TAFELSIG
Fury at suspect's release
SAMANTHA LEE @Samantha_Lee121

iolent protests have erupted following the release of a Tafelsig man connected to the murder of a 61-year-old woman. Tafelsig residents took to the streets on Wednesday 4 March in a three-hour long demonstration. Police spokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt confirms that protests started at 18:30 outside the woman’s Winterhoek Street home and moved to AZ Berman Drive between Spine Road and Langeberg Avenue. “Police vehicles were stoned as they arrived at the scene. We understand residents’ frustration but it stems from a lack of education on how the court processes work,” says Voegt. It is understood that residents were on a manhunt for a 21-year-old man who had been released following the case against him being provisionally withdrawn pending further investigation. The man was arrested on Monday 2 March after the discovery of the woman’s body in a council-issue refuse bin. About 08:15 that day police were called to the scene, confirms Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Constable Zandile Marashula. “An officer arrived at the home and found the woman’s body inside a dirt bin,” she says. People’s Post understands the bin had been put out for refuse collection on Monday. A council worker opened the bin at the truck and discovered the woman’s bloodied body inside. The circumstances surrounding her death were still unclear at the time of going to print. However police have confirmed a murder case is being investigated. It is understood the woman was beaten to death with a hammer. The suspect had been taken in for questioning and was later arrested in connection with the murder. He appeared in court on 4 March and was released. Voegt says the case was under investiga-

In this case we are waiting on the forensic results. If the suspect is linked to the case following the results he will be back in court. The case has not been thrown out. It has been provisionally removed until the preliminary investigation is complete,” Voegt says. Protestors started burning tyres and throwing stones at police vehicles when they learnt of the release. Cases of public violence and malicious damage to property have been opened at the Mitchell’s Plain Police Station for investigation following the protest.

Voegt says no arrests have been made and no injuries were reported. Reports of the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd could not be confirmed. Instead, Voegt said: “When managing public violence we will use minimum force possible to control the situation.” Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs was at the scene of the protests. He confirmed the burning tyres and stone-throwing. “We condemn these violent acts in the strongest terms,” he says. The investigation is ongoing and the woman has since been buried in accordance with Muslim rites. The investigation also includes an in-

depth look into the woman’s report history. Police are looking into the possibility of a history of domestic violence and other violent crimes which may have occurred in the household. Voegt says although it may not be the case in this incident, he urges residents to come forward and not to withdraw cases when they get to court. “Domestic violence is very difficult to police because it happens in the household. However, if it is reported we can hold them [perpetrators] accountable,” he says. V Anyone with information on the murder case is urged to phone the investigating officer Sergeant Spensor Fillis on 082 777 8076 or the Mitchell’s Plain cluster operations room on 021 370 1706.
