association (LFA) and holds a position on Safa Cape Town’s regional committee, the Square Hill club has grown in stature and is currently a full member of the South Peninsula LFA. The club is represented in the South Peninsula LFA in the following age groups: u.8, u.10, u.12, u.14, u.16, u.18 and u.35 in the first, second and premier divisions.

“Despite the fact that many of our players, particularly the juniors, live in areas hit by severe unemployment and social ills, such as gangsterism and drugs, the

club has remained steadfast as a strong moral compass, serving the community through excellence in sport.

“We have – against all odds – managed to guide the young people towards a life of perseverance and achievement.

“It is these qualities, nurtured over 50 years of its existence, that have earned the Square Hill United Football Club the respect of the community from which it hails and that it serves with distinction on and off the field,” says Hermanus.

Festivities Celebrations for the club’s anniversary will start at the Rooikrans sports complex on Saturday, with a family day Easter extravaganza from 10:00 for the children’s ac-

tivities. Entry fee for children is R10, with a potjiekos competition, starting at noon, costing R50 to enter.

The next event will take place next Saturday when a karaoke evening will be hosted at the Grassy Park Hotel at a cost of R30 per person.

Rooikrans sports complex will once again host festivities when the u.16 pre-season tournament kicks off on Saturday 8 April, concluding the following day.

The club has a desperate need for companies or individuals to sponsor or donate for these or future events.

Thousands at darts contest

mass darts competition hosted at GrandWest this past weekend, saw the winner walking away with a ticket to the world cup.

Professional darts player Devon Petersen from Mitchell’s Plain hosted the knockout competition which featured 180 players from around the country.

A total of 3000 people attended the event over the weekend.

The players were a mix of SA’s best professional and amateur enthusiasts who came together to battle it out from Friday to Sunday.

The winner was Deon Oliver, originally from Mitchell’s Plain.

He travelled from Port Elizabeth, where he now lives, to compete alongside the other hopefuls.

Oliver walked off with prizes worth R80 000. He now joins the SA team for the dart world cup in June.
