A

community have come to stand together to mourn the loss of a fellow resident. On Sunday 25 September, the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum, Strandfontein Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), San Remo Block Watch and ward councillor Elton Jansen came together with neighbours, family and friends in memory of Grant Fredericks. Fredericks (39) was shot and killed in a hijacking in Milano Street, just a stone’s throw from his Genoa Way home. On Tuesday 20 September at 21:00, Strandfontein police attended a complaint of a shooting, police confirm. The victim was at the tuck-shop when three men approached him, says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams. Fredericks was asked for his keys and handed them over but was still shot in the back.

“They then took his red Volkswagen Polo and drove off down Spine Road in the direction of Mitchell’s Plain,” says Williams. Fredericks was declared dead at the scene. A case of murder and hijacking was opened for investigation by the provincial task team. This tragic incident took a twist the next day when the hijacked car was used in an attempted robbery at Cavendish Square in Claremont. Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed an incident where five men entered a jewellery story in the centre. “They held up the staff at gunpoint and smashed display cabinets but fled emptyhanded when an alarm sounded,” he says. “Mall security was able to grab one of the suspects while police arrested the other four and seized an illegal firearm.” Further investigation also found them in possession of the stolen VW Polo which was traced to the incident in Strandfontein. The men, aged between 23 and 32, have been charged with murder, attempted

An emotional few moments were spent at the park in Genoa Way as neighbours came out in their numbers to support the family. “It is heartwarming to see the community come together to pay their respects to the family after what happened,” says Levan Ja-

cobs, Strandfontein NHW spokesperson. “This was senseless and after the fact the family is still left with the trauma and pain.” Jansen says the family will need the continued support from the community and urged residents to continue to stand together and look out for one another. “Today is a sad day and in fact it has been a sad week for the family and we feel that pain as a community,” says Jansen. He says residents should also stand together against crime. “Crime is not tolerated in our community. We need to take back our streets and show criminals we are not scared to claim back our spaces. When we do that we send a strong message,” he says. Residents lit candles and took the opportunity to offer prayers for the family and show their support in their time of bereavement. A family representative also offered thanks to all the volunteers who worked at the scene and said they understood it was “his time, and in God’s hands”. Fredericks is survived by his wife and two children.
